another thing i'll always love abt kotlc is the way that there isnt a redemption arc for the abusers. i feel like there's too many pieces of media where the abuser is forgiven because you find out that they had good intentions or that they actually loved their victim-- but in kotlc, those aren't excuses.
you find out that linh and tam's mother misses them and regrets what she did, to the point where she becomes more forgiving and lenient; painting awkward portraits of her children because she's beginning to forget what they look like. but despite the pity, none of it is framed in a way that tries to excuse her and her husband's actions. tam and linh will always be the ones who decide whether or not to forgive them, but the narrative doesn't push the idea that they should.
it's revealed that cassius does love his son deeply, and every time he laughs and joke, a tiny part of him is happy when he sees his son smile. but instead of formulating sophie to feel bad for him, she's furious at the idea that him loving keefe will ever make up for the years of neglect his son had to go through.
it's told time and time again that gisela believes that what she's doing will be good for the world-- and therefore good for keefe. but the story doesn't even entertain the notion of understanding gisela for what she did to her child because nothing would ever justify the lies and manipulation.
i wouldnt say mr forkle is an abuser-- but i will always love how sophie never forgives him or trusts him fully. it's not even considered. yes, he did all those things for a good reason; messing with sophie's memories, making her feel alienated, giving her limbium-- but shannon never writes kotlc in a way that makes sophie feel like she should forgive forkle

ok, no one talks about the whole Sencen crest thing enough. Remember when he got the crest and he was so excited to show it to Sophie, he was so proud. And then that was all fake. His mom was using it to track him and his friends. He actually felt appreciated by his dad, and it was all a lie. I don't think I would ever recover from that.

What’s so frustrating is that all of the secondary villains have all of these complex motivations connected to their experiences with the unjust aspects of the elf world.
And then there’s our main villain Lady Gisela, who we don’t even know what she wants or what her motivation is.

Lady Gisela, manifesting as a conjurer at like, twelve or thirteen: I guess I’ll pretend I don’t have this ability in case that’s ever becomes helpful for my possible future nefarious plans
I think we forget that most Elvin adults we know are HUNDREDS of years old?? Like. Why did Child Gisela do this??

Tam and Linh's relationship is so beautiful. They had only each other since the very beginning, till they met with the Black Swan and even then, their bond is so much stronger than theirs with anyone else. Linh was the only one who was banished but Tam didn't want to live in a world without her by his side and joined her. Tam was said to be very protective of Linh during Exilium, never leaving her side. He only trusted Sophie when she risked herself for helping Linh. Tam was not ready to commit to the Black Swan but the moment Linh volunteered, Tam followed. Tam only joined the Neverseen when Gisela threatened Linh's safety. And when Linh heard the news, she didn't break down but fiercely believed that Tam can survive, that he'll make it out. And yet, the moment Sophie raised the possibility of Linh being able to telepathically communicate with Tam and hear his voice, Linh's eyes welled up with tears, full of hope. After being able to hear Linh telepathically, Tam cried in his room. He only talked with Rayni, because for a split second, when she asked him if he was doing okay, she sounded like Linh. They bicker and fight like any other pair of siblings but their love runs so deep. They're each other's first priority, always and forever more.

the dynamic between the sencens is so endlessly fascinating to me — especially with the idea that they do love each other. like they are three people who are forever tied together even though they cannot stand each other and underneath that they care about each other so much they despise it. lord cassius is the cruelest and most callous man in the lost cities and when you look into his subconscious it’s filled with love for gisela and keefe. keefe hates his parents and still grieved when he thought gisela died. gisela did nothing but use her son and husband relentlessly for her own gain and still was upset when they discovered her identity bc it meant losing the pretense of family. your family are the worst people you know but also the ones you can’t let go of.

Vespera: We need a strategy. Of course, we could exploit their weaknesses...we need brutality. Show our willingness to violence, let them know we are a threat. A force to be reckoned with.
Gisela: My son will soon fulfill his legacy. We as an order shall make it our priority that he undergoes the necessary changes. You're correct Vespera, we need brutality and a situation desperate enough he will be forced to acknowledge his violence-prone instincts...
Fintan next to them:
