It’s theories why men don’t write fic, and it’s got such a libfem take at the end, essentially saying: “Fic is written by marginalized groups in order to see themselves in canon, so cishet white males don’t need to write fic because canon already caters to them”

The observation is correct (female fandom is more creative than male fandom) but they come up with the wrong explanation bc it’s only “cishet white males” they’re willing to dunk on.

Gay men and MoC aren’t represented in most mainstream media either, but they aren’t the ones writing 300k fics to resolve this. So the differences between male and female fandom can’t be explained by the need to “see oneself in canon”. Creative fandom and fic especially is a majority-female hobby. But female writers aren’t trying to “see themselves in canon” either bc all they ever write about is fictional men. I’d say that women ACTUALLY write out of intense and often romantic passion for the (usually male) characters, which compels women to generate endless fanworks to satisfy their romantic ideals and numb the pain of their dull realities. Men also have dull realities, yet the fandom divide is purely male/female and the reason is money vs passion.

Women’s passion for fictional escape is so great that they’ll write a 300k fic saga for free if they have to. Do you honestly think any man capable of producing 300k words of creative writing would share it FOR FREE? No, he would try to publish it as an original novel to make money off his labor. Men aren’t socially conditioned to perform free labor like women. Women are conditioned to generate free resources for others while men hoard resources, only giving them away if something of equal or greater value is promised in return. That’s why YouTube (monetization) is male-dominated and they will never touch Ao3, because it’s illegal to make money off fic. It’s the one female-only space men aren’t interested in.

Men live by the motto “If you’re good at something never do it for free.” Whatever passion and creativity men possess comes second to their need for material reward. Women dominate fandom bc we value love and connection more than squeezing money out of every opportunity.

i don't even have anything to add to this bc i think you hit the nail on the head, it's not about "seeing yourself" in the work at all it's about intense passion for the work and the characters and the relationships, and male characters get much more love than female characters do! it's literally the urge to get out your beloved toys and put them in elaborate situations

2024 Fandom in Review

I have never before had any REASON to do this, but this year was... wow. Just. Get this.

My TOTAL word count since 2006 on AO3 is: 140,392

2024's word count was: 113,325

So until this year, in NEARLY TWENTY YEARS OF FANDOM, I had only posted 27,067 words in 17 stories. And until this year, the last time I posted a fic was in 2020. I posted TEN stories this year. SINCE JUNE, FRIENDS.

I have posted ten stories and 113,325 words in the last six months. I do not even recognize myself.

I should say that I don't recognize US, because @nutterzoi, my beloved bestie and amazing co-writer, wrote FIVE of these with me, for 102,203 of those words.

Your proudest accomplishment: Everything I Never Knew I Always Wanted, because it was written for the Inception Big Bang, and we actually finished it. It was one of the first fic ideas that came to me when I discovered the fandom and Zoe and I took it and shaped it into something really full and have an entire AU for it. It came out beautifully, and we finished it on time, and it's the longest fic we've ever managed to finish and post. So I'm very proud of this one.

List of fics completed this year (in order they were finished), including the first line of each fic:

Safe as Houses: By the time they reach the safe house just outside Oslo, Eames is well past exhausted, and he’s not sure how Arthur is even still upright.

Antebellum: He’s not watching Arthur sleep.

Homecoming: Arthur hates Gotham City.

Debriefing: It takes too long for Eames to find a chance to escape Fischer.

Everything I Never Knew I Always Wanted: Arthur is in Belarus when he gets the call about Dom. (@nutterzoi actually wrote this line. The first line I wrote in it was this monstrosity: Eames is undercover, underground and entirely off the grid when it all happens, because he was foolish enough to take a job with an extractor who was having an affair with the daughter of a fucking Columbian cartel drug lord while married to a woman with ties to the bloody Russian mafia.)

The Missing Piece: “What’s wrong with him?”

A Tremendous Thing: As a general rule, Arthur tries to keep his information brokering to certain set hours.

Proximity and Chance: Eames stumbles and the only reason he doesn’t land on the forest floor is that he falls into a tree trunk.

There's More of Gravy than of Grave about You: Eames looks up at the knock at his door, smiling and gesturing for Mal to come in when he sees her there.

Ice and Mirrors: It’s so cold that the air is sucked out of Arthur’s lungs.

....You know, I tend to think of myself as being very wordy and too prone to run-on sentences, but these are all quite short. Who knew!

Getting to the end is not what's important.

I am absolutely astounded by SANABI by WONDER POTION.

trying to be as spoiler-free as I can.

Good lord.

I was not expecting such an emotional experience.

Even after I spoiled myself a bit because our daughter (I'm okay to call the child that right? collectively, yours, mine, and our main character's (who is also ours to share)) had some very gif-able moments for me to look up and save.

ugh.

Don't even get me started on how incredibly wholesome the intro sequence is! Or mostly any memory for that matter.

Let me move on...

I heard that this game is often compared to Katana ZERO. I haven't played Katana ZERO but I've watched a friend speedrun it, and I get it, though I can't compare the narratives. But that's not what's important.

SANABI is an incredibly well-told story with fast-pace gameplay. The storytelling succeeds because it gives the player information while keeping that same information from the main character, along with hints to a conclusion that we, as the player, can infer.

and that inference builds and builds, cracking the reality that our main character (MC for short) is experiencing in Mago City until it crumbles.

this is a story is about loss and acceptance.

Our journey with these two vastly different characters, Mari and MC is nothing short of exquisite.

it's hard to put into words without spoiling anything.

each character has a very strong goal. MC is out for revenge, while Mari's is pretty vague until the midpoint, but we can surmise it also as revenge. from the onset, Mari tells you that their goals currently align. and every plot point serves an obstacle in their progress (as it should in a game).

but with every obstacle, their determination and sense of reality is affected. the two grind each other's gears. but also get back to a moderate peace. well, until they can't.

mysteries are thrown around. answers can't, or won't, be given. things happen. the situation changes. Mari and the MC change.

and when the pair finally gets to their destination, it's nothing like they expected. Getting to the end is not what's important.

Mari has an amazing arc. you know what she's after part way through the game. and it becomes clearer how desperate she is. like, what a fascinating character Mari is for being able to act in the manner she does. for being faced with the situation at hand until she can no longer bear it.

MC has an equally fantastic arc. for being such a one-track minded character until he isn't. until he thinks for a moment about everything that's happening. but no answer are given.

it's hard to describe how deeply rooted in emotion these characters are. and I think the experience of them is worth it.

with all that being said, the gameplay was rad.

for me, SANABI puts into perspective how much you can do with a few buttons. for reference, I use a Nintendo Switch-style controller. you never use the B button or the bumpers. you start using Y and left trigger halfway through the game. and I never needed to use the right joystick, even though I could.

my biggest gripe, gameplay-wise, was the ground-less boss fight. I don't know if I'm just bad at the game (I am, though) or if I have a problem with having no ground to stand on. I think the biggest issue is the inability to save oneself at the bottom of the screen. it's a very air-centric fight, so I guess it gets a pass, but it's definitely not my favourite.

everything else was smooth as butter. the introduction of new mechanics was never out of the way. the main mechanics themselves (grappling, swinging, and hooking enemies) were great and ties itself well to the narrative.

even as I was speeding through the finally sequence of the game, I still enjoyed swinging along. in between narrative sequences.

SANABI is a wonderfully crafted game, focused on delivering a thoughtful story with smooth mechanics as its vehicle.

This game is definitely a must-play for anyone!

I have the weird situation where i talked once w a psychologist in passing and she told me point blank that I'm too well behaved to have ADHD, but at the same time, 5/10 people i meet on the regular either ask me to my face or claim i feel very ADHD

I guess I'm not diagnosed as much as I'm peer reviewed

( it also isn't mean when they say it and it doesn't change the way we interact, but it's interesting)

I used to work for a psychologist (her daughter was autistic, this was what I did back then) and in a meeting we had in her office one time, she told me I was "like a butterfly" because I "flit[ted] from thing to thing" (talking about my career, I believe). Which, well, accurate. I had been diagnosed at the time, but I hadn't told anyone. So she was picking up on it without realizing it.

I was recently told of a family that took their middle daughter to their family doctor because they thought she might have ADHD. The doctor said there was no way because "she's too calm". The parents brought up that they thought ADHD presents differently in girls, and the doctor said "that's a myth." (Parents did not give up, child has diagnosis and is able to access the supports she needs as a result.)

One conversation definitely does not a diagnosis make. I can say that we tend to recognize our own, though, and if you think it may be accurate and that accommodations/treatment might be useful, it could be worth looking into getting assessed.

child me would never have believed it but after more than 25 years, my "garuru leg" has finally found its missing body, in a manner of speaking!

I had this action figure when I was young and it was one of my favourites, but I somehow lost all but the front left leg...... I kept it around in a jewellery box all this time as a jokey noncommittal "haha someday I'll find the rest of him" thing, and the few times I had looked on Ebay for the figure it was always too expensive being pretty old and mostly coming from overseas, so I figured it would never actually happen-- but I was looking again last month and I found one bundled with two other figurines for verrrry cheap (relatively speaking; it was $5 USD for the figures which would have been an absolute steal if I were from the US... overseas shipping was actually another $35 lol)

AND even more serendipitously, it was missing the exact same leg as the one I still have!! the figures just arrived and I can say without a doubt my garuru leg is finally back home, even if it's definitely not the exact same figure as the one I lost (funny how every one of these is always missing the wings and/or shoulder cannons though)! he's a wonderful AUS/USA chimera and I've had him for an hour but I love him just as much as the one I had as a child haha-- he can even still do the snappy thing where you push the tail down and the mouth opens which I used to love so much... asdffff what a great thing to come home to after a long and busy night at work,,,,,, ,,

I uh, don't fancy my odds of finding another listing out there of "just two wings and one shoulder cannon from a 1999 Bandai Digimon MetalGarurumon Posable 2" Biting Action Figure" soooo I think my search is as good as complete haha...... :')

Yesterday/tonight was rough. I wasn’t in the best mindset most of the day and ending up sleeping a lot. But I did get the first day of Whumptober written and then did a little work on my series The Dixon Chronicles. I’ve just read a very positive review of TWD: Daryl Dixon so I’m going to end the night on that, I think. Tomorrow is a busy day and I’m gonna need some energy/strength to make it.
