#not diagnosed but peer reviewed

I have the weird situation where i talked once w a psychologist in passing and she told me point blank that I'm too well behaved to have ADHD, but at the same time, 5/10 people i meet on the regular either ask me to my face or claim i feel very ADHD
I guess I'm not diagnosed as much as I'm peer reviewed
( it also isn't mean when they say it and it doesn't change the way we interact, but it's interesting)
Sent April 28, 2023
I used to work for a psychologist (her daughter was autistic, this was what I did back then) and in a meeting we had in her office one time, she told me I was "like a butterfly" because I "flit[ted] from thing to thing" (talking about my career, I believe). Which, well, accurate. I had been diagnosed at the time, but I hadn't told anyone. So she was picking up on it without realizing it.
I was recently told of a family that took their middle daughter to their family doctor because they thought she might have ADHD. The doctor said there was no way because "she's too calm". The parents brought up that they thought ADHD presents differently in girls, and the doctor said "that's a myth." (Parents did not give up, child has diagnosis and is able to access the supports she needs as a result.)
One conversation definitely does not a diagnosis make. I can say that we tend to recognize our own, though, and if you think it may be accurate and that accommodations/treatment might be useful, it could be worth looking into getting assessed.
Either way, you're welcome here. Peer review is valid!

ngl, self-diagnoses doesn't harm anyone.
"They're taking away resources from actually autistic people!" where. proof for that. Also, most resources that non-diagnosed autistic ppl can get are just DIY remedies(headphones, sensory toys, ect), how is that taking away from your remedies.
i think instead of saying "no you cant self-diagnose or can only under specific circumstances", we should be sharing resources to help people who are questioning if they really have a condition or not
if you want ppl to stop incorrectly thinking they have autism, maybe we can just make content where we talk abt what autism actually entails and what is/isn't an autistic trait. instead of saying all self-diagnosers are faking on purpose
Information is the best killer of misinformation actually if you didn't know
#autism#self diagnosis#neurodivergent#neurodiversity#mental health#mental illness#like im only clinically diagnosed with depression and anxiety#but do you know how expensive a psychiatrist is? or how much energy it takes that i just dont have (for some reason)#and the history of mental disorders in my family give me a good idea on what i have#so like no im not faking i just cant afford a piece of paper that confirms it#plus peer reviewed diagnoses are never talked abt in these debates#bc i never considered autism until my diagnosed (since before 10 yrs) friend mentioned i might have it

Thoughts/behaviors that are hella autistic, in hindsight:
Not sending a message/thought in a group chat until someone else does first because I don’t know what the “appropriate” amount of time to wait to switch topics is (especially if the previous topic was sad/heavy or celebratory).
Full-on copying wording and movement from employers/people of authority because anything they did without being judged for got added to the “socially acceptable in this context” list.
Waiting until I was alone to jump up and down, shake, or squeal.
An infinite amount of other things I will continue to notice and recognize.

When the idol you look at and see copious amounts of autism says if people want to know what he’s like they should look at Most Stereotypically Autistic Guy from popular anime All These Dweebs Have Autism
#blahblahblah autism isn’t quantifiable but look#and it’s questionable to peer review diagnose someone you only know parasocially#i would never say *to him* ‘baby that’s the autism’#but like#i am right#i bias based on who i think has autism compatible with mine

I do not wish to be human anymore. I would just like to be vaguely human shaped and squeezed tremendously tightly. Even more so I would like to go hitchhiking through the galaxy with a human shaped alien from Betelgeuse V. I would like to visit an island full of genetically engineered dinosaurs. I would like to go on a quest to find a stolen lightning bolt. Considering what is actually within the realm of possibility, just a good tight squeeze will do.

I don’t know her#story of my peer review:#had a formal diagnosis for adhd but not for ASD#went to a new psych to get back on medication#in the session we basically reviewed my original diagnosis#i left with a script for meds and with a shiny new ASD diagnosis#moral of the story: now that I have been peer reviewed and granted tenure#I can clearly armchair diagnose everyone in my life#and be 100% correct every time#this is not fallacious at all

Was responding to a thread about why autism self dx is considered "harmful" and I honestly hit the nail on the head here. Abled people can only listen to disabled people who they have already discredited and therefore put back in the "abled" category in their minds. And they would still rather listen to those people than to actual disabled/autistic people. Lol. Lmao.
