RQOTD: Where is your OC from? What is/was their life like there? Do they consider this place their home? What ties them there? Have they moved on or do they stay there for their entire life, why or why not? (Feel free to answer and/or forward this to more people ♥)

I’ll answer this for both Amir and Dani since they are the only OCs of mine (so far) who are a couple, whose lives are intertwined. ❤️ The answers are based on a story I’m perpetually rewriting so please excuse me if there are any plot holes. I tried to mix realism with TS3 lore. A very long response is below the cut!! I don’t expect most people to read it all but if you do, just know that I appreciate you very much 💖

Amir: Amir is from Egypt. His life there was materially comfortable, but his upbringing was very traditional and governed by rigid expectations. He never felt free to be his authentic self and always felt like an outsider in society. He does not consider Egypt his “home” in the truest sense of the word and he hasn’t visited his family in years, always citing school and work as excuses.

Several years ago, he came to the town of Sunset Valley, Simerica, to attend university on a scholarship. The Sunset Valley Institute of Technology (SVIT) was hardly prestigious, but he hadn’t been accepted to any of Simerica’s more famous schools because of his good-but-not-great high school grades. Still, he saw this as his one chance to leave his strictly controlled life in Egypt and see the world, so he took it.

His career goal is to become a journalist covering hard-hitting political and human rights topics. He wants to eventually move to a big urban city like Bridgeport, where there are more professional opportunities and a more progressive and open-minded culture. A recent graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, he is currently employed at a small local publication in Sunset Valley, writing mundane stories about the town’s goings-on, and he has no passion for it whatsoever, but at least it pays the bills. Amir feels disconnected from his family, his country of origin, and the white picket fence suburbia that is Sunset Valley. His co-workers are nice (some of them), and he has a few friends from SVIT, but the only reason that compels him to stay is because his first love Dani is here.

Dani: Dani’s mother emigrated from China to Sunset Valley to pursue her career when Dani was just a baby. Dani grew up in Sunset Valley but doesn’t consider it “home”, because they have almost zero friends here and their relationship with their mother has always been strained.

After high school, Dani went on to attend SVIT because it was the nearest and most affordable post-secondary institution available, and there they met Amir. The two fell hard and fast for each other. Unfortunately, since they were both emotionally immature young adults, their relationship didn’t last. Their whirlwind romance ended on rocky terms. Despite that, they have a hard time forgetting each other, what with being each other’s first loves and being what feels like the only 2 queer people in a small town and all...

A recent graduate like Amir, Dani currently works a dead-end food service job in the town centre which just so happens to be near Amir’s place of work. Nothing ties Dani to Sunset Valley. They have always wanted to leave, and the only thing they care about is saving up enough money to make it happen. Amir often sees Dani around town in passing, but only dares to watch them from afar, since for all intents and purposes they are strangers. Unbeknownst to Amir, food service is only Dani’s day job... their secondary source of income pays much better, and has allowed Dani to build up a large amount of cash savings in a relatively short period of time.

By the time Amir musters up the courage to reconnect with Dani, to try and start over, it’s a little too late. Just when their relationship seems to be improving, Dani disappears with suspicious circumstances, leaving Amir with a million questions and only a few clues. Curious, perceptive and determined to get to the bottom of things (he’s a journalist after all), Amir is soon hot on the trail of the one person he can’t let go of. (I don’t want to spoil the rest of the plot hehe.)

For Amir, Egypt is not home, not in a physical or emotional sense, and neither is the town of Sunset Valley because he’s an outsider with no roots here. For Dani, they have no strong social ties to Sunset Valley, and their house doesn’t feel like a home even though they’ve lived here their whole life. Their familial roots may be in China, yet that is a place they’ve never been to.

One of the reasons why Amir and Dani are so attached to each other is because they both don’t feel like they belong or fit in anywhere. Sunset Valley is just a place they’re both living in for the time being. Neither of them has a place to truly call home, given their personal histories. But with that also comes the freedom for them to redefine what “home” means. Perhaps “home” can just be the peaceful apartment you return to at the end of the day. Perhaps “home” is not where you were born but where your chosen family is. Perhaps “home” is something you have to create for yourself, over and over again as your life goes on. Idk, it’s just an interesting concept to think about, especially for queer people, immigrants, and people with complicated family relationships.

I wrote such an in-depth answer because the topic of “home” is central to Amir and Dani’s story arc. Thank you for such a thoughtful question @lazysunjade and thank you, reader, if you made it to the end of this VERY LONG ESSAY :)

RoW Theories and Things I Want to See

with RoW literally a few weeks away, here’s some theories your way.

this is Really long. like, really very long; mind you.

Nikolai might become a disabled character.

It’s just the vibes. If we can take reference from the Too Clever Fox story, there’s a line that says “...and his [Koja’s] fur never quite sat right the same...”, which might hint at it (mostly bc i don’t want him to die). Also if this is indeed possible, it can be used to address ableism if it exists in this universe, especially since Nikolai is someone in the highest position of power.

Zoya will experiment the shit out of powers.

Idk why the synopsis says that using her powers might be a great deal, which tbf will be because she is truly the most most powerful atm; but Zoya wouldn’t mind taking the step outside of the old norms and bend the orders until they serve their purpose. That’s the entire goal rly.

But all along, she will consciously keep herself mindful to not hunger or discharge her power in a way that may cause harm. She knows the tyranny of the Darkling and the ways he employed. She knows better.

More character depth to Zoya.

Given the excerpts, the book does seem to explore Zoya’s infinite grief. And of course her Suli heritage, which a great part of the fandom consistently wants to shadow what with the talk “white features/ part Ravkan” bs.

But there’s more. I hope RoW will show Zoya’s dilemma (that was alr hinted in KoS) she has with the power she holds, the responsibility she has with having that power + using it in the way that will not be detrimental to her and the country. It will be a great way to portray her self-awareness and doubt and insecurity. She is a good leader, that much is told in text but not shown. There’s character development from the end of R&R until KoS that makes her evolve from a what she was then to the capable and mature 22 year old she is in KoS.

Of course all of their capabilities will come to light in RoW but I think Zoya and the agency to her as a character will play an integral part. More so because Zoya is to be the conduit to reversing the current Grisha orders, which runs in parallel with the fact that she needs to go back, go back to the roots of her Grisha knowledge and roots of her i.e. her unending grief and trauma.

She will need to forgive herself while also dealing with the guilt and anger she may have caused due to her position and power. All of this while dealing with her own complex and contrasting emotions due to her own trauma.

Nikolai is held for treason.

The word of allying with The Darkling may be out and that is enough reason for the entire country to turn against him. The secret about the monster causes issues more than enough already, and this will plunge the country into deep political turmoil and threats to security. So RoW will be more politically driven. That said...

There’s no overt war.

By this I mean that there will not be war on the battlefield, both armies or more charging at each others’ enemies and such. Ravka cannot afford one either. The excerpts have already proved that. There will be skirmishes akin to a war scenario, but a complete battle like the last battle in R&R? Like a final battle? That’s not going to be there, I think… What I’m assuming might happen is that the Fjerda and Ravka will take a possible Cold War route, if it isn’t already the case they’re already dealing with atm.

Ravka’s monarchy will collapse.

It may become a democracy or any other form of public or majority vote. But the monarchy (as well a possible dictatorship, esp with the Darkling returned) will be eliminated. ...Or so I hope, since it has been alluded to in KoS.

But that poses many problems. With no one line for the throne, let alone with a crime so dark like a blot on Nikolai’s skill (of taking the Darkling’s help), it is possible that Ravka will shun it, right alongside being torn about it because Nikolai has been, for the best of his ability, a good King. All of this in line with the Resistance rising in West Ravka.

This ties in with the court matters, especially if I want to hold the further points I make true. The resolution to acquit Nikolai of his charges requires a testification forth a jury which will then make a decision about his motives and future.

Zoya as the Interim Head.

After all of this, Zoya’s point about Ravka not accepting a Grisha Queen will be true after all, because there will be no monarchy to welcome such an arrangement.

But Ravka will need a good and trustworthy leader despite Grisha powers and Zoya is the best person to take care of that. The comment “...becoming a steady leader...” and the “Welcome home, Commander,” were there in KoS for a reason (and this is what I think it will link to).

That being said, there’s more nuance to this than my summary. Zoya is a character of colour. That—in addition to the already existing threats, objections and possible question of capability in the position—ill play into how she will be able to discharge her responsibility. It’s not going to be convenient.

A smoother/more structured transition

Once after the monarchy collapses and a leader must be chosen, it will not be Nikolai. Nor will it be Zoya, though she might serve as an interim head. What I assume might be possible is that someone older is chosen, someone older and loyal and with the proof of knowledge and service to the country. Possibly by majority vote or elected by a council.

Instead of the sudden change, this can be a smoother (if that can even be said about such a major political scenario change) or more structured. I also say this because a. if Nikolai is indeed charged (and later acquitted), firstly his political career will already hold a blot if the word about using the Darkling as a resource is out and secondly, he’s way too young to serve as the leader (by modern standards, sure, but like, the required age will be set while drafting the constitution? currently its 35+).

Instead, the current cast can become representatives (which Zoya would already be, (mostly the head of the) international committee that safeguards the Grisha all over the world) and the Triumvirate will be dissolved. (it should be, tbh)

And hey, b. after all of this, they can and kind of need to take a step back. Nikolai and Zoya will be able to truly explore their relationship, given how Nikolai mentions how he wouldn’t marry unless he’d have had the chance to court someone and marry someone he barely knows nor knows him. For Zoya’s part, she does know Nikolai but surely probably not the extent of openness that a healthy relationship has, and on Nikolai’s part, he admits he barely knows her beyond as a General except for just little things about her.

They could be able to realize and work on their feelings while alongside being involved with the workings of the country and the constitution.

“One day you will overstep and I will not be so forgiving.”

Need I say more? Something that Zoya does will cost her Nikolai’s goodwill and we know Zoya knows her practicality and the extent to which she will unapologetically move if there is threat to the country and its King. She will do what was right and required.

A major part of that line ties in with Magnus Opjer and I think with the confidence in the versatility of her powers, Zoya might as well move w/o any word to the Triumvirate to eliminate the most direct threat to the throne. This will bring splits in Nikolai and Zoya’s relationship.

How this tension between them will be resolved without compromising either of their values, without playing into fandom stereotypes and others must be carefully handled. All of this while showing the best of their dynamicity, practicality and priority as they carefully pull out just those weak sticks of the jenga without putting the whole country into trouble. And with a war in plain sight, they’d know better than pointlessly argue and would rather see how the two of them are wrong. This ordeal will bring out just how condensed power is in the current scenario, imo.

Importance on the way women have shaped history.

Something that KoS has already set precedence for. Zoya being a PoC, Nina taking into account of the sufferings of women she comes across and the consistent ‘Who will remember them?’ will be elaborated on further. As for how it is done and how well it is done, that remains to be seen.

Baghra is alive but maybe not thriving bc she’s stuck in the Ice Court.

They entered a chamber where an old woman sat with her hands chained, flanked by guards. Her eyes were vacant. As each prisoner approached, the woman gripped his or her wrist.

A human amplifier. [...] But the Fjerdans used them for a different purpose – to make sure no Grisha breached their walls without being identified.

Kaz watched Nina approach. He could see her trembling as she held out her arm. The woman clamped her fingers around Nina’s wrist. Her eyelids stuttered briefly. Then she dropped Nina’s hand and waved her along.

Had she known and not cared? Or had the paraffin they’d used to encase Nina’s forearms worked?

- Chapter 22. Kaz; Part 4: Trick to Falling, Six of Crows.

Nina will be the one to free her and together they might wage a war from Djerholm together.

This gets even more interesting because we know the anguish and scorn that Baghra feels for her son at the same time; she understands the wrongness that he used to seek and will continue to. Zoya does take Baghra’s name at the Fold when she mourns and rages over how people forget the destruction and most importantly, forget the women. Baghra could be the symbol of the stag as the art piece depicts, or will be shown with relation to the Darkling’s powers.

As for how she will play into the story, perhaps she will be the one to help reverse and find the roots of the orders, in the sense that changes the perception of the Grisha powers for the Grisha as well as the common folk of Ravka. She is the only other person other than Juris and the Darkling to have the age of eras together, knowing Ilya Morozova, and she will be instrumental in giving Ravka an advantage over Fjerda. Either that or she will help in scrubbing the prejudices of Fjerda slowly away with whatever powers she has left. Or both.

Alina will reappear, but will not contribute to the plot significantly.

Zoya understands that the truth she knows about the Darkling is very minimal not enough to end him for once and for all. It makes sense that she will probably consult Alina for it. So, Malina appearance, possibly at the orphanage. Alina will not directly contribute to this war, but she will play a critical role in defeating the Darkling.

Besides, Alina —and Baghra— are the only ones who know that there has only ever been two Darklings. Zoya did sense, multiple times during KoS, that the Darkling is damn old. Yuri mentions it. And while it is not outright specified, the fact that Zoya thinks that she realizes just how ancient Lizabetha is in context of meeting the Darkling is enough proof for her to seek more information about the age and the older skill of the Darkling.

And I think it goes without saying that I want to hope that the Darkling and Alina will not meet. Pls, she’s had enough.

Lada is the lost, other friend that Zoya refuses to bury.

“She saw her mentor die and her worst enemy resurrected, and she refuses to bury another friend.”

Liliyana is dead, we know. But there’s no other mention of Lada except for the “wondering what happened to the pug faced girl.” Lada is possibly a part of the group of women and a Grisha returning to Ravka from Fjerda, exploited by the parem. She might die being unable to withhold the sheer torment of the parem induction, which will devastate Zoya because Lada was also the closest she’s had to a family with Liliyana.

Either that or Lada is already dead or dies some other way, and Zoya cannot bring herself bear the grief of losing her.

Cameos: Inej and Jesper.

The most likely of the crows to appear in RoW are Inej and Jesper and they’ll play equally important roles in the plotline. Here’s a breakdown of why:

Inej

Inej has taken the responsibility of becoming a slave hunter, and it makes sense for Inej to make an appearance in the book, given that there’s going to be a ship taking the Grisha from Fjerda to Ravka.

The women aboard are vulnerable and require immediate attention, which Inej will immediately zero in on. She will have enough reason to suspect both Leoni and Adrik on the ship, especially when the jurda parem is still a secret. Leoni and Adrik cannot give that information away because they don’t trust Inej (and have no reason to either). Inej won’t trust them either, not until she understands that the reason why the women are being taken to Ravka and for what reasons.

Which gives her excellent reason to step in, try to analyze the situation and help the women accordingly.

Here’s an exciting thought though. Once after the entire misunderstanding is overcome and Inej understands (esp. if Nina is brought into the conversation and security and secrecy of the conversation is ensured), there may be discussion about how the Grisha might find a safer space in Ravka.

Inej’s appearance might also extend to playing a pivotal role in giving Zoya the confidence to seek her heritage and where she hails from, to embrace the part of her past and forgive herself and others for her mistakes.

ALSO,

Grisha finding a safer space in Ravka will mean that Inej can pitch Jesper’s case for him to Zoya. Being the highest authority who takes cares of the responsibilities of the Grisha, Zoya will be the best person to talk about this with.

And so, here comes Jesper.

Jesper

For one, I wish Jesper and Leoni interact, talk and just bond like the iconic siblings they would be. <3 But more than that, Jesper plays very integral to the plot for more reasons.

Jesper’s arc will parallel Zoya’s. Both of them are new to their powers in their own individual sense; Zoya is trying to use her new powers in a way that hasn’t been done before, thereby breaking the Grisha orders of powers and Jesper (assuming he has decided that he might want to learn and embrace his Grisha powers) is learning them afresh.

This journey of them trying to embrace, learn and relearn and reject older norms and experiment really work in tandem.

That will lead us to a further (plot) theories.

Ties with Novyi Zem

As of the KoS end, Ravka has no support from anyone atm. Sure the Kerch will provide funds but Ravka has no real allies. Here’s where Novyi Zem and Jesper come in.

We know Novyi Zem is a new country and also that it is the second safest country for the Grisha in the universe. As of KoS, their agreements are not renewed and they would be since between Kerch and Novyi Zem, Ravka was forced to pick Kerch. Yet Ravka needs their help in acquiring jurda for the antidote.

So here’s the deal: Ravka will get their jurda but at many conditions that the Novyi Zem will impose on Ravka to not let exploitation get in the way.

The conditions imposed could be (these are just some at the top of my head but I hope there are more to ensure the safety and security of the Zemeni, in Novyi Zem and in Ravka too) :

Naval support from Ravka

We know of the Zemeni ships and ofc Nikolai has been hard at work trying to develop plans to use the sea to its fullest advantage. While the news of the izmars’ya isn’t public, Zemeni can place a condition for technical aid from Ravka since Ravka does have the technical knowledge it can dispatch as a condition.

A Grisha School in Novyi Zem

Think about it. Ravka, despite being the safest place for the Grisha, still isn’t entirely safe. Not all Grisha become soldiers in Ravka, they have a choice to abstain but those who are training are still recruited a honed for purpose alike preparing for war, especially the teens and preteens from the time of the Civil War. The training does take a lot of time. Ravka intends to make a home first and then service, but at the moment, while the Grisha are provided safety, it’s not assured in the best sense. Both the facts about a home and service are in precarious positions atm.

TL;DR: Ravka isn’t entirely safe for Grisha therefore the Grisha themselves too are not + Ravka is war torn.

So what happens?

One of the conditions as the next best country that serves as home to the Grisha, Novyi Zem may put forth the prospect of building a Little Palace like institution for the Grisha in Novyi Zem. It sounds morally wrong in the sense that the Grisha there will also be trained for war, but the war will end and soon, the Grisha will not be subject to serve for something but engage in economic activities as anybody else with the progression of time.

All of this won’t happen immediately either; learning their powers, honing it in the way that is unocnventional from what it had been pre-RoW and that transition + the building of the establishment in Novyi Zem and laying foundation for the transnational panel or committee for Grisha that Zoya talks about will all take so much time.

A few Grisha representatives from Novyi Zem can learn at the Little Palace and by the time the construction of the institution is done in Novyi Zem, these Grisha, along with other willing Grisha who either want to return to the country they were born in (like Leoni) or are offered to teach in a different country can do so too.

There will be stricter terms so as to not ensure exploitation and possible colonization in these nations.

Zoya mentions in one of her chapters that eventually there will be a need for the a transnational panel or committee for Grisha. Jesper can Zoya can make it possible, adding in other countries to the panel slowly as the war recedes.

Kaz and Wylan?

Least likely to make an appearance, in my opinion. I think they’ll be mentioned plenty of times or brought up once and given great importance for how they can help in the side plot.

Shu Support:

This is more a hope than an actually theory dfbkdhjadfh but Makhi might have to step down from the throne because Ehri will take the place; either as a Queen (no...) or she might oversee the process of strengthening Shu Han and finding a leader (if she doesn’t want to become one herself).

Ehri is capable, more than capable despite the little we know of her from the last chapter in KoS. All I hope is for an understanding and friendship between Nikolai and Ehri (and the subsequent cancelling of the marriage duH) for this to happen. She has little interest in statecraft but with the time she might spend with Nikolai, she might change her views. Even if not then she still gets the happy ending she deserves with Mayu (which is canon at this point rly).

Emotional Development or Breakdowns

Okay but I really, really, really hope we get to see all the three protagonists lose their shit and deal with their trauma, seek help or trying to stop isolating themselves or anything else they do to cope? Nina, Zoya and Nikolai, all of them cry, all of them get to completely lose it, let themselves be human and healthily cope and learn to rely on the people they trust the most. Like the sheer power and potential to show the myriad of ways to deal with grief, sadness, stress and more and make use of the trio’s backgrounds to show healthy and diverse ways of helping themselves, by letting themselves and others help them is just *combusts* Incredible!

That being said, can I also ask for moments of fear and desolation from the side characters too? Impending war isn’t small business, it will take its toll on people, and all these reactions just cement their fears and what they value the most so. pls. Humanizing them rly.

The Saving Each Other

As much as I mostly kinda hate this trope, there are traces in the KoS that Zoya might be the one to end Nikolai’s affliction. On the other hand, there is talk of Nikolai helping Zoya control her powers which seems counterintuitive when you consider that Zoya knows that there is a line that she must never cross and that she is very, very careful about it and will continue to be.

They can instead be the ones who motivate each other in times of distress as they always do (as shown with how Nikolai tries to gain control over his monster during the burning thorn ritual in KoS, allowing himself the vulnerability but also knowing that giving up will be unforgivable to both himself and Zoya as well) but I seriously do not wish for each other to be the ones directly ending one another's misery. Or perhaps this is just a fear imo that Leigh wouldn’t even take the route of (in which case, thank fuck).

Stab Stab Stab

Zoya gets the chance to kill the Darkling with the rest of her friends. After all, Darkling does call them all his old friends. Just Julius Caeser him all the way and put a bow tie on the book. *chef’s kiss* Everybody deserves a second chance... at ending a tyrant when it fails the first time.

So far, this is it. Rule of Wolves is in less than a few weeks and im- asdfghjkl. not Ready. i’m more Worried than Ready.

AAHDSHD;;;; TYSM FOR ASKING IK THIS IS A SIMPLE QUESTION BUT I WILL USE ANY CHANCE I GET 2 RAMBLE ABT ART TECHNIQUE & WHATEVER BC ITS MY FAVE FUCKING THING IN THIS WHOLE WIDE WORLD

My brushes r actually quite simple !!!!!!! I built them to compliment my very freehand/sketch style. If someone is interested, feel free to ask, I can check how to make them downloadable/whatever, but really I have just a couple things that I focus on when it comes to them!!!

Square tip. I use one in CSP called quadrado, I think its in the original set, I'll have to check that out later? But yeah I feel a square tip allows for some fun angular spots to really come through !!! This is also super popular in painting I think, angles & sharp edges r super important there

Shape dynamics. The super basic stuff. I have two main brushes; my basic square, which is for draw flow stuff, and a rough square, which i mostly use to fill in bigger areas / do some extra shading with. My basic square has more flexibility (a bigger range, a lower minimun value) and the rougher one is less flexable and most of the time chunky.

Density. I find density options more appealing to me compared to opacity, but I cant tell why? exactly???? yk???? But yeah. Again, basic square has more flexibility, and rougher less. I find the flexibility & range in my basic brush SUPER important, since i like sketching within my linework and erasing it away/cleaning it up. (difficult to explain- if someone wants a video feel free to ask)

Basically:

oSoOther settings go a bit more into semantics. I also use a blender tool to sometimes soften areas, and often my eraser is set to erasing on all layers so I can kinda build my linework ON my sketch layer and use it in the back as some extra flow.

My current style of drawing is inspired by som rly specific artists that I can talk abt if someone wants 2 hear. I do intend to experiment w stronger lines, im just a wuss and like all... squishy stuff ; v ;

U DIDNT ASK, but again bc i just loooove rambling abt this shit, some additional things that have personally helped me w linework!!!

Those super basic linework practices !!! Just drawing straight lines endlessly, drawing a squicle and trying to replicate it now w a slower stroke

Forcing urself to sketch fast; croquis !!!! I recommend croquis cafe for anyone looking to do this kinda stuff online, its GREAT. Just focus on the time, not how good the sketch is. Croquis is FANTASTIC. it helps u develop muscle memory for unique strokes, develop understanding of what u need to pay attention to (are you paying attention to shadow, light, where the weight of the body is, the squished parts, the stretched out parts, the skin, the muscle, the hair, etc) (ive personally done sessions just focusing on darkest shadow, midtone shadow etc, or light, or the stretched out parts, or just like, a few lines to give the idea of the pose ((eg 5 sec croquis)) ((tho i havent seen those in any web stuff, i had a class where we had those and they were fantastic))) anyways DO CROQUIS AND ALLOW URSELF 2 SUCK AT IT DO IT UNTIL UR HAND HURTS AND UR HEAD HURTS (dont actually do that please) (drink water, take breaks, stretch ur hand)

Warmups !!! before i take on a serious linework, I ALWAYS DO WARMUPS. Some lighter line stuff, flowier line stuff. I often do croquis for this. If i dont do this i get more severe hand cramps, because.... yeah

Traditional sketches w different pens. Preferably ones that u cant erase. Kinda similiarly to croquis, this is super good to just develop more confidence w ur lines. U cant go back and erase them so... U just have to learn to get them right. Im bolding this bcs this is probably the one tip i heard that has helped me the most. All my traditional sketches w pens r ugly as hell but they seriously have helped me so much to get some more freedom and have more fun when drawing & not worry all the time, and its made the process way more enjoyable !!!!

Also please take breaks and stretch ur hand !!! THeres a lot of good guides for artists to stretch their hands :> Seriously. Take care of urself.

Do you have any tips for drawing tears? You always make them look so beautiful and realistic. What I’m trying to say is you’re really good at drawing sad people

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! unfortunately i don’t have a step by step to accompany this answer but i’ll do my best to describe my thought process!!

for some of these i rely heavily on layer modes like color dodge, add, and overlay. i try for the most part to keep the colour of the tear tracks very close to the colour of the skin, usually a lighter tone. if i want a bit more drama i will add highlights to the tears using rly vibrant spots of the light source colour, or a colour from elsewhere in the piece or character design.

the way i draw them is stylized and i lean Full Force into melodrama so KLJSDHFKLSDF if this is Too Much you can dial it back by using a very delicate brush or lowering the layer opacity after you’ve drawn the tears.

i also like to add little spots where tears might pool on the face or stick to the eyelashes. it’s fun to draw and gives me more room to dot in colour and light!!

Also blush! Even if it’s just the tip of the nose or under the eyes, it gives a flushed look since crying............. is a whole situation sdfhklfd,gdf

ok... ok finishing off with what i personally try to keep in mind Whenever i draw tears:

- the tear drop has weight, and will travel down the surface of the face. pose and face shape will affect the path of the tear. play with eyebags, laughlines, corner of nose and mouth, under the chin, etc..... where r those dang tears going

- the tear drop will reflect and refract light!! give it a shadow, add hints of colour pulled from the character’s palette inside the droplet, this is ur chance to add GLITTER

- is it a tiny, barely held back tear or is this character absolutely going through it?

putting this under a cut b/c it's so long but honest thoughts aobut padam padam --

i think padam padam is reeeeaally rough around the edges rn -- don't really feel like i can critique the choreo because .. i feel like shoma improv'd a not insignificant amount of it lmao

e.g. the different opening choreo -- i think he forgot the intro choreo (maybe he forgot which hand is supposed to be covering the face again and just gave up lmao) and just performed gravity's instead jflkjdsa;falkfjldsaf

and some parts he seems to be gesturing thru. whatever it's just an ice show, and it's an ex (for now ... :3c) i'm not actually bothered

3/4 time is sooooo lovely (oboe! bolero!), particularly if it's a waltz. and i think the choreo does take advantage of that.

also i actually like this version of padam padam for shoma -- musically speaking, i personally don't like covers that add all this unnecessary orchestration to lend "depth" to the sound (but really just end up genericizing it by forcing melodrama where it's not thematically or narratively justified).

but i don't necessarily take issue w/ it in the context of fs -- the music should always be secondary to skating and sometimes the most fs-complementary music is ... corny music ... ).

standing alone, patricia kaas's cover is a bit much for me, but i think if any skater can convincingly deliver a program to corny music (e.g. nessun dorma???? that meme song??), it is shoma, and it's a testament to his artistry. so my expectations r as high as ever

also wow, look at this season's repertoire -- 3 programs, 3 different types of angst. unique choices for his world champion victory lap (as one might see it). this is not a criticism. i love it, it's what i want. just unexpected?

it's as if in light of nathan and hanyu's retirement, shoma now establishes a rivalry w/ vincent for the title of Saddest, Most Angst-Ridden Man in Figure Skating. it's a tall order, shoma. one does not easily out-angst a man who writes poetry in his free time. imo a world champion should pick his battles more strategically ...

now that i've been following shoma's fs career for long enough to see the programs come together for 1 season, i feel like i have some idea of how he interprets choreography. shoma has a tendency of "smoothing over" choreographic details, for better or worse. practically speaking, even when he doesn't execute the mvt as intended, it still looks pretty good (relatively speaking).

but when he's not rly in it, the choreographic distinctiveness and clarity of intent of his movements rly take a hit. i think that's partially why shoma thinks stephane's choreo is harder to execute, b/c stephane is not an abstract choreographer at all (bolero, mj, gravity are all very narrative. i think of them as "pop icon programs" b/c there's a lot riding on the personal charisma of the skater, and their ability to embody an identity. truly stephane is the britney spears of the figure skating world), whereas mihoko-sensei comparatively is. and I'd say kenji is somewhere in the middle (lots of precise poses and images, but ones that do not necessarily refer to a narrative or reflect a state of interiority the way steph's choreo does).

I wonder if its difficult to skate three programs from three very different choreographers.

OK SO. lemme like. first explain the age range bc well. no one is sure of his age but the official kof 2001 site says 16-18. he um. this guy has been thru a TON. im like gonna try n keep it kinda vague w his past and stuff bc his story line. wahh. very sad v emotional etc and i dont wanna overspoil. BUT. i will begin w nice little trivia things that are not upsetting <3 his fave food is beef jerky and he dislikes sweets! he rly doesnt like fighting in the kof tournaments (for good reason </3) hes got epic fire powers and hates sports!

THE ESSENTIAL K' (quick rundown on personality!)- hes a man of VERY few words and is very like solemn. he is the embodiment of 😐 and when u see him smile its like rare. he like rly struggles w social situations and a lot of his friends seem to have latched onto him instead of the other way around. hes like just. not super polite but he does care about his friends he just like?? isnt great at showing it. he is VERY jotaro kujo part 3 adjacent. fave fun fact about him is the end of i believe?? kof 99??? or maybe kof 2000. unsure. but maxima calls him dash-man. i think its fun <3 maxima is like his bestie because of circumstances (k' is like. very lore full and i dont wanna get TOO heavily into it for spoilers n stuff <3) and i just! i think its very swagtacular how theyre friends and found family. he like does have a kinda big found family w Whip and Kula Diamond (his sister figures) as well as Maxima! OK. now i like. wanna um. sure share info w u. so K' is the protagonist of the NESTS saga (which takes place over king of fighters 99-2001 in terms of game plot!) hes (kinda, youll see later) made to be a clone of Kyo (who was the previous protagonist) and like this causes a lot of problems bc he HATES being compared to him or fighting w him or even being involved in this tournament in general. but like his past is summed up kinda quickly as he was a normal kid and him and his sister Whip got kidnapped by this like. SUPER bad crime organization named NESTS and he got injected w Kyo's DNA and kinda had the killua hxh treatment of raised to be a weapon since he was a child. i say hes KIND OF a clone bc thats what he believes due to brainwashing. hes basically (along w Maxima) forced to join the KOF tournaments bc NESTS has control of him in a way. hes um. been thru a lot. hes my little bestie but like oh my god. he suffers constantly, but like, thru out the games he kinda like gets closer w both Maxima and Whip, and goes from finding Kula to be an annoying kid to someone he does genuinely care about and consider his best friend.

Oh boy that post I reblogged about Todoroki and Iida understanding memes & pretending not to got me INSPIRED so here r some Izukrew groupchat/meme headcanons:

Everyone thinks the bakusquad chat is crazy and while they’re right, the izukrew chat is just as wild

They have probably planned acts of vigilanteism in here I mean what?

The chat has definitely made at least 164 different plans to kill End**v*r, just in case. They aren’t gonna actually use them they’re just a precaution & a way to vent (probably. End**v*r better watch what he does tho). Someone in the squad had a bad day? Make a plan to kill End**v*r, you’ll feel better. Todoroki doesn’t always contribute, & they always ask him before they make a new plan to make sure he’s still okay with it, but he appreciates the support & knowing that his friends love him and have his back

Uraraka talks in the chat the most, followed by Todoroki (if sending memes counts as talking), Midoriya, Iida, and finally Tsuyu who lurks a lot but doesn’t respond as often as the others

They have a “days since Midoriya last injured himself” counter that they update daily. The record was 15 days. The average is 3.

They change each other’s nicknames often. They have free reign as long as it’s not too mean, and chat rules say they have to keep whatever their name was changed to for at least a week. Sometimes they match names/ have a theme. Sometimes they bring their name changes over to the main chat too.

There is a designated “Iida Appreciation Day” when the chat is especially nice to and appreciative of Iida that happens in the chat every few weeks because they realize that they as a class are a Lot to deal with & even tho Iida is way more chill in the chat with his close friends than he can be in the main class chat they know he still feels responsible for them & does a lot for them. Iida does not know about Iida Appreciation Day (but when he finds out he is super touched & maybe cries a little bit)

Todoroki is king of the really weird, really abstract memes. The rest of the squad has no idea how he finds them & is kinda too afraid to ask

He also has a reaction image for everything and like,,, he just HAS them he doesn’t look them up, which the rest of the squad realizes cause he replies way too fast to have looked it up on the internet. They are in awe of his power

Besides the izukrew gc, only one person knows that Todoroki memes, and that’s Kaminari, because Todoroki likes to t-pose & do other meme things while Kaminari is looking at him & then as soon as anyone else is about to see what he’s doing he immediately stops. Kaminari is going crazy because nobody will believe him that stoic Todoroki, who has the greatest deadpan expression ever, memes. “Todoroki? Are you sure? Kaminari maybe you’re sick, he doesn’t know memes remember? We yelled ‘this b*tch empty’ in front of him yesterday and he just stared blankly at us.” “BUT MINA I SWEAR I SAW HIM DAB!” Ashido and Sero tried to catch him doing it but gave up after a while, stating that nobody is that good at hiding their meme knowledge. The rest of the izukrew knows obviously but feign confusion because 1) it’s funny and 2) Todoroki is genuinely having fun. When Todoroki eventually reveals to the rest of the class that he can meme, he apologizes for pranking a very vindicated Kaminari.

Iida likes those memes that combine several memes. He sends reaction images that are just memes without text bc he knows his friends will understand exactly what he’s talking about

He’s also king of photoshop & totally uses those skills for evil - he’s rly good at putting Lucky Luciano into pictures, making his friends break into a cold sweat as he sends a picture to the chat that is seemingly the exact same as the one the last person sent. Since they’re so competitive they have an ongoing competition to see who can find him first (Iida keeps the score. Right now Tsuyu is winning, but the ranks change often)

He, like Todoroki, pretends not to know memes, but takes it a little further & pretends not to know teen slang either so he can misuse it in front of people & laugh at his classmates cringing (Iida: Seatbelts are important. As Ashido might say, they are “totes yeet, yo!” Ashido: //crying// IIDA NO! Iida: Does that not mean that it is very important? Ashido: //crying louder// NO!!!). Some classmates attempt to “teach” him but he “just does not get it”. Again the izukrew pretends not to know because it’s funny.

Uraraka is queen of wholesome memes. She has so many “I love my friends” memes & always has cute images ready to send in case anyone is sad or stressed. Everyone in the chat would die for her no questions asked (she will use this to her advantage one day probably).

She also really likes spongebob memes and uses them often. Her favorite is the one where spongebob is wearing those pink frilly glasses

While she is queen of wholesome memes, she’s not afraid to tease anyone & often sends smug/teasing reaction images. Nobody is safe, especially if they tease her first, & if there’s a competition in the chat she goes all in. When she wins anything it’s like “[You’ll Float Too]: (dignitylaugh.gif) whats this? it seems i have won our little competition...” (But then immediately after she sends her first victory message she’s like “lmao jk good game”)

Midoriya sends links to random ass YouTube videos to the chat at 3 am. Sometimes the videos aren’t even memes they’re all might documentaries or something he thought was interesting or thought one of his friends might think was interesting or videos someone made about how they trained their quirk that he thinks might help someone but sometimes they’re completely nonsensical. It’s like a roulette wheel every time someone clicks a link Midoriya sent. Sometimes the chat makes bets about the contents of the video before anyone opens it. Most of the time they’re all wrong.

He doesn’t rlly have a favorite style of meme, but he always has a million specific variations of whatever meme is popular at the time and all past popular memes. His phone camera is like a meme record. He’s rlly good at finding vine comps with good but not rlly well known vines.

He also infodumps in the chat sometimes bc they let him & he is really grateful that his friends are actually interested in what he has to say

Tsuyu sends memes that roast the sh*t out of everyone in the chat. When one of her friends is doing smth stupid she totally calls them out in the form of memes (she’s really good at finding those tiktoks that feel like they are roasting you specifically). She’s a comedic timing genius and knows just when to send things (& because she doesn’t use the chat as much that makes it even funnier). She also is, rather predictably, fond of frog memes

She also loves making those alignment chart type memes (& the ones with like the triangles or the four quadrants) & makes them for/about her friends & classmates often. She is scarily good at reading people and hits the nail on the head 99% of the time. Sometimes she sends them to the main class chat too and the rest of the class is like ?!?!?!?!?!?!

Because she’s a big sister, she often sends reminders to the chat to take care of bthemselves (Iida does this a lot too, but sometimes she has to remind him because he’s so caught up in caring about others he forgets to care about himself. Actually everyone in this chat is guilty of that including Tsuyu smh). Since the others make sure she takes care of herself in return, she’s really grateful for her friends

Bonus hcs:

Aoyama, once he is added to the chat, become the expert at sending selfies of himself looking directly at the camera while a member of the chat is distracted in the background, not seeing him. The chat makes it a game to try and spot Aoyama before he can get a picture, but Aoyama always wins. When asked how he can escape the detection of even those who are always on edge/have been trained to notice every little movement, he just smiles and says “it’s a secret~!”

Shinsou, who eventually replaces M*n*t* in 1A bc this is my city & grape boy is gross, does a thing called “insomniac hours” where he will send a random question to the chat at like 3 am & Midoriya, who is almost always awake then (or sometimes Todoroki Tsuyu or Uraraka if they’re up, and very very occasionally Iida), will give him a super detailed answer. Sometimes during the day the chat plays a version of this where Shinsou asks an obviously nonsensical question and the rest of the chat has to come up with long, nonsensical answers & then votes on the best ones. Many inside jokes were borne from this game.

1. escapism! Dean, Sam, and especially Gabriel. Like Gabriel is a very Evasive person(I feel like so is Sam) when confronted with problems, and he knows Dean at least uses TV to cope. It was a way to run away and try to get the others to understand him, I think. That whole "TV is escapism, this is the real world" and that Dean is the one that really likes it...ouch. Gabe and Sam would be cool to flesh out please Please

2. Cas and Gabe. No I have very little here, but I really like the little bits of their like "oh my god it's you fuck you" thing they have going, please give me more, it was so good. Like you get invested when they know each other and it's just...good. So good.

3. actually family in general. Like Gabriel is too scared to intervene, but doesn't want something to happen, Cas and Dean bonded over the fact that their dads are absent, Sam gets thrust into something when all he wants to do is figure out who he is outside of the context of his family. It was... a lot, and...actually compelling.

4. fucking THIS WAS FUN TOO! like fucking with color grading, actual gags, riffs on tv formulas. It felt so much like a precursor to WandaVision(the freezes, the glitches out, some amount of genre savviness, the "play along especially"(that whole thing about being trapped with a sitcom is so Important here), just...the concept and the baby TV show thing is...so fun.

5. but it's plot? I THOUGHT CHANGING CHANNELS WAS ALL FUN BUT THERE WAS PLOT! like we got Gabe's actual motivations, we got an actual reasoning, we got exposition but it was interesting cuz we were already invested in gabe's moral compass

holy shit that was good.
