yes every single day is a reason to start anew and no, i will not be setting incredibly high expectations for 2024 because the unfortunate truth is that life is all about rolling with the punches, even if they really hit hard, but also. something fantastic about how people still choose new year's day to go "ALRIGHT. NEW YEAR. TIME TO SHAKE OFF THE COBWEBS"
#caroline talks#setting together my list of new year resolutions#and the first item on the list is 'LISTEN TO LESS DEPRESSING MUSIC. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD'#i think somewhere else on that list is gonna be 'watch all the barbie movies'#idk. life is good when watching all the barbie movies tbh#maybe memorize random portions of criminal law. for funsies.#i've been watching suits and god knows i have mixed feelings about mike ross but my brain is happy whenever he does the photographic memory#thingie. like damn harvey me too!#brush up on my korean.#learn how to do an actual pull-up or two.#wear more dangly earrings.#quote an entire episode of leverage.#when i was a kid. i used to be able to quote any line from star trek: 2009 and star trek into darkness#and i need to be able to do that again. it was a fun party trick#learn a new fun fact every day. etc

@weird-ecologies tagged me to name my Top 4 movies from the year I was born, which means I get to expose myself as someone who does not actually watch that many movies AND as a devotee of one particular very questionable movie (Doctor Who TV Movie my beloved, and also a staple of my high school years, for better or for worse)
Including the Baz Luhrmann Romeo + Juliet is sort of a questionable call here because I've only ever seen part of it, but I truly did not have another strong contender for my fourth film and also I respect the concept of weird maximalist Shakespeare on a deep personal level, so I feel like it's allowed to stay.
Tagging @marypsue @howsyourweirdbrotherdoing @thesixthstar @fishdetective @wild-west-wind and @chaumas-deactivated20230115 to join in if you want, though like with all tag memes it is of course totally optional
#to really admit to my cultural ineptitude here. other hit 1996 movies include:#space jam. fargo. independence day. star trek: first contact. etc#but i am perpetually the guy who has never seen [insert movie here]#forever proud of sharing a birth year with the widely panned dr who movie though so i think that says everything you need to know about me#some people live under a rock and instead watch fun but objectively not good science fiction to cope

If I had a nickel for every time a suprise Christian Slater has appeared in what I’ve been watching, I’d have 2 nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice in the past 2 days.
Willow (2022-)
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991)
#I have only seen him in heathers and interview with a vampire and that’s all I’ve seen him in for like 10+ years of watching those movies#now I suddenly see him in 2 things I’m watching for the first time#I just need to let others know of how weird this is to me#willow series#christian slater#allagash#star trek#star trek the original series#mine

i haaaate that trend so much. i've seen series where it was blatantly just a long movie with credits/title cards jammed in every hour or so. that's bad writing when it's a 10+ episode season but at least there's the logic of 'most people won't watch this in a single go, let's put in some breakpoints', but it's absolute nonsense when it's four or five episodes. You made a movie. It's a single movie. It's not 'four episodes of' anything. Cut the repeated credits out and stitch it all together and it's 3.5 hours with pacing very similar to other movies and very dissimilar from tv shows. It's on the long end but it is one movie. Just admit it is one movie and put it in the 'movie' category so people specifically looking for movies see it and people specifically looking for episodic shows do not, and take out the repetitive disruptive breaks so viewers can properly enjoy it. I'm sure view metrics are counted such that a movie artifically chopped into four "episodes" counts as four times as many views or something, or at least the extra intro/outro bits add to "minutes watched", but if your metrics encourage "miscategorizing media so severely customers can't actually use your filters/categories/etc to find what they want and disrupting the viewing experience for no reason beyond 'number go up'" then your metrics are bad and in the long run they'll backfire.
at this point if i'm looking for an episodic show to watch i will completely skip any '[streaming service] original' and half the time dig around for something made before streaming got popular. there's some good modern streaming 'shows' but if i save them for when i'd otherwise be watching a movie i'm less likely to be disappointed.
and the extra wild thing is stuff that's seemingly not even meant to be binged or frankly possible to binge is starting to get like this?? MCU probably being the worst example but we're starting to get movies or TV shows which go way beyond 'referencing existing lore and we don't tell you every detail here but you don't need every detail anyway, it's fine' and fully into 'oh, there is necessary backstory, and it's all in some other media. and this one is going to have some setup for something else, too. so if you want to understand this you need to go watch another movie and if you want to see the conclusion to these scenes you need to wait for yet another movie'. nOT EVERYTHING IS LORD OF THE RINGS AND ALSO EVEN LOTR SETTLED ON BEING A TRILOGY. it's such a turn-off even of movies which sound good because lol sure the main storyline sounds good but. is all of the main storyline even in that one fucking movie or am i ultimately going to have to watch three other movies, two tv shows, and a crossover episode with a series which got dropped from all streaming media and is now only available via torrents.
"binge-worthy show" man fuck that
i want my shows one episode followed by a whole ass week of going a little insane over it with the people on my phone, writing fics theorizing and going over every single scene through amazing gifs and meta, before the next ep drops and the cicle begins anew
#i get using cliffhangers to get people to Tune In Next Week but there is a flip side to that!#the more content viewers NEED to watch to appreciate something the bigger an investment it becomes!#so like yes the diehard fans will watch Immediately to see what happens to their blorbos. but. you can't force diehard fandom.#people who aren't already there won't think 'hm new MCU film looks good enough to do twelve hours of homework for'#and you can STILL HAVE DIEHARD FANS without making shit COMPLETELY incomprehensible to newbies#star trek did it for decades#like even if you just watch TNG without seeing TOS first you are missing some Klingon context but you'll be fine#star wars too i think? idk but from what i hear from fans the extended universe adds A Lot BUT you can also just see the movies#there is a middle ground between 'a thousand unrelated TikToks and YouTube Shorts'#and 'a vast sweeping cinematic universe which will take over a large chunk of your life if you want to watch more than ten minutes of it'#and i wish modern studios would spend a lil more time in that middle ground

First Day
A/N: this has been in my head for a long time because I have random trivial star trek knowledge and whenever they show spencer talking about star trek in the show i go all heart eyes so I wrote a little blurb 🫶🏻 also I had fem!reader in mind when I wrote this but I realized I didn’t actually make any references to gender so 🤷🏻 - mod angel
Pairing: Spencer Reid x GN!Reader
Summary: Spencer bonds with his new coworker over Star Trek.
~~~
It was my first day at the BAU, and I was a little… intimidated being here. I had been mostly keeping my head down and staying quiet, since social interaction wasn’t something I was great at. I was okay just watching the others interact with each other for now.
“Hey, kid,” Derek called out, beckoning Spencer. “I need your help with the crossword.”
Spencer walked over to Derek’s desk, which was next to mine. “What’s up?” he asked.
Derek pointed to the newspaper with his pencil. “7 across: James _ Kirk (Star Trek). 8 letters.”
Tiberius, I thought instinctively. I considered saying it out loud, but he hadn’t asked me, so I decided to stay quiet.
“Tiberius,” Spencer said, almost as fast as I had thought it.
I smiled to myself. I was always the only one who knew about geeky stuff. Until now, I guess.
Derek finished filling in the crossword. “Thanks. I knew it was always James T. Kirk, but I didn’t know what it stood for.”
Without thinking, I spoke up. “Actually, in the third episode of The Original Series, someone who’s fighting Kirk prepares a gravestone for him and it says James H. Kirk.”
Everyone turned to look at me, staring at me with open mouths. I blushed. Maybe I shouldn’t have said anything. But now I felt uncomfortable sitting in this silence.
I cleared my throat. “Um. So. Yeah. It wasn’t always James T. Kirk, as you said. They didn’t mention his full initials until-“
“Episode 13: The Conscience of the King.” Spencer cut me off, his eyes lighting up like he had been dying to talk about this. He walked over to my desk and leaned on the front of it. “The first time they mention it is when Spock is checking his background and speaks it into the computer.”
I nodded, smiling. “Yeah, and they don’t mention the name Tiberius until the 6th movie, The Undiscovered Country.”
“Oh my god, there are two of them,” I heard Emily say.
Either Spencer didn’t hear her or he was purposefully ignoring her. “Actually…” he started, sitting on my desk. He was bouncing a little. “The first time the name Tiberius is mention is in The Animated Series episode BEM.”
“Oh, I didn’t know that.” I admitted. “I’ve never actually seen The Animated Series. Actually, I’ve only ever seen part of The Original Series…”
That only made him sit up straighter. “Do you want to watch it? I have every episode on DVD. I’d be happy to show it to you sometime.”
I smiled. “Yeah, I’d like that. I’ve always wanted to finish watching it, and watch the other shows too. If you don’t mind me imposing…”
He shook his head. “I don’t mind at all. Not a lot of people I know are interested in Star Trek, so I’m happy to show it to you if you’re interested. You can come by my apartment sometime and we can watch it.”
I nodded. “That sounds great. I appreciate it.”
I heard people whispering in the distance.
“Did he just-“
“Shh, don’t say anything, you’ll jinx it. I think this is the first time in history that this has ever worked.”
“And probably the last time it will ever work. This is definitely a unique circumstance.”
I blushed a little as I heard everyone talking about us, but I continued chatting comfortably with Spencer for a while before everyone was interrupted by the news that we had a case. But I was really relieved that, despite feeling so overwhelmed about starting this job, I had been able to make a friend on my first day.
I have a small part in the 1987 television movie (failed pilot) version of The Man Who Fell To Earth. Lewis Smith played the titular character. Beverly D'Angelo played my mom, his love interest. (Fun Star Trek connection: Bob Picardo is also in it).
My character was a Troubled Youth, which I gotta tell you was not a stretch for me at all. I was deeply, deeply hurting at the time we made it. I was struggling not to suffocate on all the emotional and financial burdens my mom put on my shoulders, and fully aware of just how much my dad hated and resented me. You need a kid who doesn't want to be an actor, whose eyes can't hide the pain? I'm your guy.
Anyway, one of the scenes I was in took place in a record store, where Troubled Youth steals some albums, before he is chased by the cops and saved by the Man Who Fell To Earth, who uses a glowing crystal to save his life from ... some scratches on his face.
We filmed the interior of the record store at Sunset and La Brea, in what I think was a Warehouse, and at the end of the day, I was allowed to buy some records at a modest discount.
I was deep into my metal years, on my way from my punk years to my New Wave years, so I only bought metal albums. I know I bought more than I needed or could carry (I was making a point that I was allowed to spend my own money, mom), but the only ones I can clearly remember are:
Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind
Judas Priest - Turbo and Defenders of the Faith
W.A.S.P - The Last Command
(I know this was in March of 1987, because Turbo had just come out.)
Of those, Piece of Mind is the only one I never really stopped listening to, even through all the different it's-not-a-phase phases. I still listen to it, today.
Ever since I became an Adult with a Fancy Adult Record Player And All That Bullshit, I have kept my records in two places: stuff I want right now, and stuff I keep in the library because of Reasons.
Generally, records move in one direction toward the library, even if it takes years to happen. I just don't accumulate albums like I once did, because I'm Old and set in my ways.
Earlier today, I decided that I wanted to listen to an album while I cleaned up the kitchen, and because I wanted to make my life more interesting, I opened the library cabinet for the first time in at least five years.
There was the very same W.A.S.P album from that day in March, 1987. I don't have any of the others -- I looked -- but The Last Command was right there.
Before I really knew what I was doing, I put it on the Fancy Adult Record Player and dropped the needle.
I watched four decades of dust build up with a satisfying crackle, and there was something magical and beautiful about hearing all the skips and the scratches, realizing I remembered them from before.
The title track was just as great as I remembered it. It struck all the same chords in me that it did in the late nineteen hundreds. The rest of the first side was ... um. It just didn't connect with me, and for the few moments I spent trying to find a connection, I don't think it ever really did. I would remember.
But I did remember how much I loved making those mix tapes, and what a big part of them that song was. I did remember how empowering it felt to not just spend my own money that I earned doing work I didn't want to do, but to spend it on music my parents hated, right under their noses. I did remember how impressed Robby Lee was, when I showed him my extensive heavy metal album collection.
Remembering all of that, in one of those cinematic flashes of rapid cut visuals and sped up sounds, told me why I kept this record, while I gradually sold or replaced the other records I bought that day with CDs, then mp3s, then lossless digital files, before finally coming all the way back to records, where I started.
I didn't listen to the second side. I didn't need to. I took it off the Fancy Adult Record Player, and put it back into the library, next to the George Carlin records.
Movie Night
Summary: Spencer finally has the courage to ask you out
Pairing: Spencer Reid x Reader
Category: Fluff
Author’s Note: This is the first fanfiction I've written. English is not my first language and I don't have much experience with writing yet. If there’s anything to improve, let me know! :)
The smell of freshly ground coffee fills the air, and the clinking of cups and the quiet murmuring of others fills the room. Spencer sits at his desk with a half-empty cup of coffee in front of him. He stares at the stack of case files on his desk waiting to be processed. You sit across from him at the table and his eyes keep moving to you. You are completely absorbed in your work and bite your lip every now and then when you need to concentrate particularly. He's noticed you for a while now - since the day you joined the BAU. You got along well from the start and it didn't take long for Spencer to fall in love with you. And today is the moment when he finally has to ask you out. He takes a deep breath, sits up and clears his throat quietly.
“Um... Can I disturb you for a moment?" he asks. You look up to him. “Of course you can. I need a break from all these files anyway,” you say and smile. Spencer becomes nervous as he meets your gaze, but he forces himself to remain calm. “Spence, is everything alright? You look kind of nervous,” you say, tilting your head slightly. “Yeah, um... well, yeah. Everything’s fine, thank you.” He scratches his head nervously and feels his heart beating faster. “I wanted to... uh, ask you something. For a while now. I wanted to ask you if you would like to do something together? I uh, mean outside of work. Well, not that this isn’t nice to work with you! It is nice to work with you, uh, I mean you are nice. So…?“ he rambles.
You look at him for a second, as if contemplating his words. Spencer sees you putting down the pen and slowly frowning - not in the sense of misunderstanding, but more of curiosity. “You mean a date?” you ask him. Spencer blushes and nods, a little too quickly so his glasses almost fall off his nose. “Yes, exactly. A date. If you want. So, I dunno, maybe a movie night? Or... or a walk? Or maybe dinner? Something where we can… uh… talk?” he says. You laugh softly, and for a moment Spencer feels like he's in a bad dream. You're probably not interested in him after all and he, being the idiot that he is, thought that maybe this time it would be different. But then you look him straight in the eyes and your voice is like music to his ears.
“Sounds good, Spence. A movie night actually sounds nice. We can watch Star Trek if you want. I wanted to watch the movie again. When do you have time?" Spencer blinks, as if he's not sure he misheard. Then a shy smile spreads across his face and he blushes slightly. “Um... how about tomorrow?” he asks. “Perfect. Tomorrow at seven?” you ask him with a smile on your face. Spencer nods, a little more determined this time. “You can come over, we can do it at my apartment,” he says. A big step, but it feels right somehow. He smiles when he realizes you’re actually interested and goes back to work.
-
The elevator glides up silently, the quiet hum of the machines filling the room. Reid was standing off to the side as always, his gaze fixed on the floor. Morgan, on the other hand, leans relaxed against the wall, a smug grin on his face. He expected this moment for a long time. “So… what was that with you and pretty girl this morning?” Reid jumps and gives him a confused look. “What are you talking about?” he asks. You know exactly what I mean,” Morgan grins even wider. “You've been staring at her all day. Again. And later you couldn’t stop grinning.”
Reid continues to stare at the floor as his heartbeat suddenly increases. “I wasn’t staring at her…” he murmurs, but his voice sounded anything but convincing. Morgan could hardly suppress his laughter. “Sure, Reid. That's exactly what you did. And you looked like you were stuck in another dimension.” Reid couldn't help but give a quiet, nervous smile. "Perhaps..." he agrees. Morgan laughs loudly and nudges him playfully. “Come on, Pretty Boy! What's wrong with you? For weeks now you can't even say two words near her without getting tangled in your own tongue. But today…” Morgan raises an eyebrow.
Reid slowly turns to him and stares at him as if to make sure no one else was in the elevator. The question hung in the air. Then, in an almost whispering tone, he says, "I asked her." Morgan stares at him as if he didn't hear that correctly. "What?" he asks. “I asked her if she... wanted to go out with me," Reid says, still a little unsure but also proud that he'd even manages to say it. Morgan's eyes widen and for a moment he is completely speechless. Then the grin breaks out of him. “Oh, my God, you actually did it!” he says.
Reid nods, a little shy but also relieved. "Yes. I thought, if I'm going to look like an idiot all day, at least I can do it right," he says. “You're a damn hero,” Morgan says, patting him on the shoulder, “I knew you'd wake up eventually! So what did she say?” he asks. Reid's face lits up for a moment. “She said yes. She’s coming over for a movie night tomorrow.” Morgan shakes his head and grins. “I told you. You could have asked her much earlier.” Reid rolls his eyes the elevator stops and as the doors open Morgan nudges him again. “Well then, Pretty Boy, nice weekend and have fun.” he says and winks.
-
The doorbell rings and Spencer’s heart skips a beat. He opens it hesitantly, squinting nervously at his hands. “Hi… um, hi!” he stammers when he sees you. Your gaze glides over the small but comfortably furnished apartment. “Wow, your apartment is really nice. I like the bookshelves,” you say, entering. Spencer exhales in relief – that sounds good. “Uh, thanks. I...um, tried a bit...to make it comfortable. The apartment, of course, not the bookshelves,” he murmurs as he closes the door behind you, almost hitting himself on the doorframe.
You put your things down and sit on the couch. Spencer’s heart beats even faster, but he tries to stay calm. “So, uh…I was thinking about ordering food. How about Thai food? I know you eat it pretty often,” he says. “Sounds perfect, you’re right, I love Thai,” you say and smile. Spencer nods and takes his phone out of his pocket. “Thai, it is. I'll order us something." He goes into the kitchen and looks at the screen of his phone, nervously running his finger across the screen. The choice suddenly feels overwhelming. "I assume you like... uh, spicy?" he asks without looking back. “Spicy is great,” you shout from the couch. You looks around again.
“Spence, is it okay if I go change in the bathroom really quick?” you call out to him. “Yeah, no problem.” he calls back. You stand up and enter the bathroom where you take off your tight jeans to slip into comfortable gray sweatpants. When you come back out Spencer is sitting on the couch too. “I hope you’re not disappointed that I’m, um, putting on my sweatpants,” you say as you settle back onto the couch. “I just wanted to be comfortable.” Spencer looks at you. “No, that’s… uh, that’s totally okay.,” he stammers. “I actually wanted to throw myself into something comfortable, but… um, I decided not to.” He nervously scratches the back of his head. You laugh quietly. “Well, we still have time before the food comes. You can still do it if you want. Would you like to start a movie while we wait?” you ask. Spencer grins and shrugs. “Star Trek?” he asks. “Sounds good,” you answer with a laugh and Spencer suddenly feels a little less nervous.
-
The television flickers in soft blue tones and casts an unobtrusive light onto the living room. The empty remains of the meal are on the coffee table. The air still smells of chili and coconut. Spencer sits on the couch, legs tucked under him, leaning back. The film is over and the credits roll. But he hardly notices anything about it. His eyes are on you. You threw the blanket over your shoulders, the corner of it wrapped around your bodies and as the movie ended you slowly moved closer to him. Your head rests gently on his shoulder, so inconspicuously, as if it were the most natural moment in the world. You look up at him and give him a small, mischievous smile.
“The movie was pretty good, wasn’t it?” you joke with a sleepy voice but full of enthusiasm. “Yes, really good! Not to be expected otherwise,” Spencer chuckles. He can't take his eyes off you. You seem relaxed - and you are closer to him than ever before. You shift closer to him and your hand happens to touch his but you don't notice because you're talking about something related to movie. He can smell the faint scent of you - something floral, lavender he assumes - and he has a hard time tearing his eyes away from your eyes. He never thought you would lean on him so naturally. But you do. And it feels good.
“I… um, well…” Spencer starts, but then he gets lost in the look you give him and the words disappear. He actually wanted to ask you if you wanted to eat more of that curry you ordered, but now it all seems far too fleeting. It almost feels like he's entering another world, one where it's just you and him. You notice the silence, looking at him with a curious smile. "What? Do you want to say anything else?” Spencer swallows. “Uh, no. I… um, just wanted to…” He blushes and then turns slightly to you. “It's really nice that you're here.”
You look at him for a long time, and a small moment of silence spreads until you finally, almost imperceptibly, lean your head a little closer to his shoulder. Spencer's heart beats faster and he feels like he's in slow motion. What if you notice how nervous he is? What if he does something wrong? “You’re really cute, you know that?” you say suddenly, and the words come out so casually that he’s almost not sure if he’s just imagining them. You lift your head slightly, look into his eyes and smile. “I mean, you're just... really pleasant to be around. I like hanging out with you.” Spencer is so surprised that for a moment he doesn't know how to react. “Really?” he asks, his voice a little too high, as if he’s not quite out of “I-can’t-believe-this-happened” mode.
“Yes, really,” you say, your eyes now so close to his that he almost holds his breath. “I was really happy to spend this evening with you. It feels somehow light and relaxed. Not like so many other dates where you feel kind of uncomfortable the whole time.” Spencer nods, surprised by the words, and can't help but smile a little. “Me too,” he mumbles. "Well, I liked that movie too, but... I mean, this is pretty great, you’re pretty great, too." You laugh softly and raise your hand as if to say something, then lower it again. You pull the blanket a little higher, and at the same moment Spencer notices that you're leaning a little further against him.
You close your eyes as if lost in the moment. Slowly, almost automatically, Spencer places his arm carefully around your shoulders. He's unsure if he should do this, but it feels right, and when you don't pull away, but instead snuggle a little closer to him, he lets out a sigh of relief. “Would it be okay with you if I stayed here tonight? I’m tired and don’t feel like going home,” you say. Your hand is relaxed on his thigh, and the closeness feels so natural that he almost forgets that he's never actually laid on the couch like this with a girl before. “Uh,… of course,” he says, somewhat overwhelmed. He didn't expect that, but since he doesn't want to let you out of his arms anyway, it's not a problem for him. “Good night,” he says quietly. "Good night." you say and smile. The room is quiet and then, when he feels your breathing becoming calm and even, he closes his eyes too.
Sword gays showdown, round 4 of bracket two
Propaganda:
For Hikaru Sulu:
1) Okay, first off: Which version am I submitting? Prime timeline (TOS) or Kelvin timeline (AOS, also known as the reboot movies if you're not in the fandom)? The answer is both. Prime Sulu has the more iconic fencing scenes (and is also said to have other sword related abilities) while Kelvin Sulu is canonically gay. Specifically as a tribute to George Takei btw who played prime Sulu in TOS and is famously gay and an LGBT+ rights activist among other causes. The picture provided is prime Sulu but if you've only watched AOS, feel free to vote for him anyway.
I'm not gonna link any videos here since that would probably exceed the scope of the propaganda section but clips should be pretty easy to find. And if you can't, just trust me: The TOS fencing scenes are amazing. The AOS one is probably fine too but it's been ages since I've watched it and I forgot it even existed so it can't have been THAT memorable.
Fun fact: George Takei initially didn't know how to fence and didn't find out he'd have to until pretty late and started taking fencing lessons only three weeks before the filming of that episode (The Naked Time) and apparently "became so out-of-control and boisterous that he had to be separated from the rest of the production personnel, for their own safety" which, in context of what the episode is about, is just absolutely amazing. Truly iconic.
Anyway, considering Star Trek is an important part of queer history (I'm only half joking) you need to vote for Sulu, we all know George Takei is an icon, make the right choice here.
2) When they got hit with the drunk virus he took his shirt off and started challenging people to duels. Iconic
3) This bitch got the outer space disease that makes you silly, and revealed they were gung ho for fencing, and brought out their sabre to just. Swashbuckle. Goes "/oh my/," and is clearly gay and played by a gay actor
For Olivier:
She is only female general in her nation, and guards the northern border. She fights with a sword even though there are other people with guns. Olivier is unmarried despite being older (not sure how old exactly, but she is a general, and that takes time). To the best of my knowledge she shows no interest in anyone, thus making it possible to interpret her as aromantic and asexual, or as a lesbian. The bit where Mustang offers to take her on a date and she threatens to eat so much she will bankrupt him is funny.
Are there ANY stony/Star Trek AUs?
Okay. Um. I'm just going to assume this is a legitimate question and not actually a way to express frustration about my progress on the sequel I am writing (I stared at this ask for a while), so I will just conclude that you must have missed the Steve/Tony Star Trek AU I wrote, um, back in 2016:
Straight on till Morning (109848 words) by Sineala Chapters: 6/6 Fandom: Marvel (Comics), Marvel 616, Avengers (Comics) Rating: Explicit Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Steve Rogers/Tony Stark Characters: Steve Rogers, Tony Stark, Carol Danvers, Janet Van Dyne, Hank Pym, Wanda Maximoff, Pietro Maximoff, James "Rhodey" Rhodes, Clint Barton, Donald Blake (Marvel), Jocasta (Marvel) Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Star Trek Fusion, Action/Adventure, Romance, Hurt/Comfort, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder - PTSD, Pining, Angst, Secret Identity, Identity Porn, Sex Pollen, Fuck Or Die, Caves, Sex In A Cave, Technobabble, Happy Ending, Cap_Ironman Big Bang 2016, Community: cap_ironman, Podfic Available Summary:
Tony Stark resigned his commission in Starfleet five years ago, after a disastrous away mission, and he swore he'd never go back. He just wants to be left alone to build warp engines in peace. But the universe has more in store for him than that, as he discovers when Admiral Fury comes to him with an offer he could never have expected and cannot possibly refuse: first officer and chief engineer aboard the all-new USS Avenger, a starship of Tony's own design. What's more, the Avenger's captain is Steve Rogers, hero of the Earth-Romulan War. Believed dead for over a century, Steve is miraculously alive... and very, very attractive.
But nothing is ever easy for Tony. As he wrestles with his secret desire for his new captain and his not-so-dormant fears, another mission starts to go wrong, and Tony becomes aware that Steve has secrets of his own -- and the truth could change everything.
So, yeah, if you actually haven't read that one, that'll keep you busy for a while. It's a Trek fusion with comics Steve/Tony, set in the era of the later TOS movies. (This is important so that you can picture the correct uniforms, and also because it actually matters that the events of Star Trek II, III, and IV have happened.) It was a Big Bang fic, so it's got some great art by Ran and Phoenix -- embedded in the story -- and also M_Samro made a really amazing podfic of it, if you like podfics.
For a charity auction in 2017, I promised I would write a sequel, and I plotted the whole thing out and started writing this extremely epic sequel, which was unfortunately, about a plague threatening the galaxy, and I got about 120,000 words in and then 2020 happened and I decided I needed to not be writing it right now. So it went on an extended hiatus.
But the good news is that I've actually gotten back to it! I picked it up again last month and I've put 40,000 more words in it since then and at this exact moment I am currently working on the last scene of Chapter 4 (out of six total)! I swear it is happening! I've been putting in about a thousand words a day for the past month! It is really happening this time! The sequel is coming! I promise! I know it has been years but it's happening!
See? It's happening! (I would include a screencap of the part that is happening, but all of Chapter 4 is pretty spoilery.)
So that will exist! Someday! I mean that!
And if you're asking about Steve/Tony Star Trek AUs by people other than me, there are some! If you filter the AU - Star Trek Fusion tag by Steve/Tony, there are 25 matches. Several of them are related to my fic (remixes, art) but there is some stuff that isn't my fault! I haven't read a lot of them because I was trying not to read things that seemed like they might be similar to mine while I was plotting my series here, and also I have never finished watching DS9, so I skipped the DS9 ones.
Under Stars by vulcanscully: A fun fusion that I thought was interesting because Steve is an ensign and that's not how this usually goes.
Discovery of the Century by DepressingGreenie: More 616 in flavor than a lot of the Trek AUs, this is basically Finding Steve In The Ice but Make It Star Trek. As far as I am concerned, Finding Steve In The Ice is great every time.
and so we rebuild by raeldaza: I'm probably biased because this one was inspired by my fic, but I also really enjoyed this one for not being how these things usually go. A lot of Trek AUs in many fandoms are written through a TOS/AOS kind of lens and will often do a Kirk/Spock thing and make one of them a Vulcan or half-Vulcan. In this one that's Tony, but also he's a terrible Vulcan! He's found a new way to disappoint his father!
Stellar Love Affairs by AvengersNewB: I honestly had never imagined a Star Trek fusion that was also A/B/O but I think it really works here! It's like bringing pon farr full circle.
Xenophilia by Captain_Panda: Captain_Panda has several Trek AUs but I am reccing this one because it's the longest. And also the whumpiest. Everyone loves some good away-mission whump!
So there you go! Live long and prosper! I promise I am still writing this Star Trek AU sequel!
spock crying in the the motion picture novelization
as i was watching star trek the motion picture today, i found myself wondering how closely it and the book align only to find that the essential scene, the thesis statement of the tmp story, where spock draws a direct parallel between v'ger and himself while crying is simply... not in the book. i know the version that's more widely available now is the director's cut and that said scene wasn't even in the original theatrical release, but the movie is simply incomplete without it. so! i decided to write out the scene as if it were in the book! please enjoy my take on a prose version of spock's beautiful speech
“Spock?” Then, when his Science Officer did not answer, “Mr. Spock.”
Kirk rose from the captain’s chair and made for the console where Spock sat, facing away from him towards the screen that displayed Vejur’s activity.
“I think -" Kirk began.
Then, Spock turned towards him in his chair, hand releasing from its resting place against the thin line of his mouth. He was — crying. A single, shimmering tear was streaking down his left cheek. His eyes, usually so dark and, since his return from Vulcan, so indecipherable, now shone brightly under the dim, warm light of the bridge. His eyebrows crinkled inwards, not in contemplative thought but, and Kirk would have never guessed, worry. It seemed that open, unashamed emotion left over from Spock’s mind meld with the intruder had not yet dissipated, though Kirk was unsure if Spock’s tears were more Vejur’s than his own.
Spock nodded his head, lifting it a little towards his captain, slightly accusatorily. There was no attempt to hide, no apologetic aversion of gaze. It seemed as if he were telling Jim, “Yes, believe what you are seeing, Captain.
“I have returned.”
Kirk felt McCoy step into place at his side, the doctor’s eyes settling on the now multiple tears pooling down Spock’s face. The captain shared a look with McCoy, acknowledging their mutual concern and astonishment towards their friend.
“Not for us,” Kirk finally stated.
“No, Captain. Not for us.” Spock’s voice, if perhaps a little softer than usual, was confident, steady, calm. Certain. “For Vejur.”
Spock raised his hands, intertwining the fingers in a familiar, thoughtful gesture, but kept them suspended in the air, fidgeting.
Commander Decker approached, too, eyebrows furrowing as he took in the image before him. Kirk showed no sign of acknowledging his presence, the captain’s attention entirely focused on his friend.
“I weep for Vejur as I would for a brother," Spock continued. "As I was when I came aboard, so is Vejur now. Empty, incomplete, and searching. Logic and knowledge are not enough.”
Kirk thought back to every argument, every insistent remark Spock made during their initial five-year mission about his lack of emotion, about his fundamental inability to consider anything else but logic and careful reasoning. Were these out of desperation, a need for the humans of the old Enterprise crew to accept his words as fact so that he, too, could cement their validity? Maybe in Spock’s mind, the more times he declared it, the closer it would be to coming true.
“Spock,” McCoy cut in, colliding reality with Kirk’s thoughts and Spock’s poetic words. “Are you saying that you’ve found what you needed, but Vejur hasn’t?” Decker spoke first. “What would Vejur need to fulfill itself?” Spock moved his gaze towards the main screen, just past Kirk’s head in his line of sight. “Each of us, at some time in our lives, turns towards someone: a father, a brother, a god… and asks, ‘Why am I here? What was I meant to be?’” He took in a sharp breath. “Vejur hopes to touch its creator-“ And now, he lifted his gaze, meeting Kirk’s eyes. “To find its answers.”
“‘Is this all that I am?’” said the captain, quoting Spock’s words from their conversation in sickbay. “‘Is there nothing more?’”
