I hope tumblr doesn’t die because No other social media site is as good for long, thoughtful, nuanced analyses of media. Yeah tumblr is also full of dumb shallow hot takes and shitposts, but you can make dumb shallow hot takes and shitposts anywhere —-there are no other popular social media sites that let you easily format and share long essays on the media you enjoy, and then have conversations around those long essays.
Fandom on all the other big social websites just seems so utterly …shallow. And it’s not because people on other websites aren’t thoughtful or don’t have deep things to say, but because these sites’ formats do not allow for any kind of long nuanced conversations.
Tiktok? Things have to be crammed into a super short video with an attention grabbing headline, and you can’t hyperlink sources. Instagram? Everything has to be in an image format with strict limits on length, and nothing will be shown to your followers anyway because of how Instagram’s algorithm works, and also no hyperlinks. Twitter? Strict character limits, and if you split it into threads it means someone can retweet a part of your essay completely out of context, and also very little freedom with formatting.
It frustrates me so much. If I go into the Tumblr Les Mis fandom I’ll find really compelling long essays on the original novel (including essays being written for the ongoing book club) on the story’s historical context, or the parallels between different characters and their narrative foils, or the way the politics were defanged for certain adaptations, or the way Victor Hugo’s personal life and failings affected the novel. But on tiktok I’ll get the same five shallow stale jokes from 2013 over and over, or maybe the same “DID U KNO THAT IN THE MUSICAL JAVERT AND VALJEAN SING THE SAME LEITMOTIF” style of basic Intro To Les Mis 101 For Babies media analysis (which is what Tiktok considers deep media analysis), or stale “LOL JAVERT ACTS GAY” style jokes as if we’re living in the early 2000s and calling a character gay is still a funny punchline. And it’s impossible to have any kind of deeper thoughtful discussions than “DID U KNOW <x Kool Fact>” or “lol <shallow observational joke>” on tiktok because the platform just isn’t built for building niche communities around in depth conversations. it’s built to churn out bland generic content for as wide an audience as possible, which means pointing out a small detail like an Easter egg and calling it “cool” is deep media analysis, because you cant have longer more in depth conversations without alienating people. And I hate it. Bc like, it’s not because there aren’t smart clever thoughtful people on Tiktok— there are—it’s because Tiktok isn’t built for these conversations, and anyone who wants to have them has to really fight against the things the website encourages or prioritizes!
Or like, if I go into the LOTR fandom on Tumblr, I’ll find tons of extremely long analysis and fanfic, and analysis of queer readings of the story. On Instagram people will still shriek in terror if you suggest the characters are gay, and most of the popular lotr posts are stale memes recycled from like 2007. There’s really no room for thoughtful media analysis, and even if you did create it, instagram’s algorithm would make sure no one saw your post anyway.
And everyone’s going to say “the algorithm shows you what you’ve seen before so maybe it’s your fault ~” or whatever but i do look for things I want! I do! “The algorithm” doesn’t know me or what I want or value or care about beyond this meaningless surface level.
The only thing that was worthwhile about these sites was the great visual art people were creating, but now the websites are overwhelmed with meaningless soulless machine-generated AI glurge, and it sucks. It just really, really sucks.
I’m honestly confused about why people don’t use tumblr….There’s no character limits! You have freedom with post formatting, and can insert images throughout textposts to illustrate specific points you’re making beneath the paragraphs where they’re necessary! You can add hyperlinks, linking to your sources! People can reblog your entire essay and share it, and then add on with commentary that then becomes part of a larger conversation! People can find your stuff through the tagging system! Reblogging means posts stay in circulation for years instead of being dead 30 minutes after they’re uploaded! If you want to have genuinely interesting text conversations about a piece of media, there really isn’t a better social media website for it anywhere.
To be clear, I’m definitely not saying Tumblr media analysis is *always* clever and thoughtful or etc etc. there are shitposts and nonsense here too (plenty of which I’ve created lol.) I’m saying that Tumblr gives people the tools for in-depth insightful analysis to happen. Whether people choose to do it or not is their own decision XD. But the reason lengthy in-depth conversations and book clubs are even possible here is because Tumblr is built for allowing these conversations to happen, in a way other sites simply aren’t.
It’d really suck if it died, because it’d be a huge blow to…being able to easily find long insightful in-depth media analysis written by fans. I currently don’t think there’s anything that could replace it.
#tumblr#I’m currently working an overlong essay post#comparing the locations Hugo references in Les Mis#with the photographs taken by Charles Marville in the 1860s of those very places#and just thinking “wow this would be hard on other sites

By now, y’all might be familiar with that poll I posted awhile ago about different actor’s interpretations of a certain line in the Les Mis musical. Well, now I’m gonna talk about it. Hooray!
”Forgive me, sir. I would not dare” is such a fascinating line to me partially because of how it takes the place of an entire series of monologues from a chapter in the novel. For time’s sake, the musical condenses the runaway cart incident, Javert voicing his suspicions about the mayor, and the result of his suspicions into one scene which puts it in a different context. Instead of reporting Madeleine and then gaining information about Valjean’s lookalike as he does in the novel, Javert instead finds himself suspicious of Madeleine despite already knowing that “Jean Valjean” has been recaptured. Surprisingly, this doesn’t significantly change Javert’s motivation for taking such an apologetic tone. In both cases, he chided himself not for being suspicious of the mayor, but for being so in a way that trusted his own feelings more than that of the law. “Forgive me, sir. I would not dare” is not only a fumbled apology, but a testament to how rare it is for him to disregard his superiors. It’s a moment to understand his philosophy pre-Stars. Not only that, but it provides different information than Stars. It shows how the strictness of Javert’s moral code doesn’t only make him seem authoritative, but can also degrade him.
But an apology is not inherently degrading. So why is it in this case? This is where actor interpretation becomes important. The effect comes from the tone, not the words.
I’ve noticed a few different ways actors tend to portray this line. The first involves more of the pleading present in the novel. This interpretation comes across as somewhat panicked, trying to convey a plea for forgiveness and being appalled by his own actions simultaneously. This is beneficial in the way that it can clearly draw the audience’s attention to the difference between this line and the more composed lines surrounding it. Additionally, this particular version of the line tends to split into two subcategories. One is more reserved, contrasted with the previous, more confident lines and effectively communicates abashment. The other is more distressed and makes the apology seems urgent. Both subcategories serve the same purpose though.
The second interpretation is much more even-toned than the first. With this one, Javert maintains his composure and the apology rarely comes across as anything other than the result of a momentary lapse in judgment. This version of Javert tends to prioritize professionalism over any kind of charisma. My opinion of this interpretation varies depending on the actor.
The third interpretation is probably my least favorite. It has little to no sincerity and makes it clear that Javert is still quite suspicious of the mayor, but simply doesn’t want to alarm him. The apology has absolutely none of its original meaning. This interpretation irks me because it takes away an aspect of this character I find very interesting (the fact that Javert is a bootlicker in the most genuine way possible).
Anyway, I’m not sure how to end this. I’m might‘ve not really had a point here, but that’s okay. I just really like this line.

Traduzione e dopo, reazione:
'Like I already said, I did not copy or save those pictures, on account of my very limited technical abilities. I remember the summer picture was included in a bigger batch, together with other photos of the OL cast, like the ones you can still find when you look for S and C or C and T. At that time, we didn't have these fandom wars, like nowadays, and Mr. T was not famous yet. The picture of the party when C was sitting on that gentleman's lap has been shared many times by bloggers and I think the more senior bloggers could still have it or find it. I was just revisiting my memories and I wanted to share. I hope I did not start even more rumors. I know that every time someone says something the first reaction is 'prove it!' and it's only fair. If this post will be criticized, I will understand, but I will not be hurt, because my conscience is clear. Thank you, truly thank you.'
I am now wondering if this mysterious summer pic is not one of the series taken for RDM's birthday party and if memory serves (and I can, of course, be awfully wrong and sure - always correct me, please), it was a whole flurry at the time about S being cut off some pictures. That would mean you have somehow seen a picture that was not very widely circulated. As for the lap pic, still no clue - but many pics of C with many other men (dr. Colbert comes to mind, too) are very affectionate, whereas with McIdiot - flat cardiogram and blink twice if you want us to rescue you.
Maybe one of the veterans could help? At the moment, I feel like looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack and there is nothing more irritating for someone like me (granted, chronically curious - a detail that, remember, got me here, LOL).
I will never blame you for not finding those photos, by the way. I think it was incredibly brave to step out with your handle and own your thoughts and words: it is rare and for this, my dear, I do admire you! And I can only look back, with my historian glasses, this time, and think of all the tiny details that were forever lost with each and every deactivated or erased blog, all those comments and all those tidbits that once kept this community on tenterhooks every single day. Back when this place was lively, and fun and smiling and young and naïve.
A time I never knew. But a story I can relate to and understand maybe as well as our veterans, who lived through the sorrow and puzzlement and are still here, with us. And I feel incredibly honored to see you found this page to be a safe haven. It will always remain so, for all the shippers who will engage with me. You have my word.
Please don't be a stranger. Grazie, grazie mille e un abbraccio per te. Pace e Bene! 😘

Have to - present impersonal verb falloir + infinitive or que + subjunctive (il faut que tu partes - it is necessary that you leave)

Shall/Will - simple future second verb (tu partiras ce soir - you will leave tonight)
Should - present conditional devoir (tu devrais partir - you should leave)
Would - present conditional second verb(j'aimerais partir - I would like to leave)
*this verb typically means being able to: "I can't speak French" would be translated as "I don't speak French" or "I don't know how to speak French", using pouvoir means you are physically unable to do so ie I can't run because my leg is broken.
While auxiliary verbs are the first half of compound tenses and moods, semi-auxiliary verbs are used with another verb left in the present infinitive form to express an influence of their meaning, tense, mood, or aspect - some are the equivalent of modal verbs, others are simply verbs of perception. When not followed by an infinitive verb, those are not considered semi-auxiliary anymore.
Stative verbs (to be, to remain, to feel) express a state rather than an action. They usually relate to thoughts, emotions, relationships, senses, states of being and measurements and cannot be used as the introduction of a gerund (je rentre en marchant but je suis en marchant*).
Impersonal verbs can only be conjugated in the masculine form of the third person singular: il doesn't refer to a person (il pleut - it's raining).

this has been sitting in my drafts for months and i'm finally posting it.
it's adding on from this post about Fantine and sex work in les mis. this post ended up being long and more about sex work than Fantine but it does come around i swear.
the way we discuss Fantine is very important, but why?
the way that we talk about Fantine and sex work in les mis - on tumblr, with our friends, in the brick club chat, in articles and in scholarly analysis - directly correlates with the way we treat modern day sex workers and the struggles we face today. notably, the fight for decriminalisation.
i'd argue that Fantine is the most famous of the "dead sex worker" trope. i'd argue she's one of the most famous fictional sex workers. she was just name dropped in the new mean girls movie. everyone knows the story of Fantine the "Miserable Dead Prostitute".
to many people, the book or musical is their first and often only point of reference for sex work, and informs how they treat real life sex workers. many of us interacting in fandom are or will soon be adults with jobs, you could be a childcare worker or a doctor or therapist or any role that makes you a mandatory reporter. and if you hold biases towards sex workers and your patient or the parent of the kid in your class is one, then what.
(you know i had a therapist tell me once that if i had any kids she would "be forced" to report me to the police for "child abuse" on the grounds of my job. that was discrimination and was illegal as i live in one of the four locations in the world with sex work both decriminalised and a protected attribute under discrimination law, but it still happened.)
how people think informs how they vote, and public opinion in turn impacts legislation that actively damages sex workers and puts them in real danger. (criminalisation, the nordic model, "legalisation" also known as licensing, instead of full decriminalisation).
here is a resource put together by NSWP, the Global Network of Sex Work Projects that covers terminology and legal frameworks. I recommend giving the whole thing a read, but if you just want to learn about the difference between the different legal models I'm talking about read from pages 12-14.
full decriminalisation is the safest best practice option for all sex workers. not the nordic model, not select legalisation, full decriminalisation for all workers including those who aren't "legal" citizens.
bringing this back to Fantine. when i search analysis of sex work/"prostitution" in les mis, this is the shit i find.
link 1 | link 2
i don't even know where to start on rebranding "oldest profession" to "oldest form of oppression" and "trafficked and forced into the industry" - the trafficking conflation is a common one. the majority of labour trafficking occurs in industries completely unrelated to sex work, with sex trafficking numbers being grossly overestimated. there are no true numbers because under criminalisation victim/survivors of sex trafficking can't safely seek help for fear of being criminalised. decriminalisation helps everyone.
I will also say that the trafficking narrative is a racist xenophobic one used to target migrant workers, making them more vulnerable to higher rates of police violence, detention and deportation. if you want to get deeper into this I recommend reading Migrant sex workers and trafficking - Insider research for and by migrant sex workers.
yet here we see the idea that most of (if not all) sex workers are trafficked or forced, a narrative that removes the agency of sex workers and obscures the reality of labour trafficking. in short, lies which serve to sensationalise and erase real lived experiences, provide publicly-sanctioned excuses for the heavy policing of marginalised communities, and helping no one.
i will quickly say here that you'll never meet anyone who fights as hard for sex trafficking survivors than sex workers and sex worker peer led organisations.
and in the second example, you see how even though they're saying sex work, (so they listened enough to know not to say "prostitute" anymore), but they're still sharing anti-sw beliefs like "selling the body/selling yourself", violent phrasing that denies us not only agency but connection to our bodies, autonomy, and consent.
this is something i'll talk about a lot more in the chapter analysis that i'll get around to finishing and posting one day: but fantine doesn't sell her body to sex work any more than she sells it to the textile factory. how is one form of physical labour "selling your body/yourself" and another isn't? at the end of the day, she still owns her body, just like when i leave a booking i still own my body, just like when i clocked out of my past civilian jobs i still owned my body. we sell labour, we sell services. not ourselves.
noting here that even when discussing exploitation and trafficking, phrasing it as "selling your body" is also gross, still removes the survivors agency and connection to their body, and shows that you're not really a safe ally to survivors at all.
these ideas, that i pulled from the first paragraphs of two of the first analyses of fantine i stumbled across, are the same ones that sex workers around the world argue against when lobbying for full decriminalisation. it's the arguments we have with law makers and councils and saviour organisations and our own families and friends.
i'll talk about this more later but look at how anne hathaway finished playing Fantine and then signed off on a letter and petition against full decriminalisation of sex work and advocated for the nordic model - ensuring that sex workers and trafficking victims alike would be more vulnerable to violent clients and policing.
ironically, the same thing Fantine faces.
so my whole roundabout point is it matters. the way we talk about characters like Fantine matter. this directly impacts how real people treat real sex workers. this directly impacts legislation that directly impacts the lives and safety of sex workers AND survivors of sex trafficking.
just in case i haven't said it enough the safest option for both parties is always complete and full decriminalisation btw 🫶🏻

LES MIS LETTERS IN ADAPTATION - Marius Becomes Practical Once More to the Extent of Giving Cosette his Address, LM 4.8.6 (Les Miserables 1972)
Marius resumed:— “Now that I think of it, you ought to know my address: something might happen, one never knows; I live with that friend named Courfeyrac, Rue de la Verrerie, No. 16.” He searched in his pocket, pulled out his penknife, and with the blade he wrote on the plaster of the wall:— “16 Rue de la Verrerie.” In the meantime, Cosette had begun to gaze into his eyes once more. “Tell me your thought, Marius; you have some idea. Tell it to me. Oh! tell me, so that I may pass a pleasant night.” “This is my idea: that it is impossible that God should mean to part us. Wait; expect me the day after to-morrow.” “What shall I do until then?” said Cosette. “You are outside, you go, and come! How happy men are! I shall remain entirely alone! Oh! How sad I shall be! What is it that you are going to do to-morrow evening? tell me.” “I am going to try something.” “Then I will pray to God and I will think of you here, so that you may be successful. I will question you no further, since you do not wish it. You are my master. I shall pass the evening to-morrow in singing that music from Euryanthe that you love, and that you came one evening to listen to, outside my shutters. But day after to-morrow you will come early. I shall expect you at dusk, at nine o’clock precisely, I warn you. Mon Dieu! how sad it is that the days are so long! On the stroke of nine, do you understand, I shall be in the garden.” “And I also.” And without having uttered it, moved by the same thought, impelled by those electric currents which place lovers in continual communication, both being intoxicated with delight even in their sorrow, they fell into each other’s arms, without perceiving that their lips met while their uplifted eyes, overflowing with rapture and full of tears, gazed upon the stars.

ok so i'm thinking more about kim and le retour and like
i think there is a real (and likely) possibility that kim never wholeheartedly embraces communism, even if he becomes favorably disposed to it because of harry.
kim has a tendency towards skepticism and a resistance to ideology (he was a moralist after all)
BUT the thing is, you can fight hard for a cause (and mean it!) even while doubting its means and/or its aims. and it's not like kim is skeptical of everything. he believes in the RCM. what happens when the aims of the RCM change (as is implied by the EDC check with pryce and gottlieb at the end of the game)? does that loyalty disappear?
and, even more importantly, whom do we know without a doubt kim believes in by the end of the game?
harry. he trusts and believes in harry implicitly to the point of death. if harry dives headfirst into le retour, kim is coming with him.
for any holdovers from the les mis fandom: enjolras: "you don't believe in anything." / grantaire: "i believe in you."
maybe that's enough? maybe, in a weird way, this kind of loyalty, this kind of love is also revolutionary? (i'm now thinking of dobreva and abadanaiz....steban says "[abadanaiz] was [dobreva's] partner and stabiliser, the planet who kept her in orbit")
doubt and skepticism are sometimes necessary to keep us from veering off course. this is part of what kim provides for harry. la revacholiere says that harry NEEDS kim to keep her on this earth. they are both imperfect, but they make each other better.
ideological purity is not possible. but love is (in this world and the next).
#le retour#kim kitsuragi#disco elysium#hopefully the les mis reference isn't out of left field lol i just kept thinking about it#harrykim#de meta#de character meta

I get really frustrated at people being like "why didn't they teach this in school" or "I don't know this because they didn't teach this in school", and people, essentially, blaming any knowledge gap on their school system because...most of what I did learn in school...I've forgotten, and a lot of the "important" information I know, or skills I've developed, I have learned outside of school.
Sure, I took English in school, for many years, but I am decently fluent in it today mostly because I've interacted so much with English outside of school. I mean, I have never taken a French class in my life but am still able to understand it, if not communicate in it, fairly well because of language apps, and making a real effort to listen to/read it. I learned some location of countries, some capitals, and some flags in school, but I am pretty good at all of those things because I intermittently addicted to trivia games in these categories. I know a decent amount about 19th century French culture and history because I developed an interest in it post reading Les Mis, not because I learned anything about it in history class, beside maybe a little something about Napoleon. On the other hand, there are lots and lots of things I have written reports about, or written exams about, where I got excellent grades but have absolutely no memory of today.
Some school systems are better than others, sure. But there is not a school system in the world that is capable of teaching its students everything that is worth knowing; let alone having the students actually retain all of that knowledge afterwards. But most of us are fully capable of learning about things on our own if we find it interesting or important enough. And if you are not willing to put in the effort to learn, say, the succession history of England that's fine, (I am personally not willing to put in that particular effort myself), and you definitely do not need an excuse to not know about it. But, if you don't know it, just say you don't know. Don't blame your lack of knowledge on the school system.
#rant tag#(because this is not really personal but it needs a tag#actually as someone who rants a lot I probably already should have had a tag for it)

okay let me organize. this will probably take me to next year but I do want to prioritize what was already on my list
already up there, no matter the quality:
sorceror to the crown
when fox is a thousand
a taste of gold and iron (if I ever get around to it...)
sistersong - need to give this one a shot
snow crash
tress of the emerald sea - my baby brother LOVES this one I must not disappoint new:
anna karenina - my mom likes this one and I'm excited for the drama and writing
don quixote - a parody, I think
the count of monte cristo - I saw the movie! definitely on the list
the bluest eye - I was unable to keep reading this one when I initially started it but I really love morrison's other works so I'm bringing it back now
the metamorphosis - on the list but not available as an audiobook so it could be a while
things fall apart - definitely a priority, but not available as an audiobook
dracula - available but im saving it for halloween. the structure intrigues me. I tried doing the dracula daily but got bored
frankenstein - on the list!
gods of jade and shadow - not considered a classic but I still want to read it, don't want it to be left behind now that I'm in another bout of book-reading
giovvani's room - 14 weeks wait :(
journey to the west - I think I know enough to be able to follow it but maybe an annotated copy would be better
epic of gilgamesh - release an audio version 🥺🥺🥺 pleaseeee
one hundred years of solitude - I do want to read this but I think I will need help
crime and punishment - I tried to read this one when I started college but it was DENSE. lower priority
moby dick - I have friends into this one!
Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See - this looks extremely well-researched and I'm pretty intrigued by the language that's referenced, the one that women use to communicate with each other
The Bonesetter's Daughter by Amy Tan - I like Tan's work, and this one is new to me
The Book of Chuang Tzu - so this is a chinese classic, written in the 4th century. goodrreads claims 'Where the Tao Te Ching is distant and proverbial in style, the Chuang Tze buzzes with life and with insights, often with considerable humour behind them." and if that's true I would love to read it
The Activist's Tao Te Ching: Ancient Advice for a Modern Revolution - I have no way to know how good this book is but the concept definitely interests me. it reminds me of an article about taoism's relationship to anarchism I read years ago. the summary makes me a little nervous tho
I've already read all of austen and the brontes I've wanted to, I read les mis, no interest in little women, I hate oscar wilde on a personal level, I struggle a lot with surrealism so I'm sticking to more conventional structures, I don't have a lot of interest in white 20th-century americana, I consider ishiguro's books to be modern classics with beautiful writing but they make me too sad, hmm why the fuck is call be by your name on this list...I'm interested in Taoism in novels but I haven't found a lot that offer that besides the danmei I've already read (ha) but it sounds like it will be a definite theme in JTTW. another reason to get an annotated copy. all the books I'm finding look like they're written by white academics anyway. I mean there's THE Tao Te Ching but I definitely need that one annotated and I think it would be difficult for me to focus on since it sounds a little dry.
I do want to get into historical texts like jttw it's just a question of how much I'd understand which is why an annotated physical copy is probably the way to go with something like that. like I saw an excerpt of the tale of genji and I was completely lost

I think I mentioned this before in my post a little while ago abt valjean not talking, but reading the barricade section just now & he talks so little. I think the only things he says the entire time is to ask for a gun to shoot down the mattress and to ask for javert & then say he's shot him -- people talk to him plenty but he never replies. and this taken with the fact that it's such a long section without his pov at all it I feel like really shows how much of a sort of. social/communicative wall I guess? he can & does put up sometimes, and how impenetrable & unreadable (& in marius' case disconcerting) it comes across. like even we as readers who know him really well are not getting much from this at all about what he's thinking or feeling or planning, he's incredibly hard to read without that element of internality
#(I'm not counting his interaction w javert in the alley here bc that's another thing)#also i won't talk abt this too kuch bc i need to actually get to this section of the book & not just do analysis from memory but#i really do think this element of not being able to read him at all is part of what freaks marius out abt him a little in that marius is to#begin with not great at reading people & also really sensitive to potential rejection/dislike so when jvj behaves this way around him#& later when he's. what's the phrase it's like 'benevolent & cold' or something i think that's like practically tailor made to make him#(marius i mean) in his own slightly neurotic way extremely nervous Already#which! like We get why valjean is doing this & the whole internal explanation it makes sense & we sympathize!#but it's just such a bad match personality wise for a hm. not entirely a misunderstanding. but you get what i mean#it's predisposed towards misunderstanding & bad communication#<- sorry this is all a complete sidetrack from the post but i was just thinking abt this in the occasional sections we get marius' pov#& his view of jvj#thoughts#les mis

The Confrontation in Les Mis (or Authority Gains Its Power as the chapter is called in the book) is such an interesting scene to me because so many adaptations present it in a way that I can’t decide if it’s wrong or just strange. Various adaptations add an element of physical aggression to it that is not present in the original scene. Essentially my problem with that is that I find it unnecessary. Exactly what any violence could communicate in this scene could easily be communicated without it. More specifically, it could be communicated more artfully without violence.
What’s intriguing about this scene is the power dynamic between Valjean and Javert and how it shifts throughout. It starts with Javert in complete control, not because he could physically overpower Valjean (which he couldn’t), but because he has the law on his side. It is fully within his rights to arrest a lawbreaker. He mostly maintains this control of the scene through the authority given to him by the government. But when control briefly shifts to Valjean, it isn’t gained through actual violence. True, he threatens Javert, but that’s the extent of it. We know he’s been able to fend off Javert because he is able to give himself a moment to address Fantine. Nothing else was required to communicate this. Additionally, a threat of violence from Valjean is intimidating enough on it’s own partially because he uses this tactic so sparingly.
Portrayals of violence in media have a very straightforward purpose, to show how an attacker gains power of someone else, even if that power is short lived. But that power is represented very plainly by physical strength, meaning that it doesn’t always effectively portray other implications and nuances of a situation. But whether this is the case for violence in Les Mis or not, I mostly don’t like it for its lack of subtlety. It often feels like action for the sake of action rather than because it would genuinely portray the themes of power and authority better. It ups the stakes to some extent, but not in a way that’s especially meaningful. The stakes of the scene were already high enough, in my opinion.
I’m gonna see if I can sum this is up succinctly. If you ask me, when a scene already effectively deals with themes of power, there is no reason to add an element that involves those themes but only in a more visceral and frustratingly straightforward way.
#I certainly don’t dislike violence in media in general#but I prefer that it be well utilized for narrative reasons rather than dramatic effect#les mis#les miserables#the confrontation#rambling#I really hope this makes sense#I might do another post about how the lack of real violence in this scene relates to the characters

how do you feel about writing pregnancy, pregnant reader or parent situations
like x character finds out his significant other is pregnant
or
x character as a parent
Okay, so I'm making this as an adopted kid or a kid you took in, Since I don't do pregnant anything but I couldn't help making Rafa a father figure.
Rafa as a parent figure
Okay so Rafael as a parent figure could go horribly wrong and at the same time extremely right
I'm sorry to say but it would be like having two kids, just one of them has adult money to do whatever they please.
When you first were left with a kid at the door of your house in the middle of the night, you thought it was a trap. Someone has to be playing a trick on you, right?
Nop, you waited...and waited...and waited. And no one came back for him so sooner or later you realized this kid was now yours.
Well, you wanted to give it to the police, take it anywhere but here since the house of a drug dealer, and we'll know narco could not be the place for a kid to grow up in right?
But you bet Rafa was not going to let that happen. "Amor que haces despierta tan tar-" He looked at you then at the little boy sitting on your couch and back at you. You could see the man's poor brain going into overdrive trying to understand "....de quien es el chamaco...?"
Saying he was confused was an understatment, listen the man was tired. He wanted you back in bed and he needed sleep but when you told him they had left him at the front door, and you were planning to take him to the Police station. He gave the boy one look, and his heart was breaking, he couldn't do that I mean look at the kid!!
"No,no que chingaderas dices Amor es muy tarde y miralo!"
"Rafa que le miro, es un niño que no es nuestro y probablemente se perdio" silence. then he looks at the little boy he had picked up into his arms and turns to you "Pero se parece a mi no?" There he went with that stupid smile of his "Podría ser mi hijo, que tal si es mi hijo perdido?" He tried to joke but to no amusement on your part.
You only shook your head in disapproval making your way back upstairs, knowing that rafa would follow behind you and try to negotiate with you and sure enough he did. "Andale amor, le podemos decir...Roberto no?" And behind you, you could hear him talking to the kid in what you like to call his paternal voice "Si? Te quieres llamar Roberto?"
And so the staying up late, and teaching Rafa that no a toddler does not want alcohol when they cry they want milk, and no! You can't give the baby drugs, and no he cannot take after your work when he grows up! Yeah basically your days of teaching Rafael how to be a father figure started
And well it's been three years now and the kid and Rafa are, inseparable, that isn't to say yall didn't suffer problems. for the first few years, there were a lot of arguments on whether Rafael could even take care of a living thing which was proved wrong when you told him to take care of your plant for a week and it died but his excuse was that "Plants don't communicate or cry" oh right crying.
The Crying.
The one thing you could not stand and that made Rafael's murder tendencies absolute. This little boy could not cry because he was immediately being carried, fed, and changed, and he was pointing the gun at the last person who was with the baby. Because if one thing would not happen under Rafaels watch was anyone and I mean anyone hurting his little boy, or as he liked to call him "his legacy"
Best to say that after the boy came, Rafael worked even harder so the kid could be spoiled rotten. And at some point, you concluded that you won't be getting rid of him any time soon, well not that you mind anymore. Anytime the house is quiet you can't seem to be at ease anymore, fair to say the little guy squeezed his way into both of your hearts. And hey maybe it's not so bad, after all who wouldn't want a family to call their own?
Wanna be added to my tag list? Comment and let me know
