Man get ready for yet another loooong post of my thought process on those particular pieces (I might be repeating myself because I've explained this in the past I think? But I am always happy to talk about my hcs)-

So, first of all, this all derives from me being a strong believer in the "ralsei is kris' old headband" theory and all that implies.

Based on that theory, I am assuming that Ralsei is a manifestation of what Kris might have wanted to be like when they were very young (a goat monster that fits with their family and is someone that everyone likes because they're Super Nice).

But Kris moved way past that when we start deltarune, and because of the way they don't seem to especially like ralsei or how we get the general idea that they're quite the troublemaker, I read that as "They became disillusioned with the idea of what they wanted to be when they were younger, and thus, would dislike seeing that in someone else"

Therefore, Kris doesn't like Ralsei that much (ehem BUT I DIDN'T SAY HATE! I genuinely think they're at a basic friendship level for now, but they don't have a bond as strong as Kris and Susie have, u feel?)

So for that reason, for me kralsei as it is right now is quite one sided! It's super obvious Ralsei has feelings for Kris, or at least he has a huge favoritism for them. (I like that about it because I am a sucker for angst and yearning, but allow me to elaborate further!)

So- Here comes The Player. We get many options throughout the game to hug Ralsei and generally be super nice and sweet to him, because of course WE would love the fluffy boy right? (How can you not love him????!!!!)

...But Kris just doesn't like him as much as we do. The strongest proof of this is that the only person they want to take to the festival is Susie. They are confused when we make them say that they'd like to take Ralsei to the fest. So that's just a canon fact, Ralsei likes Kris very very much but it's just not reciprocated.

So we all know how Ralsei is kinda weird in that "he knows a bit too much, and he seems like he is hiding something" way right?

Part "he knows exactly why Kris doesn't like him (ehem, discarded headband)", part "hiding he knows about the player control" I think Ralsei is in a difficult position.

He wants to be loved by Kris, but... (Well this part is fuzzy for me because we JUST aren't privy to Ralsei's true intentions as of now)

Is he loyal to the player because he is forced in some way to play a role in the narrative of deltarune?

Or

Even while being forced to play a role in the story, he still wants to help Kris because he loves them?

We don't know! Either way, you can see why "Kris doesn't like me" is a problem for him. It either means that he's failing at his role, or that his true feelings aren't attainable. It's the sort of thing that might drive a Darkner to madness :)

Some old deltarune chapter 3 predictions copied from my other tablet. Some of these are extremely cringe/incoherent but I'm just putting it as it was written.

All of this is Deltarune ch. 3 shit, and mostly Mike because haha funni tv man <3 idk if he even exists but I love him

-Bit where Mike swears but it's blocked off by a little censor bar, if you edit the files to look under it, there's a small sprite of a dog

-Rouxls sneaks into your inventory, (Lancer probably too)

You check your light world inventory and it says smthin about the cards, and then "and the rules card… Somehow?"

-He kinda becomes a co-host on whatever shows Mike is hosting, but Mike gets mad at him because of the stupid accent thing and just tells him to shut up

-Rouxls in a suit??? I'd die

As for the shows that'd happen

-Cooking show, I mean, come on

-Oh my god, baking contest where Kris, Ralsei and Susie all make a cake, you get to make the cake yourself while the others are off-screen

-Ralsei's is perfect, of course

-Susie ate the ingredients and severely fucked up the kitchen

-Kris… Well it depends on how you do, but I'd imagine it'd be funny if you screw up

-Nobody loses though, Mike does the Mettaton thing and makes up some bullshit for how everyone did great

-Commercial breaks, possibly where you fight random enemies, or you go backstage and try to fuck shit up without Mike noticing

-Talent show somewhere in all this, Susie continues to destroy shit

-Susie is handed a microphone, proceeds to bite it without hesitation. Terrible mic screech sound plays, awkward silence, then the crowd cheers

-Microphones taste bad

-Obviously a game show happens, but that's the main bit

-News segment like the Mettaton bit in Undertale because of course

-The return of the tile puzzle except real this time

-???

-Plenty of similarities to the Mettaton section of Undertale (PLEASE)

-Wait what if Toriel is there and the crowd absolutely loves her

-Also what if Undyne destroys shit (But what about Susie? Maybe they join forces to cause problems)

-Something something "grand finale" and you fight Mike

-No clue what the secret boss would be, I mean, Toby always makes up some wacky shit (and it's always amazing)

-Absolute sillyness happens because Deltarune

-After the chapter, when you bring Mike to castle town, he ends up making a scene (of course he does) by arguing with Queen

(Mike is upset that television is slowly being replaced by the Internet, Queen is a smug bitch because of course she is)

-One of them says something to imply they've met before, Susie says some stuff in small text like "They know eachother???"

Ok this is based on a whole scene I made up in my head but what if Mike goes off about how TV hasn't hurt as many people as the internet, and Queen actually gets a bit sad.

Mike kinda regrets saying what he did, and he says something like "Hey, nobody's perfect! We've all got our problems""

And then Queen's like "Well, You're Right About One Thing…"

"You Definitely Have Problems"

And then she laughs lmao

They hate eachother so much but in a weird rivalry kind of way, where they secretly don't actually hate eachother that much, if that makes any sense (Hint: It Doesn't)

Rouxls’s new dialogue in the update is hilarious, & has absolutely slaughtered me

So Deltarune just got an update that added/fixed a lot of things, one such thing that was added is dialogue for if you beat Rouxls violently And it’s fricking hilarious

Rouxls saying “Crappeth” with capitalisation isn’t something I knew I wanted in life but I’m glad it happened But that’s not even the best part

This is pretty funny too, but then Rouxls just:

Rouxls using term on Ralsei just, caught me completely off guard FIRST SPAMTON WITH [Hochi Mama] and [Side Chick] on Noelle BUT NOW ROUXLS WITH FUCKIN’ BIMBO ON RALSEI THAT IS NOT SOMETHING I EXPECTED TO SEE BUT I’M KINDA ALL FOR IT XD But what if I told you, this scene gets even better/funnier?

It was originally just a term along the same lines as “chap” or “little child”, very innocent compared to later definitions of the word

So, if Rouxls is only aware of this/the oldest definition of the word, it means that it’s very likely that Rouxls 100% used the term to seem very old-fashioned but then accidentally went for (comparatively) a lot more of a modern (and scandalous) term than he probably thought Rouxls calling Ralsei a Bimbo is already pretty funny, but if Rouxls meant to only call him something along the lines of “little child” using an old fashioned word, but unintentionally ended up calling him “unintelligent, naive or brutish”, or possibly even “attractive or sexualized" after using a word with much more modern connotations than he thought, makes this scene even more comical than it already was Holy shit, Toby Fox is making me die of laughter over here, I hecking can’t, he can’t keep getting away with this but he will and I’m all for it XD

the puzzles in this chapter were genuinely really impressive! i especially loved the word search puzzles and the ice-ee undertale word search reference💙

that being said. the mouse puzzles were SO fucking infuriating. i caused poor noelle a LOT of grief with those and i feel bad.

SPEAKING OF NOELLE!! the scene where she and kris are walking through the puzzle, the one that spells "december", and she's talking about when they were kids, how she loved sneaking out? beautiful. the cinnamon tography <3 also i guessed dess's full name was december a while ago and while i guess it was obvious, it's nice to have that confirmed!

also, i love that susie and ralsei are real friends in this chapter! he taught her a healing spell!!

I haven’t been super active on this blog because frankly I have like, three? looong analysis/theorycrafting posts I’ve been putting off working on and it fills me with shame to log in and see them waiting in my drafts.

But.

With the release of Deltarune Chapter 2, I wanted to talk kinda in general about how I thought it could impact the fandom’s perception of Everybody’s Favorite Demon Baby, and also point out something in specific about the Weird Route that might connect back to Undertale.

Putting it under the cut to avoid spoilers and long-winded ramblings for the unwilling. Includes spoilers for the Weird Route.

(NOTE: may update later if I notice more things for to put in section II. I’d like to make a full list of parallels if I can tidy them up.)

I. Pre- vs Post-Release Thoughts (you can skip down to II if you don’t care, it is genuinely Long and Pointless)

Okay, so first off. I got SO worried like, the day before the new chapter dropped? It hit me that whatever new stuff we got out of this, people would connect back to Undertale, and. Honestly, I really do hate connecting everything back to Chara, because I do think of Kris as their own character and I really like them and don’t want to ignore everything they got going on. But, I am first and foremost a shameless Chara stan and they’re very important to me, so I kinda... did spend a few minutes reeling from all the new DR stuff as its own stuff, and then immediately started thinking about how this would reflect back on Chara in Undertale lol.

But that’s ok for me to do here because this is my All Chara, Only Chara, All The Time blog, so I am gonna only really talk about Deltarune here to talk about them lol.

So yeah, I started getting anxious beforehand worrying about how everyone would take any and all implications and apply it to mean “aha, Chara IS evil!” The fakeout with the pie reveal in the anniversary stream was a big relief, but I still got worried leading up to the release about what could be in it.

Because part of why I’ve always thought that “Chara was genuinely evil from the start” and even “ok maybe not TOTALLY evil, but Chara was still a kinda bad person” were unlikely was, even if you throw out all the other popular Chara-sympathetic theories. To me, both these takes just seemed too below TF’s talent and the way he wrote all his other characters with depth and love; a Chara like the one these theories propose just doesn’t belong in a world created by TF, and the way the Dreemurrs talk about them overall, the way TF made a point of having Chara say they were guided and repeatedly, correctly blame you the player for the destruction in Kill-All, I was sure that he never intended them to ever be as bad as the fandom sometimes tried to make them out to be.

... Like, mostly sure. Like, 80% sure? Because he never ever talks about them, so it’s impossible say for sure, and it is still theoretically possible that “Chara was and is bad” was the cold-ass take he’d intended all along. So yeah, leading up to the release, I started getting antsy that whatever new lore came out of it, either he’d directly confirm “Chara was a villain?” “*cocks gun* Always has been” or there’d be something that’d at least heavily implicate them, or could be twisted to implicate them, as a negative force. More ammo to be used against them in the Chara Debate Circles would be a drag, and outright confirmation of them as a villain would honestly break my heart and I’d be forced to disown Toby Fox, My Beloved Cool Dad.

And, right now? Tell the truth, I’m SO relieved and I am SO happy. And not just because of how much depth and characterization it seems Kris is getting! (imo, because rn I just headcanon them as an unhappy teen desperately trying to keep their new friends going on adventures with them and trying to fight back against the player’s control)

I love how this chapter seems to be TF doing course-correcting based on fandom interpretations. Because Kris just isn’t evil, even if they are a knife teen, even if they are the Knight, they’re just NOT evil and that’s canon, baybeeee; it’s made clear in this chapter and the previous one that they love their family even outside of the player’s control, they care about their new friends even outside of the player’s control, they’re established as a weird creepy kid but no one sees them as scary or evil, they’re just Kris, and even in the Weird Route, TF made a point of hammering in the differences between Kris and the player in the Weird Route: Susie and Ralsei notice how distressed Kris seemed after you have Noelle ice Berdly, Noelle heard a voice that she said wasn’t Kris telling her to kill, and the FUCKING Spamton fight: “Kris called for help... but nobody came” again and again, and then “You whispered Noelle’s name”... you, not Kris.

I know TF has never commented much on fans’ perceptions of Frisk and Chara, or who exactly is pulling strings in different routes. But after all this, and especially after seeing all the little winks and nods to fandom jokes in this chapter (what comes to mind: pulling everyone’s leg by seeming to have Kris attack Toriel with a knife only to reveal that pie theory was right, Susie not liking Ralsei’s real face as much as his shadowed one, Ralsei with a gun getting referenced with the ad, Kris getting a joke fixation with knives after the fans made Chara and Kris have knife obsessions as a joke), and seeing what looks like him try to correct some things (what stuck out to me was doubling down on showing that Kris is loved and valued in their family: lots of fans came away from Chapter 1 thinking that Kris was not valued as much as Asriel, but here we see that Toriel is supportive of Kris’ friendship with Susie, and it’s stated that Asriel is the one who used the crappy controller, not Kris) -

I think while he hasn’t commented directly, while he admitted to being overwhelmed by Undertale’s success, while he tends to be pretty tight-lipped about the lore (whether that’s because it’ll be addressed by future chapters or because he prefers to let fans sleuth it out), this chapter convinced me that Toby does keep tabs on fan reactions in Deltarune, so he probably does with Undertale too and would know about all The Discourse surrounding Little Mx Pink Cheeks (and in turn, popular theories like Narrator Chara... Toby if you integrate Narrator Chara into Deltarune being a borderline creepypasta and have the narrator start talking directly to the characters or to the player or the characters start talking to the narrator I will lose my damn B E A N S).

(Kris and Chara not being demonized and the narrator interacting directly with the characters were the only two things on my wishlist going in, I was fine with literally anything else happening lmao)

I even kinda think he’s going out of his way to separate Kris and the player because we didn’t get it before with Undertale, we still insisted that Frisk or Chara was the one doing it, and he’s even using Kris to show that even if this kid can be scary, maybe even mean, and maybe they’re even the Knight (with their reasons unknown), they’re still not a bad kid, they’re still funny and likable, and they still genuinely love their family and friends - which falls in line with Undertale’s cast of complex but likable people who can be antagonists and make mistakes but still aren’t truly bad people, and imo is a direct response to some people fixating on the idea that Chara was always evil because they seem scary/complicated.

... Which is a long way to say that I came out of Deltarune with my confidence fully restored about TF’s intentions with Chara and Kris. Even if he never comments on Chara directly, now I really don’t think TF thinks they’re evil or ever intended for them to be. Deltarune convinced me more than ever that Chara is meant to be complex, yes, and able to be influenced to do horrible things, but they were never intended to be as malicious or shallow as some fans insist.

TLDR:

Toby Fox read your mean fanfiction where Chara is a bad abusive serial killer no one likes, and he made Deltarune in revenge.

... Hm? Ah, you’d like me to get to the point! Right this way!

II. Undertale, Deltarune, and The Point

While no doubt some will still take the voice Noelle hears to be Chara influencing her to turn her into a murderer (I haven’t gone looking for it yet, but I’m sure it’s already a thing because I know this fandom), since it’s made too clear by the game that they can’t blame Kris for this one, I think at this point that’s just being too stubborn to consider other ideas.

If you believe in the totally made up idea used in so many fanfics that Chara is an evil spirit trying to whisper in Frisk’s ear to kill everyone, literally (for some reason) the embodiment of raising stats, and gets more control over people who have increased LV to take over their body... sure. Could be them, they did talk about moving on to the next world and all. I mean, that wouldn’t really make sense because it’s literally never implied in the actual game that Chara encourages you to kill outside of the Kill-All Run or even wants you to, certainly not as the narrator and we get no hint of them doing this as an unseen, unheard third-party either.

Not to mention they’re NOT literally possessing you because of increased LV; they don’t control you even with high LV in any Undertale route other than arguably the Kill-All, and if you fail the Kill-All and it turns into a high-body count Neutral, Chara suddenly stops using first-person narration and showing up in mirrors entirely even though they were showing themself before, the LV remains the same or even can get raised as high as LV 19, nor do they suddenly take over in any other Neutral runs. We can speculate on why (personally, I’d place this either on Chara’s mindset, such as them sinking into shock from the trauma or becoming more assertive as the player feeds their megalomania, or as a sign of Frisk’s withdrawal, leaving Chara alone in the body to take the reins and act out the player’s orders), but canonically, no, Chara does not take over due to high stats.

In fact, there’s even more evidence against this. First-person narration also exists for fleeing your battles in Undertale, even on Pacifist runs with base stats, 0 EXP, and an LV of 1. Since Chara is established to use first-person narration to refer to themself, is the only one who canonically does so, and is confirmed to be present even in all runs through their name and memories always showing up, it seems pretty likely that Chara can take control to flee battle. That means an increase in stats is not a sign of their presence or control, in Undertale or Deltarune.

The most damning blow to the idea that Chara is the voice corrupting Noelle are the lines in the fight with Spamton I mentioned. Kris called for help, but nobody came. You whispered Noelle’s name. Well hold on. If that’s Chara, shouldn’t it be “I whispered Noelle’s name”? As soon as you’ve officially started the Kill-All in Undertale, Chara starts up their “It’s me, Chara” schtick right away, right there in Toriel’s home in the first area, and if they weren’t the narrator before, they’re beginning to speak through the narration now. If the voice was Chara, surely Toby Fox knows it’d be a way bigger “oh shit” moment if the creepy scary hidden route once again switched into first-person, scaring us the same way he did before when we first saw “It’s me, Chara” and knew something was wrong; unfairly or not, their reputation as a villain is still well established and hinting to Chara’s presence with a simple “I” would drive the menace even further, if he intended for them to simply be a demon that possesses player characters when you grind enough. But it’s still just you. The player.

The Weird Route does even more to help Chara’s case than that. Not only is it made pretty clear that Kris and the player are separate, and the player is the one responsible for corrupting Noelle and making her kill... consider how similar Noelle and Chara are, in the Weird Route and the Kill-All Route.

This “voice” that “guides” them in growing strong, compelling them to kill everyone in order to fight for them, eventually driving them to murder people they know. Chara calls themself “the demon that comes when people call its name”, and you whisper Noelle’s name to have her appear to kill Spamton. Noelle’s conflicting emotions towards Kris and the voice as she is manipulated, as she becomes more violent and sadistic, as she goes into shock; does that not sound like Chara, who flipflops between holding you dear as their partner and wanting to move on to the next world together, to be together forever, and them being disgusted by your refusal to accept consequences and the perverse enjoyment you get in killing everyone again and again? Chara, who clings to their quirky narration for much of the Kill-All, but keeps slipping up, who becomes terrifyingly cold, aggressive, power-hungry, and even sadistic, yet still calls Undyne “the heroine”, still seems to still care about their locket, still has moments where they seem to falter?

Noelle does put up significantly more resistance to the voice’s commands than Chara does, and at least much more visibly shows distress and trauma. I don’t think this is a black mark on Chara’s chara-cter either, or an indication of them being more violent or cruel.

For one, while Noelle is still herself with her own soul, it is heavily implied by Chara, Flowey, and Undertale’s lore that Chara was reincarnated without their own soul, at best perhaps attached to Frisk’s (or yours): as I speculate in one of my currently unfinished theories, while monster souls are made up of love, compassion, and hope and thus Asriel was reincarnated without these qualities, it could well be that human souls are correspondingly made up of their own multiple traits, namely determination, patience, bravery, integrity, perseverance, kindness, and justice; if true, a soulless Chara would be lacking these qualities, which would make them less equipped to resist the player’s commands or to feel as torn up about it.

Also, the player has a hold on them both as “party members” to the player’s vessels, but it is also possible that the player naming Chara and having them directly attached to Frisk also gives them a stronger connection to Chara they can abuse, similar to how Kris and Frisk (as the player’s direct vessels) have much less autonomy than Kris’ party members.

(Fun observation: We know that when the thing controlling Kris forced Noelle into becoming a killer and using her to kill Berdly, Kris was horrified and shaken-up according to Susie and Ralsei. How do you think Frisk felt watching Chara be used to slaughter the Underground and then erasing the world when they’re totally corrupted?)

And lastly... look, Noelle and Chara are both minors, but Chara is significantly younger - a small child compared to Noelle’s teen. I know it’s fiction and strong wills and determination and anime is real and all, but a traumatized young child who died two violent and awful deaths back-to-back, may have literally experienced being a corpse in their own coffin/grave for who knows how long, and then came back ”confused” only to immediately start hearing a voice relentlessly commanding them to kill everyone?? I can absolutely see a traumatized kid shutting down and just going with it out of fear at first, before the LV sets in.

TLDR:

What you do to Noelle in the Weird Route is the same fucking thing you do to Chara in the Kill-All Route.

How does one get a recap? How old is this blog?

The blog has been going all of 2021, It started January.

A lot has happened. It feels like a lot more time then it sounds like.. here's a link to one of the first posts, if that helps.

Here goes my best recap, it's probably gonna be missing a few things, but that's why I recommend you scroll down and look for yourself..

At first it was a typical, only posts when gets asks (witch didn't because it had no followers) and answers with bad art kinda thing. There was no plot. Until people figured out they could control Kris. They made Kris go look for Susie, found Susie, and talked to her. (I think they also tried to stab her at one point).

Then they went back home and went to bed. Kris had a bad dream, woke up, did some soul yeeting, and then it was morning. We discover that someone new moved in, and go check that out. They meet a kid named Seeker. Then it's breaking into the school to get into the dark world cuz screw Seeker. We meet up with Ralsei, go to card castle (Lancer is having a party), and get attacked by some dragon thing. After defeating the dragon, they learn that it was actually Jockington all along. Someone turned him into a dragon but he's fine now. Then everything goes to crap when people make Kris attack Ralsei but Ralsei just puts them to sleep. We wake up at Ralsei's castle and are vibin. Before Kris wakes up though, they learn about some weird Lightner and Darkner hybrids called the people of the dawn. But Jockington remembers he was with Catti and we are now going to find her. We fight Catti dragon and Kris, Jockington and Catti go home. We get there and it's back to sleep 4 Kris. They have a super wack dream and wake up again. But what? They're blue now. But only their cheeks. We learn that it's harmless and go back to sleep.

Day three wake up and oh no school time. We yeet off to school and are chilling when Seeker comes in again. But nobody cares so school just starts and everything is normal. But Seeker goes to the bathroom and you are weird so you make Kris follow him. In the halls there's no Seeker, but Kris is turning blue again. Somethings weird out the window so we look at that and suddenly Susie is here too. Kris gets sent back to class while Susie stays to look out the window. Outside there is a fox guy in a scary hood talking to a cloud with eyes. They mention something about distraction creatures and a lizard lady. We assume the creatures are the people turning into dragons, and the cloud with eyes is Seeker. They also named the spooky fox man 'Star fox'. Susie goes back to class and we wait for a chance to yeet to the dark world. That chance is now and there we go down the closet again. But in the dark world Kris is too blue and can't be in the dark world for a bit. So they leave and try to fix Kris cuz who wants to wait for them to fix themselves?? Father alvin fixes Kris and they dark world again. Everyone is bored so they go to visit the murder clown (Jevil). Nothing really happens until the end when you make Kris open the door even when the rest of the gang has decided not to. Good thing Susie has a brain! She dragged Kris back up the elevator. Then it's the making Kris stab the fun gang again, but Ralsei saves the day and makes them sleep. So back at Ralsei's castle, Kris wakes up and them and Susie are gonna leave when someone makes Kris do something and they get pissed. Soul yeeting commences and they lock you in a jar. Ralsei and Kris leave you all alone while they go interigate Seam. Of course you break out and chaos happens. But the two get back and eventually you make it back into Kris. We leave the dark world and run home. Time to sleep, but ooo weird dreams again. This time some people with way to much time on their hands decodes the weird stuff and now we can talk to some weird guy who just showed up. He says he's trying to help Kris, and we know he knows Star fox. The dream ends at a very convenient place.

Day four wake up school again. We are here.

considering just how long ralsei was left waiting in castletown, it’s maybe not so surprising that the area became so heavily imbued with his magic. this effect was only amplified by the near by presence of the dark fountain, and the prince’s family ties to said shadowy geyser. ralsei’s castle has become somewhat of a extension of himself, and it definitely shows, both magically and otherwise/in spirit, so! tl;dr, under the cut will be hcs related to the castle itself, the goings on inside, etc etc.

>to start this out i wanna explain a lil more abt how his soul magic/‘imagination’ magic works. basically, as i mentioned in this hc, ralsei’s soul magic isn’t like he can just, think of s/t crazy, and make it happen. it’s more a passive thing, powered by his own belief/hope/wonder he finds in the world around him. >and, bc ralsei doesn’t. realize that he’s the one affecting/creating these things, there is a sense of randomness to the castle. he never knows what to expect, but he doesn’t consider that a bad thing, he finds enjoyment in the thrill of adventure, after all! and, tbh; thats kinda why its Like That™ in the 1st place? it’s a subconscious attempt @ staving off the effects of prolong -ed isolation, a makeshift fix for an abandoned childs boredom/loneliness. >(this is also why hes able to find his way around the castle with ease despite it’s mixed up nature.)

>the castle seems impossibly bigger on the inside, ofc the outer shell is a looming figure in of itself, bc, well. it’s a castle. however the point still stands, bc the inside almost seems never-ending, and ever-changing, at that, bc… >his magic changes a lot the castle’s interior itself, randomly creating new, strange rooms to explore, most of which don’t even seem possible. these rooms vary in size, from smaller, more cramped spaces, to places bigger then a football field, the contents inside can be anything, rlly!–

>from a dark forest that honest to god makes you feel like you’re outside, though you know you can’t possibly be. w/ fanged plants and pretty crystals twinkling much like fairy lights, w/ tree swings that hang impossibly from above. >to a room completely made out of patchwork and knitted yarn, w/ weird art stuffs and childish looking statues, and a small pond made of water colors, the rocks/lily pads to jump across are instead, large colorful buttons.

>there’s more minor oddities too, such as: staircases that don’t make sense/seem to move every so often, meaning sometimes you end up upside down or walking down sideways on a wall.   >new doors and hallways that definitely didn’t exist a moment before/pop up out of nowhere, a number of secret passages and tunnels to use as shortcuts. >random puzzle areas and maze-like sections scatter -ed around the place, similar to the ruins in UT, etc etc!

>another layer of the what/how @ his castle, is the fact the general vibe of the place is also effected heavily by rals’ own mental/emotional state. >meaning, say he’s having a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, the place will. be a lot less lively then usual, not as bright/with colors dulled, colder somehow, etc etc. >and, if the opposite is true, if he’s instead, doing alright/feeling happy/excited, the castle be as it normally is, lively and colorful and forever in motion, filled with song/general goings on, warm in that homey/cozy sorta way, etc etc. >there’s ofc, lots of states inbetween, but! y'get the idea.

>tho, there’s some things that aren’t so magically inclined, like how a lot of the castle runs on a series of weird rube goldberg type machines, built by ralsei himself. bc. even w/ all the free time in the world, upkeep for an entire magical castle + the dark fountain itself is a lot for just one (1) lil prince! >so, hes went and automated a lot of the more repetitive work to help lighten the load. while they’re kinda arts and crafts looking, lots of popsicle sticks and glitter glue; they’re still surprisingly complicated and generally pretty reliable.

>as well, any rooms usually left untouched by the daily magical shifts (certain hallways, the main entrance, rals’ room, the library, the kitchen, etc etc) are us -ually covered in other cutesy decorations, glitter/confetti and stickers, etc etc. >some of the inanimate objects in ralsei’s castle are ‘alive’ albeit in a subdued sense, they’re able to move/react, mostly. empty suits of knights armor, stuff in the kitchen, statues, paintings, bookcases, clocks, doors. not everything in the castle, of course. but again, y’get the idea, i think!

>all this aside tho, the v highest floors and parts of the roof of the castle are burnt from the knight’s attack, and so those floors are the few areas not messed w/ in any way. >which is partly bc he doesn’t wanna be up there, considering; oof, but also bc its where the dark fountain is situated. anything below those top floors is game, tho.

>so, yeah! 2 wrap this up: ralsei, ofc, has some seriously bad memories tied to his castle, and thats. rlly part of the reason his magic has settled so heavily into its bricks, tbh. he doesn’t want castle town to be something he fears, or something he solely associates with those bad events. it was his + his families home, and he still considers it such, even after everything. >he doesn’t want it to be something that just. makes him sad™, so all the stuff w/ the castle, the ever changing layout, how it became a home to the strange creatures that fill the halls, the childish display of candy colors and clashing designs, is basically just. a type of stubbornity?

>tl;dr it’s him looking at the ruins of a castle he no longer knew, and digging his heels in, making it so it’s not just another thing the knight took from him, etc etc.

Chapter 2 KNOCK OUT!

Susie took a seat across from Spamton who was looking around a lot, he hadn't been in a good Cafe in a hot minute, Spamton was talkative. Susie tried to ignore his glitching, it didn't help that Spamton seemed to just talk so goddamn fast...

When the food arrived Susie took the sandwich Spamton ordered and shoved it into his mouth before speaking "you ever shut up? You know you don't have to talk so fast and about so much crap at once it's annoying as fuck... You act like I'm gonna leave soon" susie admitted

Spamton froze looking up at susie before taking his sandwich out of his mouth "OH..." Spamton muttered, he was talking a lot? And fast... He honestly didn't even know what he was talking about he just said "MY APOLOGIES MY [SINCERE CUSTOMER] I... HAVEN'T TALKED TO ANYONE IN A LONG TIME" Spamton admitted

Susie gave off a "Tsk" before laying back in her chair "No shit! Heh i won't judge too hard, ralsei was the same way the first time we were by ourselves to chat, heh now you can both talk each other's ears off instead of mine for once.." susie explained pulling out some chalk and eating it

Spamton stared at the chalk, he was about to ask why susie was eating it but susie quickly stopped him as soon as he opened his mouth."You can't have any!" susie said growling a little 

".... I WAS GONNA ASK WHY YOU'RE [EATING A  DELICIOUS] [WACK- Y-] " Spamton admitted stopping himself from glitching out again 

Susie blinked "oh... Honestly It's the only thing that makes me feel full here... You good there? you keep glitching out, this a normal thing in the dark world or some shit?" susie asked raising an eyebrow as she crossed her legs on the table 

Spamton wanted to lie and say he was never better but with this purple ~hochi mama~ he felt like he might get a death stare or a lot worse 

" no, NO, nO, No-" Spamton glitched out making it sound like he had 4 different voices speaking for him again. Susie slapped his back this time, Spamton took a deep breath "thank you.." he said this time actually sounding somewhat normal. Susie was almost surprised hearing what sounded like a actually voice talking to her this time 

"so.... What exactly happened then?" she asked 

Spamton hesitated but spoke up "WHEN I BECOME A [BIG SHOT] THINGS BECOME [ REDACTED] AND WHEN I WAS THROW OUT OF THE CASTLE I WAS..." Spamton eyes were turning static again before speaking in a tone so quiet and so unlike him it made susie sit up a bit "alone for so long..." Spamton mumbled before speaking his usual madness of a salesmen voice "AFTER A WHILE IT JUST KEPT HAPPENING... AND IT DIDN'T HELP THAT-" Spamton suddenly froze up seeing something through the window, Spamton almost on instinct ducked under the table and into the table cover hiding. 

Susie just watched for a moment “what...? “

Susie looked around, taking her feet off the table looking around mainly behind her. There was someone outside of the window behind her but it was only an Addison, was Spamton that annoyed by them too? No he actually looked unnerved susie sighed before going under the table taking her chalk with her

Spamton was holding his knees to his chest, even some of the hair on his head was standing up susie sat down "so uh... Why the hell are we hiding? I mean I know Addisons are annoying but you hiding from them? There something I don't know here?" susie asked a little annoyed about the situation 

Spamton looked away seemingly embarrassed "IT'S [HYPERLINK BLOCKED]" Spamton said Susie looked a bit skeptical... Actually she was really fucking skeptical "you've gotta be joking... You're telling me after Me and the others were almost SLAUGHTER by you! You're scared of a little Addison! They’re just annoying, when I first met one I wanted to throw a axe to it’s face" susie admitted 

Spamton sighed "NOT THAT KINDA [FRIGHT OF YOUR LIFE]!" Spamton admitted. Susie had to think "so.... What is it then? Why ARE we hiding? What did this guy do?" susie asked 

Spamton looked down "......." he didn't seem to want to say anything, something about that made susie get the chills 

Finally Spamton told her "I USED TO BE ONE OF THEM... WHEN I [MAKE IT BIG!] THEY STOPPED [SPENDING THE NIGHT OUT] WITH ME AND WHEN I GOT KICKED OUT THEY GOT.... [HYPERLINK B l o-"  susie grabbed Spamton cutting him off 

Before Spamton could process, Susie flat out punched the table off them, sending it flying before grabbing spamton’s wrist dragging Spamton to the door." uh, yeah fuck no! I'm not Kris or Ralsei. I know how that feels and we're about to either just confront him or I'm about to crush his face in with my axe. Let's find out!" Susie shouted grinning showing off her teeth again 

Spamton’s eyes widened under his glasses" UH-- [HOCHIE MAMA] [HOLD DOWN ON THAT DEAL!] " Spamton said seemingly trying to convince susie to not do this but before he could stop her they were already outside. Susie grinned widely before Shouting." HEY YOU! ADDISON!" she shouted at the Pink addison hiding Spamton behind her back who was internally panicking 

The pink addison looked over at her "who? me?" he asked, seemingly confused. The addison backed up a bit seemly a bit intimidated of susie already thanks to the shouting 

"YEAH YOU, YOU KNOW WHO THIS FUCKER IS RIGHT?" she asked holding up Spamton in front of him by Spamton’s wrist before Spamton was put down. Susie spoke up, she wasn't yelling but she might as well have been "He said you left him behind when he made it big, what's that about!?" she asked 

Spamton didn't even know what to do he backed up only to back into susie he was definitely too sore to fight or do anything but he felt like running would make susie grab him before he could 

The addison looked at him before looking away."I don't know him..." the addison clearly lied, which made susie growl "BULLSHIT!" she shouted showing her teeth causing the addison to Tremble and say something in hopes that susie would leave "ok look! I did! But he was a big shot! He didn't need us anymore besides he didn't even work hard for his spot, why should I care for someone who didn't even work hard for what he got" The addison admitted 

Susie looked surprised and looked over at Spamton who was shaking like a leaf and was looking down, yeah he was acting like it was all his fault... But... Susie huffed "so you just left him because he got more popular than you?" susie asked Stepping closer to the Addison who backed up. Susie suddenly took out her axe as she smirked 

"SUSIE WAIT [DON'T - -]" Spamton tried stopping Susie from killing the addison, he didn't want this, yas he didn't like the addisons because of them leaving him behind but was death necessary?  He already hurt others thanks to him losing his mind in that stupid neo form but soon they all seen white Spamton cover his eyes not wanting to see the addsion die in front of him when he shakily took his hands away from his face he looked down only to see the addsion asleep with a bump on their head 

Susie just raises an eyebrow at Spamton "what? You thought I was going to kill him? I just ….knocked them out of service... " susie admitted 

Spamton sighed in relief looking at the Addison "why..." Spamton mumbled 

Susie looked at Spamton her hair covering her eyes 

"...... I know what it's like to have people act like your friends then walk away from you when you need them most... I also know what it's like to have people who you thought hated you suddenly distanced themselves from you... That happened with Lancer... It took a hit to get him to speak... I wouldn't kill them... But if they're being an ass hat they deserve to get hit... Even if they're being mean to a creepy puppet heh..." susie explained 

Spamton looked at the addison who oddly enough looked like they were sleeping peacefully “ugh.....even hitting them on the head wouldn't really bother them would they?” Wait...."UH...[VALUE CUSTOMER] HOW DID YOU NOT [GUT] HIM USING YOUR [SHARPER THAN STE3L SELF-DEFENSE WEAP0N>]?" Spamton asked

Susie pulled out her axe again swirling it in her hand so that the blade was facing towards her 

Spamton realized looking at the axe that the other side wasn't sharp at all, just a metal bar. Susie snickered a little" I've been using it as a bat to - pacify - my opponents..... Don't tell Ralsei....actually don't say any of this to him... " Susie said realizing how crazy things got 

" [YOU'VE GOT YOURSELF A DEAL].... I DON'T THINK I COULD [TELL YOUR FAVORITE STORY] ANYWAYS I THINK I BLACKED OUT A BIT THERE" Spamton admitted 

 Susie looked away "oops...." she mumbled awkwardly "uh oh... We should get you your food... I'll order it again...." susie admitted 

After a while Susie ordered Spamton more food and then sat down again, this time Spamton actually got to sit down and eat. Susie just sat there awkwardly and quietly. She was really bored. Spamton grew quiet, original she was annoyed by spamton’s glitch out maddening sell jargon but now it was too quiet but it made her think about a lot 

"yo Spamton, I got a question?" susie asked 

Spamton moved his half eaten sandwiches away from his face, swallowing his food "YAS? [WHAT CAN I DO FOR YOU?]......ARE YOU GONNA TRY AND [KILL] SOMEONE AGAIN?" he asked seemly not wanting to deal with another one of Susie's slaughter times but he seemed more exhausted of it then scared 

Susie bit the inside of her cheek "I said I was sorry for that!" she huffed "I was wondering... What's with you and Kris? You said something about helping them... But what could you do to possibly help them?? And they’ve.... been acting weird, the more that I think about it..you seem to know something... If anything you've seem to have the same issue as kris.. so what's going on?? " susie asked more then a little confused 

Spamton looked away, this situation was complicated and he didn't even know everything, he knew he wasn't free. How was he supposed to explain it to susie? 

"..... WE CAN'T MAKE [THE DEALS] WE AREN'T [GET ONE FREE!].... THERE'S [STRINGS ATTACHED] WE HAVE NO CHOICE IN WHAT WE DO OR SAY SOMETIMES..." Spamton admitted 

Susie only had more questions, it didn't help that Spamton had something going on with his speech "riiiiiiight..." susie said, pretending to understand. Spamton raised an eyebrow "YOU [DON'T UNDERSTAND!!] WHAT I MEAN.... IS [THAT'S RIGHT!!!]?" Spamton ask

Susie chuckled quietly before speaking with a straight face and even tone "yeah, I have no idea what the hell you just said.... You can't stop glitching out like that can you? It's kinda annoying" susie explained

Spamton huffed "YOU'RE LUCKY YOU'RE NOT THE ONE WHO HAS TO [DEAL] WITH IT [OPEN 24/7]" Spamton admitted,

Susie watched as Spamton ate his food, oh yikes yeah susie would kill herself if she had to deal with that all the time, she has already smashed 5 tvs for having ads play on it last thing she needed was her voice to be a literally salesman voice spouting nonsense without her consent 

"shit... There's no way to stop that from happening to you?" she asked curious 

Spamton had to think long and hard "SOMETIMES WHEN I'M [ŘEADY FOR SOME LATE NIGHT SLEEP] OR WHEN I'M [STAYING CALM AND SAFE FOR THE WINTER NIGHTS] I WILL BUT IT'S A [UNLIMITED EDDY-TION] THAT I HAVE THAT HAPPENS" Spamton explained 

Susie looked down at the table that was somehow taped back together, God this day was a nightmare for her. Spamton watched susie yawn she looked so done with today 

Spamton finished his last bit of food before Speaking. ".... THAnk you..." Spamton said managing to control his glitching for just a moment 

Susie blinked hearing spamtons voice.. Actual voice? "but... For what? I just knocked out someone and broke a table, what's there to be thankful for when you nearly fainted, and you're getting soft? Seriously, what did I do? " she asked, generally confused, she's done nothing but cause trouble like normal hasn't she? 

"... no one has standed up for me like that..... [Ever] ... " Spamton admitted looking down at the table staring at the cracks covered in duct tape." I'VE ALMOST [KILL] YOU AND THE OTHERS.... STILL YOU HELP BREAK MY STRINGS... AND NOW YOU'RE STANDING UP FOR ME... YOU'RE FEEDING ME YOU'RE [CRAZY]!!... I'M PROBABLY [CRAZY] TOO.... I NEVER BELONG ANYWHERE BUT..." Spamton admitted, Susie was shocked but she knew exactly what Spamton meant. Susie took a deep breath 

"IF I COULD [HELP YOU] I WILL, I KNOW I'M TOO [FRAGILE] NOW AND I CAN'T GO THROUGH LAST NIGHT AGAIN.... BUT IF GIVEN THE [CHANCE] I AM WILLING TO [HELP YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD] OUT..." Spamton admitted susie let out a sigh grabbing spamtons hand, he froze up. Oh God not again what is it this time."come here you stupid puppet thing" susie said suddenly giving Spamton a....a hug? Spamton couldn’t even recall his last hug and susie was shockingly gentle even when Spamton could feel her muscles, slowly Spamton hugged back leaning his head on Susie's shoulder 

"you better promise what you said... And no problems, also if Ralsei asks if I did anything today other than break a table I don't need him making me a hug booth or something weird... Uh, Spamton?..." she mumbled seemly embarrassed looking at his face realizing there were tears in his eyes Spamton quickly wiped them away 

Susie groaned “oh god weakness..” she mutter 

Spamton huffed slightly “SORRY [VALID CUST0M] I HADN’T HUG SOMEONE IN A [LONG NIGHT ST4Y]..." Spamton explained to susie who snicker slightly." yeah, that makes the both of us…..i usually hate hugs but you seemed to need it anyways... Susie started walking back to ralsei's place and Spamton both chatted the whole time susie was telling him about how she broke a few TV thanks to ads and Spamton told her stories about why the ads were like that and all the people he has scammed through old salemans tricks, spamton could even voice those violent screaming car ads which susie got a kick out of, Ralsei was waiting by the castle door "oh! I see you two are actually getting along! I'm really glad I was actually a little worried!" Ralsei admitted 

Susie put Spamton on the ground who did not feel uncomfortable due to being used to sitting on susie's shoulders "eh guess you could say we talked it out.. I better go see Lancer and head out before kris goes looking for me" she admitted sighing before slapping Spamtons back like Spamton was glitching but Spamton seen the smirk on Susie's face with a quick wink and felt the sense that this was just her way of giving Spamton a goodbye hug without ralsei asking questions,  spanton just smile widely at her closing his eyes as he tilted his head genuinely happy to have a friend he could trust "no getting into too much trouble now you two i don’t need to be biting peoples faces off down here too!” she joked “take him away relasi i’m gonna go hunt down lancer” she said before sprinting away and waving goodbye leaving ralasi and spamton alone,

Ralsei smiles at spamton “Are you ready to go to your new home now?” Ralsei asked spamton didn’t argue this time he actually smile and nodded “YAS [S1R] I AM” spamton admitted

this isnt quite what you asked but heres what's everyone from chapter 1 has been Up To with a little bit of context (and under a read more bc it got LENGTHY):

kris - professional stay at home teen (they live w/ asgore n help run the flower shop sometimes. this decision was entirely bc i dont like toriel). was wrongly diagnosed w Sudden Soul Rejection when they were incredibly young and given an experimental transplanted soul as a replacement. it works for them fine, give or take having to see gaster once a month for checkups. but sometimes the soul makes them skittish n decides they're going to sit in front of the pc and play 30 consecutive hours of a certain simulation game and not even let them drown people in the pool. if it were entirely up to them, they'd be like. passing out on the sofa to documentaries about bigfoot. or practicing cool knife tricks to impress their friends at their next tabletop meetup

- EDITED IN: the soul is kind of their friend. they are wearing a hypothetical get along shirt. most of the time, they agree on actions and things to do. tends to refer to themself + their soul as we/us which originally was just something they did in their head but they kept slipping in speech/text n just became a Thing of how they talk. switches to 'I/Me' whenever smth is wrong.

- also edited in: they believe the soul they have is their original soul bc nobody has told them otherwise. whenever theyre like 'oh yeah we think about our soul n view it as a separate entity to us like. all the time. it likes to hurt if we make too many choices it doesn't seem to like and kind of forces us to be a toned down version of what we want to be but thats just how souls are haha' and everyone is like.... 'Hey Kris That's Really Not How It Is.' theyre like. 'huh. gonna ignore that for now' - this was going to be a plot point

toriel - head of H0MEWOR1D (H01)'s department of education; kind of lost her roots as a simple math teacher as she was pushed into a lot of power she didn't even really seek out. divorced asgore over some miscommunications in their relationship; also loosely as a result of grief from asriel's death

asgore - the same. runs a lil flower/gift shop. people come in more to talk with him than to buy flowers most of the time, though

asriel Flowey - he's back in flower form, thanks to the government an accident. causes a lot of technology glitches wherever he goes, and wants revenge. isn't sure how to go about it. asriel "died" around 8 years before the story takes place and kris still misses him and refuses to even THINK about even the IDEA of calling someone their sibling after what happened, just in case it somehow happens a second time

susie - more of the same really. she spends most of her time either at grillby's (she's sort of become his assistant n helps with opening/closing. it just happened) or getting into low-stakes trouble w/ kris

noelle - she's in the city's equivalent of college and shes so tired. shes So Abysmally Tired n got kinda pushed 2 follow in her mom's footsteps. she's rarely around anymore except through text or on monsters & mages (dnd) night. (however.........she will come back w/ a long break n hang out w everyone again)

berdly - tbh i didnt even consider berdly when i made the au initially. idk what he's doing. probably in a similar situation to noelle??? canonically got kicked out of the M&M group due to clashes w/ other players but lurks in their group chat to posts memes sometimes

didnt rly think of any other of kris' classmates (+ their families) after ch1 and probably will continue to not, until chs 3-5 come out and i gotta whip up roles and histories for like. a lotta guys all of a sudden. i also forgot about noelle's parents

sans - runs a convenience store that everyone kind of thinks is a front, but also it has really cheap snacks and the local teens make a point of stopping there after school. so essentially, more of the same papyrus - similar to ut. is a very polite and sweet boy but you'll know when he's coming

grillby - he's back. he runs a bar like back in ut but the cozy vibes and weird-for-a-bar hours keep attracting kids who need parents, so half of his menu is comprised of overly sweet mocktails. usually only frequented by monsters

QC - same as usual. has a "rivalry" with grillbz but, theyre besties and have a book club

mettaton - he's real and he's back. he's similar to how he is back in ut w/ his EX body. likes to hang out at grillby's and talk to unsuspecting fans. has a show for everything

napstablook - similar to how they are in ut. helps mtt with making music sometimes. doesn't leave the house too often, but spends a lot of time posting on undernet

undyne - unfortunately. more of the same. she is a cop in the monster district. i am also upset by this but couldn't think of anything better for her

alphys - a doctor studying under dr. gaster in the hopes she'll one day take over his research. she spends most of her time as a nurse with a bigger title, though, and blocks out the weirdness of her job with anime.

gaster - weird guy. H01's top soul researcher and resident House wannabe. trying to manufacture the ultimate soul that can be controlled with simple internal switches, but so far he's only had 1 (very limited) success with a certain human. monsters just melt, and darkners just sorta......get weird... he's onto Something, though.

ralsei - lonely boy with some very strange hobbies. popular on UnderNet for poetry, baking videos, and general cryptid vibe. is the DM for the monsters & mages group (also seems to think everything is actually very fine in H01 when it is very much not)

lancer - about the same. professional Round Boy. lives w/ rouxls full time. follows susie around like a lost puppy and calls himself her "underling."

rouxls - runs a hotel/casino kind of deal where the objective Bad Guys hang out, and usually ends up doing any of the spade king's paperwork.

spade king - mafia godfather. kind of a dick. don't play cards with him

seam - works with the spade king as his right hand cat more or less because they have for a lot of years and are in that 'sunk cost fallacy' zone. thinks of retiring to a quiet life in the monster section of town like, daily

jevil - used to work with the spade king, but got imprisoned for Crimes. got weird after The Accident (separate from asriel's accident)

temmies (all) - dont really get mentioned except offhandedly but they run the monster space station. so far, are the only monsters who have ever been to space.

as far as chapter 2 goes:

yeah i dont have much so far for characters. in the original version of the au i accidentally made darkners as a whole just kinda..... not great? like all sorts of weird organized crime ties n sort of going out of their way to be A Problem to the city (not even in like. a revolution way. in a working against them but with the same goals kinda way). with the whole context it worked At The Time, bc i just had the spade king to look to as a villain, and also in this au the darkners are just trying to survive a world that ultimately was not built for them (that humans think they own, and monsters sort of... seeing this and wondering what it'll mean for them whichever one wins), but w/ new info abt how the dark world works n more guys to work with i want to kind of. edit the vibe a bit. like yea darkners will ultimately do whatever it takes to take over H01, but maybe in a better way than like. idk. all this. it doesnt have to be peaceful or anything it just has to be more adaptable as we meet more kinds of darkners

however yeah i thought up 'queen as some sort of childless mommy blogger/influencer' and that completely revived all memory i had of this au. she should be on mtt's talkshow. also she sells collectible wine glasses w/ her likeness

spamton is another one of gaster's failed soul experiments, but he hasn't melted yet, and seems............fine? sort of. so he hasn't gotten decommissioned yet. he does want to give you malware tho. hot monster singles in your area n all that

Delta Rune: Addendum

People have asked me if my opinions have shifted at all in light of Toby Fox’s FAQ.

The answer is yes and no. 

Also, I’ve gotten a fair amount of...unasked for feedback on my other post, which was mostly just my own musings and opinion? So I might as well just kinda...address a bunch of things here, based on a couple observations over the last 48 hours.

What People Didn’t Like (And Why)

The Repetition of Plot Elements from Undertale in the Dark World

This one’s pretty common, and very justified given that, when the demo first launched, we had no idea that it was a demo. For all we knew, it was some kind of finished product. 

Although I didn’t want to believe that this is the case, it’s not uncommon for creators to accidentally fall into a sophomore slump of sorts, where under the pressure of measuring up to their freshman fame, they end up creating something dull and uninspired. 

Despite that, there wasn’t any level of self-awareness that indicated that the Dark World was supposed to be a cheaper version of Undertale. And then it ended by falling into the “it was just a dream” trope (not entirely, but close enough), which is one of my least favorite tropes, so I was just turned off altogether. 

The Battle System

I didn’t really enjoy the new combat system (that’s definitely a personal thing though...turn-based jrpg games have always been a struggle for me, and I straight up don’t have the time for the strategy that it often takes). That aside, Fox himself admits that the system is rough and really unbalanced.  

Also, I get the sense that he wants to bring home that theme of your choices mean nothing, but isn’t exactly sure how to do that yet, which explains a lot of the issues with ACTing in the demo.

Even after he gets it fixed up, I’m not sure I’m really going to enjoy the battle system, although I do commend him for his creativity and the attempt to integrate Undertale’s bullet hell into a turn-based game style.

Underdeveloped Characters

This one I can forgive almost entirely, by nature of it being a demo rather than a finished piece of work. I can relax my criticism of the Dark World NPCs as a result.

That said, I still failed to really feel anything other than aww...cute a couple of times (usually as Ralsei)

Oh, that and a shit ton of existential horror at Undyne and Alphys not knowing each other, the world being generally indifferent to whatever made Susie the way she is, and that everybody is turning a blind eye or actively punishing Asgore for some unknown crime. 

But I’ll talk about that a bit more in the next section.

The Vague Relation to Undertale and the Re-Use of Characters

Okay so like. I understand that Toby Fox insists that it’s Not Undertale.

Except that like.

I don’t buy that for a second.

Like, it’s Not Undertale only in the sense that it’s not related to the pacifist ending, but doesn’t disqualify it from being a follow-up to the genocide run (and therefore a direct sequel of sorts). 

That aside, if it truly was Not Undertale, then he wouldn’t have named it Delta Rune, brought Gaster into it, and drawn visual and flavor text metaphors to the original game. It’s related, it might be an AU, but that doesn’t make the OOC meanness of the familiar faces easy to swallow.

It could easily interpreted as “unsettling and OOC to show the player that their expectations will be subverted and that there is something Seriously Wrong with this world,” and a lot of people have interpreted it that way! I’m on the fence there myself, but you gotta understand that not everybody shares that interpretation.

For others, including myself to some extent, the message was: 

In the absence of dire circumstances, the characters that you were led to believe cared deeply about each other and you, are indifferent, apathetic, and  downright mean.

I mean, even if Kris on their own is a total dick? That doesn’t justify the way that the other characters treat each other. 

And that lack of warmth in the story was felt like a gut-punch to a small number of people.

On top of that, the weird twist ending didn’t do much to subvert that message. It gave no sense of whether or not the entire thing indicated a fundamentally sick world, or disprove that sense of they only cared about you and others out of a mutual need.

And if you can put yourself in that mindset, you can understand how that could be painful.

What People Didn’t Like About Me (And Others) Not Liking It

No, I’m complaining because it’s Too Much Undertale. Because my personal prerogative is that Undertale is perfect the way it is and any additional content would only detract value from the original.

I was sincerely hoping for a totally new game, with maybe cameos or nods to Undertale, because I didn’t want to risk that horrible sequel syndrome. 

And while we, as fans, can opt to ignore horrible sequels (see: the entirety of the Harry Potter fandom), at the same time...sometimes you can’t unsee what you’ve seen. Sometimes sequels are enough to mar your affections and feelings for characters, especially because it comes from The Voice of God Dog.

You’re Can’t Complain that Things are OOC When It’s an AU!

Look. I don’t know if you know this, but I adore AUs. Not every AU, of course, but I loved the concept and how the community came together to create some kind of semi-cohesive multiverse.

I mean, I literally drew over 100 different AUs:  SET 1 || SET 2 || SET 3 || SET 4 || SET 5 || SET 6 || SET 7 || SET 8 ||

But there’s a difference between fandom AUs and canon AUs--namely in that fandom AUs can be as out of character as they want, because it’s a fan creation.

There are multiple series that play with that multiverse theory as well, within their own canons, starting with the entire body of Osamu Tezuka, but also including the works of CLAMP (most notably XxxHolic and Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicles), Adventure Time, the Final Fantasy series, and so on.

And the key to making an effective multiverse? The thing that makes it work? 

Keeping the characters in-character. There has to be that kind of consistency, otherwise it doesn’t function on a narrative level. You’re just reusing character designs and assigning new personalities, because you’re too lazy to design new characters.

Or worse, you’re baiting in previous players on a sense of nostalgia which is a trick I do not appreciate.

It’s okay to dislike additional material, for whatever reason, so long as you’re not attacking others for liking it. It’s okay to be upset by something, even if it’s not rational, and you don’t need to force others to like what you like, nor should you feel guilty that somebody else doesn’t ‘get it.’ 

Will You Play Chapter 2?

I will purchase it to support Toby Fox on his endeavors. 

But you gotta understand, I straight up don’t play video games most of the time. Don’t have the time or the energy.

I only played Undertale after I’d had the whole thing spoiled to me, and knew it was worth the investment of my time. I should’ve waited on this one too, but I was too eager, and instead lost 4-5 hours of critical time for my graduate coursework (which definitely contributed to my annoyance).

TL;DR

You guys realize it’s okay for people to dislike deltarune? It’s okay for them to have been hurt by the characterization in deltarune? And people don’t have to write an essay in order to hold those opinions?

And that you don’t have to aggressively convert people to it like you’re some kind of church missionaries?

-sighs- At any rate, beginning to feel a bit more optimistic overall, and after that interview I can feel Toby Fox’s enthusiasm (he had something cool and he couldn’t wait to show it off!!), and I can get excited for him and others, even if as a whole the entire game experience fell flat.

Some day, I might even warm up to the game well enough to draw some stuff some time. I’ve got some fun ideas and theories, but still refuse to be hopeful that it’ll actually shape up.

Prediction for Deltarune Chapters 2-7

 -Spoilers under the cut-

Chapter 2:A fourth player joins the team but it’s not Noelle, it’s Jockington (A Gunner) who only needed to get a pencil. There’s a second fountain in need of closing and Ralsei is concerned about the fourth member. Kris is still mostly sane at this point. Lancer returns but this time as a good guy and this time they fight in a town full of stuffed animals. They seal the fountain and the three return to the outside world. After defeating the boss of this world, Susie also shows Kris that she did her work some point in the chapter and Kris says that they’re starting theirs. Jockington makes a joke about how they might be a thing which Susie gets all angry at. Kris then goes home, learns omnisans secret, and works on the project for a little bit, tearing their soul out and mentioning that “you are not in control of me.” Chapter 3:Susie and Kris go to China town, literally, unaware that they’re getting followed by Catti (summoner). She was curious why Kris and Susie had been skipping class lately. She says she’s gonna tell Alphys about their behavior unless they tell the truth. When she tries activating her phone though, there’s no wi fi so she’s forced to play protagonist number 5 until the final boss. During their time Susie asks Catti if she and Jokcingotn are dating to which she replies,  with a maybe. Kris dosen’t like this and demands a yes or no answer. Ralsei reminds Kris that they are on borrowed time and that now isn’t the right place to fight. Upon returning to the light world, Susie notices a black spot on the wall but thinks nothing of it. Kris shows Susie the progress that they made in their project and as a reward Susie decides to award them by letting them see their home. During their trip to her house Asriel calls saying “Hey Kris! I’m gonna be coming home on Sunday!” Kris starts to cry at this statement.

Chapter 4:You want Noelle to be a protagonist now don’t you? Well here’s the Healer Noelle chapter you wanted. Alphys says that due to something happening the supplies cabinet is locked up. Susie is angry at this and demands Alphys opens it up but is persuaded other wise when Kris says “DO NOT OPEN IT, OR WE DON’T KNOW WHAT WILL BE UNLEASHED.” So Susie and Kris decide to just skip the darker world today until Noelle joins them and says that her dad needs help at the hospital. They fall down a medicine cabnet and find medicine monsters. Ralsei says that there’s no fountain here but understands that Neolle’s father is probably in need of the medicine so he helps. Through out the Chapter it’s obvious that Kris’ is acting...weird. Their soul isn’t there and you seem to lose control of them at times. While Ralsei finds this odd Susie is enjoying this and Noelle, being used to their bullcrap, ignores this. There’s also also a love confession scene with Noelle and Susie...which sadly does not go well, not matter what you do. After finding the medicine Noelle is depressed and decides that it would be best if she walked home alone. Susie thinks that she was kinda harsh and her and decides to make it up tomorrow. Kris is left alone to walk from home to here. It’s there they meet Sans, who has had his eye on them ever since they laid eyes. They talk about their natural distrust towards one another which is soon interrupted by Papyrus offering ravioli. DUN DUN DUUUUUUUUUUN. Also there’s a black puddle on the way back home and Toriel seems to be a bit unwell, BUT RAVIOLI INSTEAD OF SPAGETHI IS THE MAIN THING

Chapter 5:Berdly (inventor) is the last one to join team KSR. Ralsei, being Ralsei, tries to tolerate him but it’s very hard to when he keeps brining up science stuff. What makes matters worse is that they’re in the science lab. Susie thinks about how she’ll make things up with Noelle and she’s a lot more nervous then usual. Kris is still like they are in Chapter 4. Ralsei says that there’s one more fountain to be closed but up next is the strongest enemy they’ve faced so far so he’s glad that he brought Lancer along for the ride. Oh Lancer is there as well BTW, it’s 5 vs ? during most of the battles, except the ones in a specific part which is only Susie and Kris. After defeating the boss Ralsei warns Kris that even though all the fountains are sealed, there’s still danger. For the knight still walks alone and the angel is yet to be seen. Upon returning to the light world Berldy realizes how much of class he misses and hopes he can make it up. Susie talks to Noelle about what happened last night in the dark world and you don’t get to see if they make up or not. Upon the walk home, there’s a lot of worry and panic throughout the town. More and more people start talking about a mysterious dark spots in the town. Alphys reports to a local police lady that the world as we know it is going to end and Undyne gives her a big hug. Napstablook, chief police, says he’ll do investigating but when he steps over the puddle something interesting happens. The police hat he’s wearing turns into headphones. And when Kris steps over it they turn into their darkener self. The chapter ends with Kris threatening to stab the soul... Chapter 6:...But that doesn’t happen thanks to a restraint from Toriel. The town is in a panic. There are no visits to the dark world today. Kris calls Asriel who still says that he's coming over which is the only good news Kris head. No one is happy, well except Susie, who for once in her life time feels as though there’s nothing to worry about she’s got her side of the project done and Kris is almost done with theirs so they should be good. It’s at this moment the other classmates appear and talk to Susie and Kris about their adventures in the dark world and explain that Ralsei might have been twisting the truth a little bit in his prophecy. Berdly states that, upon doing some research, there was only supposed to be two heroes, a human and a monster and that if they were to seal these fountains the sky would turn black. Susie gets angry all of the sudden and demands that they find Ralsei and have him explain his actions at once. Kris though pulls the dagger out of their pocket and says otherwise and “you’ll have to get through me first, Suzy.” You play as the five other students in their regular forms and although they don’t have Kris’ dagger or abilities they had in the dark they do have their natural abilities. Susie asks what they hell that was about and Kris explains that they are not who is in control at all times sometimes -your vessel name here- takes over. It’s then your vessels pops out of your soul and reveals it’s form that you did. It doesn’t say anything and simply disappears. Suddenly Kris feels in control of their body again and lets go of the knife. Right now they’ve got one more thing to do, find Ralsei and the knight. First things first, Ralsei. After fighting tons and tons of bad guys, the six eventually find him near a forest and they ask him what Ralsei really wanted. “It’s quite simple really,” says the dark prince “I wanted you to be fooled by an innocent look.” In reality he was the angel that was to bring chaos to this land and before you know it, new home is covered in darkness. Everyone is scared now. People don’t know what to do and thus the gang has to fight him. Thankfully, he gave them their powers back. But first, the monsters must find the knight. Chapter 7:Leaving Kris behind they reunite with Lancer and decide to add him to the party one last time meaning it’s basically 6 against 1 and 8 if they can get the knight to side with them. It takes a little why but they do find out who created the Dark World at least “Dr.Gaster” whose from a parralel universe known as Undertale, which he can no longer return too. So he created this universe in his image with a few familiar faces and some new. However it seems that there was an error in his makings or something. The knight appears and fights Dr.Gaster, no matter how good of a fighter you are the knight will grab his soul and run off with it. However don’t lose hope. For with his soul came a hint to the knight’s location. Once they find the knight he asks “where is Kris?” they refuse to tell them their location and get into a fight. The fight is rigged for him to lose no matter what you do. He surrenders but still wants to know where Kris is, for only he and Kris can stop Ralsei. Ultimately they cooperate and each one goes and fights a boss from the world they appeared in but not by themselves. Susie gets help from MK, Temmie Alphys, and Snowy. Jockington gets help from Alvin, Mettaton, Napstablook & Undyne. Catty, Bratty, the blue bunny and Burgerpants help out Catti. Sans, Papyrus, and Rudolph help Noelle and Berdly. Finally Susie and Lancer get help from the Dreemurs and Gaster. Kris and the Knight have to fight the second boss before Ralsei before they can reach him. After that they reach Ralsei once and fight him in his new found angelic form. ZUN helps compose the music for the final boss themes and in order to defeat him you’re gonna need a lot of time to get him. There’s 3 phases, one of him saying that balance needs not be restored and that your’e the ones restoring the balance. The second is of him showing him the true demon behind the angel wings and with wings of familiar colors appear. Scars, injuries and a destroyed kingdom are all explained through this phase. Eventually it seems like the Kris is about to give up but then phase 3 happens with the most unexpected twist. “...No you can’t die now Kris.” he says “And why not?” they ask.

“...Because I haven’t even got you hot choclate yet.” After defeating the demon Ralsei once and for all the truth is explained to Kris. Asriel’s college is were he studies parallel worlds or something like that and the dark world here was a parallel version fo the light world. However Ralsei was sick and tired of balance all the time, he wanted chaos and disorder so he went and did just that. He eventually gets arrested and light and dark is restored again with hometown being a mix of light and dark. Ralsei is jail mates with King Chaos and Lancer transfers schools to go with Susie. She doesn’t get together with Noelle, but she’s moved on to a girl that she meet in the darker world. Undyne and Alphys get together. Omnisan finally tells us their secret. The dog finishes his game. Kris and Asriel go get that hot choclate and life returns  to usual. With Kris pulling out the soul again, but more gently...and setting it down in the cage saying “thank you.”

I said I was gonna probably talk abt Deltarune, I’m talking abt Deltarune

ALSO. THERE WILL BE SPOILERS FOR THE END OF THE GAME. LOTS AND LOTS OF SPOILERS

theres a whole lot to unpack from the ending, and I have a few headcannons in mind. I’m also going to focus on Kris, Frisk, Chara, Asriel, and Ralsei and the connections between them. It’s a lot of word barf too, so be warned.

(also I haven’t seen any theories from the deltarune fandom, this is all what I got from deltarune. I’ve kept it blacklisted bc I’m not going to have it tainted like undertale was.)

as we know, this universe is one where monsters never went underground. and as we know, everyone (keep this in mind) from the previous game is alive but living very similar, but different lives. And then there’s us. Kris. A new character presumably not from the last game Here’s what I think so far:

Chara was most definitely the voice talking to us in the beginning. They have the same kind of speech patterns and the same kind of thinking. “Its kill or be killed” “You can’t choose who you are in this world.” Both Chara and the voice have a very pessimistic view of the world, mostly about how people are naturally very cruel and will hurt you any chance they get. (and honestly, considering Kris’ life in the upper world, it would make sense that they too would have the same thought process).

As for the end, what happened in the end scene has happened before, multiple times before. It wasn’t because Kris went to the dark world. The birdcage they (or Chara) throws their soul in the cage is significantly damaged and the cage shakes with the force of it. It would explain why Kris always wakes up late for school, because they go out and do, whatever it is they do at night, and their body gets very tired. The ending scene also suggests that Kris isn’t pulling their soul out willingly, or even getting out of bed willingly. And since that’s supposed to be Kris’ soul, that means their soul isn’t in their body anymore, which suggests something else. 

also, I think the “incident”, whatever it was, that tore the family apart and outcasted Asgore has something do with Kris’ specifically. The first time there was an incident in the family it was when the Chara and Asriel fusion died, and the second time Asgore killed a bunch of kids. It doesn’t seem like Asgore killed some kids because he’s not in jail or anything, but it was definitely something that upset both Tori and Asgore significantly, so it might have had to do with the kids. That was also the turning point for both Asriel and Chara to become flowey and murder child so this universe’s kids must have changed significantly too.

Remember how I said everyone is living similar yet very different lives? In the last game, we played two characters: Frisk in pacifist and Chara in fight, but Kris is new, presumably one of them. Initially it seems like Kris is in Frisk’s place If Asriel is cannonly around the same age as Chara and is in college, I’d pit him around his early 20’s, maybe still 18. Considering the school looks like it was made for younger students and there are already stereotypes in the school (Susie, obviously) I’d pit Kris somewhere in middleschool, in sixth grade at the very least and eighth or ninth grade at the very most. Probably 12, or 13? 15 at most (which was around the age Frisk probably was when they fell). So they’d be more than four years apart, and that's a conservative estimate.

At the same time though, both Chara and Kris (other than share the same sweater) also share a personality as the weird kid that doesn’t talk that much. They naturally do very weird things that frighten other people, but they seem like pranks at worst. And they’re also naturally very aloof and don’t talk a lot and likes to keep to themselves (but will make an exception for Asriel). What Kris does with Asriel is also similar to what Chara did with him (Asriel’s final form was referenced by one of the characters, where they say that Chara and Asriel were too busy focusing on the wings). Then again, Frisk doesn't talk a lot either.

But then it came down to the name. I was originally confused why Kris had such a normal name, but if Ralsei is just a rewording of the name “Asriel” and is supposed to represent a version of Asriel, then “Kris” may be “Frisk” without the “F” (it also may be a stretch but I think there is no F because you probably shouldn't fight. Either that, or putting an F in that name is kinda hard to do). Thats what I initially thought that was. But If you pronounce Chara the same way you pronounce the first part of the word “Character”, then the name sounds like “Kara.” Add the K of Kara and the ris from “Frisk” and you get “Kris”. Not only that, but the regular spelling of Kris is Chris, “Ch” from Chara, “ris" from Frisk, and the “Ch” is disguised as a K from Frisk (also to make it more gender neutral, I think)

So maybe Kris isn’t just Chara or isn’t just Frisk, they’re both, a mixture of the two angels that fell down to free the monsters from the underground. But then why is the Chara part of them so prevalent here? 

I think that’s because Chara’s possessing Kris. Since characters like Chara can break the fourth wall and don’t follow the laws of reality, as well as know of alternate universes and endings, Chara could have crossed from the Undertale Universe into the Deltarune Universe, and then influenced their “Chara” side more.

Here’s what I think happened: An incident occurred where Kris and Asriel were put in danger that almost killed them. They lived, obviously, but Kris became very vulnerable. Because Kris was very vulnerable at the time and is also the version of Chara here, it was easy for Chara to possess them.

It may be very easy for Kris to be possessed frequently. When we first meet sans and he greets you, you have the opportunity to say “good to see you again” or something like that, to which sans replies that he’s never met you before. Either Kris was joking around or that was actually Chara saying hi to him. Plus the phase “It’s only you.” when you look in the mirror is a bit....ominous, and can imply there can be another person there sometimes.

Kris isn’t possessed all the time though, they still wake up late, and it’s implied they still have control of themselves sometimes —when you visit Rudy, there’s a card on the table that “you” have never seen before, even though you wrote it.  And Chara has to store the soul in the birdcage frequently, implying that Kris can fight them, to some degree.

So if Chara has been here the whole time, and has been possessing Kris frequently, what exactly are they doing? Honestly, I really don’t know. As Undyne says, the town is really boring. Of course, considering the shit that went down at the end of the game, that's probably going to change. Still though, I have no idea what they were doing before the whole “dark world” business.

I’m not going to go into much detail into Ralsei but I do want to point out one thing that stood out to me. He seems like a pretty cut n dry character, and his purpose as Asriel’s reverse is pretty obvious. He is the dark opposite of Asriel, he’s the dark prince living in the castle, while everyone in his universe is alive except for him, all of his subjects are gone and he’s the only one left. His name is literally a respelling of the world Asriel, plus he’s a goat. A goat. 

But if there’s one thing that concerned me the most was how insistent he was on making sure you “acted” instead of “fought”. what stood out to me the most was when he was talking about the consequences of fighting, he said something alone the lines of “You may not like the outcome/ending you get.” Which makes me wonder what exactly happened to him and his entire kingdom. And since he’s technically a version of Asriel (who is still Flowey in the undertale universe), maybe he knows about the old resets from the Undertale universe. 

The other theory is he went through his own fight route which honestly sounds pretty intense. Really intense. Considering that flowey too did many routes, especially fight routes, the idea that Ralsei here could have done a kill route too can be very possible. also, the way Ralsei tells Kris to act sounds less like “dont do this because I saw someone else do it”, and more like “don’t do this because I did it and now I live with the consequences”.

Ralsei: Kris, we have a surprise for you!

Susie, walking in with a cake: it's just for you!

Lancer, squeaking by to set up a mini table in Kris' room: Susie though you were having a rough time, so she asked Ralsei to help make a special cake!

Ralsei, happy: She didn't even try swiping away any frosting!

Susie, whispering to Kris as she sets down the cake: I might've stolen a tiny amount of Frosting, but trust me, Ralsei lays it on thick.

Kris, examining the heart shaped cake, the Frosting has a drawing of Ralsei hugging Kris on the left as Susie gives a friendly noogie on the right of the drawing, they have a cyan tint circle background behind the 3 characters, while the rest of it is covered in relatively black frosting, except for a space on the bottom of the heart shaped cake that uses the same tint of blue as Kris' character, Signed Lancer: . . . Guys...

Lancer: it was a group effort! We all wanted to give you a part of us, Blue Kid!

Ralsei: I think Lancer mostly just wanted to be apart of it because Susie wanted to work on it, but he is right!

Susie: if you need help cutting into the cake, making it a few sections to make it easier, I'll give you one of my axes to help

Kris: can I be alone for a moment?

Susie, picking up everyone and leaving: Sure thing Kris!

Kris, alone, the door closed: Thank you...
