I'm finally trying to finish this game, and I gotta say, I love Mr. Lightning Bolt here. Also love when he goes full Jack the Ripper. Love how he speaks as if he never had a single day of a normal life and is so friggin' clueless how to act like a human being (all true, really) - but is a weapon on mass destruction.

I wanted to test a few new brushes and a more traditional looking lineart/painting style - can't AT ALL mimic Yoji Shinkawa's art for the series to save my life, but this is a first step into a "messier", more painterly style. Quite happy with the result for a first test/study!

My Stand-In

I love a deranged character, and Ming delivered that in spades. This could have been a story about revenge, but I liked it better for being a story about learning from your mistakes and granting second chances. Ming was still deranged, but at least he learned that Joe deserved to be treated better, and Joe learned to demand it.

Listen. Me🤝Taiwan = shipping brothers. In all seriousness, though, this show was beautiful. The love and care these three siblings have for each other was so wonderful. It felt like being invited into their home, and I was a very satisfied guest.

We Are

I can't be objective or normal about this show. Every complaint I've seen about it fell on my deaf ears. This is my family. Phum and Peem are my parents even though they are half my age. These friends and their love stories made my 2024 brighter and filled me with so much joy that I will take them with me in my pocket wherever I go, and pull them out when I'm feeling lonely so I can remember, I'm not alone.

4 Minutes

This show probably won't age well, but watching it week to week as it was airing was an incredible experience. Thinking about, theorizing, and yelling on Tumblr about it ate up 8 weeks of my life, and I loved every minute of it. The acting was aces, particularly Fuaiz, who really dug his claws into his character, Tonkla, and stole every scene he was in.

Let Free The Curse Of Taekwondo

Korea, my beloved! There is something about the repressive culture of Korea that really gets me in their BL. For a people who keep it very demure, very mindful, adding a layer by piling on angst around sexuality hurts in the best way. LFTCOT embodied that feeling perfectly. It was the sweetest ache. A hurt so good.

Takara No Vidro

I'm not going to lie. Part of what made me even finish this post is this show. I haven't seen it on many lists, and it was my favorite from Japan this year. Watching Takara's obsessive love for Taishan slowly reveal itself was a true pleasure. Takara's subtle yearning, his repression, his holding back as a punishment for wanting too much, and his fear of becoming a monster in love were so, so delicious. I thought Iwase Yoji portrayed him beautifully, and I loved every minute of this delightful little show.

I Saw You In My Dream

WeTV knocked it out of the park this year, but this one was my favorite of their offerings. All of their shows had couples with great communication, really good examples of enthusiastic consent, and really wonderful depictions of friendships and friends groups being supportive and as important as romantic love in their character's lives. ISYIMD gave me four boys who were part brothers, part friends, and part something more. Their love stories were held back by fear - fear of losing the love and relationships they already had for and with each other. Ai's premonition dreams are the catalyst that makes it possible for him and Yu to finally realize their feelings for each other. I love a genuine friends to lovers story, and this one was beautiful.

The Only One

I don't mind an open ending or a story left unfinished, so this show didn't leave me feeling disappointed the way it did some others. I still hope we get a S2 and the conclusion of Jiang Tian and Sheng Wang's love story, but even if this is all I ever get, I'm satisfied. Again, I'm a sucker for complicated love, so two boys falling in love despite their parents also being romantically involved was always going to get me. Watching them navigate their growing attachment to each other, their fear and anticipation at finding a kindred spirit, and then realizing they want each other in an impossible way was the most delicious angst.

Cherry Magic TH

The original Cherry Magic is a BL cornerstone, so imagine my surprise when I walked away from this show feeling like Thailand outdid the original. And GMMTV Thailand at that! Tay and New have great chemistry, but it's their familiarity with one another, and their obvious love and care for each other that I think really made this adaptation shine. Karan was the best green flag, and it was a joy watching him get all the love and devotion he deserved from Achi. Achi's journey of self-discovery and self-love was beautiful, too. It was an absolute joy watching these two fall in love.

Love Sick 2024

Full disclosure, I never watched the original Love Sick, and I probably never will. What I loved about this show was its perfect depiction of teen angst. These kids were all hormonal messes -- navigating parental expectations, sexuality crises, crushes, and academic pressures. They really were love sick with all the angst and melodrama that entails. Not a single one of them knew how to talk to each other. Their insecurities were bigger than Texas, and their lack of communication was often frustrating, but all of that just made everything more realistic. These were children, navigating love the way children often do -- badly 😂. I loved that the show cast actual kiddos (no one in the cast is over 19), and all of them were phenomenal. I can't wait to see more from them in the future, but especially Almond, who played one of the main leads, Phun. He's an excellent little actor, and I'm excited to follow his career in the future.

Which Works-in-Progress (WIPs) or writing projects are you noodling about, lately?

Your Wish Is My Command is my current WIP at about 75% complete. I have a little bit to share from Tenshito as well, but the latter will have to get majorly cut down and restructured before it’s ready ✨

How long have you been working on them?

Planning and ideas began a couple of years ago. Writing them down? For YWIMC since early May, and Tenshito since 2020 (took a hiatus to focus on work and big life stuff, like moving twice and getting married)

Do you remember what inspired them/what got you started?

My love of storytelling, video games, and Disney. I wrote and published Peter Hart based off of a few of my favorite video games 🏴‍☠️💛✨

How much time, in your best estimation, do you spend thinking about them?

All the time. At least once a day, if not more. My stories help me get to sleep…when I eventually GET to sleep 😴💤

What makes you want to follow another Writeblr account? Do you follow ‘em as you see ‘em, or take time scoping out the blog to make sure you align with its content? Do you follow based on WIPs, or vibes?

I scope out the content before I follow for sure. Because I write adult fiction, I look through posts to make sure that our interests would align, and that the blog mentions an age that is 18+. If I am ever uncertain or have a suspicion beyond a reasonable doubt that the blog is run by a minor, I won’t follow them (and unfollow if I get suspicious of their posts)

What makes you decide against following?

I use discretion on age, politics, and religion before following. Any homophobic, transphobic, or otherwise hateful conduct gets automatically blocked. The world needs more kindness and uplifting of one another. We need to bring each other up, not tear each other down.

Do you interact with non-mutuals often?

I try to! Usually in the form of reblogs and ask games. My pile for work and tumblr keeps stacking though, so I find myself getting very busy very often (and that’s a good thing! ✨)

I think I might have an idea how to help with Portal Jacked episode

An awful idea. An awful great dea.

Well technically it’s just an options I came up with but here they are.

1.) Leo and Adri got separated from Raph, Donnie and Mikey and look for help from Hueso. They are with him until that pub decable when he deceived them and they take him through portal to confront him. Only it’s only Adriaen with Hueso as Leonardo got separated them from them end up with Ronin.

Or

2. Leo and Adri got separated from Leo’s brothers AND themselves (Adri end’s up in Run in the Mill while ends in Hidden City with Ronin). The plot is same only divided on two A-plots, where Adri had to deal with Hueso while Leo had to deal with Ronin.

There will shenanigans, inner fears revealed, character, bonds developments, lore etc. and both plots collide(roll credits) in one climax.

Leo: Adri! Senõr Hueso?

Adri: Leo? Ronin?!

Ronin: Hey Adri. Wait Hueso?

Hueso: Pepino? Killer Yojimbo?!

Adri and Leo: Killer Yoji-wha?!

Honestly love both these ideas. The amount of shenanigans I can pull with these three. It’s hard to pick which direction to go in for when the chapter does eventually come.

I think there’s like 2 chapters before Portal Jacked. The next chapter I’m making is an original plot that’s based off Ronin. Then the next is like Splinter going to April’s work and infiltrating the foot clan, and then after that it’s portal jacked I think???

Patlabor is On Lock

12 Days of Aniblogging 2023, Day 3

While Gundam is the most recognizable mecha anime I got into this year, most of my time was really spent working my way through the Patlabor franchise, and it’s quickly become one of my favorites. I’ve always loved the quiet moments in mecha shows, which makes sense considering I started with Macross and live for the bridge bunny gossip and off-duty downtown hangouts. Patlabor is built with this downtime at its core, operating with more of a slice of life mentality than anything else.

A lovable cast is crucial for making this work. Thankfully, Noa Izumi is a wonderful and unique protagonist, a scrappy soft butch who’s in it for the eroticism of the machine. The first Patlabor opening is a love letter from Noa to her mecha, and I get it! The AV-98 Ingram is an iconic design, with its asymmetric bunny ear antennae and shoulder lights and comically oversized revolver that requires the right hand to pop out in order to draw, exposing the arm wiring in the process. This is a show clearly written by first-generation mecha otaku, and plenty of time is dedicated to showing how the Labors have to be transported and recharged, how the movement software depends on reinforcement learning, showing off corporate model revisions, and of course repairs in the hangar.

Going back to the human characters, Noa’s work partner Asuma is clearly the more passive one within their dynamic, and it’s sweet to see that played out sincerely. And then there’s Kanuka Clancy, the stern weirdo badass from New York who’s constantly swearing and dropping one-liners in English. She’s the obvious breakthrough character of the show, and also the perfect opposites-attract pairing for Noa if you’re the kind of person whose yuri meter went off the charts during their drinking contest episode. Most of Patlabor’s cast seem fairly one-note at first, and one of the great tricks of the show is giving them just a little bit more depth than you would expect. Pretty much everyone, even the most jokey characters, eventually get a standalone episode or two that further sketches them out and offers real interiority. Captain Goto is another fan-favorite, and it’s definitely his mixture of laziness and wicked perceptiveness that does it, plus his main character billing in the movies.

SV2 may be a law enforcement unit, but this really isn’t a police procedural at the end of the day. These guys are the bum department out in the sticks who everyone hates, and the upside of that is that SV2 gets stuck with the oddest of jobs instead of cop work. Sometimes that’s dealing with a runaway military prototype, other times it’s arguing with the insurance company. The best kind of episodes are the ones that take almost entirely on base as everyone tries to solve a problem of their own making, like an Ingram falling into the sea or the mechanics getting into a fight with the only restaurant that delivers to them.

A main plot does eventually emerge, with a shadowy company developing a mysterious jet-black Labor piloted by a child who is the girlish boy to Noa Izumi’s boyish girl. The Griffon is sleek and curvy and has superiority in the water and air – it’s a machine designed to defeat Ingrams, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Yoji Shinkawa looked here when designing Metal Gear RAY. Automation is a fundamental ideological enemy of mecha – faceless mass production and artificial intelligence mean an end to the era of personal combat. Even Patlabor, a warless series, dips its toes into this idea in the later episodes, with Noa and the mechanics alike worrying that the neural networks in their new Labor models will make them redundant.

Overall, this show is hilarious and sweet and clearly loved by an older generation of otaku. So why didn’t I hear about it earlier? Partly it’s on me for not hanging out with the right mecha fans online for a while. But if I had to guess, it’s also because Patlabor is one of those works that’s straightforwardly, unobjectionably good in a way where it already says everything there is to be said about it. You can have near-infinite arguments about Zeon ideology or mobile suit powerscaling online, but there’s only so many times you can say “yeah, Noa Izumi, love that girl” precisely because everyone agrees. It can also be hard to pitch things by their vibes in a genre known for adrenaline and intrigue. Patlabor’s vibes, for the record, are immaculate.

Mecha’s also a bit looked down upon from the outside. Anything that makes it into the larger conversation has to be understood as “elevated” or a “genre deconstruction”, even if the very first Mobile Suit Gundam is already about Amuro’s trauma and PTSD from being made into a child soldier. This elevation is actually happening to the second Patlabor movie as we speak - it’s becoming increasingly discussed as a major component of Mamoru Oshii’s filmography, divorced from its source series and instead compared to his subsequent Ghost in the Shell movie. Funnily enough, Oshii’s contributions to the Patlabor TV show are actually the more lighthearted gag episodes.

A lot of recent Patlabor retrospectives have drawn attention to the artist’s collective Headgear, established and owned by the series creators so they would be able to retain the rights for the franchise. This structure is fairly unique for the anime industry and probably only makes sense for established creatives, but it does seem to have worked out great for them, providing financial stability and strong creative control over the franchise. This allowed Patlabor to thrive in the relative wasteland of late 80s TV anime, a time when even Gundam had fled to the OVA market.

That being said, it does take Patlabor switching back to OVAs to truly spread its wings. The New Files are a conclusion and continuation of the TV series that are willing to move at their own pace, resulting in some dramatic and surprisingly thoughtful stories. It’s genuinely touching to watch Goto and Nagumo try and fail to communicate their feelings for one another in a very restrained episode as thick with long-stewing emotions as it is empty space. Of course, the very next episode has half the cast get stuck in the sewer labyrinth underneath their base and there’s a bunch of Wizardry references. Oh, Oshii.

The Patlabor movies fully lean into this melancholy and uncertainty, and it’s a welcome evolution for the series. The first movie still ends with an all-out action set piece in a half-built mecha factory that stands in for the Tower of Babel, but the second one stays serious the whole time through, going as far as pivoting to a more realistic artsyle. It’s a challenging film. The politics are all-encompassing but fairly straightforward, as Oshii effectively infodumps a presentation on the postwar history of the JSDF throughout. Instead, what the makes the movie so difficult is its willingness to face the end of an era – the Cold War is over, the bubble economy has popped, and the former members of SV2 have all gone their separate ways. The conditions that have created Patlabor, both internal and external to the show, have dissipated. And the movie makes it clear by having the military stage a raid on SV2’s headquarters, tearing their Labors to shreds with gunfire in a beautifully animated act of desecration.

After watching her be a lovable mecha dweeb for 50 episodes, it hurts a bit to hear Noa Izumi say that she doesn’t want to be that girl obsessed with robots for the rest of her life! These characters are growing in such a way that will remove them from the focus of the narrative, and it’s a movie about letting go just as much as it is about looking towards an uncertain personal and national future. I love Miyazaki’s Porco Rosso, but the fact that Oshii put this out just one year later paints a delicious contrast between the two directors with regards to escapism versus reality with regards to militarism. There's some great interviews from the era where they're just taking potshots at each other about all this.

They didn't stop hanging out for any particular reason. It wasn't sudden; there was no fight. They just faded, gradually, when minutes in between messages turned to hours turned to days turned to weeks turned to their last messages without them even realizing. When seeing each other at Terces meetings turned to never at all because Pietro was gone and there were no Midnight Sun updates. When Yo-Yoji backpacked through Europe with his family for a summer and he stopped sending post cards by the third week. When he moved across town just before Freshman Year started and enrolled in a different high school. Like they never knew each other at all.

"You're using the term 'objective' very loosely and very, very incorrectly here," Max-Ernest says.

"My opinions are always objective," She throws in as an offhand comment before continuing, brushing him off. "Anyways, objectively, Spider-Man is the best superhero."

Cass gives him a look. "Of all the superheroes yo choose, you pick Ant-Man?"

"You wouldn't know how cool Ant-Man is; you haven't read all the comics."

Cass and Daniel started reading Marvel comic books together after he got her hooked with the latest Spider-Man movie, and even though he's probably read hundreds and she's only read maybe 10, she's adamant that Spider-Man is the all-time best superhero (which he is).

"It's called The Amazing Spider-Man for a reason."

He rolls his eyes. "You can't use the mkvied as an argument if you've literally only seen one."

"Oh, whatever. You know I'm right."

He does. He just wanted to argue because what else are (step) brothers for, right?

"This seems like kind of an unfair argument. You're not even taking DC into account. Batman is awesome," Glob says. They're coming up on their lockers now.

Cass scoffs. "You're automatically wrong if you're trying to compare DC to Marvel."

She and Daniel laugh as Glob angrily rambles about how DC is as good as Marvel and how it's his opinion and it's as valid as hers. She twists her combination into her lock; Max-Ernest distractedly does the same next to her, invested deeply in a book on the history of Mayan civilizations.

"Come on, play nice. What's in it for me?" It comes from down the hallway. She'd recognize that voice anywhere.

She's the first one to react, her head snapping up. A wave of panic washes over her as she sees him. A mad sense of danger hits her—they're strangers now. A stranger she knows everything about. Her chest is tight. Her heart hurts.

"Is that Yo-Yoji?" Her voice is even but her face is almost terrified. It's fight or flight but he's got her uncharacteristically frozen. She leapt into action confronted with lions but loses all sense of reality seeing him again.

Daniel looks up now. "Holy shit, it is! Haven't seen him in, what—?"

"A year," Cass finishes, still staring at Yo-Yoji like she's staring at a car crash. He's got his hands in his pockets as he looks down at a girl, smiling as she talks. His hair is it's natural black again with green angel ring highlights. "Who's that girl with him?" Just as she asks that, he leans down and kisses her. She swallow down the acidic taste of vomit in the back of her throat.

"Looks like his girlfriend," Max-Ernest says, finally putting his book away.

Glob peeks past everyone. "Call him over." He starts waving his hands. "Hey, Yo-Yoji!" he calls.

Yo-Yoji glances up. There's an amused look on his face at first and he waves back. Then his eyes find Cass'. His hand goes limp; his wave slows. He's not even quite sure what he's feeling, or why he's surprised to see her with her friendgroup. They didn't break apart—he broke apart from them.

He says something to his girlfriend and then he's walking towards them. He feels heavy under the weight of Cass' eyes tracking him the whole time. "Hey, guys!" he says. "Hey, Cass." His voice is softer.

She doesn't reply, keeps staring, face tense. He feels lanky and awkward, wipes his clammy hands on his jeans.

"How've you been, Yo-Yoji?" Max-Ernest asks.

"I don't go by 'Yo-Yoji' anymore, actually. It's just 'Yoji'."

Cass rolls her eyes. "Of course you do," she spits. To her, it's like he's turning his back on their past, on who they were. Like saying he's too good for it all now. Maybe that's why he left them.

His chest tightens, his lungs sort of just . . . stop. He feels hollow; she shelled him out.

An uncomfortable silence settles over the moment. It's unbearably loud, like water pressure, or nails on a chalkboard.

He swallows. "So, um . . . how've you—" Cass slams her locker close, her jaw clenched, and pushes past him with enough force he stumbles back. His eyes follow her, watching her leave. He sighs. "I'm not exactly surprised but . . . why is she so pissed at me?"

Daniel shrugs. "No clue."

Yoji looks over at Max-Ernest expectantly. Max-Ernest's face goes red. "What?"

Yoji widens his eyes, making an exasperated face. ". . . Well? Do you know?"

"No?" It comes out as more of a question.

"You're her best friend. You know her better than anyone."

"I've never know why Cass does anything she does. She's just . . . Cass."

It gets tired and old very quickly, trying to get her to talk to him. He waits outside her classes, follows her to her locker, begs and pleads and tries to carry conversations and all she does is keep quiet and state right through him. He even sat down at their lunch table with his girlfriend when Glob called him over but she stood and left instantly, and so Daniel followed after her, and Yoji glumly picked at his food, feeling defeated.

Cass is in her bed now, sitting cross-legged. Daniel is spinning in her wheelie chair but he stops pretty quickly because it makes him motion sick. It's 11:00 PM.

"What's with you and Yoji?" he asks, messing with a news article on her wall of horrors.

She makes a face at the lack of the extra "Yo" in his name. "Nothing," She says, maybe more aggressively than she intended.

"Sureeee," he drags out, "that's why you wouldn't talk to him all day, right?"

"It's just—ughhh." She groans and flips back on her bed.

"He hasn't done anything wrong. It wouldn't kill you to be nice, you know. Or, like, normal, at the very least."

"He's been back one day and you're already defending him over me? Your sister?"

He bites back a laugh. "How come I'm only your brother when it's convenient?"

She sees an out now. "'Cause you don't think Spider-Man is the best superhero."

"Don't change the subject." She sighs, rolls her eyes.

Then there's a tap on her window. And another. And another. She sits up. "What the fuck?" She pushes off her bed and walks to her window, pushes it open, leans out. "Ow! she exclaims. A pebble, square in between her eyes, like Goliath.

"Shit, sorry!"

She looks down. It's Yo-Yoji. Her stomach feels unsettled. "Jesus! Stalker, much?"

"Can we talk?" 

"No." She starts to walk away despite Daniel quietly protesting.

"Please, Cass—" His voice cracks and she freezes in her tracks. He takes in a deep breath to regain his composure. "Please, just talk to me."

She comes back to the window, hands on the sill. She drops her head, licks her lip. She can't bring herself to meet his eyes as she says, "Fine. I'll be down." She turns around to walk out her door and finds Daniel smiling ear-to-ear all giddy. She rolls her eyes. "Shut up."

A gust of wind hits her as she open the sliding glass door. She tucks herself deep into her sweater and stuffs her hands into her pockets. Yo-Yoji's standing there awkwardly, staring at his feet as he shuffles them.

"What do you want?" she asks. Her face is straight if not tense but her fingernails are digging into her palms in her pockets and her heart is beating so fast.

His head snaps up; there's hope on his face and she has to twist her head away to not let that look affect her.

"To talk."

"You said that already." She's still not looking at him. 

He let's out a heavy sigh, drags his hands down his face. "Cass, please. What did I do that was so wrong? You're the only one that's even mad at me!"

She's tensing up now, and it's building up inside her like a slow drip. Her stomach twists. Her ears are turning red. She crosses her arms and grasps them right. He's still rambling; the anger is still filling her like an overflowing sink.

"You're ignoring like we never knew each other at all—"

"You left!" she finally snaps. Her arms go flailing out and she turns to look at him. "I'm angry because you left! You stopped texting. You went to Europe without saying anything, left two postcards from France and then disappeared. You left! You left me!"

Silence washes over them, wind rustling trees in the background. She's staring through him again and he can't decide if her prefers that or her not looking at him at all.

"You didn't text me either," he says after a few moments.

Silence again.

There are tears welling in her eyes. "Is she your girlfriend?"

His face twists in confusion. "What?"

"That girl you were with. Is she your girlfriend?"

Yo-Yoji chews on the inside of his cheek. "Yes," he breathes.

She rolls her eyes and shakes her head, tongues the inside of her cheek. She scoffs—it's almost a laugh. "What am I even doing here?" It's a whisper, mostly to herself. She begins to turn to leave.

He reaches out and grabs her wrist to stop her. "Cass, don't go. I lost you once, I can't lose you again."

She scoffs. "You didn't lose me." There's almost a sliver of hope on his face. "You left." She rips her hand from his. His face drops. A tear rolls down her cheeks.

He's taking in shaky breaths. His eyes search her face for any inclination as to what she's feeling under her constant cold exterior of anger. "Why do you care so much if Grace is my girlfriend?"

She looks away, moonlight bouncing off her skin in a blue-ish glow as she looks at the trees lining the wall along her backyard. "I don't."

He makes an exasperated face. "Yes, you do! You obviously do! You can't even look at me! We don't see each other for a year and the thing you're all upset about is my girlfriend? That's such bullshit! What, do you just not like her or something? 'Cause that would be totally unfair since you've never even me—"

"You were mine first!" she snaps. She'd chewed on the inside of her cheek so hard she swore she drew blood. It was too much to keep inside anymore. And now it was out, heavy in between them, hanging cold and still like the moon in the inky black sky.

Yo-Yoji stills. Crouches back. Blinks. Breathes. Opens his mouth to speak. Falls short. Cass' heart rattles up her throat; he looks like he's short-circuiting. "What?" he whispers. "I—what? You . . . you liked me?"

She shrugs, shrinking into herself. ". . . Yeah," she says, voice trembling.

His vision is going blurry with tears. "Wh—" He rolls his lips into his mouth. "Why didn't you say anything?"

"And get rejected and ruin our friendship?"

His expression is soft and sad, defeated. ". . . I liked you back."

Her chest hollows out as the ever familiar feeling of nausea twists itself into a dizzying coil in her stomach. Another tears slips as she shakes her head slowly and clenched her jaw. Her eyes are mean, betrayed. "You liked me?!" She means it to come out angry but instead it comes out in trembling, astonished gasps, almost sobs. "How long?"

He smiles sadly. "The three point rule."

She takes in a bitter, shuddering breath. The three point rule. They were 12. "And you didn't say anything?!" she all but yells, voice squeaking.

"I thought you knew!" His voice goes quiet, gentle, unsteady. "I thought you knew, Cass."

He watches pain crods her face before it scrunches up and she dips her head, index finger and thumb spread across her eyes. She let's out a broken sob. He feels compelled to hold her but can't bring himself to even move. She takes in a deep breath and wipes away her tears, looks up at him strongly. "Go home, Yoji."

She's turning around and walking away when he grabs her wrist hard and pulls her back, spinning her back around. "What the—" Her protests are muffled against the pressure of his kiss.

She's stiff for a second from the shock before she's loosening up and melting into him as his hands hold either side of her face tenderly. Her hands lay flat against his chest.

The pull away is slow and delicate. He follows her the entire way and breathes her in before she stumbles back, dazed and lightheaded. He drops his hands awkwardly to his sides and she stuffs her hands back into her pockets. She gulps then laughs. He grins, looking down at her warmly.

"Um . . . it's"—Cass' ears are reddening, stuttered breathless laughing coming in between words—"it's getting late. I should, you know, head back inside . . ."

Yo-Yoji nods. "I'll text you!"

She nods meekly and heads for the door. He watches her leave, doesn't himself until she's back inside and has closed the sliding door, 'til he can't see her anymore.

"What's he saying?" Daniel asks excitedly, practically jumping on top of Cass to try and read the texts over her shoulder.

"Ow, get off!" she whisper-yells, rolling over to lay on her back instead of her stomach to get him off her.

It's 1 AM. They're in Daniel's room because he has the cool LED straps running along his floorboards, currently purple.

"He said—hey!" He snatches the phone from her hands and she instantly shoots up. "What the fuck, dude?!"

He ignores her, reading aloud. "'If I'm being honest, I never did get over you. I don't think I ever could.' Oh my god." He looks up at her, mouth agape and eyes wide. "Oh my god. Oh my god! Oh my god?!" he repeats.

She huffs and rolls her eyes, takes her phone back, all with an attitude. But her ears are red and her stomach is fluttering. She chews her lip in concentration as she types her reply. She hits send after editing her message a few times.

"Ok, I said—" Her breath hitches in her throat as Yo-Yoji's response comes in almost instantly. "I can't say it out loud." She sticks her phone out for Daniel to read himself. He leans forward and squints his eyes past the bright light of her phone screen.

Daniel's wide eyes flicker from the screen to her to the screen to her again. "Oh my god! You're gonna say yes, right?"

It's the next day. Cass and Daniel are exhausted. Max-Ernest is going on about the health benefits of a good night's sleep and why they should've gone to bed earlier. They're at their lockers.

"Max-Ernest, we get it!" Cass complains, yawns as she shuts her locker close and presses her head against it.

Max-Ernest makes a face. "I was just trying to tell you that it's really important you sleep well, especially being a survivalist, and—"

She sighs. "I know, Max-Ernest. Thank you, I appreciate it, that's enough now," she says, taking a softer approach. She turns around and gives him a tired smile. "I don't need a lecture. I need, like, speed, or something."

"I need to die," Daniel mutters, resting his head on Cass' shoulder. His eyelids are heavy and he can barely keep his eyes open.

"Do you want some?" Glob offers a sip of his energy drink with way too much sugar and even more caffeine—definitely more than a regular coffee.

Cass scrunches her face in disgust. "I'll pass." Daniel, on the other hand, all but lunges towards it. She rolls her eyes playfully.

"Is this better? It's just iced coffee. No extra anything 'cause I know you wanna avoid weird chemicals and stuff." He looks to her right: it's Yo-Yoji offering her a coffee cup with her name on it. Literally.

"Lifesaver," she mumbles sleepily, taking it and then a sip. Yo-Yoji throws his arm around her shoulder, pulls her into him to kiss her temple.

 Max-Ernest stares wide-eyed and mouth agape. Blinks. "What the fuck."

Cass smirks to herself. "What?"

"When did this happen?!"

"Last night. Long story," Daniel answers, arguing with Glob over the energy drink. Max-Ernest looks even more confused. Yo-Yoji laughs but doesn't say anything, covers it up by taking a sip of his coffee which does have extra sweeteners and artificial flavors because he doesn't care about weird chemicals and stuff.

"Are we really gonna keep pretending we're surprised? They've been a 'will they, won't they?' since middle school," Glob chimes in.

Max-Ernest brushes the comment off. "What is the point of being your best friend if you won't tell me things like this?!"

Cass smiles as he keeps rambling on and on, Yo-Yoji's hand on her shoulder tracing idle circles. Everything feels like it's back to normal.

I love all the Godzilla movies, I've seen all of the modern ones made in America, when Minus one was released on streaming services, I raced to find a place to watch it on 😭 "

Godzilla: Minus One Review (SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!!)

I'm gonna do Pros and Cons, First the Pros

Godzilla's Design

Holy moly this design, I love all the Godzilla's with a few exceptions (Son of Godzilla), but this one is just WOW.

The way his dorsal plates can retract and also pop out of his skin was such a unique touch that I really appreciated. Also the way they animated him, very different from the other movies, He seems terrifying and just like an apex predator.

Plot line

Dude this movie had me on the edge of my seat. 5 minutes into the movie and we see Godzilla already??? Thank you so much??? I love you???? And we can even tell that it's a very small Godzilla, not fully evolved but still terrifying, I loved the idea of him being able to grow stronger and evolve.

It follows Shiki's story and his battle with PTSD and the guilt of those mens deaths and the guilt of being the only Kamikaze pilot that is alive.

The ending made me cry, but then that one scene where we find out Noriko is alive, which I thought was like INSANE!!!!!!!

10/10 Story, So fucking good, I will be rewatching this movie ( already have at the time of writing this)

Characters

Shiki himself is a great main character, but the side characters really bring me in tbh

Yuki Yamada being one of my favorite actors really sold the deal on Shiro's character for me, he is such a goofball and I can feel his passionate soul throught the screen lol.

Akiko and Noriko are genuinely lovely to watch, Noriko is a perfect mother despite the circumstances.

ALSO YOJI????? HELLO SAILOR!!!!!!

Sound Design

Holy shit it felt like I was THERE

The loud bangs followed by ear piercing silence that starts to come up to the surface but still somehow sound so far away, only for it to hit you like a punch in the face

Hearing one of the characters absolutely SCREAM his lungs out in pain while other noises begin to drown him out

I want to marry who directed the sound in this movie

Other things I'm too lazy to seperate into other categories

Very Anti-War which slayssss

End scene where Godzilla isn't actually dead, great twist

The atomic breath reveal (Chefs kiss man holy shit)

The CGI is one of the best I've seen, they were able to capture so many scenes perfectly. Also Godzilla's expressions, that shit made me so giddy.

1. I’d be the hero! I want to protect all the people I love; Ita, Yoji, Hidz, Dr. Akiyama…I-I’ve been trained by my brothers to be a protector of the Earth Realm, so I’ll do my very best to keep everyone safe!

2. T-the Nine Hells are terrifying. Imagine: an angel falling and getting trapped in those realms, all those demons eying me ravenously….!!

3. YES!! I love happy endings!! In an ideal world, everyone would be happy and live in harmony. No fighting, no wars. No bad guys trying to kill others for profit, or jealousy. A Utopia where nobody is above or below anyone else. But…I feel that’s a bit wishful, haha. Not even The Heavenly Realms are a flawless, perfect haven.
