Ongoing Series - Thai

The Rebound (Weds Gaga) ep 1 of 12 - Fuck all ya'all if you thought I had taste. MeenPing are topping this damn list because... have you any idea how LONG I have been waiting for a real sports centered BL starring at least one boy who actually played the flipping sport? My whole damn life. You ready for me to go into euphoric splooges all over your screens? I don't think you are. SUFFER! And now some splooging:

It’s off to a great start. Thank you, Rebound, for being exactly what I wanted. By which I mean Meen has his shirt off literally in the first two minutes of the show. Also it’s a bit of a childhood sweethearts reunion romance. There’s nothing wrong with this beginning. Fantastic. For a change, I even enjoy the intro music. Golf is directing MeenPing this time, so maybe something magical will happen. Frank is aging so pretty!!! How nice for all of us. Even the bb play is good. It’s a proper sports BL. I’m so damn happy right now. 

Wandee Goodday (Sat YT) ep 9 of 12 - I’m so tired of Ter, but everything else was lovely. Also they are SUCH boyfriends. 

Sunset X Vibes (Sat iQIYI) ep 3 of 12 - They are so cute in these roles. I don’t know why, I just like their vibe better here than in the previous show. (And I really enjoyed Big Dragon at the start.) This show is a lot more classic romance and kind of pat because of that. I do hope the ingénue character gets some kind of additional development and talent. But even if it stays mundane, these two have the chemistry to carry it. So I suspect I’ll keep enjoying it regardless. I am mildly intrigued by the spice of the PNR element, so I hope they run with that a bit more. I suspect they will have to, to extend the plot for 12 eps.

My Stand-In (Fri iQIYI) ep 10 of 12 - Ah Ming... famous last words. This one just makes me sigh a lot and whimper sadly. I don’t know where they’re going with this plot or how they’re gonna resolve it. Joe finally being the asshole Ming deserves is a lot of fun though (double entendre intended). I’m scared but it did make me cry... a lot. (That's fine, I'm a sap.)  

Imma say this because no one else has. Wardrobe is unilaterally terrible in this show. I mean Thailand is notoriously bad in general but this show, nash.

We Are Cute (Weds iQIYI) ep 13 of 16 - They are so fucking adorable. And so flirty! Also a crying kiss? My favorite! Chain’s little moment of "Cupid shoot thyself" was epic. ("Physician heal thyself" but for the BL world?) Honestly, I could watch a whole show about these two...

The Trainee (Sun YouTube) ep 1 of 12 - How does Gun still look like he’s just out of high school? Madness. Does the set for the print shop that he’s working in at the beginning remind anybody else of Mork’s dad’s place in ‘Cause He’s My Boy? I swear GMMTV has about 3 sets they rotate through.

To be brutally honest, I was not looking forward to the show at all. No idea why. OffGun aren’t my most favorite OG pair, but I respect them for their longevity, optics, acting shops, and enduring brand. Maybe I just needed more of a gap from Cooking Crush?

Whatever, I was absolutely riveted by this first episode. I’m enjoying The Trainee a lot. Like, a lot a lot.

My Love Mix-Up Th (Fri YT) ep 4 of 12 - This version did the "clear up of the inciting miscommunication" in such a sweet achey way. Frankly that "ache of first love" really plays to G4's strengths as a pair. This was a good ep and I’m now starting to enjoy this one for its own sake and get some distance from the JBL version. It's just there is A LOT of good stuff coming out of Thailand right now.

Love Sea (Sun iQIYI) ep 3 of 10 - I was inspired to write a Shakespearean style sonnet in this week's trash watch. Mame seems to believe that no character can have depth without suffering. And I found this episode both boring and rushed at the same time. Trash watch here. (This week's trash watch also VERY delayed.)

Knock Knock Boys (Thurs Gaga) ep 6 of 12 - It’s eminently missable... so I missed it this week in order to get this weekly update out. Next week will be a two in one. 

Only Boo! (Sun YT) ep 12fin - Okay, that’s it, I guess?

Summary:

An idol romance about a sunshine boy who dances good and wants to be a star and a reserved food stand vendor. Other side of the tracks, grumpy/sunshine pair who fall in love but, of course, to be an idol baby boy can't date. It wasn’t particularly bad, it wasn’t particularly good either. 7/10

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

I Hear the Sunspot AKA Hidamari ga Kikoeru (Japan Weds Gaga) Ep 1 of 10 - A new series adaptation of beloved yaoi I Hear the Sunspot (first adaptation was feature film Silhouette of Your Voice 2017).

I expected the soundscapes in this one to be fantastic, but I didn’t expect the filming to be something special too. But it really is. I’m not gonna lie, I'm nervous about this show because I love the manga and was disappointed by the film, but we were off to a really good start. First names already? So cute. I love them.

Takara's Treasure AKA Takara No Vidro (Japan Mon Gaga) ep 1 of 10 - Shy awkward Taishin goes to a Tokyo university in order to reunite with Takara, a stranger who consoled him over the loss of a parrot the year prior. He finally gets a chance to express his gratitude but is given the cold shoulder. (My thoughts this weekend's round up)

I can't believe Japan is holding it down for the non Thai BL. I mean to say.... JAPAN!!! What alt reality are we living in? It being Japan, I'm scared of the ending.

It's airing but...

Blue Boys is still going on and I'm still enjoying it (despite the cheating) but I don't know when it drops or where it's going, so I will report in at the end. When they tell me it's ended.

The Last Time (Thai Fri YT?) - Convoluted story of loss and possible reincarnation or something. Can't find it.

OMG Vampire (Thai Sun ???) 10 eps - I've put the search on hold for and y'all can let me know if it's worth tracking down once it ends?

7/10 Century of Love (Thai Gaga) 10 eps - trailer here, DaouOffroad are back, this time as fated mates in a quasi historical paranormal moment. San has spent many lifetimes waiting for his lost beloved, to reincarnate from her death a century ago. But if he fails to find her within this century's time window, he will succumb to a tragic death. And this time she's a boy. Very much Director Who Buys Me Dinner meets First Love Again, hopefully better than both. I love this pair and think they can handle the premise, it's whether the storytelling is up to the challenge. I'm curious to see but I have reservations.

7/26 4 Minutes (Thai Netflix or iQIYI?) - Great is a university student from Faculty of Business and the son of a wealthy business owner. Out of the blue, he gains the supernatural power to see four minutes into the future.

7/29 Battle of the Writers (Thai ????) - trailer here, TutorYim return and while I adore them, I really hope this is better than Middleman's Love. Won't be hard. However: that premise! Ugh. Something something authors fighting - save me. Why don't writers understand that nothing is more boring than writers?

We stand a lap sit on this blog, but I think this is my first lap spin! I adored it! (Sunset X Vibes)

It's fun to watch them follow the original narrative but with these cute little Thai twists. Sometimes these are shifted for language reasons, sometimes for cultural, and sometimes I think just to draw a clear distinction from the JBL. I'm not mad about any of it. (My Love Mix Up)

Linguistic corner!

I love this way of putting the translation. Usually, in Thai, the phrase used means "he's my happiness" (sounds like: kwamsook). To use sabai is different. Sabai more ubiquitous (sabai is one of the most commonly used phrases in Thailand) but also so different from the usual phrase we hear in ThBL at this moment. Thus, this execution is special, particularly from a doctor. I'm not quite sure how to put it but sabai can also be translated as feeling well, as in, not ill. So there is a way of looking at Wandee saying Yak is both his peace of mind and good for his health and well being.

my stand in episode 1 thoughts, feelings, etc.

OHOHOOO FINALLY. FINALLY I FEEL INSANE ABOUT A SHOW AGAIN. poom phuripan my absolute beloved, i've missed you so fucking much.

the show really eases you into everything and so far i don't mind the back and forth, i think it's interesting to see the direct consequences and THEN the story of how we got here. i don't know if my opinion on that will change later but for right now it's really pleasing me. i also really like this gradual introduction we're getting into everything and the sort of thriller/mystery vibe to it all. it's giving me some very loose/vague manner of death vibes.

i immediately don't like the vibes of tong or wut but i'm reserving any real accusations until later, but i'm def side eyeing them. i've got my eye on you two.

it really took my brain some getting used to to understanding the joe we're seeing is joe's consciousness and everyone else is seeing the joe that was shown in his reflection in the hospital (i've never seen vice versa or many other shows that do this, forgive me) but once i wrapped my head around it i actually quite like it. mostly bc it means i still get to see a lot of poom.

anyway - thus far this has one of my favorite romance tropes; guy who is used to being treated badly/ignored and man who has too much love to give (to someone who may or may not deserve it, judgement withstanding on that rn.) joe is just such a heart eyed fool and i'm so glad to see poom in another role of lovesick, unfairly attractive, dork. it's a role he plays so well and he immediately endears you to joe so fucking much.

throughout most of the episode i was like ooh this is a bummer but the angst isn't too bad. and then. AND THEN.

ming coming over to joe's house and making a move on him, again, from the perspective of behind joe - where he looks so much like tong. the lamenting about him being a virgin and joe offering himself up to him. and then ming turning him back around to face the mirror. this way he looks so much like tong, he can pretend it's tong, and yet at the same time joe's face is right there, reflected back in the mirror, inescapable. i'm fucking eating this up, finally some good fucking food.

idk i'm probably not touching on everything i want to, it's been a long ass time since i've done one of these, but this is just what immediately comes to mind. now time to go make a gifset lmao.

It says so much about Joe that he's never even considered the idea of being the main character.

I'm actually finding it rather fascinating at how I'm connecting with Joe on so many levels.

There the personal tendencies as a people pleaser, to just go with the flow, never make a fuss, to trust people and take them at their word.

There is something about moving through this world as a person who genuinely wants the best for others, we are just never quite prepared for the person who thinks only of themselves.

But there's also something about Joe's experience that resonates with me as a woman. Always being expected to take the backseat as a matter of course, that you have no right to complain, that your wants are never going to be as important as the wants of those with more cultural/societal power around you, that you will be criticized if you do the thing and criticized if you don't.

This show is giving me a lot to think about.

My Stand-In

I love a deranged character, and Ming delivered that in spades. This could have been a story about revenge, but I liked it better for being a story about learning from your mistakes and granting second chances. Ming was still deranged, but at least he learned that Joe deserved to be treated better, and Joe learned to demand it.

Listen. Me🤝Taiwan = shipping brothers. In all seriousness, though, this show was beautiful. The love and care these three siblings have for each other was so wonderful. It felt like being invited into their home, and I was a very satisfied guest.

We Are

I can't be objective or normal about this show. Every complaint I've seen about it fell on my deaf ears. This is my family. Phum and Peem are my parents even though they are half my age. These friends and their love stories made my 2024 brighter and filled me with so much joy that I will take them with me in my pocket wherever I go, and pull them out when I'm feeling lonely so I can remember, I'm not alone.

4 Minutes

This show probably won't age well, but watching it week to week as it was airing was an incredible experience. Thinking about, theorizing, and yelling on Tumblr about it ate up 8 weeks of my life, and I loved every minute of it. The acting was aces, particularly Fuaiz, who really dug his claws into his character, Tonkla, and stole every scene he was in.

Let Free The Curse Of Taekwondo

Korea, my beloved! There is something about the repressive culture of Korea that really gets me in their BL. For a people who keep it very demure, very mindful, adding a layer by piling on angst around sexuality hurts in the best way. LFTCOT embodied that feeling perfectly. It was the sweetest ache. A hurt so good.

Takara No Vidro

I'm not going to lie. Part of what made me even finish this post is this show. I haven't seen it on many lists, and it was my favorite from Japan this year. Watching Takara's obsessive love for Taishan slowly reveal itself was a true pleasure. Takara's subtle yearning, his repression, his holding back as a punishment for wanting too much, and his fear of becoming a monster in love were so, so delicious. I thought Iwase Yoji portrayed him beautifully, and I loved every minute of this delightful little show.

I Saw You In My Dream

WeTV knocked it out of the park this year, but this one was my favorite of their offerings. All of their shows had couples with great communication, really good examples of enthusiastic consent, and really wonderful depictions of friendships and friends groups being supportive and as important as romantic love in their character's lives. ISYIMD gave me four boys who were part brothers, part friends, and part something more. Their love stories were held back by fear - fear of losing the love and relationships they already had for and with each other. Ai's premonition dreams are the catalyst that makes it possible for him and Yu to finally realize their feelings for each other. I love a genuine friends to lovers story, and this one was beautiful.

The Only One

I don't mind an open ending or a story left unfinished, so this show didn't leave me feeling disappointed the way it did some others. I still hope we get a S2 and the conclusion of Jiang Tian and Sheng Wang's love story, but even if this is all I ever get, I'm satisfied. Again, I'm a sucker for complicated love, so two boys falling in love despite their parents also being romantically involved was always going to get me. Watching them navigate their growing attachment to each other, their fear and anticipation at finding a kindred spirit, and then realizing they want each other in an impossible way was the most delicious angst.

Cherry Magic TH

The original Cherry Magic is a BL cornerstone, so imagine my surprise when I walked away from this show feeling like Thailand outdid the original. And GMMTV Thailand at that! Tay and New have great chemistry, but it's their familiarity with one another, and their obvious love and care for each other that I think really made this adaptation shine. Karan was the best green flag, and it was a joy watching him get all the love and devotion he deserved from Achi. Achi's journey of self-discovery and self-love was beautiful, too. It was an absolute joy watching these two fall in love.

Love Sick 2024

Full disclosure, I never watched the original Love Sick, and I probably never will. What I loved about this show was its perfect depiction of teen angst. These kids were all hormonal messes -- navigating parental expectations, sexuality crises, crushes, and academic pressures. They really were love sick with all the angst and melodrama that entails. Not a single one of them knew how to talk to each other. Their insecurities were bigger than Texas, and their lack of communication was often frustrating, but all of that just made everything more realistic. These were children, navigating love the way children often do -- badly 😂. I loved that the show cast actual kiddos (no one in the cast is over 19), and all of them were phenomenal. I can't wait to see more from them in the future, but especially Almond, who played one of the main leads, Phun. He's an excellent little actor, and I'm excited to follow his career in the future.

Ongoing Series - Thai

Wandee Goodday (Sat YT) ep 7 of 12 - There is so much to love about this pair. But one of the things I truly adore is what great communicators they are about what they want & need as friends & as lovers. As boyfriends? Not so much. But the way they can (and do and did) communicate speaks well to their ability to communicate in the future, once they have resolved the inevitable doom the BL gods will reign down upon us over the next 3-4 eps. I guess what I am say is... these two are gonna be awesome husbands.

The break up was sad but inevitable.

Yay for a crying kiss. I do so love a crying kiss! 

Can we talk about the fact that all that tension was worth it?

Excellent kiss all round from GreatInn. Possibly one of the best of the year. Their only issue in winning this category in 2024 is that they're up against OffGun, TayNew, and JimmySea, not to mention BillyBabe... and MosBank coming soon. But I gotta say, for a new pair? Fantastic work boys.

My Stand-In (Fri iQIYI) ep 8 of 12 - I literally spent this whole show saying “Oh, Poor Joe!” Which is now the actual name of his character: Poor Joe. He's like the country music sad sack. How much is this narrative gonna keep kicking him while he's down?  

Sunset X Vibes (Sat iQIYI) ep 1 of 12 - Star Hunter + MosBank + a beloved familiar face? You ready? Let's go. I got a lot to say.

Unexpected supernatural historical paranormal mythological Sign-esk elements happening in our dream sequence opening. I’m not mad about it. But I do think it’s going to be mishandled in the dubious hands of Star Hunter. My BLabies, no matter what else, with Star Hunter we can rest assured there will be chaos and narrative mess. And now, lucky us, there will be a supernatural mess. But at least it will be sexy and high heat.

Honestly, I'm not worried about MosBank and I know what to expect from Star Hunter,. So we're all on the same page.

Meanwhile, enter a cute side couple (normal for this studio). WAIT a second I know that face! That's Tenon of PitchBank fame (side couple, and only good thing about, Golden Blood). I’m sad to see his pair busted, but delighted to see him pop up again in a BL.

Tenon appreciation time: He kisses beautifully everyone, and he is a killer eye-emoter. We are in for a real treat with this actor. (Especially if we get to a place in the narrative where he pines. OH PLEASE MAKE HIM PINE.)

Okay back to the show. I love Tenon but I also LOVE his infiltrating, wicked smart, younger brother character. This role is great for him. I adore an industrial spy. I enjoy a rich boy pretending to be an intern in his family's company (yes it's a trope, just not common in BL). Excellent work Thailand. No notes.

In conclusion?

It’s a cheesy silly office BL and I am enjoying it immensely because I have no expectations. So don't burst my bubble. Star Hunter is bound to do that on its own without tumblr's help.

We Are Cute (Weds iQIYI) ep 11 of 16 - Oh my God they are all so cute! I love the beginning bit when Peem was feeling down and Phum tried to cheer him up. Ridiculously charming. All the sides were super adorbs too. The actual name of this show is "We Are Cute". Meanwhile, Kluen = the only boy in a BL ever to take his unfinished drink with him? I like him even more now. 

My Love Mix-Up Th (Fri YT) ep 2 of 12 - New take on the umbrella trope to be trapped under a parasol together. NO SINGING. Honestly? I am not loving this as much as I really wanted to love it. It's the middle of the rankings for good reason. I do like the idea of historical Cinderfella BL though. Why isn't that what I'm watching? The play with in a play is a dangerous trope to deploy, it only distracts my with attractive possibilities. 

Love Sea (Sun iQIYI) ep 2 of 10 - I'm gonna try to cycle back to ending this rap-up week on Saturdays, which means the recap for this episode will be in next week's weekly (so to speak). Meanwhile, I am doing a Trash watch on this show. Hopefully that will get updated tomorrow.

Knock Knock Boys (Thurs Gaga) ep 4 of 12 - It’s fun enough. Kind of a pulpy lark. Best + Seng = a surprisingly good match.

Only Boo! (Sun YT) ep 10 of 12 - Good kiss from the sides. No surprises there. The main’s kissing was fine too, I guess. I like that they had a genuine struggle with being an idol and not being able to date. It’s nice to see that depicted on screen in a BL. I wish we had a bit more of a montage around the rise & success of Moo's boy group. But I understand the money in play for this kind of show prohibits that. All in all? It’s fine.

At 25:00 in Akasaka AKA 25 Ji Akasaka de (Japan Thurs Gaga) ep 9 of 10 - Oof. This ep was painful. So much awkward desperation and confusion. Oh Japan, must you?

Crazy to be in a place and time where there is no other noted non-Thai BLs airing. Not even from Korea. What is going on? Are we in 2020 all over again? Please no.

ARGH could Monster Next Door please just start airing. I am SO tired of waiting for Big to lead out a BL. It should have happened years ago. *grumbles in chronic second lead syndrome*

Tong and Joe, a story of alter ego.

It's not a coincidence that Tong and Joe have so much similarities. Their story is inherently linked together.

Firstly, because they look alike. Many characters in the series already pointed out how they are both the same person from behind.

However, the physical similarity stops when you look at them from the front. Tong and Joe don't look the same. Tong is a confident man who comes of as slightly arrogant and full of himself. It shows on his smile and the way he acts, which reflects on his face when he is smirking at a comment, for example. Joe, on the opposite, is a calm and reserved person. He is also a humble man, and always happy to help, which also shows on is posture when talking with someone.

Secondly, they are both in the same industry. In their job, they have to pretend to be someone else. Tong is a famous actor, so we can guess he is good at pretending to be someone else. Joe has been his stand in for a long time, so we can all accept, he is good at playing Tong. That could be all. However, Tong isn't really all the time professional. He has a huge ego and sometimes doesn't want to play scenes, where a stand-in is not required. That's how, Joe could show that he is also good at playing too.

However, Tong is not ready to admit, Joe, his shadow, doesn't need to be linked to him anymore to exist. He can shine on his own. This is threatening the way he views his world. The entertainment can be a harsh place to work in. You always have to be careful because you can be replaced by someone else. I think Tong already knows that. What he didn't expect, was to be replaced by someone he always viewed as his double and not as a real other person.

It's not a coincidence Tong is dating May, Ming's sister. Especially when we know they come from a rich family. By marrying into this family, Tong will be able to secure a better place than staying as an actor because this industry could replace him easily. He could open a business and use the money he'll get from connections tied with his future wife's family. He is already feeling like his position as a famous actor is in jeopardy because Joe is having this new opportunity. This is the fear of any famous actor: competition. Joe is serious in his job, while Tong is bored.

If Tong wasn't already annoyed by Joe, discovering his stand-in is also having a relationship with Ming is really angering him. Not only, Joe is starting to get acting opportunities, but he may also be linked to the rich family he is trying to get into. Their story is similar is so many points and Tong can see it. That's why he lashed out at Joe and try to coerce him to stop everything. He wants Joe to stay at his lane. Tong sees Joe as beneath him, but deep down he also sees him as a reflection of him, his alter ego. It scares him. I feel like Tong is seeing Joe, the same way, Dorian Gray looked at his painting.
