What I love about Terry Pratchett's good characters is that they never fail you. Sam Vimes might push you towards the piss puddle for fun, or put a farting pillow under your chair, maybe tie your shoelaces while you're asleep - but he would never fuck your wife or piss into your shoes or make you miserable for no reason other than sheer "fun".
Granny Weatherwax would never say "no" to a crying for help or "please". She wouldn't betray her morals for money, some sort of respect gain or power.
So wouldn't Angua. Or Susan. Or Adora Belle. Or Carrot. Or Luggage.

god. GOD. the underlying anger in everything terry writes really IS apparent in hogfather bc fuck u mean this is how things should be? no the fuck it shouldn't. poor people shouldn't have to be satisfied with what they get, that's just fucking capitalism. i REALLY like that terry decided to use death as projection for what he thinks bc death doesn't know anything and it has to be explained to him and by it being explained to him it shows how fucking stupid those things are. bc ok here's this world where an equivalent of santa ACTUALLY exists and, because it mirrors our world, it's still unjust. santa actually fucking exists in this world and he could give ANYONE ANYTHING bc he's essentially a god and people gave him that power by making him up, BUT because ppl imagined him in a way that poor people don't get shit (like they usually do) and rich people get EVERYTHING they want, he exists like that. whereas death has seen the absolutely WORST of humanity and he STILL thinks that's bullshit and it's not how it should be, it's just how it goes. bc capitalism is always capitalism where there's money and the world will always be fucked up as long as there are oppressor to hold it up. like i just.

LIPWIG - Lip Wig - Fake Moustache
Oh you cunning goddamn Wordmaster Terry Pratchett, you
That opens another door in my head now. Can we please talk about it whether Moist, a synonym for damp, wet and watery, could be closely related to slippery, like those signs SLIPPERY WHEN WET, and therefore Slippery as in Loose Morals (wiki)
Or was it said in the first place and now I'm discovering America in my can of peaches?
god I am always thinking about how moist von lipwig fundamentally does not think himself as a real person. he's not a real person, and so none of his actions have consequences. until he is forced to be a real person and deal with the consequences of his actions (adorabelle) like. it's even in the name. lipwig is a fake mustache. he's not real he's just a character. he's always playing a character. what do you mean his actions have real consequences. he's not real. until he is.

We'll be Okay
Tumblr media
(I posted something similar on Twitter so I will here too just in case someone needs to hear it, have a little comfort)
The husbands that hold our hearts together are a story that has a happy ending. They belong together, they always have and always will. We will see it eventually too.
There isn't a single universe where they don't end up in each other's arms. And if you think of them as existing before and after the Universe has, they always find a way to each other within it and outside it too. Whatever the fate throws at them. So their story is in a way finished, they are one. And we are going to see how. One version of it. The one Terry wanted for them. The others are outlined in the many many artworks this talented fandom is sharing now for 3 and half decades. And I have a feeling will do even a long time from now.
Tumblr media
And remember, don't ever feel bad for loving something good, something beautiful. The fault here is not with you, it never is, it is entirely with someone else. Remember this if you ever fall for a wrong person, give your friendship to someone who hurts, uses you. Your love and your kindness is not diminished by someone who harms others and you are certainly not to blame for your trust. Loving things, being kind and enthusiastic and open are good qualities. We need more of this. Don't let the shadows of the world lessen your light. This is not what you deserve. This is on them.
GO3 will be made. Share your fav art. Love. Widely. (in both senses of the world)
I write (if it can be called that) tiny lil' ficlets where the husbands are happy, or talking about the things that worry them because I feel that's what they need (but is most likely what I need). Please do feel free to share and reblog with your comforts!

I'm rereading Hogfather for the first time in probably 15 years and I. Cannot believe I missed all the jokes about Hex the first time around. The "anthill inside" sticker. The ram skulls. The small religious pictures. Christ
Whoever made that post about rereading Discworld novels making you go "damn you Terry" while shaking your first at the sky, you get it

Whether it likes it or not
What a lovely thought
Granny Weatherwax and Sam Vimes wouldn’t get on at all, and they’d never admit why, but it’s because they’re too similar. They both have an internal morality more sturdy and unmovable than a mountain, they both know they contain the capacity for great evil, but keep themselves in line with self discipline the likes of which most people couldn’t dream of. They both know about the importance of choice, and of truth, and of autonomy. If either of them were able to look past their aversion to seeing their own reflection, and worked together, they’d be fucking unstoppable.
Something about two of the main Discworld series being focused on these intensely determined, stubbornly moral people just really means a lot to me. You’ve got Moist using his criminal mind to help people, and the wizards doing whatever wizards do, and Death showing kindness to people in their most vulnerable moments. And you’ve got these two, making the world a better place whether it likes it or not. It will get better, or else, they say. Or else you’ll have me to deal with.

I just had a Hypothetical Thought:
It's odd to me that Solas ends up trapped in his own prison. It's odd to me that he so readily gives a total stranger the reins in trying to fight his two escapees, Elgar'nan and Ghilan'nain.
And just now, while re-watching one of the videos posted here on tumblr (which I'm not gonna reblog, videos get reblogged AFTER game release, it's so much easier to spoil people in videos and I'm not gonna.) I wondered if he might pull a Vetinari:
"Never build a dungeon you can't get out of".
In Terry Pratchett's Guards! Guards!, the patrician of the city Ankh-Morpork gets locked up in his own dungeons. When the main character of the story, Captain Sam Vimes, ends up in the dungeon with him, he learns that Vetinari has actually made himself quite comfortable until it is safe to leave again. Vetinari tells Vimes that one should never build a dungeon they wouldn't like to live in themselves, nor should they build one they can't escape.
And I know that Trick is a Discworld reader. They've talked about several of the main characters of the series on Twitter. I know that several of the other devs are as well...they might've gotten inspired.
Look, if this is a thing that happens, I'll be fucking delighted.

If there ever was a medal for sir Pterry for a book it would be one side Thud! and other Night Watch and there would be not a single picture of Him* on some con without playing with it and spinning it so it would eventually blend into one blurry side never for anyone to see which one was better**
*Him Diamond
**because they were in fact both better
y'know having read them multiple times i don't understand why people say that Night Watch is the darkest City Watch book when Thud! is right there.
like, Night Watch is pretty grim when you focus on the inevitability of it, but throughout the book the whole like... THING of it is "being told something is inevitable, and fighting it anyway." it's a story about hope and inspiring it in others even when you're not sure you're going to make it through either way. right up until the final melee with Carcer, Vimes does what he can to forestall the inevitable, and for most of the book, he *wins.*
Thud! on the other hand is about fighting against the weight of deep ancient grudges, and the outcome of it SEEMS inevitable. Koom Valley Will Happen Again, and throughout the book there seems no way to stop it. the resolution comes right at the very end, although the book 100% earns the reveal. but it's one man and a small team fighting against bigotry and hatred and figureheads stoking war.
that's not even TOUCHING on the actual Events in the book, which include a hit squad armed with flamethrowers very nearly torching Sam Vimes' infant son to fucking death. then there's the whole thing with the Summoning Dark which keeps trying to push Vimes' rage to the point of murder, there's the part where it *succeeds* and drives him into an unstoppable berserker rage, there's people dying slowly in dark tunnels, and the Vurms which feasting on putrefied corpses.
it's also the first time we've seen Vimes in an actual Murderous rage. every time beforehand he's been angry but it's been "oh i'm gonna arrest the SHIT out of you. i might put the boot in for good measure but you're coming with ME, sunshine." but no, this time he's literally chasing down a hitman screaming "i'll kill you" over and over again.
Thud! is a properly dark book. and yet despite it's unrelenting horribleness... Love Still Wins. Love for your fellow "man." Love wins in all Pterry's books, you can tell, it shines off the page when you read them just how much that man loved humanity, warts 'n' all, but in this one it feels like it's the most optimistic ending. it's the one that goes "in spite of it all, the bigots and warmongers and the narrow minded Will Lose, because there are always people willing to go to the ends of the earth for Love, Love of one another."
i think that's why it's my favourite book in the series.
