the power of fandom is so wild because i'll go into a tv show or a book or whatever with the unshaken belief that two characters have the most undeniably palpable sexual tension in the universe and it turns out that they are canonically strangers to each other

Dear fics I started and never finished,
Dear fics I started and couldn't finish,
Dear fics written by my past self,
Dear fics never posted,
Dear fics posted without my name attached,
Dear fics that fought me to a draw,
Dear fics I forget until we cross paths again by chance,
Dear first fic,
I do still love you.
Thank you.

I just need to get it out to say:
I casually follow Captain America as a kind of blorbo-in-law, but Steve/Bucky is not strongly My Ship AND
I love Stranger Things and I suspect you could call Steve Harrington one of my good blorbos, but Steve/Eddie is not strongly My Ship AND
I watch 911 as a comfort show and I love everyone in this bar, but Buck/Eddie is not strongly my ship AND
...some days I wonder if I cannot commit to any of these ships as primary because I already have enough confusion in my life because of all. of. you. You know who you are (she says with nothing but love).
That said, I appreciate you, as my other blorbo Ted Lasso would say. I have invited this flavor of weird in through you all, and it is where I live now. And I am continually pleased that about 3/4ths of you appreciate my Leverage faves!

You guys are commenting on the fics you read right? You’re at least leaving kudos on the Astarion smut and the pairs that have less than 20 fics for them too? You’re bookmarking stories you really like that are still being updated and ones that haven’t been touched in over a year right?
You know that even the smallest interactions are like cocaine to fic writers right? You understand how important a string of emoji hearts left behind on a chapter at three am is right?? Right????
You’re treating AO3 like a community and not a content factory….right?

I love you, ship-and-let-ship. I love you, back button. I love you, block and mute. I love you, taking a deep breath and getting some water and going on a walk. I love you, appropriately tagged fics. I love you, choose not to warn. I love you, YKINMKITO.
I love you, fandom olds. I love you, fandom newbies. I love you, fan organizers and fan events. I love you, silent readers. I love you, serial commenters. I love you, "❤" comments. I love you, fan community.
I love you, comments kudos and bookmarks. I love you, people who make posts about their favorite fics. I love you, prompt lists. I love you, favorite tropes. I love you, "imagine your faves." I love you, AUs and canon-compliants and crossovers and fusion's. I love you, hyperspecific personal interests of specific authors. I love you, moodboards and icons and gif sets.

To illustrate this post by @mayahawkse I would like to visualize to you the difference:
A post in 2023:
A post in 2014:
A zoom out of the same post:
This is what a community looks like.
See how in 2023 almost all of the reblogs come from the OP, from their few hours/days in the tag search. Meanwhile in 2014 the % of reblogs from OP is insignificant, because most of the reblogs come from the reblogs within the fandom, within the micro-communities formed there. You didn't need to rely on tags, or search, or being featured. Because the community took care of you, made sure to pass the work between themselves and onto their blog and exposed their followers to it. It kept works alive for years.
It's not JUST the reblog/like ratio that causing this issue, it's the type of interaction people have. They're content with scrolling and liking the search engine, instead of actually having a reblogging relationship with other blogs in their community.
Anyways, if you want to see more content you like, the only true way to make it happen is to reblog it. Likes do not forward content in no way but making OP feel nice. Reblogs on the other hand make content eternal. They make it relevant, they make it exist outside of a fickle tumblr search that hardly works on the best of days.
If you want more of something, reblog it.

fanfic is so good bc the premise of some genres of fic are just inherently funny. I want these two grizzled crime drama protagonists to have some fucking fun for once, so they go to a water park. I dont care how i have to logic my way into them going there i dont care who has to drag them Theyre Going
