I feel like a happy little collector, collecting all the pairings. Just seeing glimpses of each character has me screaming.

When I read kotlc for the first time, I remember being slightly upset that Sophie stopped Grady from killing Brant for murdering Jolie. Then when I was rereading this part, I noticed that the main reason Sophie stops Grady is because she's protecting him from himself. She doesn't want to lose him to guilt and have him potentially lose his sanity like Alden. She's already lost her human father, and doesn't want to lose her adopted one too.

In the kotlc fandom and within the books there's a lot of joking about how oblivious Sophie is. Which is true, obviously in the books she's constantly missing signs that Keefe and Fitz like her.
Nobody seems to acknowledge that a lot of the reasons Sophie is so oblivious are because she doesn't believe she's worth having a crush on. Within the first few pages of the first book, when Fitz goes to talk to her, she immediately questions why such a cute boy would ever want to talk to her. The only thing she's confident in is her intelligence- and that's ripped away from her when she learns she's an elf and realizes she doesn't know how the world works at all. She only wears grey and tries to not stand out, and she overall doesn't think of herself very highly.
I haven't reread the series in a while, so I don't really have anything to say about the rest of book 1 through Nightfall. I can't remember anything specific to help my point, but I'll probably make another post about this when I've reread the series.
That brings me to Flashback. In the scene where Sophie and Fitz are in the reception hall at Everglen, they're discussing match lists, and Sophie thinks about the odds of her ending up on Fitz's lists. And even after all this time in the elven world, she still thinks of herself as "the weird girl with the freaky brown eyes who grew up with humans and will never fully fit into her world." By this point, she has five abilities, a lot of friends, and she knows how important she is to the world. But she still has low self-esteem. She almost starts crying in this scene because she feels so ridiculous for ever thinking Fitz could like her.
Sophie had no friends before moving to the lost cities. she grew up constantly hearing everyone's negative thoughts about her, including her teachers, classmates, and family. That'd fuck anyone up.
There's also a lot to say about how she's still an anomaly in the lost cities. But I haven't read the series in a really long time.
To sum it all up I really think Sophie's lack of confidence isn't talked about a lot, when it probably should be? It's an interesting aspect to her and I just had to say something about it.

i got my isbn today for the book. 8 months to go. my mom and i were talking about what the next steps are. i was eating trail mix, standing on one foot, phone tucked into my ear.
"yeah," i said. "the problem is that tumblr as a market is like, not something that can be studied." there's this weird wave of nostalgia and affection for this place that came up over me: how lovely we avoid consumerism. okay, it sucks as a creator. but also? keep stickin' it to 'em.
my mother made the sound at the back of her throat that i also make, the one that means i've got an idea. "you should figure out some kind of reward for presale amounts. maybe you give out poems or a mug or a signed book or something. would your followers like that?" my mother is sweet, and kind, and i have no idea how to explain on this website you can buy someone crabs.
i put more m&ms down the hatch. i had to speak through peanuts and almonds. "if it passes 25 thousand i will print the book out in its entirety and eat it live on camera."
"oh god. no, you don't have to do that." she was anguished. "just tell them that you'd love them to read it, and that they've inspired you to write. you got started on that site, and they helped you keep going. raquel, you love these people. the community? you talk all the time about the other writers and artists and whatever else. tell them that you're hoping for their support, they'll come through."
"no," i assured her. i discovered i had dropped an m&m, but an ant had already found it, so it belonged to him now. i will let his little life have a surprise blue treasure in it, too. "i'm gonna fuckin' eat the book."

One of my favorite parts about the writing of Howl's Moving Castle is how easy it is to write off all the things from our world at first as him just being a weird wizard™ (also thanks to bestie @jutenium for spotting this I wouldn't put it like that without you!!/pos). Sure, Sophie uses weird descriptions, but readers have every reason to believe them because of the way Howl is presented as a character. When Sophie says he wrote with a quill that doesn't need an ink, you wouldn't think it was actually a ballpoint pen, you would think Howl had just enchanted his quill so that it wouldn't need ink! When she adds that she can't make out a single word, you think he has matchingly terrible handwriting, but in fact Sophie has simply never seen a pen writing. When she sees the mysterious labels on his books, you think he's keeping a lot of obscure magical literature, but it's really just an encyclopedia and a guide like "Top 10 Rugby Tips." When Sophie notices the bottles in Howl's bathtub, you think they're some kind of magical jars where he keeps girl's hearts, but I'm almost certain that they're just 'Dove' and 'Head and Shoulders' that he's enhanced with his spells and put silly labels on. When you read Calicifer singing a song in a language Sophie doesn't understand, you think it's some kind of ancient cipher or code, but it's actually just a rugby song in Welsh that Howl sings when he's drunk. And finally, when you see the terrifying black door, which is completely shrouded in darkness, you imagine a passage to an eerie, mythical place, similar to what Miyazaki showed us - but it's just fucking Wales.

what you have to understand about sophie devereaux is that despite how she might first come across, she is deeply uncool. she is a theater kid and she’s also really, really bad at theater. she mentions her high school angst while beating the shit out of an assassin. she loves crime so so much. she thinks of life in terms of noir movie tropes. she struggles in all relationships that aren’t for grifting purposes. as a teenage girl she had a poster of a flight hijacker over her bed.

"The Hissing Wastes is the WORST" the Hissing Wastes is great if you bring Blackwall because he proceeds to tell you about the time he got lost in a desert storm, he and his men got drunk and high, and then they woke up naked and had to fight a bunch of ghasts. Most riveting story in the entire game. Solas and Varric wish they had stories to tell like this.

I always lived in my head / from sophie hatter!
❝ at least you're aware of it, no? ❞  the doctor suggested, trying to brighten the girl's day with her joyful yet forced tone. she continued to fill the old kattle with water, enjoying the distraction from looking at the old face that carried behind it such a YOUNG PERSON. always doing something with her hands when finding herself in weird scenarios, for and sierra wondered if THAT's how she was supposed to look herself, after so many years. the thought was chilling.

OH, EVERYTHING WAS UGLY, TWISTED, AND NOT NATURAL ; IT MADE HER PITY MISS HATTER ALL THE MORE !
❝ and now you can do something about it. start living, truly living. though you shouldn't do it while... well, looking like a dried plum, hm? ❞  she giggled, and so did the hot boiled water on the fire behind her. sierra turned, running to serve it, the leaves ( romero, canela.. ) on a bowl twisting with the heat and emanating a scent unlike any other - exactly the one she wanted, though. lady mann would have been proud. ❝ drink this. it won't erase your curse, only the sorcerer you've mentioned might be capable of that. but, it will bring you back for some weeks until you find him. ❞
