Idk if this is a hot take but why is it always “Kai slaved away and worked his ass off to raise his sister” and never the other way round or them working hard together?

Like, I know he’s older but in the show, does he really… act older? Like if you think about Kai and Nya’s dynamic yknow? Because from my understanding:

When Kai and Nya are introduced we see Kai fail at making a sword and Nya being the one to chide him for it. Kai makes an overconfident statement about wanting to be a better blacksmith than his father. This suggests that one, Kai is rather rash as well as inexperienced (something that lines up with the rest of his character arc in the pots and also generally), with Nya being the more mature figure in contrast

Also just a note but in the shorts: “I can handle it!�� “No you can’t, stupid”

Kai frequently being very good at neglecting people or things: leaving Lloyd at an arcade whilst being focused on finding samurai x, not even knowing samurai x was Nya or that she only did it because she felt left out by him, completely abandoning both Nya and Lloyd in s3 (and Ik he was going through it at the time, but in line with the fandom’s characterisation of him)

Kai in season 5: “After I lost my dad, I lost my way. But I was lucky to have my sister watch over me”

Generally, their dynamic isn’t one where Kai really provides for Nya at all. In fact, judging by the fact that Nya can make entire mechs and Kai struggled to make a sword, Nya was probably busting her ass to provide for Kai. And judging by the s5 quote, that’s probably true. I’m not saying Nya raised Kai, it just rubs me the wrong way when she’s treated like a decorative flourish to a narrative that paints Kai as a burnt out child who was forced to grow up too soon especially since that is such a mischaracterisation of him in the first place.

would lloyd still free the serpentine in the runaways au? If cole is with him then the ninja wouldn't have hung him up and laughed at him, meaning that he wouldnt have had reason to free the serpentine. Also how does Cole end up a ninja in this au?

One way or another I'm going to free the Serpentine, they did not deserve being trapped in sunless tombs for an indeterminate time period.

Thinking... okay, so Lloyd actually makes it to Jamanakai Village before the sun even rises, while Cole's still at the little camp they settled in for the night. Because Lloyd's attempting to try and prank the town into thinking Lord Garmadon has returned, in an effort to get food. It uh... it doesn't work. The ninja are just about to hang him up on the roof when Cole shows up, upset for various reasons, and they back off.

Now Cole's annoyed and mortified and also not letting Lloyd out of his sight (he is also kinda lowkey proud of Lloyd's ingenuity, even if it didn't work all the way, but he's not like. super good with kids even if he and Lloyd are tentatively friends and in this journey of theirs together so he's not expressing anything other than annoyance and mortification), but Lloyd's upset enough that he manages to run off hours later regardless. He finds the Hypnobrai Tomb, opens it up, and immediately his mind lights up at the possibilities. Cole catches up to him, sees the chaos about to unfold, and for a moment, thinks "oh, good, the kid finally found someone willing to take care of him, I don't need to stick around anymore." So he turns to leave. He'll miss the brat, of course, but it's not like he's needed anymore, right?

Meanwhile, Wu is not only disappointed in his students for how they didn't take Lloyd seriously, but also suspects the "mean older brother" they described might be the missing Master of Earth he's been trying and failing to find. The moment he's done admonishing them he's got his head in his hands. Lily was never this hard to train, he swears, nor was she ever so hard to find.

The rest of the episode sort of progresses as in canon? Like, there's a bit where Lloyd notices Cole's absence and keeps hoping he'll pop up again, and Cole realizes that fuck, he really is going to miss Lloyd, and they definitely reunite at the end of the episode (with the map of the other tombs in hand) and realize they've grown too attached to each other to part just yet, and the ninja learn a whole lesson about not underestimating their enemy. But there's still a lot I need to work out...

I really need to rewatch Rise of the Snakes, huh 😅

As someone who's diagnosed with C-PTSD, anxiety, and early childhood depression; I LOVED how Lloyd was portrayed in season 2, him having his panic attacks, insomnia, social anxiety (in S1) and paranoid anxiety moments really felt like home to me. This is one of the reasons why I love Lloyd and why he's a huge comfort character to me!

And the fact is, this isn't the first time he was written to have anxiety and insomnia, in some moments it even implies he gets trauma flashbacks. written by Tommy Andreasan in a "could be canon" Ninjago story

I literally relate to him on a personal and emotional level, as someone who's went through generational trauma and abuse from my mum, Lloyd means A LOT to me and I feel so comforted with him, he's my favourite 🥹💚

Ninjago character ethnicities headcanons

Kai and Nya

due to many headcanons I've seen through the years I've been in this fandom, I grew very fond of the headcanon of them being Hawaiians (since Kai's name is also a Hawaiian name), but I also really enjoy the idea that they might be Chinese (Nya used to wear a qipao inspired outfit in s1-2). So, Hawaiian Chinese!

Lloyd

Despite being blond, I believe he's half Chinese half Japanese. The reason for that is that Misako has a Japanese name (but an English last name) and, well, his uncle has a Chinese name. That's it. Chinese japanese

Zane

Okay, he's a robot, but mimics a human nonetheless. I like to imagine that Zane is based on some relative (maybe a son) Dr.Julien lost. To me, Zane's father was french with Slavic or Nordic roots, so Zane probably looks like these groups of people mixed in one.

Jay

Half Korean, half European. I like the idea that his mother was already half Korean, and I headcannon Cliff Gordon to be Korean, or at least have Korean ancestry/heritage (not so sure about what word to use here). Unlike some people, I don't like using Jay being ginger as an explanation for him being half korean, because ginger hair is a mutation, it can happen in any group. But anyway, since Jay wasn't raised by his bio parents, I'm including Ed and Edna here, and I believe that they could be Latinos. I also don't have an specific country.

Cole

Hear me out: afro-hindi-brazilian. I have no reason for the Brazilian part besides me being Brazilian and an actors AU I saw that made Cole brazilian. And I LOVE it, so here. I think this would be from his father's side, who I also headcanon to be black, but Lily could be Hindi.

Pixal

I always thought she could have mixed characteristics, so, if she was in some human skin as Zane sometimes is, you wouldn't be able to identify just by looking. And when asked she also wouldn't be able to respond.

I follow the same logic in my 90s au, however, I headcanon her as albino!

Skylor

Very much obviously Chinese, there's not much to discuss here. Like I said, ginger hair is a genetic mutation, but she could be dying it red too. She's one of the few characters I don't envision being mixed.

Morro

Japanese. No reason for that despite him and Taigen from Blue Eye Samurai being SO similar (appearance wise).

Harumi

Also japanese (and also albino). No other reason besides her name.

Vania

I really don't know, specially since Shintaro is a confusing place. She wears an outfit that reminds me a lot o hanfu (chinese traditional wear), but her name is russian and Shintaro is a very japanese inspired name. so maybe russian-japanese? or russian-chinese? or the three together?

ethnically? french-japanese. however, i write them very brazilian coded, so they're brazilian (but still descent from french and japanese people)

Seems like Lloyd and Arin's mech was once planned to be an Imperian mech which frankly makes a LOT more sense considering the hat + one eye in it... That Photac looks sick, glad they changed Beatrix's hair I DON'T like that look on her bruh... Ras lowkey looks kinda funny sorry Ras... love how the claw hands on Ras is just consistently an idea in the DR concepts for s1 and s2 and he never gets them LOL. Also Sora's outfit here is incredible

Valid asf, I've honestly sorta given up on semi decent Canon Zane arc or trait, his character is bland and boring atm, he's been heavily nerfed in comparison both in terms of just brute strength and element

Like seriously, given everything that's happened and when comparing him to someone like Nya, who controls water and has partial control over Ice, it calls into question why Ice was even a core element instead of water (obviously 2011 and 2024 Ninjago are 2 different things but you get my question)

Touching a bit more on his element, I'm honestly really really tired of how badly utilised it is in show, it's to the point that ice doesn't make water anymore (S2P1 in the Desert and Crystalized also I'm the Desert), it can't even hold up against enemies well (S1P1 in Imperium and God damn Zur somehow (and this is comparing it to SEASON 1 WHERE THE MASTER OF EARTH'S FOOT WAS ENCASED BY IT)), and even when it's used it's used very very poorly

Like think of how Ice could be used for a moment: For making sharp on-the-go weapons, cornering opponents by summoning ice walls or spikes behind/around them, making ice armor to absorb any shock or physical trauma, or just even ICE PILLERS for an easy escape or quick height advantage

And this is only touching on Zane's element, I won't even get into his character and how CANONICALLY, we've yet to get a proper address of how traumatising his death in S3 was (I'd like to note, it's addressing the truama brought on by a traumatic expiernce, not what S4 gave us, which was addressing how he might have not been himself even)

Then you've got the stuff with Echo that was just, never brought up (whether you see Echo as an actual character or just "Zane's brother") and how that might've affected his out look on Julien ((tbf this is more of a Skybound problem then a show problem so I'll allow it)

Then there's the Ice Emperor who WAS addressd really well in fact but it was in... A book, 4 seasons and a special after the deed was already done and dusted

Then there's the lack of explanation regarding the show's stuble hints of him tampering with his memories (The march of the Oni set shorts and the Spinjitzu Virtues shorts)

Then there's the lack of reaction regarding something like him being just a robotic character for exposition and plot device or heck even characterless, so much so to the point are starting to doubt if he, in universe, sees worth in himself a lot (aham that one scene with The Administration, his whole "Hightined Emotions" line, the Wyldfyre voice lines (which all could me interpreted differently but from my own POV that's how it looks like at least, feel free to disagree tbh I wouldn't mind it), and just ughhhhh-

Zane's character has never been in a worse state, and it's even worse when you consider that not even the writers seem to be realising they're doing all of this intentionally

Like take the part where Zane calls Arin cringe and think about it for a moment

Zane, the show's definitive little guy since S1, calling a Teenager Ninja in-training (who is likely his same age or younger when he started with the ninja), struggling with being lied to by his best friend among other things going on in the season

How does that make any sense

Answer: it doesn't

Dragons Rising Season 3 predictions about Zane

Decides if everyone else is going to go out and find people then by golly he is going out and finding Pixal (maybe gets leads by going through the Administration's archives)

Loving the themes of personhood going on in dragons rising …

I really like how different “species” or groups of people have ignorant views on others (like sora assuming dragons can’t do spinjitzu) , it feels really realistic considering you have 16 worlds filled with different peoples just being smashed together

This happened in s1 too when lloyd arin and sora assumed the rock people were the antagonists

Sorry for the delay. You asked mostly for Kai's so I delivered. If anyone wants more hcs about the others I can work on it some time in the future (I also have more of Kai).

Now the hcs:

• All the ninja have PTSD from everything they’ve been through

• And abandonment issues

• Cole has an eating disorder and eats when he’s stressed, this is one of the reasons he is very insecure of his weight. People online poke at him for it

• Jay's terrified of losing his loved ones again because of him. That is another reason why he went absolutely crazy post Seabound, as he thinks it was his fault Nya had to resort to sacrificing herself

• He used to be bullied for living in a junkyard before becoming a ninja and that's why he was ashamed of it

• Zane always shoves down everything wrong that happens to him (e.g being the Ice Emperor for way too long to be ok about it) because he puts the team and their needs first.

• Nya has nightmares from the time she died in skybound but doesn't tell anyone.

• She had to keep her work and love life secret from her brother for fear that he would shut her down to protect her. Her fear persisted well into s1 and that's why she felt she had to hide Samurai X even from Kai

• Lloyd still admires his uncle despite his obsession with the green ninja (and all the neglect that came with it) because he's the only relative that actually took him in

• All of the ninja have at some point hidden an injury at least once. But Kai and Nya are the ones that do it more often (Nya specially when she was samurai X), and know how to treat mild wounds because of it.

• Kai and Nya do physical activities when they’re stressed or have emotions they don’t want to process. They can do their thing like Kai working in the forge and Nya doing mechanics but they usually train, however they can go on for hours (Kai has passed out a few times)

• Kai and Zane have a very poor sense of self. Zane’s comes from him not valuing his life and thinking he’s expendable since he can be rebuilt, ignoring all the trauma that comes from getting severely hurt or “dying”. Kai has problems seeing his worth as a human being because he’s never lived for himself; everything he does is for someone else and so he thinks his value resides in what he can do for other people. 

• Kai is terrified of the idea of being alone, it’s his worst fear.

• He has THE WORST coping mechanisms and Zane is confused on how his body was able to go through all of them (Alcoholism, illegal fights, smoking…)

• Kai is an insomniac, he barely sleeps most nights and instead just waits until he passes out (He has very deep eyebags because of it but hides them with make up, covering his freckles too). He sometimes bumps into some other ninja at night since they all have fucked up sleep schedules. 

• Lloyd also has a lot of problems sleeping because of nightmares and goes to Kai or Nya’s room where he feels safer (mostly into Kai’s). Sometimes they stay up at night chilling or they try to sleep. In those cases the nights with Lloyd are the ones where Kai sleeps the most because he feels safer too.

• Kai has chronic depression because of his fucked up childhood

• Lloyd thought he had depression too for a while but it turned out to be autistic burnout because of the stress of being the green ninja. But he can’t properly rest or heal from the burnout so he’s exhausted most of the time.

• When he’s stressed Kai forgets to eat and can go days with very little food because he’s used to it from being poor in his childhood.

• Genuinely forgot what it feels like to be a kid and have no responsibilities so it’s his personal mission to not let that happen to Lloyd. Kai would be devastated if Lloyd ended up like him.

• Kai sometimes feels insecure about his face scars and contemplates hiding them with make up.

• Kai’s touch starved but terrified of letting people in.

• He hides his negative emotions as anger and when the others try to reach out to him he pushes them away by getting angry at them until it's mutual and they leave him alone.

• Never told the others about what he did after Zane’s “death”. He fixed himself up, alone.
