The Miraculous Movie was different than the series…and that’s okay!

I watched the movie this morning and loved it! I think it’s important to talk about the changes that were made and what impact they had.

How the characters were rewritten

There definitely was a difference in how the characters were written in the movie, and some of the redevelopment of characters was really good!

Gabriel was by far the one who had the best redevelopment of his personality. Gabriel in the series is awful, as we all know.

In the series, he barely gives a shit about his own son, like there is absolutely nothing redeemable about his character. In every “what if” episode and the season 5 finale, Gabriel does not show any regret to hurting people, including his own son.

However, in the movie, Gabriel actually makes a better attempt to communicate with Adrien and, most importantly, feels strong regret when he hurt his son. He cries; he feels remorse for destroying Paris and injuring Adrien in the process. He hugs Adrien (along with the spirit of Emilie 🥹) and decides to stop being Hawk Moth. It was beautifully done. He got a redemption arc that he never got in the series. I know I personally felt so good watching that and seeing the relationship between him and Adrien being repaired.

Marinette was her usual clumsy self, but was written as having no friends at school because she embarrasses herself so much. In a way, it makes more sense than her being so popular like she is in the series. Kids in high school can be pretty judgy and ruthless. So it makes sense for the “clumsy girl” to be made fun of and judged by people who don’t know her well.

Adrien was different in a lot of ways. He wasn’t shown running to school to gain freedom. He wasn’t introduced as being a super model who’s friends with Chloe. Instead, he’s already going to the school, he’s already friends with Nino, and he happens to run into Marinette at the library. He doesn’t have that same chemistry with Marinette as he does in the series which is a bit odd that they took that away, but it does make sense that he’d turn her down when she asked him to the ball, since he loves Ladybug. In the movie, he very clearly sees Marinette as just a friend and it’s shown that he’s building a friendship with her without him developing a crush. It’s different but still wholesome, especially when he shows her the old family photo to her. Plus, it evens it out well since Ladybug obviously turns Cat Noir away but they’re still building up their bond, too. They both get turned down.

It was ehhh that Adrien was a bit too cocky at times as Cat Noir, but overall, his goofiness and self confidence is still pretty on brand for him. He was still very encouraging towards Ladybug but not overly flirtatious, pushing her to her limits. Instead, it was them lightly teasing each other and then playfully fighting. And, speaking of the playful fighting, their bond was stronger in the movie seeing as how they were shown spending more time together off duty and that they were treated as equals.

In the show, Cat Noir is automatically made sidekick and left in the dark about everything. But in the movie, he gets to meet Master Fu in disguise alongside Ladybug. Sure, he didn’t help Master Fu with his cane like he did in the series, but that didn’t matter since the lore was changed.

Alya was less annoying in the movie. Sorry. Don’t get me wrong, I love Alya in the series, but she’s so over the top at times with how obsessed she is over the heroes, blogging, and filming things for her blog. In the movie, she was toned down a lot and I liked that. It was also cute that Nino had a crush on her and just her, not Marinette first. Unlike the series, he wasn’t on that pipeline of guys who fell for Marinette since that pipeline doesn’t exist in the movie.

Tom was made out to be an embarrassment for Marinette which is honestly more realistic for a teenager. Most teenagers get pretty embarrassed by their parents, especially when they still treat them very childlike. And, I like that he went out to the fair to look for her since he heard there was danger. Marinette’s parents don’t usually go out to look for her or make sure she’s in her room when there’s danger afoot. So, I appreciate that they made Tom do that since he obviously loves Marinette a lot.

The rewriting of (some of) the lore

As I had mentioned in my previous section, the lore was rewritten, too. Instead of Master Fu being the one to pick Marinette and Adrien simply because they helped him, the kwamis sense that Marinette and Adrien are the right people to be Ladybug and Cat Noir. That was a much better way to write that, in my opinion.

Hawk Moth got ahold of the butterfly miraculous by mistake. That part wasn’t changed but also, it didn’t need to be.

The change of plot

The plot was very simple. It didn’t have a whole lot of crazy, in depth details like the show’s does. So, anyone who has never watched the show can easily understand and absorb what’s going on (I will be forcing my boyfriend to watch it with me since he’s never seen the show lol).

I like that it was very clear cut and easy to understand while still being intense and meaningful. It still summarizes a lot of what the series entails while fixing some issues in the plot development.

They didn’t doddle with Hawk Moth like they do in the show. He was a successful villain in his second attempt but then realized he should stop when he hurt his own son in the process.

Also, there was a reveal. It was a wee bit underwhelming, but I still think it was done well! It was a moment with just Marinette and Adrien alone, as it should be. And, it was cutesy and heartfelt. The fact that Marinette dressed like Ladybug for the ball (cutest dress ever imo) and Adrien dressed like Cat Noir was so cute. That’s what a lot of the fandom has been asking for and written about in fanfics, I feel like.

The romance between these two is most important. They didn’t need Kagami and Luka as 2nd love interests to throw things off track. Yes, I like these characters in the show, but they weren’t needed in the plot.

The music

I love musicals. I was a bit of a theater kid in high school, plus I’m obsessed with music lol. So, yes, I’m a bit biased when I say I love that they made this a musical.

I personally loved the music. I can tell a lot of good effort was put into it and I’ve already been listening to the songs on my Spotify. The song between Ladybug and Cat Noir in the theater “Now I See” and Cat Noir jumping on the clouds (literally, on cloud nine) singing “My Lady” was absolutely adorable and super romantic, which, as we know, is a big part of the show.

Even Gabriel’s song “Chaos Will Reign Today” was amazing! It conveyed a lot of emotion and turns into one of those dramatic villain songs. Keith Silverstein is clearly talented enough to sing for his own character and he did it well.

My only nitpick is that Marinette’s singer, Lou, has a very different voice than Christina Vee. So, Marinette sounds very different, much more mature-sounding when she sings and it kinda catches you off guard. I’m surprised they didn’t have Christina sing for her, but there must’ve been a reason why she didn’t. But, SQVARE sounded similar enough to Bryce Papenbrook when he sung for Cat Noir which i absolutely love.

Conclusion

I personally give this movie a 10/10 just because it made me smile the whole time, and it’s such a feel good movie. I’ll happily watch it again and listen to the soundtrack, especially on a day when I’m feeling down. It wasn’t perfect in every aspect, but it was perfect in a simple, heartwarming sense and that it can be watched by everyone, not only people who watch the series.

I understand if it made you cringe or you were moreso looking for a continuation of the series not a retelling. But, I prefer some simplicity which is a big part of what made me like it. Like I said, I know it wasn’t absolute perfection, but it was so frickin adorable and I can’t help but smile.

There’s a lot of differences but also plenty of similarities between the movie and the show. But understand they’re not meant to be the same and that’s okay! I don’t think the movie was horrible for most of the changes it made. In fact, I think most of them made sense and made it a bit more realistic (as I explained).

Sorry, I gotta rant for a sec and I don't know where else to go to cause I don't want Mari stans to come for me.

I just hate it so much how Revelator had Marinette only be supportive of Cat Noir being more than her obedient and insignificant shadow that only breathes to make her look and feel good NOW that it served her selfishness.

Others already pointed out that Marinette said that she KNOWS Cat wouldn't agree with keeping this from Adrien and yet she's making him do it anyway just so she isn't faced with any consequence if her own actions, even when hardly any if this is bout her so people would move in from her rather quickly to instead help Adrien.

I also hate how manipulative it feels how she got Cat Noir to do it. He voiced actual concern if wiping out the memory is ethically right and she just deflects from his valid point and tells him that he's a good person while taking his hands and putting them on his heart, telling him to trust himself.

I hate that so much. I hate that Marinette always dials up the violence or affection whenever she wants Cat Noir to settle for something bad or lesser than he deserves or wants him to just do whatever she wants and not be questioned or called out for it. I hate how CONSISTENT that is and how weaponized her touch feels by now.

I hate that the show has me dreading any time Marinette touches Cat Noir now because no matter if its violent or affectionate, it's almost always done by her to get her way. It didn't use to be like this.

She doesn't talk or give actual arguments, explanations, compromises or whatever. She just dials up the violence or affection with a little line or two about what SHE needs or deserves, how right she is, or say something that makes the viewers think "oh wow, she's such a loving person, she should get her way 🥰" even though she's being selfish and dismissive of everything but her own will time and time again.

Alya at least gave Cat Noir an actual reason for why using his powers like this is good under these circumstances, but Marinette just immediately took the hands of the person she knows has feelings for her, has low self-esteem and always puts her first and went "your such a good person, Kitty. Believe in yourself, there is always room to grow 🥹"

Idc if they meant to write her like that, she's making all my alarm bells go off because of how manipulative this is in nature. Stop deflecting from the point he made and stop touching him while saying long overdue nice words you only ever say to get something out of it. It's disgusting. I wanna save Adrichat from that girl.

And i hate how the show just says that Marinette would have apparently never let Cat be more than her submissive Hype man to make herself look better if it hadn't been for her wanting to avoid facing such a big aftermatch in SEASON 6. Apparently, it had to go this far for her to finally not prioritize keeping Cat as small and controllable as possible.

How am I not supposed to hate that? It's written to be selfish to the core. Even if you wanna be generous and say that Marinette has been feeling bad all this time for how she's been keeping Cat small and thinking he's too stupid and incompetent to do anything else because she beat that into his head over and over again to get her way, then I'm sorry but no? I'm not gonna hate this any less cause she's still only NOW acting on her guilt from making him feel like her stupid pet who shouldn't even try to be anything because he would just be in the way and a bother.

Gabriel didn't do that. LADYBUG beat that into his head all season 4 and she is too much of a coward to make up for it because it would make him less beneficial and controllable for her so she just kept him thinking so lowly of himself as long as he does it quietly so she doesn't have to feel bad for not ever supporting him back.

Her only now acting on that guilt in Revelator is not the loving thing I've seen Marinette fans claim it is cause she's literally only doing it for her own sake, not for his. Idc if she's proud when he successfully evolved his powers, shes a selfish coward for only doing it NOW when encouraging him to try being more than the pet she tamed him into being is of more benefit to her than keeping him small.

That's not loving and caring. That's selfish and I want Maribug to be kept away from Cat Noir with a restraining order. Clearly she won't ever be written again to just show kindness and support because Cat Noir deserves it, she only does it so she can get something out of it or when the universe as good as forced her to do so.

Of course Marinette believes a good person can do no wrong because only having good intentions matters. That's how she justifies practically everything she does, especially everything she does to Cat Noir. She’ll lie to him, browbeat him to submission or push every emotional weak point she knows he has to get her way, but it's okay because she's a good person and she's only doing it for the greater good.

Also, like, this isn't even the first time Marinette manipulates someone in season 6. It's said something happening twice can still be a coincidence, but three times is a pattern, and we do have at least three examples of emotional manipulation from three different episodes of season 6 alone. And we only have a handful of episodes for the season out! Either we got some really weird luck with the episodes that have come out so far, or Marinette is doing a lot of this shit in season 6. We'll see.

In ‘Illustrhater’ Marinette only asks Alya to be the backup Guardian after Tikki has gone through the whole ceremony of gifting her a Kwagatama. Alya was cornered into accepting or she'd be offending both Tikki and Marinette by Marinette herself. In ‘Sublimation', Marinette wobbles her lip at Sublime and whines about her being scared of not being worthy of being her friend, basically fake crying until Sublime not only forgives her, but agrees to be her friend and cater to her comfort, because Marinette created a situation where anyone not willing to come across as a jerk would feel pressured to reassure her that she's worthy of friendship. And now, we have her practically love bombing Cat Noir until he stops refusing to do what she wants.

The writers are just too consistent about the ways Marinette mistreats the people around her for me to be comfortable with any of it.

I gave her a more reddish palette/tones because since she wants to be ladybug so badly, contrasting Marinette who is cooler toned and yet is Ladybug, combined with her barely wearing red as a main choice in her outfits. I think it’s a cool lil trick! Like aesthetically Lila would match with the red suit more!

There’s also other sort of “imposter” aspects of Lila: her lying about her background, her wearing red all the time despite not being the Ladybug holder, even her akumatized design for chocoau is based off of a ladybug kind of, and her akumatized object is a pair of earrings!! It’s so fun to create a kind of character that unconsciously is trying to build this identity for herself, despite the narrative making it clear that’s not who she is. Like a cruel irony!!

I stole this one from @paracosmicat, but her favourite candy would be peach rings. They mentioned it in one of our fics an eternity ago and it stuck! This girl deserves all the treats… Give her all the treats…

Her perfume smells of orange blossom. This is mainly based on the fact that orange is her André-assigned ice cream flavour.

In addition to Toulouse-Lautrec (mentioned in Lies I believe), she would like Monet’s work: same period, adjacent genres, and he drew a lot of inspiration from Japanese prints which she would be familiar with. There is a certain rebellion at the core of impressionism she would love, without fully understanding why initially.

Felix has a complicated relationship with horses, but she loves them. They’re so big and powerful and a little bit scary and she looks at them with a thousand stars in her eyes.

She paints Felix! All the time! He will pose for her of course, but sometimes she will just sketch him while he’s still asleep next to her… Generally speaking, they were both taught to rise very early and would need to unlearn that. Many of their mornings would be spent actively making an effort to stay in bed and chatting about life.

On that note — she is the incarnation of the “I’m going to get a good grade in therapy” meme. Went to Marinette after S5 and specifically asked her to teach her sewing and arts and crafts and whatever so she could unlearn perfectionism… except she somehow managed to be a perfectionist about that (“Look at this plushie I made, Marinette. Its proportions are truly mediocre. This is great. I am excellent at accepting mediocrity.”).

Freckles!!! Freckles everywhere!!! It’s one of my favourite features about her and I want them to also decorate her arms and shoulders and back.

Her favourite flowers are actually tulips! It’s something she gets to figure out once she’s freed from the very strict conception of feminity her mother forced on her.

She’s little Louis Dupain-Cheng’s favourite aunt!

Not really a headcanon per say, but apart from the Dragon Miraculous, I would love to see her with the Peacock, the Butterfly and especially the Cat. The overpowering nature of her emotions is such a huge part of her character — it would make for great storylines!

Speaking of her Miraculous — I’d love to see Ryuko lean even more into the asymmetrical design she’s got going on. Maybe get a huge jacket that would disrupt her very sleek silhouette and signify how much she’s grown into her own person.

And probably more I’m not thinking about right now! A lot of them arise during the writing process, so the list is bound to grow!

Feels like it’s been forever, but I’m so excited to say that I’ve started posting for my Mariclaw follow-up to my Shadrien fic, Dawning Light! This one is called Sideways, and I’ve renamed the series ‘Gaze Into the Darkness,’ which I took from the song The Darkness by John Michael Howell. - whenever luka first meets you he recognizes you for that exact reason. he thinks you’re cool

- adrien randomly drags you away from luka sometimes because you’re his one (1) confidant about his miraculous

- this causes a bit of strain in the early stages of your relationship, but luckily after he finds out adriens identity later he’s understanding about it

- he teaches you breathing exercises to deal with your anxiety when adriens chat noir

- this man has to keep you from your previously mentioned protection escapades. like he gets it but no you cannot go outside the villain is literally throwing cars everywhere.

- you’re just as cheery as your twin, but a little more outgoing and luka immediately noticed that.

- he asked you out after you almost got akumatized (he was stressed)

- speaking of, he was the one who comforted you whenever you just burst into tears over almost getting akumatized. like he had no clue what was going on and you couldn’t say you didn’t want to fight your brother for obvious reasons but he comforted you as best as he could

- him and adrien get along so he goes to him sometimes whenever he needs input on something regarding you

- you drag luka into making plans to try to get a (unknown to them) double date with adrien and marinette

- you have definitely bet on when marinette and adrien would get together because nobody can deny that they will & it’s just a matter of when

- when you win the bet he takes you out for dinner (he definitely would have anyways)

- adrien will sometimes try to sneak luka in as a surprise for you during some of your things like piano lessons (luka has to be Way hidden but you’re just happy he’s there and that makes them both happy)

- you’ve tried to teach luka fencing before and that failed like. miserably. but to be fair luka tried to teach you guitar once and you were bad at that

- he prefers that you’re either out of the house or at his house because he knows the environment at yours

- he loves watching you hang out with everyone & also watching the interactions between you and adrien, he appreciates just watching you show your own ways of platonic and familial love

- invites you over for dinner most nights. sometimes invites adrien too

Oh my gosh, it's good to know you enjoy the movie that much because it's incredible to me to see people talking about things they love! <3 🥺🥺🥺 ... B-but it's also, uh kinda unfortunate because I... nnnnngg how to say this... <I am so sorry in advance I put it away in case it is too long and it ruins your mood, but yes TLDR; The movie is cute, enjoyed the artistic elements, but hate the plot dev...>

I'm actually on the opposite side of this matter, and have a quite strong opinion while being over there, and oh boy oh boy, I think "that" opinion will hurt some poor soul and I swear I won't mean to and pleaseee hear me out... 🥹🥹🥹

I enjoy the music, the aesthetics, the camera angle, the actions, Ladynoir obv, some scenes that are executed stronger than the series (eg: Marinette saves Master Fu; Sabrina's kindness toward the new girl; how they express Marinette's anxiety and the opening and initial character behaviors make sense with the overall settings) and GOOD MUSIC! (I think I said it twice)) But yeah, I tried my hardest to watch it with a blank mind, no judgment, no comparison, and in the end the plot and character devs are not for me...

However, I do think they will be an excellent stand-alone movie for any kind of audience and simply enjoy some action and cute romantic moments. Some scenes are not good for kids like did you see the way Adrien treated Marinette?? He did try to change but yeah I need 30 more minutes for that also did I mention Zag got the Chinese legend wrong with his version of intro-

For what it's worth I think the movie is wasted potential, I truly was so sad, but I do understand why many like it tho I still think the series is superior as of now, I love seeing good things inspired by it hehe but again, I won't jump on the hate train toward the series. If you decided to read this, you are a wonderful and tolerant person; I am so blessed to get such respect from you, I would never hate you for this. Sorry and thank you!!

“And you want me to come?” Marinette asked, pulling nervously at her hair. Tim took hold of her hands and gave a soft laugh. 

“Yes, Marinette, I want you to come,” he reassured her. “But if you don't want to come, I'm fine with that too. It's going to be busy, and loud, and they all just get super rowdy. But it's Jaime's birthday and it feels like a good time to meet more of my friends.”

“Okay then, it sounds like fun,” she said with a bright smile, immediately planning the dress she wanted to make for the occasion. She was determined to make a good impression on his friends, even if she might technically know some of them already.

When Tim collected her from her apartment, he had to take a second. She had done her hair in an intricate bun, light makeup making her eyes look even brighter than usual and her lips were the same bright red she had painted them for their first date. But what really stopped him in his tracks was her dress.

It had a modest neckline and fell past the knee, but it hugged her torso flatteringly. It was red and had long sleeves that widened at the cuff, little white bows embroidered in a row. The skirt billowed out and the red fabric was cut and stitched flawlessly to triangles of white. Paired with sneakers and a leather jacket, it was just the right amount of casual to dressy.

“Wow,” he said, and immediately felt like a neanderthal. Wow? He tried again. “You look…” Yep, that was obviously better. “That's the dress you've been working on? It's incredible.”

“Thanks,” she beamed, twirling slightly and making it flare. “You don't look too shabby yourself.”

Tim preened slightly, pleased that he'd worn jeans with no holes and a shirt without a design on it. Topped with a buttoned shirt, it was leagues ahead of his usual grungy look. He had also stuck to sneakers, preferring the comfort since it wasn't a formal event.

“We should get going, I bet everyone will love your look,” he said with a grin, sliding his hand around her shoulders to lead her to the car. She slid her own arm around his waist and they walked in a comfortable silence.

The car ride was short and when they pulled into a space in the car park he could see that there were dozens of cars already there. He'd planned to be later than the others so that Marinette could choose who to introduce herself to and when. Easier to slip in when it was already crowded than to be one of the only people there.

“You made it! Oh my gosh, Mari, I absolutely adore your dress! You have to tell me where you bought it, and what other colours they do,” Cassie said, latching onto them almost immediately. Tim had barely had time to scold her for talking so fast before she turned and hollered into the crowd. “Jaime! Tim's here and he brought his girlfriend!”

“Cassie, can you let her get used to the crowds before-”

“Hey,” Jaime said, appearing behind Cassie. He was wearing a giant birthday badge and lifted a drink towards them. “What's up, I'm Jaime. Holy cow, Cassie wasn't exaggerating, you're adorable.”

“Right? Ahh, little Tim's growing up and meeting people outside of our little crew,” Cassie said, sniffing dramatically and pretending to wipe a tear from her eye. Marinette covered her mouth to stifle a giggle but Cassie spotted it and grinned widely. “Oh, we absolutely have to introduce you to everyone. I mean, you already know Dick, and he's hanging with Babs and Conner…”

Within an hour, Tim had lost track of Marinette. He wasn't worried about her, but he was put out by the fact that he didn't have her by his side. He caught glimpses of her every now and then but by the time he got to where she'd been, she was gone again. 

Finally, as some of the older people started to clear out - mostly heroes who had duty - he found her back with Dick, Conner and Megan. Conner and Megan were, as usual, happily entwined and Dick was telling jokes. At least, that's what he guessed based on the amount of eye rolling Marinette was doing.

Deciding to be the best boyfriend, he made his way straight over to them and slipped an arm around Marinette's waist. She tensed momentarily before relaxing when she looked back at him, smiling. She pressed a kiss to his jaw and he flushed while smiling down at her. 

“I thought I'd lost you permanently to Cassie,” he said in her ear, ignoring the gleeful look Dick shot the others. “Let me know when you want to go home, okay?”

“Don't be silly, Tim!” Dick said, drink sloshing slightly as he did a wide gesture. “Marinette was just saying that she's only been to dive bars since coming to Gotham. Can you imagine?”

“Dick, she's underage here? Dive bars are probably the only place that wouldn't look for ID,” Tim said with an eye roll. 

“The fact that you could go to war at eighteen but not drink is criminal,” Marinette muttered, scowling when everyone laughed. “But no, I'm alright, Tim, but whenever you want to go, we can.”

“You're not thinking of leaving already?” Cassie said, reappearing behind him like a bad penny. “We were just thinking of heading back to yours, Tim, and watching an awful movie.”

“Do I get any say in this?” Tim demanded, raising his eyes to the ceiling. 

“No,” came the chorus of replies before everyone burst out laughing.

“Fine, but I have to get Marinette home first,” he said, squeezing her gently. 

“Oh, no way,” Cassie said immediately, pointing a finger at Tim. “You can't keep her away from us now that we've met her! Besides, Bruce is bound to have some decent wine…”

“You don't have to bribe me with wine,” Marinette giggled, resting a hand on Tim's forearm. “I will just have to apologise to Alfred for not bringing any macarons this time.”

They all agreed to head over to the manor, Tim and Marinette heading to his car. He held the door open for her but she stopped to pull him into a kiss, arms wrapping around his neck as his slipped around her waist.

Thank you! I actually haven't watched the new season yet (still waiting for ep1 apparently?) but I will eventually continue with Miraculous stuff, it's just that I have work and other projects (outside of TS4) in mind and can't fully commit to a set at the moment :(
