The Miraculous Movie was different than the series…and that’s okay!

I watched the movie this morning and loved it! I think it’s important to talk about the changes that were made and what impact they had.

How the characters were rewritten

There definitely was a difference in how the characters were written in the movie, and some of the redevelopment of characters was really good!

Gabriel was by far the one who had the best redevelopment of his personality. Gabriel in the series is awful, as we all know.

In the series, he barely gives a shit about his own son, like there is absolutely nothing redeemable about his character. In every “what if” episode and the season 5 finale, Gabriel does not show any regret to hurting people, including his own son.

However, in the movie, Gabriel actually makes a better attempt to communicate with Adrien and, most importantly, feels strong regret when he hurt his son. He cries; he feels remorse for destroying Paris and injuring Adrien in the process. He hugs Adrien (along with the spirit of Emilie 🥹) and decides to stop being Hawk Moth. It was beautifully done. He got a redemption arc that he never got in the series. I know I personally felt so good watching that and seeing the relationship between him and Adrien being repaired.

Marinette was her usual clumsy self, but was written as having no friends at school because she embarrasses herself so much. In a way, it makes more sense than her being so popular like she is in the series. Kids in high school can be pretty judgy and ruthless. So it makes sense for the “clumsy girl” to be made fun of and judged by people who don’t know her well.

Adrien was different in a lot of ways. He wasn’t shown running to school to gain freedom. He wasn’t introduced as being a super model who’s friends with Chloe. Instead, he’s already going to the school, he’s already friends with Nino, and he happens to run into Marinette at the library. He doesn’t have that same chemistry with Marinette as he does in the series which is a bit odd that they took that away, but it does make sense that he’d turn her down when she asked him to the ball, since he loves Ladybug. In the movie, he very clearly sees Marinette as just a friend and it’s shown that he’s building a friendship with her without him developing a crush. It’s different but still wholesome, especially when he shows her the old family photo to her. Plus, it evens it out well since Ladybug obviously turns Cat Noir away but they’re still building up their bond, too. They both get turned down.

It was ehhh that Adrien was a bit too cocky at times as Cat Noir, but overall, his goofiness and self confidence is still pretty on brand for him. He was still very encouraging towards Ladybug but not overly flirtatious, pushing her to her limits. Instead, it was them lightly teasing each other and then playfully fighting. And, speaking of the playful fighting, their bond was stronger in the movie seeing as how they were shown spending more time together off duty and that they were treated as equals.

In the show, Cat Noir is automatically made sidekick and left in the dark about everything. But in the movie, he gets to meet Master Fu in disguise alongside Ladybug. Sure, he didn’t help Master Fu with his cane like he did in the series, but that didn’t matter since the lore was changed.

Alya was less annoying in the movie. Sorry. Don’t get me wrong, I love Alya in the series, but she’s so over the top at times with how obsessed she is over the heroes, blogging, and filming things for her blog. In the movie, she was toned down a lot and I liked that. It was also cute that Nino had a crush on her and just her, not Marinette first. Unlike the series, he wasn’t on that pipeline of guys who fell for Marinette since that pipeline doesn’t exist in the movie.

Tom was made out to be an embarrassment for Marinette which is honestly more realistic for a teenager. Most teenagers get pretty embarrassed by their parents, especially when they still treat them very childlike. And, I like that he went out to the fair to look for her since he heard there was danger. Marinette’s parents don’t usually go out to look for her or make sure she’s in her room when there’s danger afoot. So, I appreciate that they made Tom do that since he obviously loves Marinette a lot.

The rewriting of (some of) the lore

As I had mentioned in my previous section, the lore was rewritten, too. Instead of Master Fu being the one to pick Marinette and Adrien simply because they helped him, the kwamis sense that Marinette and Adrien are the right people to be Ladybug and Cat Noir. That was a much better way to write that, in my opinion.

Hawk Moth got ahold of the butterfly miraculous by mistake. That part wasn’t changed but also, it didn’t need to be.

The change of plot

The plot was very simple. It didn’t have a whole lot of crazy, in depth details like the show’s does. So, anyone who has never watched the show can easily understand and absorb what’s going on (I will be forcing my boyfriend to watch it with me since he’s never seen the show lol).

I like that it was very clear cut and easy to understand while still being intense and meaningful. It still summarizes a lot of what the series entails while fixing some issues in the plot development.

They didn’t doddle with Hawk Moth like they do in the show. He was a successful villain in his second attempt but then realized he should stop when he hurt his own son in the process.

Also, there was a reveal. It was a wee bit underwhelming, but I still think it was done well! It was a moment with just Marinette and Adrien alone, as it should be. And, it was cutesy and heartfelt. The fact that Marinette dressed like Ladybug for the ball (cutest dress ever imo) and Adrien dressed like Cat Noir was so cute. That’s what a lot of the fandom has been asking for and written about in fanfics, I feel like.

The romance between these two is most important. They didn’t need Kagami and Luka as 2nd love interests to throw things off track. Yes, I like these characters in the show, but they weren’t needed in the plot.

The music

I love musicals. I was a bit of a theater kid in high school, plus I’m obsessed with music lol. So, yes, I’m a bit biased when I say I love that they made this a musical.

I personally loved the music. I can tell a lot of good effort was put into it and I’ve already been listening to the songs on my Spotify. The song between Ladybug and Cat Noir in the theater “Now I See” and Cat Noir jumping on the clouds (literally, on cloud nine) singing “My Lady” was absolutely adorable and super romantic, which, as we know, is a big part of the show.

Even Gabriel’s song “Chaos Will Reign Today” was amazing! It conveyed a lot of emotion and turns into one of those dramatic villain songs. Keith Silverstein is clearly talented enough to sing for his own character and he did it well.

My only nitpick is that Marinette’s singer, Lou, has a very different voice than Christina Vee. So, Marinette sounds very different, much more mature-sounding when she sings and it kinda catches you off guard. I’m surprised they didn’t have Christina sing for her, but there must’ve been a reason why she didn’t. But, SQVARE sounded similar enough to Bryce Papenbrook when he sung for Cat Noir which i absolutely love.

Conclusion

I personally give this movie a 10/10 just because it made me smile the whole time, and it’s such a feel good movie. I’ll happily watch it again and listen to the soundtrack, especially on a day when I’m feeling down. It wasn’t perfect in every aspect, but it was perfect in a simple, heartwarming sense and that it can be watched by everyone, not only people who watch the series.

I understand if it made you cringe or you were moreso looking for a continuation of the series not a retelling. But, I prefer some simplicity which is a big part of what made me like it. Like I said, I know it wasn’t absolute perfection, but it was so frickin adorable and I can’t help but smile.

There’s a lot of differences but also plenty of similarities between the movie and the show. But understand they’re not meant to be the same and that’s okay! I don’t think the movie was horrible for most of the changes it made. In fact, I think most of them made sense and made it a bit more realistic (as I explained).

- you’ve shown up on the news before due to being reckless in protection for your twin (people are fed up. like you are the equivalent of alya getting all up in the face of danger for the ladyblog but for your brother)

- whenever luka first meets you he recognizes you for that exact reason. he thinks you’re cool

- adrien randomly drags you away from luka sometimes because you’re his one (1) confidant about his miraculous

- this causes a bit of strain in the early stages of your relationship, but luckily after he finds out adriens identity later he’s understanding about it

- he teaches you breathing exercises to deal with your anxiety when adriens chat noir

- this man has to keep you from your previously mentioned protection escapades. like he gets it but no you cannot go outside the villain is literally throwing cars everywhere.

- you’re just as cheery as your twin, but a little more outgoing and luka immediately noticed that.

- he asked you out after you almost got akumatized (he was stressed)

- speaking of, he was the one who comforted you whenever you just burst into tears over almost getting akumatized. like he had no clue what was going on and you couldn’t say you didn’t want to fight your brother for obvious reasons but he comforted you as best as he could

- him and adrien get along so he goes to him sometimes whenever he needs input on something regarding you

- you drag luka into making plans to try to get a (unknown to them) double date with adrien and marinette

- you have definitely bet on when marinette and adrien would get together because nobody can deny that they will & it’s just a matter of when

- when you win the bet he takes you out for dinner (he definitely would have anyways)

- adrien will sometimes try to sneak luka in as a surprise for you during some of your things like piano lessons (luka has to be Way hidden but you’re just happy he’s there and that makes them both happy)

- you’ve tried to teach luka fencing before and that failed like. miserably. but to be fair luka tried to teach you guitar once and you were bad at that

- he prefers that you’re either out of the house or at his house because he knows the environment at yours

- he loves watching you hang out with everyone & also watching the interactions between you and adrien, he appreciates just watching you show your own ways of platonic and familial love

- invites you over for dinner most nights. sometimes invites adrien too

I'm actually on the opposite side of this matter, and have a quite strong opinion while being over there, and oh boy oh boy, I think "that" opinion will hurt some poor soul and I swear I won't mean to and pleaseee hear me out... 🥹🥹🥹

I enjoy the music, the aesthetics, the camera angle, the actions, Ladynoir obv, some scenes that are executed stronger than the series (eg: Marinette saves Master Fu; Sabrina's kindness toward the new girl; how they express Marinette's anxiety and the opening and initial character behaviors make sense with the overall settings) and GOOD MUSIC! (I think I said it twice)) But yeah, I tried my hardest to watch it with a blank mind, no judgment, no comparison, and in the end the plot and character devs are not for me...

However, I do think they will be an excellent stand-alone movie for any kind of audience and simply enjoy some action and cute romantic moments. Some scenes are not good for kids like did you see the way Adrien treated Marinette?? He did try to change but yeah I need 30 more minutes for that also did I mention Zag got the Chinese legend wrong with his version of intro-

For what it's worth I think the movie is wasted potential, I truly was so sad, but I do understand why many like it tho I still think the series is superior as of now, I love seeing good things inspired by it hehe but again, I won't jump on the hate train toward the series. If you decided to read this, you are a wonderful and tolerant person; I am so blessed to get such respect from you, I would never hate you for this. Sorry and thank you!!

I waited 8 years for this kiss between Marinette and Adrien! It was a long road, but very beautiful, and the wait was worth it! All their pleasant and not so pleasant moments taught me many things about love, obsession, sadness 🥹❤️‍🩹

Saw someone point out that arguably the worst aspect of the finale is how much of Gabriel's victory depended on Marinette deciding to allow it. Like she COULD have told everyone he was Monarch, or even just refuse to back him up. But she doesn't tell anyone aside from Alya and maybe Su-Han, I think? She lets everyone believe that Gabriel died helping Ladybug, and even pulls another Queen Wasp but maybe worse? While she insisted on Chloe and Audrey being together and giving it a shot, she's actively gaslighting Adrien into thinking his dad wasn't abusive. Nathalie and Tomoe don't interfere. Its implied that Felix literally CAN'T tell Adrien- but he DOES seem to tell Kagami. Who does nothing with it. Felix is also the one who spells out Gabriel's identity to Maribug and encourages her to end him at any cost in the first place.

Honestly it just goes to show how far the show takes sympathy for horrible men and the lengths they go to to fulfill their dumb Marinette Mistake Quota. In the first place, they’ve never actually acknowledged any of the parents as unrepentant abusers, they just frame them as parents that take discipline too far (ffs there’s a difference between being strict and being abusive but the show doesn’t want to touch on that), in Gabriel’s case, because he “cares too much”. Therefore, since Gabriel acts out of his own trauma or whatever, we should feel sympathy towards him and understand that his treatment towards Adrien stems from love 🥹 (not to be confused for when female characters act out of trauma, those deserve to rot). Combine this mentality with how everything Marinette does, no matter how objective or logical, is a world-ending mistake and you get the finale. She can’t win. She can have small victories, sure, but she can never win in the big picture. She always has to bend to what the universe’s demands, and what it demands is an shock value ending where the sympathetic villain is remembered as a hero and Marinette has once again made a mistake. She’s doomed by the narrative but not even on purpose. The narrative wants to make a joke out of her and pander to it’s now dead male villain, who is sympathetic just in case you forgot, and make the whole thing her fault. And you can be damned sure it’s going to be her fault. Because she has to make a mistake. The narrative doesn’t know how to move its story along otherwise. Another detail I almost forgot to mention is that Adrien is set up so he never gets a true happy ending from the start. The crew didn’t seem to consider this before settling on the plot the show would take so now they’re left scrambling for a way that their poor little uwu golden boy remains untainted by the realities of his family situation and the plot in general. So they temporarily remove him from the picture so he doesn’t have to face the truth, have his mom brought back as if she never went missing so he doesn’t have to face the truth, and have his horrible father remembered as a hero so, you guessed it, he doesn’t have to face the truth. In a way, Adrien’s very existence as a character that must never change is to blame for all of this. Because he can’t make any hard choices, because he can’t take any initiative, because he can’t face the truth.

I’m sure it’ll all explode at some point down the line and it’ll be portrayed simply as another one of Marinette’s mistakes rather than what it really is: cowardly writing.

TL;DR: the mess that is the finale is most probably due to the crew feeling overly sympathetic towards the villain, wanting to meet their Marinette Mistake Quota, and wanting golden boy to stay ignorant of the situation surrounding his family.

i finally watched the miraculous movie, and i really like it! its been a long while since ive watched the show (i think i stopped at s3?) and watching this was like a breath of fresh air, it really feels like im 16 again and watching ladybug and chat noir for the first time 🥹 while there were a couple of things i wasnt terribly fond of, i would still give it a solid 7.5/10. the animation was stunning, and i liked how tikki and plagg were the one that chose who they wanted as their wielder, though i really did wish adrien’s backstory was explored just a bit more, maybe as much as marinette’s but you can only fit so much in an hour and forty minutes so i get it. also, the songs are a hit or miss with me 😮‍💨 but overall, i can see myself rewatching the movie a bunch, its so cute and feel good, and i love my disastrous son and daughter <333

Hahaha, there's a channel here that airs episodes of Miraculous between 9pm and midnight and I'm not joking when I say that Nathan pelted down the stairs at 8:59pm last night because he was excited to watch it together. We had such a good time laughing at it and he had the funniest commentary ("Chloe looks like she follows Logan Paul" was a personal highlight). At one point Adrien grabbed Marinette's hand and Nathan GASPED! It was so great. I love that kid with all my heart. I will sit through literally anything if it gives me a way to engage with him. I'm just grateful that Miraculous is an enjoyable watch 😂

I gave her a more reddish palette/tones because since she wants to be ladybug so badly, contrasting Marinette who is cooler toned and yet is Ladybug, combined with her barely wearing red as a main choice in her outfits. I think it’s a cool lil trick! Like aesthetically Lila would match with the red suit more!

There’s also other sort of “imposter��� aspects of Lila: her lying about her background, her wearing red all the time despite not being the Ladybug holder, even her akumatized design for chocoau is based off of a ladybug kind of, and her akumatized object is a pair of earrings!! It’s so fun to create a kind of character that unconsciously is trying to build this identity for herself, despite the narrative making it clear that’s not who she is. Like a cruel irony!!

✨️ Out of the comments you’ve received on your fics, what are two or three of your favorites?

I've gotten more than a fair share of comments in my time which is actually amazing haha, though it's usually the very long ones that stick with me and make me feel like I've written something impactful. The more detailed and invested in the little parts of the story a comment is, the more likely I am to remember it. Recently @keylovesstuff left a very long comment on I'll Never Let You Go on the most recent chapter. Another comment that comes to mind is @lotsofdreamb0ats comment on Fresh Air a couple of years ago that just completely blew me out of the water with their insight 🥺 Also you've actually left me many comments too and I always get very happy when I see your name in my notifs! In particular I remember this comment from you, also from Fresh Air 😆

I really do appreciate all the comments I get 🥹 It's such a pure form of kindness to leave a comment on any fic for an author and for so many people to take the time, especially multiple times, to let me know they liked something I wrote never gets old. Sometimes it is a little overwhelming, so I hope you'll forgive me if I've ever not replied to your comment. Just know that I probably speak for most authors (unless they explicitly say otherwise!!) that comments are always a welcome form of interaction, especially with developing stories as well as stories that are years old 💕

🏷 Is there a tag you like to search for when looking for fanfics to read?

I usually isolate fics with the romantic pairings I want to read about, and usually I stick to the canonical or almost canonical ones😆 I love Mario/Princess Peach (in case you couldn't tell), but I also enjoy various other ships as I interact with the media! Link/Zelda is one I come back to a lot (and have one or two fics partially written for) but I've had to stay away from the tag until I eventually finish TOTK to avoid spoilers 😩 I'll also read Adrien/Marinette from Miraculous Ladybug just because the secret identity dynamic is so fascinating. Sheeta/Pazu from Castle in the Sky is one I'll read for and have also written for. Pretty much any Ghibli pairing haha, the dynamics are always so pure and wholesome. Besides that, any media I consume with an interesting enough pairing is what I'll explore. I know these listed pairings are very hetero of me lol I do love me a good (healthy) masculine/feminine dynamic but I am actually in search of more queer pairings to explore. I have been slightly getting into podcasts and enjoying the queer representation in the Magnus Archives and Welcome to Night Vale.

📚 Is there a fanfic or fanfic writer you recommend?

I think the most fascinating author I've ever come across goes by YarningChick on Ao3 and FFN. They primarily write for The Cat Returns and the pairing of Haru/Baron Humbert von Gikkingen. The stories they write are so intricate and tied deeply into their other interests, essentially transforming the pairing into more or less their original characters in a sense. Some of the crossovers I never would have dreamed of, but the writer makes it all very compelling. I would 100% read any original story they wrote as well. I hope to be a writer like them one day.
