I've been editing pretty feverishly lately, because this is my favorite part of my entire wip. I cut so much from this scene actually. Even though I cut out some lines I love I think it has more impact now (you should be proud of me).

Maybe that was the real reason he’d gone back to her again and again. She had been his first friend, his first family, his first lover. He’d only ever wanted her to have the same chance Gram had given him. The chance to start over. Seeing her the way she was now, injured, uncomposed, but with fierce determination still in her eyes, he thought he understood for the first time how broken she really was—how broken she had always been underneath the facade of cold mockery and nonchalance. He lowered his sword. “Whatever you hope to accomplish with all of this, you deserve more than that, Kaori.” His voice was quiet, pleading. He wanted her to understand. It didn’t have to be like this. “Come back with me.”
