hii omg thank u :’)) i’m going to try my hardest not to only list every single of my friends’ fics on here or ones that have been recc’d a million times even though they are all deserving of a million reads!!

you are sick (and you’re married) by @wiseatom: OK i said i wouldn’t list every one of my friends’ fics on here but thea’s modern coffee shop au immediately came to mind. everything she’s written has been so incredible but she characterizes will and max especially so well in this! delivering to us the cringefail will content we need for reallll <3 i am so in love with her writing and something about her style just makes so much sense. i tell her this every single day but it will never be enough, because her will is so precious to me and i need thea to quit her job and only write loser4loser byler for the rest of her life. read this! or else! (coffee shop au, modern setting, cringefail will byers tm)

king of my heart by @bookinit02: i had to restrict myself in choosing just one of haven’s fics for this list because i love her and i would put every one of her fics on every list ever if i could, but this fic. THIS FIC. listen. i don’t cry easily when reading fics but this one. i was reading it in the living room and my roommate came down and she said, “suni, are you okay?” and i said “yeah, why?” and she said, “oh, i thought you just got dumped or something :(“ and i didn’t know how to tell her that the reason i was eating ice cream out of the tub on the couch at midnight while crying quietly in my comfort hoodie and fuzzy socks was because of this fic. that’s all i have to say <3 (soulmate au, angst, fics that tear my heart out of my chest)

in from the snow by @parkitaco: every one of parker’s fics is near and dear to my heart, and i’ve gushed at them about it in their comments and inbox and asks but this was my most recent completed read and it has literally everything i could’ve asked for ! ice skating date! established byler! jewish byers!!! her characterization is incredible and her established byler is my favorite i’ve ever read EVER in my entire life ohhh my god. she has so many wonderful fics and i literally cannot choose a favorite because they’re all 10000/10s so do urself a favor and binge her entire collection of works if, for some reason, you’ve been living under a rock and haven’t done so yet :^) (winter fic, hannukah, established byler, mike wheeler’s pathetic inability to ice skate)

want for anything (and everything): the writing in this fic is so beautiful. like. i am a sucker for fluff yes but also i’m a sucker for fics that just rip my heart right out of my body with how well written they are. i was looking through my bookmarks for this list and i haven’t read this in a while but my bookmark notes said, and i quote, “EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS IS SOOOOOOO!!!!!! IM AHSJDJDJDJSKSKKSKSKSKDKDJ” which sums it up perfectly in my opinion. post s3 mike and will figuring out their relationship and this author has such vice grip on me because i immediately binged the entire series too!! (six unrelated fics but each one of them are so. SO. GOOD!!) (this series has a whole bunch of premises so i’m just going to let u all figure that out for urself by making u read every single one of them. lol)

selfless; self destruct: i find myself coming back to this fic a lot because i have such a soft spot for will and mike finding each other again and repairing their relationship. the writing in this fic is so heartbreaking and the will pov in this was so spot on! they have a whole phone conversation about toast that just. it was so small and so simply and so raw and so THEM that i literally had to put my phone down. i’m sure i recommended this already but i can’t rec this fic enough !! (angst, post s4, reconnection)

hanging on the telephone by @elmaxed: lumi’s writing is just so. i don’t know how to explain it but the way they write is so soothing and easy and it conveys so much emotion with such simple dialogue and prose. everything lumi writes is s tier and this fic was no exception !! i Need more will and mike talking on the phone during the 6 months will was gone and it was really incredible reading this from mike pov. the characterization, the dialogue, mike’s struggle with his feelings for will vs what he should be feeling for will,, literally just the whole package. read it immediately if you haven’t !! (post s3, phone calls, mike wheeler’s ongoing homosexual crisis)

who you gonna call? (mike wheeler!) by @andiwriteordie: OK everyone and their mom has read andi’s fics because she’s famous and a legend and also one of my best friends (!) so it would be redundant for me to shake you by the shoulders and demand you read her fics but. this one is just so so special to me! like this one specifically. every one of her fics is incredible masterful beautiful but THIS ONE IS JUST SO!! i can’t explain why i come back to this fic so many times (other than the fact that it’s perfect). college byler where mike is an ra and will visits him, except they keep getting interrupted by the students on mike’s floor. ugh. perfect. holding it so close to my heart forever and ever <3 (college au, established byler, interruption trope x100)

bonus!! these fics aren’t byler but they are some of my all time favorites and i would shout their praise from the rooftops for all eternity if i could :^)

in the morning i’ll be better: jancy jancy jancy jancy jancy !!! stoprobbers on ao3 has some of the best, if not THE best jancy fics i’ve ever read! the characterization, the plot, the tenderness ☹️ jancy usually gets sidelined in byler fics so i eat up every single fic where they’re the main couple and this is everything i need from season 5. nancy’s talk with steve, reconnecting with jonathan, UGH. just. everything about this. (reconnection, jancy talking their issues through, nancy whooping steve’s ass for the six little nuggets monologue)

a life in your shape: if any of you are stoncy readers, this fic is the gift that keeps on giving. nancy and steve get engaged, and jonathan, their best friend, is,,, he’s dealing! i don’t read a lot of stoncy just because i feel like fics that are my style are few and far between, but for writing like this, i’d read any pairing the author wrote for. i have a sweet spot for this relationship and the way that the chemistry between all three of them is so palpable and balanced is so rare and beautiful to read! 36k of some of the best writing i’ve ever read i swear even if you’re not a big stoncy fan this fic might just convert u :^) (2/3 of an established relationship, 3 way pining, weddings)

november and july by @lookslikefireflies: this is such a wonderful max and will fic and probably the best max character study i’ve ever read. GOD the writing had me clutching at my heart in beautiful, glorious pain. just so many lines in this fic that i think about so much. takes place between s2 and s4 and just. i literally have no words. the way this author writes max is so so special to me, i want to put this prose in a mug and sip it on a cold day. the relationships between will and max and also max and mike and even though byler isn’t a focus of this fic, you can really see will’s struggle with his relationship with mike post s3 even though it’s not through his pov. i just come back to this fic a lot when i’m sad it’s so warm and gorgeous and just. ☹️☹️☹️ (max character study, angst, fics that make me curl up into a ball and weep)

i’m honestly not the best at fic recs because i keep forgetting to bookmark ones i like before i close the tab but i hope you enjoy these :^)

𝜗୧ ּ݂⠀�� me yapping about byler ﹗

　　　⏤　 s1, mike is inside the house with wills letters and art. he handles them with such care (this is not only shown in s1, of course seen in the other seasons aswell), while in later seasons, with his own girlfriends letters, he treats them rather with disrespectfully as if he doesnt care about them, casually tossing them away in garbage cans or just disregarding them completely. u would think that he would treat both with such love, or atleast caring more for els letters, but no. when he see mikes room in one scene, u can see many of wills drawings either hung around or somewhere just in his room (under his bed, on his desk, etc.). nothing is rlly in his room that could be from el which is odd. in els room, we can see literal photos of mike practically everywhere (on her desk, hung up, etc.) .. mike doesnt wanna reciprocate doing the same tho ?? just having letters and stuff just from will ??? im onto u mike. back to the scene of mikes room, he has a mirror on his closet door which could mean that he is in the closet himself and inside the closet there is a red-ish orange shirt/jacket/whtvr which could relate back to s1 will as on his jacket there was a rather similar color to it AND the light of the closet is on meaning that once more it could mean that he is in the closet, aswell having a sign pointing towards the closet saying one way, AGAIN meaning that he could be in the closet. anyways. if u stop at just the right time, still in mikes room, u see a blue owl. a blue owl can symbolize endless compassion towards others and this owl was last seen in s1 where mike and will were quite big characters (and still are) (this owl also could link to vecna but that is not what we r talking abt rn ...)

　　　⏤　 the beloved van scene. literally immediately, we see mike staring so obviously at wills lips and looking him up and down (keep this in mind cause im gonna tell u at the end of this paragraph how many times this has happened LOL). as will hands mike the painting, after asking if will had made it, light starts shining through the window a little more, insinuating he was happy that will painted smth for him. when will mentions that el had commissioned it, the lights becomes more faint and mike looks so much more disappointed after, obviously liking the idea of will making it just for him better than it being made cause of el asking it to be (he likes the idea that will was thinking of him, to put it more simply, but instead it was only made cause of el). as will points to the painting, u can see just barely how they touch, and as the camera points back at mike he is biting his bottom lip. ur getting a little to obvious mike😭 with will mentioning mike being the 'heart' of the party, it could be such a barely noticeable way to say 'im inlove with u' or smth along those lines. as will yaps abt that, mike literally has his breath hitch ??? just at will saying he is the heart and that he is holding everything together ?? the light begins to return meaning that mike became genuinely happy as will said that (sunlight is used as a way to describe a mood, and seeing how it is shining, it means its more lighthearted/friendly/happy ... whtvr. probably shouldve said this earlier ^_^). "when youre different, sometimes u feel like a mistake," will says, perhaps meaning that he feels wrong for liking mike, his male bestfriend, but this could be quickly disregarded as will says, "but u make me feel like im not a mistake at all," which could still mean smth similar to that tho if rlly thinking abt it. the sunlight comes back once more, again giving this lighthearted feel to whats around as that is being said/after being said. also, mike is gulping saliva SO MUCH😣 R U OK POOKIE ??? after a bit more yapping, will says, "el needs u mike, and she always will," with more light shining through. he mightve wanted to say, "i need u mike, and i always will." but idk. mike responds with, "yeah?" with a small smile, needing confirmation that will truly thinks this. will nods, of course confirming his words. as this happens, the light appears again a brighter than previously. if u look just close enough into mikes eye, a small heart is in the reflection of it (THIS IS KINDA A REACH BUT IDC TBH). after this heartfelt moment, mike looks down at the painting will had given him (taking one more quick glance at will with a smile) as will turns away, looking out the window, beginning to start crying—likely sad that mike has not realized his feelings and how much he loves him—which mike surprisingly doesnt notice, only giving a small look before going back to look at the painting. mike looked at wills lips/looked him up and down 7-8 times ... MIKE GET IT TOGETHER HELPPP. ALSO: with the painting that will gives mike, mike is aware that it was for a 'crush of his' or smth of wills, making mike possibly flustered in a way (<- mike had read the note, so he already knows the information abt it meaning to be for someone he likes).

　　　⏤　 s4, when mike is calling out to el, the vines around her neck only tighten, showing that she doesnt believe rlly anything he is saying. will has to practically pressure mike to say 'i love u', which even then mike still hesitates and stalls slightly before rlly saying it. when mike rlly does say it, his facial expression shows off that he is lying. when lying, u normally look away or smth like that, and before saying 'i love u', mike of course does this. as mike says this, the vines once more tighten. el does not believe mike truly does love her. mike says that he is srry for not saying ily enough and that it wasnt because he was afraid of her ... this same season he was literally afraid of her because she hit someone with a freaking rollerblade, so he is lying, and has said multiple occasions 'what is wrong with u' and been scared of her. a little after, mike literally recites what will says during the van scene, obviously not knowing what to say. notice, the vines r STILL tightening. mike also says, "i feel like my life started that day we found u in the woods," right infront of will knowing full-well that day was also the day when will ... vanished. he literally contradicts himself in multiple occasions with this sentence, his life obviously 'not starting' that day he saw her in the woods. mike calls el 'superhero' once more, just more of superhero idolization (is that what u call it), only ever praising/appreciating the quality of her powers. el wants love, not idolization. mike is so homosexually repressed that he cant even notice anything else about el besides her powers, as if thats all she is good for. more lightening strikes in els pov, showing that she KNOWS he is lying, vines STILLL tightening. mike is just saying stuff that he knows el wants to hear, pretty much. el only breaks when both seeing and hearing that max is in pain (guys do we like elmax on tumblr) and not her own bf spilling his love out for her (lying or not).

　　　⏤　 BODY LANGUAGE. MIKE WHEELER BODY LANGUAGE. when in wills room and mike is apologizing (woah), he lifts his brows. if u do research, an eyebrow flash is a usually unconscious social signal, a raising of the eyebrows for about a fifth of a second that communicates a wish to approach another whom the sender recognizes and is preparing for social contact. an eyebrow flash can be used to communicate a desire to approach someone and prepare for social contact, add emphasis to a message, similar to a facial exclamation point or question mark, be used as a form of flirtation, and be a reaction to fear, surprise, disbelief, or disapproval. in this case, it is likely a more flirty way, if using context clues (mike smiling, the voice lowering, holding eye contact, etc.). in this same scene, mike when he sits down literally CHECKS OUT WILL😓 anyways. a smile along with a eyebrow flash (or raise) could mean that u have an romantic interest in them. during the digging scene (dig dig dig guys), mike just looks at will. for no reason. will wasnt even talking and mike proceeded to look at him. when will goes to look at mike, making eye contact between the two, mike gets embarrassed in a way and looks away (or a panicked response), giving a triple take at will before beginning to dig genuinely. a triple take is more 'extreme' form of the double take. it usually happens when two people are trying to check each other out at the same time and keep making awkward eye contact, looking away but not without giving exactly three glances towards the person once more before finally looking away. during the same scene, mike proceeds to lick his lips. when youre attracted to someone, your mouth may produce more saliva. licking lips is a way for people to show interest in someone, adrenaline and norepinephrine can cause physical symptoms of stress, such as dry mouth, when youre around your crush, and thinking about saliva can cause you to create more saliva, which can lead to more thinking about saliva. mike licking his lips whilst looking at will shows more evidence of byler not being one-sided. back to the van scene, mike has his lips parted, hitched breath or sharp intakes of breath, and flared nostrils. these r more common signs of showing that u like someone or r interested in them in a more romantic than platonic aspect. he holds eye contact the entire time which is usually done when attracted to another. he also blinks alot during this scene which is a sign of thinking nervously or anything like such. quick blinking can be seen as a sign of flirting tho, but in this case im not sure it is and mike is just nervous with will. blinking can increase when excited (mentally) abt smth, and mike is likely excited at just the thought of will alone. once more, his brows r raised, but stay raised. raised brows can show interest in what is happening or being said (in this instance, its said). he has such a longing look as he stares at will aswell, occasionally glancing down at his lips which can show he desires to likely kiss will, but obviously not being able to do so. THERE R SO MANY MORE INSTANCES BUT TO MUCH TO WRITE ... hope u enjoyed this english lesson on words :3 (im literally a nerd help me)

　　　⏤　 during the s4 scene where mike and will r having a argument in the skating rink, mike begins to walk away. will calls out to him, saying, "but what about us," and u can see mike take it the wrong way. 'what about us' can mean many of things, and mike took it as a more romantic way, leaving him to stop and turn around, showing off his face. looking closely, he looks confused and possiblynervous. there wouldnt be any reason to be nervous at these words unless u took it the wrong way, which mike, again, did, and confusion would be more normal. if mike didnt like will, he wouldnt have thought anything of it, of course. he says, "what?", in a more different tone, aswell. also, this might be a stretch, but looking at the lighting on their faces u see yellow and blue, which r the colors the two r linked with. after the argument, going to see what el had done, the lights r blue and yellow, as expected. mike goes under two yellow lights before stopping to the left of el, under a blue light, whilst will goes under two blue lights before stopping to the right of el, under a yellow light. they were under eachother lights, before ultimately ending up back to their original colors they r 'assigned' to (this can be also called color-coding or simply just a color (scheme) those characters stick with or seen with the most). this could mean that they r running away from this feelings of some sorts. while mike usually sticks to blue and will usually sticks with yellow, sometimes they will exchange colors, and occasionally wear green which is a mix of the two. when mike visits will in the hospital, he wears green ,,, when mike thought that will had died, he wore green. they wear green when they want to remember eachother as its a mix of the two colors. ANOTHER BIG STRETCH but when mike gets socks they r GREEN. mike mightve been thinking of will whilst getting socks. also, prior to this at the airport scene, mike gets el YELLOW FLOWERS and wears a YELLOW JACKET and his hat has GREEN IN IT and is wearing GREEN PANTS and a BLUE SHIRT ,,,, am i exaggerating. guys i might be delulu but, like. also, BACK to the skating rink, mike says, "were friends. were friends," as if trying to push it both onto him and will, once more experiencing that internalized homophobia, insisting on the fact that they r just 'friends'. mike also feels bad for making will feel bad, just going back to the topic of finding el to subside the fact he just made his bestfriend probably sad. also, just stands at wills side and doesnt try to comfort el at all after el hits that goober in the face ??? nor does will ???

How do you think Elmax's first time would be like?

Okay I'ma do this in a fade to black kinda way bc I don't care for writing heavy NSFW.

I imagine it's kinda casual, maybe El asks what sex is after they are watching something and someone mentions it. Or maybe they were talking about it in sex Ed at school. Max explains that wlw is different then mlm sex but it's the same idea. She keeps doing the 👉👌 hand gesture, which makes El giggle. Max explains toys and why females use them mostly but how they are more for all people.

Eleven then asks something Max doesn't expect, "Can we have sex? We can't get pregnant. Only feel good.." Max blushes hard which El giggles at and agrees.

Its a little tricky at first because it's a first time but after they put on some music and dim the lights they figure it out as they go. (Max uses some words she's heard come from Billy's room when him and Heather were in there which works a lot.)

Afterwards it's the best with them, cuddles, bubble bath, lotion, tv, everything is perfect.

Okay I just need to put this somewhere, I just need to get it out and this is my blog and I can post what I want. Yes I am an It and Stranger Things blog but if you've been following me for a while you may or may not have noticed I interact with both those fandoms differently. I sure as hell post more about It and that can range from silly little nonsense to ficlets to character and ship headcanons.

For Stranger Things I stick to like fandom theories and discussions and will occasionally post a headcanon about a character or a ship. I post more about Stranger Things when I'm crossing it over with It ironically. I tend to stay away from anything about the ships most of the times and I don't go out of my way to contribute a lot of solely Stranger Things content as I do for It.

There's a reason too. I love rarepairs, I think they're neat. They're not for everyone and they don't have to be but I like them. And while they thrive in the It fandom, they literally go to die in the Stranger Things fandom. Which is real ironic considering the Stranger Things fandom is massively bigger than the It fandom.

The Stranger Things fandom is so draining to interact with and so I hardly don't. I protect my peace. I never scroll through the tags anymore and I'm careful about the Stranger Things mutuals I keep.

Don't get me wrong, I love Stranger Things, I love the characters, the story, and I love quite a few ships. Elmax and Byclair are probably my top two, and I'm a big fan of madwheeler, ronance, and wheelclair. When it comes to the big ships, I enjoy both Mileven and Byler casually- and by that I mean I honestly do not care who becomes/stays canon (canon doesn't matter much to me anyways) and I don't actively seek out content for them but when it comes across my feed I enjoy it.

I've said the Stranger Things fandom is draining and I'm not going to just complain without saying why. ANY ship that is not one of the big ships, Byler, Mileven, Ronance, Lumax, ect, their tag is filled with people being like : "Best friends!! I love them platonically!!" and it's just?? So not what that tag is for? The Stranger Things fandom has created platonic tags, use those. And especially if it's a ship that contains Will that isn't byler- people will insist that those two can only ever be platonic. As if Will isn't allowed find interest in a different guy besides Mike- this is fandom, people are allowed to enjoy ships that aren't the big ones.

It goes beyond just the ship tags. If I'm in the Lucas Sinclair tag I am not there to see Mileven or Byler shit, I don't want to see Lucas as a fanboy for either ship, I want to see content for Lucas. God help the Eleven Hopper tag,

But like I said, I keep my peace, I don't scroll through the tags anymore and I limit my interactions with the Stranger Things fandom,,,only everytime I post the rare character or a ship headcannon I will have people reblog it with either A.) Saying some shit about them being 'omg besties!' when clearly I meant the ship in a romantic light or B.) If it's a character headcanon or a ship one, people will use it to shit on other ships. THAT'S NOT WHAT MY BLOG IS ABOUT.

Okay I don't know- this turned into a ramble that I'll probably delete later. I just had to vent and also a lot of only Stranger Things blogs have been following me lately and I felt the need to explain why post how I post with St vs It.

ronance: this one is very prevalent but nancy cannot cook for shit ok. i just love the comedic potential of nancy wheeler, the most intelligent and decisive and talented person robin knows, cannot set foot in a kitchen without SOMEHOW burning something. i also love the fact that it references to nancy not really ever wanting to live a life like her mother’s, so she just never learned to cook.

elmax: so yk how max showed el the wonder woman comic right, so i was thinking one day after that scene el would have been like “are there any more superheroes like her??” and max would have brought out an entire stack of comics like that and she would show el all of them and el would be like so surprised and happy as max shows her all of them, and when el moved away max lent her some of the comics so she’d have something to remember her by (even though she would never forget about max anyways)

Mike blinks, rolling over and rubbing his eyes. "Huh?"

Will is lying on his back in the dark, staring up at the ceiling with a contemplative expression. His eyes flick to Mike's, just briefly, and he smiles a little. "Sorry, were you asleep?"

"I- yeah, it's the middle of the night, of course I was asleep."

"It's not even eleven-thirty."

"You know what I mean." Mike shoves his face into Will's side, flinging an arm across his torso and tugging him closer. "I'm tired. I biked all the way here in the dark."

"Yeah, to see me," Will says, sounding all too pleased with himself. "So here I am. Answer my question."

"Will, it's so late," Mike complains, voice muffled where it's pressed against Will's t-shirt.

"Eleven-thirty, Michael," Will repeats, unimpressed.

Mike groans, removing his face from Will's side in favor of glaring at him. "Okay, William. Why did I ask what?"

"If I wanted to be your friend."

Mike blinks down at him, propping himself up on one arm and watching Will's eyes trace over his face. "You want to know the reason why I asked a question when I was five years old?"

"Hey, you said it was the best thing you'd ever done! Don't act like you don't remember."

Through his groggy haze, Mike can't help but be a little endeared by the annoyed quirk of Will's eyebrows, the smirk resting faintly over his lips and the pillow creases on his skin. He dips down to kiss Will's forehead quickly, brushing a thumb over Will's jaw. "I told you," he murmurs, face hovering right over Will's. "I was all alone. You were alone too, so I just... asked."

"I couldn't have been the only one who was alone, though," Will presses. "Why me?"

Mike remembers that day so clearly. He'd spent the better part of the morning pouting and trying not to cry, secluded to a quiet corner of the classroom and wishing he didn't have to do this, that he could keep playing Uno in his basement with Nancy forever even if she was turning into a bit of a brat, lately, that he could be exempt from the ridiculous notion of hanging out with people his age, or whatever. He also remembers that all of those feelings were, ultimately, bullshit, because in reality, before Will Byers became a part of his life, Mike was terribly lonely.

So recess had come, and he'd decided he might as well take action. He'd scanned the playground, looking for people like him, people that were alone or that were wearing the same color as him or who just looked nice, even. He wasn't trying to be terribly picky. He'd seen at least five other lonely kids, sitting in the dirt or holed up on the slide or playing with their own toys in the corner. None of them seemed right. They were all too loud or too quiet or too annoying or too weird, even if Mike was and still is, in fact, weird.

Then he'd spotted the swings, and the boy on them, and when he'd tried to ration away why he couldn't go up at talk to him, tried to give in to his fear and stay quiet and lonely forever, he'd drawn a blank. He couldn't think of a reason why this boy - this boy in an old yellow t-shirt with a bowl cut like Mike's who was gazing at the clouds like they genuinely interested him - wouldn't be a good person to talk to.

So he'd gone up, and he'd been terrified, but he'd asked. And Will had said yes, and that had been that. Friends forever, or something along those lines, and somewhere in the ten years since Mike had fallen in love with him, and that too had been scary but when he tried to rationalize it, he once again drew a blank because - at the end of the day, it just made sense. Of course he would fall in love with Will. He had no reason not to.

"I... I guess it just made sense," Mike whispers now, meeting Will's eyes in the dark and quiet of his room. "I couldn't think of a reason not to."

Will smiles, brilliant in the night, and traces a finger over Mike's collarbone. "So it wasn't love at first sight, then?" he teases.

"Love at first sight isn't real," Mike says with conviction - his breakup with El had been proof of that. "But there was- a connection, I think. Like there was this- string, a bond or something, that drew me to you, and I chose to follow it. To tie the knot."

He expects Will to, like, laugh or mock his word choice or something, but Will is dead serious when he replies, "I'm glad you did."

"Yeah?"

"Yeah. I don't believe in love at first sight either, but I think that- it's just. Pretty, I guess. To think that there was something there, like you chose to take the first step and then from there on out we were just wrapped up in each other."

Mike grins, dipping down to kiss Will gently, warm and solid against him in the dark. "I'd happily stay wrapped up in you forever," he says softly, resting his forehead against Will's. "Even if you're an asshole who wakes me up in the middle of the night to ask about destiny."

"That is not what I asked I-"

"Will, I'm just teasing you."

Will huffs, breath warm against Mike's face, and Mike can't resist kissing him again, quickly. Will melts into it despite himself, arms around Mike's waist. "String, huh?" he murmurs.

"Sure. Or whatever else you want to call it."

"I like that just fine," Will decides, shoving his face into Mike's neck and relaxing into him, and they drift off to sleep, all wrapped up in each other.

El doesn't know a lot about fate, or God or any premise of inevitability. She understands the concept well enough - Mike won't shut up about it, actually - he and Will tease each other about it when they think no one is listening, about swingsets and choices and unbreakable bonds, and El never really knows what exactly they're referring to but she knows it means that they love each other, and that they feel that this was inevitable.

She's not sure how she feels about that concept - it's fine for them, maybe, because they have this grand love story or whatever (at least according to Will, who rambles to her about Mike an awful lot, even if she kind of enjoys listening just because of the way his face lights up) but after having so many choices stripped away from her as a child, El isn't so sure she loves the idea of some cosmic deity deciding things for her. She'd rather take control of her own narrative.

That being said, she does get the part about being in love, and not wanting to ever conceive of a reality in which she isn't, and in that regard she supposes it's fine.

"Why do you think we became friends?" El asks now, rolling over on her bed and letting her head hang off the end, looking at Max upside-down.

Max glances up from the magazine she's been idly flipping through, a small smirk on her face. "We're not just friends, you know," she says, like she always does, and El scrunches her nose at her.

"You know what I mean," she retorts, which is true - unlike most people, Max always knows what El is trying to get across without having to hear all the words, always smiling and nodding along and supplying a word when El can't think of it, not trying to play dumb like Mike used to or interrupt like Will has a nasty habit of doing, or blink at her hesitantly and vaguely concerned like Joyce, well-meaning as she is, usually does.

Max flips the magazine shut, rising up on her elbows to kiss El's nose from her upside down vantage point, and El giggles. "We became friends because you're an incredible person and I liked you."

El widens her eyes. "We did not used to like each other, though."

"That's because you thought I was trying to steal Mike from you, which is laughable because I think I'd rather die than steal Mike from anyone, and had I been around before all that I would have told you to stop watching so many shitty soap operas."

El frowns. "I like soaps. They are romantic."

"They are, but they also instilled a weird jealousy complex in you that was totally unnecessary, so." Max smiles, tapping El's nose lightly with a finger. "Also, I never had a problem with you. I thought you were, like, ridiculously cool."

"Cool," El echoes, smiling. She likes that word - it feels strange in her mouth, but Max says it like a compliment and Max, as sarcastic and derisive as she can be, never says anything she doesn't mean. "I think you are cool, too."

"Thanks, babe."

Max goes back to her magazine, and El stares at the opposite wall as the blood rushes to her head, contemplating.

"Max?"

"Hmm?"

"Do you believe in fate?"

Max actively considers it for a moment - something she doesn't do for many people - before answering, "I don't know. I believe in connection, I think. Like a- spark, that you can have with someone, that, like, draws you to them, but I think we still have control over what we do with it. Does that make sense?"

El turns it over in her brain, lifting a hand and making the pencils spread across her desk float up into the air and bounce around the room. Max watches with the same vaguely awed look she always does, grinning. El grins back.

"'Spark'?" She asks, tapping one of the pencils against the ceiling. "Like a fire?"

Max laughs, sitting up properly and holding out a hand. El drops a pen into her hand, and she reaches out and begins tracing a pattern over El's exposed shoulder with it. "No, not literally," she says, hair tickling El's neck as she leans closer. "It's just, like. A pull. Like there's a string connecting you, and you can choose to pull them closer with it or just leave it how it is. Or cut it, I guess, but that's kind of bleak." She sits back, admiring her artwork on El's skin, and El cranes her neck to look. She can just barely make out a set of flowers and a small heart doodled there, and she smiles. Max would never claim to be an artist, but she certainly isn't a bad one.

"And you felt that? With me?" she asks, refocusing her gaze on her girlfriend.

"Sure I did," Max says, like it's obvious. "The first time I saw you you were wearing that black getup with the eyeshadow and everything and you looked so cool, and I don't believe in love at first sight or anything but I felt something, you know? And then you totally wrote me off which- hey, don't look at me like that, I didn't say I was mad!- you brushed me off and I was like wow, okay, she can take care of herself, great. And then I decided that I would win you over."

El smirks, flipping around and resting her arms on the edge of the mattress to gaze down at Max properly. "Win me over," she repeats.

"Convince you to love me," Max teases, and El reaches out a hand to brush a strand of hair out of her face.

"You are very easy to love," El murmurs as Max tilts her face to rest against her hand. "You do not think you are, but you say nice things without even trying."

"Yeah, well, 'course I'm nice to you," Max grumbles, kissing the side of El's palm. "I love you."

El grins teasingly. "I love you too. I am glad you did not choose to cut the string."

"Okay, it was a flawed metaphor, I get it-"
