you guys do happen to continue the day after and become really good friends. you asked for his discord and he gladly gave it to you. you chatted everyday never missing a part in each others lives. you even learned he had six brothers! (their parents must’ve been having a field day!) about seven months after you two met, you guys did a face reveal. you were not expecting him to be so pretty, or have indigo hair.

a year or two after becoming great friends, you get summoned in a portal in front of a lot of handsome men. you mumble to yourself after the redhead explains your situation that L3V14CH4NtheThird needed to see this shit. so you take a picture of the guys and send it to him with the caption;

i stared at myself in the mirror with a soft hum as i brushed my teeth, dancing subtly as i blasted music into my earbuds.

i spit out the toothpaste and hummed to the music before immediately shuttering at the sound of my phone vibrating beside me. the smile that spread across my face was indescribable as i read his name.

i smiled softly and typed away, slowly making my way to my closet as my eyes didn't leave the screen.

"umm... matt and chris... there's nick too, but he works the first half of the day. they're triplets." i chuckled. my dad raised his eyebrows. "yeah, i had the same reaction." i replied, smiling softly at the thought of the three and how helpful they had been to me with the move and adjusting to the new job.

"what time will you be home?" my mom questioned, and i shrugged. "are they picking you up?"

i nodded and smiled, stretching. "yeah, matt is picking me up. and im assuming chris will be with him." i mumbled, humming softly as i checked my phone.

i heard a few honks outside before i smiled at my parents. "sounds like they're here!" i began walking out of the room. "bye, love you both!" i shouted, and my mom seemed to follow me to the door.

"keep me posted," she whispered, and i smiled as i lightly hit her arm.

"i will," i replied and gave her a soft side hug before heading out the door.

with a few steps to the car, i felt a wave of happiness rush over me. "thanks for picking me up," i mumbled as soon as i slid open the back door, smiling to myself and shutting it behind me.

"anytime," matt replied, turning to me to make sure i was buckled before he faced the front and began driving. "how was your morning?"

"did you sleep well?" chris quickly asked after matt, turning at me and smiling softly.

i smiled softly back and shrugged. "in all honesty, i woke up and then got your text, so it was okay! looking forward to today," i started, "and i slept really well. i actually feel very well rested today." i finished and smiled, looking out the window to look around. a thought came to my mind as i smiled at the two. "how did fortnite go?" i asked, resulting in matt and chris both looking at each other with a knowing glance.

"we did alright," matt started, but chris quickly interrupted him. "no, actually, if matt knew how to play the game we would have done better." he spat, resulting in matt giving him a shocked gasp. "are you kidding? i got more elims than you could even could on your hands," he responded.

i listened mindlessly to their banter as i watched matt pull into the driveway of where i assumed was their home.

chris unbuckled and got up, moving to quickly get out and open the door for me. i furrowed my eyebrows and smiled softly at him. "thanks," i breathed and followed chris to their front door.

"mom, we brought home a friend," matt stated a bit louder as we walked through the door. who i assumed was their mother, stepped out from the kitchen and smiled warmly at me.

"hi, y/n is it?" she asked and carefully set her hands on the sides of my arms. she smiled brightly, and i smiled softly back.

she seemed super sweet, like an amazing mom to the triplets.

"yeah, y/n," i mumbled back and smiled. "so great to meet you, thanks for having me and stuff," i chuckled and her smile only seemed to widen if possible.

"oh, don't worry about it, sweetheart. you're welcome always. i'm mary-lou, their mom." she stated, motioning her head to the two boys behind us. i smiled softly and nodded before chris and matt lead me to their room where they typically hung out.

i looked around and smiled warmly at the posters on the wall of things they liked, the cleanliness of the room, and the things that piqued my interest just as much as theirs.

"i made chris rid of all the soda cans sitting around, so it would be clean for you," matt mumbled to himself, which rewarded him a smack in the arm from chris.

"hey, some of them were yours too. and you didn't have to mention the mess," he seemed to lower his voice in the last part, glancing at me.

"don't worry. before i moved, i was kind of the same way," i replied and smiled. i stood awkwardly at the doorway, unsure if i should sit or where to sit.

chris gently pat beside him. "here, wanna sit?" he offered, and i nodded softly. i carefully sat beside him on the couch in the room, a comfortable distance from him. matt was setting up the tv before he moved to sit beside chris.

"ugh, i don't know," i mumbled and stared at their wall in thought. my mind wandered. "i really like comedies, some action movies and sometimes horror or sci-fi," i mumbled, looking between the two.

"okay," matt began, "i asked for a movie, not every genre," he joked, and i scoffed. "at least you aren't picky." he mumbled and leaned back, going through movies.

i watched mindlessly as he scrolled through a bunch of movies, but one in particular made me jump to my seat.

they both turned to me, and i felt my face grow hot.

"sorry, i know it's cliche, but it's a good movie.. and a classic," i started to defend myself, and they both shrugged.

chris glanced at me and smiled softly, before looking around and back at me. "do you want a blanket or anything?" he questioned, and i blinked a few times before shrugging.

"i mean, if you're offering-" i replied with a soft giggle.

he just watched before smiling warmly. "i'll grab it for you," he mumbled as he sat up and went to grab a blanket that was nicely folded in his room.

i watched as he left, looking at matt and shooting him a soft smile before focusing on the movie.

chris came back a few moments later with a blanket and unfolded it, carefully draping it over me. i blushed softly and smiled at him as he sat back down beside me. "thanks," i breathed, and he nodded softly.

i felt warm. not because of the blanket, but more because of the feeling of chris being so close beside me. i knew i liked him, i had established that. i was just nervous. i leaned back into the couch, my head accidentally touching his arm that was resting on the back. i glanced at him and mouthed a quick apology to him, before turning back to the tv.

god, anyone would have to be out of their mind if they thought i knew what was going on in this movie right now. i had seen it a million times, yet for some reason every word felt so unfamiliar and it was probably because this blanket was drowning me in chris's scent. i blinked a few times before i slouched against the couch, trying to focus more on the movie to avoid any awkward interactions.

the movie was almost over, almost at the fun and dramatic ending when matt got a call on the phone.

"hello? oh, yeah we're upstairs. oh sick... sounds about right. yeah, i'll be right there. bye," matt pulled his phone from his ear as he stood up and smiled at chris and i. chris scoffed as he whipped out his phone, looking to check his missed calls. matt had left the room at this point. i glanced at chris's phone screen to see if there were as many missed calls as matt had mentioned, but i almost felt like i was intruding by doing so.

chris seemed to notice this though, and smiled as he scoot over. he carefully wrapped an arm around me and motioned his phone towards me, indicating it was okay to look.

i blushed deeply as i stared at chris, blinking a few times.

"is this okay?" he asked softly, his voice a bit raspy now from focusing on the movie for so long.

i quickly nodded and smiled shyly, leaning into his embrace. i looked at his phone as he pulled up tiktok, scrolling through a few of them.

chris carefully leaned his head against the top of mine, and i kept my focus on his for you page, which resulted in a few laughs from both of us.

i'm still holding off final judgement until the gameplay today, but seeing some stills on twitter kind of helped me solidify what i found so off-putting about the style in the companion trailer

although before i post those, a few counter arguments because i'm already tired of ppl bashing the ppl who aren't vibing with it, and my head is clear enough to put these thoughts down:

"cinematic trailers rarely look like the actual game" - true to a point. however: 1) typically cinematic trailers strive to look like a higher definition version of the game, which seems to be the opposite here. in the case of DAO and DA2, i would say the cinematic trailers actually strived for more realism, not stylization, as that was the trend at the time. 2) this is a cinematic trailer, but it is also done in the game engine so it's not unreasonable to assume that the end product is gonna look somewhat similar 3) this was supposed to be their best foot forward so suddenly going "don't worry, it's gonna look better in-game" is just a bad marketing move. it's not on the audience to give this company the benefit of the doubt (particularly in light of all the shit that has gone down there in the past decade)

"not everything has to be super realistic!" - agreed! not liking elements of this particular style doesn't mean i'm opposed to stylization in DA at all. i think DA2 is much more stylized than DAO, and not only does it look nicer, it looks more distinctly dragon age. DAO visually is also very generic, especially for its time. i still love the almost painterly look of DA2, even all these years later

and i think DAI has issues with the character models, especially the uncanny valley disconnect between the really stiff animations and realistic faces (having played it within the past year, they've aged pretty roughly), but in terms of environment and armor and whatnot, it did build off the style presented in DA2 in a way that effectively modernized it for that era. it did go for a more realistic look, but it was cohesive and still distinctly dragon age

"people reacted like this to DA2 and DAI's trailers too" - no, they did not, lmao. DA2's trailers were the reverse--they looked more realistic than the actual game. now there was some backlash against the stylistic choice in the actual game. i remember david gaider talking about it in a panel at dragon con in 2012--apparently ppl were upset that the companions looked like they were made with cosplayers in mind, which i thought was an interesting criticism. but no, the trailers did not get this sort of response.

and DAI's trailers used a lot of in-game footage, and the cinematic ones were both pretty accurate to the game and well-received by the audience. DAI's marketing was also absolutely bonkers and nonstop for like 9 months before the game was released, which in hindsight i think was way too much, but in terms of visuals, we knew exactly what we were getting.

"you guys just think anything with a style to it looks like fortnite" - lmao, okay, yeah, describing it as fornite is probably unfair and inaccurate, but i know for me, i kind of use it as a shorthand to reflect my general dissatisfaction with the way so many 3D styles (in both games and movies) just have this bland, cartoonish look to them. the pixar-ification of everything. i just don't like it.

and the logo with the bright purple and overly smooth text doesn't really help here either. i think a less saturated and darker purple paired with a grungier font would also help in making this feel like less like fornite season 3458345: dragon age avengers.

plus it was originally gonna be a live service game and i think that it still has some of that dna artistically

SO ANYWAY

these stills, which i think are also in-game engine but im not entirely sure if they're from cinematics, gameplay, or just renders but they seem to be in-line with the trailer:

and seeing emmrich and to a lesser extent neve in these pics solidified why the stylization didn't work for me on a visual level (never mind it being paired with the light-hearted planning-for-a-silly-little-heist vibes)

so when i first saw the trailer, and i saw varric, i was like "nice"

he looked like a higher definition, older version of a DA2/DAI hybrid of his model. he looked really good. i thought harding looked good, too. it did take me a minute to realize who she was, but it really wouldn't be a DA trailer if we weren't left wondering who tf a returning character was lmao (remember the confusion over alistair's appearance in one of the DAI trailers? this is actually tradition now)

but as the trailer goes on, the style doesn't even stay consistent--it just gets progressively more cartoonish right up to emmrich, which is the exact moment that made me go WHAT

he looks like a cartoon character. the hard lines in his face, the stiffness of his hair, his overall proportions--he looks like he should be a villain in a pixar movie. like i'm digging his overall vibe and as a concept of a character design, i love it. but this execution of it next to fellow old wrinkled man varric looks so off

and then we go right into davrin who is beautifully rendered and designed--he doesn't look out of place next to varric or harding

some characters have the soft, wispy hair while others have hair that looks like a hard shell with lines carve into it. some characters have finely detailed wrinkles while others have thick, cartoonish ones. some characters have realistic proportions while others have more exaggerated features.

stylization is only effective when it's purposeful and consistent, and from what i've seen so far, it's not. it's all over the place.

so there's my thesis about why i dont like the art direction in the trailer lmao

and like i've been saying since it dropped, i am reserving full judgment for the gameplay reveal, but based on the other stuff bioware has teased, i'm not expecting this aspect to change too much. i've seen other ppl who were on the fan council thing say the tone in the game is more in-line with the tone in the other games, so maybe that'll help smooth out this disconnect

you know i think i had gotten kinda lucky finding so many great to ok totk reviews bc i went to search yesterday (my god is youtube shit at searches now man, i want to see stuff for what i searched for not 20 things other people watched) but there truly is some utter shit there

in this essay i will defend my bbg because i get her better than yall. my credentials are that i love literary analysis and i think im at least half decent at it, and Ive been paying attention to Hope’s story since chapter 5 season 1.

Okay so. First things first, I don’t believe that being a ‘mary sue’ is a bad thing inherently. Anakin Skywalker is the fucking most powerful guy in the entire star wars universe for no reason other than his blood said he is and he is one of the most beloved characters in that franchise. his son luke destroyed a bazillion dollar monument to the military industrial complex on his first flight in an X-Wing. neither of these characters get shit from anyone (hm i wonder what one thing these two have in common that hope doesn’t. hmm)

Secondly. Hope has a character. She has motivations. From the moment we as an audience are introduced to her, we are told that she is anti-authority (she is described as a rebel in almost every bit of content associated with her during season one, and she directly fights against the literal symbol of authority in The Society.) This is the same drive that causes her to fight against Zeus, as what is more authoritarian than a literal God-King. She also cares greatly about freedom and choice. Go back and listen to her dialogue during the Mysterio quest-line, it is the angriest we ever hear her. She is deeply, deeply offended that this fucking guy has brainwashed half the island, that he would strip people of their liberties.

I think people forget. How Zeus and Doom were defeated. Hope didn’t just waltz up there, punch em once, and boom. Done. No, the Loopers beat Zeus and Doom. It was an island-wide effort, spurred on by Hope. She is a leader, that is her role in the story. (also; the Greek God’s powers in fortnite are very ill-defined, considering the Society fought against Zeus directly and lived seemingly unharmed. So.)

People also say Hope has no flaws. And that’s just. Wrong. Granted, her most apparent flaw isn’t clear until Season 4, but it’s Impostor Syndrome. There’s a big difference between being a rebel leader, and being the Prophesied Hero of Fate, granted powers by Pandora and the fucking Oracle of Delphi, and that really gets to her! That’s her arc across the entire season is dealing with this feeling of not being Good Enough to be the hero the island needs. But in the end, she’s able to do what she does best and be a light bright enough to rally the entire island together to fight and defeat Doom.

I get not liking characters, but honestly. a lotta the hate for Hope comes off as just kinda baseless to me. I don’t want to pull the misogyny card against individuals and i’m not going to but i do believe that she would have been received far better if she was a man. Maybe im just a little bit too invested in this storyline but. eh.

OKAY TRACKLIST BREAKDOWN!!!!

so i have now had breakfast and coffee and my brain is on and FUNCTIONING lets get into this

putting a break here incase youre scrolling and dont wanna read all of this lol

so first things first i was watching tiktok and people were making a big deal about how its split up into sides similarly to midnights now i do believe that taylor posted the back cover of the vinyl and that the cd will be different but i could be wrong. even if it is split up like this on purpose on every physical copy this does mean that it is a two LP album instead of one like midnights

one vinyl (both sides) can hold up to 44 minutes of music on it so we can roughly estimate that the full album will be about an hour and a half long now if each side is 22 minutes long each track on side a, b and c should be about (if each song is in equal length) 5 and a half minutes long. side d has 5 songs on it so some of those might be short to fit in the manuscript

i have also seen people compare this back cover to the back cover of lover which is absolutely breaking my heart and im sure thats not gonna be the last lover comparison i see about this album

okay so lets dive into this track by track

SIDE A

track one: Fortnight (feat Post Malone)

okay so first of all this is obviously not a reference to fortnite the video game but i think all of those jokes are funny as hell. the fortnight shes talking about here is a reference to the measurement of time as seen down below google states that fortnight is a british term for two weeks.

according to wikipedia fortnight is derived from the old english term fēowertiene niht, meaning "fourteen nights".

now onto post malone i actually listen to some of his music from time to time. he mostly does do rap but his most recent album austin (which is coincidentally also taylors brothers name, but is also post malones real name) is listed on google as alternative rock, indie pop and synth-pop. so im unsure of what vibe post will bring to the track. i think its also surprising she placed one of the two collabs as the opening track. i think the vibe for this track will probably be either a story about what happened in a certain two week period or about what is going to happen in two weeks from the songs time standpoint (if that makes sense lol)

track two: The Tortured Poets Department

A TITLE TRACK!!!! now obviously we dont know much about the album yet so we cant really try and figure out what the title track will be about so im just gonna do a little yippee for having a title track

track three: My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys

this is a Whole fucking title good lord the only thing that really comes to mind when i think of this title is the lyric in better than revenge where she says “soon shes gonna find stealing other peoples toys on the playground wont make you many friends” which is if im not forgetting anything the only lyric as of now where she’s referred to being someones partner as someones “toy” but that lyric itself is a metaphor for relationships being playing on a playground. this will probably be a sad or angry song about how her ‘boy’ goes around breaking/hurting his favorite ‘toy’ aka taylor

track four: Down Bad

okay now down bad if you dont know is a slang term to describe how badly you have fallen for someone (mostly used in a more sexual nature in my experience than romantic) so this song will probably be about how badly she is for the love interest of the song

track five: So Long, London

alright new track five lets go! so this is obviously seeming to be a reference to track 11 on lover, london boy. now like taylor said when she announced it this album has been a secret for two years so we dont know when these songs were written or who they are about but i feel like it is safe to say this song and most of the other will be about said london boy [i personally do not care who a song is about and it is not taylors job to tell us who a song is about and that isnt the point of her music, but i will be commenting on the joe breakup bc that seems to be a large idea of this album so far] i can see this probably being about the break up and possibly sampling some music from london boy like she did with cornelia street and youre losing me

track six: But Daddy I Love Him

okay so the first thing i thought of when i read this track title is the scene from the little mermaid where ariel is fighting with her dad over the eric statue and im gonna be honest i dont remember the plot points in order of this movie BUT i do remember when taylor dressed up as ariel for her new years party in 2019. so given what we know this will probably be a song about maybe her fighting/arguing with her dad over how much she loves the love interest of the song regardless of who he is/how he treats her

track seven: Fresh Out The Slammer

okay so im not sure what this song will be about bc i dont think taylor has ever been to jail before so it would probably be metaphorical type of “im back bitches” type of song im assuming this might be a bass heavy maybe more rock leaning song and if it is a “im back bitches” it might be about the amount of time she was single for with the ‘slammer’ being her old relationship

track eight: Florida!!! (feat Florence and the Machine)

alright so as we all know this album has been in the works at least for two years but we dont know when each song was written so take this with a grain of salt but the tampa eras tour shows were the first shows after the news of the joe breakup dropped. so this song might be about her feelings during those shows. for those that want to know these were the surprise songs for the tampa shows in order.

okay so my main curiosity about this track is the question mark in the title because guilty as sin isnt much of a thought provoking title to me but that fact that its a question is interesting. the current vibes im getting are that this might be a more sexy song? but i have no idea here

okay so THIS is giving big taunting energy like “aww who would ever be afraid of little ol me 🥺 youre afraid of me?” which im Hoping thats what the vibes are bc that would HIT but i can also see it being completely different as well

track eleven: I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)

oh my GOD this one sounds like its gonna be sad. so this is obviously a reference to the common seen online phrase “i can/could fix him” which as ive seen is normally used towards people who are attracted to hot fictional characters that usually have a lot of emotional baggage or are villains (i saw it a lot when ballad of songbirds and snakes came out about young snow) so this song will probably be about her promising that she Can fix him and really will despite ‘him’ being broken or maybe even possibly a bad partner

so i saw and rb a post earlier about how its very interesting that this is already an acronym which i completely agree with because taylor knows we are no strangers to turning her song titles into acronyms. so loml does usually mean love of my life but i think because its already an acronym it might be something different (i saw someone earlier say it might be loss of my life instead of love)

track thirteen: I Can Do It With a Broken Heart

this one i think will kill me personally. i think this one will probably be about her continuing to go on with life (and possibly the eras tour) post joe break up i think this one will either be a sad song or a light beat ‘picking myself up on my feet’ song

track fourteen: The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived

this has so many implications but personally i think the interpretation shes gonna use for this song will be about how the said man is small emotionally and just as a person (i doubt she will talk about physical shortness in height or other areas)

track fifteen: The Alchemy

now im gonna be so real here i have no idea what this one will be about google says that alchemy is an older version of chemistry so maybe she will talk about the chemistry or alchemy she has in her relationships?

track sixteen: Clara Bow

alright Clara Bow! okay so i dont know much about old hollywood so i am NOT the person to deep dive into what this song will be about but all i do know about her is that she was The “It” girl of the silent film era so im assuming this song will probably be like the lucky one and talk about the rise to stardom and being the Biggest Star Of The Time

when nick found out he had covid, the first thing he did was tell his brothers as well as his best friend to take a test to see if either of them were sick as they had all hung out together. when it came down to the first set of tests all of them were positive except chris.

y/n wanted to go home she really did, but at the same time that was the last thing that she wanted, she wanted to be by her best friends even if they were all sick, she wanted to get through this together. plus matt insisted on her staying with them saying that she shouldn't be alone.

he opted for her to stay in his room as it would make the most sense considering that the girl more then likely caught it on the same day that he did. what she didn't know however was the boy had harbored a little crush on the girl and thought that maybe this was the week they would be able to hopefully mend out their feelings for each other. he told his brothers this plan and they as well thought this was a stupid idea that would end badly but he insisted so they let him. which led to where they are now

the first couple of days into the quarantine was a mess, the two were miserable and couldn't even get up to eat. on around day two nick had informed them that they would each have to vlog separately in their rooms together for the wednesday video to be out in time. the others agreed which has led them to be vloging about their days in quarantine.

"again? really" matt sighed but he did feel bad because she did look really bored in his room, plus he had a soft spot for the girl

"yes, please, we can finish saltburn" she once again tried convincing him

"fine" matt told the girl getting into the sheets and pulling up youtube.

even though she was sick she couldn't get away from watching anything to do with taylor swift. as the intro to miss americana and the heartbreak prince played y/n cuddled closer to matt making him lean into her body heat. as the concert movie went on he couldn't help but admire the girl laying next to him. her hair was a mess and looked like it hadn't been washed in days, her skin was breaking out a little because of her little skincare, and she had slightly dark under eye circles, however she looked gorgeous to the boy.

she kept singing along to the songs while matt just looked at her in awe the whole time. when the cords of the 1 started to play y/n got up to pause the TV, confusing matt in a second

"i thought you loved folklore" matt asked

"aww you pay attention" y/n teased the boy

"what? of course I do, now why did you pause it? is there something wrong?" matt asked concern laced all over his face

"no...you just keep staring at me like im this beautiful princess that just got out of the water" y/n  told the boy

"is that such a bad thing" matt asked once again confused

"no its just i look like a huge mess right now and you're looking at me more then you normally do" y/n told the now blushing boy running a hand through her hair

"i don't look at you. what??" matt defended scratching the back of his neck

"oh come on yes you do, its okay though im fine with it, if you don't want to watch this we can watch something else" y/n told him letting the TV switch to saltburn

"y/n, that's not what i said" matt told the girl

"no its fine"

sense neither of the two had seen the movie and didn't know what was happening they didn't even think that they were watching this movie with their best friend until a wired scene came up which made matt immediately switch it back to youtube, which made y/n more confused

over the next couple of days matt had been filming himself for the video which has been making y/n go crazy. see like matt she also harbored secret feelings for the boy she just didn't think he felt anywhere close to what she felt until she watched him do push ups.

"okay! that's it, i cant take it anymore, you cant just do that and expect me to be okay with it" y/n sighed in frustration

"what are you talking about" matt asked

"first you're really wired with me while we were watching the eras tour, then you turned off saltburn, now you're doing push ups!" y/nrambled

"i still don't understand what you're talking about here, what am i doing wrong" matt asked really confused at his best friend right now

"because i like you, you idiot and you keep giving me these signals that you might like me back but at the same time not even acknowledging i'm there sometimes. like sometimes i believe you actually like me then other times i think oh wow maybe he doesn't actually like me and those little stares from across the room are really-"

y/n gets cut off with a pair of lips on hers. the kiss was slow but filled with passion, she kissed back immediately when she realized what was happening. years of pent up tension finally being released into one kiss. matt was the first to break the kiss, his hand still on her check.

"i like you too, trust me i really do" matt told the girl leaning back in

the two kissing for about a minute longer breaking it, needing air

"is it wired that we just confessed our feelings for each other and kissed while also sick" y/n asked throwing her head back with laughter

"yeah probably" matt said also joining the laughter

"when were not sick anymore let me take you out on a date" matt proposed to the girl

"i like that idea" y/n said leaning back into the kiss

safe to say that they didn't get much filming done after that, and when nick didn't have as much footage for the video as he wanted he instantly called matt. and him saying that the two had finally confessed, which made nick call chris and the two exchanged words of surprise and excitement to their brother.

Thoughts on Summer Game Fest

Excited to see new projects for sure, but i hope folks can see that this isn't some beautiful replacement of the old corporate showcases, its just the next generation. Ask yourself, is this really any different than any other glorified ad space? Ask yourself, why is it more common to see non-creatives like CEOs on stage instead of the artists, writers, and programmers? Why is it that, of the creatives we do see, its folks who already have some flavor of fame? Where are the indies that arent backed by big publishers? Ask why is it that I can see more unique, original projects from a 20 minute walk-around youtube vid of an indie alley? Ask why half of the titles showcased at summer games fest will have a number after the title. SGF and TGA are built on fame and safe bets, under the guise of celebrating creativity. Most of the stuff you'll see will already have ads all over the internet, made by the biggest publishers in the business. Those games arent bad or evil, but they are established already.

This show is currently a spotlight for the big players, and a small mercy is given to a few smaller projects in between as the spotlight moves from fortnite to call of duty, from assassins creed to fromsoft. The festival celebrates success - not creativity. Creativity is messy and risky, and SGF stays away from this fairly clearly. Would SGF ever announce a game like Balatro, from an unknown? Not a chance. But would SGF love to showcase Balatro2? Guaranteed. SGF loves success, and is allergic to the risk inherint in creativity. And its why im so over these big shows. They are a big spotlight that highlights success - but the biggest changes to games and art come from the weirdos, the fanatics, the zealous creatives that have bad posture, that don't have a thousand employees, that don't have a studio.

FLAWLESS SEGWAY im really proud to be dropping the demo for my own game Death Machine into the steam next fest on monday. It's not a stage that only the successful get to ride, it is an actual gathering of people showing off their hard work from all walks of life. There will be good games, bad games, weird games, pretty games, ugly games, big games made on a zillion dollars, smol games made on no dollars, games made for fun, and passion projects galore. And THAT is where you will find "unknown dev makes smash hit in a basement", not SGF.
