which ironically is kind of the best way to get good at literary analysis tbh! I wrote a post about it here but that was more on how to organize thoughts / write meta > finding the things to write meta about (aka the "this feels gratuitous" draft is still in my drafts as we speak — might be time to clean it and some others up and post it).

In a lot of ways there tends to be like.... two main avenues for analysis? Which is an oversimplification but is making sense to me in the moment, and I'd specify the divide is

Treating characters like people (characterization, relationships) vs treating characters like tools (motifs, symbols, plot structure, dynamics).

Ideally, a narrative merges these two things so completely it's hard to separate, and I think TDP does an extaordinarily good job at it. I'll call this marriage Theme since its the main idea(s) of the Story/Narrative and everything should at its best be working together in service of the Theme if you want something cohesive.

I'll use Callum and Rayla as an example just cause I think they exemplify a Lot of how/why this all works and works as well as it does.

If I want to write about Callum and Rayla's internal psyches, i.e. where does Callum's temper or Rayla's gruffness come from? I'm going to look at them as people. They're going to have consistent triggers, responses, contradictory emotions or emotional reactions, etc. This is like the how you wrap a present, the colour and feel of the paper. Any character in a story can technically have any kind of personality, i.e. an assassin can be sweet and snarky (like Rayla) or stoic and rigid (Runaan). That's not all they are, of course, but the characters' personalities often times affect how and why we ship what we do, or have certain favourites, etc.

For example, Callum's primary Narrative Purpose is to be a human mage. He's there to explore the range of possibilities a human who wants/chases magic in the story can have, and we pretty closely follow his magical journey of feeling powerless, struggling and achieving primal magic, and guilt and desperation that drives him to dark magic. But absolutely none of this means that Callum needed to have a temper.

To see the way a character trait can be married to a motif (repeating symbol) let's look at Rayla. Rayla can be secretive — not telling people everything and being closed off about her emotions — and often leaves to try do things on her own, occasionally flat out disappearing. These are her personality traits (characterization), most of these psychological aspects come back to not feeling like she deserves help or not wanting to hurt people, thereby hurting her relationships. She's a person.

At the same time, these traits help us as the audience understand and grasp how the series treats the Moon and its arcanum. The Moon is a symbol, and it's all about changing faces, secrets, and illusions. We don't know whether the ideas for the Moon arcanum (which seem to be loosely taken from Tarot) or Rayla's personality came first, but it's clear that at some point they merged to reflect each other.

If I want to talk about Rayla as a person, I'll talk about how her personality/choices affect her relationships. If I want to talk about how she reflects her primal or how she choices affect the plot, I'll be talking more about structure. If I want to talk about how both of those things say, in a speculative meta about Callum connecting to the Moon arcanum as he understands Rayla (and himself) better, then I'd be talking about both simultaneously (theme).

But those are all like, examples of how you can break stuff down that you see. How do you go looking for stuff / know what to break down?

1) Pick a piece of media, ideally one you already feel very comfortable and familiar with. Book, show, whatever. This familiarity means you can focus less on the processing the plot and more about other elements of the story. Then watch or read the thing but try to pay attention to like, a few pre-chosen ideas or themes. It could be the theme of power, or — I'm thinking for something like ATLA - how the characters reflect their elements (Aang is evasive and avoidant, and air is light and breezy, etc).

For a TV show in particular, it can mean breaking things down scene by scene in an episode to see what the anchoring idea of it, i.e. 1x06 in TDP is all about Soren, Claudia, and Rayla keeping secrets. Soren and Claudia keep their secrets and isolate themselves, because isolationism in the series is usually Bad; Rayla shares her secret, because working through problems and letting people help you (being collaborative) is Good, etc. These messages are pretty consistent throughout the rest of the show as well.

If applicable, I'd recommend starting out with stories where you already know the ending and/or even better, the story itself is aware you know the ending from the beginning (i.e. in Titanic, you always know the ship is going to sink). This can help you pick up on dramatic irony (everyone emphasizing the ship won't sink) as well as setup (the movie making sure we know there's not enough boats, people making the boat go faster, the moment the ship hits the iceberg literally separating Jack and Rose from each other to set up what happens later, etc).

2) If you wanna learn how to analyze, to a certain degree you have to learn to shut down your feelings and biases. This doesn't mean that feelings can't affect how you analyze, or dictate what you want to analyze (I feel very positively towards TDP and therefore I want to deeply analyze it! same with Rayllum) but it does mean leaving "I want this thing so it has to happen" at the door — or vice versa.

The best example I can give is a hypothetical one. For example, it kind of doesn't matter if I — personally — think that Callum and Rayla have known each other that long to know each other well. (I don't, for the record, but bear with me.) In the Text of the Story, they know each other incredibly well, and more to the point, thematically, their senses of self are so incredibly intertwined that them affirming each other's senses of self is like... the only place we could be going. Rayla is "Rayla saves people," so by saving a possessed Callum she's saving herself, and if she goes to kill him, she's likewise metaphorically going to be killing herself (her own sense of identity), etc.

Or for a non-ship example, my real life feelings about monarchy don't matter. I don't like monarchy, I think most western monarchies are crap... and I'd be silly if I brought those feelings into TDP's discussion of monarchy, because they're using monarchy as a vessel to discuss things like power, responsibility, and growing up, particularly for Ezran and Janai (and how often do we see non-white monarchies in media anyway?). And if I want to engage with those themes, then I have to engage with TDP's discussion of monarchy.

It's kind of like how even if something in a story grosses you out or makes you uncomfortable, you have to be really damn sure that wasn't an Intentional writing choice on Purpose or a chance for self reflection before it's launched as a complaint.

Doing this kind of awareness and predictive work also means you'll get better at predicting where stories might be going and leaving ahead of time if something is going off the rails / not going your way (in a bad way).

3) Growing a list of common themes and symbols that stories tend to have. Birds = freedom, chains = entrapment and coercion, grief, identity (particularly in coming-of-age stories), etc. If you have a loose idea of what to look for, that means you can also start to look at the specifics of how stories use these themes/symbols. For example, Midsummer Night's Dream and Romeo and Juliet both feature a theme of love amongst forbidden lovers, but the first is a comedy (love conquers all, even if it makes people foolish) and the second is a tragedy (love is not always enough to conquer hate/violence/our worst impulses).

For example in TDP, although it was in the background in s1-s3, light and darkness has now become a very overt motif (repeated symbol) in both dialogue and imagery. Tracking what those things represent or how the show complicates their meaning (light isn't always good, etc) can help indicate where certain characters or plot beats are going.

This can also mean trying to notice consistent metaphors (i.e. dark magic is often consumed by the caster for spells / referenced with cannibalistic language; dark magic corruption is increasingly seen as spreading sickness/illness) and then being on the lookout for the next time(s) they show up. So much of media literacy / critical thinking is just being able to explain/figure out why you think what you think (with evidence) and it's always a skill that can be nurtured and improved

He got used to it after a while, as he would rant to you about his little creations (mainly duck creations such as the fantastical back-flipping rubber duck!! That spits FIRE!!!!) he would scratch behind your ears or would pet your hair or play with your tail, fluffing it up as he would rant on and on about what interested him. He got very comfortable with such contact!

Bro is PROTECTIVE like not in a "TOUCH THEM AND YOU DIE 😡😡" kinda protective more like "omg be careful with them istg BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL" type protective, almost like he is with Charlie but a little more!

He is a little shocked when you first reveal your full wolf form, it's not like he doesn't see people like that no, no, no! She loves how your ears flick around whenever something catches your interest or whenever you hear something and get excited over it, she just finds it adorable!! Asra

pure, radiant joy lights up his face as he gathers you in his arms and squishes you close. He is So Excited for this baby, he’s only known about them for five seconds, but the love he feels is all-encompassing and unconditional. Because this isn’t just Any Baby, it’s Your Baby, with him, a being created from your love for each other, a brand new member of your family. He probably cries a bit, huge happy tears that catch on his eyelashes and make them sparkle.

regardless of who carries, he starts nesting almost immediately. The furniture seems to move every time you look away as he searches for an arrangement that “feels right.” He can’t be trusted to go to the market by himself without bringing back mountains of pillows and blankets and stuffed toys. Whenever you manage to convince him to sit, he works on knitting baby clothes, and more blankets, and more stuffed toys. He would do anything to keep this baby safe and happy and warm.

at some point it occurs to him that something could happen to you two after the baby is born. He becomes a roiling ball of anxiety until you talk to every important person in your lives and make a plan ensuring that no matter what happens, there will always be someone who can take care of the baby. That helps him settle down some. The fear is still there, but he can at least function now.

with your help, he starts making a memory book, a collection of pictures and mementos and letters from you and your loved ones. It starts out like a traditional scrapbook, but the longer you work on it, the more creative and ambitious the project becomes. Each page ends up with its own enchantment: some sparkle when you touch them, some release sweet smells, some produce sounds, like the voices of everyone who wrote a letter. It’s a work of art, a complete masterpiece. When it’s done, Asra feels he can finally rest easy knowing the baby will always have a reminder of how much their family loves them.

for fun, let's say you do want the baby. Nadia loves and respects you too much to ignore what you want, so as shaken as she is, she will listen and consider it. You’re really going to have to ease her into the idea, though — she has A Lot of concerns and fears regarding motherhood. First and foremost, she has exactly zero experience with babies. She’s never gone out of her way to interact with one. What if she’s no good at it? What if she does a terrible job and never bonds with the baby and ends up estranged from her own child? There’s just so much that could go wrong.

you’ll have to remind her that she wouldn’t be doing this alone. It’s your baby just as much as hers, and you’re not going to let any of that worst case scenario stuff happen. Sure, the two of you might not be Perfect Parents, but that doesn’t automatically doom the whole endeavor. You’ll be allowed to mess up a little. And it’s not like you can’t ask for help! They do say it takes a village to raise a child, after all. With the friends you’ve made and the resources you have access to, you’ll be very well supported.

it takes a while for her to really believe it. She needs a lot of reassurance, but so long as you’re patient and understanding of her anxiety, she will get better. Once she realizes she can channel her nervous energy into projects, she absolutely thrives. She draws up designs for the nursery, scrutinizes piles of fabric swatches (babies go through A Ton Of Clothes, good on her for starting early), plans the birth down to the very last detail, and with each project she finishes, she grows a bit more confident in herself, a bit more confident that everything’s gonna work out, so long as she has you.

it takes a minute for the news to sink in. Julian is a doctor, so he Should know a thing or two about the signs of pregnancy, and he really Should have seen this coming, but… well, denial is a hell of a drug. Not that he was doing it on purpose; he’s just very good at being oblivious at the worst of times. He was so caught up in You, so distracted by the brilliant beauty of your relationship that he forgot actions have consequences.

after the initial shock fades, he falls face first into Panic. What is he panicking over? Everything. Every little thing. He panics because the pregnancy was unplanned, so he never got the chance to put together a prenatal care plan. He panics because he has less than nine months to put together a birthing plan, as if it’s really going to take that long to figure out. He panics because babies need stability and routine and he doesn’t know if he’s ready to settle down yet, and even if he is, he has no idea Where he wants to settle down. He panics because this is a big responsibility all of a sudden and he’s not confident in his ability to handle it. In fact, he’s certain he’s gonna fuck it up somehow, so he spends a lot of time panicking over that.

you’d think his medical knowledge would be a blessing at a time like this, but it’s really more of a curse. Sure, he knows some good remedies for morning sickness, but he also knows everything that could potentially go wrong at every stage of pregnancy, which means he’s going to go into a frenzy every time an unusual symptom pops up. You’re going to have to be the voice of reason here, and it’s not gonna be easy because he Will argue with you, but it’s just because he’s scared. Talk to him about that fear. He’ll calm down some once you get him to talk about it.

underneath all the anxiety, though, he’s so fucking excited for this baby. He’s so excited to be a dad, even if he doesn’t think he’ll be good at it, because he gets to raise this baby with You. He is so excited he gets to start a family with You. The first one isn’t even done cooking before he suggests a second — maybe even a third, somewhere down the road in the nebulous future he always struggled to picture while he was on his own, a future that now erupts into full color before him every time he closes his eyes.

based on the way his face contorts in abject horror, you might think Muriel is unhappy with the news, but he’s not so much Unhappy as he is Overwhelmed With Dread. While he’s come a long way from viewing himself as an irredeemable monster, he’s still not completely convinced that whatever spawn he ends up producing won’t be the Vesuvian equivalent of the anti-Christ, either as cosmic punishment for his “sins” or because someone he faced in the coliseum cast a curse upon his firstborn (which, knowing this city, isn’t statistically improbable).

give him the space to talk and he’ll eventually spill everything that’s worrying him. He’ll try to apologize for letting this happen, saying he understands if you don’t wanna take the chance, and when you tell him it’s not like that, not at all, he’s caught almost comically off-guard by the idea that you may actually Want to have a kid with him. You’re gonna have to explain why, because he doesn’t get it. Living with him, supporting him, loving him, that’s all one thing, but having a baby with him? And then Raising that baby together? He’s gonna ask you if you’re sure just about every day for the first two or three months.

as I’m sure we all expect, he doesn’t think he’s gonna be a very good dad. He claims he has no natural instinct when it comes to children and childrearing. If you bring up the chickens, he’ll say it’s not the same at all, in fact it’s ridiculous to compare chickens to human kids, but you can tell from the way he pouts that he knows you have a point. He’s just so sure he’s gonna do something to fuck this kid up big time. It doesn’t even cross his mind that he might be able to give this baby everything he didn’t have growing up, not until you suggest it. He seems to chew on the idea for a very long time.

following that, he’s still anxious, very anxious, about everything that could go wrong, ranging from the baby being born with goat horns to the two of you dying before they can understand what happened to their parents, but he’s more willing to challenge his intrusive thoughts and be proactive. You work together to make a contingency plan for the kid, ensuring they’ll have a happy, healthy life no matter what happens. Muriel goes out of his way to interact with kids and babies so he’s more comfortable with them (and less afraid of hurting them accidentally), and one day he’s startled by the realization that he actually, maybe, sort of, kind of, against all odds… enjoys spending time with them. The well-behaved ones, at least.

the more ready he feels, the more relaxed he becomes. His regular brand of affection takes on an even more doting, protective quality. When he’s not spoiling you with hugs and kisses, you can usually find him working on the baby’s crib and/or mobile, which he’s decided to design and carve himself. Sometimes you catch him lost in thought, smiling at you softly for seemingly no reason. If you ask him about it, he’ll deny ever making such an expression, then eventually admit he’s glad you didn’t let him give up on the baby. His anxiety warned him of the potential bad, but it also prevented him from seeing the potential good, like how he can share the stories of his people with a new generation. If not for you, there’s so much he’d go without, not even realizing how much he’s missing. That’s why he smiles at you — after everything he went through, you gave him a new life.

Portia

a gasp escapes her lips as tiny tears of joy twinkle in the corners of her eyes. Portia was the first to notice and recognize the early signs, so she’s really not surprised — she’s Beyond Delighted. She’s so Ecstatic she can barely contain herself, hugging you, then the doctor, then you again, whispering in your ear that she can’t wait to have a baby with her favorite person in the whole world.

she’s so excited to tell everybody the news, she’s practically bouncing off the walls. At first she wants to tell as many people she can as fast as she can, but then an idea strikes her: why not make an event of it? All the most important people should find out first, so why not invite them over for dinner and make the announcement then? She starts planning right away, asking your opinion on the menu and decorations. The whole thing turns into more of an ordeal than you expected, but even so, Portia (with your help of course) executes it flawlessly. The dinner is delicious, the ambience is impeccable, and at the end of the meal every guest gets a pastry in the shape of a rattle. Portia glows as she makes the announcement. Julian cheers and sobs. It’s perfect.

good luck getting Portia to sit down now, though. There’s so much she wants to do before the baby arrives. For instance, she thinks the whole cottage oughta be cleaned out and reorganized. Kids are very good at getting into things they shouldn’t, and if this kid is anything like her, they’re going to get into Everything, so it’s a good idea to take inventory sooner rather than later. Oh, and speaking of inventory, you two are gonna need to stock up on some baby essentials. Portia is more than happy to take the lead on this. She could spend all day prowling the market for toys and clothes and other supplies, nearly weeping when she finds especially adorable things, like tiny booties embroidered with cat beans on the bottom.

while the days are busy, the evenings are sweet and slow. You take this time to have serious discussions in less-than-serious ways, usually between soft kisses. Portia wants to show the baby the world. She spent so much of her life knowing only one place, she wants to give her child the chance to experience more. That being said, there’s no reason to take trips with an infant who doesn’t know what’s going on and won’t remember. She suggests staying in Vesuvia for the first few years, and after that you can play it by ear, see where the road takes you. To be honest, she doesn’t much care Where she ends up, so long as you and baby will be by her side the whole way.

When he was transferred to another world, nobody noticed he was a female at birth which made him extremely happy, even when he came out,everyone was understanding and still wanted to fuck him .

He seems clever, at least, even though he keeps chattering. Christ, he’s so young. The suit is Stark’s handiwork, he’s been planning this. Have they been in contact before? No, the child seems overexcited, but jet-lagged. The webs are thematic- and there’s been nothing in Tony’s files about this sort of materials engineering. The little spider is clever, then. Totallyahooman, the owner of these characters, said I should make a post about her characters so you all know what you're getting into hehe. They're all cats btw, and I'm on my phone so there's going to be mistakes. Most likely.

Apparently these characters are called the "meme team" because Totally made four of them (Toby, Oliver, Gingerale, and Milo) for an animation meme and fell in love. They didn't even have names until like a month later ig lmao

Toby: He's really friendly, but unlike Two-Tone understands boundaries - even if he's a little hyper and annoying. Toby will happily drop anything for his friends. Basically the generic "good guy" Character (But Totally says he had an edgy phase in a cat's version of teen years). He has three little sisters, who always insisted on playing with him, which didn't work well with his edgy phase. Totally told me he doesn't have a father, but he has a mother that looks a lot like him and she's the sweetest darling ever. Toby's the peach-ish, brown and white one.

Two-Tone: Speaking of Two-Tone, the wittle baby man omg I love him. Totally said he was originally made for the weird animation memes, because she had the nice one, the anxious one, the dad-friend, the angry one and the murderer. And yeah, you can use an edgy killer for weird/edgy memes, but she wanted WEIRD. And so Two-tone was made. But he apparently evolved into a really sweet cat who just doesn't understand how to communicate with people. He's been friends with Toby since childhood (kittenhood?) and seemingly came from nowhere. No parents at all. Toby's family basically adopted him (though I kinda ship them???)

Oliver: Anxious boyo. He's the blue one with big worried eyes. I also love him, he's so adorable. Anyway- Oliver's worrying about everything, constantly. He's also really easy to pick on because he'd be too scared to defend himself. Actually, Cinder tries killing him the most out of the team, which forces Gingerale to protect the bb. Totally told me that when she draws the two, she can't help but draw Oliver huddling behind Gingerale for protection and I live for that. Gingerale: The ginger cat. He's a very grumpy boy and hates all things fun. Actually that's not true, but he's very tsundere. He'll bully his friends, but as soon as someone does it, he's going OFF on them. He somehow always catches Cinder when she's trying to kill the team, too which would he so much fun to see. Totally said Gingerale's used to being ignored because he was one of the middle kittens of TWELVE. YOU CAN'T MAKE THIS SHIT UP RNAKKD. kinda sad to imagine tho, poor bby.

Cinder: Finally, the one I kept mentioning. The gray and white gorl. To explain her murderous ways, Totally gave me a run down: As a kitten, Cinder was severely bullied by three older ones. Their mothers didn't do anything to stop it, and Cinder's own mother was too deep in self-pity due to her mate leaving her. All because he didn't want kittens :(. So, Cinder didn't get anyone to defend her from these bullies. One night, Cinder's mom stands up and straight up leaves. Totally gave a small, sad detail of "So, wondering where her mom was going, Cinder followed after her. But Cinder's mom turns only to push the kitten away, giving her an angry glare before leaving for good. Cinder's never seen her again." And i- that's so depressing. Anyway, Cinder finally snapped and killed one of the kittens bullying her. Finally the mothers cared, but only for their own. They exiled Cinder from the area, and Cinder complied. But she never forgot how nice it felt to finally have some power and since then, she's just kinda- killed cats. Totally finished it with "Cinder found the meme team and thought they'd be easy, but Gingerale's a good match against her. So... She's just for comedy's sake now I guess". That was long, sorry.

Milo: Big boi. Big soft boi. I really like him, but also I couldn't help but think about Milo from Pokemon Sword and Shield. I told Totally this and she went "Yeah, I made him before the game was officially out and before I played it. I had no idea" And I'll just accept her word. He's cute tho, the gray tabby. He's bigger than his friends and is super fatherly to them, even though he's around their age. Always making sure Oliver isn't so scared, Two-Tone and Toby are out of trouble, Gingerale actually socializes and the twins are recognized more. Very sweet.

Aidan: Speaking of the twins, they're the last two I need to tell you about! First is Aidan. He's the one with sunglasses. And also the spikier fur, and he's the boy. I like him because he thinks he's really cool and popular, but he's not. In fact Totally always forgets the twins exist. She's getting better at it, she says. She told me that Aidan is that one "I'm so cool" character who's calm and collected usually, but if a girl (or boy, she claims their sexualities are never specified and up to interpretations for the creativity) flirted with him, he'd DIE. I need to make hcs on this.

Nadia: The pretty girl. Basically it. She's really nice and understanding, but always finds a way to insult her brother casually. The twins have always been there for each other, but at the end of the day they're siblings. They're going to argue with each other. In fact, Totally said she likes to take a bit from her own siblings and say things like "Oh yeah, and Nadia one day would be all 'Aidan, brother, listen to me. I love you, but you're ugly. No girl would like you' And Aidan turns to his sister, slightly pulls down the sunglasses that somehow stay on his face and glances at her up and down before sighing, 'But Nadia, you're forgetting. You look just like me, but curly. You're just as ugly as I am, and you won't find love either.' Or smth like that. Just the casual insulting chaos that is siblings".
