hiya! for writers who are complete beginners, kinda sorta maybe write at a high school level, can't describe to save their lives, have overall bad flow (as in they can't decide what little moments scenes to think up and even write, if they do, they're no good), have been told countless times to write daily and just read more but that doesn't cover the basics or foundations of creative writing, not like they can learn from a book bc they're a hands on learner anyway and p.s they're super broke so can't afford writing classes and no library near them offers free ones ---- aka me :( --- do you have any advice? lol i feel kinda doomed and that maybe writing isn't for me, but I don't wanna get my hopes down!! with the right tools, it's possible.

Free Resources for Learning How to Write

I want to start with addressing why you've been told so often "to write daily and read more" as a way to learn how to write. It's very difficult to learn and excel at a craft if you have no experience with said craft. You can read all the information in the world about how to forge a sword, but that doesn't mean you'll be able to pick up a hunk of metal and be able to forge a beautiful sword. You need to spend a lot of time watching other people forge swords, and spend a lot of time actually practicing each step yourself if you want to get good at it. Writing works the same way. Reading lets you experience what fiction should be, writing lets you practice each step for yourself.

Fortunately, there are lots of ways to read fiction for free. You can borrow books from friends, family members, and members of your community. You can check out books and e-books from your local library if you have one. You can look for Little Free Libraries in your neighborhood. There's also a lot of legally free fiction available online. Project Gutenberg, Planet E-Book, Bartleby, Literature.org, Classic Literature, Classic Short Stories, Wattpad, Archive of Our Own, Library of Short Stories, Levar Burton Reads, and sites like Kobo, Amazon, and Audible often offer freebies of both e-books and audio books.

Other free ways to learn how to write:

1 - Follow bloggers and vloggers and authors on social media who talk about the craft of writing. Some of my favorites are: Joanna Penn/The Creative Penn, K.M. Weiland, Liselle Sambury, Abbie Emmons, Hannah Lee Kidder, Brittany Wang, Alyssa Matesic, Bethany Atazadah, Lindsay Puckett, Alexa Donne, Shaelin Writes, Ellen Brock, The Writing Gals, and Sincerely, Vee.

2 - Follow writing craft blogs here on tumblr: (some suggestions) @writingwithcolor, @howtofightwrite, @heywriters, @cripplecharacters, @lgbtqwriting, @fixyourwritinghabits, @wordsnstuff, @yourbookcouldbegayer, @lizard-is-writing

3 - Watch writing craft videos on YouTube: If there's something specific you want to learn about, say, "how to structure a scene," type it into YouTube and many different videos will pop up that walk you through how to structure a scene. Just look for one that strikes you as appealing!

4 - Look for free writing resources online: many authors (especially indie authors and writing gurus/coaches like Joanna Penn, K.M. Weiland, Bethany Atazadeh, Brittany Wang, and Abbie Emmons) offer free writing resources on their web sites or by signing up for their newsletters. Often you'll see writers participating in free online writing summits/workshops which you can sign up for and either watch the videos live or via video playback that is offered for a short period of time (like 24 hours.)

5 - Do a Google Search: believe it or not, there's not a single thing you could want to learn about writing that you can't find for free on Google. If you want to learn how to improve your grammar, go to Google, type in "tips for improving grammar" and you will get a million articles that will tell you how to do just that. Want to learn how to improve your story's flow? Google "how to improve story flow" and you'll have your answer. You can even search for free worksheets, guides, and workbooks on just about anything you want. "Free character development worksheet" brought back a ton of nice looking free worksheets. "Free worldbuilding workbook" brought up several free workbooks and worksheets to help you with worldbuilding. Everything you could want to know is out there.

And, bonus: you can always read through the posts in my WQA master list to get help with a wide variety of craft and writer-related issues.

I really wanna know, how are you so good with coming up with ideas?? How do you write so well/how did you get started on writing?? I really want to learn how to write well!

First off I love your username 🤣 and I’m glad you find my writing fun to read I try my best to make it as pleasing as possible.

So I come up with ideas by just everyday life thinking like hmmm how would the lads men react to this or hmmm I could make this a story. I have a very active imagination and I’m a maladaptive daydreamer so that’s probably a big part of it.

I gained traction pretty fast on here so the other half (damn near the majority) of all the prompts on my blog are from 🩵my lovely followers🩵 who send in requests. You guys keep expanding my imagination and I can’t thank you enough for that 🫶🏾

How did I get started writing? My mother was an English teacher up until I was about 8 years old so she introduced me to reading and writing heavy growing up. I was always reading above my actual grade level.

I wrote my first “story” when I was in 3rd grade and I’ve been writing ever since. I’m also an avid reader; I love falling into another world through books.

That feeling I get from reading is what I translate into my writing. My writing on here is more fun and goofy than actual literature. I do write Novellas in my free time but I will probably never show them to anyone because I heavily critique my writing so much ☠️

Learning to write well is a journey and you’re always learning. I'm still learning ways to improve my writing. If you’re looking to start writing stories here’s a few tips I can give you.

‼️DISCLAIMER I AM NOT A PROFESSIONAL‼️

These are just a few things I’ve learned. If you disagree that’s fine this is just what I’ve learned.

Avoid run on sentences

If you have a sentence that is getting a bit long find a stopping point and add a period. If you feel like it absolutely needs to be one sentence then break it up with a semicolon.

Break up your paragraphs

Long paragraphs with no breaks can make a reader gloss over your writing

Find your writing style

If you’re too busy trying to imitate the writing style of someone else you’ll find yourself stressed when trying to write your own work

Describe imagery

Tap into your readers imagination; describe what they’re looking at and what’s going on in great detail - build a world in your mind so you can help build one in their mind - if you have a hard time building the world in your own mind your reader will struggle as well.

Word vomit! Trust the process!

WRITE THOSE ROUGH DRAFTS - it doesn’t matter if it doesn’t make any sense just get those words onto the page you can edit and revise later every piece starts rough get those rough drafts written and go from there.

Avoid repetitive sentences, words, & over explaining

For example “I reached over the fence to grab the flower that was on the other side of the fence” You see how at the beginning of the sentence it’s already been established that whatever the character is reaching for is on the other side of the fence. That’s just a quick example.

Study grammar and use a dictionary

There are many ways to describe just about anything and you don’t have to stay inside a box of simple words to do it.

Lastly, it sounds corny, but have fun.

If you want to write you should enjoy it and it’s just words on a page that you can edit and revise.

Why a studyblr?

I opened this studyblr in order to stay productive and help others to do so too if I can. Also through this account I would like to share bits of my student life and motivate other students to do what a student should do like - study and enjoy life. I will post a lot about how to get motivation and how I study certain subjects and these posts will update as I go along!

Any competitive exams?

I am doing four exams ( sobs) which are for design and architecture respectively. These are NATA, JEE paper 2 ( this includes, maths, drawing and aptitude , not physics chemistry and maths ) , UCEED ( design) and NIFT ( design)

Future career?

I am hoping to study design or architecture and maybe get a literature or business degree as a side goal.

Any goals for 2025?

I wanna learn foreign languages such as Italian since it’s my current obsession. I’ve already learnt a bit of French so I’m planning on learning all of the Romance languages, so you will see me post about language learning too!!

I was born in England and I’ve lived in India and England on and off, every few years I’d shift to England and then come back to India. I did my boards (10th) in the uk in the form of GCSEs. GCSEs are usually done in 10th and 11th so I’m repeating a year again in India so it’s easier for me for my 12th boards!

Luna Jane Arabella Berry-Jones Flores, is my ramshackle sona and lover of Vinnie, She is a rich girl that has a mean and stuck up behavior at the start but slowly becomes sweeter, nurturing, nice and caringto more people, she's also very curious and since she decided to be different LOVES to learn new stuff, but please don't mess with her routine.

She starts off as mean and oblivious and naive as the others until one day she goes to one of the many ramshackle's next top sweetheart pageants as a guest for winning three times when she was a infant, and seeing a certain brunette scrap fight some lootbags, which somehow made her start to have "strange feelings" (she's gay and in love but she needs to listen to Chappell Roan to know that)

She then has more unexpected meetings with Vinnie that is basically Luna and Vinnie bickering, Vinnie pranking Luna in some way and Luna leaving confused, angry but also flustered at Vinnie's nature.

She then starts discovering herself and loses that obliviousness and wants to start getting to know scraps her and Vinnie slowly start becoming friends but always still with a tension.

The thing Luna still is oblivious with her feelings (GOOD LUCK BABE, YOU'LL HAVE TO STOP THE WORLD JUST TO STOP THE FEELING) and I think surely Vinnie thinks Luna is too good for her.

I didn't know how to make a intro for a blog so I took @small-world-au 's intro as a template (of course with their permission) so thankssssssss darling!

Luna after the occurrence with Vinnie she starts writing this tiny magazine, where she writes all the towns gossip, she obviously wouldn't be allowed to do this so she writes these tiny magazines with a alter ego called "Lady Amourville" and to not be discovered she also writes a bit of gossip about herself... At the start she writes only about the gossip between the rich folk but then as she becomes less and less ignorant she writes more and more about the scraps at a point where she writes about scraps equally if not more than the rich folk and it slowly becomes a testimony book and a way to show the rich folk that they're not so different from the scraps, that they all have they're dark sides, problems and love affairs and some metal and paper can't make them different from eachother. So it basically becomes a instrument to show her advancing as a character, and also that's it's heavily inspired in Lady Wistledown from "the Bridgertons".

(Maybe I'll start writing little chapters and things about her storyline in ramshackle and her romance with Vinnie, let me know if you'd guys like that and your completely allowed to make fan-things for the Ladytramp (Luna x Vinnie) ship and for my character, as long as you give me credit and also because I LOVE WHEN MUTUALS DRAW AND MAKE FAN-STUFF, FOR MY SELFSHIPS I'LL REBLOG YOU AND THANK YOU A MILLION TIMES LIKE A LITTLE GIRL RECEIVING A TRIP TO DISNEYLAND AND I'M SERIOUS!!!💕💕)

🤍 Hi, Hayzie !! I don’t know why it always gets me so excited whenever I hear from you on here, but anyways, this is such a great question, and I’m flattered by your curiosity :( Here goes my long as frick answer for ya, lovey ~

GROWING UP ⊹ I was homeschooled, and hanging around the house all day led to me picking up a lot of random hobbies, one of which being freelance creative writing. I wrote so many original songs, short stories, and even poems during that time, and I'd say this sort of upbringing is what helped foster the strong love for literature and art I hold in my heart today ⊹

DISCOVERING TUMBLR ⊹ So this is where the story gets interesting. Imagine a 17 year old me introducing my former Kpop-fan sister turned anti to the wonderful era of 4th gen Kpop. She fell in love with the culture all over again, which led to us doing this thing where we would role-play as certain Kpop idols through texts and gifs 🥴...

• So one night as I was looking for a Heeseung gif to send her, I stumbled upon one that looked really high quality, and it so happened to be posted by this page on Tumblr. Though st the time, I had never heard about that app/website before. When I clicked the gif, it took me to this link , and all I remember seeing was a bunch of ~freaky deaky~ warnings, but I scrolled past them (out of curiosity) before actually reading the words, and that’s when I realized "Oh, this is a story about Heeseung that a fan wrote…"

• To this day, I never forgot that story, but like, back then, I didn't even know what "smut" meant 😭 so when the story started describing a sexual scene between Heeseung and the MC, I was honestly a bit uncomfortable to the point that I couldn't even bring myself to finish reading it, yet at the same time, I was so intrigued.

• I ended up telling my sister about Tumblr (after she begged to know where I kept finding those high quality gifs), before she eventually fall into a DEEP hole of K-pop fanfic, which later compelled me to read more fics myself. Our favorite blog back then was @kpophubb, because of how diverse and well written her content was, but I also discovered other blogs like @starrywonie and @hee-pster who really inspired me to wanna start a blog for myself where I'd upload all of my original work, but I was still nervous about it... that is, until my sister told me about her blog, four months after she had already created it that sneaky bitch ⊹

INTRODUCING CHLORINECAKE ⊹ The very next day after my sister told me about her secret blog, I had this surge of motivation to start my own page! Using a short story I found buried in one of my forgotten writing apps, I edited it over night, and got my pictures and title together. I'll admit that I was very nervous at first, as I didn't know what to expect from the people who’d read it, especially considering how it was my first ever original written work to be put online. Fortunately though, I instantly fell in love with the engagement, the environment of Tumblr, and the new people I was meeting along the way... and yeah, that's pretty much how I got here today ⊹

Second Anniversary Special

As many of the long-time followers of this blog know, I originally started out on the classic literature side of tumblr, which is what lead to my venturing into bsd. As an homage to my roots as a classic lit enthusiast, I’ll be going through all the works that I’ve read written by bsd authors:

The Spider’s Thread by Akutagawa

This short story is brought up in a lot of animes, which is unfortunately the most likely way western bsd fans. I could make an entire separate post of commentary on how the American school system doesn’t cover most foreign literature (outside of English [as in from England] and French works), and that is an absolute travesty. However, that’s not what we’re covering right now. 

Anyway. The Spider’s Thread is a very short story—like two pages at most. You can go read it now. For all the other entries I plan on rating the novels out of 5, but this one’s truly too short to rate. If you wanna read it you can find a hundred pdfs online. The same probably goes for most works of classic literature, so. Go wild enjoy the wonderful world of free online pdfs.

The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe

I was probably assigned other works by Poe, but this one is most likely his most famous short story. I was assigned it in middle school/high school/ and at least twice in college. Again, very short short story—you can read it in a few minutes tops. 

5/5 for the sole reason of it aligning with my personal sense of humor. I get that it’s not supposed to be funny, but unreliable narrators are and will always be hilarious to me. I love a guy insisting that he’s not crazy while he’s off murdering a guy. Cask of Amontillado-core protagonist. Funny because E.A. Poe also wrote Cask of Amantillado. I’m out here starting to suspect that E.A. Poe just really loved writing his unnamed unreliable narrator protagonists.

Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain

I’ve never read Tom Sawyer, but in 11th grade my class read Huckleberry Finn. 3/5 because I don’t like the way it was taught in class, but I did enjoy analyzing it more than some other books we did. 

Crime and Punishment by Dostoyevsky

Currently reading it so I can’t give much feedback, but so far I’d like this guy (Raskolnikov not Dostoyevsky) to meet Meursault from The Stranger. If anyone’s made this crossover, please send it to me. And if not and you wanna go make it yourself—please I’ll love you forever.

Dracula by Bram Stoker 

I mean we’ve all done Dracula Daily. Or at least I’ll assume you’ve heard of it. 5/5, Mina’s best girl, Quincey’s best boy, I have very basic opinions but I’m standing by them.

Meursault the prison is clearly named after Meursault, the fictional character who famously goes to prison, right. We’re all on the same page about this, right? 

Anyway if you’ve never heard of or read the stranger, [spoilers] it’s about this guy who kills a guy for no reason (“it was just so hot outside, idk what happened but now there’s a dead guy, this is a good enough criminal defense right? You’re not gonna send me to jail for just this one little mistake---oh you’re giving me the death penalty? Ah. I see.”) Solid 4/5—points deducted for being a little slow by some parts (although I can’t vouch for how it is in the original French, this was only my impression from the English translation I read)

After making this list, it’s clear that I haven’t read too many books my bsd authors, so next years my anniversary special will be more about the classic literature I have read. I do plan to keep posting until then. So please enjoy another year of the anti-dazai blog!!

any tips for where someone might wanna research to kick off an interest in medieval literature? there's a LOT out there and i've not had much luck with only university reading lists as a start point.

hmm are you looking for books about medieval literature or are you looking for medieval texts to read

because if you are looking for medieval texts to read, i highly recommend táin bó cúailnge lmao (i just think it's neat! also i read it with basically zero contextual knowledge as an 18-year-old weirdo and had a good time). if you search for the tag "reading list" on my blog (i think that's the one i use!) you'll find previous posts with recs of medieval texts and where to find them, including a "so you've read the táin, now what" post that might be helpful if you take that first rec. it's all very irish bc that's what i do. other people have lists for other languages

if you are looking for info about medieval lit though i would say possibly a good place to start is podcast/videos if you are that kind of learner? i am not, so i can't offer many recommendations, and there's definitely a lot of bullshit about there, but. sometimes the bullshit is fertiliser. like you hear something you think is interesting so then you look it up and find out what it's actually about, yunno? there are also real academics and other clued-up people talking about medieval lit though. you could try the celtic students podcast for some tasters of what research people are doing in the field these days. for irish lit @finnlongman has some videos with retellings and further reading in the descriptions (sorry, i don't know a lot of non-irish/celtic-specific resources haha)

like i absolutely got into medieval literature in... not the WORST way bc it wasn't actively racist except that a lot of my sources were from the 19th century, but it definitely wasn't a GOOD way either. i read a LOT of bullshit, from heavily sanitised retellings and terrible 80s fantasy novels to romanticist popular history, so i had to unlearn a lot of stuff once i started doing it properly haha. so all my "introductory" sources were bad and i would not recommend them. but also it did work for me. which is the problem bc it means i don't have a lot of recs for stuff when you're first starting out and haven't already figured out what bullshit you're trying to get to the bottom of 😂

but yeah check out the "reading list" tag for other recs i've shared in the past and also other people's recs that i've reblogged! there might be some useful stuff in there idk!

I’m gonna vent here because this is my blog and no one can stop me. I just went to dinner with my dad for my birthday. I just turned 19, I’ve barely been outta high school for 3 months, I’m not going to college until January because I wanna work first to save money and help my mother with bills. My dad and his wife sit there and ask me questions they know make me uncomfortable and that they know will make me upset. His wife asks me if I’m dating anyone as they’re talking about who my sister is going to homecoming with, and I say I’m not dating right now because frankly my last relationship destroyed me and I just wanna focus on me for a little while, but then his wife says I should do online dating and just have fun. She asks how my friends are enjoying college and asks if I wish I was there with them. I wish I was, but I have to focus on other things and sacrifice going to college right now so that I can ya know live. They tell me I should be going to parties, and drinking, and dating, and that I’m only 19 and that I’ll have plenty of time to be boring and no fun when I’m older. I don’t think I’m no fun, but my definition of fun is way different from there’s. My idea of fun is playing dnd, and playing board games, and playing video games, and reading books, and doing nerd shit. I don’t want to go get drunk with strangers at a frat house. I wanna be a nerd with other nerds because I think it’s fun. I don’t understand why they can’t just accept that I’m not extroverted and social like that. They also always give me shit for how I dress. I like sweaters, I like jeans, I like my comfy old boots. I like being comfy. I remember wearing a top with cleavage one day this summer and my step mother making a big deal out of it because she kept saying that she thought I was a prude. I don’t have a problem wearing clothes like that, but it just made me uncomfortable. I just wanna exist. I just want to be comfortable and a dork and not be given shit for it.

They also give me a hard time because I didn’t go to the same high school as his wife’s 2 boys and my sister. I went to a charter school and graduated from there because when I was little my parents noticed that I was bored in public school, so they wanted to find something to challenge me and it worked. I loved my school. I loved getting to take Latin, and Roman history, and advanced literature and history classes. I loved my art class, I loved the small class sizes, and I loved knowing everyone I went to school with. They give me a hard time because they said I didn’t have a real high school experience. I wouldn’t have enjoyed going to a regular public high school. I would’ve fucking hated it. They say I never got to have a real homecoming or a real prom, and that I never got to go to football games. I don’t care about football, and I did have a real prom and a real hoco and I loved going to them. They were fun, and I liked that we were a smaller school because it meant we could do more cool things than the bigger schools could. I just don’t understand why they’re so hell bent on trying to get me to be someone I’m not.

@hellgiven - Charli is just so talented I can't. She had such a knack with taking canon muses from one fandom and moving them to new fandoms and making it fele as is they had always been there. I honestly need to remind myself at times that Caroline and Davina originated in different fandoms because Charli puts so much love and lore into any muse she writes and I adore Charli.

Someone followed my sprite blog who rbed a "DON'T DONATE TO AO3!!!!!1!!1!!1!!!!" Post that essentially boiled down to "They have too much money already!!! They have enough saved to run the website for 5 years without further donations!!!"

And I'm like..... "And????"

5 Years ain't that long of a time, hon. I know younger people think it is but damn have the years been racing by for me as I've gotten older.

Also, I'd rather Ao3 keep that surplus on hand and not have to dip into it unless for a financial emergency. Like if they start using their surplus now and then two years from now they get into financial hell for whatever reason, and all of that surplus saved up is gone, then Ao3 will be gone too.

Here's the thing--I get that people want to be like "DON'T DONATE TO AO3 DONATE TO X IMPORTANT CAUSE INSTEAD" and if you don't they tell you to off yourselves, and it's like. People with expendable money can and will donate to more than one thing. You do know that, right? You can donate to both. I know the argument is "YOU SHOULD PUT ALL OF YOUR MONEY IN THE BETTER CAUSE" but that kind of mentality leaves other important fundraising projects in the dust.

The preservation of fandom and fanfiction is an important cause, because preserving primarily queer literature is an important cause. It's not just because "Ooooh my favorite fanfics!!!!!1!!111!!", and it never has been. Fandom is primarily queer, and queer spaces are always in constant danger of being shut down at the smallest hint of a law break.

Which, on to the post's second point: Ao3 is not investing their surplus enough for a stable financial future.

I argue: Laws. Laws specifically for non-profit organizations and how much money they can get from investments before they go from "non-profit" to "profit."

I can't find any easy-to-read US law on the subject, but considering that Ao3 is a predominant queer space with lots of queer media that everyone with an internet has access to, that excessive scrutiny over OTW will be brutal if OTW isn't careful. Again, I am not sure how much money they can invest and make in investments, but due to the nature of the website and how queerphobic the US government has become/has always been, I wouldn't be surprised if the reason why investments aren't a viable option to OTW was simply because of how quickly things can go downhill if they start making too much money. Because I hope you people realize the moment Ao3 is deemed as a "for-profit" organization by homophobic governors who are clutching their pearls and chanting "think of the children!" at the horny gay furry porn on Ao3, that it will get utterly destroyed by copyright law and shut down within a year, at the longest.

So yeah. Idk, donate to whatever the fuck you want tbh? If you wanna donate to a fundraiser that is aiming to protect queer literature written for free by fans in fandom, then by all means, donate. It's not the soulless cause you think it is.
