The Silco Saga, a restrospective after Arcane Season 2
Part One: Silco, Jinx and Canon VS Fanon
After rewatching the entirety of Arcane, Iâve been reflecting on some recurring points of contention in the fandom with the show's second and final season, particularly from the pro-Silco side. A common sentiment Iâve seen is that Season 2 diminishes the significance of Silco and Jinxâs relationship by excluding him from the narrative. This criticism often hinges on the idea that their father-daughter bond was central to Season 1, and sidelining it in favor of Jinxâs connection to Vanderâwhich was only hinted at in the first seasonâcheapens their relationship and his role in the story. Initially, I sympathized with this take, especially as Silco was (and still is) my favorite character in Arcane. His limited presence in Season 2 felt disappointing, and the season overall didnât seem as cohesive as the first. But after rewatching the show, my perspective has shifted. I think the fandom, especially Silco fans, might have viewed their relationship through fanon-colored glasses, forgetting how ambiguously it was written in the canon, and therefore have a skewed perspective on the reason for his âdiminishedâ role in season 2.
Canon vs. Fanon: Silco and Jinxâs Relationship
In the show, Jinx is referred to as Silcoâs daughter by only three characters: Sevika, Singed, and Silco himself. Sevika uses the term twiceâonce as a jab to Vi, and once to Silco directly, comparing his bond with Jinx to her own relationship with her father. Singed uses the term during a critical scene where he prepares to "revive" Jinx. Silco calls her his daughter twice as well: once while speaking to Vanderâs statue and again during the climactic dinner confrontation. Notably, all of these acknowledgments occur within Silcoâs inner circle. Characters outside this circle describe their relationship differentlyâEkko says Jinx âbelongs toâ Silco, and Finn crudely refers to her as his âdog.â This suggests their father-daughter bond was deeply private, recognized only by those closest to them. Even for Silco himself, the acknowledgment of Jinx as his daughter is not immediate. He only explicitly calls her that in moments of extreme emotional vulnerabilityâafter being faced by Jayceâs ultimatum and again during the final confrontation, when heâs forced to bid for her affection against Vi. This delay suggests Silco might not have fully understood or articulated their bond until those moments. His closed-off nature and trauma from Vanderâs betrayal likely made it difficult for him to consciously embrace or display genuine paternal affection. While Silco has moments of vulnerability with Jinx, he often reframes them to maintain control or serve a larger purpose, consistent with his characterization as a man who repressed empathy to achieve his goals.
Jinxâs Perspective: Complicated Feelings
Silcoâs presence in Season 2 hinges on how Jinx feels about him. As he is dead and was not widely beloved in Zaun, there is little reason for other characters to dwell on him. Jinx, however, is deeply affected by his absence, yet, when looking back on Season 1, it is clear that their relationship was far from simple. She's not just a girl mourning her dad, and the show addresses this point very precisely, albeit subtly. So subtly, in fact, that I feel like a lot of people are missing it.
What does Jinx feel about Silco, then? I feel like in order to answer this question, we first have to understand Jinx as a character. Her defining traits are her insecurity in attachments and her avoidance of difficult emotionsâtraits stemming from her traumatic childhood. Even during Season 1, she frequently doubts her place with Silco, as shown by her desperate attempts to prove herself. Her kidnapping of Silco in Episode 9âprompted by her fear that he might betray herâunderscores her deep-seated anxiety.
By the end of Season 1, Jinxâs doubts regarding the sincerity of his affection are dispelled when Silcoâs final words affirm his love for her. However, their relationshipâs tragic endâaccidentally killing him after finally realizing his affectionâleaves an indelible mark on her psyche. Her guilt over his death compounds her existing trauma, making it difficult for her to process her feelings about him. The father-daughter bond that some in the fandom want so badly to be acknowledged can't be explored in its purest essence, because it barely had time to exist before it was irrevocably marred by another layer of trauma.
Furthermore, thereâs the unspoken reality that Silco played a role in the events that led to her familyâs death. While Jinx primarily blames herself, she is likely aware on some level of Silcoâs involvement. This complex mix of love, guilt, and unresolved feelings creates a psychological minefield that she is unlikely to navigate openly, and thus Silco's role in Season 2 is diminished.
Silcoâs Rebirth Narrative: A Misguided Legacy
Silcoâs trauma from Vanderâs betrayal led him to create a narrative of personal rebirthâa psychological coping mechanism that allowed him to suppress his pain and embrace a ruthless new identity. He tries to pass this philosophy on to Jinx, encouraging her to adopt a dual-identity framework to overcome her own trauma. However, this mindset is ultimately a form of avoidance, preventing true healing. Silcoâs dichotomy of "before" and "after" ignores the reality that trauma does not erase or replace oneâs identity; acceptance and integration are the only paths to recovery.
Season 2 subtly critiques Silcoâs influence on Jinx. In her funeral monologue in the Pilt, she still employs the avoidance tactics taught to her by Silco, externalizing her pain, blaming an unnamed "someone" for her suffering (âsomeone put all those holes in youâ). However, following two very brief appearances as a hallucination, Silco is conspicuously absent from the first two arcs. Early in the season, she seeks his guidance but receives noneâa sign that, perhaps, she is subconsciously realizing that his lessons no longer serve her (and, perhaps, never have). Instead, she finds solace in other connections, which were denied to her while Silco was still alive. The all-encompassing codependence they developed towards each other allowed for no outside influence.
I find it particularly poignant that the character she offers her the most genuine solace in Season 2, Isha, is mute. Jinxâs doesnât need someone, to rearrange her feelings into a well crafted narrative like Silco would have done. She needs the innocent enthusiasm of a child who believes in her no matter what, to finally start believing that sheâs still worth something, that she can do something right. She needs to feel, to grieve, to accept the totality of what happened to her and what she is, because itâs the only way to overcome the tragedy of her life and move towards healing.
The Genius of Silcoâs Season 2 Scene
Silcoâs brief appearance in Jinxâs hallucination in the final arc Season 2 is, to me, a masterstroke of storytelling. In her subconscious, he delivers a message about breaking the cycle of self-perpetrating violence, guilt and shame that has trapped them both. This speech is uncharacteristic of the Silco we knew in Season 1, but thatâs the pointâitâs not really him. Itâs Jinxâs way of processing her trauma and finding a path forward. By conjuring Silco to voice this revelation, she symbolically redeems both of them. Itâs a poignant moment of closure and growth, showing how far she has come in her journey toward healing. Itâs her looking at Silco and going: âLook dad, I fixed it. I fixed it for the both of us.â
Conclusion
Far from cheapening their bond, I think Season 2 offers a very nuanced yet subtle exploration of Silco and Jinxâs relationship. It acknowledges their mutual affection while addressing the darker, unhealthy aspects of their dynamic. Silcoâs absence forces Jinx to confront her past and begin to heal, ultimately allowing her to honor his memory in a way that reflects her growth. This portrayal adds depth and complexity to their story, proving that even in death, Silco remains an integral part of Jinxâs journey.

Read a comment bashing lwj...
This is a very long rant about why I love lan wangji's character and why I think his behavior towards Wei Wuxian pre-sunshot campaign make sense. Some events I talk about might be out of order, because I'm rambling. Spoilers for scenes from Audio drama, cdrama, and the other mdzs canons.
So I accidentally read a comment bashing lwj and it made me so mad. Mostly because I found it incredibly inaccurate in interpreting his actions and his relationship with WWX. I can understand not liking LWJ just because his personality isn't one everyone would click with, but hating on him for inaccurate assessment of his character?! It feels like an injustice. So I'm going to share why his character is so fascinating to me, and why his actions make sense.
LWJ is one of my favorite characters for a reason, and there's a reason WWX likes this guy. Was LWJ's behavior as a teen towards wwx dumb? Yes. He was a teenager, lashing out because he had all these feelings and he was scared of being like his parents and scared of the idea that the things he'd been taught about the world was wrong, and he was angry because he couldn't control anything or make it align with that worldview, and he was so full of attraction and fascination and desire that frightened him, because the world and his clan had taught him it was wrong. And it was all happening because of this beautiful, bright boy, who wouldn't obey any of the rules LWJ had been taught made someone "good", but who was somehow so good anyway (which he learns from the Waterborne Abyss incident, when WWX rescues Su She). LWJ has been thrown into a hormonal, existential chaos.
He's never learned to communicate because he's never had a single friend in his life, and he hadn't had anyone to teach him all the ways love could be good, could be healthy, could be a blessing. Only that it was a sin, and that he was bad to have those feelings. He hadn't had anyone to teach him how to manage his emotions in a healthy way, or how to trust his own sense of right and wrong even over what others told him.
And here's this boy, who laughs at, disregards, disrespects LWJ's home and the wisdom he's been taught to look up to all his life. His clan's history and methods. And he's so beautiful, but it feels like this boy is laughing at him. And this boy is so charming, and every time he flirts or is friendly he must be making fun of LWJ because no one has ever teased him like this, or treated him in such a friendly way. Of course WWX doesn't actually want to be friends, or isn't really flirting. He has so many other friends, why would he want to be friends with LWJ? He just wants to get out of punishment, or be entertained. And he likes girls, so of course his flirting with LWJ is only to make fun.
And LWJ feels so vulnerable when WWX flirts, because he wants WWX to look at him and call him handsome, and maybe he's scared WWX sees that. So of course he's going to ignore him, avoid him. Of course he's going to respond with "Shameless!" and "Boring!" He thinks WWX is making fun of him. He thinks WWX is going to hurt him, if LWJ softens. And these emotions are so strong. What if they grow out of control, to the point his love becomes something that poisons, stifles, or hurts? That's a recipe for textbook anxious avoidant attachment style right there (I would know lol i am also this way).
And No wonder he reacted so strongly to the spring book prank. I think bro felt terrified/furious WWX had perceived, in some way, his own desires. And thought WWX was making fun of him. To me, this hits a lot more strongly in the cdrama, especially as the spring book cdrama!WWX used was of the cut-sleeve variety.
And when WWX knocks him over the wall, so sure LWJ will reveal that he's just like the rest of GusuLan, who just want to have rules to feel morally superior over others, enforcing them selectively but not applying them if it suits them (see: LQR) LWJ is determined to prove him wrong, and takes punishment along WWX for being outside the walls after curfew. And here's where WWX's (more negative) opinion of LWJ's character begins to change. He sees that LWJ is genuine in his desire to do good, to be morally righteous. And that makes LWJ stand out against so much of the rest of the cultivation world.
But LWJ still thinks WWX is teasing him maliciously, even when WWX announces that his opinion of LWJ has changed and he wants to be friends. LWJ is still heavily on guard, and again, WWX is approaching him when LWJ feels very vulnerable, given he's undressed in the cold spring, and WWX is also getting undressed in the cold spring. And then WWX says he'll introduce LWJ to girls. Again: he's vulnerable, feeling wrong, feeling made fun of, so he pulls away.
I don't think LWJ really starts to let down his guard until after WWX brings him the rabbits as a gift. Because WWX brought them, and even if he felt vulnerable and teased during that exchange, they were still a gift, proof that WWX had thought of him outside of just their exchanges during WWX's punishment. It is a much kinder feeling of being perceived than the spring book was.
And then WWX is kicked out of lectures, and LWJ doesn't see him again until indoctrination, but even though he was hoping-not-hoping with WWX gone the feelings would fade, instead he writes a love song because he can't get WWX out of his head. All his pulling away and guarding himself seems to be for naught. In the audio drama (the lotus seed pod extra) he even goes to a lotus pond to pick the seed pods with the stems attached because he missed WWX and was thinking about the things he'd shared about his home. He wanted to know about the things WWX liked, the things WWX experienced in his home, even if he wasn't brave enough to go to Lotus Pier directly. [EDIT: It was pointed out that this extra appeared first in the novel.]
And then there's the Discussion Conference, where WWX pulls off LWJ's forehead ribbon. I imagine this event caused LWJ to feel humiliated, ashamed, angry, (and even more horrifyingly to LWJ, pleased on some level that it was WWX) and exposed in front of the entire cultivation society. It might not "seem like a big deal" to a lot of fans because to us it's just a strip of fabric no matter how symbolic, but in this case it is very important that we imagine the gravity of this to understand where LWJ is coming from. For better understanding I would compare it to a lot of modern spiritual practices that use clothing in similar symbolic ways, and we would never want to disrespect someone by disrespecting that clothing, even if it is not a practice we personally follow. And WWX pulling the ribbon off in front of pretty much everyone (many of whom went to lectures at Cloud Recesses), including LWJ's own clan, who understand perfectly what it meant that WWX did that? Mortifying. And then his own clan reassures him that "it doesn't count" because WWX is a man, which must have been really invalidating to LWJ in its own way. So any progress on the friendship front/ideas of softening his guard on LWJ's part is gone. Toast.
And then his home has been burnt to the ground, his brother in hiding, and his leg broken. It's no surprise he's going to spurn WWX at indoctrination. He's grieving, stressed out more than he's ever been, in so much pain. LWJ probably feels really overwhelmed, overstimulated, and unsafe. He just cannot deal with All the Emotions About Wei Wuxian on top of that, and how would he even begin to tell WWX what had happened? He'd prefer to just avoid, avoid, avoid. (In the cdrama, I think he's also trying to distance himself so WWX won't draw the attention of WC.) And when WWX flirts with Mianmian, LWJ has had it up to here. He has no idea WWX is just trying to get medicine for him. And when WWX wants to carry him, the last thing LWJ probably wants is to be vulnerable with wwx in this very unsafe situation, where the Wens are constantly looking for weakness. So he brushes him off.
Then in the cave, LWJ is one of the first (along with JZX to resist the Wens and protect Mianmian. And then he stays behind with WWX and pushes him out of the way of the Xuanwu to get bitten instead. That speaks volumes about his character.
And then there's the whole debacle where LWJ is furious about the branding scar. I know he's of course jealous about the whole Mianmian thing, and WWX trying to lighten the mood/distract LWJ the way he distracts the Jiang siblings by going on about being a dashing hero protecting a maiden, but that just pisses LWJ off more, and I believe it's because LWJ is mad that WWX is treating the matter so lightly, because to him, love and devotion and self-sacrifically pushing people out of the way of danger is so powerful it feels like he's drowning, and WWX is over here like "haha she'll always remember me isn't that nice" and "it doesn't matter that i got hurt because it would have hurt her worse bc of beauty/reputation/the consequences of a woman losing her beauty" (which, kudos to WWX for understanding the ways women are affected by patriarchy, and beauty as a form of power/a tool for a future)
But LWJ is over here, viciously reminded he's not special and WWX would help and flirt with anyone and (seemingly) not think twice about it. Another thought process he could be having could be: but you got hurt. and that is unacceptable, and I hate that you're trying to say it like it is acceptable, bc it's like you don't care, and I care so much it feels like it could kill me. (I'm extrapolating a bit about this thought process here, but it seems plausible enough to me)
And then there's the whole thing where earlier WWX had made LWJ gay-panic hard enough to spit up blood, and then promptly reassured him he doesn't like guys. LWJ didn't need this on top of all the stress, and WWX just took off his headband to make a splint again, and so its presence isn't there to press him into restraint, and now the Mianmian thing, all the stress and adrenaline just come crashing down and bro just can't take it anymore and bites WWX bc maybe he he's mad that WWX has made the impact of a meteor strike in his life and it seems like WWX doesn't take more than a passing thought to those he impacts so deeply. So in all his deep and torrential emotions, bro is just like "I'll make you remember, even just a little bit, the way I remember you." I think in any other circumstance, LWJ wouldn't have lashed out in this way. It took so much for him to reach this point. Should he have bitten WWX? No. Do I understand why he did? Yeah.
And then LWJ tells WWX about Cloud Recesses and cries, for obvious reasons.
And so to call his behavior "abuse" towards WWX at any point in this timeline makes literally no sense at all (though unfortunately that was what the comment called it), and it tore me up to think about it. This is a very long post, and I have a lot to say about LWJ's actions during and post sunshot, but I'm tired so I'll just leave this here. Feel free to share your insights and what you love about LWJ's character. Also, if you have fic recs for favorite LWJ characterizations, please share! I'd love to read them.
TL;DR - Lwj's behavior and treatment of WWX pre-sunshot makes sense in context of his pov. He's flawed, but that's what makes him such a great character, and I love him for good reason.

About Soukoku and the Perception Issues of Their Relationship
The difficulty in perceiving their relationship arose quite suddenly and in a rather strange way. This is ironic because the dynamic of their relationship fits the societal archetype of something sacred and quite intimate: you can joke, hit, tease, and push someone to their limit, but both parties understand that the other is not truly against it. You wouldnât act this way with just anyone. But if something genuinely bothers either of you, you either feel it instinctively or discuss it directly, because you matter to each other.
This is exactly the nature of Soukoku. But at some point, people began to view their relationship through a much more uncomfortable lens, distorting the original canon. Chuuya behaves with Dazai in a way that is entirely unique, but this is not a flaw â on the contrary, it is that âspecialâ way of perceiving a person that is rarely seen with anyone else.
Soukoku spent several years side by side. They understand that if something the other did truly hurt them, it wouldnât have happened in the first place. They are mature, civilized people capable of dialogue and, when necessary, taking each other seriously. Society itself was the one to equate this with intimacy and, after that, became angry at its own interpretation.
I dare say that their relationship is almost healthy â at least, considering the moral norms of their world, which is distorted and distinct from ours due to the existence of ability users. Both of them enjoy their quarrels and teasing. Dazai actively seeks to get under Chuuyaâs skin, and Chuuya cares about him despite it.
If the problem lies in how much they mean to each other, then there is no room for argument. Both Oda Sakunosuke and the Flags were of different importance to Dazai and Chuuya, respectively. But for Chuuya, Dazai is just as important as the Flags. For Dazai, Chuuya was just as important as Sakunosuke. However, human psychology and grief for the deceased remain unchanged regardless of logic.
I wonât bring up Storm Bringer as an example since they were younger there, and many moments are too controversial.
But I will reference BEAST, where Dazai âkills two birds with one stone.â In BEAST, memories intertwine with the original and with other universes. Here, Dazai aims not only to preserve Odaâs life in this world but also to free Chuuya from regret because he knew what kind of person Chuuya was. Dazai intentionally tried to make Chuuya hate him â to make him wish to kill him with his own hands. But Chuuya isnât that kind of person. Even after Dazaiâs death, he was torn between two opposing feelings: hatred for not having been the one to kill him (though he had every right to, considering all he had endured) and grief because he still had an emotional attachment to Dazai. Chuuya is someone who bonds with others emotionally, and that attachment to Dazai never fully disappeared.
In the original universe, Dazai actively seeks to maintain their connection, unlike BEAST, where he pushes Chuuya away. Yet in both universes â the original and BEAST â Chuuya walks the path of literal self-destruction. (Itâs worth remembering that Chuuya is always extremely cautious about using Corruption and tries to avoid it by any means possible.)
In Dead Apple, he activates Corruption to save the city. The problem is that, if Dazai had not been alive, Chuuya would have wiped out the entire world by himself, only to die from the effects of Corruption. But Chuuya believed Dazai had already considered this part of the plan and trusted that he would be saved.
In BEAST, however, driven by rage and emotion, Chuuya activates Corruption to destroy the Agency and, seemingly, everything around him. He knew it would kill him. Dazai even says this aloud in the film. And Chuuya still went through with it. He consciously chose that death, those sacrifices.
The status Dazai held in BEAST, as well as the accumulated trauma from past losses of loved ones, affected Chuuya so profoundly that he became paranoid when it came to Dazai. He evaluated every possible outcome, every possible threat, and constantly criticized Dazai for his recklessness.
Soukoku has a brilliant dynamic. We just need more time to fully appreciate it.

Thinking about Jason reading AFTG rn, who would you say is his favourite character? Is there an evolution between kid Jason, Jaybin, pre-flashpoint Red Hood, Rebirth Red Hood? Just mashing the fandoms together in a blender, purĂŠeing them together if you will
mhm, good soup (purĂŠed fandoms).
my interpretation of jason at any stage in his life relies so heavily on personal hcs and cherry-picking canon that these may be the most atrocious takes youâve ever heard. but here we go!
kid jason: i think heâd feel the most connected to aaron. everyoneâs telling you youâll never make anything of yourself? that your life was doomed before it began? well, youâre not gonna accept that, are you? youâre gonna find a way to prove all of them wrong. youâre not gonna let anyone kill your dreams just because theyâre âunrealisticâ for someone âlike you.â jason and aaron also both have a very strong dedication to their mother, who struggled with a drug addiction. while i donât believe jasonâs mom was ever abusive, i think jason would feel somewhat vindicated by seeing a representation of someone who still loved their mom despite what her illness drove her to do/made her into.
jaybin: neil. a man with a reputation for taking in strays gives you the offer of a lifetime? you get the chance to leave your past behind, even for a little while, and have something good that gives you joy and fulfillment at a level you never thought youâd get to experience? youâre familiar enough with the cruel way the world works to know that happiness wonât last forever, that itâll have an expiration date, but you want to make the most of it while you still can? yeah, jaybin would definitely see himself in neil. heâd also get a kick out of neilâs attitude problem and continued state of being a pr nightmare.
(outing myself as a fake fan when i admit that iâm not very familiar with the difference between pre-flashpoint and rebirth red hood, so just know that my âred hoodâ is a mash-up of random fragments of comic canon and utrh)
red hood: this oneâs a little more complicated. i think andrewâs system of making deals to feel like he has any worth to others would really resonate with jason. but given the torture the joker put him through, jason would probably have a ton of respect for neil post-baltimore, too. heâd also probably be a bit jealous of neil getting welcomed back with open arms and getting to stay âneil jostenâ even after nathaniel wesninski came to light. in contrast, jason couldnât really stay âjason toddâ legally or in the eyes of the people who once cared about him after he was revealed to be red hood. he was⌠someone else, as far as everyone else was concerned. so jasonâs favorite would probably be either andrew or neil with some complicated emotions attached to the latter.
bonus: i hc as jason being raised catholic and having a super complicated relationship with christianity because of that, soâlike neilâhe probably wouldnât be reneeâs biggest fan. maybe a part of him feels like the subliminal messaging of her character is that if he had âenough faith,â he couldâve come back from the dead/his ultimate low point as a comparatively âbetter personâ instead of a more violent one. which. no question why jason wouldnât appreciate that sentiment too much. still, i think heâd find himself surprisingly touched by renee giving her knives to andrew and sparring with him.
this is really long whoops

How could you. HOW COULD YOU! You know EXACTLY how much time he spent Crafting himself to become the person he can at least begin to tolerate, begin to identify as himself, to proudly label as ISABEAU! You broke it, your his face, that stupid face that makes you so so SO CRABBING FURIOUS! SO VIOLENT! SO! UNRELENTINGLY! JEALOUS! And now you've Changed him, with your rage, with your anger; like the Universe Changed you. For the worse. Your bleeding Pincushion. You dig your fist into his nose. Blood on your hands.
*grinding my teeth* God god god I have become obsessed with Quin (to quote it, "I'm a mannequin without the man[ne]") and how on a scale of love to hate in the loopified party, Quin and Isabeau are worse together than Siffrin and Loop :P

also his drawings. make me insane. im pretty sure ive made a post about this before a while ago but i just love looking at his silly little drawings it adds so much to his character. even after everything he's been through he's still got some humor and lightheartedness in him. and he's really good at drawing too!! so it's likely something he's been doing since he was a kid
#will always believe in closeted art kid michael who became a bully so he wouldnt get bullied himself <- REAL TO ME!#anyways all his drawings are fun but i still cant get over the little hearts he scribbled in the margins of that one page#theyre just so simple and....... human. i dont know ToT#this guy is literally an undead purple zombie and he's doodling little hearts in a book#it just reminds you that michael IS a Real Guy. like canon fnaf kind of sucks ass when it comes to actually attaching any people or real#human emotion to the events of the games (very much focuses more on What Happened over actual character stuff)#(which is fine but not what i rlly look for in media usually lol.... which is why i love stuff like og fnaf vhs#which is much more character-driven)#but anyways. i think his comments and drawings in the logbook work wonders in making michael feel more real#and less like just unseen protagonist who we know about vaguely#thats why i cling so hard onto little things like his habit of chewing gum. or just him liking to draw in general#usually i dont like when fandoms make One Trait of a character super prominent/their whole personality#but with michael we know SO UNFATHOMABLY LITTLE about his character/personality that these little scraps of info are rlly all we have#in terms of his character beyond The Things That Happened To/Around Him#OH also. his love of that stupid fucking vampire show is SOOOO near and dear to my heart#another thing that makes him so painfully human. yes he is serious protagonist guy who goes thru the most unimaginable shit ever#but at the end of the day. he like many of us enjoys a stupid cartoon that he probably takes way too seriously for what it actually is#his comment about it in the logbook still makes me laugh THIS MF IS PROJECTING ONTO A FICTIONAL CHARACTER IN HIS LITTLE SHOW#HE JUST LIKE ME FR#ANYWAYS holy fucking shit i did NOT mean to go on this long of a rant#i just fucking love michael afton so much im sorry#serena.txt

yâknow how some people have service dogs? fitz deserves a service dragon. if alvar gets to have a pet raptor then fitz should get to have a dragon to help with his echoes. (bonus points if he names them after mr. snuggles)
#i want him to open a bakery and there's this smol lil dragon tailing him everywhere#even if this dragon's service is purely emotional support he deserves it#fitz vacker#kotlc#keeper of the lost cities#the fact that fitz is canonically disabled is so fucking special to me ok#i adore him#he is my little guy#i'm picturing a small dragon for convenience that could be a lap dragon but also. huge horse sized dragons (since that's as big as they get#in canon) can be lap dragons too. fitz could literally ride on top of his dragon if he's tired. flappy lil guy could handle it#would probably like flying around too#we have sokeefe w/ alicorns and then we have fitz w/ his horse sized dragon and they fly around together#the image makes me v happy ok#what would probably be funniest would be if fitz THOUGHT he was getting a tiny dragon because the baby dragon he picked out was small#and then it just keeps growing and he realizes he accidentally picked out one of the bigger ones#bonus points if the dragon still thinks it's lap dragon material. fitz sits down to eat lunch on a picnic or smth#and this huge ass dragon lays across him and expects scritches and fitz is like. snuggles jr (or whatever he names them). my arms may be#long but not THAT long. i am losing circulation in my legs. you're an excellent table for my lunch but also. i can't feel anything below my#waist#oh my god i am so attached to this dragon that doesn't even exist. silliest little guy ever to accompany our resident skeptic

I could make a serious Wicked review and talk about the vocals and the choreography and the costumes and the sets, which are all great, but this is tumblr, and I know that all of these aspects will not matter nearly as much as me reviewing the movie by how much gay subtext they put into it, so that's exactly what I'm gonna do.
Elphaba and Glinda are either holding hands or have their arms linked for about 70% of this movie. Literally, after they officially become friends these girls are attached at the hip.
'What Is This Feeling?' remains about as gay as it usually is, but I will highlight that they lie awake at night thinking about each other which. I know what you are etc etc
The scene where they dance together is. I have no words. That was beautiful. Both actresses put so much emotion into the sequence. And there's a moment where Glinda puts her hand on Elphaba's face, almost like she's brushing away the tears there, and that shit made me cry as well.
'Popular' is insanely homosexual. There's a scene where they're laying down on the bed looking into each other's eyes, and Glinda shifts to basically be on top of Elphaba. My jaw was on the floor. Just lots of touching and Looks all throughout.
When they go to see the Wizard all that casual touching I mentioned previously is multiplied by tenfold, and there are several moments where Elphaba looks at Glinda for reassurance, which was very sweet.
'Defying Gravity' made me just as emotional as I knew it would. I do wish they had hugged but honestly with all the handholding and the staring into each other's eyes, and Glinda wrapping the cloak around Elphaba, they gave us plenty. Once again the acting caught me by surprise (specially from Ariana), both of them communicate so much with just looks.
Anyway my overall thoughts are, these bitches gay, good for them. They did not tone down the subtext at all (like I know some people were worried would happen), and while they didn't make anything explicit either (which I never expected them to*), I'm confident that both Cynthia and Ariana understood the assignment in regards to the kind of relationship Glinda and Elphaba have in canon, and that was enough for me.
*I will admit that a secret corner of my little lesbian heart hoped beyond hope that they would include the scene from the book where Elphaba canonically kisses Glinda (iirc it's supposed to be during Defying Gravity), but like, I always knew they wouldn't.

What does becoming a furry in Homestuck mean? (In reference to your recent Nepeta post)
Okay so the thing is the way that Homestuck treats furries is honestly kind of equivalent to how it treats queerness. As in, Homestuck initially treats it like a joke or a thing to mostly sneer at. Homestuck was very much part of the wave of disaffected ironic assholes of the Newgrounds and Something Awful type, especially to start with, and that sort of relied on shitting on demographics that were seen as weird and permissible to find cringe and make fun of.
Jade comes onto the scene, and a lot of people sort of groan at her whole furry shtick. Jade is largely, however, just a pretty sincere character, and even though she feels some embarassment over the idea of BEING a furry (i.e. her distaste for the idea of actually wearing a fursuit) she nonetheless begins the admirable refrain of combining the finest qualities of humanity with the elegance and nobility of the animal kingdom.
Her earnest affection for all things anthropomorphic sets up more than just her excellent taste. And as much as she is a bit of a pattern-breaker, one pattern she doesn't break is that of having a Signature Animal.
The four beta kids have a bunch of different things associated with them: the four elements, four items, four musical instruments. But the animals are practically integral to who they are as people and characters.
John's attachment to the bunny is obvious, and helps to spur on one of the most emotional scenes in the comic. (For him. Him specifically.)
It's also something deeply precious to him, as it's a gift from every single one of his friends in a very roundabout fashion!
For Rose, Jaspers is half the reason she decided to play the game in the first place. She missed her dead cat so dearly she was willing to play a game that might end the world for it.
(Pictured above, Rose lying about her feelings, water is wet.)
Dave seems to at least feel some affection for crows, or at least shame when he kills them.
And his fusing to become Davesprite is what allows him to survive as a "copy" of the original Dave. Once again, Dave's disaffected irony giving way to the necessity of becoming a furry to save the world.
And for Jade, of course, Bec.
And it's notable that, by the end of the comic, at least THREE of our main beta kids have merged with their animals, and, in a way, become the best versions of themselves.
Jade obviously gets to achieve her dream of becoming a furry, and in doing so gaining power and agency that she was always denied due to her position in the story.
Davepeta, as I stated in a previous post, is the true Final Form of Dave, the pawn that made it to the end of the board, the only surviving character from Homestuck's "original" timeline, and is truly happy with themselves.
And Jasprose appears to have fully hurled herself through the walls Rose put up around herself to protect her image, and thus absolutely mortifies Rose. She just seems to be having a great time.
Homestuck evolved from a story that was deeply cynical and mean-spirited about furrydom, to a story where three of our four starting protagonists, in their truest most powerful forms, combine the qualities of man and beast to achieve self-actualization. And to bring this back around to queerness, these three characters also happen to be canonically queer. So there's that.
This isn't even to get into how this might relate to Troll Lusii and the concept of "growing up" to be more like one's parent on a planet raised by animals, but that's for another day.

the inadvertent reference mother aniseya makes when she says it will get all the jedi killed eventually is not to qui-gon taking in anakin leading to the jedi's fall, but to SIFO-DYAS. sifo-dyas canonically has the gift of foresight and sees that a war is coming and wants to commission an army and the jedi council is like girl what the fuck no. we aren't a fucking army, and kicks him off of it. he goes and commissions it in secret, gets killed, and dooku and sidious then take over the project without anyone knowing. and anakin himself does NOT cause the jedi's fall - having the Chosen One on his side is helpful for sidious, but he already had the Order 66 chip situation in motion from the jump before they even FOUND anakin. much like sol in this episode, it is sifo-dyas with good intentions working OUTSIDE the jedi's rules and without his colleagues approval, on his own feelings through impulse that causes others' downfall.
and i know there's a lot of jedi critical analysis out there about how their "arrogance" led to their downfall but i always find it reductive and this episode really nails that home. the jedi as an institution and belief system, at least in these cases, were in the RIGHT. it was 1 jedi working on his own, with his own interpretation of what the force is telling him, that fucks everyone else over. this isn't to say they don't have their faults that made them easier to manipulate, but that's true of any group.
sol is similar to ANAKIN in the way that he misinterprets his feelings in the force based on his own emotional attachments. anakinâs visions of padme supposedly dying, and his mother, lead him to do crazy shit. solâs supposed connection to osha, and his attachment to his own identity as a savior, that he misreads completely is what leads to his downfall.

YOUR ART IS SO CUTE AUGHâŚâŚ.. love the way u draw scarabia it makes my heart go đđđđđđ
I am curious if you have any Scarabia HCs⌠mayhaps Jamikali HCs?
Thank you!!! <333333
tbh I don't have many headcanons for Scarabia, but imo that's the chillest dorm, even with all the parties. Like, have you seen their dormitory? I wouldn't act up if I lived in a comfy place like that too.
But jamikali. Uhhhh
this is my own sort of turkish palace tv drama. More under the cut. It's gonna be long.
I like to imagine their relationship developing after a nice piece of timeskip (despite most certainly having feelings for each other in college), when they finally learn how it is to live apart from each other, growing out of their destructive behaviors at least for a bit.
My main headcanon and maybe the most delusional one that Kalim would mature up with time, getting more independent when Jamil leaves, though without losing his canonic positivity - in fact just growing up.
While Jamil learns how is it to be simplier and less demanding towards other and himself, traveling alone, not setting down anywhrre for too long. Though the main thing is that they cannot in fact forget each other, and break the attachment despite getting used to each other's absence, and their feelings finally getting some particular shape - and it's impossible to fully let go, no matter how hard they (mostly Jamil) try ;)
I rarely think of a particular reasons that could bring Jamil back to Asim household, though I have one little au concerning this matter which includes long distance between them with no communication, and even some kids, so I may share it one day. so I just keep it on the level of flat concept - Jamil returns after traveling, to either serve again or for Viper family matters.
I love to imagine Jamil's confusion and shyness at the sight of even more confident Kalim after a period of being apart from each other, and Kalim being happy to finally make Jamil look at him differently, which he consciously or subconsciously has been keeping as a goal all the time.
For some reasons I feel like Kalim would take lead in their relationship because he seems bolder to me when it comes to making decisions - Kalim just knows what he wants :/
So it's a hard for Jamil to process all the non-casual compliments, gifts and obvious advances (but not rejecting them, still afraid of his own feelings), just like in this post. Under these circumstances I believe Kalim is the one who attached the most, just because I love crazy devotion and loyalty :P (and Jamil is too used to lie to himself to admit his attachment aloud.)
It's a strange concept, but mostly it's just a huge headcanon I always keep in my head when I draw them - an emotional bond that just won't break, no matter if there's distance, time or silence between them.
It's hard for me to imagine them trying each other out during college years - too many predicaments and prejudices, they are too used to each other, and for their relationahip to work out they both need time to emotionaly mature up and... just have a rest from each other.
Anyway loving them endlessly.
it would be easier to just list the goddamn headcanons but I always talk too much I am so sorry
#ask#anon#also Kalim gives the craziest fairytale romance book prince compliments ever and Jamil unironically enjoys them. he told me himself#also I think Kalim can't keep his hands to himself and always seeks physical contact#and Jamil gets crazy flustered by it just because he is Jamil and he probably can't react normally on anything#I hope that makes some sense#art#sketch#jamikali#kalijami#TYSM ANON <3333333#no normal illustrations but a lot of text again#well I guess that's what blog's for#twst#twisted wonderland#scarabia

Hobie Headcannons cs some of yâall be treating this man like heâs some white goth nga thatâs never had black experiences đđ these are js off the top of my head so donât tweak out⌠JUH VIBE
Heâs most likely Jamaican/British or African/British because heâs from the UK
He has had multiple people try to force him into playing basketball at least once because heâs 6â5
âMan, so you telling me you ainât never tried going D1?â
âNever even played.â
âNIGGA WHAT?â
Has gotten his hand popped multiple times from touching his hair while getting it done
âHow many do you have left?â
âBoy move that damn hand.â
Gives horrible advice then says âbut I donât kno, thats just meâ
âShe cheated on me bru. Like cheated. Called me ON FACETIME while they was hunchin.â
âMe personally I would find the guy and start a gas leak in their house while his family is sleeping. But ion kno, thatâs just me tho.â
Played soccer as a kid with a makeshift paper soccer ball
Was one of those kids who were forced to finish their plate before leaving the dinner table so he would sit at the table till the next day playing with his food
Illegally listens to and downloads most of the music he likes
âWanna do a Spotify blend?â
âYâall use that shi?â
âwho df are you broâŚâ
Will side eye you till you burst out laughing if you both see something crazy in publicÂ
Sung chi-chi man religiously as a child before he knew what the song meant (iykyk)
Takes pictures of white people with braids or locs
Hobie: Attachment: 1
disgusting creaturesâŚ
Hangs trash bags on his doorknobs around the house
Had entire debates as a child with older people at the cookout on why he should be able to eat ribs instead of hotdogs
âThese steaks for the adults, go grab a lil hotdog and a juice.â
âBut why? Canât we both eat and enjoy the same things without you having to dehumanize me and view me only as a child without preferences for food?â
âBoy go get that fuckin hotdog and caprisun get out my face.â
Had his hairline pushed back astronomically far when he was little (Nigerian boy canon event)
On the other hand he probably never had his hair cut as a kid and started free-forming when he was young (Iâm conflicted between both)
Constantly had a smart mouth as a kid (he still does), like CONSTANTLY. Once he got his lips snatched and balled into a fist
Would steal, get caught and say is âit cause Iâm black?â
âYo, were you stealing back there?â
âWhy bruv? Cause Iâm black?â
âNevermind.â
Touches hot ass food with his bare hands. Like he will flip pancakes with his hands.
Can literally sleep anywhere.. like anywhere. People in his band have pictures of him hunched over on sinks, sleeping on bathroom floors, in bathtubs with the curtains wrapped around him, on the bus. Anywhere you can think of.
He doesnât spend much money on birthday gifts or gifts in general. He likes to make things by hand even if he has to spend a few weeks
After his shows he loves to meet people in the crowd, even if they freak out. He isnât really for the idolizing so he doesnât know how to express his emotions too much on that.
âOH MY GOD HOBIE!?!â
âi aint think i was that special but thanks luvâ
⢠His jacket makes HELLA noise and he doesnât realize it. Just like if he had beads in his hair.
âimma get bro good this time..â
âHobie donât even try to scare me, i hear that big ass jacket thumpin down the hallway.â
⢠The first time he kissed a girl with lip piercings like his, they got caught on each other. They sat there for almost half and hour trying to untangle each other without hurting each other.
⢠Heâs definitely been called a few different celebrities before, none really looked like him.
âAre you playboi carti?!â
âBruv.â
over.
âYour that rockstar dude lancey right?â
âbruâŚâ
and over.
âyou Opium?â
âIâm starting to feel this is lowkey sterotypicalâŚâ
and over again.
⢠When heâs in the pit at concerts he looks out for the younger people towards the front to make sure they donât get thrashed around too hard.
âyou good youngân?â
âI CANT FEEL MY FACEâ
âthatâs cool tooâ
⢠He only really steals from big corporations, not small family owned places. Just out of respect. Even when they say he can take things for free he still pays, maybe a few dollars over budget.
⢠He loves collecting trinkets and little things he finds on the streets or backstage. He has multiple spoons, buttons and scrap fabrics laying around
⢠When he first learned about capitalism he realized it everywhere, like EVERYWHERE. That boy was pissed.
⢠He loves girls who can beat him tf up, like whoop his ass. Or girls who will cuss him tf out. Sometimes you both will be arguing and heâll just sit back and let you go off on him.
anyways yawl thatâs it lmk if I should drop some more this was fun asl to make đ

If Itâs Meant to Be | John Shelby x Reader
Request: yes by anonymous
Pairing: John Shelby x fem!Reader
Summary: John and (Y/N) were friends when they were younger. Life, as life does, pulls them apart for some time before they find each other again while (Y/N) is helping someone who happened to be lost.
Warnings: season 4 spoilersâŚmaybe?? (Iâm re-writing canon to make things better), language
Word Count: 4450
A/N: if Iâm being honest I quite enjoyed following your prompt/request, anon! I hope I was able to add everything you were hoping into it and that it turned out along the lines of what you were imagining! Iâm sorry that itâs taken ages for me to share. Enjoy! :)
IâD LOVE TO KNOW WHAT YOU THINK! YOUR COMMENTS & REBLOGS HELP ME WRITE!
comment/message me if you want to be tagged!
If itâs meant to be, itâll be. That phrase gets thrown around so much. John Shelby always thought that he and (Y/N) (Y/L/N) were meant to be. But things didnât quite work out that wayâŚat first.
They were practically inseparable as teens. All it took was one meeting near the cut for the two to know that they wanted to be in each others lives for as long as possible.
Wherever (Y/N) was, John was to be found close by. If John was out doing something, nine times out of ten (Y/N) was helping out in some way.
Family members often joked that the two were attached at the hip. Ada even went as far as to conspire with (Y/N)âs younger sister, the two saying that they were excited to become future sister-in-laws.
But things donât always work out to plan.
The dream of the families uniting as one through John and (Y/N)âs union crumbled slowly rather than it just being one, major blow.
(Y/N) started delving more into her studies; having big dreams of graduating and going further in schooling so that she could make something of herself. Sheâd always wanted to have more than just the lower-level jobs that Small Heath had to offer. She still tried to see John as much as she could, but the nights that were once spent gallivanting around the streets together had now been swapped for study sessions.
John couldnât be completely mad at his friend. He wanted her to succeed and have the life that she was dreaming of. Sure he missed her company, and truly relished in the time that they were still able to spend together, but to say that he was now left completely in his lonesome would be a lie.
John met Martha Davies when she and her family moved to Small Heath.
Unlike how he was with (Y/N), who he tried so hard to hide his deeper feelings for behind the mask of friendship, John immediately went forward with expressing his desire to get to know Martha better.
While (Y/N) was busy with studying, John was busy with Martha. It was easy to tell how quickly the two had fallen for each other.
The news - though it really shouldnât have given how quickly the two becameâŚacquainted with each other - came as a shock just only six months into John knowing Martha. Hell, (Y/N) had only met her a handful of times before John was excitedly telling her the news that Martha was pregnant and he was going to be a father.
(Y/N) should have been happy for him. And on the outside she tried her best to present her emotions that way. But deep down, her real feelings that sheâd been harboring towards her friend for years now were being crushed. She always pushed them aside for fear that he only purely saw her as a friend; for the fear that her revealing them would cause him to run from her life forever. Now there was no way that heâd ever know of them.
John, who was just a few months shy from his final teenage year, was now going to be a husband and father â he felt it was only right that he marry Martha given the fact that theyâd now share a child.
If John was going to grow up this suddenly, (Y/N) felt that she should to. Her prelininary studies were finished and she was ready to go and make something of herself.
And so she moved to London, one step closer to her dream but many miles away from the person who grew up alongside her.
â 1924 â
Ada was the first to learn that (Y/N) was back in town. She didnât waste any time in inviting her to what the Shelby woman promised would be âan amazing eveningâ.
Many things had changed since (Y/N) had last seen the Shelbys. One of the more major ones was the fact that they had quickly rose into wealth and power.
On this particular evening, Tommy and his new wife, Grace, were holding one of their regular events; where people of power and prospective business partners gathered to shake hands and attempt to make deals. It was a circle that (Y/N) felt she was so far removed from.
Adaâs persistence was hard to ignore though. She kept focusing on the fact that it was a different sort of event for the family invovled, and that everyone would be thrilled to see her again. (Y/N) couldnât deny the fact that she, too, would be overjoyed to see the Shelbys againâŚeven if it meant that her heart might break.
She made sure to wear one of her more sophisticated outfits and that her appearance was as perfect as it could get. When the time to leave arrived, she checked over herself in the mirror one last time before grabbing her clutch and heading down to the car that was waiting for her.
The manor she pulled up to left her in awe. Never did she expect to be welcomed into a place as grand as this. But if there was anyone in her life, past or present, who could be capable of obtaining this sort of grandeur, it would no doubt be Tommy Shelby.
â(Y/N)!â Of course Ada was the first person to find her. âIâm so happy you came!â the brunette exclaimed as she hasitly pulled her into a hug.
âYou doubted I would?â (Y/N) asked, trying to focus on her friend rather than the crowd of people present in the grand foyer area of the manor. If thereâs this many people in the entry room, how many would be in the banquet hall? she thought to herself.
âNever,â the other woman shook her head, âcome with me. The others will be so excited that youâre here!â she then said, taking hold of (Y/N)âs forearm so that she could lead her into the banquet hall. (Y/N) hesitantly followed, not quite wanting to see the man she used to call âbest friendâ just yet.
Thankfully Ada pulled her to Polly first. (Y/N) was happy to see her. Polly was just as much an aunt to her as she was the Shelby siblings. And, much like Ada had promised, the older woman was thrilled to see her again.
Time quickly slipped away and (Y/N) truly felt like the tiny group that had been assembled were the only ones in the room. She quickly slipped into a comfortable state, the crowds of people truly disappearing as the women caught up on everything theyâd missed out on in the othersâ lives.
Ada was the first to be pulled away. She was found by one of the houseâs staff â which blew (Y/N)âs mindâŚTommy had staff now?! â who needed her because Karl was becoming restless and ready for bed. She promised that sheâd only be gone briefly and that sheâd find Polly and (Y/N) again as soon as she was finished.
Polly got pulled away too. Tommy needed her to meet a prospective business partner. He greeted (Y/N) warmly â after he realized it was her â and expressed his gladness to see her before asking his aunt to join him for a moment.
Now (Y/N) was alone in this crowded hall of people. She stood and did some crowd-watching for some time (people just being people truly fascinated her) before deciding to go and find some refreshments to indulge in.
But she didnât make it to said refreshments tableâŚand it seemed that she wasnât the only person who was alone at the party.
Although there were people moving all around, it seemed as though she was the only person who noticed the small boy who was cowering into himself with fear present in his eyes.
Cautiously, and with a friendly smile, she approached the child, whose bottom lip was quivering. It was evident that heâd been crying. âDo you need help, sweetheart?â she asked him, keeping her voice calm and level in hopes to not spook him any more than he already had been.
The boy only nodded his head, his wide eyes matching hers. The desperation present in them nearly broke (Y/N)âs heart.
âAre you hurt?â she asked a question.
The boy shook his head, ringing his small hands together.
(Y/N) inwardly sighed in relief. At least heâs not hurt, she thought to herself, now what could be the matter? After racking her brain, she asked another question, âare you looking for someone?â
The boy nodded this time. More relief filled (Y/N)âs body. He said nothing in addition to his nod, though, so she still had some more questions to ask.
âA friend?â she asked, remembering that sheâd seen several children running around the room earlier.
The boy shook his head.
âA grown up?â
The boy nodded.
Ok, on the right track, (Y/N) thought, nodding along with him. âYour parents?â she asked.
âM-my dad,â the boy finally spoke, his mouse-like voice breaking (Y/N)âs heart. What he said next shattered it even further into pieces, âmy mummyâs not here anymore. SheâŚmy aunt said she went to heaven.â
âIâm sorry to hear that, sweetie,â (Y/N) gave her condolences with a frown. âHow about we go find your dad, hmm?â she then asked, offering another friendly smile.
âOk,â the boy nodded, reaching his hand out for (Y/N) to take. The woman smiled as she accepted it, and the two began walking, searching through the crowd for his father.
âLet me know if you see him, ok?â (Y/N) said to the boy. Sheâd just realized that she had no idea who his father was.
âJohnny there you are!â a young girl exclaimed, her eyes set on the boy (Y/N) had been helping.
âWe were looking everywhere for you!â a second girl chimed in.
(Y/N) looked down at the boy, whose expression hadnât changed. She crouched down slightly to be more on his level. âDo you know them?â she asked him.
The boy nodded. âTheyâre my sisters,â he answered, his eyes still focused on the girls, who were now approached them.
âWho are you, miss?â the older of the two girls asked once they stopped in front of (Y/N) and the boy.
âMy nameâs (Y/N),â the woman introduced herself with a smile, âyour brother was lost and needed some help finding your dad.â
âWell we donât know where dad is either,â the younger of the two girls stated in a matter-of-fact tone, âbut Johnny can come with us. Weâre dancing.â
(Y/N) looked to the boy, who had calmed down significantly now. âIs it ok if you stay with your sisters?â she asked, her eyebrows raised slightly.
The boy nodded his head, the slightest of smiles now present on his face. (Y/N) smiled back, happy that he was no longer upset. But he caught her hand before she was able to stand up straight again. âWill you stay with us, Miss (Y/N)?â he asked in a sweet voice.
The question really wasnât up for decision in (Y/N)âs mind. She knew her answer right away. Hell, she had nothing else better to do, or no one else she needed to seeâŚso why not pass the time with these kids? âOf course,â she answered with a smile, laughing softly as the three children all cheered in joy. The little group wasted no time falling into beat with the music and dancing with smiles on their faces.
Unbeknownst to (Y/N), Polly and Ada had regrouped and were now watching her and the children as they danced.
âI wonder if she knows,â Ada queried out loud, watching her friend dance with her neices and nephew with a small smile.
âI donât think she does,â Polly answered, shaking her head. A tight-lipped smile was also present on her face.
âYou two seen any of the kids anywhere?â the voice of John Shelby came from behind the ladies, âran off a while agoâŚhavenât fucking seen them since.â
Ada and Polly shared a look, both biting back smiles. John was able to catch said look.
âWell go onâŚshare it,â he pressed them, his brow furrowing in annoyance. He didnât have time for thisâŚthere were drinks to drink and ladies to charm. If they thought heâd be spending the entire evening chasing after his children, theyâd be dead wrong.
âYour youngest was up with Karl. He was asleep when I went to attend to him,â Ada shared some information about Maxwell Shelby, Johnâs four year old.
âAnd the others?â Johnâs brows were now raised.
âTheyâre right over there,â Polly answered, pointing a finger in the direction of the dancing group.
John wasted no time following her finger and when he did, his world stopped. No. ThatâŚthat couldnât be herâŚcould it? Questions raced through his mind as memories flooded back. God, she looks more beautiful than the day she left me, he was so entranced that he just about forgot how to breathe.
âJohn?â
The voice of his aunt brought him back to reality, and he shook his head as he snapped out of the trance she put him in. A hand went up to scratch the back of his neck instinctively, and he hoped that he could play off his staring. The grins on both of the womenâs faces told another story.
âHe didnât hear a word you said, Pol,â Ada snickered, loving the fact that she was able to poke fun at her brother.
âOh fuck off,â John grumbled, trying so hard to keep his focus on his family and not the beautiful woman that was still playing with his children. A silence fell between the trio and John took it to do just what he was stopping himself from moments ago. âIâŚI, uh, I shouldâŚâ he stopped his babbling, clearing his throat and trying to regain his wits. Christ, just the sight of her had him babbling like a fucking child. âI should probably uh, probably go over and see how theyâre getting on,â his statement sounded more like a suggestionâŚwhich was weird because he was essentially suggesting for himself to go and do it.
âGo on then,â Polly wasted no time in agreeing with her nephew, motioning over to where (Y/N) and the children still were.
âYeah,â John agreed, like it wasnât even his idea in the first place. He didnât move though.
âGrow a pair and get on with it, John,â Ada snapped him out of the trance he once again fell into, still grinning at the fact that John was very much acting like a lovesick fool at the moment. In fact she hadnât seem him like this sinceâŚwell since he was around (Y/N).
With one last glare, John finally heeded to their nudges and started off in (Y/N)âs direction. Her back was to him as he approached, and she was dancing with his eldest son, Johnny. His daughters, Jane and Katie, did see him coming though, their eyes lighting up when they realized he was there.
âDaddy!â they exclaimed in unison.
The yelling of the girls made (Y/N) stop what she was doing and turn. Seeing the person who theyâd addressed made the breath get caught in her throat. No. It canât be, she thought to herself, her heartrate quickening by the second.
John was - also - back to staring again. He still couldnât believe that she was standing right in front of him.
âDadâŚdad, did you hear me?â the sound of Katieâs impatient voice brought him back to reality. He focused in on his daughter as he heard the sweet sounds of (Y/N)âs giggles. They made it feel like there was heat being placed on the back of his neck.
âIâŚI didnât, sweetheart, Iâm sorry,â he sheepishly answered his child.
âI was telling you that this is (Y/N). She found Johnny and then agreed to stay and dance with us. Sheâs really nice,â Katie explained again.
Her being referred to gave John the go ahead to look at (Y/N) again. This time he willed himself to stay focused and not get lost in the memories they shared together, or how beautiful she looked.
âShe helped me because I was crying and didnât know where anyone was,â Johnny shared, âsheâs really friendly. I think we could all be friends.â
John couldnât help but chuckle a little as he watched (Y/N) stiffle her laugh. âYeah, Johnny, I, uhâŚIââ God you look like a babbling fool right now, get ahold on yourself, John-boy, was ringing out in Johnâs mind.
(Y/N) watched him intently, waiting to hear how he would address the past between them. Would he address the past between them?
âI used to know (Y/N)âŚwe used to be best friends when we was younger,â he finally shared with the children, feeling silly for holding his breath as he waited for their response.
There was a momentâs pause as the three little Shelbys looked at each other. It felt like eternity to the two adults, who looked as if they wanted to say so much to each other. Soon smiles formed on the childrenâs faces.
âThatâs great that youâre already friends with her, daddy!â Katie exclaimed, beaming up at John.
âWhen can she come over?â Jane eagerly asked, her question making (Y/N) laugh as her heart bursted with love.
âThatâll be up to her,â John answered, laughing at his childrens innocent questions, the heat still creeping up his neck.
âYour father and I will have to talk about it,â (Y/N) added her own response, a sweet smile present on her features. She then looked at John, her expression telling him that theyâd have to find each other later to catch up.
âPlease talk about it later, daddy!â Johnny exclaimed, a pleading look present on his face.
âI will, Johnny, I will,â he assured the boy, nodding both to him and to (Y/N), silently accepting her invitation.
(Y/N) was resting against one of the balconies on the side terrace of the manor later that evening when she heard footsteps approaching her. She didnât bother to turn and look; having a good idea of who could be coming.
âYou followed through with the invitation,â she commented as John came to a rest beside her.
âAlways do, angel,â John responded, his usage of her old nickname making her heart flutter.
It was one that he frequently used when they were youngerâŚshe was always doing the right thing; always acting like an angel. John loved to call her it in a teasing manner and though sheâd wrinkle her nose up when he used it, she secretly loved it. Tonight, however, he used it in a sincere manner, and it just about made (Y/N) weak at the knees.
âYou donât know how surprised I was when I saw you with me kids,â John admitted then, looking out at the grounds his brother owned.
âThe surprise was pretty clear on your face, John,â (Y/N) responded, giggling as his eyes shot to match hers; wide in surprise.
âNever was good at hiding stuff from you,â he said in a sheepish tone, shaking his head. âHowâd you find out about this?â he asked then.
âAda found out I was back in town. She invited me,â she answered. John made a mental note to thank his sister later. âIt was nice meeting your kids,â she said with a smile.
âTheyâll probably talk about you for days,â he said with a laugh, looking away from her for a moment. âOnly good things Iâve left,â he mused, his tone sounded solemn.
Silence fell between them as (Y/N) chewed on her bottom lip, wondering if she should offer her condolences or not. She didnât know if the wounds were still fresh, or when it had even happened. âIâm sorry about Martha, John,â she finally said.
âI am, too,â he responded, looking down at his feet as he took a deep breath, âfeel bad for those kids most of all. They didnât really even get to know her.â
âThat mustâve been tough,â (Y/N) mused.
âIt wasâŚâ John agreed, âit has been,â he then corrected.
âIâm home now, so IâmâŚâ
âYouâre home?â John cut into her statement, his eyes widening as they found hers again.
âI am,â she affirmed, smiling softly before continuing, âIâd be happy to help you with your kids if you need at all.â
John smiled as he heard what she said. He couldnât lie, he was suprised by how gracious she was being. There were a thousand words he wanted to say, but all he was able to get out was: âthank you, (Y/N).â
For her, it was enough.
Silence fell between them once again as (Y/N) wrestled with yet another thought; one that sheâd been wanting to say since he joined her outside. After a few moments, she finally took the leap and said it.
âYou know, I always thought weâd end up togetherâŚI always thought that itâd be us,â she made sure to train her eyes on the darkened landscape as she spoke. She couldnât handle seeing Johnâs expression as it changed.
âIâŚâ John hesitated.
âThat wasnât me trying to insert myself into anything. Iâm sorry if it sounded that way,â she scrambled to cover up, not even thinking of how he could have taken her admission. âI justâŚI wanted that to be known. I spent too long dancing around it without saying what I felt,â she took a deep breath, debating on whether to add anything more. There was one more thing she was burning to say, âI had-have a lot of love for you, John.â
It took a few moments for him to digest what she had said. Never did he think that sheâd be admitting these feelings to him. He always thought that heâd have to keep his boxed away for the rest of his life. But now sheâd put hers out in the open, it would be silly of him to withhold his.
âHey,â he started, wanting to get her to look at him before he shared his confession. His one word statement succeeded in getting her eyes to match his. âIâve always loved you, (Y/N),â he admitted, his voice holding a sincereness he hadnât used in a while.
âYouâre being serious?â she asked, the corners of her lips twitching as she wanted to smile so big right now.
âSo serious,â he whispered, smiling as he spoke.
âIâŚâ she paused to let out a laugh, feeling so silly for what she was about to admit to him, âI really wanna kiss you right now, John Shelby.â
âThen kiss me, (Y/N),â he wasted no time in agreeing to what she was suggesting, slowly moving to rest his hands on her waist. He was gentle in his touch, silently letting her know that she could break away if she wanted. She didnât.
(Y/N) reached to take hold of his jacketâs lapels before leaning in slightly. John got the message, meeting her halfway so that their lips couldâfinallyâ meet. The â what felt like â lifetimeâs wait for this moment was most certainly worth it.
â Three Years Later â
âKatie!â (Y/N) called out, knowing that the eldest child was in the next room over. Her joyful scream was a distinctive one, and the woman was able to hear it amongst at least two others. It didnât take long before the girl appeared in the archway of the room John and (Y/N) were sitting in.
âYes?â she asked, trying to catch her breath. It was obvious that sheâd been playing.
âI need you and your siblings to try and keep your voices down, ok?â (Y/N) kindly asked.
âWhyâs that, mum?â the young girl inquired.
(Y/N) froze before she could give her answer, her mouth agape. Katie had just called her âmumâ.
Thankfully John was able to step in and continue the conversationâbecause it had became obvious to him that (Y/N) couldnât. âBecause mumâs just gotten Ella to sleep. We donât want her to wake again,â he explained, motioning to the baby that was sleeping on (Y/N)âs chest.
âOk, dad,â Katie conceded without a fight. Both John and (Y/N) gave a soft thanks and watched as she went to leave. Sheâd only moved from the arch for a second before returning to say one last thing, âyou should know that itâs really Max who was making all of the noise.â
Her statement made both adults laugh. âGo on,â John waved her off. The girl gave one more toothy smile before running off to her siblings.
âDid sheâŚ?â (Y/N) finally got out, surprise laced into her words.
âShe did,â John grinned as he looked at his wife, âmum.â
It may have seemed like nothing special to someone looking on, but to (Y/N), what just happened was monumental. This was the first time Katie Shelby had called her mum.
(Y/N) and John hardly spent a moment separated since the night they rekindled their friendshipâŚwhich quickly turned into a relationshipâŚwhich quickly turned into them getting married and having a child together.
With their dear little Eloise being born just five months ago, both felt that their family was now perfect. But even though (Y/N) took on the role of mother to Johnâs four children in every sense of the term, she never forced the kids to address her by the name. Martha was their mum, and not even her being gone could change that.
One by one, though, the kids began calling her mum. Katie was the last to hold out. The eldest girl would always address her as â(Y/N)â, and (Y/N) was perfectly fine with that. Which is why when the girl used the âm-wordâ just now, she froze in her tracks. She couldnât help but blush as she looked at John, who was grinning like a fool.
âShe called me mum,â she whispered again, more to herself than anything.
âShe did,â John repeated, his voice soft as he smiled at his wife.
If itâs meant to be, itâll be is the phrase that always gets thrown around. Luckily â thankfully â for John and (Y/N), it was meant to be.
