february and everything after
Post-production for me consisted of colour grading, finding a piece of music for Peer to use diagetically (because I wanted to) and creating a title card/credits.
Colour grading: the longest process - I am not a colour grader. I am lucky I know how to use photoshop because I would honestly be lost without that knowledge! I did the absolute best I could. I’ve talked with Eva about how we probably need much more attention out on how to colour grade, or it should possibly be done out of house altogether. The idea that I could ruin the shots I’ve carefully prepared and lit just by not knowing what I’m doing is very scary! During shooting, Eva, Alex and I noticed a weird red tint on some of the shots, particularly when we stacked ND filters. I assured myself that I could fix this in post, because there really wasn't anything else we could do. We tried to offset it in camera, but generally it wouldn't leave! I found that doing a Node Tree where the 1st node was for Lift Gamma and Gain (as Paul thankfully advised me!) which I labelled LGG was a really good first step. Once the levels were correct (and I had ensured I was working in the correct colour space), I was able to start correcting issues, namely the red tint. I think in almost all the scenes I was able to eliminate it or work around it, especially scene 8 I think worked well. For scene 8 I layered various tints, making a 2nd node for a greener Lift, and the creating a 3rd node to bring the warmth back in the Gamma and Gain. This went a long way to adding depth and removing the dreaded red tint. I also did some selective masking for example on Harry’s jacket which had partly turned maroon. But I was able to make it blue/black again with the colour dropper mask and some blurring. I did this for any issue that had specific areas to change, another one was the white plastic bag in the loch. (Though that is the one I’m least happy with). Generally I kept up this process of LGG node and then multiple layers pushing green and then yellows and reds in layers until the shots had much more depth to them.
But in scene 11 (the last one) the red tint made the shore look distinctly meat-like, while the Jo's skin (especially) was also reddish-pink, so I couldn't change it. I tried to mask it but it looked even more obvious that something strange was happening. I managed to mask the reverse shot on Phoebe thankfully, but alas the whole thing is more pink than I wanted.
Generally I think I did well. I have to say I am curious about what a professional colour-grader would be able to do with it!
Song for Scene 4
We needed a different piece of music from scene 3 to 4, to show a change of time, and perhaps mood. Arina Brovanova (angel) had scored just one diagetic song to be used for this, so we needed another! (Though hers was great and is in scene 3). I had been thinking about how sometimes the most tense/best atmosphere creation with music comes from juxtaposition and the irony of using a happy song whilst such a tense scene was unfolding seemed like it might work really well. I remembered a song I had helped my friend Charis produce (that she wrote and composed, and I did harmonies for her and our friend Ben did some guitar on) called 'in your arms', which was a very feel-good song about vulnerability and happiness within that. It's a very sweet song but in this scene it ramps up the tension and I think it works really well! Peer and Orla happily agreed :)
Title card
I have been making film titles since 1st year, and all throughout my time at Napier. I love animation and typography, so I always opt to make titles when I can. For Saint Catherines, Orla and I thought combining the wave sounds you hear at the end with a water animation might be nice, so I animated a wave washing the title away (thanks Orla!).

Right, so here's an elaboration of what I was feeling last night re: Neurodivergency. Long story short, I used to be a right prick about things like self diagnosis, to the point where as a teenager I made an incredibly ableist anti-self dx post on here using an awful slur (and instead of just saying, omg I didn't know it was a slur I just thought it was a run of the mill insult akin to calling someone a walnut brain when they're being ignorant, I doubled down and tried to argue it wasn't a slur 🤦♀️ It is. I'm not even going to hint at what it was, just know it was bad) and it's been years and I still feel horribly guilty about it, and the people who called me out on it, unfollowed and/or blocked me were 100% correct in doing so, because while I was a teenager, I was still old enough to know better.
But anyway, as I've gotten older and realised the diagnoses I was given as a teen don't quite explain everything, and accepted that I most likely am autistic (possibly AuDHD, but I'm not quite as confident about the adhd part), and tried to seek official assessment and diagnosis, obviously I've discovered that as an adult in Aotearoa, that's a shit show. Every qualified professional in my region is booked out to a point they're not even accepting waitlist additions, and assessment costs range from about $1000-$2000. I've pretty much given up on getting a dx at this point, at least for the interim.
But after talking to my friend last night and his diagnostic process and what he and his other ND friends have found regarding getting that little official report... it doesn't necessarily mean shit beyond not having people accuse you of lying. There is no real "treatment" for being autistic (I don't count ABA, that's gross and doesn't actually "fix" shit), so unless you're really just seeking to have your life validated with a label, it's not inherently necessary. You know your lived experiences and feelings (and consistently high RAADS-R score 👀😂).
This is a friend who I've always gotten along with, and shared some interests with, but never really had an "omg here's a thing we both really click on" moment, but boy howdy when this conversation started and we started talking about it, that was the click moment.
And my best friend, who was sitting across from me, did that thing where people go, "you're not autistic are you?" then paused and clearly had a moment of "oh wait holy shit", because her face changed so quick when she thought about it for like 10 seconds 😂 And both her brothers are autistic but have very different levels of masking, stimming etc., so she's not totally ignorant to the various ways autism can present either 😅
But yeah idk, I'm still mad at my younger self for being a c-word, and I do wish I had access to an official diagnosis, but fuck it, my partner and my ex think I'm autistic, autistic people around me think I'm autistic, I'm probably autistic, and I'm going to treat myself with the kindness and patience and understanding that I deserve. (And also probably do even more research on autism than I already have hahahaha)

superwholock wasn’t that bad ppl just got very very into it and the more popular smth is the harder it falls into the pits of cringe. most popular shows/fandoms have issues but ppl are still allowed to enjoy them without being as heavily shamed as ppl who still enjoy supernatural or sherlock (doctor who was allowed back in after we got a female doctor and it became slightly trendier again). i understand the fun of shit talking things sometimes when they’re over the top or a little silly etc, esp if u were once obsessed with that thing so it feels like u have the authority, but imo it’s gotten a little out of control to the point of just..... bullying ppl for simply enjoying a tv show. and i can tell u rn, ppl with adhd and autism esp who hyperfixated on those shows and still enjoy them out of nostalgia and comfort? will feel esp attacked by rsd (rejection sensitive dysphoria) and will feel shamed into pretending not to enjoy things. which is a shitty feeling. also, even if u don’t have rsd, ur allowed to enjoy things lol. again, just casually shitting on smth u used to like (or not) is not always that harmful u don’t have to like everything obviously and we all do it casually sometimes, but for specific interests it feels a bit out of control and it makes me uncomfortable bc like........ y’all remember when u were bullied in high school for liking these things right? and how shitty that felt? like pls bc critical yes but at a certain point it’s like...... ok to just. let ppl enjoy things even if u think they’re cringe or embarrassing or whatever. things don’t have to be perfect (nothing is) to be allowed as long as u are critical and aware, and most of u understand that by now, i’ve seen countless posts about it... but for some reason it only applies to certain things??? if u like certain shows or certain books or bands not approved by the hivemind then ur cast out and just super cringe and must wear the cone of shame. tumblr used to be a fun place where ppl were allowed to be overenthusiastic and nerdy and fully enjoy every dumb thing they wanted and now it just feels like a weird version of high school again let’s..... not do that. let’s go back to being embarrassing idiots with interests PLS for the love of god
~ sincerely, a nerodivergent girl who has emotional attachments to “cringe” shows and thought we were OVER this dammit
one of these days i’m gonna post a harmless yet controversial opinion and then it’s over for you hoes
#i have had long talks about this with various nd friends#u know how many ppl have told me secretly that they still think sherlock is fun to watch but they never post about it???#like are they perfect shows? of course not. but goddamn#let me repeat myself for ppl who cant read: u can be critical! u dont have to like shows! u are allowed to point out the problems!#but u can ALSO let ppl enjoy things at the same time!#ffs yall let twilight and hannibal and riverdale stay but not supernatural???? tha dont make no sense luv x#mine#cringe culture

Can you write more on your disabled Poe headcanons?! These are so interesting!!
oh bless you for giving me an opportunity to go on an infodump about this, *rubs my hands together*
I've mentioned it before (hell, I've made two gifsets on it) but Poe is coded as being incredibly neurodivergent - specifically autistic and adhd. this directly impacts and influences how he does things and, quite frankly imo, how people treat him.
(almost all of the pilots in star wars can be easily read as nd for that matter. now take a look at how often pilots get called 'arrogant' and 'impulsive' or how easily starfighter pilots get on well with force-sensitives and jedi, who are coded as being incredibly autistic. it paints a telling picture that the in-universe attitude toward pilots isn't so different from how people treat neurodivergent folk irl, especially ones with adhd).
back on track with poe being neurodivergent: he has to ask for clarification on things frequently, he gets fidgety and agitated when his usual routine is abruptly shifted. he's a very tactile person, obviously, but in tros he doesn't like being touched very much if it's initiated by somebody else. he doesn't mask his emotions at all, he has meltdowns (the scene on the bridge in tlj and also there's a moment in poe dameron: free fall that counts as a meltdown as well). he stims and can't stay still for very long, he's constantly bouncing around even if he's staying in the same spot.
canonically, some pilots do wind up with chronic pain from years of being in a cockpit (wedge has chronic pain from that and also just in gen from the galactic civil war), and I headcanon that poe definitely has chronic pain. I even wrote a fic about it.
he has scars and lots of them. I don't see this talked about often, but he does. He gets stabbed in the hand by Terex in the comics, and he gets stabbed a stressful amount of times in the torso/chest in Freefall. This isn't counting scars he might have gotten during various fights or crashes (he probably might even have some burn scars from, again, all the explosions he's been in close contact with). And even though it doesn't make an appearance in tros (which I'm very saddened by), I think the cut on his cheek from his time aboard the Finalizer definitely scars too.
he has hand tremors! there's a term for this, i believe, my friend told me it when she suggested the headcanon but I can't remember it atm. it flares up a little more than normal when he's anxious (you can see it in the movies, it tremors when he's worrying about his loved ones. it doesn't come up at all when he's in the middle of a fight though).
*smacks table* this is actually more coded into his character than a headcanon, but he has anxiety, depression and ptsd. he has an alarming lack of value for his own life and at the very least has some suicidal ideation happening (he wakes up from a crash in poe dameron: free fall wishing he'd died and...I don't enjoy citing resistance r*born, but he point blank tells the entire resistance if he thought it would stop the First Order, he'd sacrifice himself in a heartbeat. he's also incredibly prone to catastrophic thinking, especially in freefall, which is when your anxiety completely tosses 'logic' out of the window and all you can see are the worst possible outcomes and you accept that as the reality of your situation.
BB-8's model of droid can technically be considered a therapy droid! They were the successor type of a different medical droid model, and I definitely headcanon that BB-8 is the in-universe equivalent of an emotional support animal (I had the hc for awhile, but kudos to this twitter thread for making me aware it's genuinely a possibility!)
I also headcanon that probably after tros when he gets shot (& it's left mostly untreated for awhile + he flies frequently on the arm), it eventually results in some mobility loss in that arm. again, i wrote a fic on it.
#ask box#nonnie nonnie#disabled tag#poe dameron#suicidal ideation cw#i'd like to point out that my brain is at all times just revolving hearts around 'disabled poe' so like i do have a lot of thoughts on it#this is just what i could remember at the moment#i also have a lot of thoughts on him being neurodivergent!#but this is actually one of the many reasons i love his dynamic with leia. we stan two very disabled generals who are each other's family#and it's also something i like playing around with when i'm writing him with my oc volya bc she's disabled too#my headcanons

Hey :) I’ve never requested anything before so I’m sorry if i do it wrong hahah
But could I request something where instead of ward faking his death it’s rafe who has to do it and none of the pouges know about your relationship until it’s you crying in the dock instead of Sarah. And when you and the piggies go on the “rescue” mission to get Sarah off of the boat you see rafe and eventually end up staying with him and leaving your friends
I’m sorry if this is really long xx thank you for taking the time to read my request
R E A C H I N G F O R T H E S U R F A C E
SEASON TWO SPOILERS!
rafe Cameron x Reader
warnings: angst with a big a, canon rafe (maybe a bit softer), toxic relationship, rafe playing the victim card, death and talks of suicide.
a/n: I feel like it is of importance that I tell you all that I have done everything in my power not to romanticize the rafe cameron character and if I have then please kindly let me know because sometimes it can be hard. However I still need to say that I am writing through the eyes of the “reader” who very much still cares for this boy, which also means that the way the reader deals with things might not have been your way. If any more warnings should be included in the beginning, feel free to let me know. I hope you enjoy this fic which I am actually very proud of. A big thanks to @snkkat who is my proof reading buddy. Also thanks for sending in the request, I LOVED writing it! <3
They say that when you die your life flashes before your eyes, but how about when you watch someone else die? For as you watched him die, the life and moments the two of you had shared flashed before your eyes like a string of reminders of a life and love lost. It felt as if there was no air for you to breathe, you weren’t even sure how long it had been since you managed to take a full breath. Your mind was running in circles, trying to grasp what had just occurred, replaying the scene over and over again until you were not even sure what reality you were in. With a hammering heart and a split soul, you were kneeling on the dock, just minutes after watching your first love take his own life. You could not even remember how you had gotten out here in the first place, you just wished that you would have stayed behind as all your friends rushed toward a disaster in waiting. Perhaps that would have spared you some of the heartbreak, spared you from hearing him scream that he loved you one last time, spared you from seeing his boat go up in flames. But no, you were sure that for as long as you lived, you would see that blazing inferno whenever you closed your eyes.
There were arms around you, an attempt to soothe your shaking body, it only made you feel more trapped in a memory you would never escape. Those arms lifted you up and suddenly you were walking, mixed in all the anger and sadness there was a surprise that your body was even able to function. It felt as if you were outside of your body watching everything occur, you watched as Kiara and JJ helped you sit down on a sofa and as they draped a blanket over your shoulders. You watched it unfold, but you couldn’t feel it and there was no way that you would be able to respond to their worried questions. Instead, you were stuck in a mind that replayed everything Rafe had ever said or done to you as if that somehow could manifest him back to life. That stuck-up boy with the golden hair had been your first boyfriend, complicated as the relationship may have been, it had been the first time you ever experienced something close to love. Just days ago you had stood before him, tears in your eyes and heart in your throat as you called the relationship off. For a very long time, he had not been the boy you fell for, but rather a ghost of who he once was. Where he had once been sweet and tender with you, there had only been cold stares and words sharp enough to cut through ice. You were not oblivious to the fact that he struggled with issues you could never comprehend, but you refused to be an accomplice in his undoing. Time after time you had tried to be the person he could cling to when the world sat heavily upon his shoulders, but you soon realized that love and affection could not solve all problems. Oh, and you had loved him so much that you would have done anything for him to smile at you the way he had when he uttered those big three words for the first time. He had watched you with eyes that held so much adoration that you thought that they would never dim, that they would shine brighter for each time his eyes found yours. But eventually, they had dulled, and so you had realized that you would not sacrifice yourself no matter how much you cared for him. It did not matter that you had called things off with him or that you had decided to leave him in order to save yourself, for the knowledge that he was actually gone made it feel like someone was clawing at your heart and trying to rip it apart. It felt like no time in the world would be able to heal the pain in your chest or dry the tears falling from your eyes.
Time was indeed a funny thing, how seconds turned into minutes and how then those minutes became hours. Hours that you spent reminiscing over a life you thought you had given up before it was lost forever. You clung to the memories of him as if they were the lifebuoy keeping an anchor from pulling you down in a sea made up of your own sorrow. You knew that you were staying in your own made-up memories of a relationship with more bad times than good, but a part of you felt that you could not grieve the person he had become. For he had been vile and horrid, and if you acknowledged that, you would feel guilty for the sadness overwhelming you. So yes, you stayed in your made-up reality and wept for the boy that could have been. As hours turned into days, your friends made every effort to comfort you and try to get you out of the room that had become your place of mourning. Their tries aggravated you, for they did not understand the feelings rushing through your body at such speed it made you lightheaded. Each one of them had hated Rafe Cameron with at least one bone in their body and you knew how some of them had looked the day he died as if they were content that he was finally gone. Relieved that he could no longer plague them with taunts and threats that might have become reality was it not for his passing. You might have understood this, had it not been for the grief and guilt plaguing every bone in your body.
As days turned into weeks, you eventually came to appreciate their efforts to help you. It was like your vision was starting to clear and you could finally start trying to live your life again, and the first step to doing that was always to surround yourself with people that made you roar with laughter. Their ventures to try and find the Cross of Santo Domingo, were helpful, to say the least. Those adventures were as distracting as they were terrifying since the outcome was never given. Your mixed friend group of pogues and kooks had actually found that damn cross as well. Who would have thought that a bunch of high school kids would be able to find a historic relic? The answer would have been no one, and that is why you don’t underestimate kids with no limits. The cross had been in your grasp until a greedy and manipulative Ward Cameron came along and grabbed it. Ever since that particular happening, things started going south fast and it all ended up with Sarah being kidnapped by her own guardians. It also ended up with the rest of you stowed away like cargo on the ship she was on. While John B and Pope carried out their plan to find Sarah and the famous cross, you, JJ, and Kie sweated from every pore as you waited to hear from them. You had zoned out, staring mindlessly into one of the walls of the container, in the background you could hear your two friends talk about their dreams for the future. Something about going on several surfing trips at various destinations with each other, and that part made your heart ache. Sure, after everything he had done, a future with Rafe had not been one of your dreams. Still, as you listened to your friends talk, you could only remember a time where he had been everything you wanted in life. You pressed your palms upon your face as if you somehow could force every memory of him to remain in that little part of your brain where you were hoping they would become forgotten. A loud clank dragged you out of your thoughts and you looked up just in time to see Pope and John B climb in through that small window opening, followed by a woman you had never ever seen. Shortly after that, problems started to arise and soon all of you were scrambling out of the container in hopes of not being detected by the workers on the boat. They were in obvious search of all of you, which made you sweat even more than you had done inside the container. All of you received different plans on how to tackle the situation, yours was to act as a lookout for John B as he searched for Sarah.
You followed him down to what you could only assume was the boiler room since steam was thick in the air and you took your place by the door as he ventured further down. His desperate cries for Sarah echoed through the room and you dearly wished for a response to be heard, but there was nothing except the sound of his shoes against the floor. Thump, thump, thump and then utter silence until John B utters a name that made it feel as if the floor was pulled away from under your feet.
“Rafe.”
One of your hands finds the doorframe, a poor attempt to steady yourself as you try to figure out if this is a trick played by your grieving mind. You take a few breaths and as the silence is once again interrupted by two raised voices, you follow John B’s path down into the room. The heart in your chest is beating so hard that it feels like you are going to throw up, and it only gets worse the nearer you come. At first, you only see your friend, but then you look past him
and
your
heart
stops.
Rafe Cameron had died in front of your very eyes, so either the gods were playing a nasty cruel joke or you had lost the battle with your mind. You shut your eyes just to open them again, and no matter how many times you did it, he still remained. What happened next was a bit peculiar to you, for weeks you had drowned in grief where sadness was the constant emotion, but as you looked him in the eye and saw that he was very much alive, rage and anger crushed into you with the force of a thousand waves. You stepped toward him, only for an arm to shoot out to stop you, and John B added to his gesture by saying “Don’t”. Laughter bubbled in your throat, for who was he to tell you what you could or could not say to your “dead” ex-boyfriend who seemed to never stop causing you grief.
“Find Sarah.” John B hesitated for a few moments before following your unspoken order to leave you and Rafe alone. It wasn’t surprising considering that his worry for Sarah would always overpower anything else. Once again you looked into Rafe’s blue eyes, remembering a time when you used to stare in them for so long you would see specks of green and grey. Had you searched for those colors now, you would probably have found them. However, you were trying to decipher whatever feeling that was shining in them, was it anger? No, his other features were too soft for that and the hand holding his weapon had gone slack as he watched you. Maybe it was relief? No that was not it either, for why would he be relieved to see you? You were not the one who had died and left the other behind. You stepped even closer to him, the simmering anger inside of your veins made your hands shake and he looked at them briefly as if he wanted to take them in his. Your hands clenched into fists and you watched as his shoulders dropped the tiniest bit, and suddenly you knew exactly what was shining in his eyes.
Love, and sadness. Your heart started to speed up again, and you knew that once you opened your mouth, the anger and grief that had become part of you, would tumble out in words that you would never be able to take back. But he had done something much worse, so he would listen, you would make sure of it. Your lips parted slightly and he must have seen it for his words came first.
“I- fuck I am sorry okay? But I had to do it, you wouldn’t understand but I had to do it, it was the best for everyone.” As he says this you can’t help the sound that slips through your lips, it was supposed to be a laugh but it sounds more like a sob. His eyes flicker between you and everything else in the room as if there was anything in here that could save him for this conversation. You move your hands toward your chest and his eyes watch as you press them hard against your chest, against the heart that won’t stop breaking.
“Best for everyone?” Your voice is the combination of a whisper and a ragged breath “Did you have my best interest in mind when you let me believe you had blown yourself up?” He winces and makes an attempt to say something but you hold up a hand to stop him. “Did it ever occur to you how your little stunt would affect the one person who still, despite everything, loved you?” This time, your voice has started to rise towards something like a scream, and how could you not scream when there is so much sadness inside of you that it felt like just looking at him would turn your body into a pool of water.
“You broke up with me, so don’t start acting like a victim where you aren’t one.” His features are starting to morph into those he carries when anger overcomes him, but you will not back away from this. Your hands are in your hair, pulling at it as if that would help you make sense of this situation. “You broke my heart long before I broke yours.” You can’t help the way your voice breaks or the tears that start falling from your eyes.“You needed and still need help and until you receive that help, you are prone to hurt anyone in your vicinity.” Now it is his turn to drag his hands through his hair and his breaths come faster and faster until you realize that he is starting to hyperventilate. He sinks to the floor and you follow, not sure how to help when it feels like his state is mirroring your own. With cautious movements, you place your hands on his shoulders, and the shaking of his body sends trembles throughout yours. For a while nothing happens, you just sit there with your hands on his body and watch him fall apart. Perhaps you should have been glad that he was suffering, after everything he had done to you he deserved it. But you couldn’t feel anything other than anguish and as a sob escaped his body every restraint you had kept on yourself broke and you hugged him towards your chest. You could never save him, but he clung to you as if you had the power to undo every wrong he had ever done. After a while, he looks up at your tear-streaked face and one of his hands reaches up to cup it. You want to look away because you can see everything in those eyes of his, every regret and every wish he has ever had. His forehead leans towards you and you feel his hot breath against your skin. As you breathe in the scent of cologne and feel his skin against yours, you feel overwhelmed by the fact that he is actually here. You notice that his lips part and for a second you are scared that he is going to kiss you, but he must know that there is a limit to your patience with him so he just whispers words with the promise of what could have been. “I wanted to be good for you.” A small smile takes place on your lips and you close your eyes as you try to restrain the well of emotions inside of you. “I know Rafe, I know.” He breathes out a little, almost as if he is relieved that you are aware that he tried in a world and with a mind constantly working against him. You knew, but you also knew that there was someone else out there for you. Someone who would love you in a way that Rafe would never be able to, in a way that would not send the two of you to the bottom of the ocean. Whoever was out there would make you swim. For so long you had wanted to believe that Rafe was the one, despite all his flaws you would have given anything for him to be your future. It was a relief to know that you could and deserved to have more. But you also knew that you needed to do something before that could happen.
“I will stay-.” Before you could even finish your sentence he whipped his head up to look at you with such hope you never wanted to continue talking. You swallowed hard and forced yourself to go on. “I will stay with you just to make sure you receive the help you need.” His whole body deflated and you had to bite your lip in order not to cry again. Eventually, he nodded and you closed your eyes in relief. You knew that this had to be the right move, no one else would listen to him or make sure he got help, so you needed to be the one to did. Just enough so that you finally could start swimming towards the surface.

Mhhhhhh 19, 25 and 43 for the ask meme? :D
ty finn! ^^
19. Introduce an OC that means a lot to you (and explain why)
oogh there's so many...who to talk about.....i think i'll go with joel from a tough of magic (story 1). he's a striker on his university's football team, but he's also studying music.
i've got a big soft spot for him because he's just so....good, at the end of the day. he doesn't want to hurt anyone, he wants to have fun nd for the people around him to have fun. its just that he's a huge pushover, and in trying to make everyone happy, the minority is likely going to get hurt (including himself). most of his friends suck nd the environment is rife with toxic masculinity, and its something he has to learn how to step away from. i've also had him as an oc since like...oogh, 2012??
25. The OC that resembles you the most (same hobby, height, shared like/dislike for something etc?)
[laughs in splinters off parts of myself to various different ocs over and over] hmm....MOST like me??? well, luke (a touch of magic story 4) was always kinda who i wanted to be, hence stealing his name, but i never did get around to his hobbies. kai has a lot of my interests, but he's much more musically inclined...miles has my hair (when it gets long) and nose..
i'm not too sure, each one that is similar has something that sets them apart...probably one of the lukes, just bc well, name, turquoise hair, etc fkjdsdngkjkjngdkds
43. Do you have any certain type when you create your OCs? Do you tend to favour some certain traits or looks? It’s time to confess
gdkjgnkjdskgd absolutely, turquoise hair, freckles, some kind of space or plant motif, some kind of poncho/cloak >:]

I feel like I’ve always straddled two worlds... some form of my Work Lady persona (the first way to act that I was trained in; it’s very Model Minority) vs the world I found I could be *me* in which at various times has been in alt-culture space or old school weird nerd space For a long time, identifying as gay was a way I could straddle the worlds because I could perform a much more casual/toned down version of Work Lady. Straight women in progressive environments absolutely stopped policing anything about me and just chalked my oddness up to my being a butch lesbian. I got absolutely nowhere in the more normie parts of LGBT culture and my friends in LGBT culture always ended up the ND genderqueer/trans proto-furries and when I was working in tech in the 90s, I had to keep my worlds sooooo separate because despite all of these trans women in tech we talk about now... I certainly wasn’t where *they* were, oh how that would have been great if I had been. As a suburban person in a hetero relationship, sometimes I have no idea who I’m supposed to be in public anymore, like, the degree to which I bought myself space as an ND person by moving among mixed LGBT people (because gender is the biggest axis along which my normalcy is policed) is... absolutely non-negligible. Another thing is that I had to actually be out with my identity to buy this space for myself and... if you’re in a monogamous relationship (and don’t want it to be otherwise) at what point is it appropriate to yell out your real identity? At some point it becomes oversharing about your past relationships, if you’re not actually looking for a hookup. Is this a situation where a bi/pan and or non binary enamel pin on my messenger bag, in nerdy/gaming spaces, is about the right level of display? Like, just so they know the person playing specific characters and writing specific stories is the right identity to do those things? Like, I’m a VERY private person...
The other thing is that it doesn’t feel like this is even possible anymore, using my identity as protective shielding, because of the degree of normie policing *within LGBT culture now.* Like, it’s a lot harder to move in nerdy and LGBT spaces than it was, those are not even my safe spaces anymore.

Tell us more about your oc!! Do they have a wild backstory like the other survivors 👀
YEA lmao she does! her backstory is below the cut cos it's soo long but some fun facts about her:
she pretended to know how to use a gun for like the first bunch of weeks on the island so she could come along on the adventures into the jungle and when the occasion arose that she actually had to shoot she made a silly fool of herself
she vaguely knew desmond pre-island through theatre stuff but can't remember his name and he can't remember hers so when they see each other for the first time they just look at each other like :| trying to remember
shes a locke rights activist because she is a teensy bit delusional (medically) nd she believes in divine paths and everything and also she father figured him early on and can't unfatherfigure him BUT she has a mad rivalry with boone because she called him out whenever he said something cruel to shannon so season one is just locke going through the jungle like this :) and her and boone following him glaring at each other like this >:|
gets left out of soo much of the plot because she will not shut up and can't keep a secret. 3 people will have died and 5 major plot points happen and she is oblivious. like in later seasons that changes she sticks along for more stuff but in season 2?? season 3?? girl she has no idea
i love her <3
she grew up in dublin w/ her mum and dad mostly hanging about at her mum's tiny lebanese restaurant. her mum and dad split when she was 12 & they basically let her pick who she wanted to stay with. she picked her dad because he was the more 'fun' parent but he was one of those dads who would make a really cool friend but a really bad dad. they moved to london and he did sound engineering for loads of underground shows in scummy venues and mo just sort of hung around. got into drugs & alcohol at a pretty young age and even played drums in a really shitty and short-lived band for a bit. this is the origin of her silly little wig because she wore it as part of her stage get up and then just liked it as a fashion statement later.
she tried uni for a year and a half (by this point she and her dad barely talked) and got really into theatre where she became an acquaintance of desmond (who did sets for uni productions before doing sets for rsc) but they never got close. then her grades were too shit to keep doing school and she hopped down to first NZ then australia so they'd have a hard time tracking her down to make her pay her school bills lmaooo. when she moved she changed her name and started going by mo.
she found various and silly ways to make money in australia including but not limited to: sinead o'connor tribute act in pubs, tour guide, very brief stint as an aquarium janitor, fast food cook, and so on. also it feels worth mentioning that she never got a drivers' license and she literally uses her fake ID she got when she was underage as her drivers' license. but she only speeds when no one's looking so no one has pulled her over.
over the few years she's there she basically comes to terms with the fact that she needs to go see her mom again and apologise for not trying to keep in touch at all. like she didn't answer any of her mum's calls or write any letters back since she left. because as a kid she had a really rough relationship w/ her mum which is why she left but it was genuinely not her mum's fault and it took her 10 years to realise that and come around to the fact she has to try and reach out and make things right.
she went through all this to track her mum down without actually reaching out at all and found she had moved to the US and went to school to become an anesthesiologist and was working at a hospital in LA. then she got wet feet about reaching out because she is a coward.
in a pub in sydney right she has a drunken talk w/ another woman at the bar - ana lucia - who was going to try and rebuild a relationship with HER mum and was learning to accept help/love from her mum and mo went huh. yeah i need to go do this. and she buys a ticket, ends up on the same flight as ana lucia, and the rest is history
if u wanna know more about her on-island life lmk!! i love talking about her and i have not said anything about her for so long omg
#mo rufus#THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ASKING ABOUT HERRRR AUAOUH#she is just my silly little blorbo. to coin a phrase.#lost show#asks#anon

*Round 5. THE SUPER 8*
Now it was starting to get serious, this was now the Super 8 and this was the first time this season that 2 people were gonna get eliminated. I took a deep breath and gave a silent prayer to God and Freddie above to give me strength.
“And here to give us yet another star-stellar performance and another few hints as to who this mega star could be under the mask. Here’s the Lioness.”
The LIONESS; CLUE PACKAGE
“What very few people don’t know about me is that I didn’t always have that good of a homelife as a child.” I said as I walked through a child’s room. I took hold of my stuffed lion and hugged him tightly as I continued, “The people who raised me were well—let’s just say they weren’t the nicest of people. The remainder of my childhood into adolescence was toxic for me.”
“Oh my god.” Nicole muttered sympathetically.
“Growing up with that much toxicity it really damaged my self-esteem. No matter how hard I tried, it just wasn’t enough for them.”
“Growing up in an abusive home.” Robin noted. “Wonder if she’s an advocate for domestic abuse?”
“But I knew I couldn’t let myself be buried underneath all that hatred. It took a long, long, long, long time. But I forgave them. Because in a way without them, I wouldn’t have found this inner strength within me.”
“You go Lioness.” Cheered Jenny.
“That’s why for this performance, if you or a loved one is dealing with toxic family members or partners. There’s no shame in admitting they’re in the wrong. Because if you continue to listen to their toxic lies, it’ll only lead you down one way. And you’re too good to leave this world just yet.” I set the stuffed lion down and punched the wall which shattered as I let out a proud roar.
I stood there on stage with the mic on hand as my girl Pink’s “Beautiful trauma” came on and I began singing in a ballad like tone first. Slowly walking across the stage till I came upon a beautifully decorated swing (much like the Black Swan used a couple rounds ago).
*Me*
We were on fire I slashed your tires It's like we burned so bright we burned out I made you chase me I wasn't that friendly My love, my drug, we burn out
Oh
I got on the swing and it slowly raised up, lifting me all the way high above the audience as I sang the 2nd chorus. As the mantra part of the chorus came up, silk extended from the ends of the swing and I slowly swung back and forth making the silks dance gracefully in the wind. When the bridge came up, I turned on my semi-good rapping skills. As I rapped out the bridge, the swing lowered me down towards the catwalk that stood in front of the judges.
Once my feet touched the ground and I sung the last verse, I walked towards the judges and sung before each of them.
*Me*
The pill I keep taking The nightmare I'm waking There's nothing, no nothing, nothing but you My perfect rock bottom Beautiful trauma My love (my love), my love, my drug, oh
My love, my love, my love, my drug, oh My love, my love, my love, my drug, oh My love, my love, my love, my drug, oh My love, my love, my drug.
Mmm tough times they keep coming All night laughing and knackered Some days like I'm barely breathing Then after we were high and the love dope died, it was you
The pill I keep taking The nightmare I'm waking There's nothing, no nothing, nothing but you My perfect rock bottom My beautiful trauma My love, my love, my drug, oh
After walking back on stage with Nick standing at my side, he congratulated me on another amazing performance.
“The Lioness is pulling our heartstrings once again.”
“I agree Nick. Especially after hearing that story of her going through domestic abuse that—that’s never an easy thing to go through. But Lioness let me just say you are a strong woman underneath. Because I can tell you’ve overcome that trauma and made a name for yourself.” Nicole told me.
I pounded my heart and raised my hand towards her. She gave me a heart back.
“Now we raided through your fridge and found out just what exactly the Lioness loves to eat.”
“Oh come on Nick this is easy! She eats meat!” Ken exclaimed.
“Sit your butt down Ken!” Nick exclaimed. “Men in Black, bring out the Lioness’s favorite meal.” One of them came pulling out a cooler and sat it right beside Nick and he said. “Alright, let’s see what we’ve got in here.” There was a drumroll before he opened it to reveal a thermos that read JASMINE TEA.
“What’s that say on the thermos?” asked Jenny.
“Jasmine tea.”
“But there’s no food there!” complained Ken.
“To answer your Question Kenneth.” I scolded. That got the rest of the panel as well as Nick laughing. “Any type of food is good for me, but it’s this tea that will give you a clue. As to who I am.”
The audience and Nick ooed. Jenny’s mouth opened widely as she rapidly pounded her stack of notes.
“Jenny it looks like you’ve got something.”
“I do! I do! I do! I do! I do! Okay so in the clue package she talked about her abusive childhood. Rough upbringing, but she didn’t say parents were the ones doing it. And the number code that was given to us awhile back, that 149121. I have been running through my head various codes as to what that could mean. Until the TEA is what gave me the idea.”
“Who is it?!” Ken demanded.
“At least she’s making more sense than you do Ken!” Robin dissed.
“Okay the code actually stands for 11-24-91. And this Rockstar has a tattoo of it on her shoulder with Angel Wings to remember her friend and mentor Freddie Mercury. This is most definitely the ROCK ANGEL (Y/N) KLINE!!!”
“Oh yeah that’s right. She does have a tattoo with that date on it.” Robin agreed with her.
“Nah I’m gonna disagree with you on that Jenny.” Ken said. Oh boy here we go. “Now going off based off the clue package we saw domestic abuse. And on the number code the first few numbers I picked out were 911. This actress started in a movie known as “The Call”. Welcome to the Masked Singer Halle Berry!”
I shook my head and crossed my arms at him.
“Look at her she’s agreeing with me.”
“Ken this is not Halle Berry!” Nick Cannon said. I then waved bye to Nick as I proceeded to walk off the stage but he told me to come back, so I had no choice but to stand there. “See Ken you made the Lioness upset just like you did with Nick Carter last season.”
“Hey like I said before then. This isn’t the first time someone’s walked away from my guesses, and it won’t be the last.”
“I think I might have an idea on who it might be.” Nicole piped in.
“Go head Nicole.”
“Okay so we saw the domestic abuse, growing up in an abusive home. But I also remember from a few weeks back there was a sign that said AIDS. So I’m thinking she’s also an advocate for AIDS/HIV awareness. I’m gonna put my money on Rihanna.”
Oh wow that’s impressive. But sadly she’s wrong. Although I have helped Rihanna with some of her AIDS awareness promotion when the two of us were at a party together for MTV. She told me she wanted to start a campaign for it but had no idea where to begin with it. So I gave her some of my well known contacts and gave her some business advice that I remember learning from Deacy on how to handle everything.
“That’s not a bad guess. But Rihanna’s got a different voice. But whoever you are, you wowed us once again Lioness.” I bowed and blew them a kiss as Nick told me that I could head backstage.
“The judges are slowly but surely getting a grip with my identity. But I’m not ready to go home just yet. And if I somehow make it through, I’ll give them a performance that’ll definitely throw them off my scent.”
Thankfully, I was safe from being unmasked in this double elimination, however Seashell and the Yeti weren’t as lucky.
*Round 6. THE SPICY 6*
It’s down to the wire now. This song might just make me or break me, especially since it’s the hardest song I’ll ever do in my entire singing career. But like Freddie and I always say, “It’s go big or go home darling.” Plus this is another special performance that I’m dedicating to.
“Now then we actually got to sit down and actually talk with this Megastar. Here’s what we managed to find out about the Lioness.”
THE LIONESS CLUE PACKAGE AND INTERVIEW.
This clue package showed me getting my mask taken off but I still had a black face cover hiding my entire face.
“Oh yes that feels so much better.” I praised at feeling the cool air on my face. The Producer then asked me.
“So how has it been being the Lioness so far?”
“A lot of fun. She’s given me the courage to do things I never thought I could do before.” The screens would show some of my previous performances from getting on a wrecking ball to being lifted well over 10ft above an audience.
“What would winning the Masked Singer mean for you?”
“Well I’m not just doing it for myself. But for my pride as well. Especially my dad.”
“You’re dad?” I nodded. The screens would then show me walking around my den with a picture of me and a shadow figure of a male lion.
“Not related by blood but he’s been my father figure for as long as I’ve known him. In fact without his love, I never would’ve found true love on my own. My husband, my kids, even my grandkids. They wouldn’t have existed had he not given me the love that I was denied growing up.” I stroked the picture of the shadow figure of the lion beside me. The screen also showed my real family with my husband lion, 4 adult kids and 2 young grandkid cubs.
I pressed the frame up to my mouth and gave it a kiss, the screen even made a kiss sound effect as little hearts danced around it.
“So Papa Lion, this song is for you. I love you so much and thank you for everything you’ve done for me.” I blew a kiss to the camera as my clue package and interview ended.
The ballad opening for “I don’t wanna miss a thing” by Aerosmith came on and I took a deep breath. This was it, but you’re doing it for Roger here (n/n). Even though he won’t know it, this song is for him. I opened my mouth and soon began singing.
Once the bridge came around and the most difficult part of the song came on, I unleashed every ounce of alto rawness I had within me and just belted out that last yeah which made fireworks rain down from the ceiling and the audience seemed to enjoy it.
*Me*
I could stay awake just to hear you breathing Watch you smile while you are sleeping While you're far away and dreaming
I could spend my life in this sweet surrender I could stay lost in this moment forever Cause moment spent with you is a moment I treasure
Don't want to close my eyes I don't want to fall asleep 'Cause I'd miss you, babe And I don't want to miss a thing
'Cause even when I dream of you The sweetest dream will never do I'd still miss you, babe And I don't want to miss a thing
And I don't want to miss one smile I don't want to miss one kiss
And just stay here in this moment For all of the rest of time Yeah, yeah, yeah!
Don't want to close my eyes Don't want to fall asleep 'Cause I'd miss you, babe And I don't want to miss a thing
After finishing the song, fireworks came up behind me as I punched my fist into the air and panted from within my mask.
“Oh my god where did that come from!?” exclaimed Jenny.
“The lioness taking us to the far reaches of outer space with Armageddon!” Nick proclaimed as he came up beside me.
“I wanna say something first Lioness. That was probably your best performance ever.” Robin told me. Oh my god seriously? I knew I had cracked up on that last ‘yeah’ but to hear him say this was my best performance surprised me. “You really laid it out on the line tonight with probably the hardest song but you executed it phenomenally.” He praised.
I bowed my hands in gesture to him telling him I wasn’t worthy.
“Alright now let’s see just who amongst our panel is the Lioness connected to.” The judges all looked up and soon my chute came down towards Ken but Nicole intercepted it from him and she said.
“Oh it’s for Jenny.” She passed it to Ken who passed it to Jenny and she saw the silver charm of a birthday cake.
“A birthday cake.” She told the crowd as she held the charm between her fingers.
“Jenny. I wanna thank your husband for performing at one of my kid’s birthday party.” At that the crowd got all suspicious and Jenny’s face was gaped wide in shock.
“Is Donny doing things behind your back?” Nicole accused Jenny.
“I hope not.” God these innuendos kill me. “Okay so apparently you know my husband Donny. But I-I don’t remember him ever telling me he performed at a kid’s birthday party.”
“What about the entire New Kids on the Block?” asked Robin.
“Possibly. Was it just my husband or the entire band that performed at your kid’s party?”
“You know she can’t answer that!” Nick snapped playfully.
“I’m sorry but I gotta know!”
“Alright panel. What’s this clue package doin for you?”
“Okay well in the clue package there was the picture of her family. I saw four grown kids and 2 grandkids. If she really is a grandma then I still gotta go with Rock Angel. Because her daughter Kelly just recently gave birth to a baby girl last year during the pandemic doing an at home birth.” Nicole said.
“Yeah and in the clue package she spoke about a father figure. And I read somewhere that she considers Roger Taylor from Queen her dad.”
“Okay, okay panel.” Damn they are starting to see it now. But I hope this performance keeps me in the game. “Well, all we know is was that was yet another killer performance. Make some noise for the Lioness. Go ahead and head on backstage.”
The judges really are seeming to close in on me. I really don’t wanna go home at this point but if I do then it is what it is. I still had a lot of fun doing this show and it was an amazing ride.
But at the votes, I was surprised to see that it wasn’t me that was going home. But the Russian Dolls, after doing Elton John’s song “I’m still standing”. I thought they did a hell of a lot better than me but I guess it’s not always the voices that count, but how you execute the performance.
Now it was onto the Semi-finals.
*SEMI-FINALS*
I’ve come too far to end this journey now. The Semi-finals is the last step to ensure that I can secure my spot in the finals. And I have just the song to get me there.
“Week after week she has astounded us with pure, unadulterated vocals. But can she claim her spot for the finals. Let’s dig up some more clues on……the Lioness.”
THE LIONESS; CLUE PACKAGE:
“Being in this competition has taught me a lot about myself. On one side there’s the Lioness I present before the media, when I preform or out in the public. Then there’s the Lioness I am around my pride. A mother, a daughter, a grandmother. And I think that’s really the best job compared to my career.”
“She’s definitely a family woman.” Jenny stated as she took down some notes.
“I wouldn’t be anywhere without my family. They are my rock. Even those that had left me I still see them throughout my life.” I stood before a funhouse mirror maze and saw various shadows surrounding me. “And it’s their voices that give me the courage to continue the fight. So for this performance I’m gonna pull out all the stops and just allow you all to see the real me. Nothing but my raw vocals. I’ve fought to hard and I’m just not ready to go home yet.”
The stage screens were lit up with a rain animation as well as rippling water. I stood there alone with the mic and the spotlight down on me as I sung the song that was once offered to me for the Original movie, but I recommended the Producers to Christina to do the song.
As the song grew more fiercer with the soft drumbeats and my voice became more powerful and intense, I could feel tears filling my eyes once more. I was gonna get to the finals even if it costs me my voice.
*Me*
Look at me You may think you see Who I really am But you'll never know me Every day It's as if I play a part
Now I see If I wear a mask I can fool the world But I cannot fool my heart
Who is that girl I see
Staring straight back at me?
Why is my reflection
Someone I don’t know?
There's a heart that must be free to fly That burns with a need to know the reason why
Why must we all conceal What we think, and how we feel?
I won't pretend that I'm Someone else for all time When will my reflection show Who I am inside? When will my reflection show Who I am inside?
At that last belt which I held longer than I ever held a note before. A 9 full seconds which made the crowd go berserk. I could see some people wiping their tears away as I sung the last couple of notes before finally ending it with a bow of my head.
“Heartfelt! Lioness once again pulling our heartstrings.”
“Okay I just need to say this Nick.” Ken said.
“Go ahead Kenneth.”
“Throughout this entire competition especially when it comes to the Semi-finals, it all comes down to who wants it most. And Lioness—” he wiped his tears away. “You didn’t just show us that you wanted a spot in the finals. You proved you’re worthy of the Rock Gods!”
Aww Dr. Ken. I blew him a kiss and patted my heart and he blew me multiple kisses back.
“For once I agree with Ken.” Robin said. “If people didn’t get teary eyed when you performed Whitney Houston’s hit song, they’re definitely not dry eyed by now.” The 2 women nodded in agreement.
“I agree with the guys. I grew up listening to this song. And to hear your voice do this song, not only did you just sing it. You felt it. And when a singer feels a song, it makes it that much more powerful.” Nicole added. I nodded and replied to her.
“Agreed Nicole. This song……it really spoke out to me when I first heard it. And…..during a really, really rough time in my life. It—got me through so much.” I spoke through my choked tears. Knowing the judges could sense that I was crying underneath the mask, they all awed at me as Nick rubbed my back.
“Lioness even getting emotional up here. Panel, any guesses as to who she might be?”
“All I can say and have been saying is that this is a true, professional performer. And just that belt alone showed us what you’ve got. A true fire within you. Now I know that I’ve said the Rock Angel a couple of rounds but just this week alone hearing the voice, I wanna say this is Christina Aguilera.” Jenny said.
“But wouldn’t it be risky for her to do her own song?” Robin asked.
“She could’ve disguised her tone in order to sing it. But that recognizable control of the belt has to be her.” Jenny reasoned with him.
“I don’t think so Jenny. Cause in the clue package she says she’s a grandmother and Christina ain’t no grandmother yet. I’m still gonna say this is the Rock Angel.” Nicole said.
“Alright well, another heartfelt performance. Give it up one last time for the Lioness.” I waved to the audience and blew kisses at them before exiting the stage.
By the end of the round (and finding out the identity of the infamous Cluedle-Doo being none other than Jenny’s husband Donnie Wahlberg) it was time to see just who was gonna get eliminated and find out who was going into the finals. I stood there with my hands in a prayer as I mouthed out a prayer before Nick finally said the contestant going home.
“The Black Swan!” oh no! She’s actually been my favorite singer in our group. Hell she and I were the only ladies representing Group B and now it was up to me. “So congrats to the Piglet, Chameleon and Lioness, we will see you three in the finals.” I walked up towards Black Swan and gave her a hug and she hugged me back. “Aww look at that, Lioness giving Black Swan a hug. Seems we’ve got a friendship up here.”
I patted the side of her face before bopping her beak and finally left behind Chameleon. Well it was up to me now, could I secure another female winner for the Masked Singer? Or be runner up? Only fate and the superfans will determine that.
*?????? POV*
I was reading the paper as per my morning routine. Nothing new except this whole COVID talk and false expectations on the vaccine delivery. The world really has gone to shit hasn’t it these past few years? That’s when I got a ding on my phone from my daughter Laura. I unlocked it and read her text with a link to a video.
Dad, is this who I think it is?
Video: MASKED SINGER THE LIONESS
I think I might’ve heard of this show. Yeah it started off in America and after it’s popularity, various of other countries began it. Here in the UK we just completed season 2, so this must be the American version. I’ll admit the costume on the thumbnail looked beautiful and the detail was astounding.
I clicked on the video and it read THE MASKED SINGER S.5 SEMI-FINALS LIONESS.
The lights were dimmed and the second she opened her mouth to sing, my heart skipped a beat and I went frozen in my chair. Quick as I could I turned on our smart TV and opened up the YOUTUBE app on the TV and impatiently waited for it to open up.
“My love?” Veronica’s voice spoke as she came down.
“I’m fine dear!” I told her as the app finally uploaded. I went over to the mic icon and pressed down on it and spoke into the remote. “The Lioness Masked singer.”
Soon enough various videos popped up and soon the video that Laura sent me was the first option. I clicked on it and of course bloody ads had to come up. “Oh for god’s sake!” I sat down on my chair as the video finally played and I could hear the rest of the song.
“Reflection” by Christina Aguilera. This version was the recently updated one for the live action remake but just hearing this voice alone I knew only one person who could sing like that.
It had been decades since we last saw one another, shortly after 9-11 to be exact. But even though I’m no longer involved with the music business anymore, I’d always ask Brian or Rog to keep an eye on her and tell me everything about her.
And now seeing her perform as this Lioness creature for such a show, they didn’t know just how lucky they were to be in her presence. As the song got more powerful, I could feel these old bones of mine feeling warm and secure, tears filled my eyes and at that last belt, goosebumps came all over my body and a shiver ran up my spine.
There was a slight tremble in her voice as she ended the song. I knew it was because she was crying underneath that mask but as always she holds out strong and finished the song as beautiful as ever.
The audience roared with applause bringing back some memories of when she went on tour with us. Only her and one other person could get a crowd to sound just like that.
“She’s gotten stronger with her vocals.” My wife’s voice spoke from behind me.
“She was taught by the best. And she now coaches the best.” Ronnie took her place by my side, placing her hand on top of mine.
“You really should give her a ring sometime. I’m sure she’d love to hear from you.” I turned away from her. “You can’t have the boys and me be your messengers forever. I know for a fact she’d be happy to hear your voice again.” I sighed deeply. “At least think about it my love.”
“I will.” I placed my hand on top of hers and gave her a light peck on the cheek.
“Are there any more performances of her on this show? Luke says she’s been all over the media being the Lioness.”
“Well that was the Semi-finals performance, let’s see if someone collab all of her performances together.” I went back to the search box and soon found about a half hours’ worth of (Y/n)’s performances. I clicked play and soon her 1st performance came up.
Seeing her dance reminded me of our times on the dance floor back in the day. She was the only person able to keep up with my crazy dance moves, and that’s why she was always the perfect dance partner. Even Ronnie agreed to that statement.
“That girl never changes. She’s still got it even after all these years.” Ronnie smiled.
“That she does love, that she does.” God she has grown so much since the last time we parted. Her voice much more mature and able to do things she never did before. And some of the stuff that she’s doing on this show is bonkers.
Never did I think I’d see her on a makeshift wrecking ball or be lifted high above the stage on a swing with silk ropes dangling down from it.
I hope she takes the gold and win this little show of hers because she rightfully deserves it.
*FINALE*
It is time. Do or die now. It was me vs. Piglet vs. Chameleon. After performing a beautiful, angelic performance with last season’s winner LeAnn Rimes, the finals were finally ready to start.
After a couple months of going from 14 down to 3, it all came down to this moment right here, to determine who was gonna be this season’s Masked Singer champion. Chameleon went first and then I was going to be next. Chameleon had stuck to his rapping but I could hear more singing out of him this time around and he actually had a pretty good voice.
“Up next. She’s been putting us through a roller coaster of emotions. From hard rock to ballad. Here is the last performance and your last chance to guess at who is beneath, the Lioness.”
FINAL CLUE PACKAGE.
I was walking through a tunnel slowly. One foot in front of the other.
“Being on the Masked Singer has really been a lot of fun. When I first came on here, never did I think I was gonna make it this far.” The screen would show highlights of all my previous performances along with some additional clues.
Like a familiar band logo at the corner and season 3’s champion Night Angel’s wings. And the year 1981.
“This song was written by a very dear friend of mine. A friend that was taken from us far too soon. But it’s through this song that win or lose, I’ll always take with me till the day I die. Because no matter what, we will always make it through the tough times, especially with what we’re going through now with the Pandemic.”
The stage was dark except for a few lights as the familiar tune of Freddie’s last song he ever performed in the studio came on. I was having brief flashbacks of that day in the studio seeing him record this very song but I had to get my mind right as I sung the first verse.
Once the chorus kicked in, fire exploded from behind the stage as my rock and roll band came back on once more. The stage was mine to command one last time as I walked across it for the chorus, giving it my all, just like Freddie did.
By the time the bridge came on, my voice was starting to tremble but I kept my emotions under control till the end of the song. When I got around towards the end of the song, I would hold out a few of the notes till I finally belted out the last note much like Freddie did on the record.
And I swear it was like I could hear him singing alongside me, guiding me to hold the note out longer.
*Me*
Empty spaces, what are we living for? Abandoned places, I guess we know the score, on and on Does anybody know what we are looking for? Another hero, another mindless crime Behind the curtain, in the pantomime Hold the line Does anybody want to take it anymore?
The show must go on The show must go on, yeah Inside my heart is breaking My makeup may be flaking But my smile, still, stays on
My soul is painted like the wings of butterflies Fairy tales of yesterday, grow but never die I can fly, my friends
The show must go on
Yeah, yeah! The show must go on
Oh yeah! Yeah! I'll face it with a grin I'm never giving in On with the show
I'll top the bill I'll overkill I have to find the will to carry on. On with the show. Show. The show must go on.
As the song ended, fireworks fell down from the roof and fire and smoke exploded from the side of the stage as I panted heavily with my arms extended outward. With the last struck of the drums and guitar, I punched my fist into the air.
I sent a quick kiss to the Heavens as the audience went insane. I saw all five judges on their feet applauding me.
“The Rock and roll Lioness showin us that the Show must always go on.” Nick praised.
“I swear each and every performance you do, it just gets better and better! You could just be this season’s winner.” Jenny told me. I clenched my hands and did a victory gesture with them, I could only hope I’d win but it’s not up to me.
“I would agree. She just keeps escalating and escalating her performances and I’m just in awe whether it’s her rocking out or pulling our heartstrings with her raw voice.” Nicole said. Even last year’s winner LeAnne said.
“Hearing this voice alone makes me feel like I’m looking at a champion singer here.” I placed my hand over my heart in thanks.
The judges then proceeded to do some more guesses, Robin and Nicole were saying that I was the Rock Angel while Jenny was saying that I could be Christina Aguilera and of course Dr. Ken (out of the blue) decided that I was Beyonce.
“So tell us Lioness, what would it mean to you to win this competition?” Nick asked me.
“Well Nick, winning would mean that I’ve given my fans a whole new side of me that they’ve never seen before. But even if I don’t win, I still had a blast being here.”
“We were happy to have you here. Give it up one more time for the Lioness everybody!” I waved to the audience and walked backstage.
“This whole experience has been a wild ride. But I had a lot of fun, win or lose.” I told the camera with the Men in Black behind me.
The Piglet then did his song, “Faithfully” by Journey and man did he kill it. He definitely pulled my heartstrings with that performance. So it could be a close race between him and I, or there could be a game changer and Chameleon could take the trophy as the first rapper to sing solely Rap/Hip-hop songs.
“Tonight was a star-worthy performance, but as we know only one can take home the Masked Singer trophy. Now it’s up to our judges and Superfans at home to vote for your favorite now.” I stood between Chameleon and Piglet with my hands together in a prayer. “The votes are in. The contestant with the least amount of votes and in 3rd place is…….”
There was suspense in the air as I felt my foot shake just waiting for Nick to say which one of us got in 3rd place according to the votes of the judges as well as America.
“The Chameleon!” the audience gaped in shock. “That means Piglet and Lioness you both are safe and can head backstage before we call you both back out to crown a winner. Let’s make some noise for the Chameleon everybody!” I walked up to the Chameleon and extended my hand and we shook hands before I walked with Piglet at my tail as we both waited backstage.
About 10 minutes later, we were told to come back onto the stage to finally crown a winner of Season 5 of the Masked Singer. Piglet and I stood on opposite sides of Nick as he held in his hand, the envelope with the Winner’s name.
“Welcome back to the Masked Singer. It is now time to crown our new Season’s champion. Piglet, or Lioness. Which one of you will be taking the golden masked trophy home? The votes are in by the judges and the super fans. And the winner is……..” I could see Piglet’s legs shaking as he has made them every time throughout this entire season, while I was rubbing my hands together nervously.
Nick opened the envelope before proclaiming into his microphone.
“THE PIGLET!!” confetti soon exploded covering both me and Piglet up with strings of blue and silver confetti. Piglet stood there shocked while I clapped for him. He deserved the win, he did a great performance and a great song to close out this season with. He took the golden mask trophy and danced with it as Nick said. “Congrats again Piglet you are this season’s champion. Which means you can stand over there in the championship booth till it’s time to unmask you.”
Before Piglet left, I walked up to him and patted his shoulder before giving him a hug and he hugged me back.
“Aww Lioness is being all cuddly with our contestants here.” Piglet and I shook hands with each other for a good competition while I went back to my spot to be unmasked once and for all. “Lioness you’ve wowed us week after week and as sad as we are to see you go, I think I speak for everybody here, we cannot wait to see who you are!”
The judges all agreed as well as the audience.
“But first, let’s bring out the first Impression guesses. Men in Black! Bring ‘em out!” I could already see the judges pleading for them to not to. “Yeah it’s been like—months since you guys wrote these down.”
“Can we please not do this Nick?” pleaded Jenny.
“Too late. And the first guess is from…..Nicole.”
“Oh god.”
“You guessed……Christina Aguilera. Not a bad guess.”
“Yeah that really isn’t a bad guess. However I’m not gonna stick with that. Based off the clue package of LGBTQ, and growing up in a domestic abusive home, plus the recent clue package with the symbol of the band Queen’s logo and the Rock n Roll hall of fame right beside that. I’m gonna go with the Rock Angel (Y/n) Kline.”
“Okay. Okay. Let’s see who else we’ve got here……Robin!”
“Oh no.”
“You guessed……Pink.”
“Oh that’s not too bad.” He shrugged.
“You stickin with it?”
“I am not gonna stick with that. Like Nicole I did see the Queen logo in this week’s clue package and just going off by the voice alone. I re-listened to some old records and this is clearly the Rock Angel herself.”
“Alright 2 votes for the Rock Angel. Mrs. Jenny McCarthy.” Jenny sunk down in her chair as Nick grabbed her envelope and opened it up. “Your first impression of the Lioness was……also Pink.”
“Oh thank god I thought I had pulled a Ken guess.” She wiped her hand across her forehead as Ken exclaimed.
“Hey!”
“Ken sit down! Are you sticking with that guess.”
“No. The number code we were give, the 149121. Which I’ve coded as her tattoo for the date of Nov. 24th, 1991, the date when Freddie Mercury sadly passed away from complications from AIDS. And seeing how she talks about her family, her kids, her papa Lion. I’m going for (Y/n) Kline the Rock Angel!”
“Alright, alright, alright. Dr. Ken……” oh this outta be interesting to see who he thought I was at the first performance. He opened Ken’s envelope and laughed.
“What? What did he write!?”
“Janet Jackson!” oh my god! That even got me weak in my knees as I laughed.
“With those dance moves I thought it could be her! No one could’ve done that dance better than she could! DON’T LAUGH AT ME!!”
“Are you sticking with that guess?”
“No because the clue package doesn’t support it. Okay so we’ve had LGBTQ, domestic abuse. She’s a family woman with 4 kids and apparently 2 grandkids. Although I think the grandkids is a lie. She went through some tough times throughout her personal life. This is none other than Lady Gaga! Welcome to the Masked Singer!”
“What?!” Nicole exclaimed. “But she’s not a mom!”
“Well then she could be lying about the kids then too all I know is that the rest of my brilliant theories lead to Lady gaga!” I shook my head and placed my hands over my mask shaking my head in defeat. “See! She’s even admitting I’m right!”
“No she’s not she’s just done with how ridiculous your guess is.” Nick said.
“Well I don’t care. This is Lady Gaga and I’ll take it to my grave!”
“Alright. Ms. LeAnne. As our guest panelist you have the last say in who you think this might be.”
“First of all let me just say you are a super star whoever you are under there. If we had competed against each other last year, I would’ve been quaking in my boots.” We all laughed. “This is truly a rock legend under here with the few rare female rockstars that came with the time. And I actually got the privilege to see her perform with the band Queen one year for a birthday party. And there’s only one person that I’ve seen on stage that can sing with as much fire as you Lioness. And that is the Rock Angel herself.”
“Okay Panel. Everyone except for Ken Jong has agreed on their final guesses. Lioness! It is time for the moment we’ve all been waiting for. We wanna know—whose behind the mask. It is time for you to Take it off!”
“Take it off! Take it off! Take it off! Take it off!” everyone soon started chanting. I held my arms out in a shrug before shrugging my shoulders and finally reaching for my mask and tried to lift it off. Nick was helping me as the audience and the judges kept chanting. I could tell I was keeping them in suspense, just wait until they see it’s really me.
Finally the mask came off.
I shook my head and pulled my hair out of my face and the crowd went nuts, the judges all jumped up and cheered.
“THE ANGEL OF ROCK HERSELF! ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAMER! LADIES AND GENTLEMEN THE ONE AND ONLY (Y/N) KLINE!! THE ROCK ANGEL!!!”
“OH MY GOD!!” I heard some of the judges exclaim.
“Look how beautiful she is!” Nicole praised me. I waved to the audience and gave them a “Freddie Mercury” like bow with a twirl of my hand.
“Hello LA!” I said.
“Angel! Angel! Angel! Angel!” I heard the crowd chanting out.
“Wow it is such an honor and a privilege to be standing here next to a true Rockstar.”
“It’s an honor to be here Nick. Thank you all for having me here.” I told him.
“Tell us why did you choose to be in this show?”
“I know this answer gets told a lot but for me personally I speak from the hard truth that we should all strive to do different things cause—you never know which days are gonna be your last.” I hinted my potential death scare almost 20 years ago. The judges all nodded in understandment.
“And I’m told that you also wanted to say something about this performance in particular?”
“Yes. The song I had done wasn’t originally my choice.” The audience as well as the judges all looked at me in surprise. “Originally the Producers wanted me to do a Katy Perry song, but……this coming November will mark the 30th anniversary of the day my boys and I lost our beloved Freddie. And…….being there the day he recorded this song in only one take. I felt in my soul that I had to do this for him. To give him a grand performance because due to this covid Queen and I aren’t touring till we feel it’s safe to start touring again, like many artists are. So I really wanted to honor Freddie with a performance that I hope did him proud.”
“Well you did just that.” Jenny told me.
“Thank you. And I’m glad you managed to catch that Jenny, you truly are the Masked Singer detective.” She pointed out to me and that’s when last season’s winner LeAnne said.
“I grew up listening, to both you and Queen. And—I can say for a fact that you definitely did Freddie Mercury proud. And it’s good that you and the remaining members of Queen continue his legacy. Sure it’s not the same as it was before but you don’t refer to him just in the past. But in the present.”
“Thank you LeAnne dear.” I thanked her as I blew her a quick kiss.
“I just gotta say (Y/n). You absolutely crushed the choreography with Janet’s song for your first performance as well as your wrecking ball routine. I think those were my favorite performances of yours, will we expect any of that once you start your solo tours back up?” Nicole asked me. I laughed along with the audience.
“You never know.”
“Well it has truly been an honor to have you on our show. Now then ladies and gentlemen, to sing for us one last time give it up. For the artist formerly known as the Lioness, the Rock Angel (Y/n) Kline!” the audience applauded and I sung “The Show must go on” one final time for the audience. Putting my heart and soul into the lyrics before finally belting out that last note in a different key before punching my fist into the air and sending a kiss towards the heavens for Freddie.
After the show all ended and a few days passed by, I did a livestream on my Instagram as well as my Youtube page telling my fans that I was indeed the Lioness and just talking about my experience on the show. Of course Bri, Rog and Adam blew up my phone with calls/texts/DM’s (mostly Adam. Bri and Rog still don’t quite get DM’s) telling me why I lied and did that show in the first place.
I gave them my straight answer that I wanted to have a bit of fun and do some type of performance and show the audience a whole new side of me when it came to performing.
I was just about to go to bed after bidding Georgie goodnight (he had to work a late nightshift tonight) when my phone rang. I picked it up to see it was an unknown number from London. Curiously, I pressed the answer button and said.
“Hello?”
‘Sister dear.’ My heart stopped and I sat down on the bed.
“Brother mine?” I choked out.
‘Hey love. It’s uhh—been awhile, hadn’t it?’
“Try 20 years yah rotter.” I teased as we both softly chuckled. “What—how…..”
‘Laura sent me a video of you on the Masked Singer. The American one. You were beautiful up there.’ I placed my hand over my heart. ‘Although I do wish you had won. That—boy band person couldn’t hold a candle to you.’
“Oi now, Nick Lachey did just as well as I did.” I softly lectured him.
‘Well I still feel like you should’ve won.’ I smiled solemnly.
“Was it just because of the Masked Singer that you wanted to call me?”
‘That and…..’ he trailed off. I lay against my bed and softly spoke to him.
“Deacy?”
‘I…….’ he sighed heavily. ‘I know I haven’t been the best at keeping contact.’
“John.” For the first time since……probably back when I was an intern for Miami all the way back in the autumn of 1980, I called him by his first name (unless I referred to him him by his full name did I call him John, most of the time it was Deacy). “I get it. Plus my schedule has been quite hectic. And you—you’ve been busy yourself. After all Queen would’ve fallen decades ago without your financial brain.” We both shared another laugh.
From then one we talked pretty much the entire night up until it was almost 6am my time before we finally said our goodbyes. It was sweet to hear from him once again after so long. Now whether or not I’ll ever hear from him again, I don’t know.
But at least I know my Brother Mine is still keeping his eye out for me, in one way or another.

Time for some COOL SWORD INFORMATION! Courtesy of my brother, as most my historical facts are.
[18/06, 17:39] Boy: "Thus the sword was closely associated with much of what was most significant in a man's life - family ties, loyalty to his lord, the duties of a king, the excitement of battle, and the attainment of manhood, and hte last funeral rites. It was something from which its owner was never parted throughout his life, from the moment that he received it and had the right to wear it. He carried it in the king's hall an dat law meetings, although on such occasions he was forbidden to draw it, and it might be fastened down in a scabbard. At night it hung above his bed... A sudden attack often came at night,a nd to lose hold of one's sword... was a terrifying experience. If it had to be sent away to be resharpened, it was necessary to find another sword to take its place, and even this temporary substitution may cost a man dear. It was indeed, as is often said in one of the Anglo-Saxon riddles, the prince's "shoulder companion", his close friend ever at his side, and "the warrior's comrade".
*long tangent about the fact that a man who no longer has a sword is a non-entity*
"Now it is obsolete, and we can catch only the reflection of its former splendour in the literature of the past. THere isno single object among hte possessions of a modern man which may be compared to it."
[18/06, 17:40] Boy: another thing that Hilda Davidson doesn't talk about is covered at the beginning of a newer book about swords, because ofc she's writing in the 70s, she underplays the role of women having swords as well
[18/06, 17:41] Boy: so you have this situation where everyone in society might have a sword, not because it's a practical weapon, but because it represents your agency as a human
[18/06, 17:41] Boy: interestingly, this behaviour is more common in the south of England than the north, and it's particularly common in Kent
[18/06, 17:41] Boy: so you might have a situation where, in Northumbria, having a sword is quite the claim, but in Kent everyone and their mum has a sword
Hilda Davidson being the person that wrote that in her book about swords. Boy was saying to me that a more modern example would be a mobile phone, though not quite the same. An expensive mobile phone Vs a cheep one. The status of it. The fact you keep it with you all the time, must replace it if you don't have it. Another comparison is an expensive car. One a friend pointed out is an heirloom gun in America.
Naturally I'm thinking about it in terms of fantasy stories and I know various people will enjoy the food for thought for the same reason.

2021 Reading Log, pt. 8
36. Virus by Marilyn J. Roossinck. I know I had checked this book out before and theoretically read it, but it turns out I remembered almost nothing about its contents. Reading a book on a family vacation, in the room as the rest of your family, will do that. The book is half an introduction to virology and half a species guide to individual viruses of interest, with electron micrographs and diagrams showcasing viral architecture. Viruses are super weird, and they get weirder in non-animal hosts. Plant and fungal viruses are often only transmitted vertically, from parent to offspring. Some plant viruses come in multiple protein shells, and all of them have to be transmitted simultaneously in order for an infection to occur. Some viruses, like poxviruses, have multiple internal layers of structure protecting their DNA. Highly recommended book for anyone interested in microbiology.
37. Gathering Moss by Robin Wall Kimmerer. The subtitle calls it a “natural and cultural history of mosses”, which is a fair description. The author is as interested in her subjective experiences, and those of others, as she is in straightforward biology, and each chapter weaves a bit of personal narrative in with the biology. This was jarring at first, as she describes a meditative vision in the first chapter as flowing from a more naturalistic passage, but I got used to the back and forth as the book progressed. Plus, I learned a lot about moss diversity.
38. The Occult Book by John Michael Greer. Meh. This is part of the “Sterling Chronologies”, which break down some topic of cultish interest into 100 chronological subdivisions, and illustrate and summarize them. The author is a certified occultist, a Druid specifically, but does a poor job of actually talking about beliefs or practices of magic, getting lost in the names and dates. I definitely learned some things (like about the existence of Long Lost Friend, a Pennsylvania Dutch grimoire), but was overall somewhat disappointed.
38a. Fossil Men by Kermit Pattison. I got about a third of the way through this book before stopping for reasons of mental health. It was triggering my anxiety. This is a book about the discovery of Ardipithecus, an important late Miocene primate that (depending on who you ask) may be the oldest identified human ancestor. The head researcher on “Ardi”, Tim White, is a deeply unpleasant person, and is deeply unpleasant in ways reminiscent of my major professor in grad school (not the only reason I’m on anti-anxiety medications, but perhaps the greatest). I was under the impression from the reviews that this was going to be a fairly objective look at the large, clashing personalities that dominate paleoanthropology, but this book clearly lionizes White as someone who doesn’t play nice, but gets results. By the time the author refers to White “not viewing science as an exercise in building consensus” as a positive characteristic, I knew that my philosophy and personality were not simpatico with that of the author. As an unintentional study of the intersection between evolutionary biology and toxic masculinity, it’s interesting, but 156 pages was enough time spent in a defense of a bad scientist and bad man, and I do not care to finish it.
39. The Secret Life of Sharks by A. Peter Klimley, PhD. This is an excellent antidote to Fossil Men, as the author comes off as genial and stresses the hard work and the missteps of doing science, as opposed to coming to conclusions first and defending them second. The book is a memoir of his first three decades doing shark science, from lemon sharks in Florida to hammerheads in the Gulf of California and finally white sharks in California. By now, Klimley’s work is seen as landmark stuff, and his hypothesis that white sharks are picky feeders attracted mostly to fatty meals is widely accepted. At the time of this writing, however, he wasn’t quite such a big fish (pun intended). A whole chapter, for instance, is devoted to how he defended a controversial claim from peer review.
40. Dark Sun Monstrous Compendium Vol. 2 by TSR Inc. Read in anticipation of statting up a bunch of Dark Sun monsters for the Creature Codex. As 2nd Edition D&D monster books go, this has plusses and minuses. Plusses: the art is in full color and all done by one artist, Thomas Baxa, which gives it a pleasing uniformity. There’s a lot of imaginative monsters on display here, some of which appeared in later Dark Sun products in different editions, and some which were brand new to me. But since I don’t have a copy of the Complete Psionics Handbook at hand, I don’t know what a lot of the powers of the various monsters actually are—I’m just going on context clues and half-remembered 3rd edition psionics. In addition, there’s some padding at play here. Six pages are devoted to various subgroups of thri-kreen and tohr-kreen (mantis people, for those unfamiliar with the setting). They all have their own art, but are mechanically identical, differing only in their alignments and cultures. The statistics are literally copy and pasted from one page to the next.

Leave No One Behind
Ch1: You Gotta Have A Plan Co-Written with @icanfeelastormbrewing
Chapter Summary: After returning from Sudan following their arrest, Sam and Ari go their separate ways…but Ari just can’t let things go. He needs a plan to break the refugees he left in the camp out. And he comes up with a plan so ridiculous that it just might work. That is, if he can pull together the right team.
Unfortunately he knows that the 2 people he probably needs and wants there the most, are going to be the toughest to convince. After all, they are siblings…
Chapter Warnings: Bad Language words.
Chapter Pairings: Ari Levinson x OFC Hannah Horowitz
A/N: Now, we believe from what research and reviews tell us, that RSDR takes place basically between 1979 and 1982 (the real Operation Brothers upon which it is based upon ran until 1984). To keep this as historically factual as possible, we have done all the research we can find on Mossad, the history of the Jewish people in the 40s through 80s…the rest is purely down to our imagination.
If anything is factually wrong, we mean no offence. Chalk it down to slight creative license and take this for what it is- a work of fiction.

Leave No One Behind Masterlist // Main Masterlist
March 1979
Ari Levinson was a man who very rarely liked to sit still. He’d been the same as a boy, always needing to be doing something. And right now, even in a dark, sweaty, smelly cell in Sudan he was no different. Using the bars in the roof that gave them the only light and air into the area, he was doing pull ups, counting his way up to 100. When he finished his reps he dropped down with a sigh and made his way over to sit by Sammy who was leaning against the wall.
Ari glanced over at his friend, his fellow agent who simply looked at him without saying a word, and then looked away, both of them glancing up as Kabede, their in-country contact so to speak, walked over and sat besides Sammy.
“I heard the guards talking.” he said softly in his thick, African accent as Ari sat, his arms hanging over his knees. “They think we are smugglers. We need to get out of here.”
“Mr. Guy Thomas.” one of the guards called. All 3 of them exchanged a look, before Ari stood up and made his way to the cell door.
“You called?” he asked.
“You, and your friends…” the guard said, gun slung over his shoulder “You come with me…”
They did as they were told and were ushered into a small room, where they were unceremoniously handed their gear and told they were free to go. Ari did nothing but smile at Sammy, who rolled his eyes, because it was a knowing joke between everyone who ever ran a mission with Ari that he could fall in pig shit and come out smelling like roses.
Ari fished a packet of cigarettes out of his back pack, along with his shades and slipped them onto his eyes. He slung his bag over his shoulder and walked out into the sun, lighting his cigarette as he went. He paused for a moment, looking at the man who was leaning against a blue car, watching him. He jerked his head and Ari stepped towards him.
“And you are?” Ari asked, eyeing him up.
“I'm the reason you're out of there.” The man said, pushing himself off the car. Ari exchanged a look with Sammy as the man continued “Walton Bowen, American.”
“No shit.” Sammy said, his eyes still on the man as Ari shook his hand.
“Yeah?” Walton looked at him before he moved to shake his hand too “Cultural attaché, the embassy in Khartoum.”
“Oh. Well, you must have your hands full, considering the flourishing cultural scene in Sudan.” Ari said, the sarcasm evident in his tone and Walton gave a little laugh.
“Not nearly as flourishing as you with your anthropology studies, I'm sure.” Walton said, his voice level but Ari could detect the note of disbelief he carried. “We got a call from DC, you gents had gotten yourselves into a bit of a pickle.”
As Ari kept his eyes on the man and his face straight, besides him Sammy pointed
“Is that our stuff in the back of your car?”
Ari looked at Sammy then round to the car as Walton nodded.
“Yes, it is. I'm sorry about the hasty packing…” he said, gesturing to the car “…but I know you have a flight in less than five hours to London.”
Ari snorted, shaking his head a little. Of course we do, damned it Ethan.
“Where are you off to after that, boys?” Walton continued.
Ari didn’t reply, instead he chuckled, and turned from the man, walking over to where Kabede was stood a few feet away.
“Looks like they're calling me back. Are you gonna be okay?” Ari asked
“Yes” Kabede assured him “I will bring more families.”
“We'll find a better way.” Ari nodded, giving the man a friendly embrace, patting him on the back before he turned around and walked back towards Walton and Sammy.
“Hope you got my toothbrush…” he said, not stopping as he passed them both and made his way to the car. “It’s new.”
After a few hours layover in London, they were called to a desk and given tickets for a flight back to Isreal for an hour later. Ari fell asleep before the taxi down the runway had even finished and awoke a few hours later, stretching and ordering himself a beer. Before much longer the plane began it’s descent into Ben Guiron Airport and Ari let out a sigh. He knew he should be glad to be home, but he wasn’t. He hated leaving a job half done. But he wouldn’t deny he was looking forward to a shower. He felt disgusting, looked disgusting, smelt disgusting. Thank fuck Ethan had the sense to book an entire row out for him and Sammy each.
They cleared customs easily and were met by a driver who waved them over to a car.
“Home?” The man asked Ari as he took his bags from him to take them to the trunk. .
“Office.” Ari corrected, as he wrenched open the passenger door of the car. “You coming?” he asked Sammy as he sat down.
“Nah. Nah, I'm going back home.” Sammy looked at him.
“What?” Ari said, frowning as he got back out, leaning on the roof of the car.
“Back to the clinic.” Sammy said with a small smile.
Ari looked around, before he shut the door and walked over to Sammy, his mouth open in surprise.
What the hell are you talking about?” he asked gently.
“I called Ethan back in London, got a message to Hannah. She’s picking me up.” Sammy said taking a deep breath “I'm done.”
Sammy moved to pull Ari into an embrace, which Ari returned, albeit it a little half- heartedly as he was still reeling from Sammy’s revelation.
“Why?” he asked, patting Sammy on the back.
“I love you, man.” Sammy said, pulling away “You're a lucky guy. But when the luck runs out, then... you gotta have a plan, and you never have one. So... I'm out. “
Sammy looked around.
“You're out?” Ari said flatly, his eyebrows raising.
“I'm out.”
“Sammy.” Ari said gently as Sam turned away. He paused and turned to face Ari again, smiling.
“Goodbye, my friend.”
Sam quickly walked away down towards the pick-up area outside the terminal, as Ari called his name again, a little louder, but he ignored him.
Ari sighed and looked upwards, wiping a hand over his face before he glanced at Sam’s retreating back just in time to see a flurry of dark, wavy hair rushing towards him. Ari continued to observe from a distance as Sammy hugged his sister back, her face pressed into the side of his neck, Sammy gently rubbing at her back. When he finally let her go, Ari finally got a look at her and he had to smile. The last time he had seen Hannah had been almost 3 years ago, at her husband Andy’s funeral and Ari was pleased to see she looked better than she had that day. Her hair was longer, her cheeks were fuller again, no longer hollow with grief. Her skin was darker, more tanned...she looked healthy, back to her vivacious self along with, he hoped, that spark that bounced in her deep blue eyes, Eyes he knew so well.
He had first met Hannah through Sammy when she was 17, and he was 24. He had liked her from the off, despite being 7 years older than her and there’d been a spark, there was no denying that. But for various reasons, despite a 3 month long sort of fling, it hadn’t worked out. He’d backed off, instead admiring her from afar, constantly telling himself he was too old and no good for her, and then he had met Sarah. Their relationship at first had been based on total, physical attraction and had been a total whirlwind. They had married later that same year after discovering Sarah was pregnant, Ari wanting to do the right thing by her. Their daughter Maya was born 7 months later and for the first 4 years, he had to admit he’d been happy.
Meanwhile, Hannah had started dating another one of their agents and friends, Andy Horowitz. They’d married too and then sadly mere months after they had married Andy had been killed on a mission they’d been running some 3 years ago, a mission Ari had been in charge of.
Hannah said she didn’t blame Ari, but he’d seen it written on every inch of her pretty face. She’d hardly been able to look him in the eyes since Andy’s death, and as a result he had made no effort to reach out in the 3 years since Andy’s funeral. Which he knew was a selfish, shitty thing to do on his behalf, as they’d all been so close, family close even, but Hannah had always worn her heart on her sleeve and he couldn’t face the turmoil and heartbreak she was emanating.
Sammy assured him she didn’t hold him at fault, not really and that she was just upset, compounded by the fact she hadn’t been there and was only hearing everything 2nd hand. But still, it did nothing to assuage Ari’s guilt. Andy’s life cut so tragically short, and Hannah left widowed at such a young age…
The driver’s voice shook Ari out of his thoughts, and when his eyes focussed again he realised he was staring at nothing. Hannah and Sammy both long gone. With a nod to the man he climbed back in the car and they set off for HQ.
**** "You're pissed." Sammy told his sister, his eyes fixed on the road ahead.
Hanna didn't answer. She stared at the license plate of the car right before them as if it was the magic combination to some sort of treasure chest. She was avoiding looking at her brother. Of course she was pissed, that was out of the question, but she didn't want to discuss that in the middle of the early evening exasperating traffic. Why was the way out of the airport always so crammed with cars?
Sammy turned to look at her and read the signs like an open book. White knuckles from the intensity with which her hands where holding the steering wheel, furrowed brow and a twitch of the mouth where she was biting the inside of her right cheek. He took a deep breath and pinched the bridge of his nose.
"You are pissed. I can tell, Hannah."
"No, I'm not" she replied trying to sound as convincing as possible and hit the car horn three times. "Oh, come on! We all have places to be!"
"Yes, you are. And honking the horn while in a traffic jam won't get you anywhere quicker, you know that?" Sammy said raising an eyebrow at her sudden outburst.
"No, it won't. But it will keep me from slapping you across your stupid face." she bit back, admitting her irritation.
"Ok." Sammy said preparing for what was about to come slouched on the passenger seat "What's on your mind?"
"Damnit, Sammy. You know full well what's on my mind. You know perfectly fucking well." she hissed without even bothering to look at him.
He sighed and nodded as an only answer. Avoiding his sister's gaze, he turned and looked through the passenger window.
"Yet, there you go again." she resumed after a minute, once she had steadied her voice and swallowed the lump in her throat. "Getting yourself arrested. You could have been killed right there on the spot! I just ...."
"Hey…" Sammy said gently rubbing her thigh "It’s ok. I'm ok, right?"
Hannah nodded and wiped a stray tear from her cheek. There were a few minutes of silence in the car as the traffic resumed and Sammy waited patiently for his sister to get herself together before speaking.
"I spoke to Ethan from London, told him I'm out." Sam said.
"What?" Hannah asked surprised looking at her brother before rapidly turning her eyes to the road ahead.
"That last mission... it was just... I'm done. Can't do it anymore." Sam fumbled with the words while he rubbed the scars on his right hand with his left one.
Hannah looked at her brother again, before she sighed, concern flooding her system.
"What happened Sammy?" she asked, her tone soft “It must be something bad to make you want to leave it all behind.”
"Nothing. Don't worry about it. It's just… I'm tired of all that shit and need to get out, that's all." Sam replied trying to convince his sister and, most importantly himself, it was the right decision.
The sight of that woman letting herself drown in the river had taken a toll on him. It haunted him at night and whenever he closed his eyes. He could have done more, he should have saved her, he should have found her under that muddy water and swum with her to safety. But he hadn't been able to and he didn't want to go into another mission where he would lose lives instead of saving them.
"So, what's the plan?" Hannah asked a moment later trying to snap her brother out from the place he seemed to be lost in.
"The plan is getting home, have a shower, eat something decent and sleep till the new full moon." Sam deadpanned with a faint smile.
"I’d also consider a haircut." Hanna quipped smiling at him. "That mop doesn't suit you, neither does the moustache!"
"Yeah, well. Not much you can do when you're down there and under for six weeks." Sam stated before he smiled at her "You, on the other hand, look great, Han"
"Well, that's what you get when you shower and wash your clothes. You stink." she said winking at him and he laughed.
"Seriously though, what are you gonna do? “ Hannah asked him after a moments pause “You gotta have a plan."
"That's exactly what I told Ari..." Sammy shrugged and Hannah’s head whipped once more to look at him.
"Ari?" she asked double checking her brother "Was Ari on the mission with you? Actually, don’t bother answering because of course he was..." she trailed off.
"That reckless, lucky son of a bitch who never seems to have a back-up plan." Sam said before lighting a cigarette. “He was there alright.”
"I'd say the man without a plan has some things very well planned." she mused while tapping the steering wheel with her fingers.
"Yeah, well, as I told him I wanna go back to the clinic. If that's ok with you, that is."
"Of course it is Sam. It's our clinic, remember? And we could do with your help, in fact, it would be a blessing. We've been very busy lately." she said excited by the prospect of having her brother with her again. "Mum will be thrilled to hear that.” “How is she?” Sam asked.
“She’s ok.” Hannah said “I’ve been trying to get her to take it easy, consider retiring but…you know what she’s like.” Sammy snorted “Stubborn, opinionated, always thinks she knows best…that’s where you get it from.” Hannah merely raised her eyebrow and smirked a little. “I dare you to tell her that on Sunday…” “Sunday?” “Yeah, she hasn't told you yet but you're coming for lunch." Hannah smirked as Sammy rolled his eyes, smiling fondly “And she won’t take no for an answer.”
***** “Ladies and gentlemen. This afternoon, historic documents concluding the Treaty of Peace between the Arab Republic of Egypt and the State of Israel will be signed…” Ari could hear the reporter on the news growing louder as he strode through the Mossad HQ towards Ethan’s office.
“Is he in?” he asked Ethan’s secretary, not bothering to wait for an answer.
“Wait, don't go in there…”
“Thanks.” he said, ignoring her as he pushed the door open, giving a small annoyed huff of a laugh as he tossed his back pack to his left where it landed with a thud. He then made his way over to the decanter of scotch on the shelves to the right of the room, Ethan not even bothering to look at him from where he was leaning against his desk, his own tumbler in hand, watching the TV, dressed in a crisp black suit and white shirt as always, his tie impeccably knotted.
“The Prime Minister is about to sign the most important peace accord in our lifetime and he can't enjoy it because of some remote tribe of our people getting massacred on a continent no one cares about.” Ethan said a little emotively, his British accent crisp as ever as he took a sip of his drink.
“Well, maybe you should let me do my job instead of pulling me out.” Ari said, picking up his drink and turning towards the couch at the side of the room.
“Your job includes getting arrested?” Ethan asked, as he stood up straight and turned off the TV. Ari sighed as he slumped on the couch, one leg bent with his foot resting on the low coffee table in front of him “Or is this just another by-product of you being reckless and totally out of control?” he looked at Ari for the first time since he had walked into the room.
“Sudan. My god, Ari…” Ethan snorted angrily, picking up his decanter to top up the glass. “An enemy country in a perpetual state of... fucked-up-ness. What were you thinking?”
“I was thinking that hiding refugees in a refugee camp was a pretty brilliant idea.” Ari said simply with no trace of irony, as he scratched at an itch on his side before necked his liquor.
“And how do you propose to get them out of there?” Ethan looked at him.
Ari sighed and placed the empty glass on the side next to the phone “Still working on that.”
“This job pays in migraines.” Ethan shook his head as he crossed the room and topped up Ari’s glass. “You look like shit.” he said, pointing to him with the hand that held the decanter which he placed on the coffee table.
“Thank you.” Ari replied “Smell like shit, too. I was under for six weeks.” he reached for the now once again full glass as Ethan sat on a chair opposite him.
“How's Sarah?” Ethan asked.
Ari looked down, his finger tapping on the rim of the glass before he placed it back on the side and slumped down on the sofa again, his eyes focussing downwards on his thigh as it bent upwards in front of him, his hand hooking underneath it.
“She left me.”
“Your life's a mess.” Ethan stated and Ari simply raised his eyebrows in agreement “Well, maybe this is a blessing in disguise, then.”
“What is?” Ari asked, as Ethan took a drink. “Are you taking me off this?”
“Exfil is going to come up with some alternative plans for the Ethiopians.” Ethan said as Ari tipped is head back with a frustrated sigh, his hands flying out to his side. “Then we'll discuss with the boss how best to move forward.”
“Ethan, don't do that.” Ari pleaded sitting forward “You know those guys are morons, they're gonna waste months on plans that aren't viable. Months that we don't have. You gotta send me back.”
“Go home, take a shower, spend some time with the family.”
“Ah Fuck!” Ari sighed, before his voice grew louder and he crossed his arms, taking on the tone and appearance of a sullen child “No.”
“No?” Ethan looked at him “It's done, Ari. You're not going anywhere.”
And that was that. Ethan wasn’t for turning. In the end Ari had stormed out of the office, his mood darkening by the second, and it didn’t get any better when he arrived home to find the place dark, empty and a message from Sarah on the answer phone telling him she’d taken Maya to her parents place.
Her parent’s place in fucking New Jersey
“Spend some time with the family…” Ethan’s words rang around his head as he slumped on the bed, beer in hand looking at the now empty side of the closet that had contained most of Sarah’s clothes.
Yeah, chance would be a fine thing.
**** Ari spent the following days on a semi-comatose state. He kept strict grooming and feeding habits, which was something he quite enjoyed after six weeks of not being able to give much thought to it. He also took care of the chores now that it was only him at the house and set up a work-out routine to keep his one-track mind occupied and allow himself to physically blow off some steam.
He was frustrated to say the least. Frustrated at being pulled out by Ethan, who wasn't even willing to reconsider his reinstatement for the time being. And frustrated on how, and it ached to admit, he missed his daughter. He had seen Maya last before leaving for Ethiopia and he had told her, and so had he thought at the time, he would come back home and spend all the time possible with her. But she wasn't there when he came back.
Surprisingly enough, he didn't miss Sarah or, at least, not in the way he should. He did miss spending time with his family or the feeling of having a family to get back to and Sarah was part of that family. And, to tell the truth, he had never been home in this house alone. And, though he was beginning to come to terms with the fact this was his life going forward, he wasn't sure if he liked it. But, on the other hand he was also relieved. Sarah and he had been strained and fighting for so long before he left for the mission that her leaving had almost been a relief. And, in a sense, he was glad she had done it before he was the one who had to suggest that maybe they needed to concede things weren't working between them because, frankly, Ari Levinson was a chicken shit when it came to stuff like that
But what Ari wasn't was cut out for the mundane, office life. A couple of weeks later his mind was in a state of turmoil. He took a trip out to New Jersey for a few weeks under Ethan’s instructions where he spent some quality time with Maya and had a very frank discussion with Sarah. The papers she had left him to sign upon his return from Ethiopia were legal documents which would enter them both into a legal period of 2 years separation and upon the conclusion therefore a Divorce would be mutually agreed. There was no way back for the pair of them, and he was relieved that she felt the same way and signed the papers in presence of an attorney who assured him this was the easiest, least messy way to go about things. Sarah had also agreed to return to Tel Aviv at some point as she conceded that keeping Maya at the other side of the ocean wasn’t fair to him or her. But when that would be, she never said.
All in all he wasn’t feeling great when he returned to HQ at the end of April especially when he was told that Exfil had yet to come up with any decent sort of plan. He told Ethan, once again, that they were fucking morons but was told to steer well clear. But Ari had never been one to stay out of things, or pay any attention to his boss when he thought he knew better. Day and night the idea of getting the refugees out of that Sudanese refugee camp was still haunting him. He had to come up with something and it had to be as soon as possible, before those Exfil idiots fucked it up completely. So after weighing up the situation for week or so more, he decided to get on with it off radar. He knew the best way to get Ethan to hear him out would be coming up with a fool-proof plan-something so absurd, far-fetched if you will, that no one would suspect they were smuggling Jewish refugees out of Ethiopia.
So he did it by stealth, getting on with his normal duties of paper work and communicating with other Intelligence Operatives across the globe playing the co-ordination role Ethan had dumped him in and putting the final touches on the last mission reports he had been doing at Mossad Head Quarters. His day job so to speak.
The night times, however, well, they were his own. And he used them to do a bit of research of his own.
He tried not to be spotted when he went to the archives department and asked the assistant there for a specific microfilm. Last thing he wanted was Ethan or one of his subordinates sniffing he was up to something. At least not before he could flesh his plan out in order to give a proper presentation to Ethan.
And finally, after an arduous period of research and countless sleepless nights it came to him, one warm night at the end of June. He was examining one map of the area on the computer when he noticed the sea. They could do it, the answer had to be in the sea. Ari felt a sudden surge of optimism and started digging into the different possibilities for a way out through sea instead of land and a feasible cover. His smile reached his eyes when he spotted just what he was looking for and a hunch told him to go for it.
It took a few days for him to pull everything together and get what he needed, and contact the people he needed. Which was why, early one July morning he was pacing the Comms room, rubbing his beard nervously, ironically dressed in the same clothes he had been in a few days prior when the idea had originally occurred to him. It was funny now, how he didn’t have Sarah pecking his head about his outfits he simply donned his preferred casual clothing to the office, something his single friends at work seemed to do a hell of a lot. Speaking of which, he was feeling stressed out after a heated argument with his estranged wife over the phone earlier that day about him seeing Maya. She had kept her side of the bargain, returning to Tel Aviv, but as a result he’d moved out of the house, renting a two bed apartment not too far from what had been their family home. He’d had regular access and visits to his daughter, which had been fantastic, but tonight he’d been due to take Maya out for dinner. However, Sarah had changed her mind at the last minute, something to do with her work shifts and it being a school night. When he had pointed out that she didn’t give a shit about her school when she took her over to New Jersey for the best part of a month she’d simply called him an asshole and put the phone down. Unable to concentrate on anything he’d gone for a run and returned to the office when it was dark and most of the people had gone, to find there was still no communication waiting for him, to let him know if his plan was going to work.
And then, finally the fax from the Sudanese Tourist Board arrived and he knew he had a great plan. Now, he had to sell it to Ethan and it couldn't wait, despite the ungodly hour…
“Ethan! I have an idea.” Ari said as he climbed the stairs to Ethan’s apartment, backpack over his shoulder, his arms laden with rolled up maps and papers.
“It’s four o'clock in the morning.” Ethan said exasperatedly.
“It's a really good idea.” Ari assured him as he continued up the stairs. Ethan simply stood back as he entered his apartment “Do you always sleep in a silk robe?” Ari asked, turning to look at him before he headed into the living room. Ethan paused for a moment before he followed him in, shutting the door behind him.
Ethan listened patiently as he explained his plan, and for the most part simply nodded. When Ari finished, Ethan leaned back and smiled softly at him, his fingers drumming on the map Ari had spread over the table.
“You know what Ari…” Ethan said, a smile on his face “This is so ludicrous…it might just work…but you’ll need a good team.”
Ari smirked and handed Ethan another piece of paper, watching as his boss scanned down the names of the Agents and former Agents he had identified.
“This…” Ethan looked at him, shaking his head “This is not a team, it’s a recipe for disaster!”
“They’re the best of the best…” Ari shrugged.
"But the Navons?” Ethan looked at Ari, shaking his head in disbelief “You mean you want both of them? Seriously after everything that’s-?”
"Oh, no, my bad…” Ari said, cutting him off and reaching over and scribbling something on the paper as Ethan let out a sigh of relief before he looked up, his eyes twinkling as Ethan let out a groan as he spotted the correction Ari had made to the name. “She’s a Horowitz now..."
**** It took them a week to get all the details fleshed out to a point where Ethan was happy to take it to his superiors. Ari would have done it that same morning he had gone knocking on Ethan’s door but his boss had insisted on details and plans…something Ari wasn’t all that bothered by, preferring to work in the spur of the moment. Still, Ethan had insisted that he wouldn’t be able to sell the idea without answering questions, and had lectured him in great detail on the 5Ps, or 6 Ps in this case…
Proper preparation prevents piss poor performance…
He had to admit, however, Ethan had been right. As he began to spell out his ideas and plans to Isaacs, the Mossad Chief, he found himself being able to speak confidently, not just because he had conviction in his idea, but because he never once found himself lacking the ability to explain.
“The majority are coming in from Gondar and Tigray right there…” Ari said, leaning over from his chair to point at the map which was spread out on the desk. “But we can't land our planes anywhere near there.”
“Why?” Isaacs asked, looking at Ari from where he sat in his chair.
“Derg brought in the Russians and Cubans. It's limiting everyone's mobility. The chance of landing a plane without being noticed is non-existent.” Ari explained “The only way to get a substantial number out is by sea.”
“Ethiopia's practically landlocked.” Isaacs said, leaning forward and gesturing at the map.
Ari nodded in agreement, his hand rubbing at his beard before he looked at Ethan who was sat next to him in the other chair. Ethan inclined his eyes at Isaacs, instructing Ari to continue, so he did.
“But Sudan isn't.”
Isaacs paused from looking at the map and then glanced at Ari to Ethan and then back again.
“Seriously?”
Ari nodded.
Isaacs leaned back. “Something tells me this is going to take a bit longer than a few hours to explain…”
Ethan smiled a little and nodded “You could say that, yes.” “Ok…” Isaacs sighed, reaching for his phone “Let me make a few calls. I need to get my advisors down here…and food.” So that’s what he did. Ari found himself repeating various points again and again to different people as they headed in with various files, paper, pens…and he was getting a little frustrated as the night started to draw in. But he kept calm, taking his lead from Ethan who jumped in whenever he could sense Ari was starting to lose his cool a little, and Ari was thankful for the fact his boss was there.
“How long does it take to get from Sudan to Sinai by boat?” Isaacs asked.
“It takes three days.” Ethan began “You can…” “Just a-- Hold on a sec.” Isaacs said as Ari dropped his hands to his hips, leaning back against the large cupboard he was stood in front of. “Even if this could work, you'd need a team of agents on the ground. A team with international background.” Ethan and Ari exchanged a look, and both nodded at Isaacs as he continued “How are you gonna keep our agents that long inside an enemy state?”
“This is where it gets really good.” Ethan said, nodding at Ari who pulled an aerial shot out of the pack of files he had brought with him. Ari handed it to Isaacs.
“Red Sea Diving Resort. It's a hotel built by an Italian company in the early '70s.” Ari explained as he walked back to his leaning post, arms folded. “Fifty kilometres north of Port Sudan. The Italian company abandoned it five years ago. Now the Sudanese government is looking to lease it, to boost tourism.”
The room fell silent as Isaacs looked at the photo, his expression perplexed which then morphed into surprise. He looked at Ari, how shifted a little uncomfortably, waiting for him to comment on the idea. Instead Isaacs stood up, and moved to his phone.
“Ask the Defence Minister if he can join us.” he said simply, and Ethan glanced at Ari, giving him a smile.
About twenty minutes later, the Defence Minister a Mr Henry Weiss joined them and listened carefully to what they had to say, Ari explaining once again what the outline of his plan was. It took him another hour, and it felt like he had been explaining this all day. Which, in reality, he had.
“Let me get this straight.” Weiss said, sitting on the edge of the desk as Isaacs sat in the chair behind hit, both hands behind his head as he was flanked by various other people from his agency, all of them watching Ari who was sat perched on another unit to Weiss’ right “You want Mossad, the Israeli intelligence service, to purchase an abandoned hotel from the Sudanese government.”
“Lease, but yeah.” Ari said, nodding, his hand curling around his chin and mouth in an L-shape.
“Abandoned because?”
“Because the area where it's located is lawless. It's controlled by the Hadandawa.” Ari said, and for the first time he started to feel a little less confident.
“By the who?” Weiss looked at him
“It's a Bedouin tribe.” Ari supplied.
“Translates, The Lion Clan” Tellem, one of the military agents stood around the room supplied “Known for cannibalizing their enemies.”
“No…” Ari quickly began to protest as Isaacs glanced at the military agent who had spoken. “That's...” he took a pause and looked at Ethan who shifted and stared at Ari. And Ari knew why, because he hadn’t told any of this to Ethan. “ No, that's... not anymore.” Ari folded his arms in front of him. “Now it's... human trafficking. -Girls to Jedda, that sort of thing—“
“This... just gets better and better.” Ethan looked at Ari.
“So, your idea, just to reiterate…” Weiss drew the attention back to him “Is to send a group of Jews to a Muslim country, to a place where they might get eaten by Bedouins, to run a fake hotel, in order to rescue a group of black Jews who might or might not survive a 1,000-kilometer walk across the desert, to be smuggled out to sea by Israeli Navy Seals to an Israeli ship.”
“Disguised as a petroleum service vessel, yeah.” Ari said, smiling slightly.
“That's ridiculous.” Tellem said with a sigh.
There was silence around the room. Ari looked up, and could take no read on anyone’s body language. He locked eyes with Ethan who gave him a sympathetic look and he let out a breath shaking his head.
Back to the drawing board.
“Is NATCOR still operational?” Weiss asked suddenly as Ari stood up.
“Yep” Isaacs replied, his eyes on Ari.
“What's NATCOR?” Ari frowned, hands on his hips.
“It's a shore company in Switzerland we use for large transactions.” Isaacs said simply
“How large?” Ari asked, not sure what this had to do with anything.
“Like leasing a hotel.” Isaacs said.
Well, shit!
With a small smile, one that was more from shock than victory he looked at Ethan who eyed him appraisingly.
“How long do you need?” Weiss asked and looked at Isaacs.
“I can pull the strings in NATCOR in a week or so but I need to know how much we need and when for.” Isaacs said, and once again all attention turned to Ari and Ethan.
“We’ll need a couple of months to pull the team together, get everything organised…leasing agreements that sort of thing…” Ethan said, looking at Ari
“Give me 3 months.” Ari nodded in agreement. “Maximum.”
*****
It turns out that the Sudanese Tourism Board play hard ball. 6 weeks it took. 6 fucking weeks to negotiate a price and a timescale. Originally they’d been willing to lease the Diving Resort from the middle of March until, after agreement of a slightly higher price, they had brought the date forward to January. That was still too far away for Ari’s liking, but as Ethan had reminded him if they missed even one cross on a t or a dot on an I, they were done for.
Finally, at the end of August, they had ironed out every crease they could see, and the confirmation that they had been accepted to hire the abandoned resort came through. A week later, at the start of September, Ari left Tel-Aviv again to start his recruiting spree. First stop, a Pan Am plane with destination Belize.
He was having a coffee and tapping some stray sugar grains on the table surface with his index finger's pad absent-mindedly when his plane was called. His mind went to Maya as he waited in line, boarding pass in hand. He’d spent a lot of time with her over the last week, deliberately, and he knew she understood why he didn’t live with them anymore, but she hadn’t understood why he was going to be going away again. And then, on the last day before he left she had been especially quiet and brooding. Ari had tried to make small conversation with her but had failed and had opted to explain to his daughter why he had to go, as best as he could. She still hadn't reacted as Ari expected and he had to admit defeat. The final blow had come when he had asked Maya about the drawing he was holding of her family, a drawing he was absent from, and she had told her father he wasn't in the picture because he was at work. He hadn’t mentioned it to Sarah, it simply wasn’t worth the hassle.
"You've got to be kidding me" Rachel Reiter said to Ari with a chuckle as she stopped at the end of his row, trolley before her "What are you doing on this flight?" she added impersonating the perfect flight attendant.
"I'd like some tomato juice, please." Ari ordered with a smile.
She served him his tomato juice and sat on the free seat next to him. Ari explained to her he had pulled some strings to find out which flight she would be working. Not that Rachel needed to know. She was perfectly aware of what Ari was capable of and how Mossad worked. Thus, she explained the mission she was on, having scanned the briefcase of a passenger, a PLO accountant.
Ari spent the following five minutes explaining briefly what the mission he was attempting to recruit her for consisted of.
"Ex is in stable asshole condition. Kids are perfect." Rachel told Ari when he asked about her family.
"And you're ok leaving them for an unknown amount of time?" he asked waiting for the confirmation she was in.
"If we don't do something no one will" was what Ari replied Rachel after she asked him to give her a good enough reason to enrol. And that was more than enough, as she smiled and nodded imperceptibly.
"Tell me one last thing." Rachel said standing up and brushing her skirt. "Who's in Belize?"
"Excuse me?" Ari asked with a poker face.
"I know you Ari. I've been running small missions on flights for the past 5 months, they must have told you. And yet you have chosen exactly this one to come talk to me?" she said whispering as she leaned to grab the tray where the now empty glass of tomato juice lay.
"Wait and see Rachel." he said with a broad smile. "I'll be in touch soon."
*******
It was hot, very hot when, a day later Ari sat at a table in a beach bar in Half Moon Caye waiting for Jake to finish his private lesson. Not exactly a diving one.
"What brings the great Ari Levinson all the way to Belize?" Jake Wolf greeted Ari from the door of the decompression tank, wearing nothing more than a dazzling smile.
"I have a unique mission to offer you." Ari told him "But I'm not gonna offer you anything until you cover yourself up" he joked watching as Jake approached him, arms open to give him a hug.
Jake ignored his friend’s request and after brazenly taking a cigarette out of Ari's packet sat on the chair facing him. Ari explained to Jake that he needed someone with expertise and diving skills for a mission related to what in Jake's words was a bloody genocide no one gives a shit about because it's in Africa.
So when Ari told him that his Prime Minister had decided to give a shit, he was convinced he had gained Jake's adventurous spirit and he would be on board.
An hour and some beers later, Ari had explained to Jake the mission in detail and they both had caught up on their lives.
"Be ready to be called in in about a month give or take." Ari told Jake who nodded.
"Why don't you stay a couple of days? Look around you. This is paradise, my friend." Jake said a big grin and open arms pointing at the white sand beach and tropical palm trees.
"I have a flight tomorrow morning." Ari had to refuse his friend’s offer, implying he had still places to be and people to recruit.
"Where to?" Jake asked knowingly.
"Amsterdam." Ari answered before puffing his cigarette. “At least that’s where my next victim was last time I checked…”
Jake just nodded, a faint glimmer of a smile showing, before saying "Then, the night is young. Let's make the most of it before you leave."
******
"You fucked up my lunch, man" Max Rose told Ari after lowering the gun he was pointing at his former mentor.
A mixture of relief and annoyance crossed Max’s face as he waited for Ari to give an explanation as to why was he sat in his arm chair, in the middle of his rented flat in Amsterdam, reading the fucking newspaper with a stupid grin on his stupid face.
"I have a mission for you." Ari said.
"Of course, you have" Max scoffed before hugging him. "But you're buying me lunch if you want me to listen to you."
And that's what they did. Ari knew if you had to win Max over, it had to be around food. After explaining the mission and what Max’s role would be, Ari had one last question and he had deliberately saved it for last when he knew Max would already be on board.
"Max, I need to know you're fine with all this because I need you to be focused. Are you ready to go back down there after Andy?"
"Absolutely." Max said without hesitating. But Ari could see a glint of sadness in his eyes.
"Good." Ari said sympathetically "Then I guess I'll contact you in a month or so." Ari added before he raised his glass to toast for the mission.
***** 4 days later, just over a week after leaving, Ari was back in Tel-Aviv, having saved the discussion he knew was going to be the hardest until last.
He sat in the waiting room of the Ethan Navon Memorial Clinic, a place in which he hadn’t been for easily over 5 years, and was eventually ushered into the Examination Room where the nurse popped a thermometer under his tongue as he sat on the trolley, waiting.
“How can I help you Mr…Aw, fuck me!” Sammy groaned as he looked at Ari who gave him a cheeky smile “What the fuck? What the fuck are you doing here?” he turned to his nurse “What the fuck is he doing here?”
“Hey, hey, just... Calm down.” Ari said gently, “I need to talk to you. Five minutes.”
Sammy tossed his file and glasses down on to the small equipment trolley and said something to his Nurse. She nodded, making a hasty exit and as Sammy went to close the door it stopped before he could shut it fully and swung fully open again, Hannah stepping into the room, frowning at her brother.
“Sammy? What's going on? I can hear you shouting all the way over in the other room? What’s the…” she trailed off as Sammy nodded towards Ari, her mouth falling open when she saw him “Fuck me…”
"Hey Hannah, how you doing?” Ari gave her a small smile. “You look great by the way."
And he meant it. Her hair was pulled back into a bun at the nape of her neck and she was dressed in a simple pencil skirt and blouse, her white doctors coat open.
"What do you want Ari?" she asked softly.
“It's a nice clinic you got.” Ari said, taking the thermometer out of his mouth, ”Save a lot of lives here?
“No. But we don't take any lives either.” Hannah shrugged as Ari took a deep breath, steeping his hands together.
“I know how to get 'em out, Sammy.”
Sam scoffed
“I got a plan. And it's good.” Ari was almost whispering with excitement as he stood up off the bed.
“Yeah, that's...” Sam looked at his sister, laughing sarcastically “That's what you always say, until everything goes to shit.”
“Right, just hear me out. You don't like what I gotta say, I'm going.” Hannah and Sammy both exchanged a look as Ari began to pull the documents and details out of his rucksack, standing on the other side of the examination bench.
“Ari…” Hannah began as she stepped forwards, but Sam gently touched her arm and he moved towards Ari, shaking his head.
“Ari, Ari…no…”
“What? You don't wanna hear the plan?” Ari asked gently.
“Stop.” Sam instructed him.
“You don't wanna hear it? You'd rather be here than in the field?” Ari asked, disbelief in his tone as his voice grew louder.
“Shh!” Hannah instructed the pair of them as Sammy began packing the stuff back into Ari’s backpack for him.
“Why?” Ari pressed “You're the best field doctor I know.”
“I used to be.” Sam said gently “Back when I had two good hands.”
“Hey, both hands tied behind your back, you're still the best.” Ari said honestly. Sam paused and looked at him for a second, before Ari took a deep breath. “I need you on this one….” he looked over Sammy’s shoulder and locked eyes with Hannah “Both of you.”
She frowned a little, her arms unfolding and dropping to her hips as she studied him.
“I can't do it without you.” Ari finished, diverting his attention back to Sam. Hannah watched her brother who paused for a moment, before he turned and walked past her, opening the door. He glanced back at Ari and said, quite forcefully.
“No.”
Hanna’s gaze dropped to the floor as Ari gave a small sigh “Alright…” and gathered up his belongings “Okay…” She looked up at him as he walked past, and he gave her a pleading look which she met with a passive one of her own as he gave her a sad smile, before he walked out, Sam avoiding his gaze as he did so.
The two siblings stood in silence for a moment before Hannah met Sam’s eyes.
“Oh no…” Sam groaned “Seriously…” “Can it hurt to hear him out?” She asked gently.
“Are you serious? For fucks sake…”Sam groaned. “You are, aren’t you?”
Hannah shrugged. Sam eyed his sister again and then rolled his eyes and his shoulders slumped in defeat.
"Fine we’ll listen...” Sam said loudly, as he walked into the doorway, leaning out of it as Ari stopped and turned to face him “But only out of curiosity…because I'm still gonna say no.”
Both siblings ushered Ari to Sam's office, Hannah leading the way. She opened the door to let both men in.
Ari could smell a familiar scent of vanilla when he walked past Hannah into the room and couldn't help but smile softly at her but she was staring at her feet and didn't notice. He tried to make eye contact with her as she helped Sammy to clear the small round table at the right far corner of the office, but to no avail. He could only catch a glimpse of her long eyelashes where the locks that had fallen off her bun allowed him to.
It was only when Sam asked him to do what he had to do that she raised her head from the table and her big blue eyes looked directly at his, stopping there for a couple of seconds. A couple of seconds which Ari hoped had been enough to convey the message he wanted her to get. One second; I'm sorry. Another one; help me out in this.
A couple of seconds later her gaze went to the back pack that hanged from his left shoulder. Battered, colour faded by uncountable missions and frayed at the seams.
"Ever thought of changing that? It could use a bit of a wash?" Hannah asked, her head nodding towards the back pack as she crossed her arms over her chest.
He looked at it confused and when he returned his eyes to Hannah saw she was smiling.
"It's been with me through thick and thin. Couldn't get rid of it at this point." Ari replied returning the smile and placing the back pack on the table.
"All right, let's get this over with." Sammy urged Ari while he took a lot of documents, photographs and maps out.
Sam wasn't willing to spend any more second on pleasantries. He knew if he gave Ari the chance, he was bound to dive head first into whatever crazy plan he had come up with this time and the quicker he did that, the quicker he could tell him to piss off.
Thus, Ari spread the documents out and for the following 45 minutes he talked Sam and Hannah through his plan for the mission. He had been more thorough with details and careful with sensitive information as he knew Sam would be a harder nut to crack than Rachel, Jake or Max. Especially if he wanted Hannah in.
Both siblings remained silent during the explanation. Sharing a glance from time to time, but Ari was too excited and focused on trying to explain his plan well to read too much into it. When he finished he put his hands on his hips, blew a strand of hair that had fallen over his forehead and grinned with satisfaction, looking at them expectantly
Sammy, who had his arms crossed, moved a hand to his face rubbing his jaw and his eyes flicked a moment from the documents on the table to his sister. Hannah wasn’t looking at her brother, however, her attention was solely on the information Ari had set out.
"Is that a brochure for the hotel?" she asked as she took a brightly coloured and glossy document which was folded in the middle.
"Yup." he said popping the p.
"You've really given this plenty of thought." she said admiring the brochure as well as the rest of maps and planning documents scattered over the table.
"I have." Ari replied, his eyes pleading with her.
"So, just to be clear, you want us all to play house while smuggling refugees in and then out of fucking Sudan." Sam snorted.
"Basically, yes. And you sound like one of Isaacs' dogs." Ari protested.
Sam was about to bite back when Hannah grabbed his arm to cool him down.
"I think it's a brilliant plan." she said looking from Sam to Ari.
"Yeah, now he's the man with a plan." Sam scoffed and turned to look at her sister "And I don't care what you think, you're not going."
"Are you listening to yourself, Sam?" she said visibly annoyed at her brother’s overprotectiveness "You don't get to say what I am or am not doing. You hear me?"
Ari lowered his head and smiled at Hannah's outburst. She had always been an independent and opinionated girl and that had caught his attention right from the start. And she had turned into the determined and strong-willed gorgeous woman that stood there right in front of him, telling her older brother to basically fuck off. Ari couldn’t help but think how different she was from Sarah, who had become so clingy and demanding over the last few years.
"How do you even plan on getting all this up and running?" Sam asked Ari ignoring his sister.
"I said I’d have the details ironed out and a team assembled in 3 months and that was eight and a half weeks ago now, give or take” he said, looking at Sam then to Hannah “ I've got another three or so weeks to come up with covers for everyone and hand them out for memorizing. If everything goes to plan then we should be ready to deploy in January.”
Sam sighed and looked up at his sister who was busy studying the map, her sharp eyes roving over the details. Ari watched her for a second as she bit her lip before he looked back at Sam.
"I need you in this Sammy. I can't do it without you." he pleaded. Sam gave him a look, before he turned away shaking his head, clearly lost in his conflicting thoughts. Ari then switched his attention to Hannah. "And I need you too, Firefly.” At the use of his nickname for her she looked up, her eyes locking onto Ari’s a faint smile playing on her face as he held her gaze” I know I'm in no position to ask you to come with me. Not after what happened to Andy. But I really need a female doctor to take care of those refugee women."
Hannah visibly faltered at the mention of Andy. She hadn’t expected to hear his name, least of all from Ari's lips. He was really bringing the big guns out. But then again, persuasion tactics aside, it was a good plan and he was right about needing a woman to help out. Sammy had told her what had happened to that woman that had let herself drown on his last mission after they had found her bloodied and bruised by a tree after a vicious rape. It was common for women to be abused like that by the local authorities who persecuted them, and if there was something she could do to help, then Hannah already knew deep down that wouldn't be sitting the mission out. Andy wouldn't have done either and she was willing to bet Sam was already considering taking up Ari's offer. That fucking handsome bastard always got what he wanted. She would know.
"Which dumbasses have you got to agree to it so far?" Sammy asked, moving the discussion swiftly on. He had spotted his sister’s reaction to the mention of her late husband. She’d visibly wavered and Sammy had seen her right hand go straight to her necklace, where she wore her engagement ring and wedding band, an action she always undertook when she was nervous or the memory of Andy hit her. And it hadn’t gone unnoticed by Ari either.
"Jake Wolf, who you know from a few missions, Max and Rachel..." Ari offered, turning to Sam.
"Max?" Hannah asked still fiddling with her necklace, but a look of surprise now on her face “Max agreed?”
Ari nodded smiling at her. He knew she would be in when she heard the name of her best friend. That was the reason he hadn't mentioned the names of the rest of the team along with the explanation and ensuing conversation. It was an ace up his sleeve he hadn’t wanted to play until necessary. And Sammy, good old Sammy, had provided him with the opportunity on a silver plate. A simple list of names, strategically ordered, and the match point was his.
Hannah looked at her brother and gave him a smile, inclining her head slightly, an action Ari knew all too well to be her conceding her agreement. He managed to resist the urge to punch the air in victory, but didn’t fight the smirk that slid across his face as he turned to Sam and asked.
"Are you dumbass enough to jump in?"

(teamjacobthot) spare headcanons? 🥺 spare wolf pack autumn headcanons? 🥺 your pumpkin carving ones warmed my heart ❤️
!!! yes ! i wrote most of this during my lunch break, and TRIED to write it on my way home, but tumblr kept crashing. hopefully this is okay !!!!!
apple picking + other fun activities @ cute farm... which is most definitely inspired by a small farm around me
!!! so this little farm is very much known for their orchards !! i actually looked it up and washington produces lootttsss of apples. didn’t know that
despite this, it also has a corn maze, a tiny lil barn/petting area for people to visit their animals
they also sells various jams nd jellies! ofc, this includes a taste test center <3
kinda gross now that i think about it cause of covid but,,,, we r going back to the 2000s
it was originally emily’s idea to go, and after several months of asking (she had been asking since spring time) they finally gave in!!!
so they had to travel a tiny bit, so they made a day out of it !!! it would prolly be the first time they all left on a day trip together.
it’s a nice day too, sunny nd a little breezy... and just a tad chilly. emily brings a coat just in case.
at the lil farm, they ofc spend time trying out the various samples, which is where they split up:
emily nd sam want to go on a hay ride (i might die from cuteness) before going apple picking. they want to skip out on the corn maze, it takes too long and emily is there on a mission::: she has lots of pies to make at home
she has pies to bake. and embry also wants apple crisp.
they hold hands a lot nd talks about the future. it’s nice to be alone for once.
jake, embry, nd quil go to the corn maze. and like idiots
they choose the hardest level. and get lost. and separated. for like two hrs lol
at one point, before they get separated, jake tries to scare quil... he ends up jumping out at a small child.
he’s embarrassed embarrassed, and obviously panics. he gets cussed out by an angry mom. quil and embry refuse to let him live it down
seth nd leah go to the barn first to visit lil animal friends :( seth tries SO HARD to make friends with the chickens but faILS. he gets pecked a lot.
he gives up and goes to pet nd feed the goats. they’re a little nicer, even if they do push for food.
i have this feeling that cats gravitate towards leah
so a cranky barn cat most definitely comes to say hi as she watches her brother have fun... plus she’s warm, so it jus, sleeps on her?? she falls in love.
soon several more come. she is now a cat mommy. temporarily.
paul nd jared linger back to keep eating food samples. they eventually get kicked out HAHAH
paul goes to meet up with leah nd seth !!
he actually succeeds in befriending the chickens
seth is jealous
jared goes to the corn maze :)
he eventually runs into embry !! where they try to make it out of the maze....
it takes a bit tbh. even with their two heads put together.
but jared starts better than the other three did
after a v v v long time
anyway so they finally all make it to the end, jake nd quil waiting patiently.
they go off to find sam and em!! both of which are carrying large bags of apples. sam has two :)
it’s sam’s job to go find the other bubs, so he lets the others carry his apples to the car. they’re honestly all a little sleepy and they all wanna go home...
sam finds leah passed tf out with several cats surrounding her, with seth and paul close by.... both have chickens in their laps.
paul has taught seth the way ;-; they converse quietly together
UGH i’m actually sO sad :(( i wish we were able to see their friendships like this
clearwater x lahote friendship is unmatched
i can go on a whole tangent about that
i digress
seth noticies sam first !!!! so he waves nd is the first to wake leah up
she doesn’t say anything,,, sleepy ofc... just wordlessly nods her head nd starts to walk towards the cars
and they go home, happy
i refuse to let sm ruin cute pack dynamics to favor the cullens anymore
this was so fun to write! and honestly was on my mind most of the day. feel free to add on too, my brain is only capable of articulating so much information

FOR THE FLUFFY DAY: Haruka and Mina + braiding
Fluff piece two! 1778 words, I HOPE THE FACT THAT THESE ARE LONGER ARE MAKING UP FOR QUANTITY. From the Talismans rewrite, located here
Mina didn’t mind a hard night, not really. There was something very clarifying about a good fight, and she understood, in some ways, how Haruka and Mako--sometimes the more annoying of her soldiers-- could constantly be looking to get into the middle of the fray without a second’s thought. It was nice to simply start the ass-beating and skip all of the strategy, sometimes.
Last night had been like that. Wave on wave of mindless youma, Mina and Rei fighting them off alone for what should have felt like far too long but always filled Mina with a certain amount of dangerous, almost erotic thrill, Rei covering her with a flurry of arrows as she burst into the fray with her chain.
It had been really fun until Mina got caught out, and then she’d gotten a little more of the business end of the youma than she’d bargained for. It had been fine, really--Mina was rarely defeated even when she was down, and this time was no different--and as the other senshi showed themselves, rushing to the scene, the youma had been defeated with the usual expediency.
It was always the next morning that got you, though.
Mina half-limped herself to the couch that morning, still in nothing but the overlarge shirt she’d managed to pull on and her underwear, not bothering with anything else, proud enough of herself for daring to move at all. Her hair hung around her face and how her back, bedraggled and half-tangled from the fight. Magical healing. It was a thing, that much was true, but it never stopped things from hurting. She felt every broken bone, every torn sinew of her muscle, even if it didn’t kill her. Even if it would be all sorted out in a few days, the pull of whatever spell kept them in good order exerting its own painful force on their bodies as it forcibly knit them back together, readying them for the next fight.
It was a blessing, and it was bullshit, in the way that a lot of things in Mina’s life seemed to be.
Ignoring the hour on the clock, she pulled a cheap beer out of the fridge, and with herculean effort, her shoulder screaming, popped off the bottle cap, washing down several ibuprofen with the swig of it. She should have bought some Oxys off of Hayato. He always had something, though even Mina couldn’t even begin to guess how he had such a firm supply.
In fairness, she couldn’t have foreseen the fight last night, and even less so her own misstep. All things being equal, she shouldn’t be shuffling around the apartment. She gave a gaze to the various takeout boxes and other assorted foods in the tiny kitchen, but shook her head, before realizing what and awful choice that was and enjoying a full-body wince, which caused other parts to hurt, and as the black dot confetti of pain settled over her, she managed to slump onto the couch.
She normally didn’t mind a hard night, but this was a little much.
The heavy footfall across the apartment meant her roommate was up and around. She wasn’t in any mood for whatever sort of angst having seen Michiru last night was going to bring out in Haruka, and closed her eyes. Maybe she could play dead.
“Mina, you okay?”
No such luck. Mina opened one eye and looked at her. She was still a string bean, gaining weight back slowly from the twin indulgences of drinking too much and eating too little over the past months, but if Mina was being fair, she’d been a good deal more stable lately. She’d banned herself from liquor and reminded herself to eat and managed to stay away from picking fights with groups of men, ever since Mina read her the riot act a few weeks ago.
No reason to disincentivize her acting more like a human being interested in her own survival.
“Yeah, I’m fine,” she shuffled uncomfortably, “just feeling the consequences of my actions from last night.”
She chuckled, which was a mistake, and she closed bother her eyes again, taking a sip of her beer.
“You fought really good,” Haruka nodded, “I wish I’d been there sooner.”
“Unfortunately,” MIna pointed to Haruka with the tip of her beer bottle, “no matter how many times I ask, they refuse to RSVP. We’d be so much better prepared.”
Haruka pushed back her hair and smiled. “Yeah.”
They looked at each other for a moment, and then Haruka nodded again. “Hang on just a sec.”
She hurried away from the couch, and MIna laid her head back on the couch. She was going to have to call in for her shift tonight, see if she could get someone to cover. She hated to miss out on the money, but even if she managed to drag herself into the club tonight, no man was going to want to spend time with a wincing hostess, covered in bruises. It was a lost cause to begin with, and her boss liked her, or at least her popularity with the patrons, so a call-in it would have to be.
Mina was still thinking on these things when Haruka reappeared with two scruffy pillows from her own bed and a fluffy comforter that must have been tucked away somewhere in Haruka’s small room. Haruka sat delicately on the edge of the couch and swept her arm behind Mina’s shoulder, carefully pulling her forward and placing the pillows behind her. Mina opened her mouth to say something, but found herself quite unable, as Haruka tucked the comforter around her. How long had it been since someone had taken care of her like this? Her parents were busy with their work and the too-many kids they’d had for reasons that utterly escaped Mina, to bother as soon as she could reach the kitchen countertops. People didn’t naturally take care of me. She was not someone who appeared to need any kind of care.
Maybe Haruka just that way, herself. Mina had seen, over the months they’d been roommates, that she was much softer than she put off. It wasn’t that she was stupid--she’d always known Haruka’s bravado was a front--but she’d taken it as a question of ego less than self-protectiveness, and on this she had found herself to be at least somewhat mistaken.
“That’s better,” Haruka said, tugging at the sweater she wore, “It’ll make you feel better.”
The reassurance, Mina thought, was maybe just as much for Haruka as it was for herself, but she appreciated it nonetheless, and the old couch, found on a sidewalk, was more comfortable with addition of a few pillows.
“I bet I look as grody as I feel,” Mina gave a wry smile, “No one’s paying today.”
Haruka laughed. “I mean...yeah, you look, kinda not great.”
“You can’t even lie for me?”
“I mean, I can try.”
Mina remembered not to shake her head. “Don’t hurt yourself, bud.”
Haruka stood up and hurried off again, back quicker this time with Mina’s hairbrush and a ponytail holder. She sat down near Mina’s head and settled herself in.
“Here,” she puled Mina’s hair back from the pillow, “Let me help”
“What are you gonna do?” she closed her eyes again, “Not exactly Vidal Sassoon, judging by your haircut.”
Haruka began to comb her hair, gently pulling at the tangles like Mina was a small child, her hair growing smooth beneath her touch.
“I’m really good at braiding! I used to wear my hair that way, till I cut it, basically every day. Besides,” she shrugged, “I dunno who Vidal Sassoon is, so doesn’t bother me.”
Mina looked up at the ceiling, feeling the strokes as they took the roughness and fight out of her hair. “When did you cut it?”
“I was thirteen,” She laughed softly, “Did it myself with a pair of kitchen scissors.”
“I bet you looked like a dreamboat.”
“Yeah, my mom’s boyfriend was sure to tell me how ugly I was, and she didn’t argue.” She touched lightly on the moment, and just as quickly fled from it, “Anyway, I’ve worn it short ever since, but you know, you never really forget how to do this.”
Mina was about to doubt her when she spread her hair out into three equal sections, looping them over and under with a quick flick of her wrist, a careful balance between too loose nd too restricting that seemed carefully learned.
“I used to do this for the other girls on the track team, if they let me,” Mina felt her shrug, “Some girls don’t like me touching them. You know, cause...obviously.”
“Not obviously.” She looked over her forehead to Haruka, a strange swell of protectiveness coming over her. “Fuck those bitches. Seriously. Bold of them to assume you’d want anything to do with them anyway. Bunch of gawky, awkward horsey girls.”
Another effortless twist. “Then I’m an awkward horsey girl.”
“You’re awkward emotionally. But at least you’re handsome.” she looked back at the ceiling. “And don’t say you aren’t, I make it my business to know what good-looking is. I don’t want to fuck you, but you’re definitely fuckable, Haruka.”
“Thanks, I think.”
She finished at the bottom of Mina’s hair and tied up the end with the holder, quicker than Mina herself had ever managed it. “Keep it out of your way.”
“You are good at that, I stand corrected.”
Haruka stood up. “Anyway, I’ll make you some udon noodles are something, and then I can leave you alone. I’ll go...to the arcade or something, no big deal.”
She turned to walk the short distance to their kitchen, adjusting her sweater.
“Hey, Haruka,” Mina lifted a hand, ignoring the pain, and grabbed the edge of her pants, “You don’t have to leave. We can hang out. Be nice to have some company.”
“Yeah?” she smiled, and Mina saw the strange glint of hope in her eyes.
“Besides,” she let her hand drop, “who else is gonna take care of me? Can’t exactly call Rei over here, even though she’d love to find me prone and helpless.” she affected a high pitched voice, “let’s paint our nails and talk about girls, Ruka.”
“Ruka,” she looked at the ground and chuckled, “Okay if you want me to stay, I’ll make us both some noodles,” the smile stayed on her face, even though she seemed to by trying to dull it, “we’ll--I mean all I have is like, nail clippers and--”
“Why don’t you just hang around and be my friend?”
Haruka beamed. “Yeah. I can do that.”
There was something clarifying about a good fight.

“I’m sorry to the fans of B1A4” CNU’s Last Interview Before Enlisting [ARTICLE TRANS]
This is a re-post from something I previously had on my tumblr. This is just the translation of the questions and answers. I don’t have the link to the original article yet with the pictures. I have obtained the original articles! Thanks to Shimybana04 on Twitter!
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3
Thanks!
- Marisa
[t/n: I just combined the 3 parts of the questions. The introduction parts were all basically the same]
Last year, idol group B1A4 went through a big change. Members Jinyoung (28, Jung Jinyoung) and Baro (27, Cha Sunwoo) left WM Entertainment after their contracts expired leaving CNU (28, Shin Dongwoo), Sandeul (27, Lee Junghwan), and Gongchan (26, Gong Chanshik) to be arranged into a 3-membered group.
Although it was a path chosen in order for them to develop themselves, but when seen from the viewpoint of the fans that have been cheering for them, there are many regrets. The members cannot ignore these types of feelings the fans have. And at their first fanmeeting as a 3-membered B1A4, held last month on the 5th, CNU stated, while crying, “I can’t repay what is owed to the heart even if I try to repay it for the rest of my life.” With a sorrowful heart, he was apologetic for being unable to keep B1A4 as 5 members as the oldest.
After the fanmeeting, CNU is enlisted in the military last month on the 22nd. He is the first B1A4 member fulfilling his duty and was preparing for the second stage of his life. Before his enlistment, Star News met with CNU for a ‘Let’s Have A Meal’ interview. It would be his last for the fans before the enlistment. We met CNU at in Seoul at a Korean-style full course meal restaurant as he felt grateful and apologetic towards fans as he thought about having to leave for a little.
How are you feeling right before you enlist in the army?
It feels surreal, a little complicated. There are times when I feel empty, uneasy, and even liberated. Of course I have to go, but as it gets closer, there are various types of overlapping emotions.
Is it a bit burdensome since you’re going later? [t/n: as in age wise]
Haha. Going late isn’t something to be proud of. As an artist, I have activities and unavoidable situations therefore rather than being burdened, I’m worried about the members. My biggest worry is about leaving the younger ones behind.
What kinds of things did you talk with the members about?
It’s more like we don’t really talk about the big thing. Haha. Still, they decided that they’d go with me the day that I do enlist.
When you look at the other celebrities that went to the army, there’s always talk about how they really miss girl groups. CNU-ssi, what girl group do you think you’ll miss the most?
Um…I’ll go with being a fan of Oh My Girl. I should take care of our kids. Haha. They’re popular in military units. Nowadays they’re becoming more popular and they’re also my company juniors. It’d be nice if they could visit, if possible…haha. But since I think that could possibly put pressure on them, I want to tell them that I understand if they can’t come.
How do you spend your time?
I’ve been busy recently and I think I’ll continue to be up until the day before I enlist. It was eventful for us last year, too. I was in a drama and more recently we were preparing for our fanmeeting. There is a fanmeeting in Japan scheduled for February, but I can’t attend because I’ll be in the army. We were preparing for various things. Since there was a little bit of a change to B1A4, we were preparing a lot of things in order to show fans a good image of us. We were seriously planning a lot of things.
Can you tell us about what you had planned?
There was the fanmeeting. I also thought that it’d be good if B1A4 were able to quickly put out an album. It’s been such a long time since we released an album. I’m really sorry to the fans for undergoing this change. I thought that quickly releasing an album would be a way to ask for a little forgiveness from the fans. I wanted to have an album, fanmeet, and even a concert.
A little while ago you held a fanmeeting as a 3-membered group. I figure that it would feel differently. You even shed a lot of tears…
Rather than it being anyone’s fault that B1A4 is in a situation where we have to continue as a 3-membered group, I think everyone shares responsibility. I think we should live while being apologetic to the fans. The 5 members are the ones directly in B1A4, but B1A4 isn’t just ours. There is the company that made us and also the fans. For someone out there, B1A4 being in their life could be everything to them and there could also be people who feel like we’re the ones who give them energy…I feel like we committed a great sin to those people. It’s not like I want to find out who did what, I’m just very sorry about this situation and I think I cried a lot.
I think those feelings would be bigger since you’re the eldest.
That’s right. There’s a sense of regret to it, like ‘If I had done a better job, wouldn’t it have been a better situation?’ I feel sorry towards the fans and the members. The fans who had come to the fanmeeting told me a lot of things like, “It’s not your fault, don’t feel sorry,” but I think I’ll have this apologetic heart for the rest of my life. I think I should have it for the rest of my life. Because we made a crack in their memories of us, I think I should pay it back in the future.
Your first activity after your contract renewal with WM Entertainment was a drama. You challenged your first project, SBS drama Miss Ma: Goddess of Revenge. How was it? [t/n: they wrote more like how Miss Ma is his first like drama role. He was in a previous drama, but that was a daily drama and is considered to be in a different category]
Just acting on TV is such a great opportunity for me. It’s a project that I’m very thankful for. The fans have also seemed to have wanted me to be in a drama. I’m really happy that I was able to have an opportunity to try it out. I was able to work with mostly everyone besides the children actors, so I was able to really learn a lot. I think that this project was able to lay the foundation for future growth.
In the past you’ve done a lot of musical activities before, is there a difference between that and acting?
There’s a difference either way. Some of the continuing habits that I have from musicals sometimes appeared when I was acting for TV. There were times when my seniors gave me advice on some of the technical stuff, like telling me to calm down my tone. And because Sung Jiru-sunbae and I were together a lot, he taught me a lot about the type of attitude that an actor should have and the type of skills while at the filming site. It’s a project where I really learned a lot.
How was your chemistry with your senior actors?
Kim Yoonjin-sunbae really looked upon me favorably. I’m really thankful. Because she hadn’t seen me as actor CNU before, I think she worried about how I would act. After the script reading, we went out for a company dinner and while we were there, she spoke to me first saying, “Your speaking and breathing are good, it’s clear that you’ve prepared a lot for this. I’m very grateful.”
I was even more touched because such a big senior had said that to me. She also taught me a lot about acting while we were on site. She acknowledged and liked me as a singer and has also monitored and listened to the songs that I have written. It was such a big opportunity for me to be able to share those things with my senior. There could be a prejudice by other actors for being an idol turned actor, but I’ve been acknowledged as an actor and singer. I’m very thankful.
You had a love line with Go Sunghee.
There’s only a one-year age difference between Sunghee-noona and I, but I think dropping the age difference between us made the love line more comfortable. She treated me very well. I’m thankful. It is a love line but it’s a bit of a disappointment that we hadn’t held hands or hugged. Haha. We said that we should do another project together. It was fun acting together because she has such an easy-going personality.
You and Bae Dohwan, who was also in drama, played a cop. Did you guys have any preparation beforehand?
One of my friends from high school is a real cop. As soon as I was casted I had called that friend and asked him detailed things like, “How do you salute?” or “Can you take off your hat when you’re in the station?” I think I was able to get information rather easily because of my real-life cop friend.
Together with Sandeul and Gongchan, after the contract renewal, I think that you guys would have become stronger together.
I think that it has. I have certainly become more concerned about things that I wasn’t concerned about before and as the eldest, I feel like there are more things I have to take responsibility for. We also see each other and contact each other more.
I’m curious about your reasons for renewing your contract.
From the very beginning I had no desire to leave. Of course there’d be complaints and misunderstandings since we were in this company for so long; however, no matter how I saw it, they grew us and it was because of this company that I was able to debut, so my feelings about renewing my contract grew. Even though I can’t promise to stay with them for the rest of my life, at least for this time I had wanted to renew my contract and stay together.
I don’t think the 5 of us thought the same thing. Although it’s something that the company knows now, at the time of our contract renewal, it wasn’t like I didn’t meet with other companies. There were good offers from many good companies, but in the end, I believe that it is with this company that I’m able to securely do the things that make my heart comfortable to my fullest extent. Sandeul and Gongchan also had that kind of mindset.
When you go to the army, who will you think about the most?
The fans is first place. I believe I’ll think about the fans the most. While I should also think about my family, friends, and members, of course, I think I’ll miss the fans the most. Even at our recent fanmeeting, seeing all of the fans gathered together and holding signs to cheer for us I thought, “There’s no greater blessing than this for me.” I don’t think I should ever forget about my gratitude for the fans.
What are your plans after you get discharged?
I feel like my time spent in the military is the second part of my life, it feels like I’m starting the turning point. Thus far in order for B1A4’s activities to go further, I feel like we have gotten onto the footholds and once I’m discharged from the army, I think we’d be able to fly and run stronger. I’ll also run step by step towards the planned things that I wasn’t able to do before enlisting in the army. I have a lot of debt for the fans’ hearts, so I have to pay it back, even if it’s just a little.
I want to release an album as soon as I’m discharged. So far there are about 8-9 songs that I have written. Sandeul also has written about 3-4. We have been worried about what direction our music should go in as we continue as a 3-membered B1A4. The songs that I have written while worrying about that is enough to fill a regular album. I think quickly finishing and releasing a B1A4 album after I’m discharged is my goal. I think with the first step being music, I’ll be able to let go of this apologetic feeling that I have towards the fans.

Leave No One Behind Ch 1: You Gotta Have A Plan
Co-Written with @icanfeelastormbrewing
Before you continue, we recommend you read this to introduce the ‘cast’- Leave No One Behind: Meet the Characters

Chapter Song: Across the Universe by the Beatles
“Images of broken light which dance before me like a million eyes, that call me on and on across the universe…”
“It takes three days.” Ethan began “You can… “Just a-- Hold on a sec.” Isaacs said as Ari dropped his hands to his hips, leaning back against the large cupboard he was stood in front of.
