The Demon Brothers: Creative Outlets Headcanons
they are all immortals and when you've lived longer than you can remember, you're bound to find a creative outlet to destress, alleviate boredom, or you know, to just have fun!
Lucifer
Heā€™s a busy demon. If heā€™s not working, he's sleeping, or cleaning up one of his brotherā€™s messes, so he doesn't have that much time to just relax and explore his creative sides.Ā
That said though, it doesnā€™t mean he has no hobbies at all.
He plays the piano. He used to play it every morning, back when heā€™s still in the Celestial Realm, when heā€™d taught Lilith how to play the piano every morning and sheā€™d sat besides him as his fingers moved across the keys slower so she could copy him.Ā
Nowadays, playing the piano feels very nostalgic and bittersweet, but youā€™ll hear soft, bittersweet melodies drift from the music room once in a while.
He also composes his own music, but that's an even rarer occurrence. The last time he created a new music piece was centuries ago.Ā
(Ever since MC came to Devildom though, he's been itching to write music for them.)
Practices calligraphy for fun. He has a whole set of brushes and ink and lettering pens. His handwriting is already beautiful but his calligraphy is even more amazing.
Another thing he does is gardening. He's got a great eye for landscape architecture, he's the reason why the house's backyard is pretty.Ā
He plants decorative plants and likes to cross breed flowers so the House of Lamentation's backyard is full of pretty shrubs and unfamiliar flowers.Ā
He is usually joined by Beel as he is the other brother that finds gardening very relaxing.
Mammon
He definitely shows his creativity by coming up with the most absurdly brilliant, out-of-the-box, original schemes to make money.
Mammon can draw, like really good. His drawings are very realistic. He prefers to use traditional media: charcoal pencils, graphite sticks, blenders, erasers, drawing pens, brushes, and maybe some watercolors.
He usually does architecture sketches.
But if you check his drawers, youā€™ll find several sketchbooks of his brothers in different candid poses. MC alone has taken up three whole sketchbooks. Mammon makes sure MC doesnā€™t see those sketches though.
Crashes Asmoā€™s Art Day regularly, claiming that if Leviā€™s invited then the Great Mammon should be too. Asmo and Levi always complains but they let him stay anyway.
Mammon also has a natural talent on jewelry making and metalwork. He makes jewelry from buttons, beads, pearls, diamonds, and crystals. From small pendants to elaborate neckpieces, simple anklets to ornate hairpins.Ā
Mammon has made metal bookmarks for Satan because the book lover always misplaces his bookmarks or destroys them in fits of rage when he doesn't like a book's ending.
He sculpts wood. It takes him months to finish one small piece because he only does it when he's really, really bored, he prefers to make his much more profitable jewelry.Ā
He keeps all of his sculptures in his room, small and detailed pieces of wood engraving of Devildom native animals lining up on one of the shelves.
Leviathan
This is canon but he draws! He doesn't think he's very good at it, but he really enjoys it.Ā
Unlike Mammon who likes to draw with his charcoal pencils and drawing pens, Levi prefers to draw digitally. He still switch to traditional media now and then though.
Has a monthly scheduled ā€œArt Dayā€ where he and Asmo hang out together, Levi draws with his sketchbook or his drawing tablet and Asmo paints. They basically just gossip and hype each otherā€™s art.
Dabbles in making short animations but feels like itā€™s just not something for him. He makes short comics though.
He wants to be able to make his own video game someday though. Maybe after he learns programming.
He makes the most detailed cosplay outfits for his own cosplays. He sews really good and patches his brothers clothes when they ask. Where do you think Asmo learns how to sew his own clothes from?
Really good at dancing and he really likes it too. He's a natural at it. From the most intricate traditional Devildom dances to freestyle dancing. He can make new moves on the spot and can copy any moves from one look.
Heā€™s a shy baby though, youā€™ll rarely see him dance when heā€™s sober.
Except when heā€™s playing DDR (Demons Dance Revolution). Then, itā€™s like heā€™s the most confident demon in Devildom.
Satan
Satan writes poetry when inspiration strikes him. He has also written short stories but he always comes back to creating beautiful poems. Heā€™s got a way with words.
Photography is something he has only recently taken interest in but he has a great eye for taking breathtaking shots.Ā
Has become the familyā€™s go-to photographer.
ā€œSatan, take a picture of me and Mammon!ā€Ā ā€œSatan, take our picture, quick!ā€Ā ā€œSatan, help me get a picture for my Devilgram!ā€
Heā€™s the reason Asmoā€™s Devilgram pictures always look like theyā€™re taken professionally in a photo studio or something.
Satan loves art, likes to stroll through museums and stare at paintings for hours, but has little talent in creating them. Even so, he still likes to paint even if he's not good at it.Ā
Sometimes he just wants to slap paint on a canvas and make a colorful mess. It's fun.Ā
He joins Art Day every other month.
Another thing he does is knitting! It relaxes him. It gives him something to focus at when he's angry (um, angrier than usual), just to give his hands something to do that doesn't involve breaking anything. The simple patterns he makes are easy enough that they don't frustrate him.Ā
Rarely ever finishes his knitting though, you'll just find this 5 meters long knitted fabric in one corner of his room with the ends coming undone because he calms himself down enough to stop knitting.
Asmodeus
Regularly designs, cut, and sew his own clothes.Ā
Has a lot of sketchbooks full of drawings of flowy dresses and stylish coats and many aesthetically pleasing shirts.Ā
He has started his own clothing line and sometimes collaborate with Majolish.Ā
But for the most part, he designs clothes for himself and himself only, he doesn't want anyone else to wear clothes as fabolous as his.
Nail art? Nail art.Ā
Asmo paints all of the brothers nails and sometimes he'll persuade one of them to let him do a complete manicure, with glitter polish and shiny studs and all.Ā
Yes, even Lucifer.Ā You just never see the results because Lucifer wears his gloves almost all the time.
Asmo creates beautiful makeup art. He doesn't really like a lot of makeup on his own face though, so his brothers' faces are his canvases.
He also has a great eye for interior decorating and flower arranging. He restyles his room every month.
Not many people know it but he paints. And he's very good at it. He has done a painting of each brother, the paintings can be seen on the walls of the House of Lamentation's hallways.Ā
Art Day with Levi (and sometimes Satan or Belphie) is spent with him in front of canvases, chatting with his brothers, paint splatters on his hands. It's the only day that he doesn't mind looking a little messy.
Beelzebub
He cooks, of course!Ā  And bakes too!
It's one of the times heā€™s willing to wait to eat because cooking the ingredients first rather than just straight up eating them will make the foods taste better.Ā
Half of the food in the kitchen are his creations. Anything he can make on his own from scratch, he will; jams, ice cream, sauces, juices, bread, chips, etc.Ā
Likes to experiment and always do something different than the original recipes.Ā
He garnishes his cooking like itā€™s something you order from a five star restaurant.
Beel is another demon who has a green thumb. He likes taking care of plants and doesn't mind getting a bit dirty doing it so gardening is another hobby of his.Ā
If Lucifer plants ornamental plants, Beel grows useful plants like herbs and vegetables and small fruits. He's also good at topiary.
Always has an idea for a DIY project.Ā
His creations is scattered all over the House of Lamentation. Belphie's drawer divider is made out of yogurt cups. Broken drawer knobs recycled into Asmo's jewelry organizer. The coat rack. The bathroom towel holder.Ā
Even Lucifer's hanging Demonus rack is handmade by Beel when he's bored one weekend, with Mammon's help for the engraving decorations along the sides of the rack. Beel's got a bit of Bob the Builder in him.
He is very good at singing. His voice is clear and he has a broad vocal range. Has been caught unconsciously humming in class many times.
Has definitely sang Belphie to sleep.
Belphegor
Does his pranks counts as a creative outlet though?šŸ˜‚ Between him and Satan, Belphie's ideas are the most creative and out of the box, resulting on some of the best pranks they did.
Belphie does origami. It's relaxing, easy enough to learn, and doesn't take much effort and energy to do it.Ā
Has stacks of origami papers in his room: standard origami paper, foil paper, traditional Washi ones, the leather-like Momigami paper, all kinds of paper.Ā
He especially loves to make little origami stars and keeps them in glass jars in his room.
Belphie also has adult coloring books.Ā
And kids coloring books.
Coloring is relaxing to him. It's very calming to just lay down and fills a page with pretty colors for a while. It's not a tiring way to destress, he can color without moving from his bed, and it feels satisfying when he finishes a whole page.Ā
He sometimes joins Art Day if he's not too lazy to move. Still prefers to color alone where it's quiet though.
He also journals. It's another thing he can do that is inexpensive and not energy consuming. He writes about anything that comes to his mind, his thoughts, his ideas, memories.Ā
Definitely keeps a dream journal.
Also I headcanon that as the Avatar of Sloth, sleep and dreams are some of the things he can manipulate. He enjoys creating dreams; the worldbuilding, the story, the details. He can be really creative when it comes to making them, spinning the most vivid and imaginative dreams.Ā
Theyā€™re not necessarily good dreams though. After all, he is still a demon, his dreams will most likely mess up your mind than make you smile in your sleep.

In which I go back over episodes 1-5 of Serial Experiments Lain in order to collect my thoughts on them before continuing on to a liveblog proper!
(this was done at butt-o-clock in the morning don't @ me for rambling/misspelling/etc)
Episode 1-
Lainā€™s shadow, and the shadows near her house, have an intensely weird pattern to them- like there's something hiding deeper within those shadows than any other shadows
The focus on humming powerlines, Lainā€™s asking them to be quiet- something/someone is trying to communicate with her, even this early on
The steam that comes from Lainā€™s fingers- at first I thought it was an intense imagination, but it felt similar to the steam coming from her computer in later episodes- another early sign that sheā€™s already in the Wired
ā€œWhy did you die?ā€ ā€œGod is here.ā€ the first mention of god in the show
As a whole Lainā€™s family seems off; her parents weirdly robotic, inhuman- almost monstrous in their appearances, and her sister distant; lain did not know them well, and so these simulations of them suffer
When another student dies by jumping in front of the transit train, lain has a strange experience of ā€œviewingā€ the studentā€™s death while surrounded by fog. I originally thought this was more of her powerful imagination, but having since connected the ā€œfogā€ or steam to computers, i think this was her simulating the event over again in an attempt to cope with her very human feelings
ā€œCome to the Wired as soon as you can.ā€ More communications from ā€œthe universeā€ to Lain
Episode 2-
the night scene at the beginning of each episode has been, mostly, a repetition of itself, with more communications; however, with Lain not present for most of them, who are they directed towards?
The girl in the nightclub Cyberia- looking at her again on a re-view, she does seem similar to Lain, but wears earrings- something Iā€™ve noticed the ā€œdigitalā€ Lain in the opening has that differentiates her from the more innocent, child-like, human Lain.
The explanation of Accel cuts to Lain in class- with the camera specifically focusing on her ear. It seems as if, throughout the show, sheā€™s learning certain information without seeking it out.
The first appearance of the digital ghosts, like what would become of the ā€œfakeā€ version of Lainā€™s sister in a later episode, plus the figure she ā€œimaginedā€ after the train slow-down.
The man with the gun high on Accel- a test for human-Lain? She freezes, drawing his ire, but when he recognizes her as the Other Lain and points his gun at her, she speaks in a different voice- possibly the Other Lainā€™s? Possiblyā€¦ a God-Lainā€™s voice. The man kills himself as if controlled by an outside force, and Lain appears shocked. I think that God-Lain- the one who has been communicating with Lain all this time- took over to ensure that Lainā€™s failure of this test wouldnā€™t lead to her death (or possibly, to interrupting her growth and forcing some kind of reset?)
Episode 3-
After the events of last episode, Lain is shaken- she can barely respond to Arisu. When she returns home, her family is nowhere to be seen- possibly because them existing during all of what happened would be detrimental to her growth? But when she falls asleep at her computer then checks on her family againā€¦ their presence or absence isnā€™t shown.
Another case of information about something strange- this time the Psyche- with a focus on Lainā€™s ear; again, picking up some kind of information.
ā€œWe saw someone die right in front of us yesterday, but weā€™re acting like itā€™s something we saw in a movie.ā€ lain's friends are the most fleshed out "people" in the simulation because she knew them the best- and that's why none of them could react properly to the murder in that club, because Lain had never experienced what their reactions would really be like to something traumatic like that.
Lainā€™s Psyche shows up in her locker- perhaps put there by God-Lain?
The first mention of The Knights, who may have created the Psyche. Are they possibly a front for God-Lain?
Lainā€™s father attempts to leave immediately when she shows him the Psyche- further evidence that he can only react how heā€™s ā€œprogrammedā€ to? The guy in the club who recognizes Lain- God-Lain has definitely been visiting here regularly.
ā€œI saw you once, in the Wired. You were totally different.ā€ God-Lain doesnā€™t seem to mind folks knowing about her. Is she leaving hints towards her existence for Lain on purpose?
Lainā€™s sister is definitely more fleshed out than her parents- when the Agents at the door try to tell her to ignore them she seems properly weirded out
Episode 4-
The origin of my connecting steam/fog to computing power- lain has a fan set up to directly cool part of her computer, releasing steam/condensation
Lainā€™s parents continue to have strange, robotic responses, but her sister seems genuinely concerned for her.
The main ā€œplotā€ of this episode- the crossing over of the two net games- seems mostly unrelated to Lain? But it does seem to be causing suicides and murders, showing direct interaction between the Wired and the ā€œrealā€ world
I love the speed with which Lain is acclimating to computers and the Wired- contacting a professional for assistance with the Psyche is a great detail
The more adult-seeming Lain- so, possibly, God-Lain- appears to ask the DJ at the club about the game. But, sheā€™s not there when he looks, and after that scene Lain has suddenly learned about and downloaded the game in question. Was it maybe Human-Lain tapping into her latent god powers to learn this information from him?
A Lain travels through the net game, and seems to try to contact a fleeing player. ā€œI canā€™t go where you are.ā€ The voice sounds much more like Human-Lain? Then the player encounters a child and kills her- seemingly in-game, but then one or more corpses can be seen wrapped in sheets afterwards as Lain watches. Highly unlikely that this guy had a real gun IRL- especially in Japan- so this seems to be more Wired/IRL fuckery.
ā€œMy buddies and I think this might be the work of the Knights too.ā€ A point against my theory of the Knights being God-Lain?
ā€œIā€™ll be able to enter it soon. ā€¦ Donā€™t worry, Iā€™m still me.ā€ ā€œSometimes, I wonderā€¦ā€ Yeah, thereā€™s no way this is a real reaction her real father would have.
ā€œThe Knights do not physically exist. They can be thought of as a religion that is spreading through the Wired.ā€ And then this quote feels like another point towards my God-Lain theory!
the two men who were spying on lain... I think might've been actual outside agents given representation so that human-Lain would have the chance to deal with them- which, she did, by tapping into her god-powers to destroy their spy-glasses (which, when she did, caused her computer's fans to go into overdrive to keep it cooled)
Episode 5-
Lain hears directly from a being calling itself God, before the episode jumps to focusing on her sister for most of the episode.
This episode felt like it was jossing my theory- how could this whole reality be for Lainā€™s benefit if her sister was experiencing strange stuff?
ā€œThere is nothing that you donā€™t know. I canā€™t tell you a story that doesnā€™t exist.ā€ On some level, Lain is both God-Lain and Human-Lain. These conversations with the doll, the mask, then fakes of her parents throughout the episode, seem to be more of Lain learning without personally experiencing- being fed information by her other self.
ā€œThe other side is overcrowded. The dead will have nowhere to go.ā€ Isnā€™t this straight up a quote from one of the Romero zombie flicks?
All the talk of prophecy and ā€œfulfill the prophecyā€... Lain seems to be on a set path towards entering the Wired, which is part of why it seems like this is just her reliving an approximation of something that already happened.
A connection between the Knights and The Prophecy. The fake of Lainā€™s sister isnā€™t the only one to encounter word of the prophecy, since we hear about it from Lainā€™s friends as well
Hmmā€¦ I hadnā€™t thought of it before, but, mayhaps the fake of Lainā€™s sister doesnā€™t show until the strange holo-effects of her water at dinner? None of the really weird stuff happens to her until afterā€¦ maybe this was a copy of her then, made during that moment before being pushed into this prophecy-horror scenario?
The Lainā€™s Sister who enters the house crying then sees herself disappears- or, it seems she does, until Lain sees a digital ghost of her, like she had previously seen in the schoolā€¦ after seeming to see this other self of hers, the real Lainā€™s sister seemsā€¦ robotic and nonchalant. Was she a full, real person before this happened?
Theory Overall thus far-
my theory thus far is that lain's already living in the wired, and is, in fact, a god there- she is both Lain and The Knights; but, the more human part of her, Lain, is reliving her pre-wired memories with slight alterations in order to help her get to the point where she can accept her godhood.
the opening of the show ties into my theory too- that god-Lain (portrayed in the intro with earrings) is spread throughout the world, controlling everything, while human-Lain (in her much more childish outfit) is just experiencing and trying to understand the world
Things that were pointed out to me-
Arisuā€™s name is a romanization of Alice (referencing Alice in Wonderland)
Be inc and Copland being old computer companies

Finding Us Chapter 21
Alright! Here I am at last with another Tim chapter! I hope you guys enjoy it.Ā
AO3 Link
~
Tim couldnā€™t deny the excitement bubbling up in his chest at the idea of progress in the stalker case. It fueled his desire to keep moving in other directions, while he waited on Damian to finish his sketch he dove back into work on the Alkali case.
Currently, he was trying once again not to backseat hack as Barbara was finally digging through the Alkaliā€™s files. After their trip to the physical location, Babs had used the access gained through Stephanie to create her own back door and theyā€™d sat on that for a little while to make sure no one found it.
It was early the morning after Damianā€™s encounter with the creepy man and Tim was in the belfry standing over Barbaraā€™s shoulder because there was nothing to currently do on the stalker case. Tim hadnā€™t recognized Damianā€™s sketch of the guy heā€™d seen, and so they were waiting on facial recognition to grab his identity. The kidā€™s sketch was definitely good enough for the system to pick something up, they just had to wait.
ā€œHave you found anything interesting yet?ā€ he asked, trying not to bounce on his toes.
ā€œLots. Nothing weā€™re looking for. Though, there is a guy here whoā€™s last name is Bandersnatch, which is pretty cool.ā€
She was teasing, but Tim could also hear the note of warning in her voice. When she found what they were looking for sheā€™d tell him, and he shouldnā€™t keep pushing. He sighed, and turned to step across the room, over to a mini fridge installed for snacks.
ā€œWant a soda?ā€ he called.
She shook her head, ā€œItā€™s too early for that, toss me a tea.ā€ she answered.
He grabbed a bottle of tea out for Babs and a can of orange soda for himself and moved back over to the computer.
ā€œThanks for helping on this.ā€ he said, handing her the tea, then cracking open his soda.
ā€œOf course, the sooner we get these guys the better.ā€
Tim agreed, and sipped at his soda while he played a matching game on his phone in an attempt to both distract and stop himself from tossing advice Barbaraā€™s way. He got stuck on a particularly difficult level and found himself totally lost in it for a while, trying again and again to win. It made the waiting a lot easier, even if he also kind of wanted to toss his phone out the window and watch it crash at the bottom of the building. Ā
ā€œGot something.ā€ Babs said at last.
Tim looked up bleary eyed, blinking away red diamonds and orange squares. It took his brain a moment to register what sheā€™d said before he stood up, the chair shaking.
ā€œGreat!ā€ he hurried over to look at the screen again, ā€œWhatā€™d you find?ā€
ā€œWell, under the private files I found some that were locked with a password, after cracking that I found these.ā€
The file sheā€™d opened was filled with unreadable text.
ā€œItā€™s encrypted?ā€ Tim asked.
ā€œI think itā€™s some kind of cypher. See it follows a sort of pattern. Nothing too overt or easy like a caesar cipher. Itā€™s got to have a key.ā€
Tim hummed, she was right, the text was filled with letters and numbers and broken up in a way that looked like lines of real text, if theyā€™d been in any kind of legible order.
ā€œWell then weā€™d better get to cracking it.ā€
They worked for a couple hours trying to figure out what cypher had been used, and testing various codes to no avail. Eventually they decided to give it some time to breathe, and their brains time to think of new ideas. Babs forwarded him the files so he could keep looking over them later and Tim left her to work on other projects.
As he was leaving, he found Cassandra waiting for him down at the base of the Belfry. She was eating a cinnamon roll like it was a doughnut.
ā€œHey.ā€ she said, handing him a cup of coffee, and shaking her wrist and the plastic bag hanging off it.
Tim took the offered cup, then tugged the bag off her free hand checking inside. A second cinnamon roll sat tucked into a nest of napkins. He fished it out, careful not to spill his drink then copied Cass, taking a huge bite out of the side.
It was still warm, and the taste of cinnamon and sugar danced across his tongue in a way that made him think of home. Of early Saturday mornings with Alfred, stirring together a bowl of butter, sugar, and cinnamon so the man could carefully spread it across dough. Or of Bruce dropping off a few in his room, ruffling his hair, and telling him he should probably finish his homework before working on another case.
ā€œReady to head back?ā€ she asked.
He washed down the bite of bread with some coffee and nodded, ā€œYeah, I think Babs and I have done all we can. Howā€™re things back at the manor?ā€
Cass shrugged, ā€œEveryone is still waiting on the results of the search, so they all split up to work on other things.ā€
They moved to the car Cass had brought to pick him up in, it was one of Bruce's many cars, black and not too fancy. Tim held a hand out for the keys and after an eye roll Cass dropped them in his palm.
ā€œI drove here.ā€ she argued.
ā€œYou drive too fast for me and my coffee.ā€ he replied.
ā€œFair.ā€ she shrugged.
As Tim pulled away from the clocktower, still munching on his cinnamon roll Cass pipped back up.
ā€œCan we stop at the craft store?ā€
He glanced at her, ā€œSure, but why?ā€
ā€œDamian wanted some more colored pencils. He sent a list and asked me to stop if I had time.ā€ She tugged a crumpled piece of paper out of her pocket and opened it to show him.
A detailed list of colors, brands, and what not to buyā€™s filled the page in Damianā€™s neat, tight, handwriting. Tim was surprised to find a little picture of a dog at the bottom of the page, it wasnā€™t as detailed as Damian usually did, and smiling for some reason.
ā€œHe drew it as a thank you, and promised to make me a better one with the pencils.ā€ Cass said, catching where Timā€™s eye had fallen, then she added, ā€œEyes on the road.ā€
Tim flicked the turn signal on the car to indicate he needed to go left, towards the craft store Damian frequented, ā€œWhy didnā€™t he come if he wanted to restock?ā€
Cass shrugged again, and folded the paper instead of crumpling it back up. She set it in her lap, fingers tapping on the paper with gentle tip taps.
Damian rarely missed a chance to get his own art supplies. He was as picky about them as Tim was over film or lenses for his cameras. Sure it was just a few replacement pencils, but even those Tim knew Damian would linger over for an hour if he was left to it. He wondered briefly if his mild concussion had anything to do with staying home. Maybe Alfred had told him he couldnā€™t leave? But no, it had been days at this point, he was probably cleared at last for most activities.
Maybe it was because he knew Cass was headed to pick up Tim.
He tried not to think too hard on that thought. They hadnā€™t really talked much lately. Both had been busy with their own things, and besides that, they didnā€™t really talk a lot to begin with. Heā€™d thought they were doing better, but at the same time Tim knew they werenā€™t.
Tim reached out to snatch his coffee and take a sip from it. Now that he thought about it, maybe they were doing better after all. Damian had called him by his first name the night before. And heā€™d gone looking for clues as to Timā€™s stalker. A queasy feeling bubbled up in Timā€™s stomach. Heā€™d been quick to dismiss Damianā€™s attempted apology back when theyā€™d been at the mall, and now he was starting to wonder if he'd been really trying to mend that bridge. T im loved the idea of having a little brother, and way back when he'd first met Damian he'd been happy to have one, for all of two seconds. Still, sometimes he thought they had found that perfect spot of being siblings, and other times it felt like there was a gaping hole between them. Especially lately.
He pulled into the storeā€™s parking lot not even realizing theyā€™d made it there, his body on autopilot. Cass cheered as she climbed out of the car, and Tim stayed quiet.
When he looked up at the storefront he figured it out.
He might be jealous. Of the squirt.
Maybe it wasn't their past that was bothering him so much lately, but their present. Tim thought he'd shaken off those feelings in regards to Jason and Damian, but maybe he hadn't. Even in the wake of the familyā€™s eyes turning on him Tim still couldnā€™t stop thinking about how Damian seemed to draw everyone in all the time. Dick, then Jason, Bruce with his fretting after theyā€™d gotten hurt. It was--it was like he fit in a way Tim couldnā€™t quite imagine himself fitting again. Ā Like they were both the same piece, and there was only one spot left on the puzzle, and Damian had swooped in just in time to fill it. Even now, he felt odd about the attention. Like the moment everything was done his family would stop looking at him again. Stop seeing Tim, because heā€™d messed up. Heā€™d failed to be the one to fix everything and he no longer deserved to be seen.
ā€œTim?ā€
ā€œComing!ā€ he said, locking the car door.
Inside he was hit with the smell of paint and paper. The whole place was a kaleidoscope of colors and supplies crammed together in a space that should have felt cluttered, but instead actually seemed homely. He followed Cass to the pencils and held each as she selected them, reading Damianā€™s list carefully, then making Tim double check ā€œ just in caseā€ .
He thought theyā€™d be in and out, but once theyā€™d found Damianā€™s stuff Cass insisted on browsing. Tim followed her, feeling a bit like Titus pattering after Damian as he instructed the dog on something very un-dog-like and soon his arms were full.
Cass had added extra packs of less high quality colored pencils, crayons, thin markers --not thick, because apparently those didnā€™t trace well-- and made him pick out a coloring book. She selected one full of animals, and Tim picked one that was more abstract. Like black and white stained glass. He and Cass locked eyes on an adult swear word coloring book and both grinned.
ā€œFor Jason?ā€ Tim asked.
ā€œAnd one for Dick.ā€ Cass grinned.
Soon theyā€™d selected adult coloring books for the whole family. Some simply because they knew theyā€™d get a laugh out of them, and others from the knowledge of the recipient getting genuine delight from it.
By the time they left, Tim was feeling better. His day brightened even more when Cass hooked an arm through his at home, and dragged him into the living room.
ā€œWe are going to color and watch She-Ra.ā€ she declared.
He could have argued and said he had work to do. But he knew Cass would tell him a break was good. And wasnā€™t that what heā€™d just told Babs? He could have fallen into other cases or dug out his 3Ds to play some Animal Crossing. But the best idea in the whole world right then was sitting on the floor and coloring with his sister, and he wasnā€™t going to pass it up.
He filled in two whole pages, first lined with marker --Cass had been right about the thin ones-- then colored in as dark as he could with his own box of colored pencils. At some point the sounds of She-Ra had been turned down as he and Cass chatted about everything.
She told stories of an adventure with Steph. He talked about Mindbender and how weird it was to have Jason in the house again. Then about how cool it was to have Jason in the house. Cass told him about a ballet sheā€™d seen. All of it, whether it was little nothings or big changes, ebbed and flowed to the scritch scritch of pencil on paper, and legs folded up or kicked into the air.
At some point, Alfred brought in cocoa and water. Then sandwiches. Dick breezed through and gasped over his book, stopping to color in all of an F before getting bored and breezing back out. Jason cackled over his book, and then genuinely thanked them for thinking of him. Damian collected his pencils, didnā€™t complain about a single one, and stared at his own book of animals to color like it was made of gold before tucking it under an arm and scurrying away.
Bruce stayed the longest, lounging on a couch to add his own commentary between theirs, infrequent, but enough to say ā€œIā€™m here, Iā€™m listening, I love you.ā€ before he too was called away. He planted a kiss on each of their heads before leaving.
It was Stephanie who broke up the peace. Showing up like a tornado, and stirring them from settled spaces into laughter. They traded pencils for controllers and fired up Smash Brothers for a wholly different, but still perfect, adventure.
There, surrounded in waves by his family Tim wondered if heā€™d been wrong earlier. If maybe the puzzle had room for all of them. And every time someone new came in, it just expanded and made room for them. He certainly felt like he fit in, and it was really nice.

Hi! this isnā€™t really drarry related but.... iā€™d really like to write fanfics, and i really like your fanfics and i like the way you write and everything... youā€™ve been one of my favorite writers for a long time... i was wondering do you have any advices for someone new to this? like what app do you use? how do you get your amazing ideas? how did you start writing? i think iā€™m bad at writing bc i donā€™t have a big vocab so...
Hello anon! Awww, thank you!
First of all, donā€™t worry about your vocab. Writing stories with a limited, easy to understand vocabulary is great! And if you want, say, Draco, to have fancier words, use a thesaurus to replace some words!
(or, look at your favourite fanfics and write down a list of your favourite fancy words)
Advice for people new to fanfic:
Just...write! And post! Donā€™t worry about plot. Try to write a single/simple scene, so that you can finish. If you look at my earliest stories, they were very short, because I was literally ā€œtestingā€ things out.
If you do want an easy plot, my favourite thing is ā€œ5+1ā€³ since you can just write it as six scenes.
That said, remember to check grammar and spelling! And make sure the HTML/formatting of your fic on AO3 is good. I think learning a bit of HTML goes a long way and I wished everyone writing fanfic on AO3 would learn it šŸ‘€ [but I may be biased due to my academic background]
Writing [style]:
Given that you must have read a fair number of fanfics already, go back and have a look at how your favourite ones are written. You might not be able to get how it was written (or like me, end up just reading it for enjoyment for the 10000-th time), but hopefully it would still inspire you!
Also, to be honest, my style of writing changes based on the kind of stories Iā€™ve been reading and really likely lately. For example, when I was writing The Standard You Walk Past, I had Lomonaaerenā€™s writing style at the back of my mind, which I striped down (reducing description, snappier dialogue etc) to suit my laziness.
These days, I like to write more crack/humour, leading to more ridiculous statements being made by characters and even shorter descriptions. My increased reading in long fantasy novels (Embers by Vathara, and xianxia/wuxia novels) has slowly increased my length of description again.
If you like my style of writing, I say do your best to copy! You can look at the (easier) things like:
how do I use dialogue tags
how do the characters talk
the amount of description
the length of my sentences
the size of my paragraphs
how I transition between scenes
[these are the things that Iā€™m personally aware of]
When it comes to ending a fic, Iā€™m personally a fan of looking back at the start of the fic and doing a ā€œmodifiedā€ scene at the end. i.e., now that Harry and Dracoā€™s lives have changed, what differences now exist in their lives? You can see this most clearly in Lost Among And Falling.
Ideas:
I get inspired by stories in two ways:
Stories that are so good, or do a trope that I really love, and I want to replicate that
Stories that are...not so good, or do something I donā€™t like, and so I want to reverse the trope
For example, in The Standard You Walk Past, the fact that Draco and Harry donā€™t speak and ignore each other for a while despite living in the same dorm room is a mini trope reversal. (Not that this was spite, but having something different is cool too.)
The Cake Is Ace is a huge trope subversion of ā€œbeing stuck in the closet together/party gamesā€, where Draco and Harry donā€™t do any kissing.
On the other hand, I adored smart Draco in shanastorytellerā€™s survival is a talent, and that partially led to Draco Malfoy Hacks The Ministry (along with the hacker/auror prompt due to quicksilvermaid)
In actual fact, a fair number of my fics are fest fics (Draco Tops Harry is my fave!), so the ideas are literally not mine. The main Drarry Discord also has an entire channel dedicated to free-for-all fic ideas!
How I started writing:
I started writing back in primary school šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ I think writing at that time is good, because you kind of just...donā€™t care about ā€œconventionsā€ and write whatever you like.
And then I started writing fanfic because I was reading fanfic šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚
(And Iā€™m writing more original fic because Iā€™m reading more original fic)
(And I used to draw more because I used to read a lot of manga. Thereā€™s a pattern šŸ˜‚)
Because I was reading fanfic, I often have thoughts of, but what if this happened instead [of what this fanfic author had written]. And sometimes there are niche ideas or tropes that I want to see more of, and Iā€™m not perfectly happy with what is out there so...gotta write it myself!
(Also, participating in fandom is nice)
So I say just make an account on AO3--and even post anonymously if youā€™re really testing out--and post away~ You can slowly learn how the posting-side of AO3 feels like this way. And of course, get some practice writing.
Software:
When I first started out, I was using LibreOffice Writer and Focus Writer. I also wrote some stories or sections by hand (e.g. Hold My Hand was written entirely by hand, and Life Is The Flower had sections of it written by hand).
Nowadays, I use Google Docs, so I can sync it across my two (!) laptops and my phone. And I use the AO3 posting script to paste things onto AO3.
Getting help:
If you are uncertain about your writing ability, you can find someone to read over your work before posting. If youā€™re on the drarry discord, or really many other writing or fandom discords, then itā€™s fairly easily find someone to beta your work!
And there are so many general writing resources out there.
*
Anyway, Iā€™ve basically told you all my secrets. I hope this helps!

Seen these ads? (Dress Up! Time Princess Review)
Tumblr media
This is primarily a dress up and interactive fiction game.
The storylines and character interactions are not as dramatic as the ads would suggest, the gameplay mechanics are different from what you see in the ads and it is not a ā€œmakeoverā€ game as some of the ads state. There are also a lot of other features in the game, although the primary focus is on dress up stages and interactive plot lines.
The characters are heavily ā€œElsafiedā€ as shown in the ads, but this is actually a much better game than one would assume based on how itā€™s advertised.
Tumblr media
Read my full review below:
***
***
***
šŸ‘ø Is the game still fun? Yes, it is fun! The game is very well fleshed-out, from the dress up system to the storylines and characters, and the graphics are very nice as well. The outfits especially are very pleasant to look at - the fabrics have texture and motion, thereā€™s a wide variety of items and you can even customize your own clothes with dyes and patterns and stuff unlocked along the way, which I donā€™t think Iā€™ve seen before in a game except maybe the Sims and Animal Crossing lol.
Tumblr media
The storylines are mostly based around historical events and fairytales which is pretty unique and makes for a surprising bit of edutainment - there are even little factoids throughout on different historical figures, locations, events and items etc. The decisions you make actually affect the story routes, endings and your relationships with other characters, and the characters themselves are well-developed with their own personalities and designs (although they are still Disneyfied/Elsafied designs.)
The characters emote and move throughout the dialog in a way that makes the stories more engaging, and the relationship system is really well-done; your decisions throughout the story effect your relationships and your relationship stats affect the story routes in turn. You can also improve relationships by giving characters gifts based on their individual preferences and you even get little letters and rewards from them as your relationships improve.
Tumblr media
The dress up stages are woven into the story, usually with you dressing up to attend an event or meeting with the stage objectives related to the type of event/meeting it is (formal, informal, outdoors, youā€™re trying to impress someone, youā€™re trying to appear humble etc.) There are even items based around the specific time periods and locations of the stories.
In addition to the dress up stages and storylines there are a lot of other things to do in this game - crafting, minigames, events and contests, side stories, pets and items to collect that can boost your points during dressup stages, etc. I would say thereā€™s almost too much to do, with a busy home screen covered in notifications that can be a hassle to go through if youā€™re like me and want to clear all your notifications before you do anything else lol. There are also a lot of different in-game currencies involved for different parts of the game which can be confusing. But the game gives you a good amount of guidance with tutorials explaining each feature along the way (and not thrown at you all at once), and if you can get past the sheer overwhelming quantity of things to do, you can either figure out how to organize and optimize your tasks, or just ignore the more complicated stuff and enjoy the main story stages/dress up aspects.
Tumblr media
I was really surprised by the quality of this game based on the spammy/clickbaity/fake ads and the fact that on its face it seems like something that would be geared more toward younger children. It still isnā€™t exactly my cup of tea since Iā€™m personally not that into dress up games and historical fiction, but I have to admit it was pretty enjoyable and impressive, and definitely something I would recommend to those who enjoy these specific genres.
šŸ‘— Is this a free game or a ā€œfreeā€ game? I would definitely consider this a free game, you can pretty much do everything for free and play for a long time without hitting a dead end. You need stamina to play the main story/dress up stages but this renews over time and the stages themselves are long enough that you might not even play enough in one sitting to run out of stamina completely. I personally never ran out of stamina, especially since I racked up a lot of extra stamina (I think from earning it from different tasks I completed along the way but Iā€™m not sure exactly where it came from).
Even if you did run out and had to wait to play more main stages, there are so many other things you can do in the meantime. And there are tons of opportunities to earn crafting materials, dress up items, experience and in-game currency, which lessens the pressure to pay in order to get more items or progress through the stories.
Tumblr media
Probably best of all is that there arenā€™t paid choices in the storylines, unlike in a lot of other interactive fiction/visual novel games, where more favorable/consquential options require premium currency to make.
šŸ•° Features
There are a ton of different features in this game but Iā€™ll try my best to list the ones I remember.
Dress up stages (you put together an outfit using clothing items/accessories in your inventory, and earn more points for higher-rated items as well as items with attributes that match the stage goals)
Storylines (there are different ā€œbooksā€ to choose from with their own themes, plots, characters and dress up stages, which are mostly based on history or fairytales with the overarching plot being that your character is a time traveler who can travel into storybooks and take on the role of a historical figure/protagonist, kind of like a ā€œpast lifeā€ thing. Your character is always female and you can customize their facial features, skintone and base hairstyle but not their name since it will always be the name of whatever main protagonist youā€™re taking the role of. Each book is pretty long with dozens of stages and you unlock them with tickets you can earn from progressing through other books; there are also a few shorter stories or spinoff stories from the main books that cost less tickets)
Tumblr media
Character relationships and interactions (with each main book comes a set of main characters called ā€œcompanionsā€ with their own personalities and preferences, who you can build your relationships with through story choices, giving them gifts they like and other interactions. You can get letters and rewards from them as your relationship stat increases and thereā€™s also something called ā€œencountersā€ where you make a choice based on a single line of dialog from a companion or generic NPC and get a reward, but I donā€™t think this affects the relationship stat. There are romantic plot lines but I donā€™t think thereā€™s a separate stat for romantic relationships, it just comes out through the narrative/dialog. Iā€™ve only played partly through one main story so far so I donā€™t know if your love interests are always male or not.)
Tumblr media
Crafting (you can use materials and blueprints earned by completing stages and other various tasks to craft dress up items and gifts to give to companions)
Gacha mechanic (thereā€™s a gacha mechanic where you get free draws each day to get crafting materials or dress up items. You can pay other currencies for more draws with guaranteed rare items.)
Friends/community (you can make friends with other players and gift them stamina and friend points which can be used for draws in one of the gacha pools. You can also borrow dress up items from friends to complete dress up stages, although this costs in-game currency. Thereā€™s also a global chat and other public chat rooms, and you can chat with or message your friends.)
Avatar and customization (You have a main customizable avatar displayed with the storyline dialog that you can also dress up with any of the items you own for a photobooth type thing, where you can make images of them in different poses to share on social media or what have you. You can also customize some clothing items using dyes, patterns and stamps youā€™ve unlocked and use those to dress up your avatar. The customized items can also be used in stages though Iā€™m not clear on whether customization affects your performance or is only for visual effect.)
Tumblr media
Events, minigames and contests (There are countless events going on at any given time, including log-in events, contests, puzzle/arcade minigames and more. These provide an abundance of opportunities to earn crafting materials, dress up items, in-game currency etc., pass them time while waiting for stamina to refill or overall engage with the game community.)
Tumblr media
Pets, relics and research (I havenā€™t explored these part very much but you can get pet cats that can be attached to outfits to boost their stats and be sent out on missions to passively bring in rewards over time. Relics are another type of point-booster for dress up stages and research can be done on categories of dress up items to increase the points they yield.)
Edutainment (thereā€™s a ā€œmemoriesā€ area where you can read through the different historical facts and trivia youā€™ve come across throughout the storylines)
āš–ļø Ad Honesty Rating: 2/5 (the ads rely on overdone tropes and melodrama, and blatantly copy from other games/game ads. For example the ads where her eyeliner is all smeared are basically the same exact ads used for Project Makeover. The art style and basic gist of the gameā€™s genres are relayed through the ads, but they scarcely include real gameplay and really donā€™t do the game justice.)
āļø Overall Rating: 5/5 (other than the game being overly busy and having an Elsafied art style, thereā€™s not much else to complain about, and thereā€™s a lot of great stuff going on here. The visuals especially really caught my attention and the complex storylines and ability to play for free unhindered really make it a 5/5 for me. Overall one of the best games Iā€™ve reviewed so far even if itā€™s not my personal genre preference.)

I Regret Buying PokƩmon Shield
I told myself I wouldnā€™t do it. Iā€™ve seen time and again the lack of innovation from main-series PokĆ©mon games, and I insisted nothing would convince me to buy this latest atrocity. Yet here I am, reviewing the game I said Iā€™d never purchase. I should have listened to myself. I KNEW BETTER! Strap in, ā€˜cause this oneā€™s pretty long.
PokĆ©mon has been around for a long timeā€”like, a long, long timeā€”and Iā€™ve been around for every single new main-series game thatā€™s been released since the franchiseā€™s first arrival in North America back in 1996 with Red/Blue. I was not yet 10 years old, and I still remember the childlike excitement of finding rare, never-before seen creatures, the stress of trying to catch a wily Abra or elusive Pinsir, and the challenging first encounter with the Elite Four and the Champion, a 5-man gauntlet of trainers with powerful PokĆ©mon rarely (if ever) seen in the game prior to that moment. It was exhilarating in a way that keeps me coming back for more, hoping to rekindle those same flames of wonder.Ā
While the main gist of the games hasnā€™t changed much over the years, one of my favorite parts of playing a new PokĆ©mon game is seeing the improvements each game brings to the series. Many of the initial sequels made huge leaps in progress: Gold/Silver introduced a plethora of new mechanics like held items and breeding; Ruby/Sapphire introduced passive abilities and was the first to include multi-battles in the form of double-battles; Diamond/Pearl was the first generation capable of trading and battling online and brought us the revolutionary physical/special split so elements were no longer locked into one or the other. These changes all had significant impacts on how players approached battles, formed their teams, and used each PokĆ©mon.
Those changes, combined with the addition of new PokĆ©mon to catch, regions to explore, and enemies to fight, were enough to keep me interested. But I know I wasnā€™t alone in imagining all the possibilities of taking the franchise off the handheld platforms and moving the main series games over to a more powerful home console. In the meantime, each generation that followed Gen IV highlighted a new, troubling pattern that became more and more prevalent with each addition to the series.
1.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā  Gen V: Lack of meaningful gameplay innovation
By Generation V with Black/White, not only was Game Freak quickly running out of colors, they were quite obviously running out of ideas for significant gameplay innovation. The bulk of Black/Whiteā€™s biggest changes were improvements on or adaptations to existing staples to the franchise: many new PokĆ©mon, moves, and abilities were added, and the DS platform allowed for greater graphical quality where PokĆ©mon could move around a bit more on-screen during battles, the camera wasnā€™t as rigid as it had to be in previous games due to machine limitations; perhaps most importantly, they FINALLY decided to make TMs infinite. Thank goodness. While the updates were nice, they were nowhere near as impactful on the game as previous generationsā€™ changes were and served more as needed quality of life adjustments.
I would also argue Gen V also had the least inspired PokĆ©mon designs (like Vanillux and Klinklang) with the worst starter choices of any PokĆ©mon game, but thatā€™s a discussion for another time. Excadrill and Volcarona were pretty cool, though.
Ā 2.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā  Gen VI: Gimmicks as the main draw
PokĆ©mon X/Y (See? They ran out of colors) continued this new downward trend in innovation. Mega-evolutionā€”while admittedly pretty coolā€”wasnā€™t enough to carry the new generation into an era of meaningful improvement because it was equivalent to adding new PokĆ©mon rather than developing innovative gameplay, ushering in a new era of gimmicks in lieu of substantial updates.
Though the gameplay innovation for X/Y was minimal, the graphic updates were substantial: PokƩmon X/Y was the first generation to introduce the main series to a fully 3-dimensional world populated by 3D characters. However, since X/Y was on the 3DS, it was a ripe target for the 3D gimmick seen in almost all games on the console, which I personally used for all of 5 minutes before feeling nauseous and never using the function again.
Despite the fresh look of the new 3D models, the battle animations were, to be frank, incredibly disappointing. PokĆ©mon still barely moved and never physically interacted with opponents, nor did they use moves in uniquely appropriate ways. To my point, for years now thereā€™s been a meme about Blastoise opting to shoot water out of his face rather than his cannons. I was sad to see that they didnā€™t take the time to give each PokĆ©monā€™s animations a little more love. But I figured, in time, when or if the franchise ever moved to a more powerful machine, they would be better equipped to make it happen, right? I also convinced myself that the lack of refined animations were kind of charming, harkening back to the gamesā€™ original (terrible) animations.
Ā 3.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā  Gen VII: Focus on Minigames
The main innovation (gimmick) that came with Generation VII, Sun/Moon, was the lack of HMs in lieu of riding certain PokĆ©mon. Sun/Moon also added Ultra Beasts (essentially just new PokĆ©mon) and Z-moves (just new moves) which only added to the number of gimmicks present in the games. These changes, which provide some mild adaptations to gameplay from previous generations, donā€™t fundamentally change the way players go through each game, the way that updates in the earlier generations did. I personally played through the entirety of Sun/Moon without using a single Z-move or seeing a single Ultra Beast outside the one youā€™re required to fight to progress the main story. Ultimately, these changes were not a significant enough experience to warrant an entirely new game that is otherwise full of more of the same stuff with slightly different creatures who have slightly different stats and occupy a slightly different world.
Though Sun/Moon was comfortably embracing the franchiseā€™s affinity for gimmicks, it brought to the forefront yet another troubling trend: mini games. Between photography, the Festival Plaza, and PokĆ© Pelago, the focus on and attention to detail toward mini games had grown considerably over the years. PokĆ©mon games have always had minigames and other time-sinksā€”which is great! Donā€™t get me wrong, I appreciate having more to do than trudge through the main story. But it is apparent that, with each new generation, more time seems dedicated to development of these extras. PokĆ©mon Contests, Secret Bases, Super Training, feeding/grooming; a lot of their larger innovations after Gen IV were centered on non-essential parts of the game, which results in diminished game and story quality overall.
Admittedly, Sun/Moon did have some of the best exploration moments of any of the PokĆ©mon games, which I did very much appreciate. More on that later as it relates to Sword/Shieldā€¦
Ā 4.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā  Generation VIII: You Canā€™t Be Serious
When Game Freak finally announced they were launching Generation VIII, Sword and Shield, on the Switch rather than a dedicated handheld console, I was beside myself with excitement.
And then I saw gameplay footage like this, and my heart sank.
What is the purpose of launching the game on a stronger console if they are going to continue copy/pasting their sprites and their animations? If they arenā€™t going to provide the PokĆ©mon any unique flair or create more appropriate animations? It was disappointing enough seeing the same animations/models from X/Y for Sun/Moon, but that was sort of expected since the games were on the same console. But now that the game has moved to the Switch, this is unacceptable.
When I learned that they were significantly cutting the number of PokĆ©mon available in the game, I thought for certain that would translate to more time dedicated to the ones that made the cut, to focus on adding animations and character to the critters to make them feel like real parts of the world, rather than avatars of a childā€™s imagination, unable to fully process how the world functions. Alas, what was I thinking?
I thought the Dynamax gimmick would be one of my biggest gripes because itā€™s so pointless, or maybe the Wild Areaā€™s severe lack of organic belonging (all PokĆ©mon are just wandering aimlessly, weather can change drastically after crossing an invisible line, trees look like they were cut and pasted out of Mario 64, you canā€™t even catch PokĆ©mon if theyā€™re too high a level) but honestly the most disappointing part of the game for me was the pitiful routes between towns/gyms. Previous installments of the game included routes full of trainers and puzzles you needed to defeat or solve before you could progressā€”in Sword/Shield, the only thing that ever prevents you from progressing are some Team Yell grunts barricading paths the game doesnā€™t want you to take yet, for literally no reason. It completely removes player autonomy and a sense of accomplishment earned through overcoming challengesā€”now instead of learning that you need to find an item that allows you to cut through certain trees to gain access to new areas, you simply follow the story beats and then, upon returning, the path will be open. Itā€™s inorganic, itā€™s clunky, and itā€™s extremely lazy.
Speaking of lazy, the story itself was another massive disappointment for me. PokĆ©mon games are not particularly known for having deep stories, but Sword/Shield takes it to a new low. Every NPC simply pushes you to battle in gyms, and every interesting story beat that occurs happens just outside the player-characterā€™s reach. Any time something interesting happens, you are shooed away and told to let the grown-ups handle it while you just get your gym badges. There COULD have been some interesting story moments where your character gets more involved with helping fix the havoc occurring around the Galar Region, but instead we as the player are simply TOLD what happened, why it happened, and who fixed it (usually the champion, Leon).
I honestly think having the game focus on the story of Sonia, Bede, Marnie, or even Hop (was not a fan of this kid) would have been a much more interesting game, because those characters actually had some depth to them, some bigger reason for taking on the gym challenges than simply ā€œI want to be the very best.ā€ Albeit those stories would have required a tremendous amount of work to add depth and details, the potential for a better story is in those characters. There is just no story at all to the main character, who is ushered from gym to gym becauseā€¦because? Because thatā€™s what kids do? Iā€™m not even really sure what the motivation is.
There are SO MANY exciting, interesting, innovative ways Game Freak could drive PokĆ©mon into a new and exciting direction while still maintaining its charm and building on existing mechanics, but they instead choose to demonstrate their lack of interest in significant graphical and gameplay innovation. I imagine this is largely because the masses will eat up just about any PokĆ©mon product produced so long as thereā€™s a new bunny to catch, and Pikachu is still involved. Iā€™m disappointed, and I wish the Galar region could meet the expectations of my 10-year old mindā€™s imagination.
When abilities were added, we suddenly had to consider whether our Earthquake could even hit the enemy Weezing and adapt to the tremendous changes the passive skills added, reconsidering how we faced each battle. When the physical/special split occurred, entirely new opportunities opened up and certain PokƩmon who were banished to obscurity due to their poor typing and stat distribution, like Weavile, were suddenly viable. Some even became incredibly powerful, like Gyarados, who had been hit pretty hard by the Special attack/defense split. There were also already-powerful PokƩmon (Gengar, Dragon-types) who became even more so through access to STAB moves that benefited off their strongest stats.
I want new games to include updates that feel as impactful as these changes. If youā€™re interested in how Game Freak can improve on the main gameplay, I have some fun ideas that will be fleshed out in another article: How to Breathe New Life into the PokĆ©mon Franchise. That article will be dedicated to explaining what those changes are, why I want them, and how they can improve future games.

Dear Stranger Series Ch. 7: Scavenger Hunt(Spencer Reid x Female OC)
Chapter 1Ā
Chapter 2
Chapter 3
Chapter 4
Chapter 5
Chapter 6
Warnings: Depictions of violence by unsub, sexually suggestive behavior, fluff
Ā A/N: This was my favorite chapter to write because this is where this story originally started for me and I hope you all enjoy it.Ā
Tumblr media
Spencer had been having trouble sleeping the past few days. He had big plans to make but wasnā€™t sure where to start. So here he was at three am trying to make coffee quietly, not waking Melinda. A ring is the first place he should start because he hasnā€™t even been to a store to start looking at rings. For that heā€™ll need to wait for a day off that will hopefully not be interrupted by a case. And even with a day off he needs to find a way to get out of the house without having Melinda question it. Maybe he could have Emily, JJ, or Penelope help him. No, that would never work, none of them can keep a secret. Heā€™ll just have to figure it out himself. He spends the early hours of the morning pondering what to do next. Not noticing the time he has spent formulating his plan until Melinda walks into the kitchen. ā€œHow long have you been up?ā€ She asks groggily. ā€œUh.. just a few hours couldnā€™t sleep.ā€ He says as he wraps her in a hug. ā€œYou know you could wake me up. I'm great late night company and you might have a better chance at going back to sleep.ā€ She responds nuzzling into his chest. ā€œItā€™s alright if I wake you up then we would both be exhausted at work.ā€ They begin going about their usual morning routine making more coffee and a light breakfast before showering, getting dressed and heading out.Ā
Arriving at the office they donā€™t have much down time before they are whisked away on a case. Not even having gone into the briefing, they would be briefed on the plane. There had been multiple male bodies found in some remote woods in Washington. During the discussion on the plane Spencerā€™s mind drifts off back to the plan he is currently putting together maybe if they can get through the case quickly he would have time when they got back. Or if there is any free time he can try going to a jewelry store in Washington but then someone on the team could notice and ā€¦ "Reid?...Reid?!" Hotch is calling out to him. "Yea sorry about that." "Is everything alright?" Hotch asks, seeming concerned. "Yeah did you know getting lost in thought or "zoning out" is actually quite common. The regions of the brain that become active during mind wandering belong to two important networksā€¦. Researchers say a wandering mind may be important to setting goals, making discoveries and living a balanced life..." Spencer is rambling on. "Ok Reid, I just wanted to make sure everything was ok." Hotch says. Everyone is given their buddy assignments for when they land. Hotch, JJ, and Melinda are going to the police station, Rossi and Emily to the disposal site, and Reid and Morgan to the morgue. "So what was that all about earlier?" Morgan asks on the drive to the morgue. "What do you mean?" "I mean you totally just checked out on the plane. Are you sure everything is fine?" "I really wish people would stop asking that. I said I was fine." Spencer says in a huff. Morgan figures it's best to just leave him alone for now. When they get to the morgue the five victims that have been found so far all show the same pattern multiple stab wounds pre and post mortem but the cause of death for all was cyanide poisoning.
Ā The team determined that this unsub was a "black widow" killer that had been killing one victim a year over the course of at least ten years based on the other bodies that were found. They were now trying to find a connection between the victims to find the unsub. Ā
Four days later they had finally caught the unsub. She was a thrill seeking psychopath luring men in with her looks and then trapping and torturing them for a year before repeating the process. The team was happy to be done, the case dragging on and taking its toll on them all. On the flight home almost everyone is asleep except Spencer. In the minuscule amount of spare time they had with this case he finalized his plans and would set everything up as soon as they arrived home. Finally arriving back at the apartment everyone agreeing the paperwork could wait, Spencer waited for Melinda to fall asleep before getting up and getting everything ready.Ā
The next morning when Melinda wakes up Spencer isn't in the bed again. She really needs to get him to talk to her about what's bothering him so he can get some rest. She gets up and heads to the kitchen where she had been finding him every morning. But this morning he isn't there. She can smell the coffee which means he was here, on the counter is her favorite mug with a sticky note attached. "Running errands will be back later. I think we should have a date night." - S. He is rather strange at times but it's just added to the list of the reasons she loves him. She pours herself a cup of coffee. Since she has her own errands that need to be done she might as well get it out of the way while Spencer's gone. She needs to pick up last week's dry cleaning, drop off this week's dry cleaning, stop by the pharmacy and go grocery shopping. After showering and gathering up everything she will need she is out the apartment door locked behind her.Ā
Spencer was thankful to know his girlfriend so well that he could figure out her course of action if he was gone. Once she leaves the apartment he goes back in to set up his surprise.
Arriving back at the apartment in the late afternoon Melinda is surprised Spencer isn't back yet. There is another post-it on the door "You must go on adventures to find out where you truly belong." - Sue Fitzmaurice She had no idea what he was up to but it seemed like it would be fun. Under that post it lay another "Some take me in the morning, others in the evening, but one thing you should know, that when I'm "taken" I don't go anywhere." And now there are riddles, she likes riddles and he knows that, even if this one is simple she'll play along. After putting the groceries away, she goes to the shower since that is where the next clue will be. On the bathroom mirror sits another note "When I put on my clothes it takes off its clothes. What is it?" She laughs walking into the closet, a hanger, but what exactly is she looking for? Behind the closet door that leads to the bedroom is a garment bag hanging. Now that wasn't there earlier and on the floor lies a shoe box. She unzips the bag to reveal a beautiful dress, one she hadn't seen before and she assumes the shoes in the box are a match. This game he has set up is becoming more fun by the minute. She takes a shower, puts up her hair, and applies light makeup before slipping into the dress and sliding the shoes on. At the bottom of the shoe box is the next clue "Some visitors pause here and strangers announce their reason. Things that decorate me can indicate a season." Ā Heading to the front door thinking he had to at the door. But she is wrong, he isn't there but had to have been recently, sitting at the foot of the door is a vase of sunflowers that were not there when she arrived home. "A necessity to some, a treasure to many, I'm best enjoyed among pleasant company, some like me cold, some prefer mild, some like me bold." Ā Melinda heads into the kitchen checking around the coffee pot but there are no other notes, maybe a mug she thinks going through the cabinet. Okay so it's not in the house she grabs her purse heading to the coffee shop they frequent down the street. She isn't really sure what she should be looking for and they are never here this time of day so she doesn't recognize any of the workers. Maybe if she orders something they will give her the next clue. "Melinda!" She hears someone shout "Small coffee for Melinda!" She hesitates for a moment before walking over. "Um I'm Melinda but I didn't order this." "Oh I know some really handsome fella came in and paid for it." She says handing the coffee over to her. At this point she is appreciative of the coffee, this was quite some adventure he had her on. The note affixed to the top of the coffee reads, "A pile of words, jackets of hordes, take a quick look in a place of books." That one was by far the most obvious clue. She exits heading to the library. As she walks drinking her coffee she thinks of all the times Spencer and her had taken this walk on a morning off, she enjoyed anytime they had together. Arriving at the library she tosses her empty cup before walking in. Once inside she isn't sure where she should be going. Nothing draws her attention, no one is looking around expectedly so she just begins to walk around following the same route her and Spencer always take. She rounds the corner and that's when she sees it, another note. Maybe she should change her routine and not be so predictable. "A heart is not judged by how much you love; but by how much you are loved by others. - L Frank Baum (The Wonderful Wizard of Oz) she knew exactly where this was leading her. Heading towards the section and finding the only copy of the book she pulls it off the shelf. "If an adventure is what you want, take a look, open a book" inside the book awaits the final note simply reading "turn around". When she turns around, down on one knee ring in hand is Spencer. "Melinda, I love you more than I thought possible, would you join me on the greatest adventure and marry me?" Failing to hold back tears, in barely a whisper "Yes".Ā
The next morning waking up for the first time in two weeks with Spencer by her side. She smiles leaning over to place a gentle kiss on his cheek. Her movement makes him stir slightly as he moves closer to cuddle. His face in the crook of her neck he returns the kiss, "Shouldn't you be sleeping." He says in his scratchy morning voice. "You can't really expect me to sleep. I'm so excited I don't know how to contain it." She giggles out. She had been playing with the ring since he placed it on her finger, it felt so surreal. "Well if you're not going to sleep there is something else we could be doing." He says placing more kisses on her neck, moving down to her breast. But just as quick as their activities had begun they halted because the phone was ringing off course. Garcia called them in for a new case. Both groan in frustration sharing a few more kisses before separating to get ready and go into work. Arriving at the office everyone has the same look on their face, the why can't we just have two consecutive days off for once look. Spencer and Melinda were so caught up in the mornings frustrations they forgot about their recent engagement until Rossi came up to congratulate them. "Congratulations on what exactly?" They both ask. Rossi's comment had alerted the team to them immediately. He gestures to the ring on her finger. "Oh yea, thanks." Melinda beams out joy flowing through her. "Almost forgot about that after that phone call this morning." They are met with a sea of congrats. Emily and Penelope are already arguing over who gets to be maid of honor and asking if they already had a date in mind. The BAU family was hectic but it was home and they were excited to see what new adventures await for them

Why Space Channel 5 is one of SEGAā€™s best dumbestĀ games ever, no questions asked. (Report 1 & 1/2.)
Tumblr media
Space Channel 5 on the Dreamcast is one of my favorite things ever, let alone favorite video games. Though I more often watch it on YouTube then actually play it.
For those not in the know, Space Channel 5 is a game seriesĀ developed by United Game Artists and published by parent company SEGA. And thatā€™s the most Wikipedia quoting Iā€™m gonna do in this gush piece.
There arenā€™t many games quite like this rhythmic, Simon says game. At least in style because this game has that in spades, the gameplay anyone can do. And I am not at all qualified to explain its style because I wouldnā€™t how to describe it as besides maybe very 70s?
Point is thereā€™s something charming about this game, and I think SEGA agrees with me on that. The lead character, Ulala (seen above), appear in these games to name a few years after new Space Channel 5 games stopped being made after 2002:
2004: Sega Superstars
2006:Ā Sonic Riders
2008: Sega Superstars Tennis and Samba de Amigo
2010:Ā Sonic & Sega All-Stars RacingĀ
2012:Ā Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed andĀ Project X Zone
2015:Ā Project X Zone 2
And not to mention the invading aliens have been skins of the titular Puyo Puyo in that series for a while I canā€™t determine. Possibly since at most 2007 up until current day with Puyo Puyo Champions in 2018/2019.
ALSO not to mention the VR game that came out recently! (How could I forget that? Thatā€™s the main reason Iā€™m doing this.)
So it is clear SEGA loves this game and itā€™s sequel a lot. I donā€™t think their most beloved cult classic NiGHTS: Into Dreams gets that much love from the company though it certainly does get a lot itself, most games wish their parents still loved them that much long after they had a game. Anyway...
Now the part where I actually talk about the game.
I wanna say, first and foremost. This is not a review of the game. This is just gushing about why this game makes me happy.
And everything Iā€™m gushing about is just what you get from the from one playthrough of the game. Save for one exception, I will not be talking about supplementary material, nor Space Channel 5ā€²s lore.
And yes, this colorful dancing/rhythm/simon says game has lore. Basically any non-repeated character model has their own biograph. So I will not go into that.
Youā€™re not missing too much, there are interesting tidbits, sometimes they fill you in on background details of the story.
Speaking of the story. Iā€™ll start in a second. But if this is new to you, you can watch it here first (The first playthrough is only half the video):
youtube
Prologue:
Tumblr media
We start off with a bunch of alien sitting on a space couch watching space TV. These aliens are known as the Morolians and theyā€™ll be the main antagonists for the evening.
This cutscene has no dialogue, so this is all open to interpretation for a first time viewer. Though I do enjoy this split second foreshadowing:
Tumblr media
And thatā€™s when the title screen appears. Blasting you with the seriesā€™ main theme Mexican Flyer. Look it up if you must. Youā€™ll be hearing it a lot, itā€™s the game and Ulalaā€™s leitmotif.
Tumblr media
Report 1: This is terrorism attack on an airport... Iā€™m gonna ignore that.
This is the only piece of supplementalĀ material Iā€™ll talk about, as itā€™s present in the game itself, but not elaboratedĀ on, and it is important to two of the character.
The game starts in a flashback. In the year AD 2489 a spaceship exploded. Everybody on board died safe for a little girl.
Tumblr media
She was rescued by a man working for Space Channel 5. A news organization that with a specific focus on dancing. That last bit is nothing special though, as everything in this galaxy revolves around dancing.
Tumblr media
After the little girl is saved by this kindly Channel 5 Gent (Age 25) she knew what she wanted to be after she grew up. She wanted to be a sexy dancing reporter for Space Channel 5 just like him (presumably). And to meet him so she can thank him in person.
10 years later......
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is AD 2499! And the Morolians attack a space airport and their ray beams hypnotize people to dance silly.
THE HORROR!
And thatā€™s when Space Channel 5 sends in Ulala to report on the progress.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But what theyā€™re actually doing is for Ulala to solve the problem instead of the Space authorities.
One character I do wanna mention now is that Ulalaā€™s producer, Fuse, is an unseen character yet is important later. Heā€™s the one briefing Ulala in the screenshot above. And oversees Ulalaā€™s every move.
Also Ulala never got to meet her rescuer. He either left shortly after Ulala got rescued, or shortly before Ulala joined. Given what we learn later, likely the former.
Anyway onto the show:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
BAM!
Tumblr media
BAM!!
Tumblr media
BAM!!!
I will always love that. Ulala got down on the ground in the panicking space air port to coolly report on the panic.
As quick aside, I wanna mention that Ulala doesnā€™t run in this game, she slowly struts and all of her struts are simply majestic. And those amazing struts lead her to the first gameplay section of this game.
Tumblr media
Some Morolians hold a few hypnotized people hostage. This is is a dance battle. Meaning you got repeat exactly what the aliens do in the exact rhythm they did it in order to save the hostages. And I love this gameplay. Itā€™s simple yet fun (provided you got minimal lag, you should look into that if you wanna play this game).
The controls are:
Up: Up
Down: Down
Left: Left
Right: Right/Light
Button 1: Chu (Aliens)
Button 2: Chu (Humans)
And this is how normal people settle things in this world apparently:
Party 1 (usually the Aliens) make up a tough but fair pattern for Ulala to copy in the hopes of psyching her out.
Party 2 (Ulala & Co.) gets as many chances ad she got. And the better she does more people tune into her news report. If she wins she gets what she wants. Saving the hostage and getting Party 1 out of her hair.
Every single one lives by this code of honor and I honestly have no clue if thereā€™s an in-universe reason. But I love it regardless. I love it when people say: Up Down Chu Chu Chu. And the Ulala repeating it.
Though frankly, I donā€™t like it when the Morolians issue the commands. I like it when others do the exact same commands in this same game, so itā€™s a little bit of a bummer the Morolians do it.
Tumblr media
Anyways. You save the hostages and they join in on Ulalaā€™s unstoppable strut as will always happen if you rescue people. And they strut to the second gameplay type: The Shoot-out.
Tumblr media
The controls are the same as the above but now you gotta watch out for humans in the mix.
Tumblr media
In general these are trickier. And I might go into that later. But they do work on the same rules.
Donā€™t worry I wonā€™t go over every dance or shoot-out unless thereā€™s something special about it.
Also Iā€™m pretty sure you kill people if you push the wrong Chu. Donā€™t do that, itā€™s bad for the ratings!
Skipping over three battles.Something new happens, rival space news station: Space(?) Channel 42 has a reporter of their own out on the field. And that reporter is planning to steal Channel 5ā€²s viewership. And this is HER!
Tumblr media
You do a dance battle and she dies.
Though seriously, I like this game does this. Itā€™s not only aliens you fight, but other factions of the Space News Media. And itā€™s always a nice shake up when someone besides her shows up.
You see, for the most part any reoccurring enemy has recognizable mannerisms you gotta batlle, and her is no different. Itā€™s hard to describe for me. You kinda gotta play or watch the game for yourself to see what I mean, but I think itā€™s best exemplified in Report 2. And the following games.
Though one thingā€™s for sure, each non-normal Morolians or rival reported does bring their own genre switch with them. Heck sometimes even normal battles have unique genres. Iā€™m am not musically inclined so I wouldnā€™t know hers or most others.Ā
Any way, before she dies she give an emotional speech and gracefully suggests to take her Channel 42 guitarist with her and Ulala accepts thatā€™s the least she could do for a lousy reporter like her.
And then itā€™s boss time!
Yeah, actual bosses with actual boss characters. And not like the recently deceased as shown above. Sheā€™s practically for all intents and purposes another Morolian dance battle.
And itā€™s down to funky jazz music, not unlike what youā€™d see in Sonic Adventure! Even Ulala comments on it, confirming itā€™s dieteticĀ  Where does it come from? Not sure, there might be an explanation somewhere. But do keep that in mind. That the music we hear is also the music the characters hear as well.
Anyways:
Tumblr media
Not Pictured: Super Stretchy Arms.
I think itā€™s a bit of a misnomer. Invader is correct, thatā€™s what itā€™s here for. But is it really a robot? It moves like an organics and is a bit rubbery. This basically goes for all Morolian robots.
I can suspend my disbelief. You shouldnā€™t nitpick too much about Space Channel 5, it doesnā€™t want you to think too hard about itā€™s world even if thereā€™s a lot to it. Iā€™d be concerned if Space Channel 5 did wanna put its story and world building first and foremost.
But ā€œHypnotized Robot Invaderā€?
What?
Spoiler.
Robots and hypnotism... Iā€™m pretty sure a sign that we made perfect human-like Artificial Intelligence if they can fall susceptible to Hypnosis. Even then I doubt it.
Sorry, thatā€™s always bothered me, I get what they mean by it. Itā€™s just the word choice...Ā Did they mean Hypnotizing Robot Invader? This boss is great.
It starts off with a normal dance battle, but you get to watch a new Morolian enemyā€™s moves. Itā€™s also quicker on the draw along with a few softballs to throw your timing off. Pretty good stuff.
And that applies to the next phase as well, where the the shooting starts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I donā€™t have much to say.
Unlike the robotā€™s final phase where itā€™s the first phase again, but with guns and the robot goes to berserking speeds with the input commands.
Tumblr media
And after you beat it, it joins you in a strut.
Tumblr media
As does everyone you saved, No matter the gender, nor age, nobody is embarrassed imitating Ulala no matter what she does. Weā€™ll be half as lucky to get a cool future as cool as 2499.
And with that the first report is over.
Report 2: (Age 35)
At the Morolian HQ (Presumably), their boss doesnā€™t like failure.
Tumblr media
But like a good boss he doesnā€™t dwell on failure and moves on to the next plan. One of his lackeys has this plan: Another boss battle dance robot who operates on:
Tumblr media
The everyone at the table is impressed. So I guess Ulala is screwed, game over.
This level is more of the same as the last one more or less, itā€™s possibly the most boring level in the series in that regard. Itā€™s not bad, this is just the game bulding enough a status quo before they change things up in Report 3.
But that doesnā€™t make this level any less interesting to talk about, so I wonā€™t go over it much.
The short story until something new happens is: Space Ship (think of it as a fancy yacht but in space) is being attack by Morolians, Ulala is send to report on it, and being the professional she is saves hostages as well.
She saves the captain, crew members, stewardesses, waitresses, the Space Diva (OH NO! NOT THE SPACE DIVA!), passages and the like.
UNTIL!
He voice saysĀ ā€œIā€™m gonna steal you show, Space Channel 5ā€. And you see this ship flying by:
Tumblr media
Another rival reporter, this one a pirate broadcasting station.
Side note: Thatā€™s sounds like the most important kind of pirate ever. Alternative news/non-mainstream with no money/rating motive blinding everything with journalistic integrity? Yes, by all means. If theyā€™re pirates then so areĀ Secular Talk & The Humanist Report.
Back to the silly dance game. The Pirates either jam or hack Channel 5ā€²s signal and the Ulala is stuck with them for a while.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then we meet that where we meet the gent above.
ā€œ[His] name is:ā€œ
Tumblr media
ā€œJAGUAAAAARRRR!!!ā€ ā€œJAGUAAAAARRRR!!!ā€œ
(Age 35)
LETā€™S DANCE!
Tumblr media
Dude, I love Jaguar (Age 35) heā€™s gotta be my second favorite character in the series on account heā€™s just cool and incapable of embarrassment.
Remember the deceased of the last report? The Channel 42 reporter in the blue dress? Heā€™s her counterpart for this chapter.
But whereas the deceasedā€™s gimmick sounded air headed for a lack of a better term. Maybe, girly? Point is, battling her didnā€™t feel too dissimilar to battling Morolians despite her rhytmic mannerisms.
Jaguar (Age 35)ā€™s gimmick is that he just adds. He starts with a simple Up. And then he adds aĀ Chu, and another Chu. Eventually it becomes a really long chain of commands, it has to be some of the longest in the series. And you have to do them all from start to finish because he does them all sequentially. Can you repeat?:
Up. Chu. ChuChu. Right. Left. Down. DownDown. Down. Chu. Chu. Chu.
He is easing you into it, but it is by no means an easy fight. Because after the chain is at its longest, he just spamming ChuChuChu in quick succession. And then a simple Chu.
After defeat Jaguar & Co, escape by jet-pack, saying they will meet later.
Tumblr media
This battle is a highlight for me. Coco Tapioco and the big bosses to come are better if you ask me (with exceptions). But Jaguar (Age 35) is some of the best the normal gameplay goes.
And you could argue what normal means in the context of Space Channel 5. But effectively, like Channel 42ā€²s deceased, functionally he might as well be another Morolian if he wasnā€™t there to be set up for later. Because you do get person that just joins your Strut Club like everywhere else.
You gain his Jazz Man and you get a great sax solo as a reward beating him. Like how you got Channel 42ā€²s guitarist for beating them. I like the think the Jazz Man can work for Jaguar (Age 35) again while the Channel 42 Guitarist is blacklisted.
And before we move on from Jaguar (Age 35) check out his Chu pose:
Tumblr media
BOSS TIME!
Tumblr media
Jaguar (Age 35): The alien mothership is retreating. Donā€™t you have to follow them, Channel 5? Fuse: Blast you, Jaguar [Age 35].
With the pirates giving chase, Ulala is left with the cowardly alien robot to elegant music.
Tumblr media
Ignoring the robotā€™s title, while silly, its cowardice is its greatest asset. For it has kidnapped some space schoolkids, making their space teacher worry. Their space teacher can actually be seen at the start of the report.
Tumblr media
Space fashion, am I right?
Iā€™ve exceeded Tumblrā€™s invisible limit of what to put in a blog post. Iā€™ll have to rewrite this boss what I have to say for this boss. So full, canā€™t spell check! Weā€™ll be back!

A Collaboration by @mdelpinā€‹ and @oryu404ā€‹ AO3Ā | FF.Net
October 19, 2015
The dining table had turned into a messy showcase of textbooks, school supplies and loose sheets of notes that Sting was desperately trying to organize in search of that one paper he knew had to be in there somewhere. He shuffled some of the items around, only to swipe a binder off the edge of the table by accident, and as it dropped to the floor, most of its loose contents fell out.
"Shitā€¦" he cursed beneath his breath, quickly rising from his seat to pick up all the papers that had scattered across the floor, and lo and behold, the one he'd been searching for was among them. His face lit up in relief as he picked it up last, putting it on top of the stack in his hands and rising up again to continue his studies.
"There you a-Ouch!"
In his rush he'd forgotten that the trail of papers had led him underneath the table, and bumped his head as he got up. With a wince he rubbed at the sore spot, messing up his hair in the process. He sat back down at the table and bent over his lost and found paper, a diagram of the human skeleton that had all the bones named. He studied it carefully, reading through the notes he had made on the back of the paper over and over, trying to burn the parts that were highlighted in neon pink into his memory. So many medical terms were swarming through Sting's head that he was having trouble telling them apart, he was mixing them up when he tested himself. He let out a deep sigh and looked at the clock. It was starting to get late, Rogue had gone to take a shower and go to bed half an hour ago, and Sting would've loved to follow him, but he still had a lot of studying to do. He decided to take a quick break, grabbed a snack and a can of coke. Hopefully, the caffeine would enable him to carry on just a little bit longer.
But after two more sessions of cramming and quizzing himself, he still hadn't gotten the information to stick. He was making the same mistakes repeatedly, his frustrations growing as his focus began wandering to different places.
How many hours of sleep heā€™d have left if he studied for another hour or two, the prospect of having to fight Rogue for the blankets and snuggle up in bed with him, what the weather was going to be like tomorrow and how he should dress for it, the leftovers from dinner that were sitting in the fridge for lunch the next day...
Sting rested his elbows on the table and leaned his forehead on his hands, as if he'd be able to absorb the words he was reading better when he blocked out a part of his surroundings. Of course it didn't work as well as he'd hoped to, everything he read just seemed to evaporate from his mind within a few seconds, leaving him groaning in frustration.
Suddenly, a hand was placed gently on his shoulder, sliding up to the back of his neck when he wasnā€™t startled by the unexpected touch.
ā€œCome to bed,ā€ Rogue murmured, tangling his fingers in Stingā€™s hair as he let them draw random patterns on his scalp. ā€œI canā€™t,ā€ Sting whined. He lifted his head a little and let his hands fall flat onto the wooden surface of the table. ā€œI have an anatomy test coming up in three days, I really need to studyā€¦ā€ ā€œThree days? That means you have time left to study.ā€ ā€œYeah, but-ā€ ā€œNo buts.ā€ Rogue bent down, wrapping his arms around Sting and putting his chin on his shoulder, ā€œYouā€™ve been studying hard all semester, and youā€™ve barely taken a break since you got home this afternoon. I know you got this.ā€
ā€œBut what if I donā€™t? This stuff is hard, Rogue, I donā€™t think Iā€™m smart enough for thi- Ouch! Hey!ā€ Rogue flicked Stingā€™s ear, scoffing at the remark he hadnā€™t let him finish, ā€œIā€™m not having it. Sure, you can be careless, ridiculously silly, and sometimes you tend to act before you think, but youā€™re a lot smarter than you give yourself credit for.ā€ Sting didnā€™t really know what to say to that. He knew that Rogue wasnā€™t one to dish out compliments simply to make him feel better, so whenever he did, he meant and fully believed in them. Trying to argue with him about it wouldnā€™t get him anywhere, but as much as Sting wanted to accept Rogueā€™s words of reassurance, his insecurities were still looming in the back of his mind. ā€œAlright, give me 15 minutes, Iā€™m just going to read through these notes one last time and then Iā€™ll go to bed,ā€ he promised. ā€œDo you seriously think thatā€™s going to stick? After youā€™ve been cramming all evening?ā€ And looking at the sheet that was filled from top to bottom with his chicken scratch handwriting, he knew Rogue had a point. It was hard enough just to make sense of it, let alone to store the information in his head, that was already feeling over full and ready to explode at any given moment.
ā€œCome to bed with me,ā€ Rogue insisted, knowing exactly what he was doing as he purred the words against the delicate patch of skin below Stingā€™s ear. A display of affection, a seduction, cold hard tactics, whatever the thought behind it was, it was definitely effective. "You can continue tomorrow, I'll quiz you if you want."
Sting smiled, leaning his head on top of Rogue's and inhaling the scent of his freshly washed hair. He sighed and got up, "Okay, I'm coming. Just let me put all this crap away."
"Leave it, I can take care of it tomorrow." Rogue tried to steer him towards the bedroom, his hands on Sting's hips as he pulled him along while walking backwards. ā€œBut breakfastā€¦ā€ Sting tried to argue. ā€œI swear to God, Sting, one more but and I will smack yours and carry you to bed!ā€ ā€œSounds amazing!ā€ Sting grinned, mischief spreading all over his face. He raised his index finger in front of Rogueā€™s face and opened his mouth as if he was about to say something, waiting just long enough to throw Rogue off track before he rattled, ā€œBut you gotta catch me first!ā€ He missed the swat of Rogueā€™s hand by a hair when he dashed away, making Rogue chase after him through the living room. With not much available space to run, they ended up circling around the couch, laughing and making diversions to lure the other in the opposite direction. But Sting was getting tired, and knowing it would only be a matter of time before Rogue would catch him, he gave one last attempt at a great escape. He jumped on the couch, trying to launch himself over the backrest, but his foot got stuck in the gap between the seats. He wasnā€™t quick enough. Rogue tackled him and they ended up on the floor, still laughing. Sting tried to wrestle himself out of Rogueā€™s hold but gave up before he really started. He was pulled onto his feet and immediately received the promised smack on his butt, along with a victorious grin.
"I totally let you win," Sting said, rolling his eyes. It earned him another smack, and then he was lifted off the ground and hauled towards the bedroom. ā€œIā€™m...sure...you did,ā€ Rogue grunted, voice strained from carrying Stingā€™s weight. When they reached the bedroom he backed up against the door to push it open, speeding up his pace for the last few steps as the strength in his arms was giving out. Unceremoniously, he dropped Sting on the bed, let himself fall down next to him, and tried to catch his breath.
Sting immediately snuggled up against his side, thinking he should have done this sooner instead of stretching out his studying session to the point where all his efforts were in vain, and at that moment he realized that Rogue had spent their entire afternoon and evening, aside from dinner, all by himself. Unfortunately, it wasn't even the first time this had happened.
"Hey-" he brushed a thumb across Rogue's cheek, his gaze moving back and forth between his eyes and his lips, because he was dying to kiss them, 'I'm sorry I've been so busy lately, I'll promise to make it up to you this weekend. Maybe we can go out or something?"
"That sounds really nice, but I'm fine with watching movies in bed with you all day as well, you know." Rogue smiled and pulled him closer, "I was getting slightly worried that you found your textbooks more interesting than meā€¦"
"I don't," Sting assured him, catching his lips in a slow kiss, "I promise."
"I'm just messing with you," he chuckled, "I know how important your studies are, but I was getting worried you were pushing yourself too hard. And I guess I do miss us spending time together as much as we used to before you started med school."
Although he had phrased it subtly, Sting didn't take it lightly. Rogue had been lonely for a long time already, he didn't want him to feel that way even when they were together. He would still have to study a lot for a few years, but Rogue was right, he should plan more short breaks in between. Go on walks together to get some fresh air, watch tv or play a game for a while, get a snack. And since Rogue had proposed to quiz him, he was definitely going to hold him to that offer and incorporate him into his studying sessions until he'd bore him to tears.
He could hit two birds with one stone: spend some time with his boyfriend and refresh his mind for a bit. Surely the subject matter would stick a lot better if he didn't try to fry his brain, why didn't he think of that before?
"You're a genius," Sting smiled widely. He ignored the look of total confusion on Rogue's face and continued trailing kisses on his skin.
"Huh? What did I do?" Rogue puzzled, unsure if he should focus on the conversation or the sudden onslaught of affection he was subjected to.
"You keep me from going mental, that's what."
"I'm pretty sure it goes the other way around," he mumbled, slowly losing the capability to divide his attention.
"Actually, I think it goes both ways," Sting shrugged happily. "So, you think you can help me do some more studying? It's anatomy after all." He quirked an eyebrow and smirked suggestively.
"You're awful," Rogue sighed, his confusion finally gone and replaced by a responsive smile.
"Oh come on! I know what you were up to!" Sting copied his behavior and words from earlier in the most exaggerated manner, adding a few he never even said, "Come to bed with me, I want you so badly..."
"That's not what I said!" Rogue protested, laughing through his embarrassment and launching a poking attack on Sting's ribs.
It wasn't before long until their giggles dissolved into kisses, tickling abandoned for more passionate touches. It was past a reasonable bedtime already, so Sting might regret it when he'd have to wake up early again in the morning, but then again, he probably wouldn't. And he didn't see why he should wait until the weekend to make up for his neglect if he could show Rogue that he still meant the world to him right now.

Nothing Like the Present (Part One)

[Part 9 of A Very Valtorian Christmas [Masterlist]
In this Episode: The Royal Heir gang
Duke Drake & Duchess Kate Walker, King Nicholas, Hana Lee, Maxwell Beaumont, Preston Davis (OC)
Warnings: None, just harmless fluff.
word count: 1633
..______________________________________________..
In the great room of Valtorian manor, Hana and Kate stand off to the side to watch the men move furniture. The goal was to create a comfortable seating area facing the Christmas tree so everyone could open presents together. Drake and Nicholas were working together to bring over pieces of the sectional sofa. Watching them it would seem that they'd set aside their differences in the spirit of cooperation. Although it was clear to Kate that the rivalry was very much alive as they tried to show off by carrying heavier things one handed. The grunts and mutterings of ā€œPlease let me help you with that, Your Grace, or Your Majesty..ā€ were just making Kate shake her head.
Maxwell was honestly struggling to lift one of Drake's heavy arm chairs by himself. While Drake and Nicholas were preoccupied, Preston appears out of nowhere to help.
ā€œPreston to the rescue,ā€ Kate says quietly, nudging Hana with her elbow.
As Preston bends at the knees, his thighs and biceps flexing, demonstrating perfect lifting technique, the women can't help but watch. Maxwell pretends to help, gripping the arm of the chair and trying to keep up with the taller, stronger man. Maxwell looks over to Kate for directions, ā€œWhere should we put this Kate?ā€
Kate smiles and points to a space nearest to the tree, ā€œRight over there. His Majesty deserves the best seat in the house.ā€
Drake straightens up from shoving an end piece of the sofa into place, he's slightly out of breath as he protests with a frown, ā€œBut..that's my chair.ā€
Kate tilts her chin up and gives Drake a disapproving look. He rolls his eyes and then looks away.
Nicholas wipes a bead of sweat from his brow, combing his hair back into place with his fingers. He gives Kate a respectful nod and a smile of gratitude. ā€œYou Honour me, Your Grace.ā€
Maxwell plugs in the Christmas tree, trying to hide the look of childish glee on his face as he looks to Kate and Hana expectantly.
Ā Kate giggles at him, ā€œOk Max, you can hand out presents.ā€
ā€œOoh, can I borrow Drake's Santa Hat?ā€
Preston tries to hide his smirk as he exchanges a glance with Drake, he's met with a frown and then his smile fades.
ā€œUh, sorry Max, but no.ā€ Drake replies.
...
Kate snuggles under a throw blanket between Drake and Hana on the sofa. Picking up the edge of the blanket, Drake shifts over closer. Under the blanket, Drake nudges Kate's knee with his own. She nudges back and then leans into his side as he wraps an arm around her shoulders.
ā€œI love you Kate,ā€ he whispers, nuzzling his face into her hair behind her ear.
Kate lowers her lashes as his warm breath tickles her neck, thankful nobody can see her goosebumps. ā€œI know, Honey. I love you too,ā€ she whispers back, reaching up to touch his cheek. Ā
Maxwell sits cross legged on the floor, humming to himself as he pokes through the presents. He picks out a large blue gift bag and hands it to Hana with a smile, ā€œHere you go, this one is from me.ā€
Hana smiles as she opens the bag, pulling out a box of chocolate covered cherries and a bottle of sparkling wine from the Ramsford Estate. ā€œThank-you Max. How did you know these were my favorite chocolates?ā€
Maxwell winks back at her, ā€œYouā€™re like my best friend Hana Cakes, that's how, besides they're my favorite too. I remembered how you always went for those first at the sweets table. And I love the way you giggle when youā€™re full of champagne.ā€
Hana blushes, ā€œOh Max, youā€™re too sweet. I love you too.ā€
Maxwell shrugs bashfully, and then turns back to the gifts under the tree. He grunts as he hefts a heavy rectangle wrapped in red paper and checks the tag, ā€œThis one is for.. Nicholas. From Drake and Kate.ā€
Nicholas leans over to receive it, nodding his thanks to Kate. He carefully undoes the paper, being sure not to rip it. Drake chuckles, ā€œOh come on, man. Tear into it already.ā€
As the paper falls away, the carved metal gift canister of a 12 yr old whiskey is revealed. On the bottom of the canister is taped another smaller box. ā€œOh my goodness Drake, you shouldn't have.ā€
Nicholasā€™ eyes shine with gratitude as he unwraps and opens the second box to find a silver colored flask engraved with his initials. He rubs his thumb over the scrolling pattern of the letters.
ā€œA little bit of liquid courage to take the edge out of Madeleineā€™s insufferable morning meetings,ā€ Kate grins.
Nicholas slides the flask into his inside pocket, patting the outside of his jacket as the weight of it settles against his chest. ā€œIā€™ll treasure it always, thanks.ā€
Drake feels a pleasant warmth spread through him as Max hands him a red striped package, knowing it's from Kate. He gives it a shake and hears something quietly shift inside the box. ā€œWell it's definitely not anything noisy or heavy.ā€
Kate shrugs, not giving any hints at the contents. Maxwell hands Hana a small package with similar wrapping paper to pass along to Kate. She gives it a gentle shake, but hears nothing. Raising her eyebrows with curiosity she picks at the edge of the wrapping paper as Drake tears into his gift. Opening up a red garment box, Drake finds a pair of silky black pyjamas. He frowns briefly, and then smirks as he glances at Kate. ā€œYou got me..pjs? uh, thanks Kate.ā€
He lowers his voice and leans in close, ā€œYou know I don't wear anything to bed. So why silk?ā€
Maxwell leans over to peek at Drakeā€™s new sleepwear. ā€œOoh, those are fancy looking jammies. Trust me dude, once you feel how nice they are against your skin youā€™ll never want to wear anything else.ā€
Drake closes the box quickly and sets it aside. ā€œUh.. ok. Donā€™t need to know why you might say that Max. I really don't want to imagine you wearing, and enjoying such a fabric against your skin. Not exactly helpful.ā€
Kate notices a blush rising up Drakeā€™s neck, and pats him on the knee. ā€œYou only need to wear the bottoms Drake. I can wear the top if you feel two pieces is too much for you.ā€
Drake grins, rubbing at his jaw nervously and trying to mentally keep the image of Kate half naked out of his mind. He's glad that there is a blanket covering his lap. Clearing his throat, he changes the subject, trying to draw attention away from himself.
ā€œUh Kate, you haven't opened your gift yet. Oh and Max, there's a big box for you under the tree too.ā€
Maxwellā€™s face lights up and he looks through the other gifts for his own. The lower branches of the Christmas tree bounce and the ornaments jingle as he half disappears during his search.
Kate unwraps her gift as Hana looks on. They both gasp when Kate lifts the lid on the deluxe gift box embossed with gold lettering. ā€œAre those diamonds?ā€ Hana asks.
Drake sucks in a breath and grins sheepishly as he mumbles, ā€œI certainly hope so, for what they cost.ā€
Kate's eyes well up with tears as she delicately traces the sparkling princess-cut diamond earrings with her fingers. Based on their size they had to be at least a carat each. ā€œOh Drake..,ā€ she whispers.
Drake smiles at the expression on her face, ā€œYou like them?ā€
Kate is speechless, reaching over to pull him in for a kiss. When she sits back, she shakes her head in disbelief. ā€œYes, I love them. But they're too much.ā€
Drake reaches up, brushing a lock of hair back from her face, shaking his head with a smile. ā€œNo, nothing is too much, I wanted to give you something that shines and sparkles as beautifully as you do.ā€
Kate gives him another kiss and then sits back with a smile, wiping at the corner of her eye. ā€œThankyou Drake, they're so beautiful.ā€
Turning toward Hana, Kate smiles happily and hands her the box so that Hana can see the earrings up close. They ooh and ah as she tilts them in the light to see how they sparkle and shine.
Drake breathes a sigh and sits back against the sofa, happy to see Kate happy. A squeal of delight distracts from thinking about what the earrings cost.
Maxwell was grinning from ear to ear and hugging the new Xbox Drake had bought him to his chest. On the floor amongst the wrappings were copies of Just Dance 2018 and 2019 as well.
ā€œThere Max, now whenever you come to visit you can dance and sing until your heartā€™s content,ā€ Kate laughs.
ā€œAaaand challenge Drake to dance battles?" Max insists, his eyes shining with mischief.
Drake rolls his eyes with a sigh, folding his arms, ā€œWeā€™ll see. At the very least itā€™ll be an amusing form of exercise.ā€
Hana claps her hands with glee, ā€œOoh I want to play. Iā€™m familiar with all sorts of dancing.ā€
Maxwell hands Hana one of the game packages so she can see what songs are featured. She frowns as many of the songs arenā€™t familiar to her. ā€œI donā€™t know these songs.ā€
Kate nudges Hana with her elbow, ā€œThatā€™s what makes it so fun. Besides, the dances are all demonstrated on the screen and it's all part of the experience to laugh and have a good time.ā€
Drake and Nicholas exchange a glance, both raising their eyebrows in a silent exchange. Nicholas lifts up his whiskey bottle, tilting it toward Drake. ā€œThey can play and weā€™ll enjoy a little of this somewhere else.ā€
Drake nods, breathing a sigh of relief. ā€œAgreed.ā€

Book Forty-Nine: Black House
ā€œHere is a true American loner, an internal vagrant, a creature of shabby rooms and cheap diners, of aimless journeys resentfully taken, a collector of wounds and injuries lovingly fingered and refingered. Here is a spy with no cause higher than himself.ā€Ā
Tumblr media
After almost fifty books, The Talisman still stands at the top of the leader board as my favorite Steve book. Itā€™s richly layered, full of memorable characters and horrible villains, with a satisfying conclusion. Itā€™s the type of book fantasy and horror lovers alike are eager to escape into.Ā
Itā€™s sometimes hard to embrace the sequel to a book you love so much... I mean, I can be bought, but my criteria are stringent:
Consider setting the book in Wisconsin... perhaps the beautiful, sad, remote, desolate western part of the state right along the Mississippi river.
Maybe a Dahmer reference?Ā
Scratch that. Instead, go with an old-school serial killer no one really talks about anymore. How about... Albert Fish? Heā€™s pretty gross.Ā
Tumblr media
On second thought, reconsider a Dahmer reference. Maybe an evil spirit that links Dahmer and Fish together?Ā
TONS of Dark Tower references.Ā
If Steve and Pete were to consider writing a follow up to The Talisman with all these elements, I might consider reading it.Ā
Spoiler!Ā
Dark House contains all this goodness, and more.Ā
Itā€™s so fucking dark, yā€™all. I donā€™t think Iā€™m ever going to be able to drive past a long-term care facility and NOT think about an old man inside wanting to eat the buttocks of small children.
Oh hey, trigger warnings for cannibalism, and violence against children.Ā
So, Dark House is set in fictional Coulee County, Wisconsin (not a place). But Steve and Pete (I need to start giving Peter Straub some shout outs as well) describe the western part of the state magnificently. Not too long ago I had a sales job that required me to travel the entire state, and I always loved my jaunts west. Iā€™d park right along the Mississippi, eat my lunch and just soak up the isolation. Iā€™d much rather make the drive to Pierce county than the Quad Cities, which my current employer is asking of me. *Silent scream for help*
Despite Coulee being fictional, the actual Wisconsin references are thick:
De Pere (where we recently found out Steve spent a few formative years)
The BrewersĀ
Miller ParkĀ
Kingsland Ale- while fictional, itā€™s a nod to Wisconsinā€™s rich brewing history, and favorable climate for microbreweries
Dahmer (several times, actually)
Racine. Yā€™all. I have no idea what Steveā€™s obsession is with Racine... it comes up in multiple books. Itā€™s really not that great. Take that from someone who spent a brief period of time working there. Honestly, my favorite thing about Racine is the authentic Thai restaurant right in downtown, Sticky Rice. If you find yourself in Racine, please go check them out... their red devil curry is amaze-balls.Ā
So, yes... lots of Wisconsin. Also, lots of Dark Tower:
Eye of the King
Crimson King
The Tower
Red roses
Breakers
Little SistersĀ
Gunslingers and their weapons
Roland and the ka-tet
Monos! Blaine and Patricia
Chief Breaker Brautigan- who allegedly tells hilarious stories about his escapes. I miss him already.Ā
I have questions about how Steve convinced Pete to include so many Dark Tower elements into this book...
Steve:Ā  ā€œPete, bud... I know you might have a different vision for how this book plays out. Buuut what about if we make it part of the Dark Tower universe?ā€
Pete: Stares for a long minute.Ā ā€œUm, I thought that series was dead in the water. Do we really need to use Dark House to resuscitate it?ā€Ā
Steve:Ā ā€œRemember the car accident? You know, the one that almost took my leg?ā€Ā
Pete *Oh fuck, heā€™s bringing up the car accident as a bid for sympathy, and to convince me to make this a Dark Tower book...*Ā ā€œOf course I remember!ā€
Steve:Ā ā€œWell, it shook some things loose. Iā€™m about ready to finish the series. I just thought it might be fun if we make this book a lead-up to the finaleā€Ā
Pete:Ā ā€œItā€™s intriguing, but Iā€™m not really sure itā€™s the direction I want to go in. I was thinking more-ā€
Steve:Ā ā€œI ALMOST DIED IN THAT ACCIDENT!ā€Ā
Pete:Ā ā€œCool, Dark Tower book it is!ā€Ā
I should write fan fiction. Iā€™ve obviously got a gift.Ā
Black House is told from a birds-eye narration view. Literally... thereā€™s this fat, evil crow named Gorg flying all over town, giving us the lay of Coulee County. Bad stuff has been going on: little children have gone missing, and only a few of their bodies have turned back up mutilated and broken.Ā
The chief of police, Dale Gilbertson, knows heā€™s in over his head, and keeps trying to convince his pal, retired police detective, Jack ā€œHollywoodā€ Sawyer to come consult on the case.
Jack isnā€™t having it. He retired young and moved to Coulee County from Los Angeles after tracking down and arresting serial killer Thorny Kinderling. The majestic beauty of western Wisconsin caught him by surprise, and he happily invested in reasonably priced (read: cheap) real estate with a view.Ā
Upon moving to Wisconsin, Jack befriended Daleā€™s blind uncle Henry Leydon; who voices several radio programs, including The Wisconsin Rat, which plays indy screamo bands and has plenty of shock-jock antics. The two hang out together, listen to jazz music, and sometimes Jack reads to Henry. Henry was able to use his elevated senses to study Jackā€™s speech pattern and figure out Jackā€™s mom was THE Lily Cavanaugh; the Queen of the Bā€™s.Ā
While Jack and Henry are reading Bleak House, CharlesĀ ā€œBurnyā€ Burnside is wandering around the Maxton Elder Care Facility, pretending to have dementia, and dragging children into The Territories for Lord Malshun to either use as Breakers, or for Burny to snack on if they have no Breaking skills. So, Burnyā€™s a bad dude who did some suspicious things in Chicago; but an evil spirit (the same one who invaded Albert Fish and Jeffrey Dahmerā€™s bodies) is whatā€™s causing his kidnapping and cannibalistic urges. I know I say this every ten books or so, but Burny might be the worst King villain ever. I was not upset later on when his intestines were violently ripped from his body.
A sweet little boy (with strong Breaker powers) named Tyler Marshall goes missing outside the Maxton Elder Care Facility. While he was being pulled into the bushes by Gorg who kept repeating his name; his mother, Judy receives a taunting package and letter from The Fisherman, which sends her over the brink, and sheā€™s institutionalized.Ā
Tylerā€™s disappearance really amps up the town outrage, and Jack agrees to help the police department out. Heā€™s starting to suspect thereā€™s some Territories nonsense going down, and he can help.Ā
From here, the book goes at break-neck pace and includes everything from micro-brewing bikers, a dog bite that causes one to dissolve into a foamy puddle on the couch, our old friend Speedy Parker showing up as a gunslinger, the worldā€™s most annoying newspaper reporter, plenty of flipping between worlds via the creepy old black house hidden in the woods, and a happy(ish) ending. Honestly, thereā€™s a warning at the end of the book, which allows you to choose your own ending. You can stop reading five pages before the end, and enjoy a happy ending where the good guys win; or you can get the real world ending. Both are satisfying... I recommend reading all the way to the end.Ā
So, just a few quotes for you...Ā
ā€œWolf died of a disease called America.ā€Ā
This line gutted me. I didnā€™t realize how much I loved Wolf as a character, until I had to read a follow-up that didnā€™t include him. His soul was too clean and beautiful for a fucked-up world like the one we currently live in.Ā
ā€œHe doesnā€™t like the cell phone to begin with- twenty-first-century slave bracelets, he thinks them...ā€
No explanation needed.Ā
ā€œWhy must life always demand so much and give so little? Parkus answers her question with a single word: ka.ā€Ā
Again, no explanation needed.Ā
Was this book as good as The Talisman?Ā
No.Ā
Did I want more?Ā
Absolutely.
But was I satisfied with the end?
You bet your (un-chomped on) ass.

So, yes, itā€™s Labor Day here in the US, a national holiday. Many companies would therefore give today off to their employees, but since every day is a holiday here at Onyx Path, we had our usual Monday Meeting today, and work continues apace.
Of course, the second part of our MMN Blog title today comes from the fact that the Scion: Demigod 2e Kickstarter has been just crashing through the Stretch Goals after funding in 75 minutes! Weā€™re all really thrilled and grateful to all of our backers for showing such fantastic support!
Putting the two together, I thought that a change of pace today that showed how some labor was done to create the elements for Scion: Demigod might be appropriate. And since I did some of that labor, I figure itā€™s on me to step up today and delve into the creation process for one of our latest Scion pantheon symbols.
This one is for the Apu, the Incan pantheon.
Itā€™s usually after the writing is pretty well finalized, but not necessarily developed, that Iā€™ll ask the project developer for notes on whichever part of the project needs a symbol. In the case of Scion, our writing and dev teams do such a deep dive into the pantheons that I could get overwhelmed just reading through the text, so in addition to letting me read that, I also ask for any ideas they might have for symbols and elements appropriate to the pantheon.
Sometimes I get easily usable ideas, and other times the needs of a visual project mean that I have to dig a bit deeper myself. In the case of the Apu, my notes scrawled on my note pad included: ā€œgolden sun disc (with link)ā€, ā€œstepped pyramidā€, ā€œstone and goldā€, ā€œorder/stabilityā€, ā€œCuscoā€, ā€œblack and white llamasā€.
I was good to go with the golden sun disc, and checked to see if any of the previous Scion symbols I designed went down that same visual direction. None did, so using that big hit of gold as the centerpiece became the start for the symbol. I originally considered using the foliage motif similar to what I did for the Aztec pantheon symbol as a background and surrounding next for the gold disc, but that did seem too close to other symbols and for me it just didnā€™t feel Incan enough.
Which is a big part of what makes these Scion symbols work, they have to feel appropriate to the pantheon. Which means weā€™re in the realm of the subjective, as what feels right to me may not feel right to you. But thatā€™s the chance you take, because these are Scion symbols and they have to touch us, mean something to us, at least a bit, or weā€™re missing the point of the setting/game. All the raw data in the world about what should be included doesnā€™t help if most people arenā€™t connecting with that symbol.
That led me to hit the books. Yes, actual books. If I know what I want, finding 1500 images that I can use as reference for that thing is a snap with a Google search, but if Iā€™m still looking for visuals that connect with me, then online searching just doesnā€™t work for me as well as paging through books about a culture. I donā€™t know whatā€™s on the next page, which is the point.
One of the things I picked up on, was how striking the textiles still are in areas weā€™d consider Incan. Which started a whole different idea about how the color could and should work for this symbol. Bird feathers as decoration, and returning to one of the writerā€™s suggestions, the Incan knotted rope language called quipu. I had wanted to use it but didnā€™t have a way to keep the ropes and knots legible in the symbol, but with a bright textile background holding everything together, I could bring the quipu back into play.
Hereā€™s my rough ideas page, the Apu symbol at top right representing the first pass, and the one lower left coming after I did more research:
From the rough sketch, where Iā€™m looking at what elements can be arranged in what pattern, and where Iā€™m thinking about but not putting down the color yet, Iā€™ll draw out the various elements on bristol board in ink ā€“ usually with technical pens rather than anything that would give a varying line. We just need an even line.
A lot of time, if I know I want an image the same on both sides, or top and bottom, then Iā€™ll just draw the one side and copy/flip/combine in Photoshop after scanning. The knotted ropes are on a separate page, as they required the whole sheet so I could draw them with enough detail.
Like I mentioned, these drawings get scanned in, and are really used as raw materials to copy and paste from when I start to make the whole symbol in Photoshop. Each element in the design gets its own layer, and that layer is set to Multiply in the layer menu. That way, the darkest lines stay dark, but anything in a layer ā€œunderā€ our line art shows through. This will become clearer when you see how the color goes in, but hereā€™s just the line art all piled on top of each other:
At this point, itā€™s time to get color in there, and in this specific symbol, itā€™s also time to get the patterning into the Incan textile. Some of the colors only show up when the overall color is on there, so donā€™t worry if it seems like some of the symbols arenā€™t there. They are on layers that I did different layer types, like Multiply from before:
I also used the same colors for the fringe along the bottom and just drew those in loosely knowing the overall color would fall in between the other colors. Each instance of the bird symbol is on its own layer so that I could play around with size, position, layer effects, and color. I was going more for energy with the positioning and a certain lack of perfect positioning to replicate the hand-crafted nature of the textile.
Next, here it is with the red overall color. I spent a lot of time playing with the color controls to get the red I wanted, and then tweaked almost all of the little bird symbols to have their colors work with the red:
While some of the birds are now showing up, you can see a few blank spots in there. Donā€™t worry, those wonā€™t show up once the other item layers get colored in.
This was good, but the thing was, it didnā€™t feel like fabric to me. And thatā€™s what I wanted to really play up ā€“ the texture of the textile! I could have scanned in a cloth texture, or found one online, but in this case I went with combining layer effects and filters. Iā€™d tell you what I did if I could remember, but hereā€™s what it looked like without the red layer behind it:
Iā€™m going to jump ahead here, and give you a step by step look at the big gold disk as itā€™s layers are painted in, but just assume that whatever I tell you about the disk, I already did in sort of the same sequence for the knotted ropes and the feathered headdress. I also started thickening the line stroke around objects to give them more heft and set them visually into the whole symbol. More on that later.
So hereā€™s the first color for the disk, a dark golden brown:
Hereā€™s where it really gets fun and painterly. The next layer is just yellow, with the Photoshop brush set on soft-round and at something like 25% transparency. With the lines already setting up the shapes, I just zoomed in and put yellow in keeping the brightest areas towards where the light was supposed to be hitting the disk (more from below than the traditional light from above):
Looking at it at this point, it didnā€™t pop enough. So I copied the yellow layer and set it to Multiply or the like and the doubled up yellow hit what I was looking for. It didnā€™t show up much when I was putting these sequential layer graphics together, but itā€™s that sort of subtle coloring that gives it the 3D look we need:
And here goes the last highlight on the gold, which was a lot closer to white to really get a bit of sparkle, plus I also created a shadow effect in two layers so that the disk would feel more like it is on top of the other elements. We want that gold disk to be the big popping thing from this graphic, and it needs to be strong to outshine the colors of the textile:
You can also see that I made the outer edge line much thicker than the others inside the symbol, so weā€™d have a strong edge to it so it could stand out on the page like the previous Scion symbols. Although, to be faaaair, I did reduce that thickness where the knotted ropes break out of the bottom. The ropes were being engulfed by the outline visually, plus, thereā€™s a whole ā€œlanguage will be freeā€ sort of thing going on there.
Hope you enjoyed this little look at the labor (or labour, as Matthew, James, and Ian would say) behind one of these pieces. It really is a labor of love, though, and it is so great when folks really respond to them.

Virtual TableTop!
Introducing a Virtual Tabletop adventure: the Gauntlet of Spiragos for Scarred Lands on Astral TableTop!
Scars of the Divine War, which ended less than 200 years ago, have still not healed. One such scar is the Chasm of Flies, a rent in the earth created when the titan Spiragos the Ambusher was smote down by one of the young gods, Vangal the Ravager. Now, the Chasm is inhabited by spider-eye goblins and their spider allies, but it is also thought to be the resting place of powerful artifacts from that elder age.
Gauntlet of Spiragos is a Scarred Lands adventure designed for 1st level characters, although it can be easily modified for characters of up to 5th level.
Astral TableTop is the easiest way to play any tabletop RPG online, free. Astral already supports popular systems like D&D and Pathfinder, and Astral can support virtually any tabletop roleplaying game. Get started quickly with built-in support for most popular game systems. Whether youā€™re brand new to TTRPGs or a veteran tabletop gamer, Astralā€˜s ease-of-use and built in automation is designed to streamline gameplay.
Astral is browser-based and uses the latest technology to streamline your storytelling experience. Connect with your party online and run your campaigns however you like. Astral offers tools optimized for phone, tablet, and desktop devices, no installation required.
Build epic battlemaps using Astralā€˜s enormous collection of scenery, props, and tokens or upload your own. Pro users gain access to over 12,000+ assets and fresh new packs every month. Add weather, visual effects, triggers, and so much more with easy-to-use tools
Build your own adventure, or choose from pre-generated game kits like Gauntlet of Spiragos. Create character sheets, craft maps, or just jump right in to connect with your friends and start your adventures!

831.
1: when you have cereal, do you have more milk than cereal or more cereal than milk? >> I donā€™t eat cereal anymore, but from what I can remember, I didnā€™t really like having a lot of milk in the bowl.
2: do you like the feeling of cold air on your cheeks on a wintery day? >> Not usually.
3: what random objects do you use to bookmark your books? >> On the occasion that Iā€™m reading a paper book, if itā€™s my own, I just dog-ear it. If itā€™s a library book, I use the receipt that I got from checking out the book.
4: how do you take your coffee/tea? >> Black (or in the case of some teas, with a little honey).
5: are you self-conscious of your smile? >> Iā€™m self-conscious of my entire face.
6: do you keep plants? >> I just have the one spider plant in my room. It looks pretty done for, but like... itā€™s not dead, exactly, so I have no idea what to do with it. Sparrow, on the other hand, has about fifteen plants on the balcony, two in her room, etc.
7: do you name your plants? >> Sparrow has named at least one of hers.
8: what artistic medium do you use to express your feelings? >> I just wrangle the written word the best I can.
9: do you like singing/humming to yourself? >> Absolutely.
10: do you sleep on your back, side, or stomach? >> Side.
11: whatā€™s an inner joke you have with your friends? >> Sparrow and I have this thing where we just mangle words as badly as possible. Like ā€œchickenā€ has become ā€œchimkinā€, stuff like that.
12: whatā€™s your favorite planet? >> Mercury and Pluto, for completely opposite reasons (as Iā€™m sure is obvious).
13: whatā€™s something that made you smile today? >> I saw a random crop of mushrooms while walking. It was just... random! I donā€™t know what died there or whatever that made the mushrooms grow in that one little spot, but it was adorable.
14: if you were to live with your best friend in an old flat in a big city, what would it look like? >> ---
15: go google a weird space fact and tell us what it is! >> I donā€™t feel like it.
16: whatā€™s your favorite pasta dish? >> I donā€™t have one.
17: what color do you really want to dye your hair? >> I donā€™t.
18: tell us about something dumb/funny you did that has since gone down in history between you and your friends and is always brought up. >> ---
19: do you keep a journal? what do you write/draw/ in it? >> I technically have one, on Dreamwidth, but I never bother updating it. This is my journal, along with my personal blog.
20: whatā€™s your favorite eye color? >> ---
21: talk about your favorite bag, the one thatā€™s been to hell and back with you and that you love to pieces. >> I donā€™t have one of those. I have three different bags for different purposes.
22: are you a morning person? >> Sure.
23: whatā€™s your favorite thing to do on lazy days where you have 0 obligations? >> I usually have 0 real obligations (aside from ones I impose on myself), so I have no idea how to answer this.
24: is there someone out there you would trust with every single one of your secrets? >> ---
25: whatā€™s the weirdest place youā€™ve ever broken into? >> Iā€™m not sure.
26: what are the shoes youā€™ve had for forever and wear with every single outfit? >> There are no shoes that Iā€™ve had for forever. I only have two pairs of shoes, so basically both of them get worn with every single outfit (the boots in the cooler months, the sneakers in the summer and for walking).
27: whatā€™s your favorite bubblegum flavor? >> Well, isnā€™t bubble gum only one flavour?
28: sunrise or sunset? >> Both are good. Although I like saying hello to the Sun more than I like saying goodbye to it.
29: whatā€™s something really cute that one of your friends does and is totally endearing? >> ---
30: think of it: have you ever been truly scared? >> Sure.
31: what is your opinion of socks? do you like wearing weird socks? do you sleep with socks? do you confine yourself to white sock hell? really, just talk about socks. >> I like wearing socks with funky patterns and designs on them, and sometimes I mismatch them on purpose for my own amusement. I do not sleep with socks.
32: tell us a story of something that happened to you after 3AM when you were with friends. >> I canā€™t really think of one right now.
33: whatā€™s your fave pastry? >> ---
34: tell us about the stuffed animal you kept as a kid. what is it called? what does it look like? do you still keep it? >> I donā€™t remember what I kept as a child. I think I had a lion or two. I only remember that because my father is fucking obsessed with lions so of course I had lion plushies.
35: do you like stationery and pretty pens and so on? do you use them often? >> I do like them, but I donā€™t have occasion to use them.
36: which bandā€™s sound would fit your mood right now? >> I donā€™t know.
37: do you like keeping your room messy or clean? >> I like keeping it tidy.
38: tell us about your pet peeves! >> Iā€™d really rather not right now.
39: what color do you wear the most? >> Black.
40: think of a piece of jewelry you own: whatā€™s itā€™s story? does it have any meaning to you? >> I donā€™t really have any stories behind any of the jewelry I own.
41: whatā€™s the last book you remember really, really loving? >> Well, I reread The Phantom Tollbooth recently and Iā€™ve been fond of that book for almost as long as Iā€™ve been alive.
42: do you have a favorite coffee shop? describe it! >> No.
43: who was the last person you gazed at the stars with? >> I donā€™t remember.
44: when was the last time you remember feeling completely serene and at peace with everything? >> Oof...
45: do you trust your instincts a lot? >> I donā€™t know.
46: tell us the worst pun you can think of. Any burger of the day ever written on the board at Bobā€™s Burgers. I love them though. <-- Iā€™m going to stick with that, those are just utterly shameless puns lmao
47: what food do you think should be banned from the universe? >> ---
48: what was your biggest fear as a kid? is it the same today? >> I was afraid of thunderstorms and flying insects. I still have a reflexive aversion to flying insects when theyā€™re flying around me (even though I actually like a lot of flying insects, like bees and moths and stuff), but I am definitely not afraid of thunderstorms anymore.
49: do you like buying CDs and records? what was the last one you bought? >> I donā€™t buy CDs and I rarely buy records. I think the last record I bought was a deluxe copy of Pearl Jamā€™s Ten that I found at ALDI, of all places.
50: whatā€™s an odd thing you collect? >> I donā€™t collect things.
51: think of a person. what song do you associate with them? >> ---
52: what are your favorite memes of the year so far? >> I donā€™t remember what memes came out this year.
53: have you ever watched the rocky horror picture show? heathers? beetlejuice? pulp fiction? what do you think of them? >> I tried watching RHPS and Beetlejuice and didnā€™t like either one. Didnā€™t even finish them, in fact. Heathers was okay. Pulp Fiction was entertaining.
54: whoā€™s the last person you saw with a true look of sadness on their face? >> *shrug* What even is a true look of sadness.
55: whatā€™s the most dramatic thing youā€™ve ever done to prove a point? >> I have no idea.
56: what are some things you find endearing in people? >> Meh.
57: go listen to bohemian rhapsody. how did it make you feel? did you dramatically reenact the lyrics? >> Listening to Bohemian Rhapsody doesnā€™t really make me feel anything, but itā€™s fun to reenact sometimes, yeah. Especially in a car, Wayneā€™s World style.
58: whoā€™s the wine mom and whoā€™s the vodka aunt in your group of friends? why? >> ---
59: whatā€™s your favorite myth? >> Oh god, thatā€™s the worst question. I love so many different myths.
60: do you like poetry? what are some of your faves? >> I canā€™t usually get into poetry, a lot of it is inscrutable in a way thatā€™s just annoying to me instead of intriguing. There are some poems I like, though, but donā€™t ask me to remember them right now.
61: whatā€™s the stupidest gift youā€™ve ever given? the stupidest one youā€™ve ever received? >> ---
62: do you drink juice in the morning? which kind? >> Not usually.
63: are you fussy about your books and music? do you keep them meticulously organized or kinda leave them be? >> Iā€™m fussy about my everything. I donā€™t own enough books or physical copies of music to really warrant being meticulous about their organisation, though.
64: what color is the sky where you are right now? >> Pale blue.
65: is there anyone you havenā€™t seen in a long time who youā€™d love to hang out with? >> I mean, sure, why not.
66: what would your ideal flower crown look like? >> I used to have a really big one that someone on tumblr made for me a long time ago, lmao. That was good.
67: how do gloomy days where the sky is dark and the world is misty make you feel? >> It depends on how I already felt. If I was having an okay day, then itā€™s just dreamy and ~goth~ and I will probably make 100 Silent Hill jokes. If Iā€™m having an off day, then the fact that the Sun isnā€™t even out just makes me feel worse.
68: whatā€™s winter like where you live? >> Cold.
69: what are your favorite board games? >> I donā€™t have one.
70: have you ever used a ouija board? >> No, never got a chance.
71: whatā€™s your favorite kind of tea? >> Ginger, peppermint, etc.
72: are you a person who needs to note everything down or else youā€™ll forget it? >> No.
73: what are some of your worst habits? >> Picking at my lips, mainly.
74: describe a good friend of yours without using their name or gendered pronouns. >> ---
75: tell us about your pets! >> ---
76: is there anything you should be doing right now but arenā€™t? >> No.
77: pink or yellow lemonade? >> Either is fine.
78: are you in the minion hateclub or fanclub? >> I canā€™t stand them.
79: whatā€™s one of the cutest things someone has ever done for you? >> ---
80: what color are your bedroom walls? did you choose that color? if so, why? They are the colour of Nothing and I did not choose it. I rent. <-- ā€œthe colour of Nothingā€ is exactly what the fuck it is.
81: describe one of your friendā€™s eyes using the most abstract imagery you can think of. >> ---
82: are/were you good in school? >> I was great as a child. Once puberty (and trauma) hit everything went out the window.
83: whatā€™s some of your favorite album art? >> I donā€™t even know where to begin with this... there are so many album covers I like, but I donā€™t feel like expending all my survey energy on one question, you dig...
84: are you planning on getting tattoos? which ones? >> No, Iā€™m not planning on it.
85: do you read comics? what are your faves? >> Sure. Promethea, Sandman, Preacher, Doctor Strange, various Lovecraftian comics, etc.
86: do you like concept albums? which ones? >> I do like concept albums. Dream Theater has done some pretty interesting ones, and so did Vanden Plas with Christ 0.
87: what are some movies you think everyone should watch at least once in their lives? >> ---
88: are there any artistic movements you particularly enjoy? >> I had been reblogging a lot of art recently that had a similar look and feel to it, and I was wondering if they were related, like part of a certain art movement... and then I was watching a Youtube video about the movie Silence the other day and I accidentally found my answer in that video! It was the Baroque movement. I really like the feel of some of those pieces, particularly the darker-hued paintings.
89: are you close to your parents? >> No.
90: talk about your one of you favorite cities. >> What can I possibly say about New Orleans that hasnā€™t already been said by more poetic minds than mine, tbh.
91: where do you plan on traveling this year? >> I donā€™t plan on travelling this year, thanks to the whole pandemic business.
92: are you a person who drowns their pasta in cheese or a person who barely sprinkles a pinch? >> Er, somewhere in the middle...?
93: whatā€™s the hairstyle you wear the most? >> I only have one hairstyle.
94: who was the last person you know to have a birthday? >> Somebody on one of the Discord servers Iā€™m in.
95: what are your plans for this weekend? >> Weā€™re going to the Wayland house for the first time since... early March, I think. Besides that, just the farmerā€™s market and grocery shopping as usual.
96: do you install your computer updates really quickly or do you procrastinate on them a lot? >> My computers run on SSDs, so it takes like 2 minutes to do system updates and Iā€™m right back in business. No point in procrastinating that.
97: myer briggs type, zodiac sign, and hogwarts house? >> I get a different result every time I take a Myers-Briggs test (which makes sense to me). My Sun sign is Gemini. My Hogwarts house is Slytherin, but being complex-natured like any other human being I know that I straddle both Slytherin and Ravenclaw.
98: whenā€™s the last time you went hiking? did you enjoy it? >> I donā€™t remember the last time I went on a true hike. I would love to do that at some point, but aside from the M6 trail (which is just... parallel to a highway and not all that scenic), all the good hiking places in this region require me to be driven to the location first.
99: list some songs that resonate to your soul whenever you hear them. >> Death Is the Road to Awe by Clint Mansell, Walker by Master Boot Record, Ich dachte schon by Selig, Little Black Submarines by the Black Keys, Nothing As It Seems by Pearl Jam.
100: if you were presented with two buttons, one that allows you to go 5 years into the past, the other 5 years into the future, which one would you press? why? >> No.

ā™” ( Rip to our bones)
Send me a ā€˜ ā™” ā€™ and iā€™ll talk about what type of relationship i could see our muses having
(Iā€™ll just make a copy of this for Ludwig and John to put on their own respective blogs. Though Iā€™m not certain all of them would meet or get to know each other.)
Launchpad + Dewey
A brotherly bond that would practically rival that of his with Huey and Louie. Though he knows that Launchpad likes to try and spend his time with everyone, heā€™s usually ready to throw down when it comes to any sort of gig the two might have planned. Whether it be binge watching stuff, reading comics, discussing about fictional stuff, some outside sports here and there, and the like! Launchpadā€™s like the older brother Dewey wanted, instead of the one that he got, but he still loves Huey too. He just vibes more with Launchpad. Together, youā€™ve got an unstoppable, unforgettable duo!
Falcon + Dewey
(Taking in some parts of their first meeting and todayā€™s episode) Just like how Falcon wants nothing to do with Dewey, the same goes for him. Itā€™s not really the stiff and tight beaked personality that Falcon has, but just for how the both of them were eventually risking the otherā€™s life by dropping them off of a large building (probably a small skyscraper to be honest). The boy isnā€™t traumatized by that, heā€™s been through worse, but associating himself with someone whoā€™s always looking for that money, and somehow keeps pairing himself up with Mark Beaks unknowingly is probably someone thatā€™s good to avoid.
Flintheart + Dewey
ā€œOof, itā€™s that one weird old guy that keeps trying to kill my great uncle and is.... super obsessed with him.ā€, Dewey would say before veering his head away from looking at the other. He can respect Flintheartā€™s tenacity and perseverance, after all, heā€™s gone through some of the same problems about not being taken seriously or given what he wants even though heā€™s probably either earned it or itā€™s common courtesy. but what he canā€™t is the otherā€™s want for vengeance. So what if Scrooge made Flintheart what he is? He should be thanking the guy and moving on with his life, do some stuff that can be good to others instead of nasty plots and schemes on how to take out the recently richest duck in the world. And Glomgold can try whatever scheme heā€™s got in store for him, but Dewey will just have to be extra careful on whatā€™s really important.
Launchpad + Duckworth
Something that was definitely transparent but revealed to show more consistency than some other unlikely pairings. It probably wouldnā€™t be the case hadnā€™t Duckworth died, since that opened his mind more to possibilities, and probably his time in the Afterlife did make him lose some empathy for a bit. However, by interacting and learning more about Launchpad, heā€™s recovered some of what he lost, and learning to enjoy the things that he had and didnā€™t have before. That and something else blossomed between them. Whenever they might have been conversing with each other, heā€™s started to find himself somewhat liking the duckā€™s qualities, and some of his faults even. Normally that wouldnā€™t have happened before, but then again, heā€™s grateful for how Launchpad does put up with him when he isnā€™t feeling too optimistic. Now he prefers to spend time with the pilot and is able to have fun once again.
Falcon + Duckworth
They are pretty similar in some aspects, which would normally be something that would help draw some people together, but not these two. Duckworth definitely has the edge on giving out more quippy remarks that the falcon may not appreciate, and is more than willing to go into a back and forth session if the other wants to participate. Yet another part where they may diverge is how they deal with loyalty and trust. Duckworthā€™s more devoted to those that are willing to trust others, be honest with people, and heā€™ll gladly do what he can to defend those that need a hand. Falcon is more os someone who doesnā€™t share those interests and beliefs, which does put them at odds with each other as Duckworth might ask,Ā ā€œWhere is your loyalty? Do not say that it is as transparent as me for I can solidify mine. You can follow suit.ā€
Flintheart + Duckworth
One of the most unlikely people to really interact with each other, especially after how Duckworth died by Flintheartā€™s plan, indirectly. He still doesnā€™t like the idea of trusting and letting the other go free with what heā€™s done, but he also wonā€™t take out the duckā€™s life as revenge for that would just be giving in to his anger and hatred over the years. Something that should not be listened to as taking oneā€™s life as payment for anotherā€™s should never be the first option. If he wants to be better and not stoop down to Flintheartā€™s level, heā€™ll just have to let the duck be until he messes with him and his family again. However, now that heā€™s getting a bit of fun out of this, maybe taunting Flintheart with his own voice and physique wouldnā€™t be such a bad idea...
Launchpad + Fenton
ā€œIs that really supposed to be some sort of joke? Because itā€™s not funny, Launchpad.ā€ He really dislikes how Launchpad keeps trying to think of him as a robot, and heā€™ll keep trying to prove it to the other to get him to stop it. Fenton probably doesnā€™t know that it could be just mild teasing from how they first met, but it should make sense since Launchpad met him when he was Fenton first and Gizmoduck second. But, he does like it whenever they do veer away from that topic and talk more about mechanical things, and maybe a little more, considering that Fenton himself is a little bit of a superhero fan and has some stuff o his own to share with Launchpad. Though he may not like Darkwing Duck....
Falcon + Fenton
Itā€™s certainly going to have some gray lines of tension here since their introduction is not going off on a good start. While he can commend the otherā€™s dedication to their work, he canā€™t really defend or appreciate how Falcon likes to see everything so bluntly, black and white, but heā€™s somehow the only gray out of all of this. Itā€™s selfish, bias, and more importantly, rude to otherā€™s and how they could be able to change, but for Fenton, he just sees this as Falconā€™s excuse to continue doing what he does. It might be something the professional tells himself to get away from facing the truth for the things that heā€™s done for his previous employers. Itā€™s one thing to put the blame on others, but itā€™s another to try and separate yourself like youā€™re better than them but just do what youā€™re paid to do, and thatā€™s what keeps them from having any really positive conversation. Sure, they can make fun of Mark all they want, but that isnā€™t going to make the problem between them go away.
Flintheart + Fenton
Flintheart would probably be the last person Fenton should really interact with, if not him then Mark, but given how heā€™s always willing to lend others a hand with his ideas or just be an overall nice person, somethingā€™s bound to go wrong. He hasnā€™t really gotten any instances where he could see Flintheartā€™s evilness and hatred on full display, and the faux funeral for Scrooge doesnā€™t really count since he only got to see Flintheart just do some disrespectful dancing. Besides that, he tries to believe that everyone, even Flintheart can change for the better too if they want to, like those anger management classes, and heā€™d be happy to help the rick mallard with that, but working for him might be something that he wonā€™t allow. Given that Glomgold Industries probably doesnā€™t have that many appealing aspects to them and he rather not feel like heā€™s betraying Scrooge and Gyro after what happened with the Waddleduck incident.
Jim, Negaduck, Black Arts, Garbonzo, Brandon, and Rubber Chicken are down below:
Launchpad + Jim
Now who coulda saw this one coming?! A washed up star and his favorite number 1 fan that still remembers him upon the countless others that have forgotten him? You bet that Jim would love to get a taste of what it feels like to be a star again, even if itā€™s from one person. However, he canā€™t let that go to his head as this is practically the only one heā€™s got left that really cares, despite all the fainting. But, it might not hurt to have someone to bump heads with when it comes to returning to his role, for real this time...
Flintheart + Jim
While trying to give the real life Darkwing Duck gig a try, he finds that itā€™s definitely not as easy as it was on set, but thatā€™s to be expected. Real life isnā€™t a game and neither is the battle between good and evil! Sure, heā€™d loved to be sponsored and given money by anyone that would fund a revival campaign of Darkwing Duck again, but he also cannot let the actions of Flitnheart Glomgold go unpunished. He doesnā€™t care how many times heā€™d have to put the duck in jail as long as it gets Flintheart to stop trying to be such a terrible member of society, and maybe not find out who he is in the process so he could get some of that good green moolah.
Launchpad + Negaduck
A reverse palette swapped Darkwing Duck thatā€™s also sporting some different liberties taken on the iconic Darkwing Duck design? It might be a little odd, but it could be interesting that the guy chose a more striking set of colors compared to the cool and night patterned colors of the original. However, the black does help and oh wait, this guyā€™s going on about stuff that hasnā€™t happened here? Whatā€™s a Negaverse? Why does this guy sound like he knows him already? Ah, itā€™s just a weird Darkwing fanboy.Ā
All of this is most likely going to get Launchpad put on Negaduckā€™s permanent to kill list, and he doesnā€™t care how long it takes, heā€™ll abuse and bruise the until he can get that satisfying moment, but it may take a while, and patience is not something Drake really has a lot of. Not for idiots in his book anyway.
Falcon + Negaduck
A well know Public Enemy in one universe and practically the ruler of his city in his own, up against some orderly goon that knows how to handle himself in a fight against many odds and situations? Negaduck may like the fact that Falcon can handle himself, but heā€™s not gonna like it when Falcon uses that to prevent him from doing whatever he wants. Hopefully Falcon can count those with unchecked rage again, as this condiment colored duck is another one of those with anger issues.
Flintheart + Negaduck
It would be Elegance in Violence, but for these two? Nah, just go wreck stuff up and donā€™t care about it. Drake can really admire the rich duckā€™s taste in senseless violence, but doesnā€™t like that he sets his sights on someone so low like Scrooge McDuck. Whatā€™s there to that has been thatā€™s dangerous? He could probably take on the whole family with enough planning and resources, so why hasnā€™t Flintheart done that already? Another thing that might separate them is how that Flintheart isnā€™t as willing to go through with his plans unlike Negaduck. When Drake wants you gone, heā€™ll try to find a way and he doesnā€™t care how as long as itā€™s got class and you know heā€™s the one that killed you. He wonā€™t cower, and even if he did, thereā€™s usually a plan behind that.
Launchpad + Black Arts
It would seem pretty unlikely for Launchpad to try and befriend a Beagle Boy, most people wouldnā€™t given their family background and reputation, but Black Arts is happy to have someone outside of his family or his teacher to talk to. It gives him a chance to have a life, a mind outside of what his Ma wants for him, and while his teacher is cool, itā€™s always good to have more people to talk to to feel less isolated from the world. Sure, heā€™s got the internet to help him on that, but for face to face communication or interaction... not so much. Still, he like Launchpad and is willing to show him some magic someday!
Duckworth + Black Arts
Itā€™d be really against his liking to let Duckworth get away with the embarrassment that happened the night he was summoned back by him, but he canā€™t help that for some reason, the ghost is apparently getting him to laugh, talk about stuff that normally he wouldnā€™t spill, and overall trying his hardest to ridicule him, but still treat him differently than the rest of his family. What, did the demon like him or something? And why did feel like he was having a good time with the butler? Maybe itā€™s probably because he didnā€™t have someone to fill that father figure role in his life...
Flintheart + Black Arts
Now this is probably his first real employer, but that might not last long once he knows more about Flintheart like from what his mother would tell him. Then again, he got a glimpse of that first hand at Scroogeā€™s birthday party. Black Arts is really iffy about this loose nut as while heā€™s loaded, the things he tries to do are far out of any sane personā€™s range of commitment, and he feels like he should do the same.
Launchpad + Garbonzo
While they havenā€™t met yet, Garbonzo would find Launchpad to be really an oddity of sorts for how sunny he can be, but still like that about him. Maybe not some of the more oafish parts, but then again, he can be clumsy too at times with himself or others. However, heā€™s wondering how Launchpad has been helping Black Arts in terms of creating friendships with other people, and even more interested in whatever magic is surrounding Launchpad. Itā€™s not normal, and it doesnā€™t seem like there would be any good to come from it either.
Launchpad + Brandon
Now this is an annoyance for the buzzard as he would really want to try and stay away from the clumsy pilot. A sunny personality like his is nice, but that isnā€™t what someone like Brandon deserves, and he knows it. So, the best way for them to still be them is to stay away from each other, as the more and more that Launchpad might be around Brandon, the more and more Brandon will try to push him away. Hopefully bringing to light that not everyone will be your friend, or want to anyway.
Launchpad + Rubber Chicken
Whenever Clovis will meet Launchpad, either OG or a new DT17 reboot, itā€™s most likely going to be that one tough but simple minded goof with his thin and nimble worrisome ward. Well, Clovis isnā€™t really the ward type, but you get what I mean. Heā€™s most likely going to open up Rubber Chicken to taking on new dangers if he can get past tackling the fear of them, and have someone to talk to for advice whenever he needs it as Clovis is a nervous wreck.

Welcome all!
If youā€™re reading this, Iā€™m assuming youā€™re familiar with my work as either an artist, cosplayer, writer or any of the other creative things I do. Recently, I had been asked about some of the work that I do, and I thought a fun way to just that was to fill out a few questionnaires. Here I talk about some of the high and low points of doing what I do, what inspires me, and my process of creativity.
For those who are only interested in certain segments, Iā€™ve broken the article into the following sections for you to easily maneuver your way throughout the piece: Art, cosplay, writing, and questions asked by you.
I know Iā€™m no professional and compared to a lot of others I donā€™t have as outstanding an amount of followers, but if this article can help inspire at least one artist to try something new or learn something they didnā€™t know, well, thatā€™s good enough for me! I hope you enjoy!
Art
When did you get into art?
Iā€™ve been drawing as long as I can remember, but I do recall middle school in particular being the time that I really started pursuing art. I had to choose between volleyball and art club after school, and guess which one I picked. It wasnā€™t just academics either. My notebooks were full of fan art of mostly Link and Zelda, but you could find some Kirby, PokĆ©mon, and Naruto scattered in there as well.
Show us your oldest piece of art you have on hand.
Tumblr media
Yeah. Itā€™sā€¦ Something.
What defines your artistic style?
I think the faces of the characters I draw distinguish my art. I always have a certain way of drawing the eyes, ears, and other features. I always give my females more prominent eyelashes thanĀ males as well. Certain clothing as well ā€” The way I draw capes and hoods are distinct. Not to mention when designing my own clothes, I tend to use similar patterns.
Do you practice other styles/have you tried other styles in the past?
I occasionally dabble outside my comfort zone. Iā€™m not necessarily a huge fan of the ā€œCal-Artsā€ style, but Iā€™ve tried it every now and then, especially when creating fan art for shows like Steven Universe, The Amazing World of Gumball, and Amphibia. I donā€™t really do it too often, but Iā€™ve made a piece for my portfolio mimicking several art styles from a variety of different shows just to demonstrate that I can do it if Iā€™d like to.
What levels of artistic education have you had?
Honestly, just high school. I thought I was going to college for digital illustrations but it turned out communication/graphic design was totally different. I actually got into that because I could draw when not many other people in that field could. Of course, Iā€™m always interested in learning outside of school. I learn through watching other artists on social media, seeing how they create their work. Just watching a speed draw can help so much! The way I learn the most, however, is just by doing. Practice, practice, practice!Ā
Show us at least one picture you drew or sketched recently that you did not put on a public site.
Iā€™ve been doing a lot of Fire Emblem doodles for my new sticker line, so hereā€™s Setsuna. Honestly, I just like drawing bust portraits like this.
Tumblr media
What is your favorite piece that you have done?
I canā€™t just pick one! Iā€™ve drawn over 900 things since I first joined DeviantArt (and Iā€™ve been drawing even before then), you want me to pick just one? Haha, Iā€™ll narrow it down to three of my favorites (in no particular order):
Tumblr media
I love this one because it was like the first cute drawing of Ivysaur Iā€™ve ever done. Ivysaur was always a tricky pokĆ©mon for me to draw, but this was the first time I feel like I nailed it. Ivysaur also happens to be one of my absolute favorites, so thatā€™s a plus.
Tumblr media
This is Minerva, a Guardian from my fantasy stories. Every time I drew her prior, I could never quite get the look I wanted. This was the one that I really liked and so I colored it and am very happy with how it turned out.
Tumblr media
I donā€™t know why I just love this drawing I did of Dimitri fromĀ Three Houses.Ā I think its the eyes and hair. And the color contrast ā€” especially in the original ink sketch (that I hung up over my craft table.) I just love it.
What is your least favorite piece that you have done?
Again, you want just one? Haha, too many failures. Iā€™ll be fair, though, and post three of those as well.
Tumblr media
Hereā€™s one from my early days. I was trying so hard to get the hair all detailed like and instead it came out looking like gross looking veins. Not to mention how atrocious the proportions were. Oh man, Iā€™m sorry past me, I know you tried.
Tumblr media
Hereā€™s one I was so proud of: I copied the official art forĀ Twilight PrincessĀ and thought it came out amazing. So amazing I titled the piece ā€œAwesomeful Link.ā€ Yeah. Um. Nope.
Tumblr media
Hereā€™s a more recent one that Iā€™m not too pleased with. I was so excited about the latest batch ofĀ Steven UniverseĀ episodes (which I would later learn were a big bunch of filler episodes and that didnā€™t make anything better) I drew Pearl reciting her ā€˜big lineā€™ of the trailer. I tried to mix styles and I tried something different with the eyes and all in all it just came outā€¦ Meh.
What do you like most about your art?
I like the faces that I draw. Theyā€™re always the most fun and I think they come out the best. I especially love the eyes, I go into so much detail on them (even though theyā€™re usually so small when I print them.) Iā€™ve had issues in the past where I made all of my characters look like they had the same face, but I feel Iā€™ve been doing a lot better at individualizing the face of each character and that makes it all the more fun as well.
What do you like least about your art?
The hands. Sometimes I draw them well, but I still struggle hard and sometimes it really shows. For chibi drawings, I donā€™t really care as much, but on my more ā€œseriousā€ art, I get a little bummed when Iā€™ve got a wonky hand hanging off their wrists. Feet also sometimes give me a bit of trouble, but usually only when I do poses that involve more movement, which is why I sometimes make my art stiffer and I donā€™t like doing that either.
Have you ever considered taking commissions?
I do take commissions. In fact, Iā€™d love to take more if it were possible.
Are you looking to pursue a career in art?
I do it part-time right now. Iā€™m satisfied doing commissions and artist tables at local conventions. I think Iā€™d like to pursue writing more than art, but I do love art just as well, so part-time is perfect for me.
What do you like drawing the most?
As I mentioned before, faces. I love drawing facial expressions, I feel like itā€™s the very core of a character. Itā€™s the first thing I notice when I look at anyoneā€™s art, so I always go all out on my own. I also like drawing hair and wrinkles in clothing. I used to be really obsessed with wrinkles and it would always look like my characters didnā€™t iron their laundry, but Iā€™ve definitely toned it down since then, haha.
All in all, I like drawing human characters the best ā€” or humanoid. Elves, fairies, merfolk; I love them the most. I like drawing animals too, but not as much as people.Ā
What do you like drawing the least?
Once again my answer is hands. They are still as difficult to draw as the day I started.
Backgrounds are also not enjoyable for me to draw. Itā€™s an important part of a piece, but I get so bored drawing anything thatā€™s not a character ā€” which is why youā€™ll probably notice in a lot of my art that I do a lot of very minimal backgrounds. Iā€™ve been trying very hard not to just take stock photos anymore (with the exception of my Mythical Month art as theyā€™re meant to be stickers,) and Iā€™ve been using games like Skyrim and Breath of the Wild as inspiration with their gorgeous scenery.Ā
Do you draw more fanart or original art? If fanart, what fandom do you draw the most of?
I post a lot more fan art than original ā€” at least I used to, but I also think I have expanded in sharing my original art more and more with my Mythical Months/Mondays. I guess maybe Iā€™d say about half and half.
What medium/program do you use the most in your art?
Digitally I always use Photoshop. Always. As for traditional art, Iā€™ve been using Copic knock-offs (Iā€™m still learning, so Iā€™d rather not waste the money) and the Sakura Micron pens for my ink sketches. Iā€™ve really been enjoying them, actually, itā€™s very therapeutic. However, no matter digitally or traditionally, I always, ALWAYS start with a pencil. I like mechanical pencils, I donā€™t like traditional #2 pencils anymore. The thin lead helps me keep control better.
How would you rank your art? (poor, mediocre, good, etc.)
I always say I think my art is ā€œabove average.ā€ I know itā€™s not bad, but I think it could always use improvement. I donā€™t know if Iā€™ll ever get to a place where I think my art is phenomenal, but Iā€™m content with it, it makes me happy, and thatā€™s all that matters.
List at least one of your ā€œartspirations.ā€
My art style was greatly inspired by Naruto, Fire Emblem, and Zelda. I always liked more proper body proportions with that hint of anime inspiration. I like bigger eyes on my characters because they help convey emotion so much better, but I also donā€™t like the oversized baby eyes outside of the occasional chibi style. Avatar: The Last Airbender was also a great influence since the creators did exactly what I like to do and execute it wonderfully.
What do you think you could stand to improve on?
I feel like I can always improve on everything that I do in my art. There are things Iā€™m good at, but I donā€™t feel like Iā€™ve mastered anything in particular. Then thereā€™s hands and feet again which I definitely need to work on. Lastly, motion. I want to be able to draw more fluid character motions. Iā€™ve been working on it with my original art that I donā€™t post online, but hopefully Iā€™ll start incorporating it into all my work.
Do you have a shameful art past? (recolor sprite comics, tracing art, etc.?)
Ugh, yes, YES! I admit I was so bad at first, but I also think thatā€™s just how we learn. I used to do a lot of tracing. I started first just full-on tracing images off my computer ā€” Thatā€™s right, Iā€™d put the paper up to the computer and trace it like that. Then I started using bases, which was better because at least I had to draw all the details like hair and clothing by myself. Then I finally worked up the courage to stop using them completely. Iā€™d use references, but I would force myself to figure it out by eye rather than copy it straight from the source. Iā€™m happy to say I havenā€™t been tracing since my late middle school- early high school years.
Cosplay
How many years have you cosplayed?
My first cosplay was when I was fourteen, and Iā€™m twenty-five at the time of writing this article, so eleven years now. Wow.
How did you get into cosplaying?
I honestly donā€™t know. I was invited to a convention where I heard people dressed up and was like ā€œhey, I want to try that!ā€ I guess it was because I didnā€™t really do Halloween as a kid and I was so deathly terrified of costumed characters as a toddler that I never took an interest until high school.
How many cosplays have you done?
Thatā€™s funny, you want me to remember how many cosplays Iā€™ve ever done. A lot. According to my photo collection, Iā€™ve done about 60 different cosplays (59 exactly if Iā€™m counting correctly.)
What was your first cosplay and why did you choose it?
My first cosplay was Osaka from Azumanga Daioh in her blue summer uniform. Azumanga Daioh was my second ever manga series and my cousin and I were so obsessed with it. She even went as Yukari with me to the convention (though only, like, two people knew who we were.) Tomo is probably my favorite character, but I related personally more to Osaka, being the air-head that I am. I also didnā€™t have to really style my hair (because that was an era before I used wigs.)
Tumblr media
What is your favorite cosplay youā€™ve done so far?
Itā€™s a tie between my Trainee Link (Hyrule Warriors) costume and my Royal Guard Link (Zelda: Breath of the Wild)Ā costume. Both are alternative costumes for one of my all-time favorite characters that I hand made all the really detailed pieces all from scratch. Link has always been a special character for me to cosplay, but these two are my favorites.
What is your least favorite youā€™ve cosplayed?
Rapunzel (Tangled). I was obsessed with her at the time which is why I wanted to cosplay her originally, but my dress was not the best and I didnā€™t look good as her. At least I think so. It was the only costume that made me feel insecure.
What cosplay is the most uncomfortable or troublesome?
Okay, I love this costume and character to pieces, but my gosh the struggles I go through for Pearl (Steven Universe). Blue Diamond (Steven Universe)Ā is the worst in terms of how long it takes me to put my makeup on, but Pearl is right behind her at about 2 hours being my best time. However, the thing that makes Pearl more troublesome to wear is one thing and one thing alone: armsocks.
They look great and prevent you from having to dab makeup all over your body, but I literally couldnā€™t even hit the home button on my cellphone and itā€™s not like I could just take them off like gloves. Theyā€™re attached at your middle and putting them on is a hassle on its own. Getting your fingers into each tiny socket is so time-consuming. Now imagine this while also being coated in body paint. Plus, having white be the color of the stockings, you have to be conscious of everything you touch because it will stain and show. Because of all this, I refuse to use the restroom dressed as Pearl, and while that is ā€œin character,ā€ it is not healthy and totally NOT recommended you do that.
What is your most comfortable cosplay?
During the winter, Ravio (Zelda: A Link Between Worlds)Ā for sure. Itā€™s like wearing a giant snuggie. However, in summer, it does get hot very quickly (which is why I literally only wear biker shorts and a tank underneath if I ever do take it out on a hot day), so I only wear it in summer if I know there will be AC. Heatstroke is a real thing. Miss Frizzle (Magic School Bus)Ā is probably the best all-year cosplay in terms of comfort. Itā€™s just a dress, stockings, and a wig really.
But in all honesty, most of my cosplays are relatively comfortable. Thereā€™s really nothing that Iā€™ve been so uncomfortable that itā€™s made my physically ill or scarred me physically. My health is important to me, and should safety should always come first.
How do you research the cosplay before you make it?
I look up lots of reference images. I need an image of the front and back, though if itā€™s not available, I just improvise based on the images I do have on hand. After that, I kind of just wing it.
Do you sew your cosplays yourself?
A good majority of them, yes. There are a few exceptions to this, though: My Disney princesses are all bought since I use them in performances and want them to be durable if children come and tug on the outfit. Pearl, also being a performance cosplay, I did buy as well. For her second reformation outfit (the sleeveless with the ribbon) I got specially commissioned to look and fit me just right whereas her movie/future appearance (jacket and mom-jeans) I literally found at a thrift store. I also love to find costume pieces at thrift stores. Whether I use them as is or make alterations, they make life so much easier when you make a good find for a cheap price. Leni Loud (Loud House) is probably my favorite thrift/sew hybrid. I found a base dress, altered the top and added strap sleeves, put lace around the edges, found a blingy pair of sunglasses, bought earrings and painted them, and made bows for sandals I already had. The most expensive part of that cosplay was the wig I bought from Arda (and itā€™s always worth it to buy from them in my opinion.)
When I make a costume completely from scratch (like Ravio, Thranduil, any of my Link cosplays) are when I really love the costume and character and want to take on a challenge and bring it to life myself. They also tend to have pieces that canā€™t be altered from your everyday clothing, but that just makes me work harder and learn more!
How did you learn to sew?
My grandmother taught me how. Osaka was my first cosplay, but my mom altered it from a tee shirt we found at a thrift store and a lucky skirt find. Kabuto Yakushi (Naruto) was the first cosplay I made from scratch (and I won best novice at the convention I wore it to ā€” even with my terrible wig, haha.) She showed me how to use patterns when we made that and my Ayame Sohma cosplay, but after that, I scrapped using patterns and I basically just eyeball everything now. Itā€™s totally not recommended, but Iā€™m a little weirdo and just prefer to do things the way I do. Still, I wouldnā€™t be able to use a sewing machine if it werenā€™t for her. Thanks, Nanny!
Tumblr media
Do you make your own props?
Most of them. I donā€™t really use props too often as I find them cumbersome to lug around a convention (which is how I thought of the Fire Emblem, Gravity Falls, and Skyrim book boxes to store your stuff and add some extra flair to a costume.) The few props I have made include Linkā€™s sword, his trainee shield, his original shield from Zelda 1, and Sorenā€™s Wind Tome (which I used for Laurent (Fire Emblem: Awakening) because I didnā€™t finish Soren (Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance)Ā yetā€¦) Then thereā€™s my prized cosplay prop; Victreebel for James (PokĆ©mon). That was all thanks to my fleece hat business in high school that taught me the skills to build that thing.
I actually think the only prop I store-bought was my Hylian Shield because it was so lightweight and easy to carry, plus I was dreading doing all those details at the time. Maybe one day Iā€™ll make it from scratch, but for now, Iā€™m content with my store-bought.
Do you style your own wigs?
Yes. I have been improving my styling skills a lot more since I first started. It was always a more difficult task for me, but Iā€™ve been practicing more and more. The first one that I attempted on my own was my short-haired Rapunzel. That was basically just giving it a haircut, though. My first real styling challenge was Breath of the Wild Link. It took a long time, but I actually had fun figuring out his hair.
For most of my costumes, itā€™s really just the bangs that need that extra pop, to which I use Got2B gel and spray. Does the trick every time and keeps everything in place. For those who are wondering, though: No, I did not style Pearlā€™s wig. I am not ready for that kind of gravity-defying styling. That was all E-Bay.
What skill has been most useful for making your cosplay?
Well, sewing mostly, but other skills that have come in handy for me personally have been painting, crafting, makeup, styling, and overall decorating. Probably other stuff too, just nothing more I can think of off the top of my head.
What is the hardest thing when making a cosplay?
Probably figuring out how things connect. This is the main reason Iā€™m timid when it comes to armor. Iā€™ve been getting better, but Iā€™m still having trouble figuring out how everything attaches and how to put on these kinds of costumes, which is why my Skyrim Elven Armor has been put on hold.
What was the biggest screw up youā€™ve had making a cosplay?
Iā€™m not sure if I had any major crisisā€™ when it comes to making cosplays, but Iā€™ve certainly had my fair share of irritating mishaps and mistakes. I canā€™t tell you how many times Iā€™ve accidentally sewn the sleeves on a costume inside out about 4 times before I finally got it right.
Iā€™ve cut holes in my clothing, Iā€™ve sewn sleeves on too tight, and Iā€™ve even completed a hat that took hours just for it to wind up being too small when I put a wig on. I guess most of the major issues Iā€™ve had with sewing are measurement issues, so my advice to you is to always measure and try on your costume as you go. Donā€™t wait until the day of the con to try out your new cosplay.
How often do you injure yourself while making a cosplay?
Not too often, I occasionally prick my finger with my sewing needles, but I havenā€™t had too many serious injuries. I think the worst was when I slashed my thumb with the exacto-knife when making my first shield for Link. Needless to say, there was a lot of blood.
Do you try to stay cheap or do you splurge on materials?
I am a frugal soul; if I can save, I will. Thatā€™s why I thrift so much. However, on a costume Iā€™m really passionate about, I will spend more to ensure the quality. For example, I spent a little more going to a more shimmery material for Royal Guard Link. It cost about $50 for the blue and red material, which to me, is a lot (and that was with coupons). However, the results were 100% worth it. PS, Michaels and Joannā€™s ALWAYS have coupons. I totally recommend downloading both apps.
I also stand by that with wigs and contacts. I love Arda, their quality is great, but they are more expensive than Amazon. Contacts I donā€™t mind spending more for as well since the quality is VERY important in this case; they are going on your eyes, after all.
However, as I said, I am absolutely not opposed to going cheap. If you can make it work, make it work. My Nyo!Austria (Hetalia) cosplay came out very cute and it was literally made from bedsheets. From using mostly thrifted and recycled materials, a lot of my cosplays came to around an overall price of around $30. Some of these costumes include Mega Gardevoir (Pokemon),Ā Tomoyo Sakagami (Clannad), Spyro (Spyro the Dragon), andĀ Luan Loud (Loud House.)
Cosplay can be totally affordable, you just have to be creative and think a little outside the box sometimes to make it work.
Have you ever cosplayed with a partner or group?
Yes, a few times. Iā€™d love to do more group cosplays, but we all have to think of something we all like. Luckily, two of my very good friends decided they would dress up as Steven Universe and Amethyst to go with my Pearl this year for Comic-Con and it was such a great experience! Iā€™m trying to convince them to do others as well, such as The Loud House and The Magic School Bus with me as well, haha.
Tumblr media
Do you try to act in character?
Always: but I donā€™t always succeed. It really depends on the character. Pearl I could roleplay for days. Itā€™s probably because I connect so much with her and performing as her doesnā€™t hurt either. Dee Dee Magno Hall says her favorite lines to say are peoples names, and after giving it a shot myself, I totally see why. I even practiced Garnets ā€œStronger than youā€ monologue in Pearlā€™s voice and tone (in case no one volunteered to sing during our karaoke event) and it always makes my friends laugh.
The characters that stump me a little more are the more serious characters I choose to portray; Link, Laurent, Thranduil (the Hobbit), Belle (Beauty and the Beast),Ā just to name a few. Iā€™m kind of a goofball/airhead so those characters clash with my personality a little bit, but I am getting better. Blue Diamond is surprisingly the easiest of these types to stay in character for.
That being said, I love being the outgoing, oddball characters. Like I said, Pearl is second nature to me, as well as Anna from Frozen. Back in my Hetalia days, Austria and America were my go-to guys. I could act as them forever, and my friends and I literally lived as them for a while with how much we role-played. Most of the Disney Princesses itā€™s pretty easy for me to stay in character, especially (like I said before) Anna, Sofia the First, and Merida.
How do you react to cosplayers dressed as a character from the same anime/game/etc?
If there are some good character opportunities, I will role-play on the spot, but more often than not I will ask if we could all get a picture together. There were so many fun interactions with other Steven Universe cosplayers when my friends and I did our little group, but one of my favorite interactions was probably when I was dressed as Laurent and I stumbled across a Miriel cosplayer and I just shouted out ā€œMOM! I FINALLY FOUND YOU!ā€
Do you try to duplicate your characterā€™s expressions, walk, movements, etc?
I can talk the talk (mostly), but I have more trouble walking the walk. Iā€™ve been trying to replicate movements better, but facial expressions I have trouble with (ironic as itā€™s my favorite part of drawing.) Iā€™m not as photogenic as Iā€™d like to be, as you could probably tell by most of my pictures being the same face, but I definitely am striving to improve on that.
What was your funniest experience of acting in character?
Okay, thereā€™s a lot that I could share, and eventually, I want to do an article solely on cosplay ā€œin-characterā€ experiences, but the one I HAVEĀ to share right now is a recent experience when I was dressed as Ariel fromĀ The Little Mermaid.
I was performing at the family day event my church helps out at my pastorā€™s air force base as Ariel, and after my sing-a-long, my makeup was a little smudged. I asked a volunteer where the restroom was so I could touch up before I headed back out to the crowds. I thought heā€™d take me to a private restroom, but he brought me to the public one where there were families waiting outside. They noticed and the dad joked ā€œSee? Even princesses have to go.ā€ to which I laughed and gave my best Ariel shrug to play along. I went inside, fixed my makeup, and went back outside.
It wasnā€™t long, so the family was still outside the menā€™s room. As I walked by, the manā€™s son shouted out ā€œAriel, congratulations on going pee-pee!ā€ to which I bursted out laughing. Everyone was. I mean, if you gotta congratulate a princess on using the bathroom, you picked the right one! After that, I did explain that I was just putting on makeup but I appreciated his enthusiasm and thanked him for it.
Do you compete in cosplay contests?
All the time. I love them. Whether I win or lose, I always get something out of it. I learn tips from other cosplayers, get to meet so many interesting people, and those times I do win I get prizes which is always nice as well. Most importantly, though, the memories that are made there are the very best part.
Have you won anything?
I have won quite a few. I have three trophies, a medal, a few certificates, and have won a cash prize as well. My first win was my second convention as Kabuto where I won the best novice trophy. My most recent win was for Ravio in August of 2019 with best in show. Itā€™s amazing, I never thought I would get this far, but Iā€™m so grateful for everything Iā€™ve been a part of.
Tumblr media
Again, itā€™s totally not about winning, but Iā€™ll admit that it does feel really nice to have my hard work appreciated. Just as drawing, I still feel like I have a lot of room for improvement in my cosplay, so winning a few contests here and there definitely helps my low self-esteem.
Do you prefer skits or walk-ons?
Iā€™ve only ever done walk-ons. Iā€™ve never had anyone to do a skit with and I donā€™t think I could pull one off on my own. Iā€™d love to do one eventually, but for now, our panels are good enough.
How many friends have you made because of cosplay?
Quite a lot. My Instagram is full of cosplayers Iā€™ve met at conventions and I love seeing their cosplays and drawings, itā€™s all so inspiring!
Do you attend photoshoots and meet-ups outside of conventions?
Occasionally. Iā€™ve never done a professional photoshoot (though one day Iā€™d like to,) but I have attended a few meetups. Iā€™ve done one for Steven Universe, Once Upon a Time, Disney, and I actually accidentally walked into a Fire Emblem: Awakening one dressed as Laurent, so that worked out.
What is the funniest reaction youā€™ve gotten cosplaying from people outside of the community?
The best one was when I was dressed as Link and my friend and I were on the subway. There was a mom and her kid sitting across from us and she pointed to me and said to her child, ā€œLook, an elf! You see? Santaā€™s got his helpers out all year round, so you have to be good!ā€
I also had another wonderful experience outside of a con dressed as Link, though itā€™s not as funny but more just a sweet memory. Itā€™s quite a bit, but luckily Iā€™ve already written about it for Zelda Universe so Iā€™ll just link it here for anyone whoā€™s interested.Ā
Name a few cosplays youā€™re planning to do next:
Iā€™ve got to get Soren (Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance) done soon. Iā€™ve been wanting to do this cosplay forever and I did start it, but I need to finally finish it. Dimitri (Fire Emblem: Three Houses) is also on my list to do next. Not sure about who else I want to do for sure, but some ideas that have floated around in my head have been Tilly Green (Big City Greens), Anna with her Frozen 2 look, Princess Peach (Super Mario), and a Thalmor Mage (Skyrim.)
What is your dream cosplay?
Princess Zelda from Twilight Princess. Iā€™m still too scared to try to cosplay her. I bought a cheap starter costume that I was going to build off of and it wasnā€™t turning out the way I wanted, so I put it off again. One day Iā€™ll feel confident enough to make her costume, but until then Iā€™m totally satisfied with my Link cosplays.
What do you take into consideration when picking a character to cosplay?
Honestly, I just have to love them as a character and the costume itself has to seem do-able. I mean, Iā€™m totally not opposed to buying cosplays if I really want to be a particular character, but like I said, making it means all the more to me. Itā€™s my display of affection towards that character, the creators behind them, and the series as a whole.
Is cosplay serious business for you?
Yes and no. No because I donā€™t do it for money, likes, or internet fame. I do it because itā€™s fun and what I like to do. Yes because I go all out when I cosplay. I do everything I can to get the look the way I want it and I put my blood, sweat, and tears into it when I make them by hand.Ā
What is your favorite thing about cosplay?
Everything: Dressing up as a character I love, roleplaying them, taking photos, just everything! I would do it more often if I could!
How do you want to grow as a cosplayer?
I want to learn how to make more. I want to build armor, I want to learn new makeup and hairstyling techniques, and so much more. Iā€™m happy where I am, but I know I can be better. I will watch others and learn from them and push myself to try new things!
Are you willing to answer questions and help other cosplayers?
Absolutely! I may not be a top dog of cosplaying, but if I can help someone with something Iā€™ve learned along the way, Iā€™m more than happy to help!
Writing
When did you start writing?
I started in middle school as well, I used to write a Nintendo fan fiction called ā€œThe Kirby Show,ā€ where Kirby and his friends would get into wacky sitcom scenarios. They were really just knock-offs of the television shows I used to watch back in the day, but hey, everyoneā€™s gotta start somewhere.
As for my original writing, I started that more in high school. I still wrote a lot of fan fiction at that point, but I was starting to develop my own characters as well. I thought it about time to think of my own creations, and I did. I remember I was in my Godmotherā€™s car when I thought of the main three characters and since then the cast has expanded so much, their stories are much better developed, and the lore is much more solid.
When you were a beginning writer, what did you write primarily? What do you write now, primarily? Ā (i.e. romance, fan-fiction, poetry)
As mentioned before, I started out writing stories about characters that were not my own. Now I do all original writing ā€” well, aside from my work at Zelda Universe. There I get to write about all the unique aspects of one of my favorite game series of all time, so thereā€™s that as well. Writing there has helped me start writing little fandom topical posts for my own blog, such as top 10ā€™s, reviews, and other things along those lines.Ā
How often do you write?
I make it a habit to try and write at least a half-hour a day. If Iā€™m really on a roll, I could write up to a few hours a day before I get burnt out. Even though Iā€™m not always writing, Iā€™m always developing the stories in my head.Ā
When is your favorite time of the day to write?
I always write a half hour before I go to bed. The later it is, the more ideas keep rolling in. With my early hours for work now itā€™s harder to stay up late, but that doesnā€™t stop the ideas. I just gotta push myself a little harder to start earlier to have more time before I need to go to bed.Ā
Do you have a writing muse? If so, who/what?
Not in particular. I always just write about what I like and incorporate different aspects of my life into it. I guess Iā€™m my own muse in that sense? I donā€™t know. I just write what I do know.Ā
What is your most popular lit piece?
Out of all my public pieces, Iā€™d say either my ā€œAnimal Crossing Diariesā€ series or my ā€œEndless Oceanā€ screenplay. ā€œVagabondā€ gets some decent attention as well, which is nice, but honestly, Iā€™d be happy if there was just one person enjoying my work, so I really canā€™t complain.Ā
What is the piece you are currently writing?
Out of my public blog works, ā€œVagabond,ā€ from my Zelda Universe collection Iā€™m working on a character piece on Colin from Twilight Princess.Ā
What is the piece you most recently finished?
On my blog that would be my ā€œTop 10 Favorite Fire Emblem Charactersā€ list. For Zelda Universe, itā€™s actually a piece about Fire Emblem as well ā€” It was DS week, I could write about whatever DS game I wanted to, of course I have to sneak in some Fire Emblem.
What piece are you most proud of?
While ā€œVagabondā€ definitely needs some more work, out of all the pieces Iā€™ve posted publicly, that one is the one I am the proudest of. If anything just for Kurt and Maerwynn. They are two of my favorite characters to play around with and Iā€™m so happy that somehow I was allowed to think these two up.
Tumblr media
In my more private works, my fantasy story is my pride and joy. I feel so blessed to have been able to come up with these characters, and I do hope that someday I will be able to share them, whether on a television screen as Iā€™ve always dreamed of in a novel ofĀ some sort. One day, maybe.Ā
What piece are you most disappointed in?
Itā€™s not so much disappointment, but rather Iā€™ve grown so much in my work, itā€™s very hard for me to look back at my first romance story. Itā€™s a little cheesy and the dialogue is a bit clunky, some of the actions that my characters had performed totally go against what their characters have become now after spending a lot more time with them. Itā€™s something I would love to revisit and maybe even go public with, but itā€™s going to take a lot of work.Ā
From all of your stories, who is/are your favorite character(s) and why? (try to limit it to 3)
Since I only published ā€œVagabondā€ online, Iā€™ll stick to characters from this story in particular.
Maerwynn is definitely a favorite because sheā€™s got a lot of qualities that I wish I was bold enough to enact myself. She speaks her mind without a care of what anyone else will think, even if itā€™s blatantly rude. She goes for her goals, even if they may seem ridiculous, and she pursues them with great passion and ferocity. Even with this rough and tough exterior, sheā€™s still got a softer side that sheā€™s just discovering in her new life at the palace. Now, I wouldnā€™t ever recommend being like Maerwynn ALL the time, but thereā€™s definitely is a time and place where we could all be a little bit more like her, I think. Her confidence is the thing I admire most about her.
Kurt I connect with as well. Again, he says all the things that we all wish we could get away with at one point or another, but he knows he can because heā€™s royalty. However, heā€™s got so much going on underneath the surface as well with the complications of his past. Heā€™s learning to open up, connect with others, and understand his feelings. Despite feeling restricted by the laws of his kingdom and the traditions of the royal family, he finds his own way to feel free and be himself.Ā
What is the best compliment you ever got on your writing?
My best friend who Iā€™ve been sharing these stories with for as long as weā€™ve known each other told me the nicest thing not to long ago. I always laugh at myself for going so crazy in-depth with the lore and characters of my fantasy world, but she told me how sheā€™s admired that and the love and care I put into each little thing was what made it so great. It really meant the world to me to hear that and I canā€™t thank her enough for all the love and support throughout the years!Ā
What is your main goal in writing?
I donā€™t know if thereā€™s one main goal in particular, but I suppose if I had to pick just one, it would be to show good through the works of my characters and hope and pray that it inspires others to be like them. Kindness is growing scarce in the world, and if I can just inspire a little bit of it in someone, I suppose thatā€™s all I can ask for.Ā
Have you ever been published?
No, but I am aiming for it. Once I complete Vagabond, give it another revise myself, and hopefully find an editor to give it another look over, Iā€™d love to find someone to publish my book or even self publish on a platform like Amazon. Just something to get my work out there.
Questions asked by you
Who is an artist that you look up to? There are a few artists online that I follow who I just adore their work. Three that come to mind in particular are Bianca Roman-Stumpff, Bellhenge, and TheStarfishFace. Their art is so different from mine, but I think thatā€™s probably why I love it so much (if that makes sense?)Ā  They each have such a unique style and great subject material, I highly recommend giving them a look!
What did you think of ā€œFrozen 2ā€?
I loved it. No secret that Iā€™m a huge Frozen fan, so I was bound to like it. I was actually really nervous about how it was going to end, but I can say (without spoilers) that I am 100% satisfied with how it concluded. Also, Kristoff finally gets the spotlight that he deserves, thank you, Disney.
However, as much as I did love it, I do totally admit I do see flaws in it that could have been improved on. That being said, there was that in the first movie too and I stilled loved it. The characters have enough charm to keep the film entertaining throughout and I just adore them!
What does your family think of your art?
My parents have always encouraged me about my art and I know my grandmother loves it; I gave her a sweater with the art she liked of mine last Christmas and my mom says she wears it all the time. The rest of my family knows and supports my art as well, IĀ  never really had any issue with my small art business and the family.
Any memorable cosplay experiences at a con?
So many. Iā€™ve shared a few before, but I think Iā€™d like to make a whole article on the great cosplay experiences Iā€™ve had! There are so many to talk about and stories to share.
Is there a type of art that you would like to get into? Iā€™ve seen a lot of people doing wood carving and burning, but that looks insanely difficult.
Iā€™ve actually been considering wood burning, haha! It does look difficult, thatā€™s why Iā€™ve been hesitant, but maybe in the future Iā€™d give it a shot. I think theyā€™d make my Skyrim wood pieces look legit.
Iā€™m really up for trying anything. If money wasnā€™t a thing, Iā€™d have tried a lot more by now. In the future, Iā€™d love to try needlepoint as well!Ā
Recently, I had been asked about some of the work that I do, and I thought a fun way to just that was to fill out a few questionnaires. Here I talk about some of the high and low points of doing what I do, what inspires me, and my process of creativity. Welcome all! If you're reading this, I'm assuming you're familiar with my work as either an artist, cosplayer, writer or any of the other creative things I do.
