So I finally got to start my adventure in FF14 with Ta'sha. It took several days to even get set up, and then to get into the server. I chose Malboro, but if I can figure out how to server jump then I will when I want to. I met up with a friend and he jumped from his server to help me out, and since he's been playing for a long ass time, he was level 90. And gave me 40,000 gil to help get me started.

I'm using my xbox 360 controller for this, but I'm glad that I can still use the mouse for a few things I haven't figured out how to use on the controller yet without having to jump through hoops. I got to experience battle, nearly died if I kept just standing there casting spells. And to get used to the aethernet to fast travel. I hope eventually I can find my way around the most important of places.

I don't like the PlayStation very much, though I can appreciate the objectively good things it brought to the industry.

They nailed the controller.

This is a SNES controller:

Four face buttons, two let's call them system buttons, directional inputs, two shoulder buttons.

This is a Gravis PC GamePad (no way!)

Looks an awful lot like a SNES controller with the system and shoulder buttons removed, and very popular in its time.

This is a Philips CD-I controller:

That's literally a Gravis PC GamePad with a different plastic color are you fucking kidding me?!

This is a PlayStation 1 controller:

Take a SNES controller, double up the shoulder buttons and add some grips. That's it, you're done.

This is a Gravis PC GamePad Pro:

That's the forbidden love child of a SNES and a PlayStation. That looks like it could be a fucking Nintendo Play Station controller. Enough said.

So clearly, Nintendo had it Right with their SNES controller, when all Sony could do to improve on it was adding grips and more shoulder buttons.

And then the Sony devs got a horrible idea.

This... is the PlayStation 1 Dual Shock controller.

Dual for the twin analog sticks, shock for the force feedback motors hidden in the grips.

From then on, all PlayStation controllers would follow the same basic design (except for Move), and after an initial hiccup with the Duke, the Xbox series' controllers would take after it as well. Some would have the directional pad and left stick switch places but these controllers are all basically interchangeable!

Here's a Logitech F310 (I use one myself), Xbox Series X, Switch Pro, and PS5 controller.

In low visibility conditions, you wouldn't be able to tell these fuckers apart!

So basically?

The SNES controller was the beginning of the end.

The PS1 controller was the end of the end.

I might consider the PS1 to be an over-hyped at the time piece of garbage but god damn did they do the controller right.

I feel Nintendo missed the mark with that direct. Basically they made the Switch 2 look like an Xbox One.

What makes multiplayer great isn't having voice chat and video in every game, certainly not Nintendo's miserable excuse for an online voice chat that requires you to already be friends with everyone and jump through a bunch of hoops. Does it even have compatibility with third party microphones? Probably not.

It isn't having a free roam mariokart where you can fly, swim, drive up walls and it rains sometimes. That's just a Forza game with wii graphics. What have any of those things got to do with it being a multiplayer game? What do they add to the multiplayer arcade? Absolutely nothing!

Mariokart is about being completely perfect for 2 and a half laps, and then your friend in third place throws a blue shell, which causes you and 2nd place to get knocked back, then you all get overtaken by 4th as they rocket past with a chain chomp or a bullet bill. It's about landing the banana just right that you get a persistent player off your tail, it's about taking a secret shortcut and messing it up and falling behind. It's about the things you'll do to your friends to get that sweet taste of victory!

I feel mario party catches the spirit of this much more, and it does demonstrate how you can use the camera to capture your friends' feelings of devastation, but there are two issues with this game's "enhancements". Firstly, who is going to be in the perfect position for the camera to catch their face? Who is going to have three friends with cameras and deluxe editions of the game for this already extremely expensive device? Secondly, why are they even bothering with a mouse function? There is nothing the mouse has been shown to do in ANY of this footage that cannot be better accomplished with gyro.

Seriously, the mouse thing is a big failure and no doubt these joycons are gonna be selling for £60 for each individual one, maybe more. It's antithetical to how the Switch is meant to operate. The best console for on the go and swapping to your living room tv... comes with a terrible mouse that only works on a flat surface. How many people have a table comfortably in reach of their sofa? Or is this meant to be played on a desk? There was not a single advertisement for the switch in its whole existence of someone playing while sat at a desk.

Leading onto the final failure - The price. The device costs the same as a steamdeck oled, which is already a better device in most ways, and it costs more than a brand new ps5, but also the GAMES cost £75 EACH.

Nintendo is trying to raise game prices to inflation. This will probably backfire sharply; They have always branded themselves as the more affordable option, but now they have priced themselves out of the range of ps5 and pc enthusiasts, nevermind the tired parents that are meant to be their target audience.

This is why i think it's no coincidence they announced Switch Family Sharing at the same time, they need to have soooome incentive for families to get this device and if they can save them buying multiple copies of the same game it's a start. However, i dont think most technically out of touch families will understand this feature. Theyll see the switch 2 costs £80 a game and then theyll decide to let their kids stick with their ipads or their switch 1s.

Mahoyome PC/Console Visual Novel??

I don't really use this acc or participate in the fandom anymore outside my little A03 corner and my never-ending journey of adding merch to myfigurecollection (just 92 more entries and I'll hit 2,000 added...) , but I spent my entire lunch break researching this (finally something to sleuth on other than finding non-existent official pics for merch from 2015) only to post it on reddit and watch it disappear into the void. So yeah just gonna throw it here since it looks like the original twitter post that I found this out from got zero traction (link later below) so I'm guessing no one else has noticed and it's not just some scam or really weird early april fool's joke?

TLDR: Someone did a whoops and published a video about an official mahoyome video game being released later this year, and then took it down, but not before it was noticed

I was browsing maho tags on Twitter like I usually do and noticed someone made a post (archived link that should be able to be seen without a Twitter acc, but credit to this account (Belserious) for noticing first!) about a YouTube video that has since been made private, announcing a magus bride game, "魔法使いの嫁　盛夏の幻と夢見る旅路" (Translated in an article as "The Ancient Magus' Bride: Midsummer's Mirage and the Journey of Dreams"; "まほなつ" or "Mahonatsu" for short?) for Steam, PS5, and Switch being released Oct 2nd, 2025.  The (unofficial) post mentioned the upload date being March 23, so someone probably did a big oops and published it early...the video title is "魔法使いの嫁　盛夏の幻と夢見る旅路】OP映像｜reche「さがしもの" so it appears it will showcase the opening theme of the game, which is sang by reche, a former EGOIST member. 

I have *not* seen the contents of the video and it does not appear to have been archived, so again, do not take this as official; but I searched the title online and the video did appear with part of the description showing stating that it is a visual novel (though clicking on it just says it's private).

Online translation is giving me "first visual novel" for 初のビジュアルノベルゲーム in particular but can't confirm the accuracy there

If you search on Bing in particular you can see that the thumbnail is the image in the twitter post

I also found an article on a major jp gaming news site that just restates the release date and title in JP and English, and that it is published by Bushiroad Games. (also has an English site).  There's also a trailer tab which just links to the private video.  Very cool to see if it is in fact official!  The visual does look like it has all the right copyrights and stuff.  Anyways, just wanted to mention to keep an eye on that video link when March comes around if interested!

Sony PlayStation 5 - Sonic Frontiers

Talk about Sonic the Hedgehog's equivalent of a glow-up from Phantasy Star 4 to Phantasy Star Online right here. To be honest, I was getting sick of the PS5's somewhat lacking amount of quality titles that make it worth the investment, and then Sega dropped a bombshell by releasing this game right here. And yes. That's right - my first-ever PS5 game review! I was coming into this game with low expectations and while the game initially did not wow me judging from all the IGN FIRST hands-ons I watched pre-release, I have to say that I was mighty blown away at the final product. This game actually reminded me of a cross between Sonic Adventure 1, the Final Fantasy Sonic X flash games as well as the newest Final Fantasy games, and if you are old enough, the epic cinematic (though dull to me) intro to Burai Hackigyoku no Yuushi Densetsu on the Mega CD, as well as Phantasy Star Online on the Dreamcast.

I was sorta flip-flopping on whether it was good or bad but personally, having played it for some time and even 100%-ing it with the Content Updates (Update 1: Sights, Sound and Speed; Update 2: Sonic's Birthday Bash; Update 3: The Final Horizon) that Sonic Team delivered, the game itself is mighty excellent for PS5 Sonic game standards. I am personally playing this game using Japanese audio and English text and I think that language combination works wonderfully. The English story is written by Ian Flynn of IDW Sonic Comics and Bumblekast fame, and while the story is a major improvement over the Happy Tree Friends vibe that Ken Pontac and Warren Graff gave I still have yet to play it again on English audio though. Sonic controlled weirdly for the first time I played, but I pretty much got used to the control scheme after learning through it and configuring the settings to my own personal preference. The in-game soundtrack is all sorts of excellent. A mix of melancholic mixed with hard rock, and ONE OK ROCK did a stellar performance with the in-game version of Vandalize. Shame I did not get to see their December 15 2023 concert in Kuala Lumpur though.

The graphics are not the best compared to all the PS5 exclusives (this game is also on PS4, Switch, and PC - at least in my country the XBOX version is not sold here) but for my first ever (and probably only) PS5 experience, it's not bad. Could've been Spider-Man 2 great though, but that would be me pulling the Sony fanboy card. Instead, I'd say, it reminds me of the Shenmue games mixed with Ridge Racer 7, Sonic Generations, Phantasy Star Online, and Need for Speed Most Wanted 2012.

Here is something cool. My copy of Sonic Frontiers for PS5 also came with a flyer for Sonic Movie 2 (a great Sonic movie honestly), and a promo sheet that I forgot even existed. That promo started players off with extra Blue Defense Seeds, Red Power Seeds, and Skill Points.

Overall, if you are looking for a great Sonic game for your new PS5, why not look at Sonic Frontiers? I mean, with Sonic Superstars and Sonic X Shadow Generations doing quite well, the 2020s is probably going to be a wonderful Decade of Sonic. Next up on my bucket list is to collect the two Sonic Frontiers soundtrack CD's that were released.
