Talk about Sonic the Hedgehog's equivalent of a glow-up from Phantasy Star 4 to Phantasy Star Online right here. To be honest, I was getting sick of the PS5's somewhat lacking amount of quality titles that make it worth the investment, and then Sega dropped a bombshell by releasing this game right here. And yes. That's right - my first-ever PS5 game review! I was coming into this game with low expectations and while the game initially did not wow me judging from all the IGN FIRST hands-ons I watched pre-release, I have to say that I was mighty blown away at the final product. This game actually reminded me of a cross between Sonic Adventure 1, the Final Fantasy Sonic X flash games as well as the newest Final Fantasy games, and if you are old enough, the epic cinematic (though dull to me) intro to Burai Hackigyoku no Yuushi Densetsu on the Mega CD, as well as Phantasy Star Online on the Dreamcast.
I was sorta flip-flopping on whether it was good or bad but personally, having played it for some time and even 100%-ing it with the Content Updates (Update 1: Sights, Sound and Speed; Update 2: Sonic's Birthday Bash; Update 3: The Final Horizon) that Sonic Team delivered, the game itself is mighty excellent for PS5 Sonic game standards. I am personally playing this game using Japanese audio and English text and I think that language combination works wonderfully. The English story is written by Ian Flynn of IDW Sonic Comics and Bumblekast fame, and while the story is a major improvement over the Happy Tree Friends vibe that Ken Pontac and Warren Graff gave I still have yet to play it again on English audio though. Sonic controlled weirdly for the first time I played, but I pretty much got used to the control scheme after learning through it and configuring the settings to my own personal preference. The in-game soundtrack is all sorts of excellent. A mix of melancholic mixed with hard rock, and ONE OK ROCK did a stellar performance with the in-game version of Vandalize. Shame I did not get to see their December 15 2023 concert in Kuala Lumpur though.
The graphics are not the best compared to all the PS5 exclusives (this game is also on PS4, Switch, and PC - at least in my country the XBOX version is not sold here) but for my first ever (and probably only) PS5 experience, it's not bad. Could've been Spider-Man 2 great though, but that would be me pulling the Sony fanboy card. Instead, I'd say, it reminds me of the Shenmue games mixed with Ridge Racer 7, Sonic Generations, Phantasy Star Online, and Need for Speed Most Wanted 2012.
Here is something cool. My copy of Sonic Frontiers for PS5 also came with a flyer for Sonic Movie 2 (a great Sonic movie honestly), and a promo sheet that I forgot even existed. That promo started players off with extra Blue Defense Seeds, Red Power Seeds, and Skill Points.
Overall, if you are looking for a great Sonic game for your new PS5, why not look at Sonic Frontiers? I mean, with Sonic Superstars and Sonic X Shadow Generations doing quite well, the 2020s is probably going to be a wonderful Decade of Sonic. Next up on my bucket list is to collect the two Sonic Frontiers soundtrack CD's that were released.

Sony PlayStation 5 - Sonic X Shadow Generations
Title: Sonic X Shadow Generations / ソニック × シャドウ ジェネレーションズ
Developer/Publisher: Sega 2nd Development Division (Sonic Team)
Release date: 25 October 2024
Catalogue No.: ELJM-30515
Genre: 3D Action Adventure
Tumblr media
Talk about a similar situation to when Nintendo remastered Super Mario 3D World and added a whole new quest called Bowser's Fury (or Fury World in Japan). Well, Sega took a page from that, only on steroids as they kicked off in 2024 the "Fearless Year of Shadow" campaign in fabulous style. They were really flexing their power here. Anyway. Sonic x Shadow Generations is a remaster of one of the best three dimensional (3D) Sonic games, with the added bonus of essentially a downloadable content pack focused on Shadow the Hedgehog. This additional content extends the play time of the original game by approximately 50%. Sonic x Shadow Generations was released in October 2024 as a remaster of the 2011 release simply titled Sonic Generations (aka "Sonic Generations: White Space-Time / ソニック ジェネレーションズ:白の時空" in Japan). The concept of the original game was to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Sonic and combine the best of 3D and two-dimensional (2D) Sonic. The game lets you dash through various worlds in two different ways – one way illustrates the world in 3D and Sonic controls like his 3D version since the release of Sonic Adventure in 1998, while the second portrays the world in 2D and Sonic controls like the famous Sega Mega Drive version of the blue blur. All in all, this combined to make my favorite of the 3D Sonic games. Oh and it is easily tied to Sonic Frontiers at the Number One spot at just how tear-jerky the entire story is. Really gave me a lot of Radiant Silvergun vibes here.
To my surprise, this remaster and additional Shadow content was announced on January 31, 2024. I was instantly excited for Sonic x Shadow Generations. After playing through it, I can say that my expectations were met and this is now my favorite 3D Sonic game, supplanting the original simply because of the added Shadow Generations portion.
It is important to note that you can choose to play either Sonic Generations or Shadow Generations on the main menu. I have already played the OG Sonic Generations a dime and a dozen on my XBOX 360 already so I know what to expect. It's the Shadow campaign where things get interesting.
Shadow Generations takes the same basic concept from Sonic Generations, but applies it to the Shadow character and his glorious history throughout the Sonic universe that started in Sonic Adventure 2. There are six stages that you can play through, excluding downloadable content. The first five stages follow the recipe of the first Act being in 3D and the second act being in 2D. The 3D stages for Shadow handle and play are similar to the Modern Sonic stages. The 2D stages, however, differ from Sonic Generations. Instead of having the more limited maneuverability that Classic Sonic has, the 2D levels of Shadow have Shadow controlling the same way and with basically the same move set as his 3D counterpart.
One major gameplay element and function that Shadow has access to that is not available in Sonic Generations is the Chaos Control function. By pressing the L2 button to activate Chaos Control, you can pause time and have all enemies and objects remain still for five seconds. You can replenish the Chaos Control gauge by defeating foes and/or finding certain chests until the bar is refilled. Another cool feature of Shadow is the ability to shoot spears. By pressing and holding the triangle button, you can lock-on to up to five enemies or objects to shoot. There is also a navigation element related to this, with there being some posts that can be activated and unlock pathways by shooting the poles with spears.
The best part of Shadow Generations is its difficulty. This game has a higher level of difficulty than the Sonic Generations portion, especially the last two zones that you must go through and the final boss fight. The ever-increasing challenge that Shadow Generations presented was a welcome surprise.
The stages represented in Shadow Generations include areas from Sonic Adventure 2 up through Sonic Frontiers. I really enjoyed all of the levels. Space Colony ARK is the first zone and a great way to get started, as the level begins with you jumping and grinding through a colony in outer space and ultimately ending up in a cityscape environment. Kingdom Valley is also a favorite, for its flowing waters, steep mountains, and stone castles littered throughout – even if this is from my least favorite 3D Sonic game in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006). However, Sunset Heights and Radical Highway are hard to decide between which is my favorite. I greatly enjoyed both levels for their cityscapes and highways to dash and bounce through.
After you beat both acts of the first two stages, you unlock challenge levels. There are four challenge levels for each stage (i.e., two in 3D for Act 1 and two in 2D for Act 2). The challenges are located in pairs (e.g., both Act 1 challenges for the Rail Canyon Zone are located side by side). Beating a pair of challenges (e.g., both Act 2 challenge levels associated with the Space Colony ARK stage) will unlock a key. Once you unlock three keys, you earn the opportunity to fight a boss.
Shadow Generations also has a hub world to interact with the various zones and challenges that you will unlock throughout your journey. Unlike the 2D hub world in Sonic Generations, this one is presented in full 3D. This hub world also has hidden chests throughout that can be unlocked by finding keys within each act.
It is hard to find a major flaw with Sonic x Shadow Generations. The game does a fantastic job of providing fast 2D gameplay and speedy, fluid 3D gameplay with Sonic and Shadow. This (and Sonic Frontiers) is easily my favorite 3D Sonic game so far. I cannot recommend it enough!
Feel the rush!
