I have made the mistake of rewatching vampire diaries.

Racism and misogynoir are so apparent in fandom, especially when it comes to shipping because why is it when a white male, sometimes female but I see it more with the former, character is on screen with a love interest, particularly woc, especially if they're black, and even with all the emotional scenes or just moments where they look at one another in ways different from the rest, it's met with "No, they aren't dating/the show is not going to put them together" but let the other love interest be white as well and suddenly it all makes sense? Heck, the examples I mentioned above don't even have to exist between the latter for some to STILL go and believe this rhetoric (eg. some Jace and Helaena shippers because, even if these two only interacted with a dance but yet we see Baela console Jace, after he seeks her out, apparently it's to far fetched to believe that Jacela could be a thing?!)

Sometimes it could be a headcanon that, largely, would make sense (and oftentimes was birth due to lack of respect that the poc characters could have been given by the writers *cough* TVD *cough*), and yet you'd still have people dismissing it left and right and spewing hate. At a HEADCANON! And I'm not saying that just because the other person in the ship is poc that you have to ship them, I'm not, but it's very apparent to many poc fans in fandom that unless the characters are swapping spit and doing the nasty, the possibility of them being viewed in any romantic lens feels too much of stretch even though their white counterparts don't have to jump through the same loops.

DRR and Sebastian were in a Liam Neeson film where she plays Sebastian's daughter who gets kidnapped because her dad's like a criminal. she survives the movie because he rescues her with liam neeson i think. it's so amusing to me in hindsight, Mikael saving his granddaughter? he would never.

also on Nik, i would love to say Hope has met him but considering Legacies acts like Hope's an orphan and lives at the school all the time, i don't know. i know she insinuated Freya feared no humanity!Hope would kill him and that's why she left him home for the Mikaelson family dinner in Legacies s4. also it says something about the quality of Legacies that it's best episodes are the ones calling back to TVD/TO (the Kai arc, Mikaelson cameos, and the Jo episode in s1). Sidenote, the Jo episode is one of my favorite episodes in the whole verse, it's so good.

i know Claire deciding to leave the show led to Freya being created but i'm low-key glad that happened because Freya added some new depth to the lore. We got to learn more about Esther outside of her lovers and children and Freya's relationships to Finn and Mikael made those characters less asshole-ish. especially Mikael, him being so happy that she was alive is such a good scene. it also gave Finn a non-toxic relationship (well mostly non-toxic, i dont think any Mikaelson relationship has no toxicity to it).

I loved that they acted together since we never got to see Mikael with her. Which is probably for the best. As you said, he likely wouldn't have tried to save her in anyway. He wouldn't have even considered her his grandchild.

I would imagine Hope has met Nik, but like you said, it doesn't seem like it. I actually did watch the Jo episode and loved it! I loved Jo! I actually watched the first like 7 episodes of Legacies before TO. I thought Hope had been an orphan since she was a baby based on Legacies and I assumed all of the Mikaelsons died in TO since she was abandoned. But, from what I've heard, I agree. Legacies was only good when it pulled on old storylines. I hated the random monsters.

I wanted to see Rebekah's story play out, but I actually liked how they moved forward given Claire needed to leave the show. Freya was a needed addition. I agree she did give more depth to the family. I hate how everyone paints a lot of the "Mikaelson" family as black and white. They are all complex, yes even Mikael. I do wish they would have kept her more of the "non-toxic" sibling and fight against Klaus and Elijah more like she did in the beginning. She unfortunately did start becoming like them. Either way, I love Freya and I'm glad they brought her in!

Klaus and Elijah are definitely my favorites out of all the Mikaelsons, but I do love Rebekah a lot too! Freya, Finn, and Kol are further down the list, in that order. I love my murder children, but I’m not their mother—I’m not obligated to love them all equally!

I think the main appeal of Klaus and Elijah for me is simply their intensity. They’re the first originals we meet in tvd, and before we even see them together onscreen we can tell they have a fraught, complicated history—yet there’s love there too.

The flashbacks to the 15th century as they prepare to sacrifice Katherine? Klaus laughing about their silly ploys throughout history, while Elijah gazes lovingly over his shoulder? Bliss. I swoon. And the scene in present day, after Klaus has broken the curse and has just transformed back into a human? Elijah, the previous night (or however long ago) was prepared to kill him. Had his hand in his heart and everything. Yet now here he is, helping Klaus dress like some kind of butler—someone who’s been there for him like this time and again.

I go similarly insane about the flashbacks to the 1920s, in which Klaus has to explicitly tell the audience that Rebekah is his sister and not, you know, his girlfriend. But they do undercut this slightly with Rebekah immediately jumping on Stefan and, while I approve, climb that ripper tree, it does take away from her psychotic, erotic bond with Klaus.

And that’s just in tvd! That’s only setting the stage for TO! In TO, Klaus and Elijah’s bond is ramped up to main character status. Elijah is simultaneously Klaus’s brother-associate, his overbearing, cautioning father figure, and the lover with whom he has frequent spats and reconciliations. Klaus is having a baby? No, Elijah says, we’re having a baby! And inserts himself into this pregnancy situation with Hayley, and no one questions it.

(Klaus and Rebekah’s relationship also gets some amazing moments in s1 of TO, and for the first time Rebekah and Elijah’s relationship gets to shine too! But alas, after some of the best episodes of the entire show—episodes 1x14-16—Rebekah departs, so we get to see less of her with her siblings, and Klelijah continues to take center stage.)

I could detail every single thing I love about Klelijah’s relationship, their ups and downs, their tragedy and their comedy—and I might come back later and add on, if I feel like it!—but yeah, that’s my draw to these two. Canon is so generous with them, and I simply go crazy for it!

Not to mention—the actors’ chemistry had a huge hand in all this. They bounce off each other so well, and their mannerisms are so different yet both so old at the same time. You really believe they’ve known each other for a thousand years, and any fight that they have is mere window dressing to the centuries they’ve stood shoulder to shoulder.

And not only that! But! (⚠️Spoilers for the end of TO, if anyone still cares about that⚠️) The show rewards me and lets them die together. Klaus makes the ultimate sacrifice for his daughter, and Elijah’s like ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ guess I’ll die too, and follows him into oblivion for no other reason than he wanted to. Ah yes, a very normal brotherly relationship. (I’m going FERAL just thinking about it again!)

Truly I have not been normal about them since 2018, and that doesn’t look to be changing anytime soon. I will keep repeating myself in posts like these until…either the whole world understands the brilliance of TO, or until I die. Whichever comes first.

What do you think of Lorena and Russell from True Blood? Their portrayal as vampires that is? I see a lot of posts from you talking about Eric, Pam, Godric and Bill but I dont see much on Russell and Lorena. I remember how you said ancient vampires aren’t screaming for people to respect them like Klaus did. And how Godric didn’t have to do this. But I just watched True Blood 3x6 and Russell screams at Lorena how he’s her king. and speaking of Lorena do you find her obsession with Bill/Sookie petty? Like TVD petty?

Well, you have a character who’s been around for 3,000 years and he’s a king, and we got to write in fancy king-language. So, yeah, it did get baroque and to me that’s part of the fun of it.

Like even in 3x06, Bill tries to attack him and he just laughs and is literally like, are you serious?

when he yells I am your king, it's because he's annoyed and this whole situation is bothersome and he's Russell.

Klaus isn't framed as unhinged and he doesn't operate like a king with violent bouts of fancy and outbursts, he's just kind of a bitch baby who struggles to be listened to.

So, yeah, when I say that according to TVD lore, they're supposed to be extremely emotional and everything is heightened for them, they could go an even more unhinged version of Russell and Franklin

And speaking of Lorena, I mean she's supposed to be petty. Godric says it, he's like we haven't evolved, we've just gotten more brutal and chastises her for acting the way she does despite her age, so because she's supposed to be petty and brutal and vicious, I don't consider it TVD-level petty because TVD would never commit the way that True Blood commits to Lorena's gruesome pettiness but I also got bored very quickly, I didn't need to see her again after season 2.

Hi, different anon, but delena and steroline are my NOTPs too. They're literally two of my least favorite ships from any show, not just TVD! I'm curious though how you think the writers could have made stelena a believable endgame given all that happened? I LOVED stelena the first three seasons, but for the second half of the series Elena chose Damon over and over and seemed totally out of love with Stefan, so I can't imagine them getting back together in a way that would feel earned and balanced to me? I would now always suspect that Elena loved Damon more than she loved Stefan and that Stefan loved Elena a lot more than she could love him. I'm curious to hear your thoughts!

With Elena and Damon, I do think she was attracted to him and cared but not in love with him. Even in the later seasons, her strong connection with Stefan was apparent.

And I don’t necessarily agree that Stefan loved Elena more and vice versa. I feel like they both loved each other equally and fought hard for each other (Elena in season 3 especially).

As for how I’d write them as endgame, the potential is endless for them. But if it were up to me, there’d be no sirebond in season 4 and Stelena would be happy and in love. Damon would finally got it in his head that Elena doesn’t love him and moved on. He’d also undergo a lot of character development and then Bamon would be endgame :)

i think that it's a little strange how they wanted to make tatum the s1 leighton and tried to villainise her but then accidentally wrote her to be a little too nice to leighton earlier. had she been just a little bitchier or that they showed another scene of her not being too nice, it wouldve come across better and we wouldnt have this wtf? moment. im not sure if you're familiar with the show, but another tweet pointed out how accidentally likeable tatum is and compared the reactions to her (assumed) departure to how the reactions were to penelope from legacies (the tvd spinoff). and that kind of hit the nail on the head for me. i think it doesnt help that gracie dzienny pulls off that "mean top bitch you would root for" so well. maybe they shouldve watched her in first kill 😂

i just wonder how theyre gonna write leighton and alicia now since they sort of used up quite a bit of plot they couldve used for s3. and considering midori is on greys now, i wouldnt be surprised if they had to rip them apart just to accommodate any potential scheduling conflicts. it just feels like they shot themselves in the foot here a little. had they not write off tatum so quickly, they couldve given themselves space just in case that happens as well.

it all just feel like wasted opportunities. youre right in saying its easier for us to sit back, judge it and think we couldve done better after they already finished the job. especially considering how volatile the fate of hbo's projects are right now. but it just feels so wasted because the show already had a good chunk of people loving it and it also naturally grew this season. it couldve just been so much better, but of course we dont know what went on behind the scenes.

not that i dont deeply love the show, i really do and i get really excited every week. but if this happens again next season, then it'll just a little painful to watch subsequently because all i'll think of is how it couldve been better. and thats saying a lot considering its already quite a great show.

I’m really just missing the nuance from how Tatum was written. I mean, there is a way to have her be as supportive as she was and for her to still, ultimately, be someone who reminds Leighton too much of a version of herself she wants to change. But to pull that out of their asses and toss Tatum aside despite all the good qualities she’d been given, nah that ain’t it.

But in that sense I’m not sure Tatum was accidentally likeable. I think they cast Gracie for a reason, surely, a reason beyond that she kinda resembles Reneé Rapp. I do think the creators put enough thought into it to consider that Tatum would inevitably be likeable to many and I don’t think the intention ever was to completely villainize her. Nor would that be a good story. It’s just... there’s such a disconnect between her first three episodes and how easily she’s discarded. Once again I can only say that it was lazy writing and that’s what I find upsetting.

I’m just curious to see how Leighton’s journey continues, and I do hope they put more weight behind her social awakening in season 3. There is the question of how she can continue being with Alicia when Midori might not be available for as much as a love interest of a main character should be, but really I just care about Leighton. If they write Alicia out in episode one I am gonna be upset ngl lmao because then what was the reason? Ah well, we’ll see. I take comfort in the show’s apparently good numbers and that it was renewed for season 3 so quickly. But one can never know in today’s fragile streaming market and especially with HBO Max and their bullshit so I hope the show doesn’t alienate its audience in season 3. I fear the season 2 finale might have done some damage; valid or not is another matter, but yeah it’s tricky with audiences nowadays. But also, like you say, it is a great show and I enjoyed season 2 very much despite my criticisms, and I just wish for the pacing and other adjacent issues to improve in season 3. I feel like by the third season a series should be mature enough to have that stuff figured out.

rewatching the originals has me questioning if I would enjoy the characters more if the writers were honest about who they were. I dont really have anything against klamille inherently if they actually presented the relationship as Klaus seeking validation in someone who pushed all of his buttons in the right way and cami were framed more as someone desperate to appease a monster and make his evil circumstantial as a coping mechanism because of trauma from what her brother did. I also could imagine them having some kind of relationship, not fluffy and romantic, but just based on constant proximity since Camille is sorta supposed to represent the humans

tbh I think a lot of problems in tvd and to come from writers not being honest with themselves and putting plot before characters. its why Elena and Hayley are so hated and Klaus became more unlikable the more the originals 'redeemed' him.

so much of me hating different elements of that show is that I feel and I am exaggerating gaslighted by the writers. dont show me something and then try to convince me that its the opposite of what I saw with mine own two eyes fool.

Yeah totes agree, and the writers seemed incredibly resistant to leaning into what was working in the shows and ditching what wasn't in the later seasons. Like, there were plenty of elements that had potential, but they seemed to hyper-focus on everything that the audience didn't like and just kept hammering it harder and harder in an effort to get them to like it. That and like, obsessively retconning everything that was written into the show before rather than coming up with a new storyline.

＊° Witches cursed klaus and whoever was his blood in wolf form until he agrees to help take down marcel, they keep trying to convince him that Hayley is carrying his child but he knows it’s not his.

His wolf would have immediately wanted to keep it, to protect it, to care and love for it, but he doesn’t feel anything for the thing that grows inside of her. He’s been spending most of his time in his room but tonight he heard them talking about putting a dagger in his chest.

Rushing down the stairs furious, how dare they think that he couldn’t hear them. Busting through the living room doors snarling at any and everyone. Camille was shocked but she knew normally he would calm down for her.

Walking closer to him as she hold her hand out to touch him, klaus gets even more angry. Camille doesn’t know him or his wolf, she was signing her own death certificate. Pretend to calm down for her seeing her smile, his wolf smirks at her.

Elijah and marcel know that look on his face, “CAMILLE NO!!” Marcel yells as he flashes her out of the way before klaus snapped his jaw shut. He snarls and barks viciously at everyone in the room, stomping his huge paw against the hard wood floor that cracks under pressure.

Elijah wants to reason with his brother about him hearing them talk about putting a special dagger in his chest. Putting his hand up in defense at his brothers snarls and growls “Niklaus it’s not what you think” he try’s to speak calmly because he knows his brother is unpredictable in wolf form.

Klaus’ head snaps in his direction as he lunges towards his brother “I DONT WANT TO HEAR YOUR EXCUSES!!” He growled at his brother for trying to calm him down but he was livid and there was only one person who might have been able to calm him down.

Kol reached in his back pocket for his phone, pressing call on her name. She answered the phone “what kol? Im trying to put the kids down for a nap” she sounded like she was moving frantically around her hotel room. Klaus was too busy snarling to hear her soft angelic voice.

“Daring I need you and the tiny yous to come to the manor, he’s loosing his bloody mind!” She sighed before saying she was on her way with the kids. Kol put his phone back into his pocket before scooting farther back into the corner as his brother stalked forward slowly.

He licked his fangs as he walk towards them in a sinister manner. The was a sudden set of paws coming from behind klaus, his ears perk up as he sniff the air. His wolf knows that smell by heart, he turns around to see a blonde-white wolf standing behind him.

Not yet noticing the tiny little wolves behind her, klaus wolf form doesn’t want to shift back. Instead he lunges at Caroline who swiftly moves out of his way, he lunges again making her move away from her pups. Klaus wasn’t paying attention to the pure white pup under his paw that he steps on him.

Henry lets out a fierce yelp as he whines from his father stepping on him, Caroline sees Henry crying out In pain and her wolf snaps. She picks him up by his torso before moving him behind her. Letting the anger come out she jumps onto klaus as he falls onto his back. Klaus had just noticed that he stepped on the pup, she’s standing over him in all of her glory.

Snarling angrily at him “YOU JUST STEPPED ON MY SON, CALM THE FUCK DOWN! OR ILL KILL YOU MYSELF!” Her eyes glowing a crimson blue color as she has her paw on his chest keeping him on the ground. His wolf submits to her command as he calms down, realization hits him.

Only a male alphas mate can command the male to listen and have no rebuttal from him. She moves away from him as she goes to check on Henry who was playing with his uncle Kol. Nudging him with her nose as he jumps away from his tackled uncle towards his momma.

She licks his fur as a kiss “are you alright baby?” He rubs up against her front legs before kissing her nose “yes momma, I strong boy!” He turns back to his uncle who had just pulled his tail, Henry shakes his little butt before pouncing on top of his uncle. Klaus had gotten up as he sat down trying to understand what Caroline meant by her son.

A tiny little grey-brown pup trots over to him, he looks down at the pup with his head tilted. The pup rubs up against his legs, klaus leans down to give it a nudge. The pup nips at his nose before rubbing her head against his nose, he doesn’t know why but his wolf licks the pups head.

The pups tail wags as she nestled in between his large front legs “my papa!” Caroline looks at Lizzie who found her way towards her daddy and a comfortable spot between his legs. Noticing her smallest baby hiding behind the couch she goes over towards him.

Licking all over his face and head as he rubs up against her nose and legs. Corbin was a shy little boy so he would always hide behind other bigger objects as a protective act. She picks him up by his jet black fur and walks over towards his dad who’s cleaning Lizzie’s head.

Klaus was laid on his stomach with Lizzie in between his front legs, near his neck as she snuggled into him. Caroline lays beside him as she sits Corbin down and pushes him towards klaus who looks his little way.

Seeing how the little pup has the same color fur as him, he picks him as while he squirms under his fathers soft teeth. Klaus puts him down beside his sister who snuggled her littlest brother, he licks Corbin’s head getting a soft nose kiss in return.

Corbin snuggles his dad as him and his sister close their eyes, seeing how it was past their nap time anyways. Caroline rubs her head under klaus chin as he closes his eyes rubs the top of her head. “Yes they are yours!” She whispered in her head knowing he would hear her.

Henry looked over at his momma and papa snuggling his siblings and he wanted a part of the snuggles. Nipping at his uncle lijah once more before trotting over to his momma, Caroline noticed him and perked her ears up tilting her head.

Making his way in front of his momma as he trots in a circle before plopping down in between her legs up against her neck. Caroline licks all over his pure white fur as he starts to fall asleep, he may have been a little goofball but he loved his naps.

Everyone was relieved that klaus was now calm and happy, Camille was hurt that klaus hadn’t calmed down for her but they way he was around the blonde-white coated wolf let her know that he loved her. Rebekah and kol were happy that they secret was finally out in the open.

Their brother had three kids who adored him, now all they had to deal with was Hayley. Elijah was surprised but content that his brother had other children and another wolf in his life. Marcel was quiet he didn’t know what to think or say he just watched klaus be calm and loving towards his pups and the female wolf.

Camille couldn’t take it anymore she wanted to know why klaus tried to kill her and why he was snuggled up with some blonde wolf. “What is he doing? Why did he try to bite me?” She asked everyone but they were too busy watching the adorable scene in front of them.

Camille was about to go up to the blonde wolf but Elijah stoped her by grabbing her arm “Camille it would be best if didn’t try that. As you can see my brother is very protective over his mate and pups, so going near them uninvited could get you killed. Me nor my siblings would be able to help you!” As always Elijah spoke calmly before letting go of Camille who was shocked to say the least.

Elijah had said Klaus’ Mate. Meaning he was basically married to the blonde wolf and he loved her more than she thought he did for herself. Blinking away the tears she steps back and crosses her arms not saying another word.

Everyone watched as klaus, his pups, and Caroline laid on the ground napping peacefully together. Nobody dared to bother them or to say anything, it was a beautiful scene to see klaus calm and gentle with his pups and Caroline.

Elijah may have thought that they child Hayley carried was his brothers redemption, but seeing him and his three pups along with Caroline made his understand. Caroline was his brothers Mate and she along with her kids were his brothers redemption.

i would say dialogue, and story cohesiveness. i struggle a lot with remembering plot-lines that i myself would've peppered into previous chapters or parts of stories, and its one of the main reasons why i often shy away from multi-chaptered stories

harry potter, or percy jackson. actually it might've been mortal instruments. im not sure it was almost a decade ago now; ive been writing on and off for about 8/9 years

What’s your favourite fic you’ve written?

i think i have to say begin again, but this is me trying also holds an extremely special place in my heart and im hoping everybody else likes it as much as i do (and Amy does, she's my #1 cheerleader for this fic)

As other anon asked, I dont think the bonkai fandom is as active anymore bc we have so little content to work with, just the potential of what they "could have been" if the writers knew how to handle a dark ship... which probably never would have come to fruition under the CW network (at least nothing of high caliber)... Bonnie was considered the most righteous out of everyone, so it would have been far more interesting watching her struggle against this internal push-and-pull unlike what they failed to do with Elena. Writers wanted us to believe Elena was the "good girl" but she was way too one dimensional, so her empty gestures definitely came off as fake & unrelateble, that's why so many fans hated her lol. It was the actors (Kat & Chris) who really took something that was meant to be/or particularly expected to be nothing & instead turned a few brief encounters into this huge overnight success. We really were under the impression that Kai would be the pivot to Bonnie's new character development. J.P. hinted to us before hand that Bonnie would get more focus S6... & at the time I naively held onto this belief that things would indeed change)..that the prison world would serve a greater purpose in changing her nonexistent role, decision making, & that she'd finally question her unwavering loyalty to the MF gang. Making the ship bittersweet bc it ended way before it even got started. We as Bonnie fans know them canning Kai (his death in 6x22) was complete & utter bullsh*t. That's when my love for tvd really declined, I gave up all hope & started reading the fanfics instead. I think most bonkai fans have that in common. Notice how majority of Kai-stans don't even mention bonkai?? Yeah that's bc they were predictably shipping him with someone as basic as Katherine by default. Hence, they never cared about Bonnie's part in the show regardless. But everyone knows Kai can't exist without Bonnie, essentially that's why he's not the same character in Legacies (just another desparate one note villain).

I think all ships take a nosedive after content is over, but it's still remarkable IMO that with so little content, BK is as active as it is now. Thank you for reminding us that there were a lot of pre-season 6 hints that Bonnie was going to undergo a change in the show. I remember an interview where Kat said she'd get a love interest in season 6, too. Of course, all that came to nothing when Kai proved to be too popular for Bonnie.

Kai stans who hate Bonnie are one of the great mysteries of racism life to me because Kai isn't memorable without Bonnie. He's a fast talking, pop culture cracking villain, and the show is full of them. It was interesting the first time Elijah Mikaelson said "I believe the correct expression is O M G" but by the time Silas was making Madonna reference, it was a running joke that no one found funny anymore. Shipping Kai with Katherine is even more ridiculous because neither of these people would like each other. Between the way Kai hated Damon, mocked the Delena relationship, and cracked jokes about Caroline's humanity off phase, Kai lowkey looked down on vampires. (Which is why, btw, I hate hate the heretic arc because Kai would not have wanted that. Even if Kai had gone evil and chosen to kill the coven, it won't be at the cost of turning himself into an undead blood-drinker). The men Katherine loves are men like Elijah and Stefan who are "good" men, or try to be good, or pretend very hard to be good. The honourable, long-suffering soul. Even the redeemed version of Kai won't be like either of these men.

My heart broke for Lizzie this entire episode. No humanity!Hope comes off like she's just exhausted and tired from everything. She's very different from all the other characters we've seen shut off their humanity (at least from what I remember) so that's refreshing to see. I loooooved seeing Rebekah this episode, I really hope we see more of her.

not gonna lie I would love to hear more about the drama and infighting that went on in The Vampire Diaries fandom if you have the time (and also want to use that time to give your experience with the fandom, which from the snippets you've told sounds Not Fun so I get it if you don't want to lol)

i really feel like tvd is one of those fandoms that is so hard to describe without a lot of ‘you’d have to have been there’, but it really felt like this huge and all-consuming beast for about five years until the show finally imploded and the fandom basically turned on it en masse. (you ever see that post going around that’s like ‘if you ever want to know what true regret feels like, ask someone who once called tvd their favorite show’? still a mood, all these years later. basically the entire fandom thought the show should have just bowed out with whatever shreds of dignity it had left at the end of season 6, and became more of a hatedom than a fandom for the last two seasons. when you have an entire fandom cheering news of your show’s cancellation, i think that’s a sign you done fucked up, julie.)

first and most infamous, of course, are the ship wars. which are pretty much inevitable in any teen-centered drama, and i really think the CW fucking thrives on them, but it was particularly egregious in TVD’s case because not only was the base premise of the show a love triangle, but the two main romantic leads were brothers that the show constantly pit against one another--in pursuit of elena’s affections, but also because it kept up this insistence on the ‘good brother/bad brother’ dichotomy which stopped making sense after about season 2 (by which time we have found out that the good brother was never as good as he appeared, and the bad brother has been growing and isn’t nearly as bad as he pretends to be)--and the question of which brother ‘deserved’ elena (and no, what elena wanted very rarely factored into these discussions, especially in the team stefan camp because they turned on her when what she wanted was no longer The Good Brother, but i’ll get to that in a bit) was hotly contested.

i’m not kidding when i say the shipping wars were vicious. i started watching tvd shortly after it began to air, which was late 2009, and kept up with it fairly sporadically over the years. i didn’t come onto tumblr until 2011/2012, and by then, the fandom was already pretty much a garbagefire. there were anti ship and anti character blogs, any time something bad happened for one ship the rival ship would invade the tags to gloat about it (seasons 3 and 4 were especially rough, and i’m not gonna pretend delena fans weren’t just as bad about tag invasion and shit, but as that was my side of the road i saw a lot more of the stelena shippers being assholes, which soured my opinion on the ship a long time before i started rewatching and realized the red flags were there from the start), confessions blogs were popular also toxic as fuck (so much fighting happened in the notes of those posts, good gods), and this was right around when twitter’s popularity was on the rise and the line between Celebrity and Fan was thinning, so the fandom was absolutely atrocious to much of the tvd cast and crew.

(some of them deserved a lot of the later backlash, but in the early years a lot of it was ‘how dare you write the story in a way i dont like, you terrible fucking person’, and gods don’t get me started on the dobsley vs nian Thing)

i think what really encapsulates my feelings on the tvd fandom as a whole, though, is the way they (to this DAY) treated elena gilbert, which can be summed up in one meme that gained a lot of traction around season 3 if i remember right: that gif of pam from true blood, with the text altered to read “i’m so OVER elena and her precious doppelganger vagina!”

i swear at one time i had over half the active tvd fan accounts on tumblr blocked, because i got to a point where i would no longer tolerate elena hate, and she was (and still is, in what remains of the fandom; you’ll see a lot of ‘elena was one of the worst things about the show’ takes from ex-fans, too) one of the most widely despised characters in the entire fandom. because she -checks smudged writing on hand- was a traumatized teenage girl who -reads off a crumpled notecard- couldn’t always perfectly sort out her own feelings and -squints at the ceiling- sometimes made mistakes or bad decisions. (except a lot of the fandom also insisted that she was a mary sue who had no character traits or flaws or faults and it was like....make up your fucking minds???? is she a calculating conniving bitch whose somehow manipulating these centuries old vampires to tie them around her little finger or is she a boring flat character with no depth and no flaws??? jfc)

there was this massive double standard, too--like, stefan and damon could fuck whoever they wanted and that was fine, but elena was constantly raked over the coals for the crime of developing romantic feelings for the two men who had become constants in her life and whom she cared for deeply, and oh my GOD the slut shaming that happened when elena slept with damon was fucking wild. (and also happened in canon lmfao. like the show had one of elena’s best friends basically call her diseased on screen for falling in love with someone other than stefan. it was gross and ridiculous and the friend in question was also being a giant hypocrite at the time since she was happily flirting with someone who was directly responsible for the deaths of like four of elena’s loved ones and her own boyfriend’s mother but that’s beside the point) but like elena was called a slut and a bitch and a whore for ‘cheating’ on stefan (she hadn’t, and she had in fact broken up with him on screen the episode earlier) and ‘immediately’ jumping into bed with damon, even though none of them said fucking boo when stefan had one night stands or damon had fuckbuddies or whatever.

shit, caroline didn’t get any of this treatment when she started falling for tyler while dating matt! which isn’t to say i think she should have, just that i think it’s fucking ridiculous that elena was absolutely demonized by the fandom for daring to have feelings for two guys at once and eventually acting on them--despite the fact that the entire premise of the show was a love triangle. it’s not a love triangle if both sides don’t eventually get explored, and the crew had been pretty explicit about the fact that delena was going to happen at some point--but when it did, a huge chunk of the fandom absolutely threw a fit.

and a lot of these elena haters were alleged stelena stans, and i say alleged because they hated her so much for not wanting stefan’s dick anymore that it was clear they were really stefan stans and only wanted stelena to be endgame because they wanted stefan to ‘win’ at the end of the day, because ‘he’s the good brother’ so he deserved elena more.

it was all very gross and very misogynistic and very sex shaming (apparently delena was a ‘shallow’ and ‘superficial’ relationship because they had sex after two years of unrequited feelings slowly becoming requited and then pining for ages on both sides, and because they had a lot of on screen chemistry that the show capitalized on for years so of course they did a lot of making out and shit but it’s not like stelena didn’t have its fair share of making out and sex scenes, stefan was just too much of a coward to let elena top i’d apologize for that joke but i’m really not sorry because it’s true), and when i say it was egged on by the crew, that’s because they refused to let the love triangle die back in season 4 when it should have.

they insisted on stringing stelena fans along, dropping little bread crumbs to keep them invested, like dreams of a future where they were married and revealing that stefan was also a doppelganger and he and elena were descended from a pair of star-crossed lovers (a plot that ultimately went nowhere, to no one’s great surprise), and then fucking like. julie plec turned around and threw nina under the bus after she chose not to extend her contract and pretended that stelena might have happened again if she hadn’t left the show, which....i mean frankly i wouldn’t put it past her, but it would have been shitty writing. then again, she thought having a vampire pregnancy where a uterus was magically transplanted from a witch into a vampire that could somehow......carry the babies to term.... made sense and was a good way to accomodate candice’s RL pregnancy rather than like literally ANYTHING else, soooooo. but anyway julie saying that around like, end of s6 sparked off a new wave of nina hate and elena hate and ship wars bc they SEers took it as ‘confirmation’ that stelena was REALLY meant to be endgame and it was all just a hot fucking mess

another thing is that, while tvd was in its prime before the anti/purity culture shit started picking up any real steam, there was still this pervasive attitude throughout the fandom that if you liked Damon, you were A Bad Person. liking damon was apparently grounds for insults and harassment, and apparently he was The Worst Person on the Show even though literally nothing he does on screen is any worse than shit we know stefan has done (and frankly every other vampire too, but i mention stefan specifically because he was always held up--in the show but especially in the fandom--as the Good Brother while damon was the Bad One, and if you liked damon more then that had to mean your morals were dodgy and you clearly couldn’t appreciate what a heroic and saintly figure dear stefan was and....oops, i’m sorry, my salt keeps leaking -cough-).

meanwhile klaus quickly became a fandom darling despite not even really having much of a redemption arc (on tvd anyway, he just became more ‘affably evil’ as the show went on and more inclined to work with the main characters rather than try to kill them; i have no idea what went on over on his show, though), and like i can 100% appreciate liking villains and not caring that they do dodgy villainous shit, even just liking them bc they’re hot and wanting them to kiss a main character bc they have insanely good chemistry (yes i ship klaroline, no i won’t apologize for it, they could have been Really Great), it’s just really the double standard that gets me.

and all of this, incidentally, required ignoring some truly gross shit stefan was responsible for wrt his relationship with elena, that frankly it has always bothered me never really got addressed in the show. i get why elena herself would never be able to actually call him on it, but the fact is that he stalked her for months after he first saw her and thought she was katherine (meanwhile it only took damon .5 seconds to realize she was someone else entirely, but that’s another topic entirely), and then he deliberately inserted himself into her life because, in his words, ‘i have to know her’. he never gave a thought to how his presence in her life might affect her (or rather, he did, and tormented himself about it in his internal monologue, but never let this actually dissuade him from disrupting her life), and elena would wind up blaming herself for every tragedy that befell her friends and loved ones as a result of getting mixed up in vampire bullshit even though none of it was her fault--she literally blamed herself for existing but most of the fandom didn’t give a fuck about that lmfao--and stefan did shit like find out that she was adopted and then withhold this information from her until she got pissed about another secret he was keeping (her resemblence to katherine) and drop it on her to try and distract her from her very reasonable anger, and like... i should stop before this becomes a whole rant about how much i hate stefan fucking salvatore, but the point is, he did a lot of really sketchy shit he never answered for and elena never really took him to task for, and the fandom just kept eating up his insistence that he was the Good Brother and therefore he deserved to have elena, and if she didn’t want him anymore it was because she was a heinous bitch who didn’t deserve him.

uh.....i think i got off track there. and there’s probably a lot of shit i missed, like i think i was incandescent with rage for most of seasons 5 and 6 so i missed a lot of the interfandom shit cause i was too busy being increasingly pissed off at the show itself, but if nothing else this should give you an idea of how much of a goddamn cesspit the fandom was while the show as in its prime. there’s a reason both the show and the fandom have such a lousy reputation lmfao.
