If Be Cool Daphne and Mystery Inc. Fred met, they would be the best friends.

Daphne's Daphne Du Jour would immediately be traps, she would go all in, picking up rope and reading trapping magazines and going to study at the trap museum. Fred wouldn't even care if she somehow becomes better at it than him, bc he would be so excited to have a person to talk about traps with.

And when the day is over and Daphne switches to learning Portuguese or roller skating or something Fred would be a little sad but he would still be very supportive of whatever she's doing next. He would make her a scrapbook of all of her wacky hijinks (bc in MI he canonically scrapbooks) and then her Daphne Du Jour would be scrapbooking with him.

They would commiserate about how it feels for your interests to not be understood and just wanting to be whimsical in such and anti-whimsy society and when Fred tells her about everything his shitty parents did she puts the fake beard back on and says "I'm you dad now."

What are some of your favorite dynamics between characters?

this will be a long answer, because the gang's group dynamics is one of my favorite things to talk about. please bear with me haha (before anything: these views are purely my own. i know others have differing ideas for character/ship dynamics, and whatever i put here does not intend to challenge or demean any preference different from mine 🥺 our opinions can exist together lol) READ UNDER THE CUT

fred and velma: they are my gold standard for friendship. i think this dynamic is severely underrated as they are not only hilarious together, but they complement each other so well in terms of affirming each other's passion for mystery-solving, all the while keeping each other in check in case things get crazy. they strike me as the ideal friendship where the bond is meaningful, grounded and platonically intimate. one of the reasons why i like BCSD so much is that it showed just how well fred and velma work together in a way we haven't really seen in previous shows. ftr i think this is my favorite sub-group of the gang. velma and daphne (vaphne): i really like this ship, although i rank it behind varcie (i don't think i'll talk about varcie here since this might end up several pages long lol). this ship has been around forever, and i do think that it has a very good reason to exist mainly because of how the girls are such a positive presence in each other's lives. we've seen how daph has tried to get velma to come out of her shell on many occasions, and has shown that she understands her in a way that the boys will never do. meanwhile, velma acts as an anchor for daphne, keeping her on track when she gets overly excited or kooky during cases. i've always loved how different they are in all aspects, yet are able to foster a mutually beneficial relationship with each other. fred and daphne (fraphne): i know this is a basic ship, but i like how this has evolved over time, across many scooby media. SDMI really did this ship so much service by adding the much needed depth and justification why their dynamic works as well as it should. fred added a sense of adventure to daphne's otherwise sheltered life, and daphne has a good understanding of how to navigate fred's personality and quirks (much like how she is with velma). the show allowed these characters to play off each other and show us how they each deal with relationships that took a backseat in favor of mystery-solving in earlier iterations. daphne and shaggy (and scooby): ok these guys are FUN. like so much fun. i like that this was the group configuration for 13 ghosts, as i think their personalities lent so much entertainment to the idea of dealing with real supernatural phenomena (side note, but i like how the lego beach bash movie basically confirmed that they were the fun members of the gang lol). while i personally do not see shaggy and daphne as romantic partners, i totally understand why some people ship them and that's perfectly fine. velma and scooby: a girl and her canine best friend. whenever i draw velma and scooby in one picture, i make sure to show that they are the best of besties as much as i can. i am not subtle with my agenda to undo the optics damage SDMI did to these two lol

Hi hi, I was wondering if you had any recs for movies that had good Shaphne interactions or that you just enjoy in general?

Number one answer to be WELL fed is The Legend of the Phantosaur. That movie is so on top of showing you how good their dynamic is and shows how much she cares about him. It is a peak scooby movie as well so even if you don't love Shaphne you WILL love this movie TRUST.

I know that they aren't good movies but I do think that Shag and Daph's dynamic in the CN live action movies is so cute they are very heart eyes if you look through your shipping goggles 🤡🤡🤡. The theatrical live action films are fantastic and in my heart I think they are the best characterization of the gang but they aren't very Shaphne heavy. The first one is pretty Frelma heavy though so def watch it if they're your cup of tea.

I'll rapid fire a few more off the top of my head:

- Mask of the Blue Falcon (they have a fun antagonistic dynamic this movie which I ATE UP but the actual plot is lowkey boring 💀)

- Frankencreepy (random homage film to hot fuzz but it contains THE HUG)

- the KISS one (not a lot of Shaphne because Fraphne gets the b-plot this film but omg this movie unironically SLAPS)

- Stage Fright (I think this one is so funny but Fraphne also get the b-plot in this one)

- Music of the Vampire (I'm a sucker for random musicals)

- Camp Scare (they played this all the time on CN when I was a kid so this may just be for nostalgia)

I like both of those too! Absolutely 0 problem with them (otherwise watching the saga would be annoying don't you think?)

I think the most important thing is loving the characters first, independently of who the story puts them with. I'm watching Mystery Inc for the first time and their version of Fraphne is adorable, plus, it's impossible to dislike Freddie Prinze and Sarah Michelle Gellar's live action version.

There are some good versions of Shelma too. Not in Mystery Inc (what even was that) but Scooby Doo Apocalypse has them as the main couple and it was very fun, or the episode of Be Cool dedicated to truly develop their bond (Shaggy finding out he likes to study, Velma letting herself just eat a damn pretzel and stop worrying).

Independently from ships, what makes Scooby Doo what it is is the friendship of the gang. In fact the books trilogy I never shut up about (Vanishing Girl, Dark Deception and Buried Secrets) is based on Velma and Daphne's complicated friendship after years of not talking to each other thanks to a fight. Friendship is rarely the focus of media so that was great.

In short, I like Fraphne and Shelma too because I'm amazing and I want to enjoy everything

Canon Reasons not necessarily in order

This includes all of the series, films, books, etc that I can remember from the top of my head. Meaning, I have not watched/read all of them but plan to when possible!

WARNING: might be slightly repetitive because my writing skills do not always follow or translate the thinking process of my brain.

Their color combinations don’t make me wanna barf. It is very hard to get the complimentary colors of orange and blue together without them looking like the visual representation of nails on a chalkboard.

Smol x Tol. A height difference combination that rarely fails. Especially if their complimentary shapes also include short and curvy/plump with big and bulky/muscles.

Nerd-shaped Nerd x Jock-shaped Nerd

The Smart One (Logic) x The Other Smart One (Creativity). This is mostly applicable to the earlier late 60s-70s series before most of the later adaptations lower Fred’s intelligence to varying degrees. It can be generally agreed upon that Velma has a lot of book smarts and proven theories, while Fred leans more towards understanding engineering and mechanics (to an extent, seeing how his traps usually work out).

I am not interested in watching HBOMax’s VELMA for a variety of reasons, including but not limited to:

1) Copying and Pasting the format for the Harley Quinn series, which is also a black comedy/satire with mindless violence, constant swearing, and inappropriate depictions of adult content (as you can probably tell, I do not like the premise of, nor will watch, that series either. If any of you do like either of those series, that is okay; go ahead and enjoy.)

2) The interpretation of the Scooby without the Scooby Gang’s personalities (Their adaptational races and social statuses are fine.) is superficial at best and insulting at worst.

That being said, from what little I heard about what happens in VELMA, there could have been a cute dynamic between Velma and Fred. Unfortunately, neither of the characters seemed very likable based on what the creators said and how the Scooby fandom reacted. This artist best portrayed what Velma and Fred’s chemistry COULD HAVE LOOKED LIKE in these videos:

The Gunn live action films aren’t that much better frantically dodges bullets but there are more moments shown between Fred and Velma that despite some occasional bickering, Fred is wowed by Velma’s intelligence while Velma admires Fred’s confidence. I think as a younger kid, I was actually expecting them to end up together despite being a Fraphne shipper at the time because of their chemistry whenever they shared screentime.

Honestly? In the ending, the Fraphne kiss was a lot less satisfying to me than the moment when Fred steps down from the spotlight and directs it to Velma so she could finally get the credit and recognition she deserved in solving the mysteries and catching the villain.

Hey anon! I will always forever ship Fraphne. At least, I'd like to believe so. They have always been there during my formative years. Do I ship them in every verse... I guess? I do always watch out for their interactions in every iteration of them.

Sorry if I haven't really been able to do a lot of renders lately. It's really more of going back to having a full-time job that has always been physically and mentally draining, after a couple of years of just being a freelancer. So, all the creative juices have left my body.

With Velma... honestly, I don't really ship her so strongly with anyone. And I liked Beau (the guy from Zombie Island) as more of a source of conflict for Fred and Daphne, not really a romantic interest for Velma. (Back in the day, at least, I just don't care too much about his existence now.) I just like how Velma has softened during the inclusion of Marcie in SDMI S2 and the fact that she was voiced by Linda Cardellini.

💙 fraphne + the five love languages!! 💜

a silly ramble with some canon things, but mostly my own headcanons! these two have given me so much brainrot it is unfair

1) words of affirmation

they’re constantly uplifting and engaging in each others’ interests, even if it’s something they wouldn’t normally be into themselves. it starts off with an innocent “wow, can you tell me more about that?” mainly for the sake of seeing the other happily gush about Their Thing™, but then you just Know that they both go off and start obsessively researching each others’ interests only to become fascinated with them on their own terms!! they never wait until a moment of insecurity or doubt to make the other feel good about themselves, they’re just constantly reminding one another of how proud they are of them to the point where it’s a little cheesy. daphne is much better at wording compliments: “they’re going to love you. they’ll be blown away by your ideas, i just know it!” while fred is better with reassurance: “hey, don’t worry about anything. i’ll never leave you, ever.” they also put little sticky-note messages for one another on like. everything. to an absurd degree. they prefer it to texting, it's just a small something that can always make their day!!

2) physical touch

daphne finds herself naturally jumping into fred’s arms often when she’s scared/needs comfort or just wants to mess with him. fred never minds the suddenness or the teasing. and if fred has pulled an all-nighter working on something, he usually finds himself dozing off on daphne’s shoulder. daphne never minds the restlessness or the snoring. fred also just gives really good hugs. you just know he does. and the hand holding. oh my god the hand holding. whether it be linking pinkies, holding the other’s wrist or fully interlacing fingers, there’s rarely a moment when they’re not physically connected in some small way. they made each other swear a vow when they were younger that they will continue to hold hands even if they’ve had an argument, as a way of physically reminding the other that they still care about them even if they might be angry right now. it looks a little silly from afar, but it helps them to laugh off trivial disagreements quickly.

3) giving gifts

daphne is just. constantly spending money on fred and he has to tell her to Not Do That!! but she does it anyway because she loves him!! she is the definition “hey i saw this at the store and it made me think of you”. equally, fred will pretend that he didn’t see daphne eyeing that plushie or that dress, but it’ll be the first thing she opens on her next birthday. both know that material possessions aren’t everything, but when they give gifts, They Give Gifts!! they know each other inside out, and every purchase is filled with meaning, thought and love. they are also fond of making things for one another! daphne is handy with crafts and sewing, and in particular loves to needle felt!! she has felted many a friend for mr trapples. meanwhile, fred is obviously great with mechanics and woodwork, and has invented many a bizarre yet clever contraption in order to help daphne with whatever she may need. some are more useful than others, but it's the thought that counts!

4) acts of service

fred is probably the king of this one. he finds household chores oddly therapeutic, so he takes care of the ones that he hasn't built an overly-elaborate contraption for and/or knows daphne doesn’t like. his cooking isn’t exactly the best-looking or most flavourful, but it’s made with love!! with every breakfast in bed for his gf he improves a little. meanwhile, daphne is always taking trips down to the store for the foods fred likes, and volunteers as a test dummy for his traps when needed (provided that it isn't one that will hurt her, of course). in high school they are/were the Gods of study sessions. fred is stronger on sciences and number-based subjects, while daphne is better with english and humanities. so a bit like shaggy and scooby in frankencreepy, together they make one whole (academic) brain and will single-handedly destroy the school system. all they need are some snacks and some cushions, and they can be sitting at the coffee table in fred's living room basically tutoring one another for hours on end!!

5) quality time

fred is always eager to carry daphne’s bags on shopping trips, and god if it weren’t for her impeccable taste in picking outfits for him he would definitely be wearing the same shirt every single day. i think they just love to try all sorts of different clothes for the fun of it, competing to create the stupidest combinations possible and getting into breathless laughing fits until one of them tries on something that suits them so well and the other just smiles this huge goofy grin and sheds a single tear. meanwhile, when Trappin’ Time™ eventually rolls around in their latest mystery, daphne secretly gets so excited to pull a lever, set up a tripwire or press a button. it seems small and silly, but she knows it’s a memory that fred will treasure, and over time she grows to treasure each one herself, and the little part she got to play in it. every little thing they do together is precious to them, from movie nights, to singing showtunes together while driving, to just wordlessly cuddling on the sofa.

I know that a lot of people ship Fred and Daphne together... But honestly with where I’m at in watching these old Scooby-Doo serieses... I kinda think that’s a bad idea...? In these old series, Fred and Daphne’s friendship feels like one borne from the fact that both of them are constantly almost getting themselves and others killed. Both just stare death in the face and laugh! And... Just... If these two idiots were a couple or got married... Like... Who’s going to stop them from accidentally killing people!? WHO’S GOING TO STOP THEM FROM ACCIDENTALLY KILLING THEMSELVES!?! Linda Cardellini's Velma and Freddie Prince Jr's Fred also made me ship Frelma when I was a kid!!! Those are my first take on Frelma. Do you have any Frelma hc for that movie-verse? (I remember Fred looking at her with heart eyes in the second movie)

Their chemistry in this movie is seriously palpable and they are very near and dear to my heart!

I think I've said this before but my characterization of the gang is mainly derived from the way they are written in these movies. It wasn't intentional, it was more something I realized later on. I just like nuance each character gets in those movies through their imperfections and their flaws. It's not just Shag and Scoob who have issues - if anything their issues are understandable. Daph is a well-meaning pretty girl who just so happens to kick serious ass. Fred is a major dork who just gets lost in his own ambition sometimes. And Velma is very similar to him in that regard. But Velma also takes a new kind of center stage in those movies. She wants a different kind of acknowledgement from the gang. She's not just the smart girl who can pump out deductions and then get paid in fist bumps. Like Daphne, she wants to know where her value lies with the gang.

More specifically, where her value lie with Fred.

And she gets that because it's made clear that Fred has a huge amount of respect for her, as his equal.

I know that Fraphne over all win out in the end with that movie but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy all the content you get from Fred and Velma's lighthearted flirting.

Headcanons for this specific thing would be kinda slim seeing as Fred is dating somebody else. What I can tell you how I think the movie would have ended if Fraphne didn't get together.

I think the main thing here is that Frelma probably wouldn't be canon at the end of the first movie.

They just patched up a very broken friendship with only tiny inklings of being into each other romantically.

Fred and Daphne just randomly kissing after not talking to one another for years works because Daphne can and will always put passion above common sense.

Here's this guy that she's always had a back and forth with.

They just saved the day, her hair looks great. Why shouldn't she put her own cherry on top?

Velma on the other hand, she'll need time to move further along in her relationship with him.

It's clear they both want...something. But they don't know where to go from there.

So there's no dramatic and spectacular kiss (save that for monsters unleashed) but maybe Velma is brave enough to weave their fingers together.

He's a little shocked by her forwardness but smiles down at her.

She blushes and looks down at her feet because she never expected to see Freddie ever look at her that way. Completely and perfectly content being in her company.

Once she's recovered, she looks back up at him and says, "Let's get the hell off this island Jones."

can i just be honest i can’t see Shaggy and Daphne being a couple in the mid 80’s. like i respect the ship and Shaphne fans and i love the new scooby doo and scrappy doo, new mysteries, and 13 Ghosts but when i watch those i just don’t see it? Shaggy and Daphne just seem like close friends to me. and i don’t get when people say “yeah Shaphne was there first” for that reason. i don’t know it’s probably because i haven’t been a Shaphne fan for years at this point. but yeah they just seem like good friends to me in the mid 80’s. i also don’t get it when some people say “yeah Zombie Island took Shaphne’s plot and made it Fraphne and totally ignored mid 80’s Scooby in favor of doing Fraphne” for the reason stated above plus i think Zombie Island was trying to not follow mid 80’s Scooby at all and instead be its own thing when it came out, so like obviously it wasn’t going to be like mid 80’s Scooby. not everything needs to have Shaphne in it just because you like it. also i don’t get it when some people are like “Fraphne was there from the beginning” because like… no it wasn’t?? i enjoy Fraphne but it wasn’t there since 1969, it came way later in the franchise and that’s okay! we can admit that! there also wasn’t even any romance in the gang in SDWAY. all the romance stuff came later.

I know it’s played for harmless laughs, but I can’t help but get annoyed by Scooby always finding ways to swipe Shaggy’s food. Scooby no Swiping!!

Also, why are the malts/shakes/ice cream always pink? Is strawberry the popular flavor in their area.

The butler has a pretty nifty design. I sure hope he’s not the culprit.

Shelma time everybody! Also, do they really think the butler would be dumb enough to let them in when they CLEARLY didn’t change their normal outfits beyond adding some maid/chef hats and aprons? Additional Fraphne underneath the covered cart while Scooby is underneath the cloche.

C.L. Magnus, owner of the freighters that keep getting attacked by the Ghost of Redbeard, has a nice, rich voice. I’m immediately suspicious.

Does a decoy count as a trap?

Shaggy uses too much power on the motor for the boat the Scooby Gang is using and it goes off without them.

Funny Shelma moment as they both try paddling the boat away but neither of them notice they are paddling in opposite directions.

If these weren’t our main characters and heroes, a collision from a ship that size against their tiny boat would have killed everyone.

“Oh! My Hairdo!” Because that’s what the writers think conventionally pretty teen girls think about in a life and death situation 🤪

Also, correct me if I’m wrong, but this looks like the first time the gang split up without Fred’s instructions (somehow still making it Fred + Daphne + Velma and Shaggy + Scooby.)

Shaggy and Scooby somehow are able to climb along the rotten, splintered looking hull (?) of the pirate ship, find an open window, and squeeze through into an empty room. I call shenanigans.

“Like, let’s hope the others made it [aboard] too.” Oh they did. We just probably won’t see it.

I stand corrected; we cut to the next scene of Fred, Velma, and Daphne SOMEHOW having been able to climb all the way up the hull and onto a deserted deck. SHE. NANI. GANS.

Upon finding dry ice that somehow creates enough “fog” for Redbeard’s ghost ship: “I think we found ourselves a clue.” Is this the first time we hear the gang saying this phrase???

Redbeard was crafty enough to lure Daphne, Fred, and Velma into a room he didn’t actually go in so he could trap them.

Shaggy is able to get Redbeard to spare his and Scooby’s lives by offering to cook for the crook.

Watching Shaggy and Scooby mix in chains, stove ashes, cobwebs, and soap with seawater to feed the captain makes me partially cringe and partially giggle knowing the Ghost of Redbeard isn’t actually a ghost.

I wonder if it was this episode or one of the more recently previous ones that the writers wrote Shaggy and Scooby to be a lot more naive and quick to assume that the supernatural was real, or if they/Shaggy just think ghosts are more real than werewolves?

That or they are just joking to themselves and are purposely trying to feed the “ghost” something that will make him sick so they can get away. If so, apologies for doubting you, boys.

“Soap!” *offering to add it as an additional ingredient to the stew.* “Soap? I hardly use it myself, but why not?” Bruh. 🤨

Redbeard immediately smells something fishy and makes Shaggy and Scooby eat the stew. “B-but we aren’t hungry!” Aha, so they were trying to trick him and make him sick? (Or they don’t like the idea of eating ghost pirate stew since they wouldn’t eat werewolf moonbeams in an earlier episode? (See Episode 11: A Gaggle of Galloping Ghosts))

Somehow the soap in the stew make Shaggy and Scooby spit out enough bubbles to blind Redbeard and escape.

I will be impressed if Shaggy’s makeshift paper pirate hats for him and Scoob succeed in helping them blend in the pirate crew, despite the crew having seen them before.

Color me impressed: Shaggy’s actually using the paper hat to make a shadow silhouette. He also demonstrates another voice talent —mimicry— to successfully trick the goons into thinking he’s Redbeard and throw them off their trail.

They goof and accidentally fall overboard, but they manage to fall right on the side where Fred and the girls are captured, so follow the ship from behind to rescue their friends.

“Skull Island.” What, was Cranium Enclave not spooky enough of a name?

“Boy, this mystery’s getting more mysterious by the minute!” Ya don’t say?

Nope, random triangular fin that was following Shaggy and Scooby for no reason other than laughs.

Redbeard leaves three teens in a room with the key right there on the table because how was he supposed to know that Fred inexplicably carries random straws and a chewed wad of gum to macgyver a tool to nab the keys and free themselves? (That or Fred saw the straws and gum in the room they were held in or in this room lying about and thought on his feet and macgyverred a makeshift tool.)

Velma’s solution to pick which random tunnel to take? “Eeny, meenie, miney mo! 😌”

When Shaggy sneaks up behind Velma: “AAAA!!”; When Shaggy snuck up behind Daphne in Episode 3: Hassle in the Castle : “💥!!!! 😵‍💫”

Turns out the paper Shaggy used to make a pirate hat (and continued to wear) was the ship’s manifest listing the schedule of and the cargo carried by the Magnus Freighters. Confirmation that the butler did it contrary to me not wanting to suspect him? Or is Mr. Magnus pulling the strings behind Redbeard for whatever reason?

Guessing random passwords somehow works. Also, does liverwurst actually taste that good in order to be one of Shaggy’s favorite foods?

Oh. Maybe there was a hidden camera in that security device after all, and Redbeard opened up the secret passage anyway to trap the Scooby Gang. He’s going to fail in the end, obviously, but this guy is one of the gang’s more intelligent antagonists 🤡

How lucky that the crate Shaggy and Scoob wind up hiding in also contains Scooby Snacks.

Pffft! They share the treats and both holler out “SCOOBY DOO!” while breaking free.

Only cartoon shenanigans can explain how an eggbeater can tickle a grown man wearing what looks like layers of leather pirate clothing.

Tbf, when I was a child, I though Jackhammers were heavy duty pogo sticks. Then again, I was a child. Shaggy is a teenager.

Jackhammer somehow gets Shaggy and Scoob up cavern wall, onto the ceiling and right above Redbeard. When they get off via falling, the jackhammer winds up in the back of Redbeard’s pants without smashing his head or breaking his spine.

Here comes the navy(?) to help arrest the criminals.

Oh. What do you know? I was right to suspect Mr. Magnus. Yay me!!!
