Phantasm (1979) Review

Spoilers (obviously)

Soundtrack: 10/10!! The best part of the whole movie imo. The spooky piano pairs so well with the synthy bass and drums. I was jamming out for most of the movie. Sadly, I can only find bits of it on youtube so far but I will keep looking!

Special Effects: 8/10. Gotta love practical effects! The alien blood was nice and goopy. I liked how they did it when Mike falls through the portal and is flailing in red space. Loved the part with the murder sphere! And the surprise explosion was awesome. The weird fly monster was also fun and is worth mentioning.

Acting: 6.5/10 but I didn't care. Its all pretty goofy and I'm super her for it.

Dialogue: 5/10, pretty funny and just not the way anyone actually talks. Again though, did not detract from my enjoyment!

Cinematography: Fuck if I know, I'm not a film person. I did really like how the scene in the funeral home at the beginning was shot though.

Concept: 9/10! Finding out the whole reason for the Tall Man stealing and altering bodies was pretty satisfying. I'm very easily pleased by story elements like that. Also just the whole idea of this guy doing this for centuries just to get some undead slave labor for his homeworld is pretty fun.

Final Score: 7.5/10

I had a bunch of fun watching this. I wanted something weird with horror and sci-fi elements and I 100% got it. The soundtrack carried the movie so much, I loved it! I would have still loved it if it was sub-par because I'm easy to please, but it was anything but. Every scene was vastly improved by the score that accompanied it.

I thought the older brothers off screen death at the very end was kinda lame. And suddenly Reggie is okay too?? Its like they switched places. I would have preferred if it was Jodie that lived and Reggie that died, which I guess goes to show that Jodies death matters more. And it does! So why did they just kinda tell you that it happened in the last 5 or 10 minutes? Beats me.

The Tall Man is an awesome character. I got a real kick out of his aggressive stride and constant scowl. My favorite parts were when he showed how ridiculously strong he was. Manhandling the casket, dramatically blowing down doors, punching through windows... go you, spaceman! And his fingers turn into space flies when they're cut off! Good stuff.

Anyway go watch it. Its fun (:
