“alright, class," professor sinitra said at the end of the astronomy lesson. "that's the end for today. i'll see you all next week. and don't forget your essays about your birth planet!”
“finally,” you sighed in relief. “i am so exhausted.” you hated these friday astronomy lessons at midnight. but you were grateful you didn't need to be up early the next day.
“me too,” pandora yawned. she looked as if she was already half asleep. everyone seemed to be. except james potter, who was now making his way to you with an energetic smile on his face.
“hello, y/n," he grinned and you tried to ignore the way your heart skipped a beat.
“hello, jamie.”
“can i walk you to ravenclaw tower?” he asked you and you raised your eyebrow. “it's not safe for a pretty girl like you to walk around the castle at night.”
“i won't be alone,” you replied. “i got pando—” you turned around to your friend who was next to you just five seconds ago. however, she was nowhere to be seen then. “or no. . . well, then i guess you can walk me.”
on the way, you notice james walked unusually slow. he always walked so fast that you almost had to run to catch up with him but this evening, it seemed as if you were faster than him. as if he wanted to make this walk last as long as possible.
you smiled as you shook your head at the ridiculous thought. you and james were only friends. you've always been just that.
“do you wanna hang out tomorrow at hogsmeade?” james suddenly asked.
you glanced at him. “what about the boys?”
“well, sirius and remus are having a date and peter still feels sick. it would be just the two of us. we could go to honey dukes and get the strawberry chocolate you like so much. and then we could stop at madam puddifoot's and get some tea and cake,” he offered. it almost sounded like a date. you cursed yourself again for the thought.
“you hate madam puddifoot's,” you pointed out the flaw in his plan.
“but you like her jasmine tea,” james said. and i like you, he wanted to add. “come on, it's my treat.”
you rolled your eyes. “you don't need to pay me for hanging out with you, jamie. i'd love to spend time with you in hogsmeade. it'll be fun."
james waited at you in front of the ravenclaw tower at ten in the morning sharp, just like he promised.
despite the fact that it was not a date and just two friends hanging out, you spend quite some time getting ready, wanting it to be perfect.
pandora teased you from her spot on her bed as she watched you chosing between two outfits — dark blue sweatshirt with black skirt and black sweatshirt with white skirt (you chose the second option in the end). you could only roll your eyes and deny every single one of her accusations but you both knew very well what was the truth.
james was wearing his gryffindor sweatshirt and opted to pair it with black pants. his hair was a mess, as always, looking like he had just gotten out of the bed without even trying to style it. he complained about it often but you thought it suited him well.
“ready?" he asked with his hands in his pockets, a smile lighting up his face.
“ready.” you nodded.
“where do you wanna go first?” james questioned as you two entered the village. a lot of people were there every day, but especially today when almost five hundred of hogwarts students decided to spend the day there.
“i'd really love to get the tea at madam puddifoot's now,” you answered honestly. “i'm feeling rather cold and need to warm up,” you blew warm breath on your hands and rubbed them together, hoping for at least temporally feeling of warmth. but it was no use. you almost couldn't feel your fingers anymore.
“why didn't you take gloves with you?” james asked.
“i lost them,” you replied with a pout on your lips. james then took off his pair of black gloves from his hands and handed them to you. “i— but. . what about you?”
he waved it off. “don't worry. i'll be fine.”
“are you sure?”
he nodded and you could tell he really meant it.
you two ended up at three broomsticks for a late lunch. despite each of you eating a piece of cake, a chocolate bar and shared a packet of sour candies, you two found yourselves quite hungry after all the walking.
madam rosmerta greeted you as soon as you walked in (though she was mainly talking to james, who ordered two butterbeers and then winked at her) and you chose a table by the window.
“what would you like?” james asked. “it's on me.”
you gave him a look. “i am not completely broke, y'know? you paid enough for me today. let me pay for you once, too.”
“not happening,” was james's immediate response as he shook his head. “i am a gentleman.”
“i never said you weren't,” you laughed. “but you can't pay for me all the time. i'm not your girlfriend.”
that seemed to shut him up as he couldn't think of anything else to say. at that moment, rosmerta came to your table with butterbeers and asked what would you like to have for your meal.
“i'll have shephard's pie," you spoke.
“beef pasties for me. thank you, rosmerta,” james smiled.
“thank you for today, jamie,” you said once the woman walked away. “i really needed this. i've been so stressful with everything that's going on.”
the boy knew exactly what you were talking about. attacks on muggles and muggleborn wizards and witches have been more and more frequent this year. a lot of your friends were muggleborns, and so was your dad. you prayed every day, begging whoever was up there to not let anything happen to those you loved.
james nodded understandingly. he, too, was worried for the future of the wizarding world. and he knew that he will be joining the order of the phoenix as soon as he could, and he'd be fighting for the good side as hard as he could.
his hand reached across the table for yours, squeezing it lightly for some kind of comfort to give you. you smiled sadly at him and sweets his hand back.
“yeah, me too. i'm sure everything will be okay,” he tried to reassure you. but you both weren't so sure. you weren't going to ruin this moment, though.
“thank you. it's nice to have a friend like you,” you said and james nodded.
yeah, he thought. a friend.
from across the room, remus and sirius, although they were on their own date, were watching you two with an immense interest.
“remus, he touched her hand!” sirius whisper-yelled at his boyfriend and hit him lightly as if he was trying to catch his attention as if remus wasn't spying on you two either. “he touched her hand!”
“yes, sirius, i'm not blind!” remus replied.
“come on, kiss!” the dark-haired boy began to pray. “i'm tired of them tiptoeing around each other like that.”
remus raised an eyebrow as he looked at sirius. “you did the same with me.”
“shut up.”
a month later, it was valentine's day and you had no one to spend it with.
all of your friends were going on a date with their partners or potential partners, but you were in bed with book.in your hands and a cup of tea on your bedside table. no one was in your dorm, leaving you completely interrupted to get lost in the story.
that was until there was a knock on your door.
you groaned. the words on the pages seemed to be getting rather. . . interesting.
"who is it?"
"your favourite boy in the whole world." was the answer and you quickly sat up and fixed your appearance. you'd recognize that voice anywhere.
"come in!" the door opened, revealing james in a black suit and a big boquet of flowers in his hand. your mouth opened at his look. he looked really attractive, don't get me wrong, but you couldn't understand why was he dressed like that. "what's going on?"
"well, dear y/n, me and you are going on a date, that's what's going on."
"on a date?" you asked, furrowing your eyebrows. "as. . . friends?"
james shook his head. "no, not as friends. we're more than that." he didn't give you a time to say anything before he continued with, "get ready. i'll wait in the common room."
you blinked in confusion as you watched him close the door and then you squealed once you were sure he was far enough to not hear you.

"stressed out, love?"
reo's gentle voice pulled you out of your trance. you'd been working for 4, no, 5 hours? maybe 6, to be honest. at this point, you've lost count. you fell backwards in your chair with an exasperated sigh. you were tired. very, very tired. not only that, you'd have to wake early in the morning the following day.
"yeah." you replied as you stretched your arms above your head. "but dont worry! i'll be done soon."
reo gave you an accusatory look. "what counts as 'soon,' y/n?"
you gulped. "...a few more hours?"
reo sighed, throwing his head into his hand. "y/n, y/n, y/n. what am i going to do with you?"
he gave you an exhausted look, but it wasn't a look of annoyed exhaustion. he could never be annoyed with you, after all. it was a look of love; specifically, a look of love for the one he loves.
"i'll be quick! i pro - WOAH!"
without warning, reo had picked you up and was holding you bridle-style. he pressed a gentle kiss to your forehead as he walked over to your shared bed and sat down.
"reo! im sorry, but i need to finish my work! this is the final stretch, i swear!" you protested, not that it would make any difference.
"sorry, love, but you need to take a break. its not healthy to go go go until you collapse, you know? you'll be able to focus better if you take a break, too." he replied, laying you down against him.
"well, sure, but-" you were cut short by... huh? what was that? heaven? god's divine power? it was easily the most wonderful sensation you had ever felt in your entire life. two slim hands were gently massaging your scalp and doing absolute wonders for your mood, fatigue, and entire self, to be honest.
"break time! i'll give you a super-duper absolutely amazing reo head massage to wash away the stress of the day!" he declared as he gently massaged your scalp.
it felt so. freaking. good. reo was super good at head massages because nagi loved them, so they were honestly the closest thing you'd get to heaven until you got to see the real thing. he gently scratched and padded at your scalp and ran his soft hands through your hair. he had a way of hitting just the right spots with just the right amount of pressure that made for the ultimate massage. you felt yourself beginning to melt as reo gently worked his magic.
melting so much, in fact, that you let yourself close your eyes. only for a moment, though, of course.
"...huh?" the room was dark when you awoke. there was no more light and you couldn't see a thing. from across the room, however, you could see the illumination of the clock reading 3:01 AM. you'd been asleep for a little over an hour. you must've dozed off when reo was giving his "super duper absolutely amazing reo head massage" to your tired head. suddenly, you heard soft snores, and immediately recognized them as reo's. he must've fallen asleep after you did. it was then when you realized that his arms were around you, too, and you two had fallen asleep in each others embrace.
you still had work to do, sure, but you supposed it could be held off until tomorrow.

Ch 1 Ch 2 Ch 3 Ch 4
Chapter 5
Royal Introductions
Exhausted, I lay there, eyes closed, not wanting to move. I'm this close to dozing off before Marc leans in and kisses my neck, "You should use the bathroom before you fall asleep."
"No"
"You could get a UTI."
"Nothing magic can't fix" Without opening my eyes I wave my hand around like a wand, "Goodbye, UTI "
He quietly chuckles, "You're a comedian you know that?" He scoops me up and takes me to the bathroom, "Don't expect me to wipe for you" He drops me down and closes the door behind me.
Once I was done, I wash my hands and look in the mirror. My makeup is a hot ass mess; too embarrassed, I decided to take a shower to wash away my mess. I hear a small knock on the door.
"Come in" I reply
"Hey love, mind if we join?" by the happy tone of his voice it was Steven.
"Yes on one condition. Can you wash my hair" I ask
"I've literally always wanted to do this" He laughs. Steven sneaks in behind me and begins to shampoo my hair. He thoroughly massaged my scalp and ran soap from my roots to the end of my hair.
This is so comforting.
I don't allow many people to touch my hair. Honestly, Aunt May and Bucky were the only ones to wash my hair before this. May's gone and Bucky checked out.
Ughhh I don't want to see him tomorrow
Refocusing on my anxious thoughts, I realize Steven is unusually quiet, "What's on your mind hun"
Steven hesitates
I turn around and rest my arms around his neck and look him in the eyes, "You can tell me" I smile.
"I used to wash Layla's hair like this." he sadly responds, "I'm sorry, probably don't want to hear about our ex right after sex" he nervously laughs.
Leaning my head on his chest I sigh, "I'm hung up on my ex too; no need to protect my feelings hun, we all went into this agreement with no intentions of a relationship. Just a couple of broken people with needs" I joke. "But seriously you can talk about anything with me. When was the last time you spoke with her?"
"A few months. The last time we spoke, we fought. She said she hated us and left."
"I seriously doubt she means that. She was very upset and probably felt outnumbered by you 3. Want my advice?"
"Always"
"Reach out and ask to talk. Listen to her, don't interrupt, just let her get it out. Remember, Listen to understand not Respond. Marc and Jake, I'm talking to you."
"They say they resent that" he laughs. "Thank you, Millie"
"Of course"
We eventually get out, dry off, and head to bed. They fall asleep first and I lay there in their arms lost in thought.
I really do hope they fix it with Layla. I would be lying if I said I don't feel anything for them; It would be nice to end up with them but it could never work; they age, and I don't. How am I to have a normal life when I can't even grow old with someone? I refuse to let myself love someone ill have to eventually bury. I did try with Bucky though, I even looked into giving up my immortality for him.
Wasn't enough I guess
I push those thoughts out of my head for now and allow myself to sleep.
------------
The boys gift me a t-shirt and a pair of their favorite sweats as a replacement for the dress Jake ripped.
"Don't be a stranger, and reach out to Layla. Sooner rather than later okay?" with that, I give them a parting hug and kiss before I portal home.
Finally home I let out a long sigh and do a full-body stretch.
"Hey, you're home!" Peter yells before he runs to hug me, he looks down at my clothes and gives me a puzzled look, "what happened to your dress?
"Don't ask questions you don't really want the answer to."
He deadpans and walks backward, "You need church, a baptism, shit maybe an exorcism too"
I laugh, "What I need is a shower" The boys and I had an early morning; we fucked twice, 3 times if you count them eating me out before we got interrupted by their landlord.
I go take a quick shower and wash off last night/this morning's sex-scapades. Once again I do my makeup; nothing extravagant just something natural to highlight my features. After my face is done I check my hair and fix my edges.
I finally dress in my formal battle attire; a black leather high low tunic dress with gold accents as well as a white and gold shoulder cape I break out for special occasions like this. It's giving 'Game of Thrones meets Castlevania'. All jokes aside my uniform is interesting.
I found it tucked away in the Kamar Taj one day and when I touched it I felt strange. There was an old ancient energy about it so I decided to leave it there. But for a week straight I found it in places that it shouldn't be. One day I even buried it, and then the next day I woke up with it at the foot of my bed, dirt and all. I finally took it to Wong and he informed me that it was a magical relic and essentially chose me as its owner.

Artwork by Me (Super rough drawing that I finished at 2am; just trying to give you a general idea)
'The Regalia of Rowena'; the original owner was Rowena Hemlocke an infamous witch who tried to harness the sun's power. Legend says it almost worked, but she couldn't handle the heat and disintegrated in a matter of seconds; all that remained was her clothes. Some would say that's a red flag but my toxic trait is that it picked me, so obviously it's true love.
Hehe
Finally, all done, I look over myself and I honestly feel beautiful. Not sexy or hot, but beautiful; It feels really good. I grab my suitcase and meet peter in the living room. Peter is dressed in a simple black suit, his Spidey suit isn't necessarily formal.
"You have everything you need? All the essentials? All your chargers? Your suit just in case?"
"Yes, yes, yes & Yes. You look intense; like I am kind of intimidated by both your beauty and power. Is this a slay?"
"Yes, Peter this is a slay" I laugh hysterically "Come on let's go, can't leave a Queen waiting" I open a portal.
The Vibe:
Otis Redding - Try A Little Tenderness
We step through and find ourselves outside of the Royal Palace. Immediately the royal staff took our bags to our rooms.
"This place is remarkable," Peter says in awe. "Just insane"
"I know right? You are gonna love Shuri's lab."
"Oh, I bet. I'm gonna walk around okay?"
"Okay, don't go far doors open any minute" Peter nods and walks away; I take a look around and see who else is here. No one I know, just a bunch of Wakandan leaders and noblemen. I think we are the only outsiders invited.
Spoke to Soon
James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes. I almost forgot he was coming. He's wearing black slacks and a dark blue sweater with a black coat over it. Doesn't sound like much, but Bucky is a simple man, I'm honestly surprised he's not in his signature leather jacket.
He cut his hair, It looks good
Staring and lost in thought I didn't notice him staring back. He sheepishly smiles at me, I quickly look away too embarrassed and sad. All the old unresolved emotions hit me like a car crash, I start to get anxious and nauseous. Around me, the air started to cool and the wind picked up rapidly;. the clouds begin to darken. The people around mutter in confusion; I can't breathe, I can't move, I can't speak.
Suddenly a comforting hand touches my shoulder. Shaking and on the verge of tears, I look and see who it was, Namor.
"Walker of Clouds indeed, I see you truly are a descendent of Ororo." He calmly speaks "Breathe." he pauses "It'll pass"
I close my eyes and focus on my breathing, after a few seconds everything around me slowly calms. It passed, I put my hand on my heart and breath for a few more beats, before I open my eyes. "Thank you" I softly say
So maybe I can control the weather...
He nods, "Are you okay Ki'ichpan (beautiful girl)?"
"I'm getting there." I chuckle. Namor was wearing his normal royal jewelry in addition to golden shoulder plates, kind of like armor; attached were red and white robes that flowed nicely in the wind. "I didn't think you would come. Also, we gotta talk about this 'Ki'ichpan' business. Can't keep casually calling me beautiful in all of our conversations"
"I almost didn't. My people advised against me being here but if we are to work with the Wakandans, it must be done. If anything happens my people are near." he leans into my ear, "I will call you beautiful because you are." The hand he has on my shoulder sneaks down to my lower back. "This is a lovely dress you're wearing. You look very," he pauses, "commanding"
Nervously I laugh, "You are one hell of a sweet talker," I look him dead in the eye, "Flattery will get you nowhere."
He deviously smiles.
I think he took that as a challenge.
Before he responds Peter returns, "uhhh" Peter looks at Namor's hand placement "Everything good here?"
"Yes, Peter everything is fine, just talking to a friend."
Without even acknowledging Peter, he looks at me, "Is this your Twin Flame Ki'ichpan?" he asks with a hint of frustration.
Is he angry?
"Ew" Peter and I say in tandem.
"This is my brother, Peter. Peter this King Namor ruler of..." I look at Namor for Help
Namor hesitates to respond, "Peter can keep a secret as easily as breathing air. You can trust him. All of us here are allies, you have my word" I assure
"Talokan. Ruler of Talokan" Namor Responds
"Well, it's great to meet you Namo- Mr. Namor sir. I mean King" Peter fumbles
"Namor is fine" he smiles
Before we could continue with introductions the doors to the palace open and we all file in, one by one. As we walk through, the announcers introduce us one by one. He gets to Namor,
"Introducing for the first time ever, King Namor ruler of Underwater Kingdom Talokan" Namor Bows and Walks away.
"UNDERWATER?" Peter whispered and yelled.
"So amazing," I say in awe
It was our turn to be announced, "Welcome Millaenyia Parker, primordial earth witch, master of the elements, And her brother Peter Parker, Spiderman, protector of New York " he pauses "One of the many heroes of the Batlle of Earth"
Peter and I bow and continue forward.
"They remember me?" Peter whispers
"Unfortunately no, but did you think I'd let them announce you as just a plus one" I reply
"Thank you" he smiles
"Of course" I respond
"Alrighty let's get through the night without embarrassing ourselves," Peter says
"No Promises" I nervously smile
Let the show begin

「Soft moments with Bakugou」
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
when you decide to paint together, however drunk; the painting that used to look nice and tidy is now spread across the room as you and bakugo sing some random music off-key, using the drink bottles as a microphone. you don’t know why, but you can’t take your eyes off each other and laugh; like happy children. and you also don’t know how you started slowly dancing to an upbeat pop song, but you were so cozy against his chest and his hand so soft on your waist and the other holding yours that honestly you didn’t want answers now, just enjoy this crazy moment with him.
you travel to the city where your favorite series/movie was recorded; you spend a lot of time going places to recreate your favorite iconic scenes. you two lose count of how many pictures and videos you two took, and at the end of the day you are both exhausted from walking; but it was all worth it, because you two would repeat it all over again just to see each other smile.
you go to an arcade together and see two kids playing a game, they say it’s too hard and you two just exchange looks like “bullshit, we can handle it”; but when you two start playing the game, you both realize that those kids were really overreacting, because the game is harder than they said. you two barely blink as you try to finish the game and you just realize you’ve gone too far when one of the arcade staff says they’re closing and you two need to leave. you look at each other, knowing that tomorrow you will come back to finish this damn game.
you go to your favorite cafe, but decide to do something different this time; you sit at a table in the corner and, as you drink and eat, you two start making funny stories for each person in the cafe, like a man asking for strong black coffee probably hasn’t slept in two days, or a tired looking woman probably has three cats and one of them is called a smelly cat.. you two just realize how far you’ve gone when your stomachs start to hurt from laughing so hard.
the two of you watching a horror movie while there’s a storm outside; he can’t help but laugh every time you yell or squeeze his arm. he rolls his eyes and kisses your forehead, wrapping his arm around you as he promises he’ll protect you and that nothing bad will happen - but actually he’s scared too and he just hugged you because he’s comfortable in yours arms.
you wake up and bakugo is not beside you, his bedside is cold and you get up from the bed with a pout, because he left earlier than usual and he didn’t say goodbye to you; but when you walk into the kitchen, you see him doing something on the stove. you smile and wrap your arms lazily around his waist and whisper softly “i thought you were gone” and he replies “no, i’m just making pancakes”. you leave a few soft kisses on his back and shoulders, and he just laughs saying “nice try, but you’re the one doing the dishes later”
you and he try to make a puzzle; while eating and drinking, and talking about nothing and everything at the same time. but the puzzle is harder than you two thought and inadvertently you spend all night laughing at god knows what while trying to solve this damn puzzle. but at the end of the night (honestly early morning) you look at each other tiredly, proud that it’s finally done.
you guys deciding to get a tattoo together; the idea came from a random moment when the two of you couldn’t sleep at 3 am, and you stayed until sunrise looking for inspiration on pinterest. on tattoo day, he holds your hand gently, stroking the back of it with his thumb as if it might calm you down a bit.
one day, you’re giggling at something he said, looking ahead at the colorful sky painted by the setting sun. little do you know that he’s staring at your side profile, completely lovestruck. with a smile on his face, he cups your cheek and guides your face towards him as he leans in. it’s a sweet kiss, neither able to stop yourselves from smiling into the kiss.
he loves scribbling in your notebooks or on your skin. it’s a catchy little habit. sometimes, during study or work sessions, you take a bathroom break, and when you come back you find cute little drawings with short, encouraging messages in the corner of your notebook. he always acts like he didn’t, but you don’t have to ask. you just smile and go back to your work, feeling even more energized and excited, and most of all; loved. and sometimes, when you go out with friends, he lets you talk while he borrows a pen and lazily scribbles two sticks holding hands, and on top of their heads the initials of your name and his with a heart.
he has an instagram highlight only with aesthetic and distracted photos of you; the name is something like ‘tear in my heart’ and that’s where he shows all his devotion and love for you.
he watched from the driver’s seat as you laughed at a joke he told; your head thrown back, the wind in your hair, sunlight on your beautiful skin. when you met his gaze with a lingering smile on your face, he sighed, “i really want to marry you,” he said passionately, “but only if you agree with that,” he added with a gentle smile.

just a sniffle!- hwang hyunjin
boyfriend! hyunjin x reader- one shot !
word count: 1.6k
genre: fluff, domestic scenario
synopsis: after your boyfriend comes home from a long day, you swear you can detect a scratch in his throat... but he insists he’s fine. fast forward 12 hours, and hyunjin is practically bed-ridden with fever. and now what...
warnings: sickness/a high fever (obviously), minor cursing
Tumblr media
a/n: this prompt was requested by an anon!! i hope i didn’t take too long to put this out- it takes me forever to edit when the fic in question is a request, because i just want it to be perfect :’) anyways, to my lovely anon: thank you for the request, and i hope you enjoy!
- - -
earlier, when hyunjin had told you he’d be able to get off early, you’d been over the moon- it was a rare occurrence, after all. your boyfriend has- as many idols do- an extremely hectic schedule, with practices often going late into the night. so when he’d said the two of you would be able to spend the evening together, it had taken all your self-control not to start cheering right then and there. but you had managed to stay calm- and still devise a thorough, detailed plan of how the night would go.
you would make dinner, and it would be ready by the time hyunjin got to your place- because who doesn’t love being welcomed by a warm meal? then, after you eat, hyunjin can run and get cleaned up while you do dishes. when that’s all done, the two of you can get down to business by binge watching all the drama episodes you’d missed. (you never watched them without him, even though you usually fall way behind in the show, due to his lack of free time. he insists that you shouldn’t wait- but you love to watch them with him, so you always let them pile up...)
now, in the moment, you scurry aimlessly about your apartment. dinner is ready, waiting to be served in the kitchen, so you walk around your front room. you know that everything is clean- this is the fourth time you’ve checked. but still, this isn’t an everyday thing, and you want the place to be tidy for your boyfriend. (you also know he doesn’t really care all that much- but it’s the thought that counts, right?)
your train of thoughts ends abruptly when a knock sounds from the front door. already smiling, you rush to answer it- and sure enough, there he is.
hyunjin stands in your front entryway, tilting his head as he looks at you. a smile toys at his lips, and he extends an arm. fighting your own glee, you lean into his embrace, breathing in his familiar scent.
“hey,” you say into his chest. he hums in reply, and you stand there for a moment, simply appreciating each other. after a beat has passed, you speak up again. “let’s go inside.”
the two of you enter, hyunjin closing the door behind him. he’s wearing a casual outfit, made up of just black sweats and a hat. you assume he’s already showered, too, because, well- you won’t lie- he usually doesn’t smell that great after a long practice. but he seems clean, and all for the better- that just means the schedule gets sped up, and more time for the two of you!
as he usually does, your boyfriend wanders into your bedroom to set down his things, not lingering. he meets you back in the kitchen as you begin to serve the food. you see him smile at the spread, and finally he speaks: “wow, babe. that’s a lot of food.”
at the sound of his voice, you start a bit. it’s much lower than usual, and you detect a bit of scratchiness in it. without looking up, you make your inquiry: “are you feeling well? you sound a bit froggy.”
hyunjin snorts at your description. “froggy? you really are something...”
you smile, bringing two servings of food to the table. as you begin to eat, the two of you settle into comfortable silence.
as the meal continues, though, you feel yourself begin to frown. despite his obvious attempts to hide it, hyunjin seems to be having trouble swallowing his food. with every bite, you see your boyfriend flinch just a bit.
not being able to take it any longer, you set your chopsticks down. “really, hyunjin-ah. you don’t seem well, are you getting a cold?”
your boyfriend makes a mocking pouty face at you. clearing his throat, he responds: “i’m fine, y/n. i really am, so don’t baby me.”
you give a half hearted glare. “fine. but if you wake up tomorrow feeling like shit, don’t say i didn’t warn you.”
- - -
you had been right, of course.
and, for the record, you had warned him.
it’s 6:48 in the morning, and both of you were awake. you lean over in bed, switching on the light. laying in a pathetic lump on your other side, hyunjin groans loudly. you turn back around to face him. “hyunjin-ah, seriously. let me feel your head, you’ve been coughing all night!”
the lump that happens to be your boyfriend shifts to face you in bed. you frown once you can seem him clearly- his face is red, and his eyes are watery from the coughing. you place your own cool palm on his forehead, and almost jerk back in surprise. “babe, you’re burning up!”
flinging your blankets away, you spring out of bed. “hyunjin!” you groan. “i knew you sounded off, why wouldn’t you say anything?”
he coughs again, finally managing to clear his throat. in his raspy voice, he manages: “i didn’t want to ruin your night. i knew you were excited.”
you sigh, knowing the feeling, and hating the understanding. hyunjin was overworked, truly. he shouldn’t have felt the need to lie just to spend time with you, no matter how excited you were...
“c’mon.” you say nudging him in the hips. “sit up, i’ll get you some painkillers and water. are you hungry?”
he grunts in response. when you don’t move, he finally mutters into his pillow: “i don’t know.”
a smile tugs at your lips at this. “that’s alright. i’ll get you a bit anyways.”
you know that hyunjin’s dramatics are probably a conductor to this situation, but a tiny part of you is excited at this opportunity to spoil him, even if it’s at his expense.
in the kitchen, you dig around for the promised medicine and some snacks, then pour a glass of water.
when you re enter your bedroom, you see hyunjin has managed to sit up. his tall figure is slumped as he leans against the headboard of your bed. nonetheless, he smiles as you enter the room. “you’re so pretty in the mornings,” he mumbles.
you gently smack his head as you set down the water glass. “oh, shut up. at least take the meds first so you’ll be able to defend yourself later on.”
at this, he chuckles- but the joy quickly dissipates as the laugh turns into a pained cough. you use your palm to rub circles over his back as he regains his breath. the fit passes, but the tension in the air doesn’t.
in perfect unison, the two of you sigh.
hyunjin breaks the silence. “i’m so sorry, y/n. i should have just told you i wasn’t feeling well last night... maybe we could have caught it before it got this bad.”
you give him a bittersweet smile. “your pride can be a weakness, my love.”
at this, hyunin puts his hand to his chest in fake shock. “i can’t believe you’d say such things to me. and while i’m ill!”
“it’s just a cold, your highness. take the tylenol and see how that helps.” you pause, knowing that he is probably in more pain than he’s letting on- you can tell because he was covering it with humor, something he rarely does. “do you- do you want a washcloth or something? an ice pack?”
your boyfriend’s expression is warm. his voice is still uneven, and he responds in an almost whisper: “is that alright?”
your heart stutters at his demeanor. “yes, that’s alright.”
when you return with the cold washcloth, hyunjin has slid down a bit- now only half sitting up. his eyes are closed, though you suspect he isn’t asleep, at least not fully. but you can tell he’s exhausted from being up all night with his sneezing and coughing... maybe he really is asleep...
you make your way to him, and pause to admire his peaceful face. he truly is beautiful... you reach over and gently sweep his long hair away from his forehead, allowing your fingers to linger. he’s still very warm to the touch, and you can’t help but worry for him. after a moment, you swap your hand for the washcloth, draping it gently across his already damp forehead.
you aren’t really sure how to properly care for a sick person, but a cold compress seems to be what all the dramas suggest. so you sit back down and hope for the best.
a few minutes pass- hyunjin breathing peacefully in the bed, and you in a nearby chair watching him. suddenly, your counterpart’s eyes flicker open, deep brown eyes meeting your own. “y/n-ah?” he rasps.
you almost launch out of your chair. “yes? are you alright?”
hyunjin gives a half-hearted snort as his eyes drift shut again. he continues to speak without seeing you. “i’m fine. but- will- do you mind sitting with me? over here?”
you stare at him for a moment, processing. then you smile. “yeah, i can do that. as long as you don’t get me sick.”
“no promises.”
and with that, you crawl back into bed with hyunjin, his back to you. you scoot up a bit, positioning yourself so you can hug him from behind. you’ve never been the big spoon before- but honestly? you love it, and you bury your face in between his shoulder blades, filled with an overwhelming rush of affection.
“y/n?” comes hyunjin’s voice again, very quietly.
you don’t move, answering into his back. “yes?”
“i love you.”
and with that, hyunjin slips back into sleep, this time nestled in your arms.

Can't Stop Staring At Those Ocean Eyes | Anidala Oneshot
(hey here's some Anidala fluff nobody asked for!!)
Can't Stop Staring At Those Ocean Eyes | Anidala Oneshot
Warnings: discussion of pregnancy, otherwise it's just fluff with some angst sprinkled in idk
(it's honestly just pillow talk-y fluff let's be real)
Tumblr media
She settles in his arms, a welcome respite from the cold night air drafting in through the window.
"Anakin...if we chose to have children, how many would you want?" She asks, tracing lazy patterns across his bare chest, absentmindedly tracing a fresh scar.
"I dunno,” He answers honestly. “I suppose I don't mind kids. Some of the younglings at the temple are nice enough...except that Grogu," he adds with a grumble. "I suppose I wouldn't mind one of my own. Why do you ask?"
"I still don't understand why you let yourself get harassed by toddlers," Padmé giggles.
"Don't laugh!" Anakin pouts. "Grogu and his...toddler clique stole my lightsaber earlier," he appends with a grimace.
Padmé, meanwhile, attempts to stifle her laughter. The mental image of Anakin being bullied by a bunch of toddlers was thoroughly entertaining.
"Okay...but seriously, why are you asking? Is everything okay?" Anakin asks, genuinely concerned.
She sighs, locking eyes with him. "Don't panic, but my cycle is late. Don't get excited though, it's probably nothing. It just...made me think, you know?" She says softly, letting her mind wander. She could almost see it now - a child that was a perfect mix of the both of them.
"Oh," is all he can say. How was he supposed to react? Padmé could be pregnant. “But it’s probably nothing, right?”
“Yes, I’m sure it’s fine,” she responds smoothly. "Don't let this...hang over your head. It's fine, I'm sure. You watch, I'll get it tommorow or something," she chuckles lightly.
"So...it's not for certain? We're okay, then?" He asks, unable to hide a bit of anxiousness in his voice.
"Mmm-hmm," she pauses, trying to think of something to change the subject. "Hey, are you going back to the Temple tomorrow or tonight?"
She can feel him relax a bit at the distraction. "Probably early tomorrow morning. I'll be gone by the time you wake up. We ship out for Cato Neimoidia tomorrow afternoon, and then after that, we're going to Anaxes. But I bet you I'll be back soon, I don't see either of these campaigns taking long."
"I sure hope," Padmé yawns. "I hate how often you're gone. It seems more than usual lately," she snuggles closer, holding him one last time. "I wish I didn't have to go to sleep,"
I know," he responds with a sigh. "I'll be back, I promise."
"Promise?" She asks.
"Yeah, I promise." He kisses the top of her head gently, wishing he could be there when she wakes.
Sadly, that was a luxury neither of them had.
"I could leave, you know," he blurts. "I would do anything you asked if it made you happy." he says, earnestly, grasping her hand.
"I...you don't mean that, Anakin. The Jedi need you. The clones need you. The Republic itself needs you! You can't leave,"
"But I would," he presses on. "I would. Say the word and I'll leave it all behind."
His deep blue eyes are boring into her soul; nearly asking her to say it.
"I..." she trails off. She knew that all she had to do was ask him to leave, to leave all of his responsibilities behind - and if she asked, he would leave it all behind in a heartbeat.
Something flickered in Anakin's eyes: he could feel her wavering resolve, but he remained silent.
It didn't matter, anyway; she couldn't bring herself to do it. It was selfish, and it wasn't how it was meant to be - at least for now, anyway.
..But was it really selfish to want a normal life?
Perhaps it wasn't. They had both known the repercussions; they knew what was going to happen if they pursued a relationship.
Resolutely, she decides she can't say it. It wasn't fair of her to ask him to abandon what he had worked most of his life for, even if he would just for her. "...I love you, Ani." she finally says.
He sighs contently, pulling her closer. "I love you too," he says without hesitation.
"Would you be..." He pauses, attempting to figure out how to word his question. "Would you be upset? If you weren't pregnant, I mean."
"I'd be more relieved if anything, but...it would be nice though, huh?" She murmurs quietly as she gently lets her fingertips trace a scar on his side. "A little version of you and me running around."
He laughs at that. "I don't think you'd want a mini-Anakin running around."
"Maybe not," She snorts. "But you know what I mean, right? A little baby...the perfect combo of you and I." her hand unthinkingly moves to her lower abdomen.
"Yeah, I know what you're saying," he says, wrapping an arm around her shoulder. "Sounds scary, if you ask me," he half-jokes.
"And so I've found the one thing the 'hero with no fear' is scared of," she teases.
"Oh, yeah?" He tickles her side in retaliation, making her squirm as she tries not to laugh.
"Anakin!" She manages to squeal, even as she finally gives in and attempts to wiggle away from him. He kisses the side of her head gently before letting her go.
"Okay, okay, I'll give you your space," he says with a grin. "I win."
She tilts her head. "Is that so?" before Anakin can react, she darts her hands out to his sides, attacking him with relentless tickles.
Anakin quickly realizes that she's fighting dirty, tickling him near his ribs and trying to keep him from retaliating, but to no avail. “Hey, no fair!”
"No fair?" She replies. "You started it!"
Anakin tries to bat Padmé’s hands away, but nearly falls off the bed while doing so.
She stops for a second, “Oh...whoops.” She mutters, before she realizes she's gotten the high ground in this situation. “Ha! Gotcha. I win."
"Okay, okay! You've made your point!" He says, laughing as he gets back on the bed.
They sit in comfortable silence for a minute, before finally, Padmé yawns once again, settling into his embrace as they wordlessly lie down. "I... I'll miss you, Ani." She breathes.
"You know I can't stay away for long, Padmé. And before you know it, this war will be over. I promise you." His hands trail through her hair, tracing soothing lines along her scalp.
She sighs, her eyes growing heavy. "And once it's over...we can be free then. We could go to Naboo," she says dreamily. "Maybe then, we could start a family."
"Yeah," Anakin agrees. "I like that,"
That night, Padmé goes to sleep dreaming of what could be. Maybe, she really was pregnant. Maybe, the war would be over soon and they could go back to Naboo.
She knew the perfect spot at the lake house for a baby's room.
In her mind's eye, she could see picnics, could see her and Anakin teaching their child to swim, could see a future that wasn't so full of war and chaos and stress.
Their relationship wasn't normal; it wasn't the typical relationship you'd see with normal couples who could freely be in love.
Perhaps someday, things would be different. Perhaps someday, they could get that happy ending on Naboo.
But for now, it was little moments like this that made it all the more worth it.

Diary of a Security Guard
For the always wonderful Rissy @rissynicole who I promised this to for being just...amazing.

Been watching Zim battle his PAK for a few (days) now. It has been SO mentally exhausting just to see, let alone experience. But that determination to get his PAK legs working. Imma be honest, it’s downright inspiring seeing him spaz, spark and struggle just to get back up n’ try it again once he catches his breath.
He even got Skoodge trying to activate his- few of the other smeets too, actually. I can’t tell whether he knows it or not (he’s pretty oblivious to the world around him so I doubt it), but he has a lot of fans among the youngins. They might find him annoying (cuz let’s be honest here, he is) but he has this unique…. charm(?) to him. Little bastard just doesn’t know when ta quit.
I can see the stress and strain of his struggles are starting to get to him though. He just hasn’t been himself lately. Physically Exhausted. Less destructive (again- lemme be honest- I AM ALL FOR but under normal circumstances). Hasn’t been doing much eating or sleeping. He’s just so fixated on this that it’s basically taken over his entire life. Can’t tell you how many times I have found him in the incubation room the past few shifts, tryin’ so damn hard to stand on his legs he basically passes out.
The smeets should be sleeping now. It’s pretty late and I see all the other guards settling into their seats relaxin’. Now’s the time to piss around, the break we all deserve. Alas, I can’t get that little shit outta my head. The pain on his face. The dedication and exhaustion in his eyes. It’s been burned into my organic brain ever since I had to stun him the first time. I don’t think I have ever been that scared before. I thought… I thought I could have killed him. That he wouldn’t be there the next morning. That this little ball of chaos would be erased from my life. And it was worse than anything I coulda imagined.
I wanna do something for him. I know I shouldn’t. ‘Specially after all the shit he puts me through. And I really shouldn’t play favoritisms but I dunno. There is just something about Zim.
Now, don’t get me wrong. He drives me crazy. He’s a little demon spawn. A selfish little piece of shit. More than once have I seen him sacrifice a playmate to make a quick escape or use poor Skoodge as a flesh shield. His bomb gifts haunt me very soul- I swear I hear them ticking in the walls relentlessly, taunting me. But he brings me such a calming ease. It’s so weird. Like… I wanna ring his neck sometimes but just having his little body in my arms brings me such warmth. His voice makes me want to slam my face against a wall but I honestly can’t fathom it not being there. I just want to be there for him. And do everything in my power to make him as happy as I can.
What did he do to me?
Ugh. I’m pulling my lekku out at my desk. Think, Zara. Think. There’s gotta be something I can do. I’m mindlessly fumbling through my clutter, still rackin’ my brain around what to do next. Suddenly, a sweet scent fills the air and I realize I opened my candy drawer.
Tumblr media
Hmmmm…. it’s not much but it’s the thought that counts.
I look over to Kira and tell her imma need to take 5. “Candy break?” She asks, watching me sneak a few pieces away. “Something like that” I reply.
Walking down the hallway to the smeetery felt like an eternity. What do I say? How will he respond? Lord, what if he wakes the other smeets and I gotta clear out my whole snack stash to not upset the others? What if he cries? If his PAK spazes out again, what if I have to shock him again? What if I fail my mission? What will the control brains do to me? what if… what if I have to kill him? How would I live with myself if I...hurt my smeet? Shit. I gotta stop doing that. He’s not MY smeet. He belongs to Irk. I’m just a guardian, nothing more. But… I never want him to leave my side. But he also has a job to do! For Irk! I hope he never becomes an invader. Keep him here, where it’s safe. Maybe the science division or something… hmmmmm.”
“Uhhh…” I hear next to me, a random voice sounding concerned. It breaks my concentration and I see another guard, head slightly tilted, staring at me. “You good, man?”
Oh! Seems I have been standing at the door for some time. I laughed. “Yeah. Sorry. Just got a lot on my mind.”
“It’s cool” she smiled “just don’t let the higher ups catch you wandering around aimlessly.”
“I appreciate it. Thanks!” I said waving as she went about her way. “Higher ups?” Yeah. Not a whole lot of fear there. Nothing can be worse than what we’ve already experienced.
The door opened, inviting me to the darkness of the smeetery. Was it always so cold in here? The only light shines from a few wires and screens on the walls but other than that, it’s pretty pitch black. A totally different feel to the liveliness of the early shift when spirits are high and bodies are active. Luckily, our vision is enhanced in our tubes, far before we go online so nighttime is never an issue for us.
I creep over to the nesting area, where all the little bodies are snoozing (or snoring in Skoodge’s case) and see those ruby eyes staring at the ceiling. I notice his antenna perk and he looks my direction, instantly making a face of aggression.
“What?”
That the hell kinda greeting is that? Little rude shit. I wanna smack him outside his little skull but I take a deep breath and calmly whisper. “Ain’t you supposed to be asleep?”
“That’s none of your business.”
“I’m your guard. It IS my business. Why ain’t you asleep?”
“I’m not tired.”
“Something bothering you?”
“No.”
I can see it written all over his face in glow in the dark paint. “Ah-ha. You really are a bad liar. Is it cuz your legs?”
“NO.” He turned to face away from me.
“Hey. Listen: you’re going to get it. I know you will.”
“But how come Tak could so easily? All mine do is attack me.”
“Just because she got it faster than you, that doesn’t make her better than you.”
“Zim never claimed it did.”
He’s hurt. His words and his feelings are battling against each other. Tak being able to activate her PAK legs without any difficulties was eating him alive but he would never admit it.
“Listen… Zim. It’s going to get easier. You just gotta keep at it. Small steps get you far in life.”
He shrugged, sitting up, curling into himself. “Zim wonders about that sometimes. Maybe… he isn’t meant to get it.”
There it is. “Of course you are.” I said, gently putting a hand on his shoulder. “I believe in you. You are going to find a way. You never give up. I don’t think you know how.”
He looked my way, eyes wide and glassy. SHIT. Imma make him cry!? I didn’t mean to!
“You… you do?”
Huh?
“Of course I believe in you, dummy. And I will be here every step of the way. I got you.” I said, grazing my thumb across his cheek. A smile took the place of that awful frown and his eyes lit. “Here. I got you a little something, but only if you try to get some sleep. You got a long day of training with your PAK and you need all the rest you can get. Oh, and don’t let anyone know I did this.” I said putting my finger to my lips.
Tumblr media
I reached into a belt pocket and grabbed a wrapped hard candy. With two fingers I held it in front of him, he looked at it inquisitively. His grubby little hands reached for it and I let him grab it. He stared at it, slowly unwrapping it and Then glanced back at me. I guess he didn’t trust it.
“It’s not drugged or nuthin’. Just some sweets.”
Again, he stared at me.
“What?”
“Your accent is really weird.”
“Just eat the damn candy and shut up” I said, pushing the sweet into his mouth. He just huffed but suckled on.
“Now DON'T cause anymore problems and get some shut eye. I will see you bright n’ early.”
Tumblr media
He just puffed his cheeks and rolled over. Think I handled that well. And maybe, hopefully tomorrow will be a better day for him.
Smiled and waved on my way out. Dunno if he saw me but it doesn’t hurt. Walked into the hallway, into dread. Leaned against the wall and slid down.
Us E.L.I.T.E.S can’t disobey orders from the Control brains but… I pray with everything I have in me that things stay like this forever. Cuz’ if i ever had my mission changed or if I had to hurt him… idunno what I would do.

Tumblr media
word count: 20.7k
summary:  Rory is just trying to find her place in Denver after landing her dream job after university. As she slowly finds friends and starts to feel comfortable with the choices she made, she meets none other than Nathan Mackinnon. They hit it off fast, but not everything turns out like a dream.
author’s note: This was written as part of @hockeynetwork‘s winter fic exchange for @broadstbroskis! I’m sorry this took so long, but I really do hope it’s worth the wait <3 A lot of love went into this, and I’d also love to thank @antoineroussel for listening to me yell about this fic for far too long.

“Never leave a friend behind. Friends are all we have to get us through this life - and they are the only things from this world that we could hope to see in the next.” ― Dean Koontz
Rory feels extremely lucky that she managed to find a job in her field before graduation has rolled around, even if it’s cutting things a little bit close. She knows how hard it is, especially seeing her friends struggle with it all. Even knowing how lucky she is, a huge part of her is anxious about having to move to a completely different state than all of the people she’s gotten close to during university. There’s something terrifying about starting over in a place you know nothing about.
At least the things she’s heard about Denver are almost all good. Besides, it’s not like she’s moving to the other side of the country, but Rory still feels overwhelmed at all of the things she has to prepare for. In the moments that it all starts to become too much, she wonders if she made the right choice.
“I think it’s a little too late to back out,” Piper laughs. “You already have everything set up and ready to go. Besides, you got that LiDAR job you were freaking out so much about. I refuse to let you drop out of it now.”
Rory sighs. “I know, it’s just scary. Like… what if I hate my coworkers? I’m depending on the fact that we become friends because how else am I supposed to make friends?”
“You’re pretty likeable, I don’t think you have anything to worry about,” Piper replies, smiling brightly. “But if they end up being shitty, I’ll fly down here with the girls and fight them for you.”
“I appreciate it,” Rory says softly, smiling a little.
“Of course, it’s the least we could do. Now, do you want to go over your list again?” Piper inquires. “Or do you feel confident about it now?”
“You’ve told me I’ve had everything the last three times, I don’t think it’s possible for me to be missing everything,” Rory sighs.
“There we go, that’s the spirit!” Piper teases.
Rory rolls her eyes. “Maybe it is a good thing I’m moving to another state.”
“Whatever you say,” Piper replies, smiling. “Now, do you wanna have movie night with the girls?”
Rory smiles, nodding, knowing that this is probably the last time everyone will be able to hang out before finals and everyone going their own ways. It’s a terrifying thought knowing that they won’t be seeing each other again come September, but she knows that everyone is going to be doing amazing things. Besides, they’d all still be friends, things would just be looking a little bit different.
The last few weeks roll by in a state of panic Rory hasn’t felt in a long time. All of her friends were panicked by finals, but also saddened by the fact that this would be the last time everyone would be doing this together. When the day comes for Rory to pack up everything in the back of her SUV, everything feels a bit surreal.
“I’m scared,” Rory whispers to Piper as she puts the last box in the trunk.
“I think we all are,” Piper replies, smiling sadly. “This feels like we’re all being thrown into proper adulthood again with no better idea of what to do.”
Rory snorts. “Yeah, it really does. I just… nothing is gonna be the same, is it?”
“No, but don’t think you’re gonna get rid of me that easily. We didn’t go through all of this for nothing,” Piper reassures. “I know I can’t just waltz over when someone breaks your heart, but I’m still just a phone call away.”
“And you better call before making any impulsive decisions,” Rory teased.
“But they won’t be impulsive if I tell you first,” Piper groans.
Rory laughs. “Yeah, that’s kind of the point.”
“You’ll do great, Rory. Don’t let them intimidate you too much down there.”
“I’ll do my best.”
They hug tightly one last time before Rory gets in the car and starts the long drive to Denver. It feels weird not making the usual drive back to her parents house, and it takes everything in her to not just turn right around. She turns up the music, and focuses on just trying to get to the first motel of the drive. There’s something lonely about not making the long drive with anyone else, especially being so used to just driving with her friends.
Over the next week, Rory makes the drive to Denver, making stops at different state parks to take in the view. Before she knows it, she’s rolled up to her new apartment complex. Everything starts to feel a bit more real as she realizes that this is where she’ll be living for quite some time. Taking a deep breath, she prepares herself for the long process of getting signed into her new place.
By the end of the day, Rory feels exhausted, even though she’s barely managed to unpack everything she brought. None of it is even organized yet, but it’s good enough for a first day. As she gets ready for bed, she groans, remembering that she still needs to get a bed, meaning that she’ll be sleeping on an air mattress until that happens.
“Ugh, this is what I get,” Rory mutters as she sets up her sleeping situation. “At least I don’t start work for a few days. That’s an upside, right?”
A few moments later, her phone is ringing, and it’s none other than Piper, probably checking in to make sure that she made it safely to the apartment.
“Oh good, you’re not dead,” Piper says, obviously smiling.
Rory rolls her eyes. “No, I’m not dead, but I just remembered that I’m gonna have to sleep on an air mattress until I get a proper bed.”
“See, I told you that you should just tie one to the top of your car!” Piper exclaims.
“It would have gotten wet from sitting outside overnight though. Nobody wants a wet mattress.”
“But I bet it sounds better than an air mattress.”
“Yeah, I don’t really know about that,” Rory replies, laughing. “I guess that should be my first priority tomorrow. Honestly, I can’t believe I didn’t sort this out before I left.”
“You had other things to worry about, like making sure you didn’t fail your geology final,” Piper jokes.
“I suppose you’re not wrong,” Rory sighs dramatically.”
“Of course I’m not. Now, where are my pictures? Send me pictures,” Piper demands.
Thankfully, the rest of the conversation helps ease Rory’s nerves, and she falls asleep quickly that night. When she wakes up in the morning, she groans as she stretches a bit. She decides that trying to find something more comfortable to sleep on is her mission for the day.
The next few days pass rather quickly as Rory does her best to get herself organized and situated before starting work. As her first day approaches, she feels nervous, still unsure of what to make of everything. But she’s also excited for it, knowing that she’s been waiting for this moment ever since she decided to become a geology major.
When her first day rolls around, she can feel the nerves thrumming through her, and she ends up at the office almost an hour early. It doesn’t seem like anybody else is there yet, so she waits in the parking lot until somebody taps on her window. She startles, but calms down when Rory realizes that it’s Shea, the guy who interviewed her.
“It’s good to meet you in person, Rory,” Shea greets as Rory gets out of the car. “Got here a little bit early, I’m guessing?”
“Yeah, you would be correct,” she replies, smiling a little. “I just wasn’t sure what to expect with traffic and I was nervous, so…”
“Happens to all of us. We’re the first ones here, so I’ll give you a quick tour before everyone else gets here,” Shea replies.
The office is fairly small, but that’s not surprising considering a lot of the work is done on various field sites. Rory perks up a little when Shea shows that she’ll have her own little corner of the office; she’d assumed she’d have to share space with someone else.
“We just like to make sure everyone feels like they have their own space here. It just makes everyone feel a bit more comfortable, you know?” Shea explains when Rory brings it up. “Besides, it’s not like there’s that many of us to take up space.”
“Oh, I guess that makes sense,” she replies.
Over the next few weeks, Rory feels a bit in over her head, but slowly starts to settle in. Her coworkers are welcoming, some inviting her to hang out outside of work as well. It’s more than she expected before moving to Denver, but she’s grateful for the warm welcome. There’s still days where she feels overwhelmed and misses seeing her friends every day, but she manages her best.
It’s a little over a month later when Shea invites her to go to the bar with a few other people from the office. Apparently it’s somewhat of a tradition with the group, and Rory feels delighted at being included.
“Of course you’re invited,” Shea says when Rory brings it up. “We just didn’t want to scare you off with being too much.”
Rory laughs a little. “I don’t think you guys can get any louder than my friends from university.”
“Well, I think we can take that as a challenge,” Ashton retorts. “Things can get a little bit wild over here.”
“Don’t listen to them, they’re just kidding,” Blair says, trying to hide her smile. “We mostly just hang out and grab a few drinks since most of us are past our partying days.”
The casual banter continues as they walk the few blocks to the bar that they frequent. Rory isn’t quite sure what she was expecting, but it seems like a relatively laid back place, at least in comparison to what she’s used to. At first, she feels a little bit out of place, unsure of where she stands with everyone in this new setting, but after a couple of drinks, she starts to settle in.
By the time she’s heading back to her apartment, Rory realizes that it’s been a long time since she’s laughed so much. There’s a small part of her that feels like she’s betraying her university friends, but she knows that’s ridiculous. Still, the feeling tugs at her, so she gives in and decides to call Piper, knowing that her friend will pick up.
“Hey, babe, I wasn’t expecting to hear from you,” Piper greets. “Is something up?”
“No, just missed you,” Rory whispers as she flops onto her bed. “Went out with some of my coworkers tonight and it felt weird. They were nice, but it’s just so different.”
“Oh, that sounds nice,” Piper replies, obviously smiling. “I’m glad you found new drinking buddies.”
“Nah, it wasn’t like that,” Rory says. “We mostly just talked, you know? But made me miss everyone.”
“Do you wanna talk about it?” Piper inquires, a little bit concerned. “Or is it like a ‘just kind of missing everyone’ type of thing?”
“I guess I just realized how different everything is going to be now,” Rory says softly.
“Well, that’s not a bad thing. Besides, you know I would come kick your ass before I let you forget about me. You know that, right?”
“Of course I do, Piper, you know I wouldn’t forget you.”
“That’s good then. Now, tell me about who you went to the bar with. I want to know everything.”
Rory smiles softly before talking about her night. She’s not sure how long they spend on the phone together, but when she falls asleep, she feels calmer than she has in a long time.
~ ~ ~
A few years down the line, and Rory has truly settled into Denver. She can’t imagine herself living anywhere else, and she’s grown to love her job and coworkers far more than she ever expected. There’s moments where it all feels a bit surreal that Rory was ever scared of moving, but now that she has great friends and a routine, it feels like this is what was meant to happen.
It’s another Friday night when she and the usual group are getting ready to head to the bar, albeit a bit later than normal. They all got swept up in a large project with a close deadline, and while going straight to bed sounds tempting, they’re more tempted by the new menu the bar rolled out earlier this week.
“I can’t believe I could be in bed, but instead I’m staying up to get bar food,” Ashton groans. “How the hell is this my life now?”
“I mean, it’s not too late to head back,” Rory teases. “We can always tell you about it on Monday.”
“That’s… that’s even worse,” Ashton complains. “This better be worth it.”
“Okay, but when has their food ever disappointed us?” Blair points out.
“Exactly!” Shea exclaims. “Besides, we can just stay for food and then leave.”
“I guess,” Ashton sighs.
When they get to the bar, they grab their normal table as Shea goes up to order. Considering it’s a Friday night, there aren’t too many people here, which is a big reason why they keep coming back. However, when Shea comes back with their food, a loud group comes walking in, earning them a couple of glares.
“Wait a minute,” Shea whispers, squinting at the group as he sets down the food. “I recognize them.”
Rory looks at him, confused. “Are they like… friends of yours that we don’t know about? I thought we were your only friends.”
“Oh my god,” Shea says, trying to hold back laughter. “No, they definitely play for the Avs. They are definitely professional athletes.”
“Well, what the fuck are they doing here then?” Ashton inquires as they grab some fries. “As much as I love it here, it’s kind of dingy.”
Shea shrugs. “Hell if I have a clue.”
They ignore the group for most of the night since they’re on opposite sides of the bar and never quite intersect. However, when Rory goes to get another drink, she sees her friends trying to not laugh as she makes her way back. She gives them a confused look, unsure if she did something weird.
“What did I miss?” Rory asks, concerned.
“Nothing, just seems like someone is checking you out,” Blair answers, smiling and glancing over to the Avs players.
Rory snorts. “That’s a good one.”
“No, we’re being serious, I promise,” Ashton says, smirking. “You’re getting us drinks next just to make sure.”
“No, I don’t think I will,” Rory replies, squinting. “Besides, I think you’re wrong.”
“Well, there’s no way to prove it if you don’t go back,” Ashton teases. “Don’t you want to know if a professional hockey player is checking you out.”
“I really think I’m good,” Rory sighs.
“Weren’t you just complaining to us about your lack of dating life? This is a great chance to turn things around,” Shea says, smiling widely.
“I really hate all of you and I have no clue why we’re friends,” Rory groans.
“Look, it’s worth a shot, isn’t it?” Blair inquires.
“Why do you say that like I’m going to go talk to them?” Rory whispers intently. “Because I’m not going to.”
Ashton rolls their eyes. “Fine, I guess. But it’s your loss. I was thinking you could at least badger him into buying our drinks or something.”
“Please, as if we don’t already get a discount for coming here all the fucking time,” Rory laughs. “Besides, I don’t think that a professional hockey player would want to date someone who’s idea of a Friday night is to go try new bar food.”
“You say that like this is a bad thing,” Blair jokes. “But we won’t push it if you really don’t want us to.”
“Look, maybe he checked me out, but that means nothing,” Rory says. “It just makes me feel kind of weird, I guess.”
“We’ll leave it alone then,” Shea replies firmly.
They spend the rest of the night joking around, and start to head out. As Rory is grabbing her purse, ready to catch up with her friends who are already at the door, she hears a faint hello. She turns around and sees one of the Avs players, presumably the one her friends said was checking her out.
“Oh, uh, hi,” Rory says awkwardly. “Did… did you need something?”
The guy blushes a little, which Rory admits is a little cute. “I just wanted to say hi and uh… maybe ask for your number?”
“I, uh,” Rory replies, taken off guard. “Going straight for it, huh? Not even going to ask my name?”
“Shit, that was… that was way too forward, wasn’t it?” the guy says, awkwardly laughing.
Rory smiles a little bit. “Yeah, just a little bit. I’m Rory, by the way. And what’s your name?”
“I’m Nate,” the guy replies, looking a little bit confused.
“It’s nice to meet you Nate. And as much as I would love to give you my number, I also don’t know anything about you,” Rory replies.
“So that’s… that’s a no?” he asks, looking a little defeated.
“My friends and I come here every Friday night. If you’re not busy next week, swing by with a couple of your friends,” Rory answers, giving him a small smile.
“Ah, you want to see if I pass the friend check first?” Nate inquires, smiling crookedly.
Rory nods. “See you around then?”
“I - yeah, of course,” Nate says faintly as Rory walks off.
She can feel herself internally screaming, unsure if what she did was smart or not. Even if Nate is a professional athlete, she still doesn’t know him, and giving her number to strangers doesn’t feel quite right. When she meets up with her friends outside, they’re all giving her inquisitive looks.
“So, did loverboy come over and talk to you?” Ashton inquires.
Rory blushes. “Yeah, he asked for my number, and I, uh, I didn’t give it to him? I just told him to meet us here next week if he was really interested.”
“Holy shit, that’s bold,” Shea says, smiling. “But like… not in a bad way. It’s probably for the best, if I’m being honest.”
“Making him work for it, I like it,” Blair comments, smiling.
Rory sighs loudly. “I’m not making him work for it, it’s just that I don’t like giving my number to people I don’t know.”
“Whatever you say,” Blair says, rolling her eyes a little bit. “Let’s just hope he shows up next week then.”
Throughout the next week, they find any chance to tease Rory about the upcoming Friday night. Not that any of this really surprised her, though, especially knowing that they’ve been there for all of her complaining about being single. They want this to be something good just as much as she does. When the day finally rolls around, they all keep giving her smirks, knowing what’s about to happen.
“You know, he might not even show up,” Rory points out as they pack up their things.
Ashton snorts. “Something tells me that he will.”
“If Ashton says so, then it must be true,” Shea says, smiling widely. “Hopefully he doesn’t keep us waiting too long.”
“You guys are the worst,” Rory mutters.
Everyone laughs as they start the familiar walk towards the bar. As much as she doesn’t want to admit it, Rory feels nervous. There’s a big part of her that feels like the previous week wasn’t even real, especially considering what a big shot Nate is in Denver. If he doesn’t show up, she tries to reason that it was a fluke and she has nothing to be hurt over. However, there’s also a small part of her that hopes it means something.
“So, like… did you even sort any details out with him besides coming here tonight?” Blair inquires, curious.
“Just decided to hope for the best,” Rory replies, shrugging. “Didn’t think it would be a big deal or anything.”
“Of course you wouldn’t,” Shea snickers. “And would you look at that - looks like he brought backup too.”
“Dear god,” Rory murmurs as she looks over at the entrance.
Nate looks around confused for a few moments before he spots Rory. He smiles brightly when he spots her, making Rory blush and sink down in her seat. Even though she knows that she’s the one who set this up, she still feels weird about it, unsure of what to really expect of tonight. Thankfully, her friends don’t say anything as he makes his way over.
“Good to see you didn’t bail out,” Nate says once he gets up to the table. “Mind if we grab a seat?”
“Might be more convenient than standing,” Rory jokes.
“I - okay, you have a point,” Nate says as his friends try to hold back their laughter.
“So, who are your friends?” Rory asks as they grab a seat.
“Oh, this is Gabe and Tyson,” Nate answers. “And… you all are?”
“These are my coworkers and, unfortunately, also my best friends,” Rory explains. “This is Shea, Ashton, and Blair.”
“Nice to meet all of you,” Nate says awkwardly.
There’s a few moments of silence where nobody quite knows what to say. To be honest, Rory didn’t actually plan for this because she wasn’t sure if Nate would actually show up tonight. She’s not quite sure how to break the silence, unsure of what to talk about.
“So, what do all of you do for work?” Gabe inquires, obviously looking for anything to talk about.
Things get a little bit easier after that, as they explain the work they do with LiDAR. They end up using the same explanation they use when schools tour their office - just a simple way to explore what’s underground using light. Rory gets the sense that a chunk of it is going over Nate and his friends’ heads, but they genuinely look interested in what’s happening. Something about that makes her feel a little bit more at ease, even if they aren’t totally getting it, they’re at least trying.
“And I mean, we’re a pretty ragtag group since this is kind of a weird field to end up in. So I guess it makes sense that we all just kind of clicked,” Shea explains.
“That must be nice,” Nate says, smiling softly.
“So, what do you do?” Ashton inquires, trying their hardest to not smile.
Rory rolls her eyes, knowing that Ashton is just trying to get them to talk a bit more.
“Oh, uh, we all play hockey for the Avalanche,” Nate answers, obviously taken a little bit off guard.
“Care to tell the class about what that means?” Blair asks. “Like… what’s that even like?”
Nate seems to loosen up a little as he gets to talk about something he’s obviously comfortable with. The rest of the night seems to pass quickly, and before Rory knows it, everyone starts heading out for the evening. Before she gets up from the table, though, she notices Nate giving her a questioning look.
“We’ll wait for you outside,” Shea says as he looks between the two of them. “If you’re not out in five minutes, I’ll come back inside, though.”
Rory nods and turns back to Nate. “Seems like you passed the friend check.”
“Oh, well, that’s good,” he replies, laughing nervously. “Does that mean I can get your number?”
“I suppose so,” Rory replies, trying to not laugh.
After exchanging numbers, they head out, and Rory’s friends are obviously interested in what happened. She rolls her eyes, knowing that they’re too nosy for their own good.
“We just exchanged numbers, that’s it,” Rory says. “Literally nothing else happened.”
“Like… no future dates planned?” Blair inquires, teasing.
“No,” Rory says. “I still barely know him.”
“But like… is that not the point of a date?” Shea replies, smiling.
“You’re all the worst, I can’t believe we’re friends,” Rory groans.
Ashton smiles widely. “Please, we’re the best. Who else would sit through an unofficial first date?”
“That’s not what this was!” Rory exclaims, blushing. “I don’t need you to chaperone me.”
“Sure, but we did it anyways,” Ashton snickers.
Rory rolls her eyes, but lets it drop. “Well, at least you’ll be the first to know if anything actually does happen.”
“We better be,” Blair laughs. “Anyways, I’ll see you all on Monday. Make sure to get some sleep because we all know how busy things are going to be next week.”
“Ugh, I don’t even want to think about it,” Ashton groans.
The group laughs as they all head their separate ways. When Rory gets back to her apartment, she knows she has to tell Piper, knowing that her friend is going to want to know everything. Piper has been there for everything, and if anyone would know what to do next, it would be her.
“Rory, what’s got you calling me so late?” Piper asks, teasing a little.
“So, uh, do you remember me telling you about the guy last week? I finally got his number,” Rory says. “And, uh, I’m only freaking out a little bit.”
Piper snorts. “Well, that’s a good start at least. Have you texted him at all yet?”
“Uh, no?” Rory replies. “What would I even say?”
“Maybe ask if he had a good night or whatever,” Piper says, obviously trying to not laugh.
“I- fuck, you’re probably right,” Rory mutters.
“But honestly, you don’t need to make it a thing right away. And that’s probably the right way to go, you know?”
“So… just be friends? I feel like he wanted my number for a date.”
“Sure, but also as your best friend, I know you don’t like dating people you don’t really know either. If it’s a big deal, then it’s whatever.”
“That’s easy for you to say, Piper.”
“Maybe, but there’s no harm in taking things slow. Besides, you said he was a professional athlete, right? The dude could pick anyone to hang out with on a Friday night and he picked you. I really think you’re fine.”
“I really hate when you’re the voice of reason,” Rory groans.
Rory laughs. “It has to happen sometimes. But seriously, I would stress about it, and just play it casual. There’s no reason to force yourself to do something you’re not ready to do.”
“I want to be ready, though,” Rory whispers. “I’ve been complaining about this ever since I moved to Denver.”
“Whatever happens, it’ll all be okay. Just keep me in the loop, okay?” Piper says. “Now go drink some water and go to bed.”
“Thank you Piper,” Rory says softly. “I miss you.”
“I miss you, too. I’ll talk to you soon,” Piper replies before hanging up.
Rory sighs, but does what Piper said. After chugging down a glass of water, she sends a quick text to Nate asking what he thought of the night before promptly deciding to pass out. She’s not even sure if he’s still awake, but it’s better to just get it over with.
When she wakes up, Rory immediately checks her phone, but doesn’t see a reply. She shrugs it off, assuming he’s still asleep. As the day goes on, she gets more nervous at the lack of reply, but tries to not think anything of it. Professional athletes have weird schedules, so she blames it on that. Turns out, she’s right when he replies later that afternoon.
Hey, sorry for not replying earlier, I barely made it to practice on time :(
No!!! Don’t worry about it, I can’t imagine having to go to work right now lmao
I had a great time though!! I really liked your friends and I’m glad I got to meet them
I’ll be sure to tell them, hopefully their ego doesn’t get to big
Fingers crossed lmao
Would you maybe want to hang out again sometime? Or I can invite you to a game or something
…is now the time to be honest that I don’t know that much about hockey
Is that why you didn’t know who I was that first night?
Yeah it would be 😅
Rip looks like I lost that bet. But it wouldn’t be a deal breaker! Just have to have you come to a game so you can learn :)
I’m sold then 👀 Can’t wait to be confused the whole time skfjsdf
Would any of your coworkers want to come? We actually have a game Friday night, and I’m guessing that you’re all usually free then
I’ll have to check to see if they won’t be too mad at messing up our bar ritual. I’m sure they’ll agree though!
Let me know asap so I can get you tickets
omg no don’t worry about that, we can get our own tickets
I can get you all good tickets though :)
…fine
:)
Rory rolls her eyes, but she smiles a little bit. She’s excited that Nate is including her friends in plans like this because they’re important to her. And she also wants to make sure that they like anyone she’s interested in as well. Before she forgets, Rory sends a text to the group chat asking if they’d be up for the game the following week.
By the end of the day, they all agreed, and she lets Nate know immediately. He sends a smiley face back, and says that their tickets will be at the front office. Despite knowing that she won’t see him at all that day, she still feels nervous. There’s something about it that feels like he’s letting her into a part of his life, even though it’s such a public position of his.
Before she forgets, she lets Piper know, who promptly screams about how excited she is. Knowing that one of her best friends seems to approve of him - even in a vague way - helps reassure Rory just a little bit more.
Despite the large workload, the week passes by quickly, and before Rory knows it, it’s Friday night, and she’s headed to Pepsi Center. She feels nervous, and it doesn’t help that her friends have been teasing her all week. Even though she knows she won’t be seeing Nate after the game, she still feels the need to impress him somehow.
“Come on, the dude gave you fucking tickets to watch him play. I think he wants to impress you,” Shea points out as they grab their seats.
“I’m not so sure about that,” Rory mumbles. “I feel like he doesn’t need to do much.”
“I mean, you were the one who turned him down the first time,” Blair replies, smirking.
“Yeah, I’m sure he doesn’t get that often,” Ashton says. “Like, the dude probably hasn’t heard ‘no’ for a while.”
“Have I told you that you’re all the worst?” Rory jokes. “But seriously, this feels like a lot when we still barely know each other.”
“Okay, but also consider that he has money. Like this was probably nothing for him,” Ashton says.
“You know, this really isn’t making anything better,” Rory groans. “It’s just making me even more anxious.”
Blair tugs her into a side hug. “Look, I’m sure he just wants to show off a little bit. And he also probably gets some allotted tickets or something. Just don’t sweat it too much.”
“But if he’s willing to give us more tickets…” Shea jokes.
“We’ve officially hung out once, you guys,” Rory groans. “I don’t even know if I can consider him a friend.”
“Whatever you say,” Shea replies, trying to not smile.
Thankfully, they all move onto lighter subjects after, and get lost in conversation until the game starts. Rory had asked Nate some questions about the game throughout the week, but she’s still lost as she gets lost in the action. Sure, she understands the basics of it, but there’s moments where she’s not quite sure what just happened.
Towards the end of the second period, Nate scores a goal and Rory cheers loudly. It’s almost over as quick as it started, but he points over to where she’s sitting, making her blush and sink down into her seat. Her friends don’t even try to hide their laughter at the whole situation.
“Maybe he just always points over here,” Rory mumbles.
“Something tells me that he doesn’t,” Blair replies, still laughing.
Rory rolls her eyes before turning her focus back onto the game. Thankfully, the rest of the game passes without incident, and the Avs end up winning. She sends Nate a quick congratulatory text, as well as saying that she really enjoyed the game. He doesn’t respond, which she figured would be the case, so she tucks her phone back into her pocket.
“Are you sure you’re not meeting up with him after?” Ashton inquires. “We won’t tease you too much about ditching us for him.”
“Yeah, he said he’s usually pretty tired after evening games and isn’t much for conversation,” Rory replies. “Not that I can really blame him.”
“That’s a shame,” Shea sighs. “I was really hoping we’d have something fun to bet on.”
“You wouldn’t dare bet on that,” Rory accuses, squinting a little.
“Oh, he most definitely would. It’s a normal thing, unfortunately,” Blair replies. “But that’s understandable. Hopefully you can catch him some other time.”
Rory shrugs. “I’m sure we will.”
When Rory gets home, she checks her phone and sees that Nate sent a smiley face and a simple call me? She hesitates for a moment, before deciding to hit the call button.
“Hey,” Nate greets after a few moments. “I’m really glad you came tonight.”
“Yeah, I had an amazing time. It was a lot more fun than I was expecting,” Rory replies.
“I’m really sorry that we couldn’t hang out for longer, but I wouldn’t want to fall asleep on you,” Nate explains. “But if you’re free this weekend, maybe we can get lunch or something.”
“I - yeah, that would be really nice, actually. Do you have a preference for which day?”
“Uh, I guess Sunday would work. I can text you a time and place.”
“That would be really nice,” Rory says softly. “I’ll see you then.”
They sit on the phone for a couple seconds in silence, neither quite sure what to say. Rory doesn’t want the call to end, but she doesn’t want to keep Nate up too long.
“Can I ask why you didn’t give me your number that first night? I know you said you wanted me to pass the friend check but…” Nate inquires, hesitant.
“I mean, I didn’t really know who you were. I just felt kind of weird giving my number to some strange guy I briefly talked to at the bar,” Rory answers.
“Oh, I… yeah, that makes sense,” Nate says. “And Sunday, would it be a date? Or just friends?”
Rory pauses for a moment to think. She wants it to be a date, but she also knows that it would give Nate the wrong idea. As much as she wants to have a partner, she also knows that she just needs a little more time to be sure of herself and her emotions.
“Just friends, if that’s okay,” Rory whispers. “If that’s not what you were hoping for, I’m sorry. It’s just… I want to be friends first before anything else.”
“Of course that’s okay,” Nate replies. “Doesn’t change a thing.”
Rory frowns a little. “If you’re sure.”
“I’m very sure. I wouldn’t say it otherwise.”
“I - okay then,” Rory replies. “I should let you go to bed.”
“See you Sunday then,” Nate says, smiling, before hanging up.
Much to Rory’s surprise, Sunday went well. Things weren’t weird, something she was fully expecting to happen, but lunch passed by quickly. They ended up making tentative plans to hang out again soon, with Nate making it very clear there were no expectations attached. Knowing that, Rory started to feel more and more comfortable around him.

“I don’t know what to say to you except that it tore the heart out of my body saying goodbye to you.” — Vita Sackville-West
To be honest, Rory never really expected to become such good friends with Nate, as well as some of his friends by extension. Over the last several months, they’ve gotten close, but never spoke of a possibility of furthering their relationship. As much as she wants to bring it up, Rory also is perfectly content with keeping things the way they are.
However, there’s moments when she wonders if she should say something. Sometimes, she’ll see Nate giving her a look or a certain smile that just makes her think. And he was very adamant in the beginning that if they were to ever date, it would be at her pace. So maybe he’s waiting for her to say something, but Rory doesn’t have the heart to ruin a perfectly good friendship.
“You know, I really feel like he feels the same way. I don’t see the harm in doing something about it,” Blair says one Friday night. “I mean, you have the dude wrapped around your finger.”
“I just want to be sure,” Rory says firmly.
“You know what would make you completely sure? Asking him out,” Ashton replies. “Like, you’re in a perfect spot right now.”
“And I really doubt he would be mean about it either,” Shea points out. “Plus, you’ve been saying how you wanted to be friends first before doing anything. And now what are you?”
“Ugh,” Rory groans. “Just give me some time, okay? I’ll do it when I’m ready.”
Blair frowns. “If you say so.”
“I do say so,” Rory replies. “Besides, if I fuck this up, we won’t get anymore free hockey tickets. Then what?”
“Then we don’t go to hockey games. Like, we’re going because they’re fun, but most importantly because Nate has become someone important to you,” Ashton answers.
“I promise I’ll say something when I’m ready,” Rory whispers. “Just drop it, please.”
“Okay,” Shea says, obviously unsure. “We’ll have your back no matter what you decide.”
“Thank you,” Rory replies. “Now, what’s everyone’s plans for Valentine’s day this year? Because Nate invited us to a game if nobody has anything going on.”
“You want us to drop the subject but then you immediately tell us that Nate invited us to a Valentine’s day game?” Ashton exclaims.
“I - you know what, shut up,” Rory groans. “He’s friends with all of us, okay?”
“Mhm, I’m sure of that,” Shea mutters.
“Maybe I’ll just take the tickets then,” Rory retorts.
“I’m sure he would appreciate that,” Blair whispers, smirking.
“Good lord, do you want the tickets or not?” Rory asks, exasperated.
“I guess we can go,” Shea answers, acting put out.
“Oh, I guess we can go,” Rory mocks. “Jesus, you can just say yes.”
Ashton smiles widely. “But that’s not as fun.”
“Whatever you say,” Rory says, rolling her eyes.
Later that night, Rory texts Nate, saying that everyone is in for the game the following week. He sends back a smiley face and a thumbs up in return. She sighs as she gets ready for bed, thinking over what her friends had told her earlier that night.
She knows that she doesn’t have much to lose in confessing her feelings, but she also knows how busy Nate is. He’s especially focused now with playoffs coming up in a couple of months, and she knows that most of his time is spent at practice or doing something hockey related. Not that she can really blame him, she knows how hard he works, especially being a face of the franchise.
Even Piper has told her that he makes time for her now as a friend, and if he seems to feel the same way, he would definitely make time for her as a girlfriend. But something about it feels selfish to Rory in a way that she can’t explain. So, she decides to wait until the playoffs are over to say anything, and at the very least, it’ll give her more time to feel confident in her confession.
Before she knows it, she and her friends are off to Pepsi Center for the Valentine’s day game. Since this is an afternoon game, Nate agreed to meet up with them after at their usual bar with a couple of his friends. With none of them having plans, they all agreed they could all commiserate together. At the very least, it would feel less lonely than normal.
Something Rory didn’t tell the group is that they got seats right behind the Avs for today's game. She hesitated saying anything, knowing that her friends wouldn’t shut up about it. But maybe that was a bad decision because once they got to their seats and made themselves comfortable, everyone turned towards Rory. She groans, knowing exactly where the conversation has headed. As much as they laid off the teasing about Nate, she also knew they wanted the best for her.
“So, like, nothing has changed in the last week, right?” Blair inquires. “Nothing we should know about?”
“No, Nate just wanted to get us good seats for today,” Rory grumbles. “This is why I didn’t say anything.”
“Oh so you knew that we would be getting good seats today,” Ashton replies, inquisitive. “I’m starting to  think that you’re lying to us.”
“I swear I’m not lying!” Rory exclaims. “He just wanted to do something nice for all of us. Because we’re all his friends.”
“Sure, whatever you say,” Shea replies, smiling.
The game goes by in a blur, and before Rory knows it, they're off to the bar. Thankfully, her friends only tease her a couple more times before laying off. As much as she knows they mean well, it still gets a little tiring not hearing the end of it. When they get to the bar, things are fairly slow, especially considering what day it is.
“So, did you have fun?” Nate inquires as he comes to sit with them at their usual table.
“It was fun, but it would have been even better if Rory told us we got better seats today,” Shea answers, giving Rory a look.
“I wanted it to be a surprise,” Rory groans. “How many times will I have to tell you this?”
Shea snorts. “You know we’ll never let you live it down. But it was seriously a good game.”
“Good, I’m glad you guys had fun,” Nate replies, smiling softly.
As the night starts to pass, Rory feels herself look at Nate more than she wants to admit. But it’s hard not to - he just naturally demands attention. Whenever she catches herself looking too long, she does her best to look away and not think about all of her feelings. As much as it pains her, she’s going to keep true to her promise of not saying anything about them quite yet.
By the time everyone is heading out of the bar, Blair holds onto Rory’s arm, holding her back. Rory gives her a questioning look, but quickly picks up that Blair wants to say something. They wave off the rest of the group, and finally get a moment alone.
“Are you really not going to say how you feel, Rory? You can’t keep quiet forever,” Blair says.
“I - yeah, I’m not going to say anything. It’s just… things are hard for him right now with the playoffs coming up and I don’t want to get in the way of that,” Rory replies.
Blair frowns a little bit. “I have a feeling it wouldn’t be as bad as you’re making it out to be.”
“I’m sure you’re right, but I feel too guilty doing anything,” Rory sighs. “Just let me say something in my own time, okay?”
“Okay,” Blair says hesitantly. “If that’s what you want.”
“It is what I want,” Rory says, much more firmly than she feels.
~ ~ ~
And as much as it pains Rory to do so, she doesn’t say anything all through the lead up to playoffs. Blair keeps giving her looks, but never says anything, knowing that there’s no changing Rory’s mind now. Besides, if Nate turns her down, she has a whole summer away from him to recover from the rejection. She’s just doing her best to keep herself safe at this point.
It’s mid-April now and the playoffs are starting to ramp up, and Rory is hanging out with Nate on a rare afternoon where they’re both free. She’s savoring it as much as she can, knowing that his free time is especially thin now. Nate hasn’t made it to a Friday night bar trip in weeks, and Rory has mostly watched him from afar at games.
“I feel bad that we’ve hardly seen each other lately,” Nate says as he pulls up some random nature documentary.
“You’re busy, Nate,” Rory replies. “I’m not exactly expecting to be a priority right now.”
Nate frowns. “I… that sounds so bad when you put it that way.”
“It’s true, though,” Rory says, shrugging. “And I’m not really hurt by it. I know you and the other guys have a lot to prove this year.”
“I just feel bad about it,” Nate whispers.
“You warned me that this would happen. I can’t exactly be mad that what you said would happen is happening.”
“You’re right, but it doesn’t make me happy.”
“But we’re here now. And I really don’t mind that you forget to text back sometimes,” Rory laughs. “As long as you don’t completely forget about me.”
“I would never,” Nate snorts. “Besides, your friends make it hard to forget anything.”
“And that’s what makes them loveable.”
“Unfortunately,” Nate replies, smiling softly. “Ugh, as much as I love being in the playoffs, it sucks that I don’t get more days like this.”
Rory gives him a curious look. “What, watching random nature documentaries?”
“No, just hanging out with my friends,” Nate says, laughing.
“Huh, didn’t know you had a chill bone in you during the playoffs,” Rory teases.
“Oh my god, I hate you,” Nate groans.
“I’m sure you do,” Rory replies, smiling.
They pass the rest of the afternoon teasing each other, hardly paying attention to anything that plays on the TV. There’s a moment where she wants to say something, put everything out in the open, but it would be the end of everything if she was being honest. So, she keeps quiet, and tries to squash down her feelings.
“Well, I’ll see you soon, I hope,” Rory says as she gets ready to head out. “And don’t forget to text me back.”
Nate smiles softly. “I’ll do my best.”
“I suppose that’s the best I can ask for,” Rory sighs, smiling back. “And good luck on your game on Monday. You’ve been working hard for it.”
“I’ll win it for you,” Nate says softly.
There’s a brief moment where their eyes connect, and Rory thinks about leaning in and kissing him, but she looks away before she makes a mistake. By the time she glances back over, the moment is broken, lost to the short moment of hesitation. She wonders what would have happened if she kissed him, but tries to not think about the what-ifs.
“Alright, I’ll catch you around,” Rory says softly as she heads out.
“Uh, yeah, see you around,” Nate replies awkwardly.
As Rory drives home, she sighs deeply. She feels a twinge of regret at not doing anything, especially with an opportunity like what she had. But rushing it and saying something when she wasn’t ready feels even worse, even though she’s been ready for longer than she wants to admit. As much as she wants to talk to Piper or Blair about what happened, she knows that they would just be confused.
The one thing that keeps her calm is just waiting for the end of the playoffs to happen. And with how well the Avs are doing right now, it might be through the Stanley Cup finals. Rory does her best to make peace with it, knowing that she inflicted it upon herself. Besides, she’s been waiting this long to say something, a couple more months wouldn’t seem like much.
Except the following months seem to pass by like dripping honey. Even with all the things that are piling up at work, Rory finds herself having a hard time focusing. Nate barely replies to her texts anymore, and the responses are usually just smiley faces. It hurts more than she wants to admit to anyone, but her friends pick up on it right away.
“What’s going on with you?” Ashton inquires one Friday night. “You’ve been like… super out of it lately.”
“I - this is going to sound so dumb,” Rory mumbles. “It’s just Nate hasn’t been replying a lot lately, but he’s busy with the Avs right now.”
“Like… he’s just ignoring you?” Blair asks.
“I mean, I guess? But he replies to things eventually, even if it takes a little while,” Rory explains.
“There’s more to it than that, isn’t there?” Shea says. “Don’t forget we can read you like a book, Rory.”
Rory sighs deeply. “I mean, it’s just his replies have been super short, like just emoji responses. I don’t think I’ve gotten an actual word from him since the end of April.”
“That’s actually kind of shitty,” Ashton replies, frowning. “Like, you guys are friends, you think he could respond with something.”
“He’s busy though,” Rory whispers.
“Too busy to send a short text with words to one of his friends?” Blair asks, raising an eyebrow. “I really fucking doubt it, babe.”
“Shit, you’re probably right, but he told me this would happen,” Rory groans.
Blair gives her a look. “That doesn’t make it any better, you know.”
“Yeah, I feel like that makes it even worse,” Shea replies, frowning deeply. “Who the fuck doesn’t reply to their friends?”
“He’s just got a lot going on! I’m sure things will be better soon,” Rory says weakly. “Right?”
“I don’t know, Rory,” Ashton answers weakly. “Maybe just be a bit more firm with him next time. Like he has to reply with words at some point.”
“I guess so,” Rory mumbles.
“If he doesn’t, I’ll personally kick his ass,” Shea replies brightly.
“There’s no way you could take him on,” Rory says, squinting. “I love you, but there’s no way you would beat him in a fight.”
“That’s what you all think, and it’s why I would win,” Shea jokes.
Rory rolls her eyes, snorting. “If that’s what you want to believe.”
“Of course,” Shea replies, smiling brightly.
Things get a little bit easier after that, but there’s still a distinct silence from Nate. As much as Rory wants to wave it off and not be hurt by it, she is. She’s starting to miss the smiley faces at this point because at least then, she knew that he was seeing her messages. But now… now she’s not really sure what to think.
She ends up calling Piper, knowing that her friend will get what she’s going through. And she also doesn’t want her friends in Denver to worry more than they already are about the whole situation.
“Honestly, I don’t think there’s much else you can do unless you want to barge into his apartment,” Piper says after Rory explains everything.
“I can’t do that,” Rory replies, frowning. “I don’t want to force him to hang out when he doesn’t want to.”
“Well, he’s not responding to anything, stopping by won’t hurt anyone,” Piper suggests. “I mean, you’ve been there before.”
“That’s just different,” Rory sighs. “Maybe this is his way of saying he doesn’t want to be friends anymore.”
“Something tells me that you’re wrong about that,” Piper says. “I mean, you said everything was fine the last time you hung out together, right?”
“Yeah,” Rory answers. “Like, I knew he was busy and he said he would try to not drop off the map, but…”
Piper snorts. “That obviously didn’t work out. But are you sure you can’t just stop by or something?”
“It feels like a step too far,” Rory whispers. “Like, I don’t want to seem desperate for attention or anything. I knew he was going to be busy and that I wouldn’t be a top priority, you know?”
“I - shit, that doesn’t sound great,” Piper says. “Maybe just give it until after the playoffs. If he doesn’t say anything afterwards, it’s definitely time to move on.”
Rory sighs. “You’re right. I just feel like I fucked up somewhere and I don’t know how.”
“To be honest, I don’t think there’s anything you could have done differently.”
“I suppose so.”
“Look, I’ll be here anytime you need something, no matter how stupid it sounds. Take care of yourself, babe,” Piper says. “Now, tell me about work? What’s the new hot gossip?”
The conversation moves on to lighter topics and Rory feels lighter after hanging up. She’s still worried about Nate, but there’s nothing she can do about it all now. Whatever happens next, Rory still has her friends and that’s what matters the most, even if she wishes it could turn out a bit differently.
As the weeks drag on, Rory still hears nothing from Nate. It starts to hurt less the more she accepts that he’s never going to respond. Piper suggests going to his place again, but it feels wrong intruding on Nate when they haven’t spoken in months. He’s giving clear enough signs at this point that he wants to be left alone.
It’s early June when Rory hears about the Avs winning the Stanley Cup. She’s happy for them, for Nate, even if they haven’t had a single conversation in ages. They worked hard for this and deserve the numerous celebrations that’ll be coming in the following days.
There’s a moment of hesitation Rory has about sending a congratulatory text to Nate. She’s not sure if it would come off as weird or anything, but she decides to send something anyways. Despite everything, Rory wants Nate to know that she’s proud of him and how hard he’s worked to get this. The silence in the following days isn’t surprising, but something about it still hurts Rory.
“It’s because you care too much,” Blair says at their usual Friday night ritual, smiling sadly. “And he had a chance to say anything, but he didn’t.”
“I don’t know what I was hoping for,” Rory whispers.
“Maybe you were hoping for him to be a decent person,” Ashton snorts. “You’ve given him more chances than he deserves.”
“Like I’ve said before, I’ll kick his ass,” Shea offers. “Dude probably deserves to be knocked down a peg or two.”
“I appreciate it, but he deserves this,” Rory says. “He’s worked hard.”
“Worked harder at breaking your heart though,” Ashton mutters.
Rory rolls her eyes. “It’s fine, I really should have expected this from the start, if I’m being honest. I was pushing my luck even being his friend.”
“No, I don’t think you were,” Blair says firmly. “He was lucky to have you in his life at all.”
“Yeah, he’s the one losing out,” Shea says, smiling.
“You guys are the best,” Rory whispers. “I’m sure I’ll forget about him after the summer is over. Lord knows we have our work cut out for us with all these new jobs.”
“I don’t even want to think about it,” Shea groans.
“Aren’t you the one handing out all the work?” Ashton teases. “I don’t think you have the right to complain about this.”
“Please don’t remind me,” Shea sighs.
Thankfully, the conversation moves past Nate, something Rory is incredibly grateful for. Whatever this summer holds, hopefully getting over him is in the cards for her, even if it pains Rory to think that. There’s no point left in worrying about someone who doesn’t care to respond to her texts as much as she wants to.
Rory’s workload over the summer piles up, which is to be expected for this time of year. Summer is always busy, especially with all of the interns coming through the office. She tries to help them as much as she can, but it makes for some long days. Even though it leaves her exhausted, it also lets her slowly get over the initial hurt of Nate. Besides, she remembers being in their shoes and it’s the least she can do to be nice to them.
By the time October and the start of a new NHL season roll around, Rory feels less bitter and far removed from the whole thing with Nate. But there’s still a small part of her that’s filled with regret and longing for what could have been. She would be lying if she didn’t think about all the things she could have done differently, but didn’t out of fear. It’s too late to change things now, though, and she does her best to not think about it in her weakest moments.
“You know, I never realized how much they plaster Nate’s face all over the city until this year,” Shea comments one Friday night. “Like… do we really need to be seeing his face that much.”
Rory snorts. “You sound more mad about it than I do.”
“Yeah, because you won’t let yourself be upset,” Ashton points out.
“Because I’m not upset,” Rory replies, rolling her eyes. “I promise I’m over him, okay? Like, it wasn’t going to go anywhere.”
“Uh huh, sure it wasn’t,” Blair says, giving Rory a pointed look.
“Look, it’s been months at this point, I don’t have anything to be hung up on,” Rory groans. “Do you want me to prove it or something?”
“Yeah, actually,” Shea says. “Like… are you over him enough to go to a hockey game?”
Rory squints a bit at him. “Are you challenging me?”
“Maybe so,” Shea replies, smiling. “So… how does next week sound?”
“Let me guess, you already got tickets?” Rory inquires.
“You would be right,” Shea answers, smirking. “If any of us catch you longingly staring at him, it’s game over and we’ll have a proper night to drown out our sorrows.”
Rory sighs. “Fine, I guess.”
As the game day approaches, Rory can feel herself growing more and more nervous. While she feels confident about the fact that she’s gotten over the worst of it, she’s not sure how she feels about seeing Nate. Seeing him in person feels odd - especially at a game, where she only ever went to specifically see Nate. But she does her best to assure herself that she’s strong enough to get through one game.
When they grab their seats the following week, Rory doesn’t feel much better. She knows her friends can tell, but they’re being kind enough to not say anything. If anything, Rory wants to prove to herself that she can get through this without being weird about the whole situation. Besides, their seats are rather far back and she tries to reason that it’ll make things easier.
However, she turns out to be very, very wrong when Rory sees the players skate to their bench before the game starts. Her heart drops and feels a twinge of panic seep through her bones. Even though she knows that there’s no way Nate will know they’re here at a game, she fears that he’ll just know and get angry for intruding.
“Are you going to be okay?” Blair whispers.
“I - I think so,” Rory answers softly. “I need to get through this for myself.”
“It’s not too late to leave, it’s really not that big of a deal,” Blair reasons. “I promise none of us will be mad if this is too much.”
“I just - I want to show myself that what happened isn’t that big of a deal, okay?” Rory replies firmly.
Blair frowns. “Okay, but if it gets too much…”
“I’ll let you know,” Rory says, smiling softly.
As the game goes on, Rory can feel herself feeling more comfortable with seeing Nate. Something about seeing him just helps seal the deal, and Rory decides that he’s not worth being sad over as much as her heart says otherwise. By the time it’s over and everyone is leaving the game, she feels a bit lighter.
“So… how are we feeling?” Ashton inquires innocently.
Rory smiles. “I think I’ll be fine.”

As the months pass and as Rory makes it through another Denver winter, she starts to forget about Nate. There’s still times where she thinks about the possibilities, but she’s moved on and passed the worst of it. She has other things to worry about, like a new promotion at work and trying to catch up with all of the new responsibilities that come with it.
“Who the hell decided that I was the best person to be put in charge of the interns?” Rory groans one early spring morning.
“You helped them anyways, we just decided to make it official,” Shea snorts. “Now you officially get to be the mother hen.”
“Have I told you that I hate you?” Rory teases.
Shea lets out a loud laugh. “It’s been a whole week, I’m proud of you.”
“Thanks,” Rory says sarcastically, rolling her eyes. “God, I never realized how many fucking applications we got. How the hell am I supposed to choose?”
“Drunk darts?” Ashton suggests as they pass by Rory’s desk.
“The fact that I briefly considered that…” Rory says, sighing. “I might take a look at them on Monday because I feel like my brain is melting.”
“Welcome to the club!” Ashton replies cheerily. “At least today is Friday and we can all drown our sorrows together.”
“Cheers to that,” Rory sighs.
By the time they get to the bar that night, Rory feels completely exhausted. She loves her work, but her newfound responsibilities have been a lot to try and handle. It only made the Friday night ritual all the more welcome and she had an even better understanding why her friends started it in the first place.
“You know, I never expected to be in this position when I graduated,” Rory remarks.
“What, working in the field you specialized in?” Blair inquires, confused.
“No, like...being in a place I genuinely enjoyed working at. I feel like it’s such a long shot and I never expected to stay here this long,” Rory explains.
“Well, it just means you were meant to end up here,” Ashton says smiling.
“I suppose so,” Rory replies, smiling softly.
None of them process the door opening until Shea starts frowning a little bit. Rory turns a little to look, and feels herself freeze a little when she spots Nate. She spins back and tries to not think about how they're in the same space again for the first time in months.
“Fancy seeing him again,” Shea remarks bitterly. “Can I punch him if he comes over here?”
“We’re not getting kicked out of our favorite bar,” Rory groans.
“Fine, I guess,” Shea sighs. “Only for you, though.”
“Only because I’m here, right?” Rory asks, giving him a stern look.
“No, most definitely not,” Shea answers, trying to not smile.
“Whatever, we’re ignoring them,” Rory says. “I want to have a good time and it doesn’t involve him.”
“Even if he’s staring us down?” Ashton inquires, trying to be quiet.
“Please tell me he’s not,” Rory groans.
“Unfortunately he is,” Blair responds, with a hint of bitterness. “You know what, maybe it’s time we change up bars, try something new.”
“But we’ve been coming here for years, I don’t want to leave just because that asshole is here,” Shea complains. “I don’t want to hunt for another one!”
“Maybe it’s just for one night,” Rory says weakly.
“Do you think the bartenders like us enough to kick out several NHL players?” Ashton inquires innocently. “I mean… I know they have money, but we’re also like… regulars.”
“Might be a long shot,” Blair answers, sighing a little bit.
“He’s still staring at us,” Ashton mumbles. “I kind of just want to leave. Maybe we can stop by the diner right down the road instead.”
“Maybe that can be our thing for a couple weeks to throw him off our trail for a bit,” Shea replies. “And also so I don’t punch him.”
Blair snickers. “That sounds like a solid plan. Let’s go.”
As they head out, Rory chances a glance over at Nate. He’s watching them leave with a frown on his face. Before he gets any ideas on coming over, she looks away, trying her best to seem closed off. Thankfully, it doesn’t seem as if he follows them, so she relaxes as they walk over to the diner.
“This feels weird,” Rory comments as they grab a booth in the back corner. “But I’m glad to be away from him.”
“Do you think he would have tried to talk to you?” Blair asks, concerned.
Rory shrugs. “I mean, maybe, but I don’t see why he would bother at this point. I haven’t seen him in almost a year now.”
“Maybe he’s just now realizing what he lost,” Ashton suggests hopefully.
“Well, it’s staying lost,” Rory snorts. “I really can’t be bothered to fix things with him. He’s had time to say something, but he hasn’t.”
“You really wouldn’t give him a second chance?” Shea asks, raising an eyebrow.
Rory pauses for a moment. “I want to say no, and I think I would in terms of a romantic relationship. But… he was a good friend and it was sad losing him in that sense, you know? And I would want him to work on himself too. Like, I can’t have him dropping off the face of the planet again.”
“I get that,” Blair says softly, smiling sadly. “Maybe one day.”
“Maybe,” Rory sighs. “But also, I think we were headed for heartbreak, there was no other option. I mean… we’re two very different people.”
“But you worked well together,” Shea said. “And that’s the saddest part about all of this.”
Rory shrugs. “It’s over now. There’s no point in caring anymore.”
They end up changing subjects, sensing that Rory is truly done thinking about Nate. Seeing him outside of a hockey game was a weird experience and everyone felt a little bit off balance from it. By the end of the night, Rory feels better, and tries to push any thought of him aside. Whatever reason he came to the bar tonight, she hoped he got the message - that Rory no longer needed him in her life.
The following morning when Rory checks her phone, she feels herself freeze. Looking right back at her is a text from Nate. She hesitates before opening, knowing that whatever it says can’t be good. There’s a moment where she thinks about deleting the message and blocking him, but her curiosity gets the best of her.
I was hoping to talk to you last night, but it looks like you were busy. Maybe we could meet up some other time to clear things up?
Rory can’t help but to laugh. After a year, Nate finally wants to talk? The audacity he has thinking that Rory will just talk to him willingly after everything is too much for her to handle. He’s had plenty of opportunities to fix things, but going about it this way just makes everything even worse.
No, I think I’m good. You made it very clear where I stand in your life.
Rory tosses her phone to the side before seeing if Nate replies at all. Whatever he has to say to her won’t change her mind, not now. Before she can think anymore, she grabs her phone again to call Piper. It’s been a long time since they’ve talked, but Rory trusts her the most right now, knowing that her friend will be the solid voice of reason right now.
“Something tells me something is up if you’re calling me this early on a Saturday,” Piper jokes. “Normally you’re hungover at this point.”
“You’re the worst,” Rory groans. “But you’re right.”
“I’m always here for you. Now, tell me all about it,” Piper replies.
“Well, uh, Nate finally texted me after a whole fucking year asking if we could talk,” Rory says bitterly. “And this dude had the audacity to stop by the bar last night. We ended up leaving because of him.”
“I can fly down and punch him if you want me to,” Piper suggests.
Rory snorts. “I think that Shea is first in line for that.”
“We can take turns then,” Piper says, smirking. “But seriously, how are you dealing with that? Have you blocked him?”
“I - no, not yet,” Rory answers. “I told him it was too late to fix anything.”
“So… just ignore him after this. Unless you want to talk to him.”
“I don’t know if I’m ready for that. There’s so much I want to say to him, but I never thought that it would be like… an actual option.”
“Then just think about it. And he can wait for as long as you need him to. It’s what he deserves after dropping you like he did.”
“I feel like that’s letting him win, though,” Rory whispers.
“There’s no winning in situations like this, especially if you let him feel all of your anger and frustrations. What he did was shitty and wrong, and he deserves to know all of that before he does it to someone else,” Piper explains. “And I know how worthless it made you feel.”
“I didn’t -” Rory tries to say.
“Don’t you dare say that you didn’t feel that way. You called me crying multiple times that summer. He hurt you and he deserves to know that,” Piper says firmly. “That is, if you even want to talk to him.”
“I don’t know,” Rory says softly. “I don’t want to give him the satisfaction of talking again, but I also want to let him know how shitty he made me feel.”
“Maybe that’s all that needs to happen. One conversation doesn’t mean you’re letting him back into your life. It can maybe help put an end to this part of your life.”
“You’re right, you’re right.”
Piper sighs. “I’m sorry you had to see him again, though. I can’t imagine what that all felt like.”
“I’m just lucky I was with friends,” Rory replies. “But thank you, Piper, this helped a lot.”
“Keep me updated, okay? I want to know if I need to knock some teeth out,” Piper jokes.
Rory snorts. “Of course.”
Once they’ve hung up, Rory quickly checks her phone to see if Nate has replied. He still hasn’t, so she decides to continue on with her morning, trying to not think of him. As right as Piper is about having a conversation to try and put an end to anything having to do with Nate, the thought scares her. She knows that there’s a very real possibility that she lets him into her life again, knowing that she misses his friendship.
But she doesn’t want to let herself give in so easily. Nate hurt Rory in ways that she feels like she’s still recovering from. It’s terrifying that he was able to hurt her like this, and the more she thinks about it over breakfast, the more comfortable she gets with telling him all of this, as long as it’s on her terms.
She ignores her phone for the rest of the day and decides to focus on cleaning her apartment instead. It’s been a while since it’s been properly cleaned and she knows it’ll help keep her mind off of Nate. So, she puts on some of her favorite music and proceeds to get lost in her chores. Before she knows it, her stomach is loudly grumbling, and Rory notices that it’s now mid-afternoon.
As she grabs some stuff for a late lunch, she decides to chance looking at her phone. Her heart drops a little seeing several texts from Nate, but Rory opens it before she can think twice about it. She has to read it a couple times before it fully processes what he said.
I’m sorry I broke what trust you had in me as a friend and I want to fix that
In whatever way you see fit
I guess even if it means you never talk to me again. I just...I want to make everything better
Please
Rory pauses for a moment, and tries to think of a response. She wants to talk to him, to let him feel the full impact of how much he ruined her - but she doesn’t want to give him hope. No matter how apologetic he is, Rory doesn’t want to give him too much hope.
I want to talk, but on my terms. You deserve to know what you did to me
I hated you for a long time, Nate
Still kind of do, if I’m being honest
Just… give me some time, okay? I gave up on the idea of you a long time ago
Sighing, Rory puts her phone off to the side, and decides to try and eat her lunch in peace, but she keeps thinking about Nate. Whatever happens next, Rory wants to be ready and confident in what she wants to happen next. At the very core of it all, she’s scared of letting Nate back in and history repeating itself.
If Nate wants to be in her life, she’s going to need to see that she matters to him. But as much as she wants that, Rory knows that it’s really asking for too much. It terrifies her that the thought keeps managing to weasel it’s way into her head, no matter how much she tries to ignore it. Blair might say that it’s a sign, but Rory really hopes that it isn’t.
Her phone buzzes, and she takes a deep breath before opening her phone. So far, Nate has been understanding, but that hardly means anything at the moment.
I understand completely
And I’m truly sorry I ever did that to you
Whatever it takes for me to show you that, I’ll do
You deserve that at the very least, Rory
Thank you, Nate. I’m sorry to make you wait a little longer
I’ll try to not take too long, but this is a lot
I would wait for you forever
Ah, getting poetic now
Maybe you have changed
I’ll take a while, but maybe not that long :)
:)
Rory sighs, but she feels good about not caving to what he wants. As much as she wants to fix everything, she also knows that she’ll regret it. Before she forgets, Rory also sends a text to Piper telling her what happened, knowing that her friend will want to keep tabs on the situation.
Groaning, Rory also remembers that she’s going to have to tell her coworkers what happened as well. Even though they’ve talked plenty of shit, she knows that they’ll be supportive of her reconciling with Nate as long as it’s on her terms. However, she also knows that they’ll gladly make sure to keep him in his place.
When Monday rolls around, Rory can immediately tell that her friends know something is up. Thankfully, they don’t say anything, knowing that she won’t be comfortable talking about it at work. But they keep a close eye on her, like she’ll fall apart at a moment's notice. And maybe they’re right, she’s not really sure what’s held her together this whole weekend.
“So, care to spill whatever’s going on with you?” Ashton inquires, walking with Rory to her car.
Rory notes that Blair and Shea aren’t too far behind, and she sighs, accepting her fate of being cornered by all of them. They all eye her as she leans up against her car and lets out a huge sigh.
“Nate reached out to me to apologize for last year. He wanted to talk in person to let everything out, but I told him no for now,” Rory explains. “I want to talk to him, but on my terms.”
Blair frowns. “Are you sure that’s a good idea?”
“I’m not really sure, but I think I want to let everything out in the open, you know? Like, I want him to know how much it hurt,” Rory answers, shrugging.
“Would you be meeting at his place?” Shea inquires, looking concerned. “Not that I think he would do anything, but like… that’s a lot of pressure.”
Rory pauses for a moment. “I think if we were to meet up, I’d want to do it at my place. I wouldn’t feel comfortable in his apartment. He can come to me.”
“Sounds like you already have a plan,” Ashton remarks, smirking a little.
“It’s going to happen eventually, I think. I just want to be ready,” Rory says. “It feels weird hearing from him again, though. I was ready to let go, but seeing him last Friday was harder than I expected.”
“If this is what you want, we’ll support you in it, okay? I know we shit talk him a lot, but...he was a good guy while he was around,” Shea says seriously.
“Thank you,” Rory says softly. “Now, enough digging around in my personal life, okay?”
“But what else is supposed to keep us entertained?” Ashton snorts. “You’re the one who was besties with an NHL superstar.”
Rory rolls her eyes. “You guys are the worst.”
“But that’s why you love us,” Blair replies, smiling widely.
A couple more weeks go by before Rory thinks about messaging Nate back. There’s a couple nights where she almost caves and sends something to him - but she knows she’s not fully ready yet. It’s a late Friday night after a diner run with her friends that Rory feels like she’s ready to speak to Nate again.
There wasn’t a monumental shift that made Rory change her mind, but rather the fact that her heart stopped falling apart any time she thought of Nate. She thinks she’s ready to have a conversation with him because in the end, she’s not sure if she wants it to be anything more than that.
Against Rory’s better judgement, she sends a text to Nate, fully knowing that he won’t reply until the morning. And that feels safer in a way. He won’t be able to ask questions that she isn’t ready to answer quite yet, at least not over the phone.
I want to talk soon
At my apartment, though
I’d feel better being in a space I feel comfortable if we’re going to be talking
And honestly the sooner the better, if you don’t mind
I want to get this over with
With that, Rory plugs in her phone and tries to fall asleep. Instead, she keeps herself up, thinking of all the things she wants to tell Nate. She wants to let him know how much he hurt her when he left without a word, but still leaving his trace in her every thought. By the time she falls asleep, the sun is just peeking over the mountains, signaling a fresh start.
When Rory wakes up, she pauses, unsure if she wants to check her phone. But she knows that waiting won’t help anything, and it’s best to just check. As she suspected, there were a few texts from Nate. Taking a deep breath, she opens them and skims over the messages.
Whatever makes you feel the best
And I can come over tomorrow night if that isn’t too soon
But I’ll wait for as long as you need me to
Rory pauses for a moment, unsure if it would be too soon. But she did say she was ready, and like ripping off a band-aid, Rory decides it’s best to just get it over with.
Yeah, I can do that. Before or after dinner?
Or during?
Whatever works for me
…..during dinner if you don’t mind
I miss your cooking
Was that too much?
I’m sorry
You better not just be reconciling bc of my food
But yeah, that works
I’m making curry though
Don’t make it too spicy
I’ll try my best lmao
But I guarantee nothing :’)
Rip to my taste buds then lol
But I’ll see you then
Rory takes a deep breath and tries to process the conversation. It felt weird to have Nate joke with her like nothing ever happened. In different circumstances, she would have laughed and teased right back, but it was too much too fast. Nate was picking up where things left off last year, but Rory isn’t ready for that. She’s not even sure she wants to be ready for that again.
Only a moment later, it finally hits her that Nate is coming over to her apartment the following night. She screams into her pillow, and then sends off a text Piper and her other friends. No matter how tomorrow ends up going, Rory knows that she’ll be an absolute mess afterwards. The thought of seeing Nate in her space is terrifying, but it’s a fear she’s willing to face if it means that they’ll be able to resolve everything.
Before she knows it, Rory is pacing her apartment waiting for Nate to come over. Dinner is already made, due to the fact that she was trying to keep herself busy while waiting for him. As much as Rory wanted to prepare a speech for Nate, to make sure she said everything she wanted to, she also knew that she wouldn’t remember any of it the second she saw his face.
When she hears a loud knock on her door, Rory freezes for a moment. This is her last moment to back out, but she steels herself and goes to open the door. The second she opens the door, there’s a moment of silence, Nate and herself unsure of what to do. Seeing him here makes Rory feel overwhelmed.
“I - hi,” Rory greets weakly. “Um, come on in.”
“Uh, thanks,” Nate replies awkwardly, stepping into her apartment. “It smells good in here.”
Rory smiles a little. “Dinner is already finished. I, uh, got kind of nervous.”
“I can leave if you need more time,” Nate says, concerned.
“No, it’s fine. You just… make me feel a lot of things, I guess,” Rory explains. “Waiting even longer wouldn’t have helped anything.”
“If you say so,” he says, obviously not believing her.
“Well, I guess we can eat first and talk over food,” she replies. “Everything is in the same spot. Still haven’t moved anything yet.”
Nate snorts. “I’m not surprised. And I’m guessing nothing is on the top shelves still?”
“You’re literally the fucking worst, McKinnon,” Rory teases. “I can’t believe I invite you over for dinner and this is what you say to me.”
“Oh I - I’m sorry,” Nate replies, flustered.
Rory rolls her eyes. “I’m kidding, it’s fine.”
Nate blushes and goes to get plates. They serve up their food in silence and go to sit on the couch. Neither really know what to say, so there’s a few beats of awkward silence. Rory can tell that he’s waiting for her to say something, not wanting to push her too far.
“For the longest time, I wasn’t sure what to make of you just… ignoring me,” Rory whispers. “I knew that playoffs were going to be a hard time. I mean, you already were terrible at replying to things during the season, so I knew the playoffs were going to be worse.
“But then you just… kept ignoring me, even during the summer. And it was hard to not think it was maybe my fault in some way that you kept ignoring me. Like I wasn’t useful or fucking interesting enough to keep around. That’s what hurt the most, you know?”
Nate looks absolutely broken at the confession. He sets down his plate, and Rory follows suit, knowing that neither of them are going to eat until after this is over.
“I never meant to make you feel that way,” Nate says, voice breaking. “I was so scared of fucking up what we had that I thought it was better to stop talking to you. I figured that I had messed up things enough that you wouldn’t care if we stopped talking to me. Gabe tried to tell me otherwise, but I wouldn’t hear it.”
Rory laughs bitterly, trying to hold back her tears. “I cared so much about you Nate, and seeing you just go about your life made me feel so shitty. And it’s been a year now, and I’ve done so much to get over it, but now here you are… somehow, it feels just like it did last summer.”
“You were the one person I had outside of hockey, and I know that if I was just me and not ‘Nate the hockey player’, you would have liked me just as much. That made me so terrified to mess things up that I thought it was better to lose you sooner rather than later,” Nate confesses.
Rory smiles sadly. “In the end, you felt like ‘Nate the hockey player’, and I think that’s what hurt the most.”
“I - fuck, I never meant for it to turn out like this,” Nate says, choking back his tears.
“Neither did I,” she replies. “Seeing you that night in the bar, it scared me. I thought that I was finally over you, but that night showed me that you could still hurt me.”
“Is there anything I can do to fix this? I wanted to talk and I wasn’t sure if you would ever speak to me again.”
Rory pauses for a moment to think. “I don’t really know, if I’m being honest. I want to forgive you, but I’m scared of this happening all over again. My heart isn’t ready to be broken again.”
“Whatever it takes,” Nate whispers.
“Give me some time, okay? Tonight feels like a lot and I don’t know what to do now that you’re here. But I want to make sure that you actually talk to me, Nate. You can’t ignore me again.”
“I promise I’ll try my best. I just… get so focused on one thing, but I won’t push you away again, I swear,” Nate says.
“Okay,” Rory replies, voice breaking, with tears starting to fall down her face.
“Can I hug you?” Nate asks.
She nods, and he pulls her in, holding her tightly. Rory isn’t sure how long they sit there with her cradled in Nate’s arms, but it feels better than she wants to admit. Having him here like this is overwhelming, and she mourns the fact that things are going to be so very different now, no matter what happens.
“Thank you,” Rory says after a few minutes, voice rough from crying.
“Of course,” Nate whispers, slowly pulling back.
When Rory looks up at him, his cheeks are tear-stained as well, and something about that settles something within her. Something about it helps her feel like he missed her just as much, even if it wasn’t in the same way.
“Our food is probably cold now,” Rory jokes, trying to lighten the mood up a little bit.
“Is that you hinting that you want me to go heat it up again?” Nate asks, smiling.
She laughs a little. “Of course it is.”
“Glad some things never change,” Nate snorts, rolling his eyes. “I’ll get right on it.”
The rest of the evening passes with lighter conversation topics. Rory talks about her promotion at work, and Nate talks about all the new rookies she has to meet soon. It almost feels normal, and it terrifies Rory. Seeing how well he fits back into her life is a lot, and she’s not quite sure how to handle it. She doesn’t want things to move too fast, not before she’s ready, but having these quiet moments back is making it difficult.
“Thank you for having me over,” Nate says softly as he places the dishes in the dishwasher. “I’m glad we could talk again.”
“Me too,” Rory whispers. “Just… I want things back to normal, but I don’t want to be left behind again.”
“I’ll make sure you don’t,” Nate replies, confident. “Playoffs are happening again soon, and I’ll do better this time. I can’t lose you again.”
Rory smiles sadly. “You could always find someone else, though.”
“You aren’t replaceable, you know,” Nate comments. “You keep saying things like that, and I know you think I could, but I can’t.”
“You’re really making this hard, you know.”
“I just want to show you that you’re worth everything.”
“Still loving flattering people, I see,” Rory teases.
Nate rolls his eyes. “And you still love to not accept my compliments. I’ll show you one of these days.”
“I’m sure you will,” Rory says, smiling. “You sure you don’t want leftovers?”
“I told you it was too spicy!” Nate exclaims.
“You think everything is spicy, though,” Rory snorts. “But I guess that just means more for me.”
“I guess so,” Nate says softly, smiling. “Well, I’ll talk to you soon?”
“We better talk soon,” Rory replies pointedly. “No falling off the map again.”
“Not this time,” Nate promises.
Once he’s gone, Rory flops down on her bed and screams into her pillow. The whole evening didn’t feel quite real if she’s being honest. As much as she doesn’t want to admit it, Rory feels herself getting to a place where she can forgive Nate. Tonight reminded her how easy they work together and everything felt… normal. It’s a terrifying thought, especially because if he doesn’t fall off the map again, Rory can envision herself falling in love again.
When Rory walks into work the next morning, she can feel her friends’ eyes on her. She knows that they’re going to interrogate her after work, so she doesn’t mention anything the whole day. Thankfully, they don’t mention anything either, but they definitely keep an eye on her.
“So, emergency meeting at the diner tonight?” Ashton inquires innocently during lunch. “Seems like there’s something going on.”
Rory huffs. “Yeah, an emergency meeting sounds good. There’s a lot I need to catch you up on.”
“Sounds fun,” Ashton replies, smirking. “I’ll tell everyone else about our plans.”
“Thanks, Ash,” Rory snorts.
When everyone finishes up for the day, they all make their way to their new spot. Thankfully, nobody mentions what the meeting was for, but Rory has a feeling that they already know what happened. Once they’re all seated in a booth towards the back of the diner, everyone turns to look at her.
“I feel like I’m being interrogated for a crime,” Rory jokes, trying to lighten the mood.
“Did you commit a crime?” Shea asks innocently.
“Not that I know of,” Rory says weakly. “But I did meet up with Nate last night. He came over last night for dinner.”
Everyone gives her a questioning look, so she launches into her recap of the night. They all listen patiently as Rory stumbles through it all. Even though they let her talk, she can tell that they’re all concerned.
“So, uh, yeah, that was it,” Rory says, finishing explaining.
“Are you sure that you’re okay with this?” Blair asks, genuinely worried.
“I think I'm as ready as I’ll ever be. Seeing him last night made me realize how much I missed him in my life,” Rory answers.
Blair frowns. “But if he doesn’t do better, are you ready to let him go again?”
“I’m going to have to be, aren’t I? I don’t think I really have a choice in the matter,” Rory replies. “But I think I want to give him the second chance.”
“So… I can’t kick his ass on sight now?” Shea jokes.
“I don’t think so,” Ashton sighs. “What a shame.”
Rory rolls her eyes. “You’re all the worst.”
“We love you too,” Blair replies, smiling. “I’m glad that you were able to talk to him, though. Even if this all doesn’t work out, you got to talk it out.”
“Yeah, it was nice,” Rory whispers. “Hopefully things turn out a bit happier this time.”

"You have a place in my heart no one else ever could have."  —  F. Scott Fitzgerald
As playoffs and summer rolled around, Rory was pleasantly surprised at how much Nate texted and called her. Even though this is what she was hoping for all those months ago, it felt odd to hear from him so much. Seeing tangible evidence of Nate trying his best to be better felt like too much to take in sometimes, even if it was something small, like making sure that Rory was taking care of herself during the busy workdays.
The only downfall to this is that Rory can feel herself falling back in love with Nate. She tries to push back on it, and tries to ignore the fluttering feeling every time she sees his name pop up on her phone, but it’s hard. Knowing that Nate was making an effort for her caused a tidal wave of feelings, ones that she’s certain aren’t reciprocated.
“I think you’re fooling yourself, you know,” Blair states one Friday night. “Like… he’s putting in so much effort to reconnect that he has to feel something.”
Rory frowns. “I don’t want to get my hopes, I’ve only just gotten him back. And it’s reading too much into it, right?”
“I’m inclined to back up Blair on this one,” Ashton says. “The dude probably has a million friends, but the fact that he missed you so fucking much, even after a year…”
“But he also ignored me for months,” Rory points out. “We all agreed that was fucking terrible, and I doubt he would do that if he was into me.”
Shea shrugs. “That’s definitely a possibility, but… just think about it, okay? I know it’s too soon, but it could be worth a shot eventually.”
“I’m not going to be the one to fuck things up,” Rory says. “I’m just happy we managed to work things out.”
“If you say so,” Ashton replies. “But do you think things are going to be worse once he comes back to Denver?”
“I’m really trying to not think about that,” Rory mumbles. “I’m sure it’ll all be fine. I was doing fine before.”
“Well, we’re all here if you need it,” Blair says, hesitant.
Thankfully, her friends let the subject drop, but Rory knows that she hasn’t heard the last of it quite yet. As much as she wants to be completely open with Nate, she’s terrified of making things awkward between them. It’s only been in the last couple of months that they’ve gotten back to their easy camaraderie they had before.
When September rolls around, Shea insists that Rory invites Nate out to a Friday night bar run. After Nate happily accepts for the following week, Rory starts to feel nervous. She knows that her friends are probably going to give him a subtle shovel talk, and she’s honestly not quite sure how she feels about it. As appreciative she is about her friends looking out for her, Rory also doesn’t know how Nate is going to feel about it.
“You can’t be too mean to him,” Rory states as they all walk to the bar. “I can’t have you scaring him off, okay?”
“We’ll be on our best behavior,” Ashton says cheerily, smirking a little.
“Good lord,” Rory mutters. “At least wait until he’s had a drink or two.”
Shea shrugs. “I think we can manage that.”
By the time they get to the bar, Nate is already there, having grabbed their usual table. Rory warms at the thought of him remembering something like that. Once they all grab their seats, there’s a few beats of silence, nobody quite sure what to say first.
“It’s been a while, good to have you back,” Shea greets, eyeing Nate up. “Good job on winning the cup last year. Rough you couldn’t do it again.”
Nate laughs nervously. “Thanks, we tried our best. Just happy to get to the playoffs again, though.”
Ashton snorts. “We’re not the media, dude. You can be pissed off if you want to be.”
“I - I mean, it’s true,” Nate says weakly. “It was hard getting so close and not winning it again. But, uh, what do you want to drink? I figure the first round can be on me.”
The group looks at each other in pleasant surprise, but lists off their drink orders. When Nate goes up to the bar, they all watch him like a hawk. As Nate’s waiting for their drinks, a girl walks over to Nate, obviously flirting with him. He looks caught  off-guard for a moment, but then smiles brightly, appearing to flirt back. Rory’s friends look to her in concern, and she does her best to shrug it off. It’s not like her and Nate are dating - they’re truly just friends, even if her feelings say otherwise.
“Rory....” Blair whispers.
“I told you, we’re just friends,” Rory whispers harshly. “It’s not that big of a deal, he can do whatever he wants.”
Blair frowns, but doesn’t say anything as she notices Nate walking back with their drinks. Despite what Rory is feeling, she knows that she has no right to be jealous over Nate. They’ve both made it very clear that they’re just friends, and Rory isn’t inclined to mess things up now, not when they’ve just got each other back.
“Sorry it took so long, I just got distracted talking to someone,” Nate says, blushing faintly.
Shea raises an eyebrow. “Did you get a number?”
“Oh, uh, no, I’m here to hang out with you guys tonight,” Nate answers, flustered. “And, uh, I’m not super interested in hooking up right now. I have other things to worry about.”
“Riiiight,” Ashton replies. “So, what have you been up to since you left us last?”
“Not much really, just a lot of practice and games. I also moved into a proper house again since my apartment was feeling a little small,” Nate explains.
“Wait, really? You were just starting to make your apartment look good,” Rory teases. “Am I going to have to give you decorating advice again?”
“I - no, I have everything covered,” Nate defends. “Besides, it was never that bad!”
“Uh huh, whatever you want to say,” Rory says, laughing.
“I mean, I did hear plenty of horror stories from Rory. We’re here to support you,” Ashton says, smirking.
Nate pouts. “I can’t believe I paid for all your drinks and you all gang up on me like this.”
“Don’t worry, it just means we like you well enough,” Shea replies, smiling brightly. “But honestly, you’ve just been up to hockey? That sounds kind of…boring.”
“It’s what I do every summer,” Nate mumbles, obviously embarrassed.
“He has to keep up his reputation, don’t worry,” Rory jokes.
“At least you have my back,” Nate sighs.
The rest of the night passes in a similar lighthearted manner. By the time everyone is getting ready to head out, Rory feels pleasantly warm and slightly more drunk than she normally gets. It’s just been nice to be back with Nate in the way she always remembered too fondly. She wants to tell him that, so she looks around, trying to find him.
But her heart drops when she sees the girl from earlier heading over to Nate. Rory glances away and continues following her friends out of the bar. They all look behind her expectantly, thinking that Nate is still following her.
“He’s, uh, talking to someone. I think we’re good to head out,” Rory says, trying to smile.
“Rory…” Blair says softly.
“No, no, it’s good. I don’t get to be jealous or mad over this. I’m just a little bit drunk,” Rory whispers.
“Okay, I’m driving you home. Your car will be fine in the staff parking lot over the weekend,” Blair sighs.
“Thank you,” Rory whispers.
The car ride to her apartment is silent, neither wanting to broach the subject. Thankfully, Blair helps Rory to her bed, but before Blair can leave, Rory holds her close and starts sobbing. Rory really isn’t sure how long they sit there with Rory crying into her friend's shoulder, but by the time she pulls back, Blair’s shoulder is wet from the tears.
“Are you really going to be okay?” Blair asks quietly.
“No,” Rory answers, voice rough. “This wasn’t the plan.”
“You never really stopped loving him,” Blair states.
Rory laughs bitterly. “I don’t think I did. And I hate him for that.”
“I still have a couple of friends that might be interested, you know,” Blair comments, joking.
“I’ll keep that in mind,” Rory snorts. “Thank you for this.”
“You’re one of my best friends, of course I’m here to help,” Blair says. “Maybe call Piper in the morning, okay? She always seems to knock the most sense into you.”
“That… is too true,” Rory sighs. “I’ll see you on Monday?”
“Yeah, see you on Monday,” Blair says before heading out.
Once Rory hears the door shut, she sighs deeply. It scares her that just seeing Nate flirt with someone had this effect on her. She knows that she shouldn’t be hurt if she isn’t willing to confess her feelings because of course Nate is going to find someone else. He’s a professional athlete, it’s not like he doesn’t have options.
And Rory has to accept that she’ll never be an option - even as much as she wants to be. Nate put so much effort into reconnecting because he wants to be friends again, not because he ever loved her in any non-platonic sense of the word. It hurts, but Rory will learn to get over herself as long as it means keeping Nate in her life. She lost him once, she refuses to have it happen again.
When she wakes up the next morning, she feels a bit gross, and as she remembers the previous night, Rory doesn’t feel much better. But she also knows that she should call Piper, knowing that her friend will want to know what’s going on.
“Hey sweetie, what’s up?” Piper asks in lieu of a proper greeting.
“Um, so you know how Nate and I have been becoming friends again? I think I might have fucked things up and fallen in love with him,” Rory confesses.
“Does he not love you back? I’ll come and kick his ass,” Piper says.
“I don’t think he does,” Rory whispers.
“Wait, why do you make it sound like you don’t know for sure?”
“He was flirting with someone last night and we agreed to be just friends.”
“Are you sure that he could have just said that to make sure you were in his life no matter what? He could be just as scared as you are about saying something.”
“Why would he be scared of me?” Rory inquires, confused.
“How many times do I have to tell you that you’re not something replaceable? You are worth so much, and I think Nate knows that,” Piper says firmly. “You should tell him, Rory.”
“I only just got him back, though,” Rory whispers.
“Just… think about it, okay? I really think it could be something good if you gave it a chance.”
“I’m not ready yet,” Rory says softly. “Losing him again would feel… god, it would hurt even more than before. It would tear my heart out, Piper.”
Piper takes a deep breath. “I think Nate loving you has been so subtle that it’s hard to see at first. But I think it’s there, for all that it matters.”
“I hate this so much,” Rory sobs, not able to hold back the tears. “I can’t love him anymore, Piper. I can’t handle this.”
“You can, babe, I know you can handle this,” Piper says soothingly. “If he really doesn’t love you back, then there will be someone else to love you just as much as you love everyone else.”
“You really think so?”
“Of course I do. You deserve it.”
“I hate that, even now, he has me crying over him,” Rory whispers.
“I’m sorry I can’t be there for you, but I know you’ll figure it all out soon enough. Now, is there anything else fun you can update me on?”
“Oh, uh, yeah,” Rory says, grateful for the distraction.
By the time Rory hangs up, she’s feeling a bit better. Even though Piper seems to think that Nate has feelings for her, Rory refuses to mess things up again. She’s willing to keep her friendship with Nate, even at the cost of seeing him love other people in the way she wants for herself. As much as she doesn’t want to, Rory thinks it might be time to ask Blair about her friends.
Despite coming to that resolution, it still takes Rory several days to build up the confidence to ask Blair about it. As much as she doesn’t want to admit it, something about it feels like she’s giving up on Nate. But she’s cried over him enough now, and she accepts that it’s time to move on forward from her feelings.
“Wait, so you’re… actually interested?” Blair inquires, obviously unsure. “Or are you doing this just to get over Nate?”
“A little bit of both, if I’m being honest,” Rory answers. “But I have to put myself out there eventually. I can’t keep putting it off.”
Blair frowns a little. “Well, if you’re totally sure, then I can set something up. Do you remember Jacob from the holiday party last year?”
“Yeah, he seemed fun,” Rory says, already knowing where this is going.
“He was definitely interested in you, but I knew you were still going through it with Nate, even if you didn’t want to admit it. But if you’re up for it now…”
“I’m definitely up for it now.”
And this is how Rory finds herself going on a coffee date with Jacob the following Saturday. It’s definitely awkward at first, but once they find their stride, Rory finds herself enjoying her time. They spend hours talking about anything and everything. By the time the date is over, Rory feels tentatively hopeful about the whole thing.
Once Rory gets back to her apartment, she notices a text from Nate asking if she wants to get dinner with him. She hesitates - she doesn’t want to ruin the happiness she felt earlier today with all of the confusing feelings Nate brings with him. But that’s also not his fault, so Rory says he can come over if he brings takeout.
Nate sends a smiley face and that he’ll grab food from her favorite diner on the way. While Rory waits, she tries to calm herself down. Her date with Jacob was good, and he was genuinely interested in her, not something she could say for Nate. Before she knows it, she hears Nate knocking on the door.
“Fancy seeing you here,” Rory greets as she lets him in.
“You replied late today. Rough night at the bar last night?” Nate teases, setting the food down in the kitchen.
Rory blushes. “Oh, uh, I actually went on a date today, so that’s why I didn’t reply.”
“That’s, uh, that’s great,” Nate says, smiling a little. “Was it a good one?”
“Yeah, we had a great time. I mean, it was pretty chill, but it was nice to get to know Jacob a bit more,” Rory explains. “We actually met last year at the company holiday party.”
“Oh, I’m glad it went well,” Nate says awkwardly.
“Are you okay?” Rory inquires, confused.
“Yeah, of course, just a bit tired from practice, I guess.”
“If you say so. Now, did you get the usual?”
Nate snorts. “I’m a creature of habit, what else do you expect?”
Things lighten up a bit after that, the awkwardness slowly disappearing the longer Nate hangs out. Rory’s really not too sure what to think of it, but she takes it worth a grain of salt. If he says practice has been exhausting, then she’ll just take his word for it.
The weeks pass and Rory goes on more dates with Jacob, even to the point of bringing him to this year’s holiday party as her date. Nate hardly asks about him anymore, but Rory takes that as him not really being into her romantic life. She can get that, especially since she hardly ever asks about his dating life as well, even if it was because she was scared to hear the answer.
All of the careful walls Rory has built recently all fall apart on a Saturday afternoon. Jacob is over for lunch, and he seems to have a serious look on his face. Rory doesn’t think much of it at first, thinking it must be something work related that he’s still hung up on.
“Are you feeling okay?” Rory inquires softly. “Looks like you’re doing a lot of thinking over there.”
Jacob smiles softly. “I - well, I really hope you don’t take this the wrong way, but are you in love with Nate?”
“Am I… what?” Rory replies, freezing. “Where did you get that idea?”
“I’ve seen the way you look at him the couple of times we’ve gone to games, and just the way you talk about him…” Jacob explains. “It’s okay if you love him, but I really don’t think we should be dating if that’s the case.”
Rory pauses for a moment, thinking over her answer. “I lost my chance with him a long time ago, and… I’m still trying to get over it, I guess.”
“You know, I wouldn’t be surprised if he loves you back,” Jacob says, smiling sadly.
“That would be a nice thought,” Rory replies, trying to laugh. “But I promise I wouldn’t be here right now if I didn’t want to.”
Jacob sighs deeply. “You’re an amazing person and anyone would be lucky to have you. And if Nate doesn’t realize what he has, he’s a fucking idiot. But I think you need to figure out your feelings first.”
“Are you… breaking up with me?” Rory asks, voice cracking.
“Shit, I’m so sorry,” Jacob says softly. “I just think you need to say something to Nate because something tells me he won’t say no.”
Rory laughs bitterly. “You wouldn’t be the first person to tell me that.”
“Then maybe they’re right,” Jacob points out. “Look, this is just as hard as it is for me, but I’ve seen how you look at him. This is the healthiest thing for both of us to do, okay?”
“Shit, you’re right, I know you are,” Rory groans. “It just fucking sucks.”
Jacob smiles sadly. “Things will get better soon, I promise. I’ll, uh, see you around.”
“Yeah, of course,” Rory says softly as Jacob heads out.
As sad as she is over what happened, Rory knows that Jacob is right. Despite how much she enjoyed being around him and doing things with him, there’s still a small part of her that’s hung up on Nate. And in the end, that isn’t fair to either of them in the long run.
It also makes her think about how honest she wants to be with Nate. He’s going to want to know what happened between her and Jacob, but she’s not sure if she should tell him exactly why. The thought of telling him everything is terrifying, but if there’s any chance that he could feel the same way, even after everything that’s happened…she’s not quite sure what to make of it all.
When Monday rolls around, she asks her friends for an emergency meeting at the diner after work. They all look a bit worried, but agree to not ask any questions until then. If anyone could talk sense into Rory, it would be them.
“So… what’s going on?” Ashton inquires once everyone is piled into a booth.
“Jacob broke up with me because I’m still in love with Nate,” Rory confesses in a rush. “And… I don’t know what to do.”
“I - well, that’s a lot to unpack,” Shea replies. “I thought you were over Nate.”
Rory snorts. “So did I, but I think I was ignoring my feelings because I had Jacob. And, uh, that’s obviously not very healthy at all.”
“Are you going to tell Nate about them?” Blair asks innocently. “Because I think he deserves to know. And if things don’t work out, maybe you can finally move on.”
“I - honestly, I really don’t know,” Rory whispers. “I know it’s probably the right thing to do, but it scares me. The thought of him rejecting me hurts more than I want to admit.”
“I know I’m a huge advocate of saying things when you’re ready, but it might be time to do something about it,” Blair says.
“Yeah, we all love you, Rory, and it hurts seeing all of this happen,” Ashton replies. “Just consider it, okay? And if things go to shit, we’ll be ready with junk food and shitty wine.”
Rory smiles sadly. “Thanks, guys, I don’t know what I would do without you.”
Things lighten up a bit after that, but Rory feels a bit better. Asking Nate to put in effort to try and make their friendship better only makes sense if she’s doing the same. Sure, this has the potential to ruin everything, but it’s not any better to keep her feelings trapped up either, especially if her heart is out on her sleeve.
Despite coming to this conclusion, Rory avoids Nate for as long as she can. She’s still afraid of rejection, of being officially told that he doesn’t feel the same way. Blair does her best to encourage Rory, and it’s not like Nate’s going to accept being ignored, not this time. Eventually, it comes down to Nate coming to Rory’s place unannounced for them to meet up.
“Oh, uh, hi,” Rory greets as she opens the door for Nate.
“I was getting worried about you,” he replies, frowning. “But everyone said that you were just really busy.”
“Uh, yeah, it’s been a bit hectic. I’ve been starting to open the internship applications for the summer, so there’s a lot of stuff to focus on,” Rory explains with uncertainty as she leads them to the couch.
“I’m not intruding, am I?” Nate inquires, frowning.
“No, of course not,” Rory answers, taking a seat next to him. “Um, I guess I’ve also been a bit out of it because Jacob broke up with me.”
“Oh,” Nate says, shocked. “I - shit, are you okay?”
Rory feels her heart pounding in her chest as she decides to confess and lay everything out in the open. There’s going to be no going back after this, but she has to be brave for just this one moment.
“I think I will be,” Rory says quietly. “He actually broke up with me because he thinks I’m still in love with you.”
Nate freezes for a brief moment, looking like a deer in headlights. “And… are you still in love with me?”
“Yeah, I am,” Rory whispers. “I think I’ve been in love with you for a long time, but could never fully admit it to myself.”
“What a coincidence,” Nate says, laughing a little. “Because I’m in love with you too. I’ve been trying to get over you for so long, but it always comes back to you. Losing you the first time was terrifying.”
Rory gives him a confused look. “Why did you never say anything? I would have said yes.”
“You’re one of the best things to ever happen to me and the thought of fucking it up… I couldn’t handle it, so I focused fully on playoffs. Gabe tried to get me to say something, but I thought never seeing you again was better than hearing no,” Nate explains.
“I can’t believe we’ve both been so dumb,” Rory says breathlessly.
“Can I kiss you?” Nate asks softly.
“Of course you can, you idiot,” Rory answers, just as soft.
When he leans in to kiss her, she feels a brief moment of disbelief that it is actually happening. But it’s so much softer than she was expecting as she leans into it, holding onto his shoulders to try and ground herself. As Nate pulls away, Rory feels the immense loss, even though he’s right in front of her.
“I waited so long to do that,” Nate says.
“Same here,” Rory replies, giggling.
“Um, would it be rushing if I asked you to be my girlfriend already?” Nate asks, nervous.
Rory shrugs. “Maybe, but it’s a yes anyways.”
“That’s good,” Nate whispers before kissing Rory again.

“When I go towards you, it is with my whole life.” — Rainer Maria Rilke
It’s summer again in Denver and Rory has taken to staying over at Nate’s place more often than not. He decided to come back early this year to spend more time with her to make up for lost time. Rory was flustered at first, knowing that it was disrupting his usual routine, but he was insistent that she was worth it.
Rory rolls over and curls into Nate, who’s still surprisingly in bed. He kisses her head softly, causing her to smile. It’s rare that they cuddle together in the morning with Nate’s training schedule, so she enjoys every moment she can.
“Good morning,” Nate says softly. “Are you feeling okay?”
“Yeah, just enjoying this,” Rory mumbles. “Thought you would be gone by now.”
“This seemed a little bit better than working out,” Nate jokes.
Rory laughs and adjusts to look up at him, smiling widely. Nate leans down to give her a quick kiss before setting his phone back down on the nightstand. In this moment, Rory feels the most content she’s felt in a long time. Everything just… feels right and she doesn’t want to break the moment.
“What are you staring at?” Nate asks, trying to not laugh.
“You,” Rory answers, smiling a little before giving him a quick kiss.
“Mmm, morning breath,” Nate mumbles, kissing her back. “Also didn’t realize I was that nice to look at.”
“Well, you are. And I’m just really happy,” Rory states.
Nate's eyes crinkle as he smiles widely and goes to kiss Rory again. They get lost in each other and the slowing of time that only an early summer morning can bring. This time, Rory pulls away, knowing that they have other matters to take care of today. She knows that there will be plenty of other moments like this to enjoy now that they have forever ahead of them.
“You promised that we would go furniture shopping today,” Rory says.
“Ugh,” Nate groans, pulling her up to kiss her jaw. “I don’t want to though.”
“We can’t keep putting this off forever, though,” Rory points out. “I’ll just keep bugging you until we do it.”
“Why can’t I just give you my credit card? It’s not like I’m going to be any help,” Nate points out.
“But I want you to be there,” Rory replies, smiling. “I like being around you.”
“I’m sure you won’t be saying that two hours into furniture shopping. There’s a reason why I made my mom do all the shopping.”
“And I love your mother, she made some very good choices. But it’s… kind of empty here, isn’t it?”
Nate sighs. “Fine, I guess I can go. Just this once.”
“I love you,” Rory blurts out, then immediately freezing.
“Oh,” Nate says softly, seemingly surprised.
“I - sorry that’s probably too much,” Rory whispers.
“But you meant it?”
“Of course I do. You’re one of the best things to happen to me, Nate. I know things have been hard before this but...I wouldn’t change a thing.”
Nate stares at Rory for a moment, trying to process everything. He reaches over and holds her face, stroking her jaw before giving her a quick kiss.
“I love you too,” Nate confesses softly as he pulls back. “I’m so sorry I left you the first time, but I promise to keep making it up to you, no matter what.”
Rory laughs a little, before smirking. “And now you can make it up to me by going furniture shopping with me.”
“I guess it’s not going to be so bad with you if it means I get to keep you around.”
“Good answer, babe.”
“I’m going to make some coffee, but take your time.”
Rory hums a little. “Okay, I’ll be out soon.”
Once Nate is out of the room, Rory takes a deep breath. Despite being together for months now, he still manages to set her off balance in the best of ways. There’s brief moments where none of this feels real to Rory - she still has times where it’s hard to imagine Nate being happy about dating her. But hearing Nate tell her that he loves her...something about it settles some of her worries about their relationship.
The smell of fresh coffee finally tempts Rory to roll out of bed and throw on one of Nate’s old t-shirts in place of her pajamas. As she makes her way to the kitchen, she also hears the sizzling of bacon and Nate cracking some eggs. This brings a small smile to her face, knowing that this means Nate is going to try and push for a lazy morning as long as possible.
“You look nice,” Nate says, smiling.
Rory rolls her eyes. “I don’t look any better than before.”
“Ah, I think that’s where you’re wrong,” Nate remarks, giving her a quick kiss. “You -”
“Always look better with my clothes on,” Rory finishes, smiling. “I think you’ve mentioned it a couple of times.”
“Still true, no matter how many times I’ve said it,” Nate says. “I’ve got breakfast going, so you can just grab some coffee and relax.”
“This is nice,” Rory replies softly. “It’s not going to get you out of shopping today though.”
Nate sighs, laughing a little. “It was worth a shot.”
“You should feel lucky that I’m going furniture shopping for a place I don’t even live in, though,” Rory points out. “Like, I’m not even going to fully enjoy everything I pick out.”
“You could though,” Nate blurts out, immediately blushing.
“Are you… implying something here?” Rory inquires, raising an eyebrow.
“Um,” Nate says. “I was just thinking you could, uh, maybe move in with me to fully enjoy whatever you pick out.”
“Babe, you literally just told me that you loved me this morning,” Rory snorts. “I appreciate the offer, but this is a lot right now.”
Nate groans and hides his face in Rory’s shoulder. She laughs a little, knowing how embarrassed he’s feeling right now. Ever since they’ve started dating, he’s gotten a lot better at communicating, even if it means blurting out the first thing that comes to mind.
“Look, my answer isn’t a no,” Rory says. “I still have my lease for a little less than a year, but after that, we can talk.”
“Okay,” Nate mumbles before pulling back. “I’m sorry for being too much.”
Rory smiles. “I don’t mind it, you know that. But if you ever want to back out of the offer…”
“I’m not going to back out,” Nate pouts.
“Yeah, yeah, whatever you say, babe,” Rory says, smiling. “Now make sure the bacon isn’t burning, okay?”
Nate smiles, kissing her softly. “Okay, can do.”
This might not be how Rory was expecting her morning to go, but she’s grateful for it nonetheless. Being here with Nate likes this is more than she could have asked for this time last year, and she’s never felt so lucky.

Roy feels ready to fall asleep at his desk as he approaches the double doors to his office. The hot coffee cup in his hand is the only thing keeping his eyes open. He’s conscious of not spilling it as he walks and the heat bleeds through the supposedly heatproof cardboard holder, searing his fingertips. Every so often on the walk back he had to switch hands to stave off the pain. Roy had even glared at the cardboard once or twice, grumbling about false advertising as he switched for the umpteenth time.
It wouldn’t be the first time he’s slept in the office, but he can’t. He’s stayed back with the Lieutenant to finish up some loose ends from the week, so he really needs to buckle down and get to work. He also couldn’t do that to her. Not only because they were working overtime and he’s not that much of an asshole, but also because, unfortunately, they’d somehow uncovered even more work to do while finishing things up, so they were due in for a long night. Hence the late-night coffee run.
The Lieutenant had declined his caffeine offer, opting to remain in the office and continue working. So, Roy had rushed across the street from Central Command and picked up a coffee for himself and a pastry for her. She may not want to eat it tonight, but it would keep until tomorrow, the shop owner assured him. It would be a small surprise and gesture of thanks at least. Far less than what she deserves, but all he can give tonight.
Regardless of their long day, the evening is not all bad, Roy muses as he pulls down the door handle outside the office, because he gets to spend some time with her.
Once inside the office, Roy freezes. He blinks at the sight before him, seeing the Lieutenant’s head down on her desk. Immediately he thinks something is wrong, but the spark of panic isn’t given a chance to form fully. He can see her face and takes note of how relaxed her expression is. He can also see the gentle rise and fall of her back as she breathes evenly. One hand is tucked underneath her cheek, lying flat on the desk, while her other arm is a pillow for her head.
Roy blinks.
She’s asleep.
He blinks again because he can’t quite comprehend the fact.
The sudden burning heat from his coffee makes him hiss in annoyed pain and it jerks him out of his shock. He switches hands immediately.
Once the surprise has worn off a fond smile tugs Roy’s lips upwards because he can’t help but think about how peaceful – and beautiful – she looks. She’s completely at rest and without any worry or stress.
He turns quickly and locks the office door. No one should be making the rounds at this hour, however he knows that if they caught the Lieutenant asleep, not only would she be mortified and be wracked with shame and guilt for succumbing to her exhaustion in the first place, but there would be disciplinary action as well.
Roy contemplates waking her. He knows he should and knows she would want him to do so as well, but he doesn’t have it in him. It’s been an arduous week for all of the team, but especially for the two of them. Their hours have been long, with little time for breaks, and their sleep has been cut short because they needed to return to the office early to make their way through the workload. This is the last night of it all – tomorrow they are free – and, Roy supposes, there is only a small bit of work left to do. He can take over the reins for a while and let her sleep.
Riza Hawkeye simply does not fall asleep at work or at her desk, so she must need the extra rest.
He can give her that for a while. She deserves it more than anyone.
His feet carry him over to her desk, to the side of her chair, and Roy can’t help but smile again as he sets his eyes upon her features, so serene and relaxed. Roy places his coffee and the paper bag with her pastry down atop her desk. He gives in to the urge to reach out to her, placing his hand atop hers. It’s tucked underneath her cheek, so his knuckles brush against the soft skin of her face. The Lieutenant stirs slightly at the contact but doesn’t awaken. Her skin is warm to the touch because of her breath and the heat from her face. Like a welcoming fire on a long, cold night, warming his soul with its presence.
Leaning over, Roy presses a kiss against the side of her head.
“Sleep well, Riza,” he breathes. His lips move against her hair, and it tickles his skin as he catches a waft of her shampoo. It’s the one he remembers, and the one she’s used for years. It is so quintessentially her, that it makes him grin like a fool when he recognises it.
Riza sighs gently in her sleep.
Chancing his luck even further, Roy presses another kiss, but against her cheek this time. When he pulls away, he regretfully removes his hand from atop hers, but then starts unbuttoning his jacket. Once he’s shrugged it off, Roy drapes it over her shoulders, ensuring it’s tucked in securely, so it won’t slip away from her.
He walks over to his own desk with his coffee, leaving the pastry be, and settles in to get to work. The brief moment of affection has invigorated him, for if he works quickly, he can hopefully finish the work before she wakes up. It would spare her from needing to do more work when she clearly needs to rest instead.
Roy takes a sip of his coffee and puts pen to paper, determined and motivated to work.

Riza wakes to a light weight covering her shoulders, but the feeling of it doesn’t completely register with her right away. It’s warm and holds a distinctly familiar smell but she cannot place it while still half asleep. The comfort it brings is almost enough to lull her back to sleep, but something within her is fighting the urge. Her eyelids are heavy with fatigue when she blinks them open, but eventually they manage to pry themselves apart and she comes face to face with a… desk?
Her body jerks upright. In the chair her spine is ramrod straight and a cold sweat breaks across her skin. It has nothing to do with her lingering cold from earlier on in the week, it’s because she realises she’s fallen asleep at her desk. At work.
Panic flies through her and adrenaline courses through her veins, banishing any lingering tiredness immediately. She’s completely alert and awake.
That was also the moment she finally registered the weight on her shoulders. It had slipped off her body when she lurched upright, sliding down her back and pooling in a heap at the back of her chair. Before she can get her bearings properly and look down to see what it is, someone speaks.
“Lieutenant,” a voice greets cordially, as if nothing is amiss.
Her head snaps around to find the Colonel sitting at his desk in just his shirt with his sleeves rolled up to his elbows. His brow is furrowed as he almost glares at the document within his hands. She fears it’s because of her misconduct, however when he glances up expectantly to await her answer, his expression relaxes, and he smiles.
“Did you rest well?” His question is spoken quietly, but it is not mocking, sarcastic, or displeased. He’s completely genuine.
The skin of her face heats up with shame. Before she can open her mouth to apologise profusely, the Colonel holds up his hand to halt her.
“Don’t worry about it,” he assures her. “No harm, no foul.”
“Sir, I am so sorry for falling asleep at my post.”
“Lieutenant, it’s fine,” he replies softly with a gentle smile. “I figured you could use the rest,” he shrugs casually and goes back to his work. “I know I desperately want to do the same, so I don’t blame you,” he chuckles, and Riza realises he’s not lying. She can see the fatigue on his face, around his eyes. Like her, there were dark circles underneath them.
That not the point though, and she tells him as much.
“Either way, the work is… done!” With a flourish he finishes his signature and tosses the pen down on the desk in triumph, looking extremely proud of himself. “I was hoping to get it completed before you… woke up.” He lowers his voice tactfully at the end of his sentence, and she appreciates that.
What if someone had walked in while you were asleep?
Riza internally berates herself again.
While the Colonel stretches in his chair, Riza straightens her uniform. Out the corner of her eye she sees a white paper bag sitting on top of her desk and she frowns at it. Before she can comment, the back of her hand brushes against something. She sees a sleeve of their standard issue jacket lying haphazardly across her lap, and Riza remembers the weight that had been on her shoulders when she awoke.
Riza blinks down at it.
“Is it all right if I take my jacket back?” The Colonel is before her suddenly, speaking in a gentle voice as a smile teases the corners of his lips. His hand is held out, patiently awaiting her to return his item of clothing.
Nodding, Riza reaches around and hands it back. She averts her eyes before standing from her chair to pack up her things.
It’s not lost on her that he covered her with his own jacket while she slept. It was very sweet of him but is something she’ll probably be better mulling over once she’s in the privacy of her own home and away from the source of her embarrassment and disappointment. She shelves it for later, deeply appreciating his gesture, but honestly just wants out of the office as fast as possible, if she can.
“Here.” In his hands, held out towards her, is the paper bag that had been on her desk. “I picked it up for you when I ran out to get some coffee. If you don’t want to eat it tonight, the shop owner said it will keep until tomorrow,” the Colonel explains as he shrugs his jacket on his shoulders.
Peeking inside, Riza is curious.
He’d bought her a pastry.
She doesn’t know what to say. First the jacket, now this.
“Sir…”
“Call it a thank you gift for all your hard work,” he grins. “I only wish I could offer you more.”
“No,” she shakes her head. “Sir, this is more than enough. That was very kind of you. Thank you.” She’s completely touched by what he’s done for her. She’d make sure to repay the stolen work time back later, as well as pay the Colonel back as well. It was the least she could do.
“You’re welcome,” he nods happily. “Would you like a lift home?”
It wouldn’t be responsible for her to get behind the wheel. The adrenaline that had been raging through her veins upon the realisation she’d fallen asleep at work had dwindled, leaving her with the same fatigue she’d felt all week due to the workload and her recovering from a bothersome cold. The same fatigue that had betrayed her that evening.
“Thank you, sir,” she agrees.
His grin makes her stomach do a small, pleasant flip.
She reaches for the door and finds it locked. Confused, she turns to see the Colonel pulling a key out of his pocket.
“I took some precautionary measures,” he answers her unspoken question. “And it was also to ensure you would remain undisturbed.”
“Really?”
“Of course,” he replies as if it’s the most natural thing in the world, that he would do such a thing for her.
But, Riza supposes, it really is for Roy. He would absolutely do something like that for her.
A warm feeling coils inside her stomach and slowly spreads, climbing up her ribcage and settling gently and comfortably around her heart. It causes a smile to spread across her face as she stares back at him, once again, extremely grateful of his thoughtfulness.
In response, the Colonel's expression softens, and he returns her smile. “Anything for you, Lieutenant,” he murmurs quietly before opening the door and offering her to step through first. “You know that,” he adds, his voice stronger as she walks passed him. “Plus, how many times have you covered for me when I sneak a few minutes of rest,” he winks. “It’s about time I repaid the favour,” he snorts as they step outside.
“I hope this doesn’t mean you’re purposefully going to continue that habit,” she frowns, then lifts an eyebrow in warning.
He just laughs, and Riza thinks, dryly, that she doesn’t like the sound of that laugh. But the sound of it still makes her smile regardless, like always.

CHAPTER FIVE: ADJUSTMENTS
Tumblr media
Things had started to feel calmer now. Time had begun to slow down, and Frank was grateful for the chance to breathe again. One Saturday, he returned from the boat yard to change his oil-stained shirt and caught sight of Mary’s journal on the kitchen table – Evelyn had forced her into therapy back in Boston, and though she had hated it, journaling was the one thing she kept on doing – it had been left open on a page filled with tally marks. At the top of the page, she had written ‘number of days without Fred’. Frank pressed his palms against the table and dipped his head. Perhaps Mary would always struggle emotionally in one way or another. He was beginning to feel like a failure. Was his best really good enough? It was impossible to tell.
Sunday was just as quiet. They ate together in silence. Roberta didn’t visit. Their new normal was frustratingly abnormal.
“School tomorrow.” Frank cast a glance at Mary. “Homework done? Books ready?” He knew he didn’t need to ask, but he couldn’t stand the silence any longer.
Mary’s fork danced around her plate. “Obviously.” She huffed.
“Sorry, I was just asking.”
No reply.
Mary scrunched her nose and continued to pick at her plate, retreating back into her bubble.
“Listen,” Frank reached over and put a hand on her cold arm “I know things are hard right now. But if you talk about it, sometimes it makes things easier.”
“You sound like Evelyn.”
Frank’s shoulders dropped. “You don’t have to finish dinner, okay? You’re cold. I’m gonna go get you a sweater or something.”
“I’m fine.”
He ignored her and left the table. Mary pushed him away every time he tried to slip her arms into one of her hoodies. He fought back, not realizing how roughly he was holding her until she winced and slipped off the chair. He immediately swept her into his arms.
“I’m sorry.” He rocked her slightly. “You need to stop being so fucking stubborn, Mary.” His voice cracked a little. Her tiny hands squeezed him as hard as they could and she rested her head on his shoulder. When Mary started to cry, so did Frank. He pulled back, brushed a strand of hair from her face and laid his hands on her shoulders. “I’m trying my best here. You’ve gotta give me something, kiddo.”
Mary nodded, paused and then ruffled Frank’s hair. He returned the gesture and tucked her under his arm, carrying her across the kitchen and into the living room. She was laughing now. They both were. Mary dangled in his grip, arms limp, then tumbled down, grabbing his hands and stepping on his feet.
“Can we watch TV?” She looked up at him, the dewy sheen of tears beginning to fade from her eyes.
“Sure. But only for a little while. You’ve gotta get up early for school.”
Mary threw her head back and groaned. “Why can’t I just skip class tomorrow? Everybody hates me anyway.”
Frank tugged on her wrists. “Hey, nobody hates you, okay? They’re just jealous of how smart and awesome you are.”
“You have to say that, you’re my Uncle.”
“I’m also an adult, which believe it or not, means I actually know more than you do. About people, at least.”
“Yeah, you are kinda dumb…” She nodded.
“That’s it,” Frank picked her up “you just lost your extra hour of TV.”
In spite of his attempt at sternness, he let her fall asleep on the couch.
Tumblr media
Monday came, and Frank finally finished his work on the Celestia. One brief phone call later, he had been invited to join the owner for a trip out on the lake. Frank would usually have been cautious about this – especially with wealthy customers - but he accepted the offer simply because it would give him a chance to clear his head. It was better than sneaking onto someone else’s boat with a six-pack of Heineken at two in the morning, at least. As he wiped his hands on a worn rag, he reclined against the workbench in the corner of the garage. A soft ache spread through his chest. Deep into his biceps. Exhaustion snuck up on him without warning. The chaos of the past few months was finally catching up with him.
He waited so long for Mary to come home from school that he started to think maybe she’d gone on another adventure. His worries subsided when she arrived, shoulders pushed forward under the weight of her satchel. As she threw it down and began to unpack a stack of books, Frank realized exactly what had happened.
“Did you walk all the way from Jackson?”
“Yeah.” Mary squinted as she fumbled around for another book. “Lucy’s really nice. She let me take out a bunch of stuff.”
“She did, huh? Am I gonna be serving you dinner in your room tonight?” He half-joked.
Mary had already stopped listening. Frank shook his head and turned back to the stove to finish cooking. This time, eating in silence didn’t feel awkward – Mary brought a book to the table, fork occasionally missing her mouth as she sat absorbed in whatever it was she was reading. Frank pictured her walking down Jackson with her nose in another book and couldn’t help letting out a soft huff of amusement. She was almost happy. And at least for now, almost was enough.
When he checked on Mary, he peered into a room lit only by a small torch light. She was back in her reading tent. Even though the door squeaked slightly, she didn’t stir. Back in his own bedroom, Frank reached into his nightstand for his phone. Lucy would wake the next morning to a short, thankful text message.
Tumblr media
Frank and Mary, however, woke to a prolonged, impatient buzzing. The doorbell.
He was tempted to rub his eyes again when he saw the woman standing on the porch.
Evelyn.
Frank was immediately skeptical, but he opened the door to her anyway.
“Well,” she popped a hip and adjusted her sunglasses “are you going to ask me to come in or shall I just stand here on the porch?”
“Mary’s heading to school in a couple minutes.” His jaw tightened a little as he watched her fingers flex against the handle of her travel case. This wasn’t an impromptu visit.
“I’ll say hello quickly, then.” She barged past him, the wheels of her case narrowly missing his toes.
Mary had a piece of toast hanging out of her mouth and a book clutched to her chest. She covered her mouth as she hurriedly chewed and then walked around the kitchen island to meet Evelyn.
“Hello, darling.” Evelyn planted a kiss on the crown of Mary’s head, leaving a glossy pink mark in her hair. “Off to school?”
“Yep.” Mary replied, popping the ‘p’ curtly. “Are you staying with us?”
“Maybe. That depends on your uncle.” She inclined her head towards Frank in a way that she thought was comical, but it just made Mary cringe.
“Why?” She knelt down to shove the book she was holding into her satchel.
“That’s enough, short-stuff.” Frank intervened, steering her away from Evelyn. “Let’s go.”
“Have a good day, darling!” Evelyn called out, pivoting her suitcase so that it would fit flush against the wall.
Tumblr media
When Frank returned, he slammed the front door and crossed his arms as he glared down at Evelyn.
“Alright, what’s this about? What little scheme have you come up with now?”
Evelyn smoothed her sundress and shifted uncomfortably on the couch. “You’re so hostile.” She tutted.
“Can you blame me?” He strode over to her and perched on the arm of the couch.
“Not at all.” She clasped her hands in her lap and twisted herself to face him. “I wanted –“she stuttered, blinking “-needed to see my son and granddaughter.”
In that moment, Frank saw himself. The same sunken hopelessness. He noticed raw pink lines beneath her eyes. For the first time in a long time, Evelyn seemed human.
“This is about Diane isn’t it.”
“Yes. I couldn’t face another anniversary alone, Frank.”
“You called me Frank.” He mused. “Where’s the real Evelyn?”
She managed the smallest of smiles and reached out rub his arm. “I lost her a long time ago.” She was holding his hand now, squeezing lightly. “I won’t stay too long. I’m sure you must be busy.”
Frank placed his other hand over hers. “Stay as long as you want.”
“You don’t really mean that.” Her icy tone returned.
“I mean it.” He insisted. “It’ll be good for Mary.”
“How is she?”
“Honestly? She’s struggling. She’s stubborn about it, though.”
“I wonder where she gets that from…” Evelyn chuckled.
“She’s dealing with more than a kid should have to deal with right now. Losing Fred, the car accident…”
Evelyn’s head jerked to the side. “Car accident?”
“Don’t worry, Mary wasn’t in the car. It was just me. I was a little drunk, it was stupid.”
“For God’s sake, Francis!” Evelyn yelled. “You stupid boy!”
Francis. Boy. She was his mother again. Instead of fighting back, the ache he had felt earlier returned and he slumped against the cushions.
Tumblr media
“After it happened,” his breaths were shallow, a lump forming in his throat “I just sat there thinking about what would’ve happened if...” both his hands and his voice had begun to shake “I can’t take care of her. Not in the way she needs to be. Diane would be so fucking disappointed.”
Evelyn took Frank’s face in her hands and kissed his forehead. He buried his face in her shoulder and allowed her to be the mother she suddenly wanted to be.
“Diane would be very proud of you.” She glanced up at the ceiling, fighting back tears. “I’m proud of you, darling.” She whispered, brushing her fingers through his hair. “So proud of you.”
“I just want her to be okay.” He sniffled.
“She will be.” Evelyn turned to kiss Frank’s hair and then stood up, brushing a crease from the skirt of her dress. “Why don’t I cook dinner for us tonight? It’ll give you a chance to rest.”
Frank’s defenses were down, so he agreed.
That night, Evelyn made a shepherd’s pie and sat with Mary as she completed her homework. She piled chocolate ice cream into a bowl and made herself a martini. His mother was back, but she was still putting on the airs and graces of the woman she once was. He knew that if she didn’t, she would be more broken than she had been when she arrived. So he played pretend too.
Almost happy. Almost a family. And that would be just fine for now.

Build Me Up Buttercup *Part 3*
Yay I’m so happy people love this!
SUMMARY: Summary: You’re an SVU detective, the entire squad is all driving to Hartford Connecticut in your car to interview a victim's family. ROAD TRIP!!!!
If you need to catch up:
Part 1
Part 2
Part 4
Tag List: @wanniiieeee
“...So the last time you saw her was when you dropped her at school, Mrs. Fahey?” Olivia asked the distraught mother.
You and the squad had arrived at the victim’s house later than you had anticipated, sans lunch just like Rafael had predicted. You knew you should be paying attention to the interview, but your blood sugar was tanking by the minute. You tried distracting yourself by glancing at all the photos in the living room. Frames upon frames of the victim, a young 19 year old freshman to NYU, filled the room. Almost like they had made a shrine to her while she was still living. She was clearly their entire world, and now she was missing. Suddenly, all of your phones buzzed with notifications. It was a group text from Dodd’s.
“Oh no…” Amanda whispered.
“What? What happened? Did they find my Mary?” Mrs. Fahey frantically gripped Olivia’s hand.
“Ah….Mr. and Mrs. Fahey maybe we should go somewhere more private,” She replied.
“More private than my living room? You obviously all got the same news, so you might as well tell us here,” Mr. Fahey abruptly said.
“They...did find Mary,” Olivia simply stated. The Fahey's faces lit up for a moment, but then Olivia finished her sentence.
“....Her body was floating in the Hudson.”
That was it. You didn’t know if it was the exhaustion from getting up early and driving, or the fact that you hadn’t eaten more than a stick of gum since last night, but you felt sick to your stomach and your emotions were taking over. You stood up and tried discreetly walking out into the hall from the living room. You thought for half a second to ask where the Fahey’s bathroom was, but clearly now was not the time for that. You could find it yourself; you hoped.
Meanwhile, Barba had noticed you walking out, clearly in distress. His concerned look caught Amanda’s attention, who had also seen you leave. She shrugged at Barba, causing him to ask in a whisper:
“Should I go check on her?”
“Well you clearly want to, so yeah sure,” she whispered back.
“Rollins! She’s your partner!” he hissed.
“Something tells me she’d rather see you,” Amanda smirked.
What was that? Was it obvious he liked you? Was it obvious you liked him? There was no time to dwell on that drama, he was genuinely concerned about you.
He followed your exit out into the hallway, but you had vanished. He cautiously crept down the hallway until he saw a light under a door. As he approached it, he could hear soft sobs coming from the other side.
“....Y/N?”
Your head snapped up from staring at the floor, crying into your knees next to the bathtub. Shit, you had really tried to be discreet. Why did he follow you? This was totally unprofessional, you were sure of it. You stood up and tried wiping the smeared mascara and eyeliner from your teary eyes, but damn you and your love of the smoky eye! You looked like a drowned raccoon; This was a nightmare.
“I-I’m fine!” You called through the door, praying he’d walk away and he wouldn’t have to see your impression of the girl from THE RING.
“...You sure? I heard crying…”
Well, he sure wasn’t subtle, just a “state the facts” kinda guy. You kinda loved that about him, since you were the same way. And if you were being honest with yourself, the fact that he actually came to check on you made your stomach quiver. Okay, something lower quiver.
“Yeah I….stubbed my toe on the tub,” You called through the door, making a “What the fuck was that” face.
“....Yeah I doubt that. Come on just open the door, por favor,”
Oh God. When he used spanish, your knees went weak. Even if it was just a phrase you’d hear on a Rosetta Stone.
“Damn you,” You muttered, but complied with his request. The door peeked open just the tiniest bit so he could see your Picasso painting of a face.
“Oh my god, what happened to your face?!” He asked in a louder tone that caused you to freak out and pull him into the bathroom, slamming the door behind him.
“Did you skip sensitivity training in law school or what?” You half laughed with a sniffle; it actually felt good. It might have been just the thing to knock back you to reality.
“I’m sorry, I’m not so good with the...subtle,” He apologized with a sheepish smile.
“Yeah I got that; it’s fine. Neither am I,” You assured him with a soft punch on the shoulder.
“Ok but seriously what happened to your face, you look like La Llorna,” He chuckled, putting his hands on your face and attempting to wipe off the layers of black lining your eyelids.
“Again, so comforting,” You rolled your eyes as he picked up a washcloth next to the sink and wet it to help the situation.
“You’re deflecting, detective,”  he raised an eyebrow as he put the washcloth to your eye. His gentle touch and the warm feel of the washcloth suddenly did actually feel extremely comforting.
“I...I’m just tired,” you lied. Well, in a way it was true.
Rafael’s eyebrow remained raised; that’s exactly what he had said earlier, instead of telling you how he really felt. He was sure you were doing it now.
“Being tired makes you burst into tears?”
“You’ve never been so tired you wanted to cry? Not even in law school?” it was your turn to raise your eyebrow.
“Alright, maybe ONCE in law school....but I waited until I was in the privacy of my own dorm,” He chuckled, you rolled your eyes.
“So…?”
“I just…..” you took a long, hard pause letting out a breath you didn’t realize you were holding in. Were you seriously going to do this now? This of all times, of all people, Rafael Barba? Two hours ago you were convinced he hated you, and had probably spoken a total of two sentences in your career at SVU. But at the same time, for whatever reason, you felt completely safe with him. You took another deep breath in and finally spoke:
“It’s just...this girl; Mary. She was just a young girl, she had everything going for her! She was beautiful, smart, obviously worshipped by her parents by that shrine out there,”  you gestured towards where you both had just come from.
“And...and she makes ONE bad decision, one. One moment of wanting to be accepted by the ‘cool kids’ at school by going to a frat party, and it….” you felt a sob catch in your throat.
“...It cost her her life,” you whispered softly.
“Ay….carino, come here,” Rafael sighed and pulled you into his arms, stroking your hair. You both just stayed like that for what felt like forever, but instantaneously you both realized this had gotten insanely intimate for two co workers who barely knew each other. He dropped his arms and cleared his throat, you quickly began running your fingers through your hair as you turned to face the mirror, away from his gaze. God, please. Be more awkward.
“I didn’t want to start losing it out there in front of her parents, they literally just lost their most prized possession. This can’t be about me,” You sighed as you turned back to face him.
“It’s stupid...I’m stupid. I shouldn’t let shit like this get to me, it’s totally unprofessional I know,”
“...No it’s not, it’s fine, You’re human,” He assured you, putting a thumb under your chin making you look into his deep green eyes
“Barba? Y/N? Did you get locked in there?”
Sonny’s voice knocked you both from each other’s stare, your faces both turning red. Rafael threw the door open and let you exit in front of him.
“I got sick, Rafael held my hair,” you quickly blurted out, both men’s eyes widened in surprise.
“Oh. Well, um….Mr. Barba is quite the gentleman,” He looked at Barba trying to hide a disgusted face; thinking about vomit made him queasy. “You ok now?”
“Yeah! Fine, hungry actually,” You half smiled as they followed you to the front door where the others were waiting,
“I’m so, so sorry again Mr. and Mrs. Fahey,” Olivia held Mrs. Fahey’s hand. “You take as long as you need to before coming to the city to…”
“Identify our daughter’s body, detective. No use pussyfooting around it.” Mr. Fahey was blunt once again.
“Right,” Olivia nodded.
“I’ll take the morning off tomorrow, we’ll be by then,” he replied gruffly.
“Okay. Whenever. No Rush,” Olivia waved one last time as the door closed. You all walked silently to the car, you broke it with a deep sigh.
“....Does that ever get any easier?” You asked, looking at each face of the members of your squad.
“Honestly? If you're a good cop, no.” Fin replied.
“The day you stop caring is the day you should quit.” Sonny added.
“God I’m starving, can we please get food? And drinks?” Amanda whined.
“Well, I sure could use a drink! Or five,”  you laughed.
“That’s another thing to watch out for, rookie,” Fin paused, taking your shoulder.
“What’s that?”
“Don’t drown your problems in a bottle, That can go downhill real fast,” Fin warned.
“That’s why it’s super important to have a squad you can trust. That you can talk to,” Olivia came up and put her hand on your other shoulder.
“Well, so far so good,” you half smiled.
“Seriously guys, can we get some food? Barba’s starting to look like a rotisserie chicken right now,” Sonny licked his lips.
“Alright alright Carisi, get in the car ya five year old,” Fin punched him in the arm.
As you went to the driver’s side of the car, Rafael stopped next to you.
“Do you want me to drive?” He offered. You usually never let anyone touch your baby, but you literally felt as if you could pass out just standing there.
“Please,” You smiled, tossing him your keys.
You got in your passenger’s seat and closed your eyes, finally relaxing for the first time since you left the City.
What awaited you on the other side of your nap?

A/N: I was feeling sad so I turned it into a fic??? I’m not tagging anyone because I haven’t done an updated taglist in so long and don’t want to tag anyone who isn’t interested in reading! Also thanks for 600 followers?!?!?

Warnings: angst with a happy ending <3
Her third year residency was supposed to be exciting and instead, she found herself dreading to go into work. She rather not see her boyfriend, or whatever they were, reminiscing about some place she assumed he used to go to with his ex who she just so happened to respect. It was hard not to let her feelings come between her work.
But the thing that really upset her the most, was how easily Ethan talked about their personal history while at work. The man who separated his personal and professional life with ease had no problem talking to his ex-girlfriend about anything besides medicine.
She felt left out of their conversations, she felt inferior when she was in the same room as them and that’s why whenever she got the chance, she was the first to leave after a meeting and it went unnoticed by him.
A fight was bound to break out at some point and it did.
Ethan was supposed to be picking her up in a couple hours for dinner but she just didn’t feel up to going so she ended up canceling. He called a few minutes later to check on her.
“Are you okay?” He asked, his voice laced with concern.
“Yeah, I’m fine.”
“Why don’t you want to go to dinner then?”
“Because I have an early shift tomorrow morning and I’m tired,” she replied, a hint of aggravation in her voice. She did not want to have this conversation right now, instead she rather be curled up in a ball on her bed with a carton of ice cream.
“You don’t have an early shift tomorrow, Allison. Now, what’s really going on?”
Crap, she thought, completely forgetting he was the one who made her schedule. “Look, Ethan, I gotta go. Sienna needs me,” she said, silently hoping that he didn’t catch her lie. “I’ll talk to you later,” she added before hanging up, not giving him a chance to respond.
She sank back into the couch cushions, her limbs too exhausted to carry her into her room. She must’ve dozed off because the next thing she knew there was someone knocking at the door. Her feet begrudgingly treaded to the door and to her surprise, Ethan was standing outside with us hands in his pockets and hair dripping wet. She didn’t even know it had started to pour.
“What are you doing here?”
“We need to talk,” was all he said. The infamous phrase was sure to interrupt whatever plans she had for the rest of the night. She moved to the side of the door to let him pass through. She was thankful that all her roommates had to work tonight and they could talk alone.
Crossing her arms protectively across her chest, she decided to ask another question. “Can it wait until the morning?”
“No.”
“No?” She asked in disbelief.
“No,” he replied firmly. “Something is obviously bothering you and for this to work, we need to be able to communicate with each other.”
“What is ‘this?’ Because honestly, Ethan, you haven’t put a label on us. Whenever I try bringing it up, you always change the subject or you conveniently get a page. You were able to be honest with Harper, why can’t you be honest with me?”
“What does Harper have to do with this?”
“Why is Harper the only thing you got from what I just said?” That stung a bit. “What am I to you, Ethan? Am I your girlfriend? Just someone you fuck on occasion? A co-worker? Because this wondering, it’s exhausting. It is mentally draining and you don’t even notice it. You’re too busy talking to Harper about what you two used to do together to even notice when I walk into the office.”
“Is this really all about Harper?” He said, astounded.
“You know what, yes, it is about Harper. You used to be so hell bent on professionalism in the hospital, that’s why we had to hide that we were fucking for two years, but now? Now you don’t even care anymore.”
“Harper is just a friend, we have his-“
“History, I know,” she said, cutting him off. But what am I?”
He stood there, mouth agape and utterly speechless. “You’re… important to me,” he internally winced at how it sounded. It had sounded better in his head which is where it probably should’ve stayed.
“I’m important to you? That’s it? That’s all I get?” Tears pricked her eyes but she refused to let him see her cry, to let him see how much of an effect he had on her.
“I- well you’re more than important to me, I just…” Come on, Ramsey, just tell her that you love her, he scolded himself.
But the words never came. The room was deafening quiet with only the sound of thunder and the pitter patter of the rain outside against the windows. They stood there facing each other, eyes glued to one another before she turned her head to look out one of the windows. When she looked at him again, he noticed her eyes glistening with unshed tears and his throat constricted knowing he was the reason behind them.
“I… I don’t think this is going to work anymore. It hasn’t been working for a long time and I looked past it, too afraid to admit it to myself. Too afraid to see that the man I love, doesn’t love me back.”
Now is the time to tell her how you really feel, she just told you she loves you, he thought but still, the words didn’t come. They were locked deep down in his heart, with no key to open it.
“Allison…”
“I think you need to leave,” she said quietly, her voice breaking slightly. When she saw he was about to protest, she asked again. “Please, I’m going to start crying and I really need you to not see me crying right now.”
“I understand,” and against his heart screaming to not leave her, his brain told him to respect her wishes. With one last glance at her, he walked out the door and after he heard the lock click, he rested his forehead against the door and within seconds the sound of her sobs filled the empty apartment and he swore he felt his stomach drop.
His own tears fell as he headed back to his car and when he got in, he immediately started to regret his decisions over the last couple months. He didn’t even realize what he had been doing but it all made sense now and he couldn’t even be upset with her. He would’ve felt the same way if he was in her shoes and it put things into perspective.
He decided he would talk to her tomorrow, tell her how he truly felt and hope it would be enough.
After a sleepless night for both of them, Ethan and Allison arrived earlier than usual at the hospital, inevitably running into each other. Awkward glances ensured but before anything could be said, Allison disappeared down the hall.
He let out a frustrated sigh, it was going to be a long day.
Ethan walked into the Diagnostics office where Harper was already seated with two cups of coffee, one in his place and the other in Allison’s.
“Good morning,” she smiled brightly. “Where’s Allison?”
“Uh, she should be here soon.”
She raised a brow in confusion. “Is everything okay?”
Allison chose that time to make her entrance into the office. “Sorry for being late, what did I miss?”
“Nothing, we were waiting for you to arrive,” Harper answered, casting a glance between the two. Something was definitely going on.
Ethan briefed them on the patient arriving from Alaska with a sudden onset of mysterious symptoms. Afterwards, Allison wasted no time in excusing herself from the team to go check on their patient.
Harper noticed the longing look on Ethan’s face as he watched her leave. “What’s going on, Ethan? Did something happen between you and Allison?”
“You could say that,” he admitted.
“What did you do?”
Her question surprised him. “What? What do you mean ‘what did I do?’”
“Don’t play dumb with me, Ramsey. There’s nothing that woman wouldn’t do for you or for your relationship. Please don’t tell me you did something to mess up what is quite possibly the best thing that has ever happened to you.”
“...I love her,” he muttered under his breath.
“What?” She asked, not hearing him.
“I love her, Harper but I don’t know how to tell her. I’ve never told someone that before and it scares the hell out of me. She told me she loved me last night and I didn’t… I didn’t say anything, I couldn’t say anything. We had a fight and she wanted to know what we are and I don’t know what that is. All I know is that I love her and she’s it for me but how do I tell her that? How do I tell her that I love her so much that it terrifies me? How do I give into my fear that it won’t work out, that she’ll figure out that I’m not what she wants after all?”
“You just did,” she smiled softly, pointing her head to behind him where he turned around to see Allison standing in the doorway.
“I, uh, forgot the file and was coming back to get it,” she stammered out.
“I’ll let you two be,” Harper said, excusing herself but not before whispering to Ethan, “don’t mess this up.” She gave Allison a smile before heading out the door.
“Did you hear all of that?” Ethan asked, breaking the silence between them, his face a shade of crimson.
“Only if you meant it. If not, then no, I have selective hearing which is why I always only hear half of what you say at these boring team meetings when it’s not about patients,” she joked, trying to lighten the mood and it worked because Ethan let out a chuckle.
“I did mean it,” he said, his face turning serious once more. “I’m sorry it took so long for me to admit it and I know you deserved better than that but I’m just… I’m just scared.”
“What scares you?”
“I’ve never felt this way about someone and it was easy for my mom to leave me, the woman who gave birth to me left me without a second thought, and what would stop you? What if you found someone better than me or someone who is younger and can give you everything that I can’t… that’s what scares me,” he said taking a shaky breath, finally opening up to her.
She closed the distance between them, taking his hand in hers. “I don’t want anyone except for you, Ethan. You are exactly what I want, you’re it for me,” she smiled, repeating his words from earlier. “And I’m promising you right now that I will never leave. Pinky promise,” she laughed, holding out her pinky to him and he interlocked them together. “I don’t break pinky promises Dr. Ramsey and I hope you don’t either.”
“I pinky promise not to break our pinky promise.”
“Good because that would suck,” he laughed at her bluntness.
“I know. Thank you, Allie.”
“For what?”
“For not giving up on me or us.”
“Speaking of, what exactly are we?” She nervously asked.
“Will you do me the honor of being my girlfriend, Allison Parker?”
“I’m sorry, I only heard the part where you said to do you,” she winked at him, earning a laugh from him. “You know, selective hearing and all, but yes, I will be your girlfriend or whatever.”
“Ahh the words to my heart,” he said sarcastically.
“Aww you know you love me.”
“I do,” they shared a smile before he pulled her to him, placing his hands on the small of her back while hers wrapped behind his neck. The embrace was warm and familiar. “I love you,” he whispered, placing a kiss to her head and she just smiled against his chest, the words setting in for them both.
The words were a promise for the future.

KAEYA PLAYING WITH ABYSS MAGES AHDHSHDHSB IM- that’s so cute????? Guizhong being older than Zhongli is such a valid hc, I fully support and condone it. Thank you. And Childe growing to like battle was something I found interesting because he was once mentioned to be fragile and weak in his character stories iirc? I like to think that maybe the initial reason he persevered was to overcome that past status.
Also, YES. They’d have the worst habits, and it would eventually become more visible the more comfortable it becomes, but Keqing just gives up on trying to change anything because it’s literally hopeless.
I also headcanon that they have different ways to show appreciation for Keqing. E.g. Childe sometimes uses one of his cringy ass Russian nicknames and when she looks up the meaning, she turns from the most straight-faced woman known to man to a highkey affection-starved queen self-destructing in her room.
Diluc leaves a note on her desk that are simple “Sleep early today. Tomorrow is your day-off.” or “Don’t over work yourself.” messages. He’s so self-conscious about it because like, what if Kaeya catches him up at night contemplating whatever reaction he’ll get. Ends up feeling so accomplished whenever his messages bring a smile to her face.
Kaeya, I feel, would be more open in a sense? Keqing is the last person he thinks he’s be able to deceive, and so he chooses not to. He’s probably one who enjoys deep conversations about literally anything be it mosaic artwork or changes in between modern and archaic politics. A good listener and a fine conversation partner, I feel they’d certainly have interesting conversations.
Zhongli lowkey seizing every opportunity to bring up Rex Lapis and his sense of humor is lowkey degrading Morax for his past mistakes. He’s like “Oh, I thought you hated him. I hate him too” and proceeds to laugh at the fact that the oh-so legendary Geo archon bore a hole in his hoodie for his hair. FOR HIS HAIRS. Keqing is losing her sanity trying not to expose herself as a closeted fan.
The anon lists’ name is super cute btw! Makes me feel pretty blessed for being there haha. I just finished midterms and goodness, I am exhausted. We’re having a short break so I think I can send asks much faster during the brief moment of rest. And pls drink responsibly 🙏
Sincerely, Keqing harem brainrot anon
I lowkey plucked Kaeya playing with mobs and shoved it into the royalty au because god damn, that’s fucking cute. I’m so behind on my asks;; but it’s okay cause we’re here now. I don’t know, Guizhong being that older sister/mother/whatever figure is so heartwarming to me. I think you’re right? I vaguely remember him saying he was pretty fragile but I have the memory of a goldfish haha. Lowkey, this is why I really want the part 2 and 3 of character story quests to go more in depth with their actual character stories. I want to see Childe talk about his feelings and meet his siblings, I want to hear more about Guizhong, I want to hear about the crippling loneliness and depression that Bennett and Barbara have (NO I WILL NOT SHUT UP ABOUT THIS PART. WHY THE FUCK IS GENSHIN NOT TALKING ABOUT THIS? I KNOW ITS FUN AND GAMES BUT LET ME CARE ABOUT THEM. 1.4 has these hangout events and istg, bennett and barabara have one and if we don’t talk about our feelings I’m going to cry).
oml their bad habits, Zhongli and his extensive collection of plants because that’s the most social interaction he gets (yes, zhongli is a planter. no i do not take criticism tyvm) and it starts off with a couple plants. Not too bad. Then the next day Keqing walks and it looks like their entire home turned into a forest. But Zhongli loves his plant children and Keqing is slowly losing her mind and starts referring to the plants with the nicknames Zhongli gave them.
This. This is cute. These appreciation ideas. I fully approve and we need to bring them back. I don’t know anything about Russian but I have a friend that does. But I don’t know how to casually say “hey, can you give me Russian nicknames of endearment. It’s for research.”. Keqing radiates professional in the front, social anxiety in the back. I just love that they added the detail that she’s secretly a Rex Lapis fan but pretends that she hates him. I know there is art of Zhongli lowkey being creeped out or vv smug when he find’s Keqings stash but idk, imagining him being a proud dad and giving headpats even though Keqing is an adult.
Okay. Let me level with you. Sticky notes of reassuring phrases are the best and why the fuck aren’t people doing it more. I’ve been reading “my mom left a note on the table” or “my partner puts sticky notes in my textbooks as a pick me up” for CENTURIES but am I seeing it in real life? Fuck no. Please, if someone does this for you. Keep them, never let them go. I can imagine Diluc writing these messages, feeling confident when he writes them and ready to be a supportive person. The next day he’s looking at these notes and thinking “what the fuck did I just write, this is garbage” (totally not how I feel about my writing). Then he proceeds to throw them in some cabinet but since Kaeya doesn’t know the first thing about personal boundaries he goes snooping around in Diluc’s room, discovers the notes, and he ends up taking them and putting them on Keqing’s things. It makes her happy so Diluc is going to ignore the very pressing issue with whether or not he should commit manslaughter.
You know, that’s very valid. That’s how I feel about Kaeya’s relationship with Lisa or Albedo. People that don’t get riled up or annoyed by his antics the same way Amber is. I feel like if you’re looking for small talk, he’s not a bad choice, but if you want those deep 3am conversations he’s definitely the person to go to. Zhongli isn’t a bad choice either but Zhongli tends to go into historical and philosophical moments (which isn’t bad) but you want to have someone relate to you or it feels like an actual conversation and not a history lesson then he’s actually perfect. Especially more controversial topics, I feel like Kaeya would probably have very different opinions from the norm.
YES. YES. YES I’m replying to these as I read them but YES. Honestly, I get it. Zhongli is a super polite and respectable person. But. But. Have you seen how he clowned on Childe?? That entire interaction?? He didn’t even look the slightest big apologetic for almost destroying Liyue and using the man who was going to kill him to pay for his funeral. What a power move?? And you’re telling me you don’t see him being a smug prick. I love Zhongli’s story quest where everyone is saying “oh the first mora was treasured or it holds mythical powers” and Zhongli is looking at them as if they’re idiots.
tyty (❤´艸`❤) I’m blessed to have you here. Oh, I hope you did well on your midterms tho and be sure to rest. I am a bit late to replying to this so hopefully I caught you before your break was over.
Always lovely hearing from you,
Pengu

OH MY GOD! ITS HAPPENING! Its only the summary and I’m emo 😂 I should be studying for my exams, but I have tomorrow for that ;)
Ok, lets do this:
UDHWIJSHW THEY ARE SO CUTE FOR EACH OTHER I CANT-
"He preferred to hide his heart away. But he couldn’t hide David. He didn’t want to. David deserved to be seen." Like father like son. Both speeking poetry about their love ones. (and no, Idk which father I'm talking about 😂)
“I don’t think they are fake dating,” David hummed from the other end. “You don’t talk for hours every night if you are just fake dating.” (THANK YOU DAVID! SOMEONE THAT ITS NOT BLIND)
"They like doing chores. Let them do it. They fight demons all day and then come home and do chores. I feel like it’s their form of therapy. They need this.”“So, by not helping them, we are technically helping them?” Bapa had asked and Max had nodded with a grin. “Shadowhunters are weird.” “True dat,” Max had laughed. They were all weirdos. But Max loved them anyway. He loved his weird shadowhunters. (The domesticity lf this is killing me in a good way🥺)
“Will you on a date with me? Tomorrow?” Max asked then – because why the hell not. (Hell yeah Max. Go big or go home babe😎)
“This date is going to be the best first date in the history of first of dates.” In retrospect, he really shouldn’t have said that. (I'm already feeling his chaotic ass will do something like Magnus did, but lets keep hope)
"Maybe Lexi and Liv would probably enjoy a date – a fake date - in the arcade." Could I be more in love with both of them?? Is that physically possible?? 💙
Elyaas giving Max dating advice!! Lmaooo 😂😂
"His parents would not be pleased if they knew Max was summoning demons for relationship advice. But they had also encouraged Max to make friends with everyone regardless of their identity. So, technically this was their fault. They gave him very mixed messages."  YOU LIL SHIT. YOU ARE NOT WRONG THO...
FUCK. An attack??
You lil shit Max.
Yep, Rafael has to deal with it everyday 😂
OOMG YESS. THE ALIANCE RUNE!!
"So, when he got tired, he would simply fix the problem by eating. It was a win-win to be honest." I feel like I should say something, but tbh it makes sense
Ok, this fight is intense
Wait. Anjali is there???  What?
Oh ok, it wasn’t
“Say the thing!”Rafael groaned and raised his hands, the alliance rune lighting up.“I’m not just a shadowhunter,” Rafael said through gritted teeth. “I’m Magnus Bane’s son.” I'm dead 😂
THAT SCENE WAS EVERYTHING. LOVE THOSE TWO
“Well, demons are stupid,” Max pointed out. “Yeah, that makes sense,” Rafael said with a mouthful of food. “You are half demon after all.” “Asshole,” Max laughed and punched his brother.
“Text dad we are okay,” Rafael said, slowly recovering. “They will worry.”Max nodded and did that. (This just summ up sibling relationships so well *chef kiss*)
“It can be hard, Max. Bapak and dad…Sometimes I look at them and feel like I will never have what they have.” YUP. THEY HAVE SIBLINGS DYNAMIC. ALSO RAFAEL IS JUST 🥺🥺🥺
David got wounded???
Oh ok. False alarm.
Rafael sat down next to him and put Bapak’s head on his lap, gently massaging it.
“Are you okay?” dad knelt down next to his husband. “Just a little tired,” Bapak replied.A little tired. Max knew Bapak was fucking exhausted."  "Bapak never showed it. He never complained. Max wondered what else he hid away from everyone else." “Okay,” dad whispered and kissed his husband on the head. “Get some rest, my love.” Bapak nodded and closed his eyes as Rafael hummed something softly. (Well, now I'm crying 😭😭)
" His niece found an herbal medication that helps with the pain.” ANJALI!! I LOVE HER💙💙
"Dad finally smiled and went out to the balcony, phone in hand. He seemed to hang out in the balcony a lot lately" No no no. I dont like this. Babe find a better copying mechanism!!
"Bapak smiled then. A brilliant grin. The one dad probably fell in love with." jsyeihdiej I cant🥺💙
"Bapak sniffed when dad sat down next to him and gave him an odd look. But he didn’t say anything." Magnus tell him something. I dont like where this is going😭
“Does that mean Bapak is a capitalist?” Max asked. “Do not drag me into this!” Bapak protested and dad laughed at that" Ahh yess. Typical family discussions 😂
"David: Mr Herondale yelled “Yes! Two out of three!” (😂😂 I HONESTLY LAUGHED WAY TO HARD!!)
“Well, no! I don’t want drama. But I want you to be dramatic so I can tell you not to be dramatic!” I would like to say WHAT? but I honestly get it 😂
“Also, we all know you had an embarrassing crush on Uncle Jace growing up,” Rafael snickered. “And you definitely still have a crush on Uncle Jem.” Oh god 😂😂 but I mean... Who doesn't have a crush on Jem?
“Oh yeah?” Max demanded. “Well then let me explain your type. You are probably going to fall for someone who is like a combination of Aunt Izzy and Aunt Lily! Some femme fatale type who is a heartbreaker and looks like a supermodel and-” Boy got it right huh? 😂
“You two are dating?” dad demanded. “Since when? Who else knows about this? Why didn’t you tell us before? Were you dating when you were in London? Magnus, did you know about this?” “There you go!” Max yelled triumphantly. “That’s the dramatic reaction I was looking for. Thanks, dad!” lmaooo 😂😂
"And that’s how the next hour turned out to be the most painful and most embarrassing hour of his life." I. I have no words
“I’ll have you know this conversation utterly traumatized me. I demand financial compensation.” “Not happening,” dad said into his coffee, and Max groaned before walking back into his room. (THAT FAMILY 😂😂)
" I tried to hurt your father once.” OH no, the angst is coming
" He didn’t know about this. He knew about their story. Everyone did. The accords hall kiss. The fight in Edom. The changing of the law. Their love was legendary. Not this!" THIS IS BRINGING BACK SO MANY FLASHBACKS
“All I know is that I was terrified. I love your father. I love Magnus more than anything in the world. And I didn’t want to lose him. And I didn’t know what to do.” 😭😭 NOT AGAIN!!
"When you love someone so much, sometimes you do crazy things.” THIS
" Love had made a fool out of them. Love had made them blind." Yup. tsc: a summary
"When you love someone, you have to be honest with them" And THAT is character development!!
"They called it The Jem effect." I'm using this from now on 😂💙💙
"Uncle Jem was wearing a tank top and and ripped jeans." So its time for SIMP over Jem Carstairs? Okey then.
"In fact, he used to have a crush on both Tessa and Jem. It’s how he had found he was bisexual." Same here 😂
“MINA! I SWEAR TO LILITH I AM GOING TO GET YOU BACK FOR THIS!” OH MY GOD I LOVE MINA!!
“In my defense, I was busy!!” “Oooo, someone has been getting busy!” Mina WINKED. (You lil shit! I love her 💙)
He didn’t know he could blush!!!
" They had gone to hell and back for Roman. It wouldn’t have been possible if not for Catarina. She was, and always has been, a miracle worker." Again, I love my queen💙💙
“I believe in Mavid supremacy.” ME TOO
"There is something so queer about Ferris wheels!" Someone needed to say this
"They had their own space in the spiral fucking labyrinth. These fucking legends." I BELIEVE IN WARLOCK TEAM SUPREMACY
"But Ragnor had always had a soft spot for Rafael." 🥺🥺
I love my warlock squad so much I cant-
Ragnor is so done😂
“I don’t want to lose him,” Max said it out loud for the first time. “But you will, Max,” Catarina said gently. “Everyone loses people they love. Every day. It’s how life works.” (its to early to be crying)
“Yes, we do,” Ragnor replied. “But it also means we fall in love over and over. Century after century. It’s our blessing.” (these warlocks are just to perfect)
“And that love is going to last for a lifetime,” Tessa said softly. “Can you imagine that? Someone loving you for centuries. Someone remembering you for eternity. Doesn’t that sound wonderful?” 🥺🥺
David deserved to be loved like that – endlessly and impossibly. (OK BUT THE PARALLEL)
Tessa should definetly write a guidebook
“Je t’aime à la folie,” Max said.David’s eyes widened. “Vraiment?“ "Je t’aime. Je t’aime de toute mon âme. Je t’aime pour toujours.” ( I literally screamed and woke up my sister, I just love them so much!!!)
"David smiled. The smile Max fell in love with" 🥺🥺
“I know I am not your forever and I am okay with that.” Max bit his lip. “Okay.” “But you are mine,” David said. “You know that, right?” (ksidjdldk its just all this was beautiful!)
“I got it all planned,” Max said – for someone who had no idea what he was going to do." (Me as I should be studying 😂)
" And you were just scared. You were just a kid." “I just…I just realized you might not have had that when you were growing up – that there might not have been people you could talk to about these things.” THAT!! LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK!
"Max pulled him closer and kissed him again. Every kiss a promise. A promise to love. A promise to fight. A promise to survive" I would die for this two
OMG he took him to the Celestial Palace!! Thats so perfect and 🥺🥺
“Oh mon dieu! Ceci est incroyable! Il y a tellement de livres! Oh mon dieu! Je l'aime tellement!”💙💙 Idk how you manage to make me love David even more
“Of course he doesn’t hate you!” Max chuckled. “But he did say he will put your nerd ass in the silent city if you don’t bring me home by 11.” David blinked. “You’re joking, right?” “Of course,” Max grinned. His father had actually said that but there was no need to scary poor David any further. (😂😂 Imagine having the Consul as father-in-law, poor David)
“Yeah, not good with words my ass,” Exactly!! They say they are not good with words and procede to recite poetry of their love one??!!
Ughh I love this chapter so much and I loved how they deal with the inmortality thing! I just love when people comunicate and talk to each other! THATS A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP! And how they didn't repeat Alec and Magnus mistake. I just love it! *chef kiss*
Anyway, this was really long and it took to open notes to fullfill, so i'll just leave💙💙
Bro I just felt like I read the whole chapter again and I am feels. I AM FEELS SEND HELP. Not me catching feels over my own shit lmaooooo.

Kim Namjoon:
He had a feeling that there was something important that he was missing but he couldn’t pinpoint exactly what it was. BTS had been working hard on their next comeback and as the leader he felt he had the most responsibility. He blamed the nagging feeling as stress and did his best to ignore it as he tried to focus on work. Unfortunately for Namjoon, the thing that he was forgetting just so happend to be your birthday. You understood the stress that your boyfriend was under and tried your best to support him so you weren’t too mad when you didn’t wake up to balloons and streamers decorating the house. The least he could have done was send you a text though, yet none of the happy birthday messages you received were from him. In fact, you hadn’t heard anything from Namjoon for the past week. You were disappointed, but didn’t want to let him ruin your day so you got dressed and went to spend the day with your friends, at least they remembered. The day was quite eventful and you ended up having a lot of fun, though you couldn’t stop the disappointment at the fact that your boyfriend wasn’t celebrating with you. There was a part of you that hoped he would be there to at least spend the evening with you but that hope disappeared when you walked into an empty apartment. Namjoon had actually forgotten your birthday. You physically deflated as you went to get ready for bed, taking a long shower and changing into your pajamas before realizing that he still hadn’t come home. Now you were upset, grabbing your phone to call him and demand an explanation. As expected, he didn’t answer, and after a few more tries you gave up and left him a voicemail ranting on how he forgot on top of ignoring you for a week. You were honestly starting to feel like he didn’t care anymore. After hanging up, you turned off your phone and got into bed, wanting to sleep off your frustrations. Namjoon had been so caught up in work that he fell asleep at the studio, meaning he didn’t see your message until the following morning. The second he heard your disappointed voice reminding him about your birthday he cursed and tossed his phone down. He knew he was forgetting something but how could he have been so careless. After failing to get ahold of you he grabbed his things and rushed out of the building, stopping to grab you flowers and your favorite candy before heading over to your apartment. As soon as you opened the door he was pulling you into a tight hug and apologizing for his ignorance.
“I knew I was forgetting something jagi, I am so sorry! I promise I’ll make it up to you! I’ll take the next few days off and spoil you like the princess you are how does that sound?”
Tumblr media
Kim Seokjin:
Jin knew that your guys’ anniversary was coming up. He already had your present and was planning to get home early and make dinner for you so the two of you could celebrate once you got home from work. He had everything planned out, from what he would make you to when he would give you your present. The one thing he didn’t remember? The day that he was actually supposed to do all of this. With BTS constantly working on new projects, there was rarely a free moment in their schedule and somehow Jin had managed to get the days mixed up. He thought your anniversary was the weekend and didn’t realize that it was actually today, so he thought nothing of it when the guys all decided to go out to eat once they got a free moment. You had already been having a rough day because of work, it seemed that nothing you did was right and your boss loved to remind you of that. Still, the thought of celebrating your anniversary kept you going and you were more than ready to spend the evening relaxing with your boyfriend. To your surprise however, the apartment was empty when you got home which you thought was odd since Jin had promised that he would be home in time to celebrate with you. At first you thought that maybe something came up and he had to stay late, checking your phone to see if he had texted you, but there was nothing. Now worried that something might have happened, you quickly hit the call button and began pacing around the room as you waited for him to pick up.
“Hello?”
“Jin? Is everything alright? You were supposed to be home by now?” you asked frantically, there was silence from the other end as Jin tried to figure out what you were talking about.
“Everything's fine, the members all wanted to go out to eat, sorry I thought I texted you.” You almost dropped the phone when you heard that, realization setting in that he had forgotten your anniversary. “Jagi? Are you there?” you said nothing in reply and hung up the phone. Tears silently ran down your cheeks as you walked to the bathroom to get ready for bed, wanting nothing more than for the day to be over. He promised you that he would be home? How could he have forgotten?
Meanwhile Jin was blowing up your phone with messages asking you what was wrong and if you were okay. You had suddenly hung up and weren’t answering him and he was worried. It finally hit him when he looked back through his notifications and saw the alert he had made to remind him of the day, guilt crashing over him and tears clouding his vision as he begged the date to change. He had forgotten, he had everything planned so perfectly and he ruined it. He immediately rushed home, grabbing your present and walking to your guys’ shared bedroom, praying you would let him make it up to you. Jin sat beside you and placed a hand on your shoulder as he handed you the small box.
“I am so sorry baby. I didn’t forget I swear, I had everything planned but got the dates mixed up. Look, I have your present right here and tomorrow I’ll treat you to dinner okay? Please forgive me!”
Tumblr media
Min Yoongi:
It was your two year anniversary with Yoongi and you had everything planned out perfectly. Reservation for a nice restaurant, check. Brand new dress that you bought specifically for this occasion, check. The new headphones he had been eyeing since their release, check. More potential surprises for where the night may lead, check. Yoongi had been working hard on his new mixtape which made you even more excited for this date, you two hadn’t been able to spend time together in weeks and you knew he needed to take a break from his work. You had told Yoongi about the reservation every day leading up to your anniversary, and every time he promised he would be there and would recite the time back to you. Yet, when the time actually came, Yoongi was nowhere to be seen. You were all dressed up, sitting in the middle of the restaurant waiting for your boyfriend who was yet to show up. At first you tried to give him the benefit of the doubt, maybe he had just got stuck in traffic or something came up at the studio. After 15 minutes with no sign of him and questioning looks from your server, you decided to text him.
‘I’m at the table, are you almost here?’
‘Hello?’
‘Our reservation was 30 minutes ago! Where are you?’
‘I’m starting to get weird looks.’
‘Yoongi!’
‘Answer me!’
‘I’m going home...’
Humiliated and furious, you quickly paid for your drink and left the restaurant, trying to ignore all the sympathetic stares from other diners. Yoongi had promised he would be there and yet he stood you up! He hadn’t even read your messages. Tears clouded your vision as you tried to focus on the road, wanting nothing more than to crawl into bed and sleep until this became a bad dream. You hadn’t expected to find Yoongi home already, curled up in your shared bed and fast asleep. The sight only upset you further as you quickly changed, took off your makeup, and went to sleep on the couch, you didn’t want to be near him.
Yoongi was confused when he woke up alone the next morning, you always slept in with him on your days off. He had come home exhausted the night before and passed out before realizing that you weren’t home, so he hadn’t realized anything was wrong. Still confused, he reached for his phone and that was when he saw the messages you sent him. “Shit,” your anniversary, it had completely slipped his mind. Yoongi ran a hand over his face in anger before jumping out of bed to go find you, hoping you were home so he could apologize. He was both relieved and heartbroken to see you asleep on the couch, dried tears staining your cheeks. Guilt continued to eat at him as he slowly approached you, finally breaking down once he noticed your present for him sitting on the table beside you. Letting out a quiet sob, he threw himself onto the couch and hugged you tightly, waking you up in the process.
“I’m such an ass, I promised I would be there and I wasn’t. I’m sorry baby, we’ll go out now! I’ll do anything you want just please don’t hate me. I love you so much I swear!”
Tumblr media
Jung Hoseok:
Since Hoseok would be on tour during your actual birthday, the two of you had planned to celebrate it early instead. He was going to spend the weekend before he had to leave over at your place. You guys would cuddle, order takeout, watch movies and just enjoy each others presence. He would be gone for months and with the timezone differences you guys had decided that this would be the best plan. He would still call you on your actual birthday, but this way you guys could celebrate it in person. Fast forward to Friday night and you were excitedly getting everything ready for Hoseoks arrival. You had gone to the store earlier to pick up all your favorite snacks, put on your coziest pajamas, had Netflix up on the television, and brought out a ton of pillows and blankets so you guys could make a fort in the living room. The only thing missing now was Hoseok. You knew he had practice today but he had told you that he would come over the second he was done so you sat on the couch and waited patiently for him, your phone beside you in case he decided to call or text you. You weren’t too sure when he was supposed to get off but it was almost 10 pm now so you assumed he would be here in the next half hour. You were soon proven wrong when over an hour had passed and there was no sign of Hoseok. At first you played it off thinking that practice had run a little late, checking your phone to see if he texted you or tried to call...nothing. Taking a deep breath, you decided to call him and see how much longer, the phone ringing before going straight to voicemail. You sighed and gave up as you put on your favorite movie and got cozy on the couch, wanting to stay up and wait for him to arrive. You hadn’t realized how much time had passed until the movie was almost over and your eyelids were getting heavier by the second, falling asleep on the couch as the ending credits played. Hoseok had been so exhausted after practice that he could barely hold himself up. All that was running through his head was going home and falling asleep. It hadn’t even crossed his mind he had somewhere to be until Jungkook pointed it out once they were back at the dorms.
“Hey hyung, correct me if I’m wrong but weren’t you supposed to spend the weekend at Y/n’s?” Hoseok was now much more awake as he shot up and checked the date on his phone. In his tired state he had completely forgotten about your guys plans. Hoseok said nothing to the members as he quickly grabbed his stuff and rushed over to your place while thinking of ways to make you forgive him. His heart dropped when he saw you had passed out on the couch, clearly waiting for him to arrive. Tears clouded his vision as he quickly changed out of his practice clothes and snuggled up with you on the couch, careful not to wake you up. Holding you close and pressing a soft kiss to your head.
“I’m sorry I’m late baby, I’ll make it up to you tomorrow I promise.”
Tumblr media
Park Jimin:
You and Jimin hadn’t been dating for too long, only a couple of months. You still loved him more than anything and he loved you but the two of you were still getting used to the other and being in a relationship. Due to the fact it was a new relationship, it wasn’t uncommon for the two of you to forget minor things such as what the others favorite food was or what time you were supposed to meet up for a date. Still, you guys had never actually forgotten a date and you had figured that Jimin would remember something significant like your birthday. When you texted him asking if he could come over for a bit and he responded with ‘Can’t have to practice.’ you shouldn’t have been surprised. You were disappointed though that you didn’t even get a “happy birthday” or “I love you” from him. It wasn’t like you were asking much, you weren’t even asking to see him in person. All you had wanted was for him to acknowledge that it was your birthday and you would have been fine. You guys could always celebrate it later when he was off from practice. You couldn’t dwell too long on your thoughts though since you got a call from your friend telling you to get ready and you guys were going out. You spent the whole day running around with your friends, going shopping, getting food, and just having a great time. The fact that Jimin still hadn’t said anything was forgotten as you all posed in front of the restaurant you had dinner at for a picture, immediately posting it to your social media. Jimin was just finishing up practice and was debating whether or not he should call and see if you still wanted him to come over, feeling bad that he had to tell you no earlier. Just as he was about to call you, he was stopped when he heard Taehyung gasp and turn to him, “Why didn’t you tell us it was Y/N’s birthday? We would have done something to celebrate.”
“It’s what?!” Jimin asked as he pulled up your social media to see the picture you had posted. His face paled and he cursed under his breath, he hadn’t even known your birthday was coming up.
“Wait,” Jungkook said, “did you actually forget her birthday?”
“I did!” Jimin said as he ran his hand through his hair angrily, “I am such an idiot!” How could he have forgotten your birthday? The one date he should have engraved into his mind by now.
“What are you still doing here then?” Hoseok asked, “go make it up to her before it's too late!” Jimin didn’t need to be told twice as he grabbed his things and ran out of the practice room. All of the shops were closing so he couldn’t get you a proper present but hopefully him being there would be enough until morning. On the way to your place, he pulled out his phone and called your number, letting out a sigh of relief when you picked up.
“Hey princess, happy birthday! I’m so sorry I didn’t call you earlier but I am on my way now and we can spend the whole night together how does that sound?”
Tumblr media
Kim Taehyung:
Taehyung prided himself on having never forgotten an important date. Even if he couldn’t be there to celebrate with you, he would always plan something special to show you how much you meant to him. Whether that be your birthday, an anniversary, whatever the event may be, he always went above and beyond to celebrate. Perhaps that was the reason you were so disappointed when your anniversary came and there was no sign of Taehyung. He had left for work before you had woken up and you hadn’t gotten so much as a text from him saying when he would be home or even acknowledging your existence. You really wanted to believe that he didn’t forget and was still planning to surprise you after practice, or maybe he had done something and you just hadn’t seen it. Were your expectations too high? He had done something special every year so maybe he was just too busy to plan something and you were overreacting. That hope continued to disappear as the night continued and you still hadn’t heard anything from Taehyung. It was now a quarter to midnight and you were starting to get as worried as you were upset. He wasn’t reading your texts and all of your calls went to voicemail. Defeated, you decided to call Jimin and make sure that everything was okay. Anxiety filled you as you waited for the call to go through, the male finally picking up before the last ring.
“Hello?”
“Hey Jimin,” you said with a sigh of relief, “do you know where Tae is? It’s almost midnight and he won’t answer his phone.”
Silence filled the other end before Jimin nervously replied, “He’s here with us at the dorm. Practice got out early so we decided to go out and he crashed as soon as we got back. Did you need something though? I can wake him up if you want to talk-”
“No it’s fine!” you cut him off, trying to contain your tears, “I was just wondering, guess it was stupid of me to wait for him.” Especially since he had clearly forgotten your anniversary and went out with the guys instead.
“Y/N is everything okay? You sound like you’re crying?” Jimin asked.
You decided to be honest with him, “It’s our anniversary, I was waiting for him to come home and celebrate but I guess he forgot.” Before Jimin could do anything you quickly added, “Don’t wake him up though, I’m going to bed so it’s probably best he stay there, goodnight Jimin.”
When Taehyung woke up the next morning, he barely had time to breathe before all six of his bandmates were scolding him for being so forgetful. Shoving him out of the dorm while telling him to go spoil you and fix what he caused. Tae didn’t need to be told twice as he ran and got chocolate, flowers, and a large teddy bear before making his way to you. Knocking on the door, he suddenly felt nervous and hid behind the stuffed toy when you finally answered.
“Tae Tae is very sorry for making you sad and promises to give you all the kisses and cuddles if you forgive him!” he said behind the teddy, looking up at you with a shy smile and hoping you’d forgive him.
Tumblr media
Jeon Jungkook:
He had actually asked you out on your birthday, meaning that you celebrated both days at once. It made the day twice as special for the both of you, but also meant that it hurt a lot more when he ended up forgetting. Jungkook had promised the week before that he would take the day off and the two of you could spend it doing anything you wanted. He had made reservations in case you wanted to go out for dinner, but had also stocked up on snacks in case you wanted to stay in and play video games all day. You were beyond excited and looking forward to spending the day with your loving boyfriend. However, when you woke up you saw him getting ready as if he was about to leave the house. “Kookie where are you going?” you asked, sleep still evident in your voice.
“Work,” he replied without looking at you, “Namjoon called and said they needed me for something so I have to go in.” You felt your heart drop a little when he said this, but tried to be understanding since you knew how important his career was.
“Oh okay, when are you coming back?”
“Not too sure, I’ll probably stay there for a bit to catch up on practice as well if I can.” You shot out of bed and looked at him in shock.
“What about your day off though? I thought we had plans today? You can’t just give those up for work!” it was hard not to raise your voice, but you were getting upset the more he blew you off.
A sigh left Jungkook as he finally looked at you, “My career is important Y/N! I can’t just give that up for something we can reschedule, what is your problem?” Tears threatened to fall at any moment so you quickly turned and pulled the blanket over you.
“Nothing, have fun at work I guess.” Jungkook wanted to ask what was bothering you so much but a quick glance at the time had him grabbing his things and rushing out the door, leaving you to cry silently at the fact he had forgotten both your birthday and anniversary. What he was needed for only ended up taking an hour or two before the members split off again to do their own thing. Jungkook had thought about going home since you seemed upset but figured a few more hours wouldn’t hurt and you clearly needed time to calm down. Namjoon gave the younger a confused look as he walked to the practice room, causing Jungkook to freeze.
“What?”
“Shouldn’t you be going home to be with Y/N? I thought you took the day off to celebrate with her?”
“I did but I figured I may as well practice while I am here,” he said, still not getting the hint.
“Why? Don’t you want to spend your anniversary with your girlfriend?” That’s when it finally hit him, pulling out his phone to check the date. He had taken the day off to celebrate with you and completely forgotten. Now it made sense why you were so upset earlier.
“Shit,” he muttered under his breath, quickly pushing past his leader and running to his car while trying to call you. After a good ten tries with no answer, he finally decided to text you.
“Hey baby, you’re probably really mad at me right now and you deserve to be. Let me make it up to you though. Get dressed and I’ll be there in 20 minutes, we’re going out to celebrate the best thing that has ever happened to me.”

Living for the Moment Ch19
A series of glimpses at Klaus’ life if he’d met Dave in his mid 20s. His life isn’t magically transformed, love can’t fix either of them when they’re both homeless and in a bad place. They’re not even really ready for a relationship yet. But maybe a supportive friendship can set them on a better path, the two of them inspiring each other to take care of themselves. It’s going to be a long and bumpy ride, and the question is, when will they actually admit to themselves that they have feelings for each other? Read More AO3

The problem with coming to a sudden stop after burning himself up the way Klaus had been lately was the loss of adrenaline. That had really been the only thing keeping him going. Well, that and the drugs. Thankfully he still had some of those in his system so the ghosts were leaving him alone, because the inevitable crash wiped him out completely. He didn’t have the strength to keep his eyes open anymore let alone enough to hunt down another contact to resupply.
There were a lot of things Dave had said that he wanted to comment on, mostly to ask what was wrong with him, but he just couldn’t right now. None of this felt real. He’d never had someone so determined to stay in his life, and all he could do was wonder how long until he came to his senses. But that was a problem for future him. As most things were. Right now, Klaus just wanted to sleep.
Not that he got much before they were both jolted awake by a car backfiring. The early commuters were likely out, so they had to leave, but Klaus felt so much worse than he had before. The exhaustion, the aches and pains, the ugly bruise welling up on the side of his face where he’d been punched, and to top it all off, he was pretty sure he had a fever.
“Hey, you okay?” Dave asked when he noticed, and of course he had to be all sweet, rubbing his back and everything.
“Oh yeah, sure, all good here,” Klaus said, trying to suppress a violent shiver at the early morning wind icy cold now that Dave wasn’t pressed up against his side.
“Shit, I didn’t give you my cold, did I?”
“What can I say? Petty theft is one of my charms,” Klaus joked, because he didn’t like how worried he looked.
“I wish I could repay the favor and find a place for you to warm up and sleep it off, but— hang on, I have an idea. Come with me?”
Dave stood and offered his hand, and Klaus considered it. He thought about trying to ditch him again, or just refusing to move. But he was too tired to be stubborn and petty, so he decided it would be easier just to go along and he let himself get pulled to his feet.
Usually, Klaus would be more nosey about this, but when Dave left him outside the shitty motel, he just stood there and waited while he went inside to talk with someone. He surprised himself, honestly. He must be really bad off. At least Dave didn’t keep him waiting long.
“Wow, you really do look like shit,” Dave said when he returned, actually able to get a good look at him now that the early morning sun was starting to make its appearance.
“Still hot though, right?” Klaus said.
“Mmm, feverish and attractive,” Dave joked. “You might be overdoing it a little, might want to tone it down a bit.”
“Have you met me?” Klaus replied.
“Well,” Dave continued, unlocking one of the motel room doors on the first floor. “The good news is, a buddy here owes me a favor. She said we can have this room, but gotta be out of here by tomorrow evening.”
“She is a saint,” Klaus said, stumbling inside after him. “I am going to take a 6 hour long bath, so if you need to pee, you better do it now.”
“No, go ahead,” Dave laughed. “I’m actually going to step out for a bit. I have some other stuff I need to take care of. But I look forward to seeing what you look like all pruny.”
Klaus waved him off with an annoyed sound. He turned on the water as hot as it would go and was ready to soak up all that warmth and wash away the grime. By the time he finally climbed out of the bath, he didn’t feel so frozen. Sure, he still felt like shit, but it was better than nothing.
-
For once, Klaus slept like a rock, so he wasn’t all that surprised when he came to, desperate for a glass of water, to discover Dave was asleep in the other bed by the door. On the way back from the bathroom with a cup, he had the sudden impulse to crawl into Dave’s bed and join him, but tried to block that out and just go back to sleep.
The next time he woke up, it was to hear the shower running. Dave was no longer in the other bed. A midnight shower wasn’t all that strange, though, so he let himself fall back to sleep. But when he woke up again a little over an hour later and the shower was still going, Dave still missing, he started to get a little worried.
Well, more curious than worried. Yes, this definitely wasn’t worry. These types of places weren’t really known for having unlimited hot water and he actually wondered if Dave had been the one to ditch him this time. Curiosity getting the better of him, he stumbled out of bed, pausing at the bathroom door to knock.
“Dave? You alive in there?” he called, but didn’t get a response. “I’m coming in. I swear I’m not doing this just to check you out naked.”
As he slowly opened the door, he noticed that there wasn’t as much steam as he thought there would be. The mirror wasn’t even fogged up. When he turned to the tub, the curtain was pulled back just enough that he could see Dave sitting there, letting the water fall over him, still wearing boxers and a t-shirt. His arms were raised as if to protect his head, fingers digging into his hair.
“Dave,” Klaus called again, concerned now.
Dave flinched as soon as he spotted him, but at least he relaxed when he realized it was just Klaus. Then, he scrambled to turn the water off before sitting back, out of breath and just trying to regain his bearings.
“Hi,” Dave said guiltily. Then, he looked down at himself and sighed heavily, picking at the way his shirt stuck to him uncomfortably. “Aw, man. We have got to stop meeting like this.”
“Would it help if I also got in with my clothes on?” Klaus offered.
“No, no, it’s fine,” Dave sighed, not completely able to stop himself from smiling despite everything.
“Your loss,” Klaus said with a shrug. “I’m not exactly one to judge, I was in here for a criminally long time earlier, but typically I don’t think showers are supposed to last very long. I’m surprised you haven’t run out of hot water.”
“Ah,” Dave said, looking away. “I think I may have, actually.”
“May have what?”
“Run out of hot water,” Dave said, and as if to prove his point, a particularly violent shiver ran through him.
“What the hell?” Klaus said. “You should probably get out of there. Only one of us is allowed to be sick at a time, and I already called dibs.”
He passed Dave a towel as he clambered out of the tub. Then, he left him so he could have a little privacy to change while Klaus wandered around the room in search of any extra blankets stashed away. Dave was already back in his bed when he returned, so he unceremoniously dropped his spoils on top of him before selecting one to unravel sitting on the edge of the bed.
“I swear I don’t take all my showers clothed,” Dave said, forcing a chuckle as he followed suit, no doubt trying to lighten the mood.
“Hey, whatever does it for you,” Klaus shrugged, and Dave smacked him playfully with one of the folded blankets.
“I really am sorry about all this,” Dave groaned after they finished with their work, burrowing deeper into the pile of blankets, still shivering.
“What, hogging all the blankets? I guess I can forgive you.”
“Well, yeah, I guess there’s that now, too,” Dave chuckled. “But I more meant, just, all of this-- my little breakdown. It doesn’t happen as often as it used to, but I still get flashbacks and nightmares sometimes. Showers help, they can kinda ground me I guess, this one was just particularly bad, I guess.”
“Oh,” Klaus said dumbly, not really sure what to do with all that openness. Except run, but he’d already tried that and failed.
This all hit a little too close to home; the nightmares and the flashbacks, the whispered confessions in a moment of vulnerability. In Klaus’ experience, it never went well. He knew Dave was just like this, so much more open than Klaus could ever imagine being, but it still sent a chill through him.
As irrational as it was, he didn’t want Dave to learn the same way he had. At least Klaus didn’t have any plans to betray him, so he might as well encourage him to let it all out now.
“Do you, like, what to talk about it or something?” he said uncertainly. “I heard it’s supposed to help. I mean, I know that’s rich, coming from me of all people.”
“It’s nothing, it’s stupid,” Dave said quickly, waving a hand dismissively. “You’ll laugh at me.”
“Okay, well, now you have to tell me,” Klaus said, climbing onto the bed so he was laying on his stomach, leaning on his elbows, head in his hands.
“I, uh, went to talk to someone today,” Dave said slowly. “About getting support. For vets.”
“That’s good, right?” Klaus said, trying to be encouraging.
“I guess,” he said, eyes sliding to the side, avoiding Klaus’ gaze. “It’s just frustrating, it feels like admitting defeat. But I can’t even hold down a job, something’s gotta change.”
“That’s the spirit?” Klaus said uncertainly. It wasn’t like self-improvement was his specialty. But he could definitely understand the guilt that went with asking for help. Which is why he never did.
“Unfortunately, it’s bringing up a few too many memories. And, when I’m stressed, I have nightmares, so that doesn’t help,” Dave added lamely, trying to laugh a little.
“There, there,” Klaus said, sitting up so he could reach out and pat his shoulder. Taken by surprise, Dave burst out laughing and Klaus couldn’t help but grin, pleased he could still make him laugh, even when he was upset. “If it helps, wearing clothes in the shower is nowhere near the top 10 weirdest things I’ve found people doing in the bathroom,” Klaus said unhelpfully.
“Still,” Dave said, before changing the subject. “But enough about me, how are you feeling? Sorry again for giving you my cold.”
“I might learn to forgive you one day,” Klaus said dramatically, hand on his forehead.
“Hey,” Dave said. “I was thinking, and I realized that I just kinda made you come with me here, sorry about that, too.”
“Yes,” Klaus said, again playing it up. “How dare you force me to sleep in a proper bed for a change?”
“You know what I mean,” Dave said with a weak smile. But then his voice turned serious. “I know I was probably a bit too much before, probably creepy too, tracking you down like that. I just want you to know that, if you really don’t want to be here, I’d understand.”
“What’s the matter, starting to have second thoughts?” Klaus asked. “I am a handful. Being friends with me is gonna be a nightmare”
“Seriously,” Dave persisted. “How about we meet up in a few days and talk it out? I’ll have at least a few more answers once the VA get back to me. I know everything feels impossible right now, but being your friend is worth it, to me. But if all of this has put you off, then feel free to make a break for it. I’ll leave you alone.”
“Sure,” Klaus said distractedly.
Dave nodded and turned away, pulling the blankets up nearly over his head.
Klaus had never been told he was worth it before. He’s never been worth anything and he didn’t know how to feel about all of this. He thought he could feel something melting in his core, a warmth reaching him that he never expected to feel. But there was guilt, too. So much guilt.
How was this even happening? Dave was a pretty smart guy, but he just seemed to be ignoring all the warning signs. Maybe Klaus had tricked him into this somehow. He was very good at manipulating people. But, for some reason, Dave kept coming back, there was no denying that. He wanted to trust him, to believe in Dave even if he couldn’t believe in himself, but he knew how dangerous that was.
Klaus felt cold, again, when he went back to his own bed, moving automatically. Mostly he just felt numb, completely drained. And he was more lost than ever. Maybe he was just too sober, maybe drugs would wipe it all away and remind him who he was. Or, maybe it wouldn’t, and he’d wake up one day and hate himself, wondering what would have been.
Hating himself wasn’t anything new, but when he glanced over his shoulder to see Dave’s curly hair sticking out between blanket and pillow, he so desperately wanted to give hope a try.
