Transcript below cut (did it for fun; this is the first time I've done one):
[Jimmy]: No?
[Martyn]: Wait- so wait. You're not the ghost horse?
[Martyn]: I thought you were ghost rider! Who's ghost rider?
[Jimmy]: ...Who is that?
[Martyn]: I mean we could always punch them and find out.
[Jimmy]: Yeah.
(Immediately sword crits Lizzie)
[Martyn]: AH...
[Jimmy]: OH MY GO-

[Jimmy]: NO! NO. NO.
[Martyn, overlapping]: What did you do?!
~~~
[Mumbo]: Who wants to have a competition with me? How many times can yoou jump over this campfire?
[Martyn]: Uhh, sure?
[Mumbo]: 'Kay.
(Mumbo takes damage while jumping over the campfire)
[Martyn]: Oh, jeez.
[Pearl, exasperated]: Mumbo...
[Cleo, fairly amused] Mumbo...
[Pearl]: Zero, appearantly.
[Mumbo]: So, I- I've set the score at zero.
(Martyn tries and succeeds)
[Mumbo]: Ooo, okay.
[Martyn]: There you go.
[Mumbo]: You already got one.
[Pearl]: Mumbo...what are you doing..?
(Mumbo jumps again and takes damage again)
[Mumbo]: Okay...
[Cleo, laughing]: Mumbo..!
(Martyn tries it again and jumos over it flawlessly, again)
[Mumbo]: Zero again for me.
[Pearl, overlapping]: Mumbo, stop-
~~~
[Tango]: You got spleefed by an enderman. I love it.
[Etho, doing a poor imitation of Bdubs]: Sheesh! I'm late! Judas Priest! Let me park my horse. I'm coming up!
(Heart Foundation's laughs + Grian's hysterical laughter overlapping with his talking)
[Grian]: Hi, "Bdubs."
[Skizz]: This thing's not ready because-
[Etho, still doing that impression]: What is this?--
~~~
[Lizzie]: I'm going.
[Tango]: Lizzie, we missed your party!
[Lizzie]: Oh, did you?
[Skizz]: We're so sorry.
[Lizzie]: Oh, I didn't notice because I was having so much fun with the one person that turned up! Goodbye, everybody!
(Heart Foundation all "aww"-ing out of sympathy)
~~~
[Cleo]: If you go to- If you go and do levels in the end you can like-- like I got seven, so.
[Gem]: Wowww.
[Cleo]: Hi, biggest, bravest, boy!
[Bdubs]: Thank you! I am!
(Cleo wheeze)
~~~
[Bdubs]: Okay. Yes?
[Etho, overlapping]: Look at this guy.
[Grian, very monotone]: Bdubs, my beloved. You've returned.
[Bdubs]: Wait- both of you? I'm gonna puke--
~~~
[Joel]: What is Pearl building???
[Gem, hidden beneath Mumbo's laughter]: You should just...admit defeat, if I'm being honest.
[Joel, overlapping]: Pearl...
[Joel again, deeply distressed]: WH- WHY HAVE YOU GONE FOR THIS COLOR SCHEME, PEARL??? WHY THIS SHAPE AND THIS COLOR SCHEME, PEARL????

compilation of nice/sweet things the foxes said to neil because even though they're a bunch of assholes who'll insult anyone in their vicinity they all just love him so damn much (part 2) :
ANDREW :
"I'm not here for your entertainment" "but as expected you are talented enough to multitask"
"you are neil josten and I am still the man who said he would keep you alive. I don't care if you use this phone tomorrow. I don't care if you never use it again. but you are going to keep it on you because one day you might need it. on that day you're not going to run. you're going to think about what I promised you and you're going to make the call."
"I'm not afraid of you" "that's why you're so interesting"
DAN :
"don't thank us, remember us. we're your teammates. we're here to help you with whatever you need."
"you've got us now"
"that was perfect. but don't do something that reckless again. we can't replace you. hear me?"
"neil, you can use the girls' shower while we're busy"
MATT :
"just try not to think about it until we get there. you won't do yourself any favorite if you spend the ride stressing out about things you can't change."
"if you don't have anywhere to go, I'll drag you home with me"
KEVIN :
"if you get hurt out there, you do something about it. you take it easy, you have coach pull you, you ask abby for help - I don't care. if you ever say 'I'm fine' about your health again I will make you rue the day you were born"
"neil has no place in riko's games. he is a fox."
"run. it's the only way you'll survive"
"you should be court."
"will you still teach me?" "every night."
"I will watch you. if you want to drink tonight. I won't let you say something you'll regret." "you'll be drunk inside an hour. then who'll stop me?" "I would stop drinking."
"you're not going. do you know what he'll do to you?"
WYMACK :
"why did you pay for stalls coach?" "maybe I knew you'd need them one day"
"neil, if you can't be here say so. abby can take you elsewhere until it's time to leave. get out of here and get some fresh air."
"what can I do?" "I don't know" "when you know, tell me"
"sometimes the world feels so big but then I'm reminded how small it is" "big or small just remember you're not alone in it."
"if riko really was behind it somehow, the blame is all on him. he chose to take out his petty rage on seth. he chose to cross a line. you didn't. you hear me? you didn't. don't ever blame yourself for seth's death. that it too dangerous a road to walk down. you keep your eyes on your own path and keep moving forward"
"neil" "I'm fine" "be fine inside where it's warmer"
"look I know I've always told you all to take your personal problems up with betsy or abby. I've said it's not my place to get into anything outside the court. I hope you've figured out by now I'm just blowing hot air. I'm not real good at being a shoulder, but I do have a working set of ears."
"help me" "let me"
"this doesn't mean anything. I'm still a fox." "of course you are."
NICKY :
"kid you're killing me. why do you always get that deer-in-headlights look when someone does something nice for you?"
"you worry about neil's career. I'll worry about his personal happiness."
"I didn't really get into the gritty details last time because those aren't reallt dan and matt's business, but you're family, so I can tell you."
"there's obsession and there's dysfunction. you can't make exy your end-all be-all. this won't last forever, okay? you'll shine bright, then you'll retire, and then what? you gonna spend the rest of your life at home alone with all your trophies? you can't be just this, neil. this isn't enough to live for."
"thanks for taking one for the team, neil. you're a real friend."
"are we? friends?" "you are going to be the absolute death of me. yeah, kid. we're friends. you're stuck with us, like it or not."
"I only see that look on neil's face when someone tries to do something nice for him, but we all know kevin's as bratty as they come. what did you say, kevin, and do I need to defend neil's honor or what?"
RENEE :
"I am not the girl I once was but the shade of my old life will always existe inside of me. that is what helps me connect with andrew. I am hoping it will help me connect with you."
"I do not know your story. if you've trusted andrew with anything, he hasn't shared the details with me and he never will. but if you are as like us as we first predicted you to be, perhaps one day you can also come to see me as a friend."
"if either andrew or I can help you, please know we are here."
"and you neil? are you all right?"

"I need that edit by 3pm, Watson!"
"Got it."
Even if the office was filled with the constant clack of keyboards, or desk phones ringing, or even Jameson himself barking right by her ear — as he was right now — MJ still had to keep up her persona. Agreeable, non-confrontational, all part of company protocol. There was no time for personal opinions or rebuttals, other than Jameson's; she was sure everyone would start coming in tin hats if it meant keeping their jobs.
"You're falling behind, you know," he continued as she quickly clicked off of the email she was working on. "Going to that school fair of yours set you at least a week behind!"
"It was one afternoon, sir. And I'm all caught up, the edit's not due until—"
"The edit is due when I say it's due. You out of all people should understand how things work around here by now. Get it done!"
The man sauntered off without much opportunity for her to reply, a cup of coffee crumpling between his fingers that he probably had yet to take a sip of. The poor intern that had made it would be the next to get an earful when he did try it, she was sure. Too much sugar! Not enough milk! Did you make this with your eyes closed? she recalled. MJ had heard it all by now.
Jameson didn't really have the gall to fire her — she knew that at the very least. The article could wait, however. Visions was yet to release a statement about their fired teacher, and the article would just look like all their other ones — speculatory and clickbait-y with not very much actual information. The Sinister Six ones certainly did well though, always on their broadcasts and the front of their website. Even NNC didn't have as much notoriety as the Bugle did with its less-than skeptical audiences.
The Visions student, right. With a few pasted links and a couple attachments, along with a lackluster "Good luck!" tacked on the end, she hit send. Good to know kids still have dumb email addresses.
She didn't take being abandoned a second time at the fair personally, really — everyone was fifteen once — but she couldn't help but wonder what had happened. It was almost imperceptible, but she knew when a smile looked off. There was something noticeably different about you when you had come back.
"MJ, uh, can I get your business card by any chance?"
"You know what a business card is?" she had joked, but it hadn't done much to ease the discomfort. "Yeah, sure. Contact me if you need anything."
"Yeah, thanks."
You'd asked for articles. Specifically on the Chameleon, and on the recent Prowler activity. You hadn't told her much, just that you needed help compiling some information for school. Some... presentation. MJ wasn't sure whether it was a lie or not, but it was all publicly available information anyhow.
You'd also wanted any information on Visions "teacher", Garrett East. His arrest had been for identity theft, and nothing more. Not many had reported on it as of yet, given he was detained so recently, but you were an insider. He had apparently been your calculus teacher, and the man that he had stolen the identity of had supposedly gone missing a few months before Garrett returned in his place. At least, that's all she had of her article. Maybe it wasn't the best idea to send it to a random high school student before her own boss, but it also wasn't like the man had any real idea what went on in his company. It was a wonder they managed to get through the quarter.
It was just a favour for someone nice she'd met. Maybe it'd repay her in some way in the future, most likely not. Regardless, she couldn't help but smile a little when she noticed her phone light up, a "thank you" text under your name. If only she actually had a work phone number, and it wasn't just her regular one. Visions students making connections already, it seemed.
The time on the screen was 2:41pm. She was met face to face with her wallpaper once again — a low-lit picture of her and a brown-haired man with glasses, the two of them smiling, red faced and dressed like their college selves. Peter Parker, her fiancé. They were holding those terrible beers he'd sworn by. He was a photographer, but this was one of the only pictures he'd taken of them together. It was shot on a bite-sized digital camera they'd bought for college, but never ended up using much. Now, it was all she really had.
Maybe the Chameleon really had come back when Peter had gone missing. Maybe it had something to do with you, with Visions
You probably already had a lot on your plate. And so did she. If she had anybody to chase, it was Otto Octavius. He'd offered Peter an internship in Manhattan. She'd never seen the man herself, only heard from him how good of a person he was, how this was going to get him a job and that it'd be good for them. That he'd finally get some use out of his degree and get to pursue science instead of taking "crummy" pictures for the Bugle. That they could save up for their wedding, and...
That was in Manhattan. The disappearances now were in Brooklyn. And even then, it was coming close to a year since he had disappeared.
She was always running in circles, at the command of an old man with a head too big for his body.
2:43pm. MJ turned off her phone, sliding it into her pocket.
Better get this edit finished.
Tumblr media
2:43pm. Wednesday.
Ideally, with a couple days off of school, you would probably be at home, or maybe even out doing something fulfilling with your life. Maybe you could've even gone somewhere with Miles, if he hadn't up-and-disappeared along with every trace of him.
Your unread messages to him faded to black, leaving you to stare at your own face. Maybe you could've used those extra days to sleep, if it hadn't been for the chilling glow of purple eyes or the melting disfigured face that threatened to materialise everytime you closed your eyes.
What did he even like? Comics that he'd mentioned to you once? Of course he'd want to go to a comic book store with you after you'd made fun of him for seeming to want to deal with criminals himself. If only he'd come save you from Brooklyn Public Library right now. You were certain it couldn't get any more swampy in here with all the Visions students scrambling to do their off-day work right now.
Reading through the reply to a ballsy request you'd given to the Bugle's head journalist, you had a few questions in mind other than the ones concerning your disappearing, sort-of friend. Was all this research really practical? Maybe not. Would it help you sleep to know that the guy that had been teaching you calculus since the start of sophomore year was actually posing as a man that had gone missing months ago?
Another very normal thing that only seemed to happen to you.
Maybe you just attracted bad luck. That girl in your history class had joked about it last year, after you'd bumped into your teacher and every single paper he'd been holding had fallen to the ground in one scattered disaster. She wouldn't let it go, and it appeared that your brain wouldn't either.
Or like that time you went to Oscorp on a visit day and happened to be the only one there, trapped with a shapeshifting monster and the Prowler on the 90 millionth floor of that god-damned tower.
Maybe it was bad luck, or maybe you were cursed — or maybe you just walked into these situations on purpose. Like right now, sifting through years of articles on real criminals, with nothing but a hunch or fifteen.
The Chameleon had been arrested, like Miles had said, eight years ago on accounts of identity theft, much like your "teacher" but also very little like your teacher. According to what you were reading, Dmitri Smerdyakov been dubbed "the Chameleon" for a string of carefully orchestrated take-overs of big companies after impersonating their CEOs. His defence had argued that the big names in these companies were gone because they "wanted to be free of the burden of running their own companies".
You didn't have to be a journalist to make a face at that.
There was no mention of shapeshifting, as you'd seen with Wellston and Stromm. Just a couple lousy identity theft charges that didn't add up to their total amount anyway. This guy had more luck than you'd ever had.
The only other person that had seen any "shapeshifting" happen was Miles, and although he'd seemed surprised, something about his reaction was strange. You couldn't place it, but there was some sort of analytical twinge in his eyes, as if he was solving a math problem and not looking at someone shapeshift for the first time. You didn't know anything, really. Miles seemed like he did, though. If only you could bump into him and wring it out of him. And maybe go buy overpriced comic books with him and forget about the fact that your teacher had been arrested and midterms were coming up and maybe even become actual friends.
If only you were that lucky.
If only it was that easy to move past, as well. The fact that someone that had been involved in disappearances 8 years ago might be mixed up with this, along with the recent uptick in missing people made you feel uneasy. Surely any detective would have put two and two together by now, but remembering the fact that the shapeshifter had turned into a literal police officer dissolved any reassurance that thought might've brought. You were in a public library surrounded by unoptimistic college students, parents with their kids and even some of your own classmates, but the feeling was completely your own, tucked away behind a computer screen and a booked monitor session.
You couldn't be scared, though. You'd already seen probably the scariest thing in your life, kind-of almost died, and been wound up in so much craziness you knew so little about. If only high school had prepared you for researching literal criminals.
"Your 30 minute session is over. You will be logged out shortly."
God damn it.
If only Brooklyn Public Library's computer sessions weren't 30 minutes. You didn't want to log back in anyway, not if someone had booked after you. You could go back home, the library had just been an excuse to get out, really. Not that you'd made a whole new email and signed in as a guest on the computer. Not that you were paranoid.
Picking up your bag and checking your messages one last time you made a beeline for the exit. Well, less of a line and more of a strange obstacle course through the swarm of people. And of course you had to knock into someone. Just your luck.
"Hey, sorry," you mumbled, hands raising just a little in apology. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, yeah..." The person dusted themself off a little with a frown, before looking up to meet your eyes.
Rafael?
"Hey, it's you," he realised, eyes widening as if he'd just gotten lucky.
Out of all places...
"I... gotta go."
"No, no, wait. I need you to do something."
Of course you do.
"I really don't have the time," you whispered back, as he caught up to your advance towards the doors.
"Uh, hey, listen... You talk to Miles, right? Like, he's your friend?"
"Yeah...?" No...? You weren't even sure at this point.
"Uh, look, I need you to tell him something..."
"What, you're in love with him?" you spat, finally looking at him again. "Cause it seems like it. You're always talking about him. Always talking to me about him."
"What?! No the f*ck I'm no—"
A much louder "shhhhhh!" got your attention. The librarian didn't look too pleased. Neither did any one of the people who turned to look at you.
"I'm not gay, man!"
So, the two of you were now out on the street as Rafael defended his sexuality with nothing but exasperated hand gestures.
"I didn't say that."
"Okay, well I'm not. Damn, why are you acting weird for?"
"Your face is red."
"I'm black!"
"That melanin isn't doing anything for you."
"Shut the f*ck up!"
You rolled your eyes, hiding the way the corners of your mouth were starting to lift with a deep exhale. The poor guy was not very discreetly checking his face right now with the back of his hand.
"What, then? What did you wanna say to him so bad?" you asked, instantly making him retract his hand from his cheek.
"Forget it."
"No, tell me. You got us all the way out here for no reason?"
He gave you a look, before promptly looking away, mumbling something under his breath.
"Didn't hear that." That made him groan loudly. It was akin to a petulant child, if not a few octaves deeper.
"I'm... sorry."
Huh?
"You're... sorry?" you repeated, making him let out a huff.
"Look, I..." Rafael met your eyes again, his narrowing uncomfortably. There was something strange in his expression. "My mom's missing. I dunno who to tell. I know I messed up and I... I get it now. I get it. The thing with his dad."
Oh sh*t.
Remorse. That was what you were seeing in his eyes. Or maybe regret. Neither you thought you'd ever see from him.
"Tell him I'm sorry. Or don't. Whatever," Rafael muttered, kicking a bottle cap on the ground until it skittered to a halt by a dog, who found interest in it as its owner tried to tug it along the pavement.
"You can't tell him yourself?" you replied, brows furrowing. As bad as you felt, this was a personal matter. You weren't about to be a parrot for the guy that hadn't grown out of his bullying phase.
"You think he'd listen?"
"It's understandable if he doesn't."
"And what if he doesn't come back?"
"Why..." What? "Why wouldn't he come back?"
"I... dunno. Why can't you just tell him?"
Huh. "Why wouldn't he come back, huh?"
Rafael gives you a sort of reserved look, as if he's contemplating whether or not to lie to your face.
"I heard something about him while I was in that office. He's like... withdrawing from the school."
"He's... what?" Withdrawing from the school? Could he even withdraw that fast? "Why?"
"I dunno, damn! Just... forget it. I don't know why I even asked you man."
Rafael turned to leave, a scowl forming on his face.
"Hey," you called out, looking away before he could meet your eyes. He didn't turn around, though.
"What?"
"...I'm sorry about your mom," you managed, before he could go far enough. "I hope they find her."
"Yeah," he muttered, before throwing his hood over his head.
And now your friend, not-friend, study buddy was gone. The only person you kind of got along with at all outside of just one class. Another person missing. Rafael's mom. Maybe you needed to get out of Brooklyn for college. You certainly wouldn't miss the subway all too much, you thought, crammed in-between people.
"Stand clear of the closing doors, please."
As soon as you got out of the station and into the street, you were met with a familiar face among the people passing by. Instead of the Visions uniform, he was in a jacket too big for him, crinkled sweatpants and purple Jordans.
Miles. Calc-wiz. Mr. Disappearing Act. Withdrawn from the school, now in front of you and definitely already getting on your nerves.
He was looking at you, a hint of surprise in his otherwise smoothed-over features.
"Miles?"
"Yeah. Can we... talk?" His cheek dimpled with the awkward half-smile you'd only seen a couple times, but you were so strangely familiar with. You didn't know whether to freak out at him in front of a crowd of people or head home and hope that he didn't follow you.
"...Sure," is what comes out of your mouth.
Just your luck.
Tumblr media
"~Ain't no love—" Skip.
"~Ha, sicker than your average—"
"Poppa twist cabbage off instinct..." Skip.
Miles was getting sicker than average of his uncle's playlist. Maybe working in silence was better.
He took out his earbuds, setting them on his mess of a desk and picking up the screwdriver again. Uncle Aaron was busy, "out of town", as his voicemail said. Probably doing something Miles wasn't supposed to be involved in. He'd be back in a day or two, as always. Never in one place too long.
Even for someone so experienced, he knew this was his uncle's first real "vigilante" gig. Uncle Aaron wasn't getting paid, nor was he working under someone trying to solve a cold case Jeff had been involved in with his colleagues. His dad was no detective, but always seemed to want to help out, and the police were getting desperate with all the recent missing person's cases. There was no real pattern, and sometimes people would be returned just fine. That's what the police were hoping for.
Dr. Stromm had disappeared for about 2 weeks, and returned to his normal work at Oscorp. That could be excused for a vacation off of work, for all anyone knew. Wellston, however, was still missing. Probably dead. Just a couple had turned up dead. It was so unpredictable that they all seemed unrelated, but the kinds of people going missing were all of use — scientists, lawyers, bank tellers. Wellston had been getting his PhD while teaching before he went missing. All people of use to the Chameleon.
Whoever his uncle was working for at the same time as all of this likely had no idea. He was probably working for that person right now, even when they had this case to deal with.
Miles had only been up to this after his dad had passed, and he knew he wasn't as polished as Aaron — not after what happened at Oscorp. Those gauntlets couldn't focus their energy, even if they were more powerful and he could charge shockwaves through the air almost instantaneously, and he had bragged about it a little too much when they'd tested it in the garage.
Now, he had faint lines on his skin from the excess heat, and had been taking them apart and rebuilding them for weeks in his room. His visor needed work too. It was way better in depth, but the resolution sucked. Even then, he was sure he could make something better than what his uncle had. Rigorous training wasn't enough to do this sort of work. He had to do his own thing, even if he was taking up the same schtick. Eventually his uncle's beard would gray and he'd have to be the real Prowler.
He was a good guy, after all. Like his uncle, like his dad.
By deduction, the Prowler was a good guy too. But he wasn't the Prowler today. He was Miles. The Miles that had been shouted at for trying to quit school again. The Miles that was fifteen and spent his days off building crappy gear.
Maybe on a day like this he could spend time with other people like he did in middle school. Go to a fast food place, or go to Micah's house to play video games, or hang around in some parking lot and run when he and his friends accidentally set off a car alarm. The sun was setting outside his window now. It felt like those evenings where he was reluctant to be taken home by his dad, after he was at Micah's playing GTA on Micah's older brother's console, laughing and screaming, Micah's sister shouting at them to shut up from the hallway.
Miles puts the visor down, walking up to his window and pushing it open. The air didn't get any warmer around this time of year, a cold wind brushing past his face as he stuck his head out to look at the city below.
Above him was the half-finished mural. A colourful backdrop of red and blue, and purple. His dad's face without the glasses, hat without the logo, the text outline without the actual text.
"Captain Jeff Morales. Husband, Hero, Father," read the ghost of the text.
His dad wasn't missing. There was no hope of him turning up one day, and that he could leave the mural unfinished and paint it over with something else. There was no hope that he'd wake up one night and instead of finding himself grasping at air it would be his mom shaking him awake to tell him his dad had come home.
His dad was dead. His dad was facing him right now and smiling like he did every morning before he left the house. His dad was painted on a brick wall, missing his glasses.
Miles knew he wasn't smiling for him. He was smiling for the city. He was the face of PDNY, captain for half a day alive and for the rest of eternity until Brooklyn forgot him, deceased. The mural had made him feel better when he hadn't been able to leave his own bedroom and decided to get up and start it with his uncle, but now he felt all sorts of emotions swirling through him. Regret, anger, grief, all of it at the same time — only to stop right at his tear ducts, tightening his throat.
He hadn't cried back then; his mom shared the pain of the both of them, even now. Even when they went to his tombstone, she was the only one that had cried as he'd kept a reassuring hand on her back.
Selfish, were the tears that blurred his vision, not heavy enough to roll down his face.
He sat, staring, eyes stinging yet soothed by the moisture. The sun cast a halo around the building, the mural in shadow and the city behind flooded in red-orange light.
"Husband, Hero, Father."
Was he a hero before he was his father? He had painted that himself. He knew his dad was a good guy. Was he a good guy before he was a good dad?
His thoughts were interrupted with the buzz of his phone in his pocket. There was a message on the notification bar, overtaking the text he'd been yet to reply to from his mom.
Are you the miles talking to me right now 1m ago

So you did believe him about the Chameleon. Or maybe you were the Chameleon and just being incredibly smart. He couldn't be 100% sure. Not like he ever was. Swooping out of his window, he threw his hoodie down to hang off the fire escape stairs before starting to run up the side of his building, shoes vacuuming him to stand horizontally.

The sky was now a shade of blue-purple, the reds and oranges dissolving behind the skyline. It was getting dark, and fast.
Okay
Manoeuvering through the maze of buildings with his shoes keeping him a thousand feet from being heard or seen, Miles headed for Moore Street with the little map in his peripheral vision. When he got there, all that welcomed him was a lone street lamp that had yet to turn on, a couple of closed local grocer's and a dimly-lit diner named "Marge", a discoloured space next to it the shape of an "s". Close enough.
Sifting through the modes on his visor, he settled when he saw the outline of two people. One strangely shaped like him and one strangely shaped like you.
He climbed down a little, dimming the lights on his gear completely as he receded into a small alley. The guy definitely looked like him physically. Tall, handsome, standing outside the bathroom, shifting on his toes...? Creasing my Jordans? Seriously?
Oh, yeah he had you to deal with. And himself, apparently.

Miles had about zero idea how to, but he needed to figure it out in about 30 seconds from now.
K
You made your way out of the bathroom, and he moved to the side of the diner you were closest to from outside to get a better view.
"...Gotta go home..."
"...Lemme walk you..."
As you left the store into the empty street, he could make out the slight twinge of nervousness on your face as you looked around ― probably looking for him and finding nobody.
"Hold on, I gotta text my parents..." You took out your phone, turning yourself a little to obscure the screen.
"Yeah, that's cool." Sounded almost exactly like him. Creepy.

At that moment, you took one last look at your phone before turning into the alleyway. You were just a couple quick steps into the alley when his doppelganger grabbed yourshoulder.
"What the hell are you doing, Miles?!" you shouted suddenly, trying to pull yourself free, only to be thrown against the wall of the alleyway.
"I'm doing you a favour. You're not going to school anymore," he responded, his tone suddenly flat and nothing like it was a moment ago.
"What are you talking about? I'm just trying to go home."
His doppelganger was now featureless, his face melting away into the blankness Miles still couldn't describe. The panic on your face is visible from yards away. Miles just has to catch him off-guard. Without hurting you. He could do that.
"So you are the Chameleon," you muttered, still trying to pry his hands away as his grip wrinkled your clothes further.
"Ah, so you did figure it out. Excellent." That definitely didn't sound like him anymore. "You were always the most interesting in that class of yours."
"You... You were the one who was at those after-school classes, huh? And at Oscorp. And that... fair." That you were right about. "What the hell is your problem?"
"My problem is that I need a little something from your school, and you seem like the easiest solution."
"Couldn't you do that while you were a teacher? You got that other guy to be arrested in your place. Aren't you done?"
"It looks like you have me all figured out. Except for one small thing."
"What?"
Something glistened by your neck. Sharp. Metal. He had a knife pressed to your throat, the blade just managing to dent your skin.
"You're going to die."
Missing. Sometimes they turned up. Other times they were probably dead. If he didn't figure this out, you were dead already.
"I'm... I kind of figured that too, you know."
"Oh, really? Aren't you something?" There was something like a grin on his face, but it was too misshapen to really tell. "So unaffected. So controlled."
"How do you even... turn into these people? What the hell is wrong with you?"
"Take a guess. An educated guess is always better than nothing." His voice pitched up into Wellston's awkward sing-song, repeating what he used to say in class. Near-perfectly.
"Why are you so sure you won't get caught?"
"That's not an answer, and I can't exactly reveal such things, you know."
"Not even when you're about to kill me?"
"Oh, unfortunately not."
"Go f*ck yourself." That made the man laugh. If he wasn't in this situation right now, Miles might have managed a smile at that.
"Yeah, go f*ck yourself," he muttered, voice being caught half-way into his modulator in a grainy, deep sound.
In an instant, Miles soared above the two of you, foot smashing itself right in the centre of the Chameleon's face, his knife clattering to the floor. As he stumbled back, you got up, taking the opportunity to run, footsteps hard against the pavement.
Suddenly, the Chameleon was stuck between the wall and Miles' knee, steadying himself with his hands against the brick. Miles could make out some kind of morphed look of glee on his face as his clawed hand clamped him to the wall by both sides of his neck. The lips and teeth were starting to form through the flesh, and Miles let the energy build up in the converter as the smile fell into place, cell by cell.
"You don't want to kill me," he stated, simply.
"Pretty sure I do." Miles' claws just scraped at the skin starting to form at his neck. The quiet whirr of his gauntlet starts to become audible.
"You can't kill me. I am everywhere."
If everywhere is right in front of me, I mean...
"I know what you're doing, Dmitri. It ends here."
"I know what you're doing, Prowler."
He finally sees it, what's forming on the man's face. It's him.
"One of my best students, I never would have guessed," he started, grinning wildly, with some sort of overwhemled excitement.
Miles felt his mouth go dry, his face under the mask paralysed as the one staring at him continued to smile.
"The DNA that I retrieved from you is that of... Miles Gonzalo Morales."
It was as if the shockwave forming in his gauntlet slowed with time itself as he came to stare. He was looking at himself. Smiling. Grinning. Crazed. Miles Gonzalo Morales.
"Kill me. I have my assets, and subordinates. They will end you. Your mother, Rio. The hospital she works at. Your uncle, Aaron."
The quiet whirr in his gauntlet faded into silence. He felt his hand retreat, leaving the Chameleon, still posing as Miles, grinning, unblinking, and flat against the wall.
"Oh, you've made a very good choi―"
SLAM!
Metal met with bone, an audible crack following as Miles' clawed fist met the wall, the Chameleon's face smashed between the two.
"You mother... f*cker..." he breathed out, voice choked through the sudden rush of blood, smearing against the wall as he lifted his face from it.
Miles pointed his gauntlet at him again, the whirring renewing itself to a high-pitched scream, light purple expanding between them and tearing through the alleyway like fire.
"Muerto el pollo." (Job done.)
The man's reforming grin was overtaken by the brightness of the blast, energy snapping into one focused point before hurtling through the air, right at the Chameleon.
Miles felt his ears start to ring. His body was lightweight. Airborne.
His back hit something hard, and suddenly the lightness was replaced with an erratic clawing spreading up his arm. The light flickered into sparks that led fire under his sleeve, eating away at his skin. Burning. The blindness faded away, eyes managing to focus. All he could see past the smoke was a figure approaching him, and a hysteric laugh that grew louder and instantaneously changed pitch.
"So confident," is what he could make out through the ringing in his ears that had bled through his head into a sharp, disorienting pain. "I almost thought you had me."
Ripping the burning gauntlet off of himself, he noticed something jammed in the converter as he shook the heat from his arm. Some sort of sabotaging device. He'd had just a few seconds before the burning would've made it past his skin. The Chameleon had planned this.
Looking to his other gauntlet, he noticed the same device, ripping it out before crushing it under his foot. Never twice.
Swallowing back the cough building up in the back of his throat, Miles made a move for the Chameleon, before catching his figure turn left ― running.
Coño. (F*ck.)
Launching himself up, Miles locked onto the man, hurtling through a series of alleyways, fluidly dodging every obstacle in his way as if to waste no time. He could not let him get into a crowd and disappear. This had to end here, even if he had no god damn plan and his uncle was sure to scold him when he got back. He wasn't going to let you or anyone else get killed by this crazy f*ck.
Miles threw himself down into the next alleyway, hearing heavy, fast footsteps, someone approaching in his vision.
Just a little closer.
SLAM!
He threw the Chameleon down onto the ground, noticing he'd already changed appearance.
That face. No, this wasn't the Chameleon.
It was... you. And you were looking right at him. Terrified.
"Please, please let me go," you mumbled, gasping for air in-between words... "I... You're the... Prowler, I― Please― The... That guy's after me and..."
Your head fell against the concrete, an exhausted look in your eyes as you caught your breath.
"Please. I didn't... I didn't do anything. I can keep quiet about you, I haven't told the police anything. About Oscorp. Nothing."
"I know it's you, Chameleon." You would've ran far away by now, he was sure.
"I―I swear I'm not. I'm not him, I don't know how to prove it to you, but... I called my friend for help and... he never came. Please. Please let me go. I don't know where the Chameleon is right now."
Another set of footsteps came towards the both of you.
"I'm right here, Prowler," emerged another voice from the alley.
It was... you?
"Come on. Weren't you looking for me?" the other you continued, half-hidden in shadow. "Come get me."
So the you on the floor... was actually you. And this...
"Please, that's... that's him, you've gotta let me go," the you that was on the ground muttered, exasperated. There was a waver in your voice. In the way your eyes widened looking at him. Almost like confusion.
The Chameleon was right there. Admitting that he was in fact the Chameleon. While he was trying to run away.
"Please," he heard below him, a quiet, desperate whisper in the silence.
You both looked identical. Even though he'd injured the Chameleon, the both of you were unscratched. You both sounded the same too, from what he could decipher. No real way to tell you apart. And his only answer right now felt like a trick.
He kept eyes on the you standing before him, barely making out a face. Something was there, in the way that you looked, the way you stood. Something strange, something he couldn't figure out fast enough to make any decision.
And then, he felt a little pinch. One that suddenly exploded and tore through his flesh, wrangling with every one of his nerves as his body seized. You had lost your scared, desperate expression, your face now distorting along with his vision into that of a smile.
"I understand," a voice started, ringing through his head as if it was everywhere. "You want to help me."
The pain was clawing its way through his body from a point in his leg. He turned his head, noticing the discarded needle beside him. He'd managed to ease his hand just close enough to administer it. You ― no, the Chameleon, lifted himself from the ground, before Miles felt his head spin hard with a kick.
"I admire you, your wit," he called out, letting out a laugh as he started to walk towards you. "Turning against your own savior. Wonderful. Absolutely wonderful."
No, no... There was... there was no way you were working with him. There was no way you...
"You have proven yourself. You'll be better than... than that Garrett fool. I've changed my mind."
Miles rummaged in his utility belt for something, anything. He had no idea what he'd been given, but it was already running through his blood, reaching his brain and poisoning every part of it.
"Your friend over there is going to be unconscious in about half a minute. Why don't you take care of him? I'll be a fool to kill you once you do."
Get up, Miles.
His head throbbed with the sound of your footsteps, each one getting louder and louder. His limbs were weakening. He could barely lift his head.
Get up!
"Dad... Dad? No no no... Get up, get up!"
The gauntlet was slowly slid off of him, now in your hands as his arm fell uselessly onto the ground in front of him.
The gauntlet clipped onto your arm, fingers moving as yours did. He felt the metal claws just scrape his helmet, a faint clink echoing through his skull.
Miles didn't want to look at your face, but he couldn't find it in him to look anywhere else. There was that something from before in your expression that he couldn't quite place, and he still didn't have an answer. It bothered him, for some damn reason. Not the fact that he had his own weapon pointed to his brain as he was losing consciousness. Not the fact that he couldn't move. Not the fact that his last thoughts were about the look on your face and not his mom, or his dad.
Whirrr...
That brightness that the Chameleon had been staring at before was now staring right at him. Overwhelming, blinding, all-encompassing. He felt the faint heat on his skin, as his eyelids grew heavy. Something like warmth in contrast to the cold metal, if just for a second. Something like knowing in your eyes. Something hopeful, saving, loving. Even if just for a second. Even if his brain had made it up to let him succumb.
He wished he could smile, and not be terrified. He wished he could be like his dad, who had smiled.
"Take care of your mom for me, Miles. I ain't gonna be around forever."
And he reached for his helmet. To show you his face, to hope you'd stop once you saw him. He reached, before his arm fell limp beside him once more.
Sorry. I'm so sorry.
Tumblr media
"Hey, hello?"
"Hey!"
"Prowler? ...Are you dead?"
God, what did you have to do if he didn't respond...? Breathing, pulse...
"What the..." you heard, before he exploded into a painful-sounding coughing fit, tinged by some kind of voice changer. The Prowler lifted his head, and you could make out az kind of shadow where his eyes were behind the dull, unlit screen. "Huh...?"
"Hey, uh. The... Chameleon..."
Gesturing to the pile on the floor, the Prowler seemed to tense a little at the sight. It was the Chameleon, or... what was left of him. His face charred and caved in by the likes of a certain purple energetic blast. Right, you, had to explain that, the de-powered weapon in your hands.
"Sorry for... I didn't know what I was doing, that was―"
"You killed him?" came out a quiet, modulated voice.
That was...
You killed him. With the Prowler's weapon.
You were defending yourself. You were defending him. That man was a...
Thunk!
The metallic arm hit the ground as it rolled out of your arms, looking into the hollow shadows of the Prowler's eyes.
You didn't know anything about any of these people, and you were deep into their world. It was one that you had never thought you'd see, and now you had nothing to dig yourself out of it. You decided to trick him and when Miles was too late to figure it out you had...
You had killed someone. Turned the blast on him within a split second, watching it sear through his skull in a merciless flurry, stab after stab of burning hot energy wracking more and more screams. Right until the weapon had run out of energy. Until your finger grew numb from the trigger inside the device and the alleyway had gone silent. The man that had haunted your mind for months was unmoving before you, ripped of all features, all life.
Murder. Manslaughter. This man had connections. They'd come after you. After everyone you knew and loved. After Miles.
You should've stayed home.
The ache of adrenaline surged through your heart, your muscles, begging. Begging you to move. To run. To get up.
Get up. Run. Run away. Scream for help. Do something.
You felt the scratch of brick, arms enveloping the rest of you as you backed into the wall.
Hide.
All the breath in your lungs seemed to leave at once as you desperately tried to breathe it back in, hearing the air rush in and out of your mouth over and over. It was loud. So loud. The blast had been so loud. He had screamed so loud―
"Hey."
The hand on your shoulder was warm, free of any metal.
"It's... alright," you heard him say.
How could he say that?
"How can you say that?" Your voice was muffled. Wavering. Pathetic.
Would they believe you? With that stupid, pathetic, voice, whoever it was that found you ― would they believe you?
"How can you say that...?" you repeated, pressing your face further into your knees. The touch on your tensed shoulder felt offensive. Mocking.
"You're gonna be okay."
"How am I gonna be okay?"
"You didn't do anything wrong."
"How do you know that?"
You were looking at him now, breath hitched, eyes wide. You tried to sound frustrated, angry, but all that came out of your throat was a sound that told the Prowler "I am scared" in every language.
The Prowler hadn't killed you. He was comforting you. In any other circumstance, you could've laughed at the thought. To your knowledge, this Prowler hadn't killed anyone, or put everyone he loved in severe danger. Maybe you were worse than him.
"Why won't you answer any of my questions...?" you mumbled hopelessly, burying your face in your hands. You could smell concrete, dust, and ash ― invisible, yet incriminating.
Hiss... Click!
You felt hands wrap around your wrists, carefully pulling yours away from your own face. Just as you looked up, you could see the mask dismantling itself, disappearing behind his head.
What was left was a face. The Prowler's face.
No, this is...
Brown, maybe green-ish eyes. They were a smooth coppery colour under the dim light, bright among the shadows underneath his eyes. A black-red was drying on his skin, under his nose and creeping past his cracked lips. Two braids, coming unfurled at the ends, coming all the way back up to the top of his head. A soft face with harshness painted all over it. An exhausted, pained and worried expression.
"Hey, pana."
The face you had so prayed to see blurred into a watery mess as you threw your arms around him, squeezing your eyes shut against his jacket. His arms followed, settling over yours, one palm circling your back and the other settled between your shoulders.
You didn't think you'd held anyone tighter. You didn't know someone could hold to the point that their arms were shaking around you.
"Miles..."
You felt his head rest beside yours, the contours of his face melding against your shoulder. Warmth was running down your face ― blooming in your chest.
"I've got you."
Tumblr media
"Mij— Oh... Oh my!"
You'd scrubbed your eyes hard as you could, and Miles had fixed himself up into a giant hoodie and jeans, but you were almost certain that the woman in front of you was utterly convinced that the both of you had been run over by a subway train. Miles' mom, standing with a vacuum cleaner that contributed nothing to the silence. Her jaw was inching closer to the floor the longer the silence stretched out.
"Uh... hola, mami. This is my friend," Miles offered, not sounding any less like he'd been met face first with the headlights of New York public transportation.
"Hi, Mrs... Morales."
The woman propped the vacuum cleaner against the wall, letting out a quiet sigh. She had beautiful curly hair, and was now wearing the sharp-softness of her son's face in a polite, and concerned smile. You didn't want to turn to check if Miles still had blood on his face.
"Is this a bad time...?" you started. "I can—"
"Oh, no, no, I just... I haven't even made dinner yet, I didn't expect—" The woman lets out another breath, shaking her head. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't be so rude. What are you two... What have you been up to?"
"We just... you know," Miles gestured with his hands, charading less than nothing in the air.
"You know...?" she replied, eyes squinting.
"I uh, already ate. Don't worry about it, Mrs. Morales," you continued, giving her what you hoped looked like a smile on your face. "Miles just wanted to show me something. It'll be quick."
"Uh, yeah. That."
"You're not staying for dinner?" she called out, as Miles dragged you into his room. "I was gonna make pastelón—"
"I'll come help you in a sec, mami."
Miles closed the door to his room, and the two of you shared a look as you heard the long, muffled sigh from outside. With the sound of the vacuum cleaner whirring in the hallway and disappearing into another room, the two of you sat on the edge of the twin-size bed, the frame creaking uncomfortably.
The room wasn't particularly big, crowded with posters and various newspaper clippings — many about the Prowler. There were crates tucked away beside his closet, faces of toy figurines and comic books peeking out of them. A lone screwdriver sat on his desk, a stack of notebooks beside it. The backpack you'd seen him take to school was hanging on the back of his chair, a study guide for "Invisible Man" peeking out of it. All that was on his bedside table other than papers was a frame. A young boy, missing a tooth, on the shoulders of an older man, the two of them beaming through the picture.
"You hurt or anything?" he asked quietly, making you remember that he was next to you. "Like, injured?"
"No, I'm... fine." You took half of a breath before your lungs started to ache, swallowing back the dryness of your throat. Mostly fine. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah. My mom's a nurse, so... I kinda..."
"Oh... Yeah, yeah." Huh.
Mrs. Morales certainly didn't seem to know about her son's... part-time job.
You noticed a set of blueprints on the wall, resembling the clawed arms he had stashed away without you or his mom seeing.
"You made those...? The claw-glove things?"
"They're gauntlets."
It was somewhat like the tone of voice he used when he was explaining a calculus question — not condescending, but somewhat tired and fed-up.
"Right..." Gauntlets. Sure.
The vacuuming stopped, and a few moments later the clinking of cookware could be heard.
"You staying for dinner?"
"Huh...? Um, I don't wanna bother your mom."
"Please...? I'm gonna get it if you go home without eating." Something about that made you laugh, even if it was a half-hearted sound that fizzled out before it could really sound like one.
"She seems nice," you mused.
"She is. She tries."
Something of a smile tugged at his lips as a quick snort of air left him, his eyes now on yours.
"I got a lot of explaining to do, huh?" His smile faded a little as the words left his mouth.
"You do. Maybe... Maybe not now, though."
"Yeah. Not now."
In your peripheral, you could make out his arm inching closer to yours. The tips of his fingers just brushed your knuckles, leaving just a spark of feeling against your skin. His throat bobbed a little as he swallowed, and—
"Miles, ¡ven a cortame estas cebollas! (Come and cut these onions for me!)"
"Oh! Um— Okay!"
The bed squeaked again as he stood up, and you could tell he was biting the inside of his cheek. You closed your hand as the lingering feeling of his touch disappeared.
"...You sure I can stay for dinner?"
"You sure you just asked me that?"
"Alright, alright."
You gave him a little more of a smile, and you could see him fighting to not return it as he looked back at you.
"i'm gonna... go and—"
"Yeah, you do that, Miles."
He handed you his phone, or, a phone.
"You can... play some music, if you want. It's connected to that speaker. Just not too loud, yeah?"
You noticed there was no SIM card in it. He pointed to the little speaker sitting by the window sill, peeking out behind a hung up jacket and a school blazer.
"...Thanks."
The door to his room shut, and the murmured voices of Miles and his mom faded as you selected a song. You recognised some of them, ones you'd heard people sing along to on the street or in the cafeteria of your school. This one stood out, though.
It started slow, and the man's voice was rich, full of life and emotion. It was strangely melancholic against the uplifting instrumentals.
"~Ain't no love, in the heart of the city..."
You stood up, walking to the window to get a better listen of it. Lifting up the blinds, your eyes caught something in the darkness. A giant painting of Jefferson Morales. Miles' dad. It was half-finished, but his smile was there.
You couldn't help but think how he looked so much like Miles.
"~Ain't no love, cause you ain't around..."
An almost inaudible rustle caught your attention as you tuned to look at the jacket you had touched. Something had fallen out of its pocket while you were trying to move the speaker. It was a piece of paper, something written on it.
Reaching down, you moved to put it back in the pocket, before noticing what was peeking out of it.
Unfolding just the edge of it, you recognised the title of a Spanish lesson you had a while ago, back when Rafael had been bothering you endlessly. Opening it up entirely, you found what he'd been making fun of Miles for.
There were a series of drawings around scrawled Spanish vocabulary and messy grammar rules. One was of your teacher, Mrs. Hernández, turned away, writing on the board. The other was of the picture of the landmark in the article you had been given, "Arco de"-something. The colour of the building was done in yellow highlighter, but looked rather technical and accurate nonetheless.
The one on the back made you almost drop the paper.
It was you, with such a likeness. Some lines had been erased and re-drawn around your mouth, as if he'd been trying to decide on an expression. Within the creases of the paper you were holding right now, though, you found yourself smiling — just slightly, like if you'd been laughing at something with the rest of your class. Your head was tilted slightly downwards. The drawing version of you was just a little cuter than you were sure you looked like, Miles' stylisation making your eyes shine a little and your lips curve just the right way.
By the time your stomach had stopped fluttering, the song was coming to a close. You quickly re-crumpled the paper and carefully put it back into the jacket, walking over to sit on his bed again.
"~Ain't no love, in the heart of this town..."
"...You never come back this late, mijo..."
"...We just bumped into each other and started talking. You know, like how at the store..."
"...Your tías are different, Miles..."
He really does have a lot to explain, you thought to yourself, unable to stop the corners of your mouth from lifting up, just slightly.
Your questions would just have to wait until after dinner.

I just finished cc3 and I’m worried the next book will be about nesta. Why do you think the next book is still about elain?
Hello my darling anon! Congrats on finishing CC3, you have sent this to a rare bird in the wild who actually enjoyed the hell out of it despite the flaws. So I hope you had a good time!
I'm a bit nervous to show you guys this side of me. Well, I suppose I've been showing it, but to compile it in such a way is quite another ordeal. That being said, I have toooons of links and resources to share why, for me personally, it is so clear that Nesta's story is *not* over, and Elain's book is undoubtedly next. Both of these things are true, but it has everything to do with the direction of the multiverse, which is very tightly woven, and *not* ACOTAR 5/6, which has been in the works for near a decade. Save this. Come back to it. Take your time working through it. I'm giving you everything, anon!
We have two parts at play: ACOTAR and the new series, which I have no doubt in my mind is Twilight of the Gods (more on that later) so lets start with facts before we move on to theory.
I am positive Elain's book is next because Sarah's messaging has remained 100% consistent since signing on the ACOTOR spinoffs in 2016. Moving forward from ACOWAR, she wrote ACOFAS as a novella to "bridge the gap" between ACOWAR and the spinoffs, and set up the future of ACOTAR. That was completely true for ACOSF, where everything that was set up has come to pass or been expanded on so far. The introduction of the Blood Rite, Nesta's mental health struggles, Morrigan being assigned to Vallahan, and the continued escalation of Elain's relationship with Azriel and Lucien's with the Band of Exiles. We meet Emerie, we learn more about the struggles of the patriarchy in Illyria, so on and so forth.
Then, we have ACOSF. The first dual POV romance of ACOTAR. This was only the beginning of a long term plan of dual POV romances coming to fruition. Here is youtube video from early on in the process describing the spinoffs as standalones that feature a different romantic pairing each book, but form a backbone when united.
By 2020, after ACOSF was announced, Sarah reiterated again that the new spinoff series features a new couple each book, with their own miniature plot and romance resolving within the overarching story of ACOTAR. Here she also shares that she plans to write a *lot* more than what she is contracted for, and has a ton of different ships to choose from. You can watch that here.
And now we move to 2021, after ACOSF was released, and Sarah confirms she always planned to write a book about Elain here.
This is actually a great interview and one of my favorites. You can watch the whole thing here. Eva Chen is a real one.
As far as ACOTAR goes, Sarah has continued to confirm in multiple interviews that her initial plans regarding the spinoffs have not changed, and still largely follow that initial outline she pitched back in 2016. And it was always going to be Nesta and Elain.
I will reiterate, ACOTAR is its own series with its own structure. Every ACOTAR book will feature a new couple with their own romance story. ACOTAR will continue to be exclusively a romance series from here on out. A lot of people speculate a lot of things on the future of ACOTAR. That we'll get a big finale with a multi-pov, that the story will end after Koschei, that we'll have a Kingdom of Ash style book. None of this is true. Sarah is going to keep contracting ACOTAR books until she runs out of couples. If you think this sounds odd, keep in mind that SJM herself is a fan of and grew up on Nalini Singh, who has series that started in 2006/2009 and are still going, featuring a new couple each book:

So, this is not strange behavior for the genre, and I think SJM is excited to have an ongoing fantasy romance series like this. And I'm excited for us to read it!
So, no KoA multi-pov finale. No second Nesta book. ACOTAR is an ongoing romance series with an "unspecified number of books remaining."
Okay! Now let's talk about Nesta! Bone Carver voice: Nestaaaaaaa
I'm going to do something just for you, Anon. And whoever catches this in the next week or so. I left titkok as far as booktok/content making and whatnot and privatized all my videos with my face on them (for a variety of reasons. Some fandom/bullying related, some not) but I did a massive breakdown of SJM's publishing contracts and all of the lore for Twilight of the Gods build up. I did get some of my screenshots from other Tumblr accounts, and linked my sources in the caption! Give this a watch (it's long) and pop back over.
Obviously if you spend some time in the comments section, mostly the questions at large are regarding timeline. I'm happy to chat theory, but focusing on Nesta, it is incredibly important and specific that she had her role in CC3 and that she connected The Valkyrie to Midgard, aka Middle Earth in Norse mythology which is where Twilight of the Gods, aka Ragnarok takes place. We have seen Midgard, Hel, and I have no doubt we will see Asgard.
But take a look at the difference between Nesta and Azriel's journey in CC3. Nesta had a deep emotional arc with Bryce. She developed trust and a relationship with her that Azriel didn't. In the HoFaS bonus chapter, Nesta forged a bond and a relationship with Bryce's mom, Ember. Nesta and Bryce's development is what is important here: Nesta has now created the bridge between the Valkyrie and Midgard. Valkyrie are the chosen fighters of Odin in Twilight of the Gods- the war at Ragnarok.
Tumblr media
Twilight of the Gods is coming, fam. Crescent City three also revealed that The Mother, Urd, and Wyrd are all the same entity. The Goddess of all creation and fate. She oversees all worlds, and another important but oft overlooked element in the CC3 crossover is the frequency of the conversations about the Gods:
Tumblr media
So yes, Nesta still has a huge arc coming up baby! She is not done. No one is done. But the Valkyrie are gearing up to play a major role in TotG, not the next ACOTAR. I believe this also grounds the continuation of the tension between Nesta and Rhys, and these two powers at odds when it comes to making decisions. Rhys will protect Prythian first. Nesta is building the bridges to other worlds, and is willing to fight alongside them. Rhys has no relationship with Bryce and Midgard. Nesta does. And lets not forget the Pegasi!
CC3 was not about Nesta. It was about Bryce and Nesta. Giving the Starsword back to Nesta is simply because that is who Bryce had a relationship with, and will continue to have a relationship with in the multiverse, not because Nesta is getting another book. Honestly- who else was she supposed to give the sword, Mask, and Truth-Teller back to? Twilight of the Gods will feature characters from all worlds. Sarah confirmed it will be emotional to write because of the old faces we'll see pop up in her Today Show interview here. This interview was thoroughly structured and planned, and released on the same day as HoFaS.
Speaking of the Starsword, let's talk Azriel and his role in CC3. Azriel is now the only person we have seen carry both the Starsword (likely Gwydion from here on out) and Truth-Teller. Light and dark. The power that combined to unleash the magic on Avallen, otherwise known as the Prison/Dusk Court in Prythian. Nesta has her own sword, Ataraxia. We have not seen Nesta touch, wield, or use Gwydion. Only Azriel has.
There is only one other character at home in Prythian who has also wielded and used the full power of one half of that pair of weapons: Elain.
Nesta used Truth-Teller to cut off the kings head, yes, but Elain used Truth-Teller to travel through the shadows across a battlefield with no experience and no training. She held that blade, and it worked to her will, tapping into its magic.
Azriel also learned about the corruption of the Cauldron. This was his primary experience in the crossover- discovering that the Asteri, who force mates and curate bloodlines to create powerful offspring which they then churn through a soul meat grinder for food warped the Cauldron to enact their will. Azriel did not form a relationship with Bryce, or Ember, or form any sort of additional connections to Midgard the way Nesta did. His part of the story revealed the problems at home. His (likely) love interest is the only person who has used his blade there, while Azriel is the only person who has used Gwydion. Bryce notes that Azriel must have some Starborn blood in him. Silene confirms that the Dusk Court can only be nurtured and looked after by Starborn heirs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So while Nesta's compass in the crossover pointed to Midgard and her developing relationship with Bryce, as well as her clear willingness to work with her, Azriel's compass pointed home. It pointed to his lineage, to the corrupted Cauldron, to being one half of Gwydion and Truth-Teller combining, the Dusk Court. All of which points us to...
Yup. Elain.
If this STILL isn't enough for you, I have made a few additional posts regarding The Glass Coffin (aka Sleeping Beauty, which Bryce plays for Azriel in the HoFaS bonus chapter) and some, but not all of the little Elain coded details in HoFaS. You can find those posts here and here.
I could keep going forever. I can reiterate that there was not one but two ACOSF bonus chapters, and both were about Elain. I can talk about about the fact that SJM always planned to write a book about each sister, and ACOFAS was about- duh- each sister. But this is already so long and full of so many links and resources. The wrap up is this- ACOTAR is now an ongoing dual POV romance series. Until she tells us that is no longer true, it is true. A new couple each book. Nesta and the Valkyrie are key players in Twilight of the Gods. Sarah confirmed she was writing Crescent City and Twilight of the Gods at the same time. The multiverse is happening, and it just takes a little bit of exploration to understand where the characters are likely headed.
I'll end on this note. Azriel and Elain are light and dark. This belongs to them. The bridge of connection between them- Truth-Teller:
Tumblr media
Now look at how the combination of the Starsword and Truth-Teller is described in HoFaS, and tell me if it looks familiar to you:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And now alllll together again, fam! Who are the only two characters who have properly wielded and/or tapped into the power of the Starsword and Truth-Teller in Prythian?
Azriel and Elain.
I think that's everything. I hope this comforts you. I genuinely don't ever feel worried or confused. It is all so clear to me how Sarah wove this together, and I think it's absolutely brilliant. Eep! I just get so excited! So take a little bit of my excitement and release the fear. Half of the people making content on this blatantly hate one half of the next book and they willfully ignore that she has had one of the most beautiful, breathtaking, well foreshadowed and woven storylines in the history of SJM's writing. Of course that is only my opinion, but honestly, how could you NOT be impressed and excited?!
I can't wait. I just can't heckin' wait.
If you got through all of this, wow. You're the real MVP.

A Special Kind of Stupid pt. 2
Description: Bellara vibe-checks Lucanis while they prepare the evening meal. Part 2 to this piece.
842 words
Characters: Lucanis, Bellara, and Spite
Pairings: Lucanis x femme Rook looms heavily but is unseen
Genre: Friendship <333333
Content warnings: Pining, cuteness, fluff
WARNING: This may contain some very, very light spoilers for Veilguard pre-release gameplay footage.
As usual, this was written before the game's release.
That evening, Lucanis had cleaned up quickly in preparation for another long supper preparation session with Bellara. They stood in the dimming light of the sunset-stained kitchen surrounded by cold baskets of shrimp, oysters, and fish; laughing and recounting the day's battles.
After a few minutes of chopping fish and deveining shrimp for the evening dish - a seafood paella - Bellara started shifting awkwardly. They had spent enough time together by now for Lucanis to know there was something on her mind, but he didn't pry. He figured she'd get to it when she was ready.
“So. A little birdie told me you've been flirting with Rook.”
He nearly chopped off his fingertip, “Ah!” Dammit, Neve.
“Don't freak out! I just wanted to ask... about your intentions,” Bellara's tone was kind but her eyes were piercing, “She's under a lot of pressure, and there's a lot going on. So.”
“You're worried I'll hurt her.”
“Obviously, you'll hurt her,” Spite chimed in nonchalantly, “Or get her killed.”
“I just don't know what kind of man you are... romantically. You're a great friend,” Bellara started, “But, some guys are great as friends and terrible as lovers, you know?”
“Yes, I'm aware." His cousin's many questionable dalliances came to mind immediately. He shook his head to clear it of the past, “My interest in her is genuine.”
“What do you like about her?” She stopped her chopping, watching him closely.
He thought for a few moments, and then sighed deeply, “Everything.”
“Wow. That's heavy.”
“I tend to be intense about these things.”
“No kidding?” She cocked her head and smiled, “I guess I can see that. You're reserved. Intentional.”
Have to be with a demon in your head, he thought.
But the truth was that even before Spite complicated his life, he had been the same way. Always nursing some painful, tortured little crush. He never acted on them. He wouldn't have dreamt of it. And even if he had, he was certain that they wouldn't have reciprocated. The notion was almost absurd. He was a weapon. And weapons didn't take lovers.
Still, he wanted to tell her more. About how terrified he had been when he first noticed he was developing feelings for Rook. The endless nights he'd spent pining or trying to distract himself from pining, only to then be tormented by Spite about the pining. The eventual, slow acceptance of his feelings. Or the fact that, even now, he had no idea what he was doing or why it was that Rook seemed to reciprocate... despite everything.
Rook was a distraction and a curse, but of the very best kind. And the truth was that though he fought desperately to keep his feet on the ground, his heart had threatened other plans.
There were truly so, so many things he wanted to tell his friend about how he felt, but he couldn't find the right words. Nor the courage.
“Are you going to tell her what I've told you?” He asked, after a moment.
“Oh no! I would never interfere. And I'm not, like, compiling a dossier. Just looking out for two of my favorite people.”
“Aw.”
“Disgusting,” Spite snarled.
“Can I hug you?” Bellara asked suddenly, placing down her knife.
He looked down at his bloodied apron, “I'm going to get fish guts all over you.”
“He says, as if I'm not already covered in fish guts,” she raised an eyebrow.
He let out a little chuckle and set down his knife. Once he did, she basically threw herself at him, enveloping him in a huge, warm hug. It was an unusual display of affection for him. He could probably count on one hand the number of times he'd been on the receiving end of a hug from a friend.
“You're alright, Crow,” she murmured into his chest. After a few moments she pulled away, giving him a little tap on the shoulder. “Just take care of our girl, okay?”
He nodded warmly and she turned her attention back to her chopping board.
Lucanis was no stranger to the camaraderie that emerged between Crows. Relying on others to have your back in battle or to provide good intelligence by necessity resulted in a form of closeness. But there was something sweet, gentle, and intimate about his new friendships within the Veilguard. They were different types of people, he supposed. Ones that tended to be emotionally open in a way that made him comfortable expressing and doing things that he wouldn't normally. And in exchange, he found himself feeling full and satisfied in a way he didn't usually feel.
His warm feelings were accompanied by a rush of protectiveness. If anything were to happen to any of these people, he would run rampant and wash the streets red with blood.
“So, what are you going to name your kids? I'm thinking...”
He threw his head back and groaned, as Bellara burst into a powerful bout of laughter.
“Kidding. Kidding,” she giggled, “I'd be a great auntie though, and you know it.”

EPIC THE MUSICAL OPINIONS, VERY OPINIONS, VERY MINE.
IF YOU DON'T WANT SOME NEGATIVITY DON'T READ. THIS IS NOT PASSIVE AGGRESSIVE I SWEAR.
MOSTLY COMPILED AT NIGHT, SOME REVISION.
PLEASE DO NOT COME AT ME.
.....................
After this saga I'm left kind of perplexed about epic.
What is epic trying to say here? What's the musical's stance on ruthlessness?
Because it isn't very clear to me anymore.
Is it bad? Is it good and just? Is it a necessary evil? Is it worth becoming something monstrous just to achieve your goals?
The thing I'm trying to say is:
Is epic a tragedy or a triumph?
Until the vengeance saga I thought it was the former, but now I'm not so sure.
Throughout the story Odysseus takes desicions that either side with what I'll call the 'open arm mentality' or the 'ruthless' mentality.
He gets punished for both a number of times.
He kills Astianax so he doesn't have to fear his future vengeance.
He spares Polyphemus and that leads to 558 men dying.
He appeals to Circe's humanity and that leads her to freeing his men and helping him get to the underworld.
He sacrificed 6 men to Scylla and that leads to 'mutiny' and 'thunder bringer' where the rest of his crew dies and he ends up in calypso's island where she imprisoned him for 7 years.
First act of ruthlessness= good outcome
First act of open arms= bad outcome
Second act of open arms= good outcome
Second act of ruthlessness= bad outcome
(I forgot to add the sirens, that encounter is kinda strange tho.  Ody kills all of them but I wouldn't call that ruthlessness. Ruthlessness is doing whatever needs doing to get what you want. He needed to know how to get home, and killing the sirens after doesn't matter in that context. I guess it's good for future sailors? I'll count this as an altruistic positive I guess)
This breakdown isn't perfect, lots of other things happen and some things Ody does can't really be neatly categorized by this simple metric imo, but I'll continue anyway as it feels to me the story breaks down his actions in a sort of similar dichotomy.
All in all the 'good to bad' ratio seems pretty balanced, right? It's not always ruthlessness that wins the day, and 'open arms' solutions don't always work out.
So why does it feel like we're supposed to root for ruthless Odysseus? Why does it feel like the story wants us to believe that being the monster is a good if 'somewhat sad' outcome?
Why am I saying this? Well, it's 600 strikes.
Actually just- all the vengeance saga.
Why is what Ody does here supposed to be cool and awesome? Because, like, that is absolutely the angle here.
Complete with a, honestly absurd, anime power up and fighting-god-one-on-one moment.
Why does the story break down it's logic,  breaks suspension of disbelief (at least for me), to get Odysseus into a position were he can torture Poseidon into letting him go?
Wich?? Btw should not work??
Why is this how he wins?
Why are the ghosts of his friends and family no longer spectres of regrets for but terrifying promises of death?
What does this say? Was Odysseus wrong about their sacrifice? Was regret ever only a noose around his neck? I'm looking too deeply into this one lol.
In 'get in the water' we even get the obligatory appeal to Poseidon's mercy just to hammer down once again that 'open arms' doesn't work, even tho it's Athena's appeal to her father's mercy that set Odysseus free in the first place.
The saga ends with Poseidon asking Odysseus how he'll sleep at night after all of this and Ody, in admittedly the coldest line ever written on paper, says:
"Next to my wife"
...
This is cool.
Extremely cool even.
But that's kind of the problem I have with it.
The song ends in a badass way. This is meant to be the final zing to seal Odysseus' cool ass victory.
And in all of this, not once, does the story seem to recognize that...well...
Poseidon won.
Hell not even Poseidon recognized it!
I'm not even saying "OoOh if it was realistic Poseidon would have have won!" (Tho yeah, ask me about that, lol)
In the great ideological battle that's at the center of Epic: the musical, Poseidon was the ultimate victor.
Ruthless is what wins at the end, it's what gets Odysseus home. Odysseus might be a monster but he's a victorious one.
I feel people and the musical both don't really acknowledge that.
That even if Poseidon lost the battle he ultimately won the war.
Were is the irony? Where's the bitterness and sorrow? We're Poseidon's bloodied, mocking smirk revelling in his victory?
Is Epic a tragedy or a power fantasy?

. . .I could've sworn I did Ritsu's already. Apparently not. Yuri's one of my favorites and he's the one I chose in the beginning so I'm saving his for when I'm a little better rested(I have Monday off because of another doctor's appointment, so that's the lastest i'll post it)
RITSU IS SO. . .I LOVE HIM. I'll rag on him a lot because he's so tunnel visioned and just like. . .repressed. And he needs to touch grass(figuratively) but also. . .when you've been set from childhood to work and care only for your work and only know your work. . .it's understandable that he is the way he is. . . .
The way he changes as his affinity goes up is very repressed too. . .but you can still see the change at the end a little. He's a very stagnant character. . .but still interesting to look into the mannerisms of.
Hello: (the first time the game is opened after that character is set as home screen NPC. Only happens once per day, unless the character is switched out and back.)
"Any self-respecting inspector would stay comfortably ahead of schedule—I suggest you get into the habit. Let's go—there's no time to waste."
dude this is the 'you've logged in for the first time today' dialogue why are you assuming that i must be late! rude.
You've Got Mail: (whenever there's something in the inbox, usually Arena rewards)
"Did you check that notification yet? We could have a request from a client, so please do so right away."
Default: (requires no affinity, has no time constraints)
"I have been assigned to Sinostra, so I will not allow them to stand trial, no matter how villainous their actions. That is the Shinjo family policy."
"I shall ensure the Gala is held this year, and that Sinostra will wear the Laurel Crown. I have never made a promise I couldn't keep."
boy i can't wait for that to fall through--he, respectfully, needs the humbling.
"I've read the Compendium of Laws countless times since I was a child. Memorizing its contents is a rite of passage for the eldest son of the Shinjo family."
and somehow it ended up an artifact he can use as a weapon? I really wanna know what it does tbh.
"What business do you have with me? Please keep in mind that I charge 5500 yen per half hour for consultations, tax inclusive."
(roughly $35USD, although it's faster to just think of it as $55--) WE ARE BUSINESS PARTNERS. WHAT ARE YOU CHARGING A MFER FOR.
"As long as I have a notebook, my business cards, a binder, paper, and my voice recorder, I can handle the initial stages of any case."
i need my binder every day too ritsu.
Affinity 1: (between 5am and 11am)
"{PC}. Are you aware of the responsibility your position as inspector entails? I suggest you tidy your appearance and wipe that vacant look from your face."
they do not need to be aesthetically in order to be inspector. as long as they're paying attention it may even be better to look vacant. lure them into a false sense of security. also it's easier to pay attention if you're comfortable, in my experience. . . .
Affinity 2: (between 11am and 4pm)
"You've lost your notebook? Just a moment. ...At 9:04 AM, it was inside the photocopier. Yes, I do have that information recorded."
Affinity 3: (between 4pm and 8pm)
"Have you seen Taiga Hoshibami? Strange... According to my behavioral model, he should be in the casino at this time..."
Affinity 4: (between 8pm and 5am)
"At the end of each day, I compile information about every person I encountered in my notebook. It always proves useful eventually."
yandere adjacent behavior, except it's for everyone and not just one person lolol
Affinity 5: (between 8pm and 5am)
"The vice-captain has asked me to organize some documents. Let's start by making copies of everything in case the originals become lost or damaged."
Romeo has a line that references this as well!
Affinity 6: (between 4pm and 8pm)
"I always have my business cards on hand. It should go without saying—any lawyer who fails to gain their client's trust during the first meeting is not worth their salt."
Affinity 7: (between 11am and 4pm)
"A post-meal coffee must be drunk black. Unnecessary additives only interfere with the natural flavor."
Affinity 8: (between 4pm and 8pm)
"Until the age of three, I spent my days visiting the greatest sights the world has to offer with my mother, as from four my studies would prevent me from doing so."
is that child abuse? i think that's child abuse. you learn the source of ritsu's problems very early on in his affinity--he has had zero normal social interaction opportunities and no childhood. From birth until he stopped being a toddler he was just flying around the world looking at beautiful things, no stability in his location or world aside from the presence of his mother, and then he went home and probably basically got locked away to study law the moment he could sort of read. His whole existence was molding him to work. . .Subaru is similar, even down to what age they were forced to start preparing to work at. But Subaru is at least better adjusted, probably because acting awarded him better opportunities to try and think about how other people think.
Affinity 9: (between 8pm and 5am)
"According to my behavioral model, there is a 29% chance that Taiga Hoshibami is currently at the baccarat table."
Affinity 10: (between 10pm and midnight)
"I review the day's coursework for two hours then prepare for the next day's classes for three— no more, and no less. Six more minutes of silence, please."
WHERE DO THE RECORDINGS COME IN TO THIS. This mans somehow has 40 hour days. Maybe his artifact slows down time or something lol
Affinity 11: (between 5am and 11am)
"Good morning, {PC}. We have a meeting at 3 PM today, so please adjust your plans accordingly."
Affinity 12: (between 11am and 4pm)
"Darkwick Rulebook Article 183: "For the protection of anomalies, unnecessary running indoors is prohibited." This rule has been in place for over one hundred years."
wait how old is this school? how old is the Institute???
Affinity 13: (between 4pm and 8pm)
"All right. We need to organize our notes from today's investigation, so let's relocate to the diner. Our usual booth, of course."
Affinity 14: (between 5am and 11am)
"The content of our classes may be novel, but I topped the year in the scholastic ability test—they are nothing I can't handle."
so among the first years' scholastic ability tests, Ritsu was 1st, Leo was 2nd, Sho was 5th. Considering there are only four new first year ghouls then that must include the general students too. I wonder where Ren placed? Probably not very high. But still, Ritsu is a genius. . .or at least very very good at memorizing information. Lots of book smarts, minimal other smarts.
Affinity 15: (between 5am and 11am)
"As your business partner, I request that you improve your conduct. Please refrain from consenting to any further uncompensated labor."
Affinity 16: (between 11am and 4pm)
"Our Anomalous Law classes are truly fascinating. There is a long history well worth learning about— though of course, I have already mastered the basics."
Affinity 17: (between 10pm and midnight)
"I cannot afford to be complacent, even before bedtime. It's vital that I check the day's notes again to ensure nothing has been missed."
Affinity 18: (between 8pm and 5am)
"I set time aside in the evening to watch opera performances online. It allows me to get my thoughts in order, and provides a change of pace."
when??? what time??? because he has to review all of the audio recordings and notes from the whole day--what time does he have to do anything in???
Affinity 19: (between 10pm and midnight)
"I just finished checking my recordings from today. You sighed a total of four times— is something troubling you?"
i love the vibe of this. rather than silently nothing your sighing and potential exhaustion or scolding you for not caring for yourself, he expresses concern towards you. also, it's so soft yandere. like he already records everything you say and do, to confront you over it on top of that he shamelessly defends his recording and notetaking. . .if not for that he recorded everyone it would really be so yandere lolol. instead it's just his odd and overbearing way of showing he's beginning to care.
Affinity 20: (between 5am and 11am)
"You struggle to get up in the morning? I can contact you each day at a set time if you like, but I'll have to think about how much to charge..."
affinity 20 and my guy still wants to charge for his time. . .we're gonna have to teach him to have A Singular Normal Social Connection aren't we. and we're probably gonna fail.
Affinity 21: (between 11am and 4pm)
"You wish to have lunch with me? All right. We are business partners, so I will accompany you free of charge."
wait maybe i spoke too soon.
Affinity 22: (between 4pm and 8pm)
"This is for you, {PC}— it's the takeout coffee I often purchase. Your performance will decline if your mind isn't sharp."
his increased attachment is shown in the bare minimum of understanding normal human social interaction and caring for you by sharing his things and his time without charge. In trying to make you the best you(from his perspective) that you can be. Because that's what his parents did for him--so surely that's the best expression of love he has, aside from obsessive study and understanding.
Affinity 23: (between 8pm and 5am)
"I feel we made solid progress toward the reinstatement of the Gala today. Let's reconvene again tomorrow and continue working together to realize our goal."
Affinity 24: (between 10pm and midnight)
"Could I ask you to accompany me a little longer, {PC}? I realize it's outside of business hours, but...I would appreciate it if you could make a special exception."
He wants to spend time with you. And he's realizing he can just ask that. But he's so entrenched in legal and business mannerisms he doesn't know how to say "i want to be around you for longer". You're his business partner. It's bad form to request your attention outside of work, it has no value towards your goals and business efforts, but. . .that he's making a sort of formal appeal for your attention outside of work is as far as he can get in terms of expressing his affection right now.
Affinity 25(max): (no time constraints)
"It seems we make better business partners than I would have expected. I look forward to a long and prosperous relationship with you."
kind of comical that his max affinity line is still so formal after a more friendly 'please spend time with me late at night' 24th. . .but also, he wants you to be his business partner for longer. i think that counts towards something! It's a reason to stay with you! Maybe over the course of your business partnership he'll learn how to express deeper feelings. . .he's going to need an heir, after all--
Spring: (March-May) (between 5am and 11am)
"There has been a noticeable increase in reports of suspicious activity of late. More incidents means more business. Be prepared."
(between 11am and 4pm)
"You have a petal in your hair. A little more to the right. No, not there. Just let me remove it. Hold still."
(between 4pm and 8pm)
"Indeed, the cherry blossoms are in bloom. Incidentally, Japan's oldest cherry blossom tree can be found in Yamanashi Prefecture and is estimated to be 2000 years old."
ritsu would probably kill at historical trivia night.
(between 8pm and 5am)
"I had tempura at the cafeteria today. It didn't come close to the tempura I would eat with my father at the historic soba restaurant we used to frequent though."
Summer: (June-August) (between 5am and 11am)
"This one is for my face, and this is for my body. I have six handkerchiefs with me— enough for morning, noon, and night. I cannot let my opponents see me sweat."
why's this giving me ace attorney prosecutor energy. . . . .
(between 11am and 4pm)
"I witnessed a half-naked man running around in this vicinity. Did you see him? He is risking a charge of indecent exposure."
but we saw Kaito in his underwear and you said that meant he wasn't at risk of indecent exposure. . . . . . . .
(between 4pm and 8pm)
"The warmer it gets, the more of a racket people make. Honestly, how were these people raised?"
to relax and have fun during the summer break. . .you should give it a try.
(between 8pm and 5am)
"You want to go and watch the fireworks? A rather childish request, but all right. So? Where would one go to view them?"
FIREWORKS DATE FIREWORKS DATE just don't touch him without getting his consent first that could be counted as sexual harassment and he'll Get Your Ass.
Autumn: (September-November) (between 5am and 11am)
"The weather is much more pleasant for going out on professional errands now. A first-rate lawyer keeps their boots on the ground. Now then, let's get going."
(between 11am and 4pm)
"I object to the cultural assumption that fall is the season of the arts. The arts should be enjoyed throughout the year, regardless of the season."
you and yuri would get along well i think. until you realize the guy is a medical malpractice suit waiting to happen. then you'd criticize him and he would take that so poorly.
(between 4pm and 8pm)
"Once I've perused the relevant documents in the library, I plan on doing some reading. Please excuse me."
(between 8pm and 5am)
"The nights may grow longer in the fall, but daylight hours should not affect the time you rise and retire. I'll see you tomorrow."
Winter: (December-February) (between 5am and 11am)
"I have detected a change in how Taiga Hoshibami divides his time since the weather has taken a cold turn. It has created quite a quandary for me..."
yeah he doesn't like getting out of bed when it's cold. he also eats a lot more, like a bear about to hibernate. shockingly behavior patterns tend to change with the seasons.
(between 11am and 4pm)
"I've never experienced snowfall heavy enough to obstruct my movement, but I'd like to deepen my knowledge of the phenomenon for future reference."
to frostheim then! i'm sure that place is just awful for movement in winter.
(between 4pm and 8pm)
"I'm heading to the diner to fulfill a request from Ren Shiranami. Perhaps I shall enjoy a warm bowl of soup while I'm there."
. . .I wonder if this is an Obey Me!Raphael situation where he has no grasp of that the food is not good. . . .
(between 8pm and 5am)
"People say that hard work is the key to success, but it only took me a year to master German—as was the case with Italian and French."
His birthday: (January 13th)
"Indeed, today is my birthday. I've always celebrated this day by enjoying my mother's cooking, but from this year I am striving for a more self-reliant existence."
MAMA'S BOY MAMA'S BOY tbf up until he was 3 his mother was probably his only social connection and then he was locked away studying so. . .his mom is probably the only one he has like. . .personal feelings and attachment for. you'll be a tradwife too :) but also that he's trying to be more self-reliant at darkwick. . .that really does explain that he's like. not used to any sort of social interaction or doing things he hasn't been told to do by his parents. maybe in his time at darkwick he'll realize how good it feels to just. . .be a person. dedicate time to fun and relaxation. realize that work isn't everything. or maybe he'll be so judgemental towards the lifestyles of others he'll retreat even further into his current habits.
Your birthday:
"Happy birthday. A year older, a year wiser. I have high hopes for your performance in the coming year."
New Years: (January 1st)
"Happy New Year. Let's devote these next 365 days—or 8760 hours—to finding fitting solutions to the challenges that come our way."
what if it's a leap year. can we take the extra day off?
Valentine's Day: (February 14th)
"Thank you for the chocolates. Are you gifting them to me out of social obligation, or is this an expression of affection? Your answer will influence what you receive in return."
(for the uninitiated, that is very much a thing in Japan where on valentine's day a girl give some men in her life--like coworkers--obligation chocolates, which are generally not as nice and most likely store bought, although this practice is losing ground. friends get friendship chocolate and you give people you're actually attracted to or in a relationship more extravagant, expensive, or homemade chocolates to express your true feelings or a desire to be in a relationship with them. Ritsu is essentially asking 'is this because we're coworkers or are you asking me out' because White Day is the day for return gifts in response to given valentine's day gifts, and in the case of chocolates given to someone you wanna go out with they can act as a response to that proposal. presumably if you're asking him out he wants to give you chocolate to agree to get with you, since he's bothering to ask. . . .
White Day: (March 14th)
"White Day has its roots in Japan, having been invented by a certain historic confectionery shop. With that knowledge, please accept this."
'here's some trivia. and some chocolates. we are now in a relationship. should this be as fruitful as our business partnership, we can discuss marriage plans within the year.'
April Fool's Day: (April 1st)
"The spreading of false rumors is subject to strict punishment under Article 233 of the Penal Code. Do you still intend to continue this ruse?"
NO FUN ALLOWED.
Halloween: (October 31st)
"Coercing another party to choose between a "trick" or a "treat" could amount to intimidation. Engage in such festivities at your own risk."
NO FUN ALLOWED PART TWO: ILLEGAL BOOGALOO.
Christmas: (December 25th)
"Religious freedom is guaranteed by Article 20 of the Constitution. If this is a day that you wish to celebrate, then I will accept that."
he can't make you work on religious holidays you need off!!
Idle: (about 20 seconds without interacting with the game) (below 13 affinity)
"Five seconds have elapsed. Yes, that is how long you've kept me waiting."
(13 affinity and above)
"How long do you intend to keep me waiting? As always, I am on a tight schedule today. Please hurry up."
Absent: (logging in for the first time in 2 or more days?)
"I've been expecting you, {PC}. You weren't planning on breaking your promise to me, were you?"
SUCH A HARD-WORKING, SOCIALLY INEPT LAD. But Ritsu's a lot of fun, I give him a lot of shit and i desperately need him to touch some grass and get a reality check and learn about how others live and maybe experiment. . .but like i love him for being such a little shit. he's so. . .ignorant to the rest of the world and how other people are. . .i love seeing him try and dissect other people's behavior and intentions and coming to the conclusion that they must want the same things as him because he just. . .has no grasp of interests and intentions that aren't his own. . . . It makes me facepalm but also makes me laugh 8'D good boy. quality boy.

Lore Compilations (+ this blog's tagging/filter list at the end)
A WIP of a pinned post table of contents to tidy up the blog while I empty my fixations onto it plus a lore accuracy disclaimer (so I don't have to keep typing one), because why not. I like tables of content.
-
Disclaimer regarding lore accuracy: If you combine 50 years, 5 editions, 10+ settings, god knows how many novels, and then all the writers who all retcon and contradict each other's work then what you get is a clusterfuck. The lore I show here is compiled from all five editions of the game. You will likely see stuff out there that contradicts some things I say, or stuff I didn't mention/know. That's the lore for you. If you were the Dungeon Master making your own story, your job would be to pick and chose and build your own take on the setting out of it. I, personally, heavily favour older lore. Larian absolutely did this with Baldurs Gate 3 - frankly, I don't think they even know half this lore even exists, and Bioware took some liberties in the original games too. Wizards of the Coast themselves trample D&D into the ground all the time! All D&D is near enough fanfiction built on fanfiction. Therefore, if you find any information useful you may take it, leave it or tweak it to your desire for your own story, because it's D&D lore, and that's how it works.
Disclaimer regarding Larian's canon (and Bioware, and Obsidian): The setting shown in BG3 does not really match up to the setting as presented in sourcebooks (and sometimes novels, previous games, and 'word of god). I'm always talking about the latter and reframing the story and characters within the latter.
Disclaimer regarding asking me for my opinions on how [x] works in canon: I can make an educated guess based on the sourcebooks, but there are many gaps in many places and however educated the guess, unless it comes from a sourcebook, novel, or writer, it's just my own headcanon.

Tagging system:
Various lore things that don't go in the larger compilations are tagged lore stuff. Things that aren't lore will get tagged babbling.
For sensitive material, such as if I feel like poking at the various delightful topics presented in the game:
I'll use edgelord hours as the generic "reader discretion advised"
The tag villainous nonsense means Dead Dove Do Not Eat.
the family circle is an extra warning for discussing the themes and subtexts such as those present with Bhaal's cult and the Bhaalspawn: including reproductive horror and sexual abuse, including the incest.
When babbling about my ideas for a World of Darkness AU specifically Vampire the tag is wod shenanigans.
If I feel like posting anything I scribbled ("art"), the tag will be the scribbles
When I'm making posts and being negative or complaining about video games and trivial stuff, it will be filed as: griping.
Whenever I find or consider something new about the Dead Three and/or want to rant and scream insults at Bane again, my tag is the idiot three
When I babble about my characters, I tag it OCs, and the ocs are also tagged by name. So far I've only mentioned Vel
If I don't want to put my babbling about certain characters into the tags, I'll just put the / in front. /astarion, /orin, /gortash, /durge, etc
When I want to babble about stuff happening in my game as I play it, they're tagged playthrough shenanigans. The original games are bg2 playthrough shenanigans.
When I start talking about my oc's romance with Astarion I'll tag it petty murder boyfriends

(am i doing this right? (*・~・*) )
anyway, have a good rest of your day/night!!!
a/n: omg my love im sorry this took so long! i hope you enjoy, i wrote both but ill post it separately :)
Tumblr media
five hours. that’s how long your boyfriend’s been sulking and ignoring you and throwing mini tantrums every now and then. all because you liked to tune into youtube a little too much to look at a bunch of boys (“26, mind you! why do they need so many members anyway?” gojo would say) dance and sing at the same time.
“NCT U this, NCT Dream that, what about NCT Tokyo?” gojo paces the room the very first time you explain the whole concept to him — a group of unlimited members while some are sorted into specific sub-groups that represent specific concepts. gojo gets part of it, but doesn’t understand why they needed to be so attractive.
“they do have an NCT Tokyo, actually! newly formed!” you grin, knowing this information would only set him off, and since then, every comeback, every variety show, every photoshoot behind-the-scenes video that you blast on the living room television is enough to get your boyfriend in the most terrible mood.
but one thing that really sets the sorcerer off is your obsession with the canadian singer slash rapper, mark lee. you admired the work he put in — training since he was young and miles away from his family. he debuted at only sixteen and made a name for himself ever since then, always putting in his 200% for everything that he does. mark’s face shows up way more often than the group videos, gojo notices; a lot of the specific fancams that focus on his performance, or those fan-made compilation videos.
it’s not like you’ve been playing videos non-stop, either. you offered gojo to wave his white flag whenever you went to do chores, made lunch, did some reports, but none came.
so you might as well enjoy a few more videos until you break the ice. you reach hour four when you feel a little bad about the glares he’s giving the tv, seated on the far other end of the sofa while you enjoy the fancam videos of fact check.
curiously, out of the corner of your eye, there’s just a bit of change in your boyfriend’s expression, a scowl still deep on his face but his eyebrows are not as furrowed, eyes not as narrowed and squinted as he liked it to be. having dated since high school, you already know what’s going in that head of his — you know he finds mark at least a little attractive, but his pride wouldn’t let him tell you that.
“see anything you like?” you hear the audible gasp of gojo when you call out to him, letting the video go on not because you watched it a couple times already (while not entirely wrong) but you think gojo still outshines any k-pop idol on the big screen.
“no . .” he mumbles, sinking into himself more and more to prevent you from looking at his expression; but the foot-tapping, the secretive eyes, the head bobs all give him away. you know you’ve got him figured out when you scoot over and he doesn’t move, letting you untangle his fortress of shame shown in his body language.
“you can tell me he’s pretty, you know that right?” you giggle, lifting his arm to slot yourself under it. you fit just right upon his bent knees, looking up at the familiar frown on his face. gently, you peel away the blindfold on his face, greeted with the stark blue eyes that you find yourself falling deeper into each day.
you laugh at his stubbornness, a hand caressing his cheek as you try to contain your smile. even now, he’s not doing a very good job of catching glances at the television and sulking.
“okay, then, i guess i’ll just continue to watch my videos, then, since tomorrow is an off-day.”
“no! i-i mean . . uh,” gojo is torn between admiring your favourite idol and staying jealous, but he can’t formulate words when you stare at him like that; a crinkle in your eyes and just a sliver of your teeth while your eyes sparkle under the apartment lighting.
“ugghhhh . . i don’t know,” gojo buries his face in his hands, “why do you like him so much anyway? do you like him more than me?”
you hum, striking a faux pose of pondering and your boyfriend only whines again at that, accidentally putting down his knees and your support from behind you is made void immediately. if it wasn’t for your arms that hung around his shoulder, you would’ve landed on his lap pretty harshly.
gojo only huffs after also doing his part: an arm replacing his thighs to keep you from falling. there you hang awkwardly, still faced with gojo’s adorable pout, “mark lee definitely couldn’t have done that. i’ll tell you that much.”
you roll your eyes with a big grin, “oh, you big jealous oaf, c’mere.”
without warning you latch yourself onto him, slightly tackling him into a violent embrace with your lips on his and gojo sighs indefinitely like he’s been waiting all day for it. he just lets you have your way with him, letting you kiss him like you’ve never done before. he hums into your mouth, submitting to you as you climb into his lap.
“so i’m assuming you like me more than him?”
your boyfriend teases as you pull away, hands caressing your sides and sending chills right down to your centre.
“do you really have to ask?” you giggle, fully taking off his blindfold, now, brushing your fingers through his hair. through the corner of your eye, you see him play with the left and right buttons possibly to find a spicy playlist you two could get down to (his words, not yours), but before it can even start:
the playlist’s interrupted by an advert for nature republic with mark’s voice that plays through the speakers, panning out to eight other boys on a beach and smiling as if they’re aware of the torment they harboured.
your sorcerer boyfriend merely throws his hands up in frustration (“oh, come on!”), melting into the couch with a permanent scowl while the living room only fills up with your loud laughter.

Okay I'm so incredibly sorry for this but....
Let me talk about the Rui empty eye trained card phenomenon and why i've been studying it for years
As in how it's the weirdest thing colorpalet has done, weither or not this has any story meaning ig we'll have to see :')
This phenomenon describes how Rui is the only OC that isn't related to 25ji (and even for 25ji only Mizuki and Mafuyu have had this) that has had empty eyes in a trained card in his own event (even worse it happened Twice.).
The first incident was in Curtain Call, now while in the non transparent version there is some lighting his eyes do not have any highlights of their own. This can be seen in the transparent version where Rui's eyes are empty (the issue of transparent versions of cards will become apparent soon and I will discuss it later).
The second incident happened in Cyberpunk Deadboy...this time there is no real question about it it's just straight up empty eyes.
There is also the transparent version of Rui's detective set card which has empty eyes but since the non transparent version has highlights I've decided to not count it.
Now the weirdness of this phenomenon is made clear when you compare it to Literally Every Single Card in the Game.
And since I'm a normal person with normal hobbies and normal amount of free time, I've searched for literally any card to follows this issue Rui has.
The results however are staggering.
There are only few cards that come close to Rui's treatment and even then most are from mixed or are basically reaching.
-Akito's untrained from LUTF is probably the closest to an exception we have however Akito's eyes are shaded in a way that still shows light in his eyes.
-Emu's halloween trained is a weird one ?? The eyes are extremely stylised to make her spooky so it doesn't rlly end up looking like empty eyes at all though there are no traditional highlights. You could argue it would be the same for Rui's trained cards then but it's clear the context is wildly different.
-Shiho's Halloween trained card, the transparent version does have empty eyes but the non transparent version has highlights which means it doesn't count.
-Touya's White day card, the non transparent version has no highlights but the transparent version has one, basically same as Shiho but reversed.
Anyways the fact I had to reach this far just to find a counterexemple to the weirdness of how colorpalet has basically given Rui empty eyes in Half Of His Focus Events is pretty telling.
Does this have any meaning towards the story at large ??? No ???? Yes ??????? I genuinely don't know at this point, all I know is that this has taken years off my life.
Hope you have a nice day and apologies for the monstrosity I have left on your doorstep
Demo I'm going to start compiling your analyses and putting them on paper because this is Harvard research level shit I swear. You're the one and true Ruitologist in this fandom /pos /baffled and amazed
That is very interesting indeed... I can fully understand curtain call but as always cpdb set is an anomaly anywhere you look. I don't even know

"So you really think Hoffman's behind all this?"
"I think and soon I'm going to know for sure, I know it seems farfetched but you've gotta trust me"
Peter ran a nervous hand through his hair. You cringed placing your mug on the coffee table, it was about 1 am and you and peter were on the couch in the living room. Peter couldn't sleep, something he had refused to tell you about had been bothering him for what seemed like weeks now, so you finally sat up in bed and demanded he tell you, about an hour later and here you were.
"Peter I'm not saying I doubt you, you know I would never. I'm saying that accusing another detective and Hoffman himself of all people of being the literal jigsaw killer? Are you absolutely sure?"
"Look I know how it sounds, and I'm not saying he's behind it all. But that son of a bitch knows a lot more then he lets on"
"If Hoffman is behind all this I don't know how I feel about you going after him"
"Wait what? What do you mean?"
"Peter if your right and he's behind these new Jigsaw murders there's no telling what he could do to you"
"That's why I need to get him before he has any idea."
"You don't have any actual proof though, if you try to tell the chief that Hoffman is behind it he's gonna look at you like your crazy."
"I've been looking through the files, compiling things for weeks. You just have to trust me ok? I just need to build an actual case."
"Peter this is insane"
"You think I don't know that? I've been driving myself up a wall over this for weeks. I can't sleep, I can barely eat. If Hoffman is behind this I need to put a stop to it before he can hurt more people."
You sigh and pinch the bridge of your nose, you have known Peter long enough to know that once he had his mind set to something there was no stopping him especially when it came to a case. If Hoffman really was behind some of the Jigsaw murders you knew there would be no slowing Peter from going after him with everything he had.
Peter can sense the rising tension in the darkened living room. He knows he has to do this though, he can't let the Jigsaw killer continually slip through his fingers and massacre more people.
"Look honey I know ok? I know your worried about me and what could happen to me....and look I won't lie there is a good chance something could happen. This is the Jigsaw killer we're dealing with here, but I have to do this baby, I have to. This son of a bitch has slipped through my fingers for so long, it ends now."
"If something happens to you what am I supposed to do Peter?"
A question Peter hated to hear since the day he married you, but the validity was undeniable especially now.
"If there is ever a time where I don't come home to you I have an insurance policy I got when they put me on the Jigsaw case and there's cash deposits hidden around the house."
"You took out an insurance policy when they put you on the case...You've always expected someone to come after you then?"
Peter cringes but he can't deny it. He had done it as a precaution for you, so he could go to work with the peace of mind that you would be taken care of if anything were to happen to him.
"Yeah, at first it was just a precaution but now with Hoffman..."
"Peter I don't want some stupid insurance policy, I want my husband."
"I know baby, I know, but even without the Jigsaw case you knew when you married me that my job was dangerous."
"So I'm just supposed to except that your probably gonna get killed by the goddamn Jigsaw killer?"
"I'm not saying anything is going to happen, but we're supposed to hope for the best and prepare for the worst."
You roll your eyes at his attempt to lighten the mood but crack a small smile anyway.
"You're ridiculous Peter"
"That's why you married me honey...but in all seriousness whatever happens to me you'll be ok, ok?"
You sighed again but nodded anyway, You of course didn't want anything to happen to Peter but there's no stopping Peter and he was right, you knew there was a chance you'd end up broken hearted because of his job when you married him.
"I don't like this but this is what I signed up for."
"No matter what, no matter Hoffman or the Jigsaw killer or what. I will always try and come back to you, you know that."
You nodded again, really it was all you could do. You knew come hell or high water that Peter would stop at nothing to bring down the Jigsaw killer, be it Hoffman or not. You trusted Peter but you couldn't shake the sinking feeling of dread in your stomach that this wasn't going to end at all how Peter envisioned.

Pillow Biting
This is a compilation of MHA men getting around your relationship with your trusty pillow.
Warnings: pillow biting, rough language, rough sex, spanking, manhandling, voice kink if you squint, various pet names, anal
Pairings: Bakugo Katsuki x Y/N, Kirishima Eijirou x Y/N, Sero Hanta x Y/N, Todoroki Shoto x Y/N
Bakugo Katsuki
You could be a real pain in his ass sometimes. You had been teasing him all day with your texts. You even sent him a video right as he was heading out the door, saying you didn't want him to "forget what was waiting for him at home." And all of that had started after wrestling you off him when you found out how sweet his dreams were. He knew you would get pissy whenever he left without morning cuddles. But he had to oversee training for his interns. He had to set an example.
But you didn't give him an easy day. And after he got home, there you were, chilling on the couch all comfy and oblivious. He picked you up and hauled you over his shoulder, ignoring you half-assed "But I was watching thaaat". Your little games still didn't end as he kissed you down. With the way he switched from dry and wet kisses over your neck and collarbone, you couldn't possibly tone down your voice. But you didn't want to give the satisfaction, just yet. So you'd just hold back your voice behind an innocent little smile.
This little charade went on until he was ready to enter.
"You know, Y/N," he barked, his use of your name snapping your focus in two," you've been a slick bitch this whole time,"
He cocked his head to the side, baring his neck as his eyes narrowed," But I know you. I know every spot that makes you moan, so unless you been faking, tell me, why so quiet?"
You stared right back, lightly stating," You know why, Kat,"
He chuckled to himself. A cold chill raced through you. You hadn't heard that one, not unless he was about to fight. Oh. Oh no.
Without a word, Katsuki gripped you by the hips, flipped you over, and slammed you into the mattress. As you tried to prop yourself on your elbows to guage your surroundings, Bakugo's chest pushed into your shoulders, and the heel off his hand glued your face into the pillow.
"Since you wanna hold back, I better not hear a sound while I fuck you. Got it?"
You could only handle his initial thrusts. Once he sped up, your resolve crumbled, and moans flooded the crumpled pillow beneath you.
"That's what I fucking thought,"
Kirishima Eijirou
Tonight was a very special night. For your one year anniversary, Kirishima proposed a road trip out of country. It was your first big trip together and you were very nervous. But once you landed and headed toward the city, all your worries floated away. It was a busy day of shopping and sight-seeing, so by the time you had gotten back to the hotel room, and your bags were on the floor, you were expecting a cuddle bug of a boyfriend ready to watch foreign movies together. And, while his arms were wrapped around your waist, there was nothing innocent in the way he feebly asked, "Can I touch you?"
He'd just begun, but Kirishima was finding it hard to concentrate. Even though he made sure to spring for the presidential suite, meaning would be much harder for any neighbors to hear your little escapades, something about doing this in a hotel and not at home made you timid. Kirishima wanted to make sure you were comfortable, so, against his nature, he handed a pillow for you to bite as he laid you down. It couldn't have been more than three minutes, but he felt like it had been forever. And all because of that pillow. He just wanted to hear you, like he always did, but he couldn't risk you getting uncomfortable.
You seemed to notice his eyes darting around, and tapped his shoulder. He slowed to a stop.
"Are you okay?" he blurted in a flurry.
"I'm fine, are you? Do you wanna stop?" you asked," You seem distracted love,"
He let out a shuddered sigh, half chuckling at how cute you were, "I can't do this with that pillow in your mouth," he admitted.
"I know but I don't wanna get us kicked out on our first night,"
He sighed, pressing his forehead against yours, and started back up by slowly grinding into you. He could do this. He could be respectful. He could be- wait were you saying his name?
He grunted, ripping the pillow from your arms. Your hands attempted to replace the pillow, but he was quick to kiss you. You whimpered when he pulled back for air.
"Babe, I can't, they'll hear us,"
"Shh, just keep kissing me,"
Y'all kept it together until Kirishima bit your neck, which spelled your end. And he would join you, unfortunately startling an unsuspecting passerby.
Sero Hanta
When were they going to leave? This was just his luck getting you hot and bothered at a house party you were invited to. It was a sort of initiation into the Pro Hero inner circle. All his friends had been invited along with him, but he was absolutely floored once you walked in the door. You'd hinted you'd be fashionably late. It wasn't until he had snuck you into one of the guest rooms that he found out you were up to nothing good. He lowered you underwear to find a lavender nub peeking from your ass. It just took one look, and he got the message.
Just as he was beginning to feel like the luckiest man alive, a thump sounded outside the door. He'd barely bottomed out when he went rigid. He internally groaned as he defiantly turned his attention to your position beneath him. You looked like you heard it, too, but you never told him to stop. So Sero would manage shallow thrusts as he listened out for any cock blockers. But the sounds of your whines were making his eyes cross and his hips stutter. He caught a glimpse of you hiding your face in the pillow. Somehow you'd twisted your body away from him. And that just wasn't going to do. He was finally getting to have his lover, and he was going to get all of you.
Without breaking pace, Sero pried your arms from the pillow and wrapped them around his back.
"Scream for me, make me your pillow, baby. That's right, bite me,"
Turns out Denki was right, Sero had left with you.
Todoroki Shoto
You two didn't even make it to the bedroom. If you hadn't put your foot down about a "at least a shower, baby" then Shoto would've had you on his lap as soon as you got home. It was obvious he was feeling needy. You were fine with that, until you found yourself facing the reflection in the TV, holding to Shoto's thighs like a lifeline. You thanked God Shoto was too distracted with sex than undressing you properly, as you were afforded the sleep shirt that was currently keeping your squeals somewhat concealed.
Sadly, that didn't matter. Once Shoto had you throwing it back, it was over for him. His whimpers and incessant whines harmonized with yours beautifully. His arms snaked around your waist in an effort to keep you moving when your hips started to falter. The sound of his hips and his moans had your jaw dropping. Your shirt tail fell just as you reached your end. Shoto managed to slow down at the sound of you straight up mewling moaning as you finished beautifully on his thighs and couch.
He pressed his lips into your neck as you tried to catch your breath.
"Didn't know you could get so loud," He guided your jaw until you were looking him in the eyes,"Do it again, darling,"

do you have a quick link to information about Brokenstar, Runningnose, and Skypelt? I'm curious about the story behind Runny's acorn necklace and I want to read about Brokenstar becoming SkyClan's guardian, and how he was able to follow Firestar/help him restore SkyClan. i've been having a hard time finding it
I need to finish (or at least *reasonably complete*) the SE where Fire and Broken go to resurrect SkyClan. That is called Firestar's Quietus. Brokenstar's origin, which completely replaces Yellowfang's Secret, is called Brokenstar's Cataclysm and that's another one I need to complete.
The exact story has undergone a lot of revision SO I'm gonna take a quick break to try and compile some Best Hits of BB!Runningnose's and BB!Brokenstar's dynamic to get you up to speed, and make a definitive list of what's currently canon to Better Bones
And, because this is DEFINITELY the change that raises the most eyebrows and it's a good opportunity to make an intro,
"Elder Bones, what's all this I hear about your Not-Totally-Evil Brokenstar?"
He's still evil lmao, but he's not BORN evil in BB. NO ONE is.
BB is a story about culture. It's about a lot of things, family, anti-authoritarianism, xenophobia... but at its core, Better Bones is about how people impact culture, and how it acts on people.
Something I realized early in this process is that Canon Brokenstar, who is a born-evil punishment for SkyClan's exile (this is CANON, go re-read Yellowfang's Secret if you don't remember!), only made worse by abuse and enabling, does not effectively tell a story about culture.
Depending on your reading, Canon!Brokenstar is either a cosmic horror story or one about abuse. Could Yellowfang have saved him (and ShadowClan) with love? The book implies no, it was his destiny, just the medcat den was hers.
But looking at Canon!Lizardfang who let him get bullied*, and Canon!Raggedpelt who enabled him every step of the way as Sagewhisker held Yellowfang back, you could also read it as someone who was treated so horribly that he did horrible things to others. That he wanted respect and this is how he got it
So, okay, you could read that it's the fault of this bad woman, bullying, and this overly permissive dad that he became a baby killer. Problem solved?
HOWEVER... the Erins also refuse to actually write about people who unironically love his philosophy, because they don't want Brokenstar to be systemic. Blackfoot, the posterboy for a Broken-supporter, gets to reckon with how sad his childhood was and how he was only ever a mislead kitty who Truly Loved His Clan, as opposed to Brokenstar, who was Born Evil And Did Not Truly Love His Clan.
Blackstar's greatest flaw wasn't xenophobia, or hatred. He wasn't groomed by a society that glorifies violence and pushes a might-makes-right mentality. He just followed The Bad Person. With the death of The Bad People, society is fine :)
This is a recurring dichotomy. Leopardstar was good all along, Tigerstar was bad all along, Needletail was good all along, Darktail was bad all along. The Erins are not telling a story about how Clan Culture produces villains, or how it makes good people do terrible things, they tell stories about treacherous Evil People who always had a seed of badness inside of them.

-Onestar's Confession, Page 704
This is their guiding philosophy, and it's what Better Bones sets out to reject.
So, Brokenstar.
I realized while drawing him this one time that I was making him look too much like Tigerstar. Charismatic and puffed up, ready to twist the code to fit his own ends. Then it hit me-- why am I telling the same story twice?
BB!Tigerstar is the inheritor of Thistle Law, apprentice of Thistleclaw, with a backstory where he was a lonely, abused child and seeks respect to fill that hole. He's getting all sorts of reduxes to explore him, and the way that violent ideologies recruit (and prey on) angry and lonely people. Why should I just... have two Tigerstars, but one of them is explored less?
AND, I would waste the fascinating idea that Brokenstar is a manifested curse. Why remove something so cool, when instead, I could lean into that...? Then I started to realize...
Why didn't they ever connect Brokenstar to the resurrection of SkyClan, if he is this manifested curse?
So, enough preamble. Come below the cut and I'll tell you about the story in Better Bones so far...
BB!Brokenstar is not born evil. He is born angry.
He was ALWAYS going to happen. His birth, his ambition, and his fury were inevitable.
This is a curse that was laid generations ago, at the end of Ripplestar's Rot.
The last-ditch attempt to save SkyClan was literally crushed by StarClan itself, blasting the base of the blighted 5th Tree of Fivetrees and sending it toppling down to smite Ripplestar.
That tree was the symbol of SkyClan and their place in the forest. All the love, comfort, and memories that they had ever put into that oak had a power of their own-- and they took form on that night.
Brokenstar is not the only "entity" of this type. Star Flower, eons ago, was another. BB contains many new types of entities beyond, and even adjacent to StarClan. Gods, curses, guardians, other religions of equal standing...
But he needed to be born to someone. In return for Dawnstar's kindness, taking in Cloudstar's young children (Re: Ripplestar's Rot), ShadowClan would be the eye of the storm.
And it would be a Cleric who bore him, just like Larkstripe, who had been cruelly separated from her only kitten.
Yellowfang, Shroompelt at the time, this was before her Dishonor Title, saw when he was born that he was furious. She'd never seen a newborn look so angry.
In Brokenstar's Cataclysm, she only gets the opening chapter. It's enough to establish how Sagewhisker pressured her into the role, the lengths she went to in order to keep this secret, the reason for his name despite it not matching his tail.
NOTE: Brokentail's name, Kanochswash, means Broken-in-half-tail. He has two breaks in his tail, making three segments. It matches the way the oak was broken, once at the base, again against the rock, but it is actually obvious in Clanmew that his name does not refer to his tail.
Or, it's obvious to Lizardstripe at least... who is VERY different in BB. Old followers will know, she is a very loyal friend of Bluestar herself, and a member of her inter-Clan friendgroup, the Forget-Me-Nots.
She really doesn't want to be in this situation, doesn't LIKE being a mother, and Mudfoot is unhelpful... but she's the most perceptive of the Forget-Me-Nots. She hears that name, sees Shroompelt's distant eyes, and it clicks. She sometimes looks for things to complain about so Shroompelt has an excuse to stay in the den for a while.
But Lizardstripe is not raising Brokenkit. Raggedstar is. Raggedstar is Brokenkit's Mi, and Raggedstar alone. He's pointedly adamant about that, and as soon as Brokenkit doesn't need round-the-clock suckling, he started sleeping in the Leader's Den with dad.
Unfortunately, being the golden child of the leader did not pair nicely with Brokenkit's short fuse.
And he made a little friend.
What first drew Runningkit to Brokenkit was that he was very large. Runningkit LOVED pissing off one of his siblings, and then hiding behind his bestie who was younger than them but already as big as a stump.
When Lizardstripe tried to do anything about this, Raggedstar would get pissed off at her, insisting that his son needed to be with his friends.
Together, the two of them learned they could do whatever they wanted, as long as they stuck together. With Runny's brain and Broken's brawn, they weren't even a year old and already unstoppable.
And their idea of "unstoppable" was... mostly getting seconds when they'd already eaten and pushing against the horrors of bedtime. Sneaking out and collecting acorns. Being allowed to practice with the warriors.
Even better, since being the leader's kitten meant everyone tended to be extra nice to Broken to butter up to Ragged.
If they got what they wanted, they were sweet to adults. But from watching her son, and from being friends with Lizardstripe, Shroompelt knew that they could be vicious when they wanted to be.
And from a young age, Brokenkit knew that he needed to become Brokenstar... and Runningkit promised he'd get him there.
You might be noticing something.
Brokenstar was always loved, very, very much.
Spoiled? Absolutely. A little bully? You bet.
Not yet more than the sort of things angry, spoiled kids get up to.
The point I'm meticulously building here is that BB!Brokenstar WAS LOVED, and he loved in turn.
It won't stop what is about to happen.
Brokenkit was only a few months old when his father became leader, after Cedarstar was killed in the war with WindClan. Heatherstar wanted the Mothermouth Moorland; a floodplain just beyond the Carrionplace, which grows flax and many other medicinal flowers.
It was something the two clans had fought over before, that IS the code's Right of Challenge, but Heatherstar wanted all of it. She'd even killed the practice of tunneling to dedicate all of her forces to take it.
If you are not strong enough to keep something, you do not deserve to have it. This is what the Code says.
And strength is what Brokenkit quickly learned.
Taking extra bowls of food means nothing in the fall when the prey grows fat, but ShadowClan's marsh freezes fast.
You can't whine up a second bowl when not everyone even got a first.
Do you defend your territory? Or focus on survival? When the challenges are frequent, you have to go without eating to defend them.
And yes, you're hungry, but it's for a reason.
Brokenkit wasn't out of kithood when he saw his first death, because people were already dying before he was born.
In skirmishes, in hunting accidents, to infection because they didn't have enough herbs. Starvation in winter.
From a very young age, he was taught this is the way of Clans, and this is because of WindClan.
And his ambition to become deputy only became stronger. Runningpaw hatched a plan to get into the Cleric den, against Shroompelt's will.
Brokenpaw got into fights at Gatherings over ShadowClan's honor, enthusiastically bowled into battle against WindClan raids, became Raggedstar's best little rat hunter.
And he saw clanmates he loved dying.
Over many years, through his warriorhood, into his deputyship.
Cloudpelt, Foxheart, Toadskip, Nutwhisker. Lizardstripe was killed during an event called Heatherstar's Last Stand, her neck snapped by the WindClan warrior Flytail.
Heatherstar died, and her much more reasonable and peaceful deputy, Tallstar... continued to keep the Moorland she won.
ShadowClan went through that last winter, again trying to win their land back, but beaten so hard they couldn't mount a resistance. More cats collapsed in the snow, Mudfoot was one of them.
WindClan won. The land was theirs now. Out of his magnanimity, Tallstar reached out to Raggedstar and made him an unprecedented offer. He would give him a tax of rabbits, for peace. ShadowClan would stop attacking, and formally acknowledge that WindClan was the victor of the war.
A peace deal, a surrender.
Tallstar didn't have to do that. If his Clan won, it was his land in the eyes of StarClan. He had no obligation to reach out in this way, and Raggedstar acknowledged that.
But it made Brokentail SICK.
He couldn't believe that Raggedstar was going to buy this, let WindClan keep THEIR LAND and just send them back some of their own rabbits. What happens next?? What if WindClan decides to come further south, what then? What will Tallstar ask for next? What price will his warriors pay for the blood they spilled?
And this is the moment that Brokentail kills his father. On his last life, frail and weak after an entire life of fighting, he decided that the last kindness he could give him was a quick death, preventing him from taking that deal.
Runningnose sprang into action as soon as he'd been told about it; helping him to cover up the murder.
And together, they turned to TOTAL war.
Once, as an apprentice, Brokenstar recalled the words of a warrior at a Gathering. A parable of thistles-- how they don't care what attacks them. They don't hold back. How they will choke out the whole field who they can thrive.
Is that not the conclusion of Might Makes Right? If you can, you must, before they do it to you.
An apprentice becomes a warrior-- stop that from happening.
Don't let your enemies escape to fight again-- kill them when you have the chance.
Their herb stores are just as limited as yours-- dwindle them with infection and poison.
WindClan Must Pay, every single one of them. All the Clans are tomorrow's rivals, they have to go too.
Everything is for ShadowClan, and he was LOVED for it.
well.... by many.
This is about Brokenstar and Runningnose, but I must mention that there's also a lot of people who oppose him. Who realize this as evil. Nightpelt, Cinderfur, Deerfoot, Dawncloud and Stumptail are some of them.
And, importantly, Shroompelt was one of them. Whenever she learned of some code-breaking thing they'd done, she would make waves about it.
The word of a Cleric has an immense amount of weight, and it prevented Brokenstar from ending this war once and for all.
So Runningnose, as always, constructed a plan. Brokenstar decided it was a sacrifice that must be made.
Marigoldkit and Mintkit (kits of Rowanberry and Clawface) were in the Cleric's den for an infection.
Marigoldkit was a blind girl, and very fussy about taking her medicine.
Shroompelt would serve it to her in a berry capsule, either knout or rasp, a naturally red berry one.
Runningnose simply swapped her medicine with yew, and made sure that Mintkit was able to witness his sister being fed red berries over many days.
When Marigoldkit died, Mintkit was a distraught child who could only communicate that Shroompelt fed her "Red Berries," like the ones he'd been taught to stay away from.
Shroompelt IMMEDIATELY turned on Runningnose, accusing him of killing a blind kitten.
And he turned it on her. She'd fallen right into his trap. "You did this! You've been wanting us to stop fighting WindClan, and now you've stooped so low that you're trying to get rid of StarClan's only other messenger! You've killed your own nespring!"
Many cats of ShadowClan had completely lost patience with her before this, and were now shocked to see that she'd do such a thing. While some suspected the truth, in the end, Brokenstar's word is law.
And his law was that he would show mercy on an ex-Clanmate. But from here on, her name was Yellowfang, so that the world may be forewarned that StarClan rotted her teeth from so many lies as she walked in exile.
Brokenstar's Cataclysm ends on the WindClan Massacre. A bloody event where well over a dozen cats are slaughtered, and Brokenstar resurrects an ancient practice at the bellowing request of his warriors-- Kitten Stealing.
(The only time BB!Brokenstar uses a child soldier is during this battle, apprenticing Badgerpaw early so that he can participate in the all-out assault.)
With WindClan gone, he turned his sight on the other two. The Clans were cursed to die as they lived-- overpowered by a stronger, more bloodthirsty tyrant, violently driven out just as SkyClan had once been.
From there, the rest is very close to canon. Brokenstar is deposed by a coup, one that NEVER would have succeeded if it wasn't for Bluestar and her apprentice, Firepaw. The Curse is thwarted by change. Cats of different Clans working together in the name of righteousness.
Bluestar could have gone, grabbed the kits, and come back, but she knew that WindClan would never be able to return if Brokenstar was still in power.
This time around, ShadowClan's plague was intentional. Runningnose infected Nightstar on purpose.
He wanted to eliminate a weak leader... and a treacherous rogue who had defied his own.
Collateral damage was acceptable, if it eliminated as many of Nightstar's supporters as possible.
And yet, his brother Deerfoot survived. Sentimentality? Just luck? Who knows.
If Runningnose has any regrets for anything he's done, it's only this. That he cleared out ShadowClan for Tigerstar's rule.
He approved of him at first, interpreted signs to benefit him, even killed for this old ally of Brokenstar...
but Tigerstar's goal was to abolish ShadowClan, and make a TigerClan of his own. Brokenstar never wanted this, and neither did Runningnose.
What Runny really wants, more than anything, is what Brokenstar wants. Destroying WindClan is a bonus, eliminating all of their enemies is anger that they were able to obstruct him. Runningnose thinks he loves power, but what he REALLY loves is his ability to get Brokenstar what he wants.
Everything he's ever done has been in pursuit of that goal. He doesn't care that he'll be going to the Dark Forest in the end, that's where Brokenstar is going to be. Hell is wherever he isn't.
In life, neither one of them knew anything about the curse, or destiny. Brokenstar reconnects with memories in his death.
And he started having dreams of SkyClan, which he communicated to Runningnose through channeling.
I'm working on the full outline of Firestar's Quietus right now so I'm going to be a bit more brief;
Runningnose got Firestar involved on this quest because he's a little goody two shoes. Of COURSE he would agree to help... that's who Firestar is.
He brings him to the moonstone, where a scene similar to canon plays out where StarClan tries to encourage him to go back to his Clan and ignore what he now knows.
And, of course, he tells them to shove it.
Firestar's Quietus is a book about righting wrongs. Brokenstar as a curse means that what he needs, in the end, is peace.
The peace he needs is the knowledge that SkyClan will be saved, and that it will survive.
Runningnose is willing to let him go, in order to get what he needs. He passes off an acorn necklace to Firestar, so that he can channel him with ease on his journey
In this gesture, it becomes real that he will go to an afterlife without him. After all he'd ever done and been through.
So, he hesitates before handing it off, but makes Firestar promise to take good care of it.
On this journey, Brokenstar and Firestar do a lot of bickering about how SkyClan should come back. The sort of values they should have, who should lead it...
But in the end, Brokenstar realizes, they will be something new. They'll choose their own path in life, because that's what it means to be alive.
And his final action is to face The Rats, now supernatural creatures of their own, finally dispelling the threat that faced SkyClan.
Having done his job as a Guardian, he can finally rest. His necklace is buried overlooking the Gorge, returning SkyClan's guardian to them.
Eventually he falls during AVoS, in Darktail's attack, killing several of the kin and their rebels and allowing Leafstar and co a chance to escape.
For more on Skypelt, see this little guide I made on the afterlife locations. Hopefully one day I can clean this up into its own entry.

Phantomime is the band's third album of covers, after If You Have Ghosts and Popestar. Cover songs are usually the preserve of young, inexperienced bands. Is doing covers a way to maintain a link with your formative years and not forget where you come from?
Tobias Forge: Absolutely. I think it does that. It serves as a return to the roots, in the same way as for... I don't know, let's say someone who practices martial arts, who starts in a certain dojo and ends up changing it. If you want to become a good fighter, you have to move and train with different people. It's the same for a footballer: if you play with the same team all the time, your team might be very good, but you always have to play against others. I think the same logic applies with covers: it can help to go back. You don't necessarily have to release them. We chose to do a real album, but in parallel I worked on other songs - not only Impera music, but other covers. We selected the best ones, and said, "Let's put these out; this looks coherent and presentable".
How much did learning to play other artists' songs contribute to your formation as a musician? What were the most formative songs in your youth?
The answer to the first question is yes. Listening and playing at the same time is very formative. I've never really been... A lot of guitarists, especially, take the time to read tablature and learn how to play something very precisely, and in my opinion, theorise the music too much. I can't say that I'm not theoretical; I just don't follow the rules or the classic terminology. I try to categorise and understand the logic, but I do it in my own way, based on what I have learned over time. I never spent much time with tablature; I just played to the music. I would put the music on and play. I wasn't trying to learn how to play the song in the same way as the band. I would play as if I were invited to play with them. So my style is very free, because I played The Doors as well as Kiss, Slayer and DJ Bobo! It could be anything. Whatever I heard, whatever I listened to, whatever song I could get my hands on, I would play it. I think the chaos of it all made it... When you understand that, you understand the way I write, the way I do things, and why I sometimes seem to be a bit scattered.
That's what may surprise you when you listen to the EP: you can find Iron Maiden as well as Tina Turner...
Yes, I grew up with both, so it's not strange to me. But of course, in order to go from just wanting to do something to a homogeneous work that is supposed to have some commercial appeal, you have to make decisions. One of those decisions was, "If we're going to do this Tina Turner song, it really needs to be punchy." It's supposed to be a rock EP, it's got to be set to 10. I think that's what sets this cover apart from the moose. By the way, thematically, I didn't think of it as 'a Tina Turner cover', but as 'the Mad Max song'. It fits with the times we're living in.
Phantomime features a cover of Iron Maiden's "Phantom Of The Opera". Two years ago, you also recorded a version of Metallica's "Enter Sandman" for the Blacklist compilation. In rock, people like to pit the Rolling Stones against the Beatles, and I think the metal world tends to do the same thing with Metallica and Iron Maiden. Do you feel more affinity with Metallica or with Maiden?
[He thinks] Good question. I'm trying to formulate a coherent answer. I think... It's so fifty-fifty. Both. Not just in terms of inspiration, but in terms of their whole careers, especially when I was a kid. In many ways, like many fans of both bands, there's a cut-off date where my interest in new music started to wane. But I have such a love for everything they did before that it doesn't really matter. The limit is basically the Black Album and Fear Of The Dark. I mean, I like The X Factor, and Brave New World was an absolutely great comeback album. But as a kid and a teenager, settling down with Live After Death was such an inspiration - not just for what I was hearing, but for the tour dates and everything to do with that. Same with Metallica and the Black Album. That was the first time I saw them, and it was the first time I was confronted with commercial greatness in metal, when a band is on top. It's happening now, they're the biggest band of all time. They're playing in such and such an arena, but when they come back next year, they'll be doing such and such a stadium. Even back then, I had a hunch that not only were they great, but they were doing well in life. These guys are getting richer by the hour [laughs]. That's the kind of thing that matters when you're twelve. "And imagine all the girls they get!" That kind of nonsense.
And of course, these bands inspired me musically and professionally and brought me a lot of joy, but they also became mentors in my professional life. I have so much gratitude and respect for those two bands. If I were to be super picky and specific, I would say that since we are a more melodic band, we are probably closer to Maiden. Metallica is more of a "speed" band, I think. To be honest, what I've always liked most about Metallica, and especially on my favourite albums, which are a lot of people's favourites, is not the speed. The speed and the violence on those albums are just added value. The reason their music was so great in the 80s was because it was so melodic. It's the melodies. What changed in the 90s was that they stopped the melodies. They became a blues band, and all of a sudden all the movements were different. It wasn't neoclassical like in the 80s or on the Black Album. I'm very neoclassical myself, that's why I feel so close to the melodic side of Metallica. On the other hand, I spent my teenage years listening to death and black metal, so I love big riffs and speed and stuff like that, but that's not what we do with Ghost.
For a long time, fans have been asking who could be the Maiden or Metallica of tomorrow. Considering the impressive success of Ghost, do you think you have an answer to that question?
Obviously, I know that George Lucas and Steven Spielberg will die one day, but I don't think Wes Anderson or Quentin Tarantino can be considered as a replacement. These directors don't have that much in common, but you know what I mean, I hope. I don't see us as taking their place. You know, I try to be as transparent as possible. What I do is very much inspired by those two bands. I try to do it in a different way, and with respect. But of course, from a practical point of view, when the day comes when there's no more Iron Maiden and you want to see a rock concert with staging and solos, you can come and see us. It's a very curious concept, but it's obviously relevant, because we live in a time when the previous generation is disappearing one after the other. I think Lars [Ulrich] and James [Hetfield] have spoken about how the physicality of their music is not the same as the Rolling Stones. Charlie [Watts] playing the way he played when he was seventy-nine or eighty, it's nothing like what's expected of Lars. And what is expected of James is also very different from what is expected of Keith Richards, with his very open chord style. The meticulousness of James' riffs and Kirk's solos can be difficult to achieve at eighty - and they're approaching sixty. Kirk already has them, by the way. So, as much as I don't want to think about it or remind people, nothing lasts forever. Sooner or later, fans are going to have to decide which bands they want to go see, because a lot of the people they grew up with won't be around anymore.
Your cover of "Enter Sandman" was very "ghostified", while "Phantom Of The Opera" is more faithful to the original in comparison. How do you decide how to approach a cover? Are there songs that offer more latitude in terms of arrangement and appropriation, and others less?
There are several factors, which differ from song to song, and the result can therefore be different. If you go back in time and take "Waiting For The Night", for example, I always thought that song in its original form... Obviously it's cool, but I thought there was a bigger song underneath. In the original, it's diffuse, vague, underlying. The chords are just hinted at, and the vocals suggest that you can build something bigger around it. When I did the cover with Dave Grohl, he asked me, "Can we do a really slow version of it like Trouble?" I said, "Yeah, that sounds cool." And of course, working with Dave Grohl, it seemed like a good idea at the time. In the end, we thought it was too slow, too heavy and too long. It was a good idea, but the result was not very convincing.
Enter Sandman' and 'Phantom Of The Opera' were conceived in two different ways. If someone had asked me to do a Metallica tribute, I would have accepted, but I would never have chosen 'Enter Sandman', in the same way that few people would choose 'Paranoid' or 'Smoke On The Water'. You automatically try not to pick the biggest hit. But in this case, it was Swedish television that asked me to play. It was for a music award, and they said: "Since Ghost and Metallica are close, you are seen as friends, so you should open the show. And we want you to play their biggest song, 'Enter Sandman'." I asked, "Do I have a choice?" And they said, "Not really! We want you to do it, otherwise we have to rethink the whole show. Could you think about it?" OK, I'll think about it and see what I can do. So I started to play the song and see what I could get out of it. The original structure of the song is very simple, and the melody, like "Waiting For The Night", suggests chords that they don't play. All I had to do was see which chord suggested the melody and fill in the gaps. I ended up with a five-minute arrangement. If I sing the melody with a guitar, this is what chords it suggests. That's the somewhat academic version of the song. I was at the stage where I had a completely different version of the song, and I recorded it and thought, "Fuck, I hope James doesn't hate it..." Because I don't want to disappoint anyone. It's supposed to be a tribute. My version was like, "You guys have all my love, but I was forced to do this! And in the end, the result was great.
"Phantom Of The Opera' was a bit different. I knew I wanted to cover a Maiden song, but not just anything, of course. I wasn't going to do 'The Number Of The Beast'. I've had fun with 'Phantom' in the past, because it's a long song and quite complicated. As a musician, it's quite common to sit on the couch and try to figure out a riff. What are they doing there? [What's the rhythm? How are they counting? Because I couldn't hear the beat. And suddenly, once I understood how the beat works in this song [he sings the riff while snapping his fingers], I thought: "Wow, you can't hear that at all on the record. You can't hear anything, it's just a controlled mess." I managed to figure out how to play other elements of the song, and I was like, "Now I have a reason to record it. Not because I want to improve it, but to come up with a different version where you can clearly hear the different parts." First of all, it was a personal experiment in the studio. I wanted to record it to see what it sounded like, and suddenly, after working on it for a few hours, doubling the guitars, adding the drums and playing everything perfectly with metronomic precision, the track was different and a bit updated, so to speak. So I said to myself, "I'm going to take the gamble of covering this song, and see what happens. It seemed like a good reason. I'm not saying my version is better, I'm just saying it's different. There's a bit more contrast and fluidity, you can hear the different elements better. It underlines how good the song is.
Phantomime's covers also include Genesis' 'Jesus He Knows Me'. Genesis is a rather peculiar band, which started out in progressive rock and ended up with huge radio hits. Do you find yourself in this ambiguity, in this duality?
Yes, I do. The other band on that level that did something similar is Pink Floyd. In the beginning, their music was really strange, really eccentric, and then they became more and more pop as the albums went on. People still mistakenly think they're a prog band, whereas 'Wish You Were Here' is really just a series of four pop songs stretched to the max. Not only am I very inspired by that, but I also feel an affinity with that kind of thing. You try to come up with variations of the traditional, if you like. You try to change the form, to present elements that people know in a different way. It's a bit like running a fusion restaurant and offering an Asian-inspired onion soup and adding coriander to the dish. It's still recognisable, but you try to make the recipe different. Another analogy is Stanley Kubrick, who told stories that weren't very complicated, but presented them in an epic way because of their façade - literally. It was the choice of set and costume and the attention to detail that made the difference. That's why, as a composer, I always try to go back to the simplicity of the writing; the simplicity of 'Another Brick In The Wall'; the simplicity of 'Comfortably Numb'. It sounds like a huge, epic song, but it's not complicated at all. They have a lot of songs like that. For a lot of songs in the Genesis catalogue, especially in the later part of their career, the only thing that makes it a bit weird is the middle part. In "Jesus He Knows Me", that's one of the things that made me want to... Not only have I always loved that song, but there are three factors that made me want to do my own thing with it. One: it's a very upbeat rhythm. The way they play it is so quiet that it literally sounds like they're playing on the table [he beats the rhythm on the table] with an acoustic guitar. There's a real metal track in there.
Do something with those guitars! [Laughs]
Yeah, but I'm glad they didn't, because that means we can! I'm really surprised that a band like Metallica never covered this song, because it sounds like a song from Garage Days. It has the same atmosphere. So I thought, "I'm gonna make it sound like a Garage Days song by Metallica. And I fucking hate the bridge of the original, when they go into white boy raggae. I like reggae, but this is the whitest reggae in the world! And it totally destroys the song. As much as I've always loved the song as a whole, I've always hated that part. So getting rid of that section and making it very heavy was also on the to-do list. I had to go into Trouble mode on this. And of course, that goes without saying, but the lyrics were also perfect. It's meant as a tribute, even though I spit on that bridge a lot. But they've done a lot of these kind of prog bridges, like "Let's do anything here", and they'll throw in a rumba or something like that. Some people might find that really interesting, but in most of their songs, I don't think it adds anything. But yes, Genesis has a lot of... I like a lot of their older prog music, with Peter Gabriel, although I think they almost became even better after they split up. Peter Gabriel did his own music, and he did it very well - very epic music. And Phil [Collins] came in on vocals and they did their own thing. To me, it was the best of both worlds, even if it sounds sacrilegious to say that. I'd love to see Peter Gabriel come back and sing with them, that would be cool, but their separation brought so much to the music, between Peter Gabriel's career, Genesis' career and Phil's career. That amount of work, man!
It's one of the few cases where the split was a real success for everyone, and the result is as good as the original band.
Absolutely, I think so. The most amazing thing they could do now, especially now that Phil is not in good shape... What I wish they had done, or could have done, or would do one day, is a triple tour. For example, Phil and [Peter] could do a solo show each to start with, maybe just five or ten songs, and then get together with Genesis. That way we could have 'Here Come The Flood', 'Another Day In Paradise' and 'In The Air Tonight', and then a bunch of Genesis. I think everyone would love to see that. It would be the perfect concert. For me, it would be one of the best experiences possible.
You see, that's the kind of idea that made Ghost into Ghost. If you can come up with a plan like that for other bands...
[Laughs] You can always call me before it's too late, guys!
Another band that has come up with sophisticated yet super catchy music is Def Leppard, especially on their multi-platinum album Hysteria. Speaking of which, this year you released a new version of "Spillways" with Joe Elliott on vocals. When you hear him on this track, the link is obvious, especially with the very elaborate backing vocals. Would you draw a parallel between your approach to songwriting and arranging and that of Def Leppard?
On this album, yes, because I tried to emulate elements of... It's something that's been done throughout their career, but especially on their two biggest albums, Pyromania and Hysteria, the length of the songs is remarkable. It's very common these days, especially in pop, to be very fussy about the three-minute limit. In the pop world, there's this need to always get to the chorus very quickly. You have to start with the chorus, go straight to the point all the time. In the 80s, there was more courage in songwriting - a more adventurous side. Songs like 'The Riddle', for example, were very strange, very proggy. There were weird chord progressions and stuff that nobody does anymore. The pop world has been so chicken for so long. Of course, I've always had an ear for pop; I'm not exactly impressed with what I hear today, but in my life I've always listened to the radio and liked a lot of what I heard, especially the 80s super hits. That's totally my thing. And I love Eurodisco from the early 90s. There are a lot of great composers in that scene. Max Martin started in Eurodisco, at least professionally, but before that he was in metal. What makes him such a great composer is his metal ear. He was writing Eurodisco songs, and then all of a sudden he started writing huge pop songs for the Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears. This whole school of Swedish songwriters is made up of former metalheads, former rockers, former guitarists.
So I wanted to challenge myself in my own songwriting, because sometimes I keep it too short. Even though "Square Hammer" is a good example of a well-written song, it was almost frustrating, because I thought, "OK, that's one more song like that. Now I have to stop doing that, because it was almost too simple." It was a very intuitive song; I literally wrote it in ten minutes. I had the melody, I played it, and the song wrote itself very quickly. There's almost no finesse in that song, and I thought I should avoid doing the same thing again, because it would be too easy. I wanted to see if I could write in a Def Leppard way. On Hysteria, there are six, seven, eight singles, a good half of which were huge hits. In 1987 or 1988, they were on a par with Coldplay at the height of their career, that's for sure. How could they write five-minute songs, with like five distinct parts? It wasn't conventional, verse-chorus-verse-chorus writing. It was verse, another verse, pre-chorus, bridge, and then finally, after two minutes, you'd get to the chorus. And it was so rewarding, because it was such a long way to get there. I thought, "This is what I have to work towards. I want to dare to add another part, dare not to follow the path. That was a mental exercise I did on Impera, and I'll try to do better in the future. It's an interesting way to challenge yourself.
When people talk about the length of songs on the radio, I always think of the story of "Bohemian Rhapsody": "This is going to be a disaster, it's never going to be played on the radio!" That's it, yes...
For a long time they called that song "Freddie's thing". It's such an anomaly in the middle of what we've just been talking about. Of course, I don't recommend... For a young band that's just got a contract, it's best to avoid the six-minute "Rhapsody". But if you can find a compromise between 'The Passenger' and 'Bohemian Rhapsody', I think you've got something.
On that subject, how did Joe Elliott end up on "Spillways"?
The story is very simple. I talked about Def Leppard a lot before Impera came out because of the mental exercise I mentioned, and both Phil and Joe had been talking about Ghost for a few years. It got to the point where our respective managements wanted us to do something together. In the modern world, that often means collaborating, as hip-hop artists do. I explained that I was willing to explore the idea, but that for me, a collaboration is a trendy but outdated concept. We do it all the time. In hip-hop, it's almost ridiculous to see... If an artist is hot this week and you go look at the American top 40, it's just "this artist feat. this other artist". I totally understand that one plus one can sometimes be three, but it gets very cynical. I don't want to do things cynically. I sing cynical things, I'm a cynical person, but I don't want to be cynical about my fans or my career. So I said yes, I would discuss it with Joe, but we'd have to see if we could agree on something, if there was romance in the air.
Joe and I sent a lot of messages to each other to try and arrange a meeting. He lives in Ireland, but also in LA. I live in Sweden, but I also spend a lot of time in LA, so we tried to find time to see each other. He was getting ready for his tour, I was getting ready for my tour, and we were just hanging out. And then out of the blue, he wanted to experiment; he went into the studio, recorded some vocal lines and sent them to me. I thought it sounded really cool and I said, "Look, I have nothing but good things to say about what you did. It sounds great. I'm not surprised by your voice, but by the fact that we sound so good together. I like that very drawling vocal, you really added something. But I have no desire to throw this on Spotify and say to people, 'Here's another thing you can buy.'" I asked him, "You know we do little skits to communicate with our fans in a funny way? Instead of posting on Instagram saying we'll be in such and such a city, we come up with little episodes." He had seen a few and said, "Yeah, that's funny. Let's do something funny with that." The gag is the important part, and the end result is a bonus.
It's like what we did with 'Kiss The Go-Goat' and 'Mary On A Cross'. The idea for the episode came first, and then we said, "OK, but we need a song. So I came up with the idea for this 60s-style sketch that was "Kiss The Go-Goat". Then, as I was writing and recording 'Kiss The Go-Goat', 'Mary On A Cross' came up in the process, and I thought, "Great, now we have a B-side! It'll be a physical single." So I put that in the script: "Let's start showing the single, now that it's official." Things work in tandem. Looking back, we now know that the end result was different. It was meant as a joke. There was 'Kiss The Go-Goat', which was the joke itself and was very successful. And then it turned out that "Mary On A Cross" was completely different. That's also what I told Joe: we do this to mess around with the band. My job is to write records and entertain people, but apparently I also have to communicate with my fans, and do all this promotion that I'm not really interested in. I have no problem doing this interview, but I don't want a fucking Instagram account where I post pictures of myself. I don't want to be that person. So, I'm doing this so that people... They're diversions, and sometimes those diversions become cool. "What do you say, Joe?" In the end, we found this way to spend time together and do something fun. Instead of turning our creativity into songs, we turned our creativity into episodes. It became something fruitful and fun, and I think it was a great success.
The title of the EP is clever, as it mixes the terms 'ghost' and 'pantomime'. The latter term is defined as "a type of musical for the entertainment of the whole family". Is this your goal with Ghost? Do you see the band as "a musical for the whole family's entertainment"?
Broadly speaking, yes. Of course, that suggests that the more adult elements and innuendos in our show are suitable for children, which I don't claim. But I would also like to stress that I have never asked people to bring children to our shows. So if the children in question are exposed to jokes involving penises, farts and copulation, that's their problem. I grew up in a very liberal family, where there were very few barriers and no censorship. I think it's possible to have a conversation, if others are open to it. I have no problem with whole families coming to us, as long as no one suffers. So, for me, it is indeed entertainment for the whole family. But I wouldn't sell it as such to most people, because there are still elements that are not suitable for all children.
I remember a Rammstein concert where I noticed children in the audience. I thought it wasn't really a good idea... Ghost seemed a bit more appropriate, but for young children, some things can still be a bit biased.
It's hard for me to have a clear line on this, because I'm not just speaking as a musician, but also as a parent. There's a constant debate about the right age to talk about certain things. Now, with two teenagers, things are more open. But that's one of the weird things about being a semi-public figure, talking openly and publicly about your life and what you do and sharing your opinions. My kids read that, too. They are aware of it. As soon as I say something, especially nowadays, where everything becomes a meme or a clip... People may think what I say is funny, which I don't mind, but my son and daughter, now fourteen, heard it when they were eight or ten. It's hard for me to be a parent and say, 'Go to school! Don't do that", when they know perfectly well that I didn't follow any of these precepts. I'm not trying to lie to them at all. I tell them: "I did this, I don't recommend it. I did this; I totally neglected this other thing. But I was lucky and I got there. My career isn't over, so I don't know if I've really "arrived", but for now, I'm here. It was a bit silly of me to be so confident, to think I could burn all the bridges, burn all the ships and throw the oars. I was lucky enough to make it to land, but I don't recommend this technique. Don't do the same thing! [Laughs]

A while ago I got my mom to read renegades and since then she's been my person I get to converse about renegades with since my sister still has yet to get her ADHD to behave and read it
And in one such conversing moments where I went insane Abt Maggie for a good half hour I put together another thing that makes Magpie just so fucking intriguing
Alongside how much mystery her character has, which I've talked Abt before, literally the moments we see her character always feels like they are leading to something
She is building. What we see of her are the stepping stones for future focus
We get the building hints towards who she actually is during the series (which I'm slowly compiling for a future post) which culminate to THE BULLET and the EPILOGUE
(Forgive me if I go on a tangent here but) Nova is the perspective we see most showcasing Maggie and it isn't favorable AT ALL most of the time, but the little bit of build up we get is still intriguing. We find out more and more about MAGGIE through Nova, building up her background slowly and the last time Nova and Maggie interact Nova is the kindest she's ever been to Maggie.
Something stops her from leaving Magpie after Callum dies. Which I interpret as: NOVA sees her younger self in Maggie in the moment she sees her crying. Nova's seen herself in Maggie before this, in a negative way. She renegade that shouldn't be there, that doesn't fit the morals, should be punished, they act similarly stubborn, have their secrets that aren't anyone's business, etc.
But STILL there is that building that doesn't get as much of a conclusion as it could
Adrian's scenes with Maggie clue into how much POTENTIAL she has, how she COULD be a villain she's TROUBLE, that are working on it and he hopes to see her change but there's a risk
The Epilogue in it's own right is a conclusion in many ways as much as it is HEAVILY building up for more in the future. Leroy's inclusion hinting at him and Maggie interacting in the future for instance.
It's part of why the ending is so good damn INFURIATING. We get confirmation that Maggie = Evie, backed up by the clues that have followed it and by the stories matching beat for beat, AND YETTTT it's still not explicit. We are still left hanging by the fact neither party KNOWS. We can't know FOR SURE until it's stated explicitly instead of cluing us in.
(How do I know this isn't just a red herring and MM is playing us all for FOOLS?! Well it's the more interesting option AND MM has posted a vid showing her sketchbook for planning books and on one of the pages outlines a different epilogue where the clues were more explicit/Maggie's tie to the Artino family was another bracelet only David could create if my memory serves me right)
Much of what makes Maggie a character building up to things are the INSANE amount of similarities she has to both Nova and Ace Anarchy (I will make a post for everyone one day) and it leads us to be unsure about where she is going.
Is she going to end up on the path Nova took at the beginning of the renegades trilogy? Where she ultimately changes her ways to strive for more peace now alongside friends she's never had before?
Or will she go down a path like Ace Anarchy's? She's already changed her name, she's already been tossed away by the world, she has the backstory and same power for it. She has the interest in the helmet, the glint in her eyes, she's described as much to be trouble, that she could be a decent villain and it's "best not to give her ideas in case she hasn't thought of it herself"
Leroy's implied future connection to Maggie doesn't narrow it down between which option since he could act for both. He was one of the first to follow Ace, yet also an important figure in Nova's life. WHICH WAY WILL MAGGIE GO or will it be a THIRD OPTION we can't predict?
All we know is she's being set up for SOMETHING
Now for another separate point, Maggie is a young character when we first meet her-
.
okay. Ig technically she was a baby when we first meet her but
AS MAGGIE she's introduced as 10 years old, most likely soon to be 11. In Cinder's Adventure, while the book isn't necessarily canon, it's interesting how it's a four year time skip. She's described as looking to be 14-15 years old. Not quite the age Marissa Meyer writes her female protagonists BUT IS THE STEPPING STONE TO IT: 16-18 years old.
Cinder's Adventure is CHALKED FULL of hints to what the future of the Renegades universe might entail and Maggie is FAR from absent from that. We get more of her character, interesting choice to give focus to MAGGIE of all characters wouldn't ya think. We get to know where she spends most of her days, her schemes, reinforcing her connection and ATTACHMENT to CALLUM. Again, out of all the things to show, MM shows us what could only be set up. Callum's murder was indirectly Maggie's fault, even though she thought giving him the helmet could help, she'd have been a hero. By the epilogue she implies she sees herself as far from that now. Someone destined to be a villain.
MM also builds on how we'll likely see a relationship of some sort between Max and Maggie. From the epilogue we get Maggie noticing Max and having interest and now we've built to what their dynamic might be like once they've actually MET. Since the events aren't canon, I'm left to guess this is to set up and tease what is to come
And also we literally get a line from her where she says she's waiting to tell her story.
Her character is literally build up, the Renegades Trilogy IS her backstory.
Okay Kind of ish... Some important parts at least since there's no way Callum's murder didn't do psychic damage to that 11 year old
