genuinely I think one of my favorite Ai Di moments is (all of them) when he drunkenly shows up at Zongyi's house (whom he does not actually know) breaks in by removing the fucking doorknob says hi to Zongyi on his way past and then flops into ZeRui's lap and refuses to get up like not only was it fucking hilarious but I really feel it encapsulates his personality quite well

I love this boy because the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and hoping for different results and we knew he was more than a little crazy but this is the heartbreaking kind and not the running people over with a truck kind.

Eddie is just desperate to tell their story to anyone who will listen because Chen Yi certainly isn't listening and it breaks my heart more than a little. He's so desperate and so attached and all he gets in return is... well, being ditched.

And Eddie clung to an agreement that Chen Yi long ago forgot and no longer honors but Eddie won't share their birthday with everyone else, he'll just buy a cake and hope that this is the year he's remembered, that this is the year he gets to go back to celebrating with the man he loves.

Oh. the heartrending expression of someone who knows he loves more than he is loved but also knows he can't give up that love because it's really, truly, all he has.

Between those eyes and Chen Yi's line flashing on him I am deceased of this boy.

It's the way he doesn't question anything or even take a second to wish Eddie a happy birthday. Just accept his excuse and leaves without a backwards glance. Oh, Eddie, you are real hung up on this boy who barely notices you now.

One of the worst feelings is knowing that you love someone more than they love you and still trying to cling to hope despite knowing it's utterly hopeless because you just love them so much that letting go seems far more painful to hanging on and so you keep hurting yourself again and again and you have no one to blame but yourself but that doesn't make it easier.

And of course he destroys is without even a taste or a second glance. The cake was meant for both of them, not just him, and without the other half it's pointless.

At least he has a friend who understands.

I think Shen Yi and Chen Qing Xu are my favourite characters for different reasons and usually my arospec-ness prevents me from falling into a ship headfirst but I'm leaning into ShenChen in the sense of a hypothetical thought experiment of putting blorbos in situations. Like playing dolls and being like what if they kissed.

So like in the show he basically asks her to marry him and she says yes, and they're both like "Promise? Promise!" but she keeps fucking conveniently remembering and forgetting "the promise to mother" like I know he's intoxicating af and it's hard to hold a thought around this man (I also have a very hard time holding a thought looking at him), but pick a goddamn side and have a backbone about it ffs!! Like you can't waffle on people like this girl!! You literally sat here and engaged yourself to this man and then you go off and do THAT???

I would like to note that so far in the (very drastically different) novel, there is no such promise ever made, and she fucks off to the steppe because she's mad at Ning Yi thinking the whole entire time he had just been cozying up as part of a plot to kill her so leaving bought her time, space, and a power base to fight back and he just eats the misunderstanding like "????? fine, come and kill me when you're ready, at least I'll get to see you again, I am ok with this." which makes a bit more sense tbh.

In a loooot a lot of ways, the tv show is about 1000x more polished than the book, but at least the book has fewer slaps in the face like this. They become a bit more obvious on rewatch, especially after pawing through the novel. (I hope the translator finishes it someday!! They picked it up again this past may after two years of nothing so here's hoping!)

And finally, video feed of Eddie doing things throughout the day with the note reading, "the only one looking at you is me." It lets Eddie know that Chen Yi is monitoring his every move and is a nice little callback to their first time

Gotta be romantic, but in a completely unhinged and unhealthy way, just how Eddie likes it.

But then again, Chen Yi knows what Eddie likes.

Because he likes that shit too.
