Bingyuan and Changgu parallels are endless but the really interesting one to me is that SQQ knew what was going to happen to Binghe. That Binghe would turn into a violent madman who ends up spelling doom for him. But in Changgu's case, it's Chang Geng who knows about the curse while Gu Yun mostly believes that Chang Geng is gonna turn out to be the benevolent, compassionate man the Emperor was.
Luo Binghe didn't know the dark future that awaited him but SQQ did. Chang Geng has a premonition while Gu Yun has no idea

Caved to temptation and got it and unfortunately volume 2 was really good. I spent the whole day reading it.
Priest would be a lot easier to handle as a writer if she weren't really fucking good.
Horribly tempted to get/read another volume of a series that made me really mad when I read volume 1 :[
So much about it was so frustratingly bad and/or repulsive but also the plot and main relationship were legitimately fascinating and I really want to know what happens next. It's been over six months and I'm still thinking about it.
#don't have to worry about this post showing up in a fan tag now that I'm writing in a reblog. so I can just say#I'm talking about sha po lang#the way it deals with other cultures/countries continues to be really gross#(I mean the treatment of white people is hilarious. evil pope 10/10. I'm talking about the racism toward northern and central asian people)#but the grossness is. a lot more minor/sidelined compare to the horror show that was early volume 1#and god the plot in volume 2. unfortunately really good#I'm fucking riveted#I've come around and I actually really like Gu Yun now#I don't know if I'm actually cheering for changgu as a romance yet. but I'm certainly cheering for them to work out their whole thing#in some form or another#oh also now that I think of it I'm also mad about what they did with cao chunhua#I'm almost glad she got sidelined bc when she was onscreen I was just mad about how hard priest fumbled her fascinating setup#putting my old liveblog tag on this rb as well just for completion's sake#andie reads spl#invasion of the frogs

I'm on the chapter where they captured the leader of the bandit group Chang Geng had his first memories with and Gu Yun is close to finding out everything and it's viscerally driving in the point of how helpless Gu Yun feels that he could not do anything for Chang Geng back then because he was also a child.
When Chang Geng was a baby, Gu Yun was about 7 and couldn't possibly have done anything to save him. When they found Chang Geng at 12 yo, Gu Yun would've been roughly 19 and it's illogical to expect a socially awkward ptsd ridden 19 yo to immediately grasp that Chang Geng may have been running away from an abusive parent, especially when both Xiu Niang and Chang Geng were hellbent on hiding it so well. Of course Gu Yun has regrets. Whether you are old or young, naive or perceptive, you are still you and the people you love are still the people you wanna save and you couldn't do it. You couldn't be there and when you were there, you didn't get what was happening.
And at this point it comes full circle when you realize that Chang Geng feels EXACTLY the same. Him wishing he was born 10 years before his time, him trying to grow up faster and become capable soon so that he could be of use to Gu Yun, all of those are Chang Geng's fight against time and his own youth. Gu Yun wished he wasn't a child when Chang Geng needed rescuing just like Chang Geng wishes he wasn't a child when Gu Yun needs/needed support
#sha po lang#liveblogging#sha po lang liveblogging#ive also never really seen them as 'father' and 'son' exactly because of this#gu yun doesnt have a bone of fatherhood in him and that is obvious to me as a 29 yo myself#gu yun at this point is younger than me!#you may want to protect a younger person or feel like you're their mentor even#but that doesnt change the fact that your own time and experiences limit you from playing a more protective role#its like when wkx adopted gu xiang the most he could be was a big brother#and they naturally fell into that dynamic#the age gap and growth of both CG and GY naturally limit what they can do to each other and what they can be to each other

Chang Geng in ch 96 before Gu Yun arrives: King of Beasts, the injuries just make him more feral, his gauze is bleeding yet he calls it a minor injury of skin and flesh
Chang Geng after Gu Yun enters: poor little meow meow, a silly klutzy lil kitten, just a lil babie with a boo boo
#sha po lang#liveblogging#sha po lang liveblogging#he falls apart in front of gu yun is an understatement#he melts he breaks he stops functioning

Scared to death by his 'yifu' drowning, only to find out he nearly drowned and burned to death for no reason, then getting yelled at by the person he was trying to protect, and then finding out his mom is not his real mom. Chang Geng is having one hell of a day
