Getting myself jazzed up to start on storyboards for episode ten by looking at storyboard animatics by other people, and it's amazing how much it can vary between studios.
Every time, I'm amazed by just how...barebones the storyboards for the ambitiously animated 80's-90's Disney films were. Not only in terms of how loosely the actions were telegraphed, but also in the stylization. Check out this side by side of "Under the Sea." That doesn't even look like Ariel! Not that this is a bad thing--you can tell this setup was in place to really let their famous animators get creative.
youtube
Compare that to these boards on My Neighbor Totoro. Miyazaki is also a manga artist, and it shows, here! Compare this to his manga, and there isn't much of a difference. Every panel is fantastically detailed, though not painstakingly so. This feels less like a storyboard, and more like a very thorough comic panel sequence.
youtube
Looking at a very different kind of animation, Spongebob is a board-first show. There is no script stage! Going board-first helps keep the pacing of the visual gags tight. Compared to Disney's wishy-washy board timing, the tempo set for the animation is very consistent and obvious.
youtube
...And then we have Don Bluth. Just. LOOK at the boards on this deleted sequence from The Land Before Time. The timing, and the level of artistic detail...it's beyond insane. It's interspersed with surviving screenshots, really showing off just how ridiculously detailed these boards were! Even the backgrounds are laid out, complete with grids, to give the animators and backgrounds an idea of the space they were working in! Absolutely incredible.
youtube
Each of these methods caters to the animators in a different way, and it's really interesting to think about how!
Next to them, my method is...uh...well.
youtube
In my defense, I'd previously been boarding only for myself, since I've been the only animator and using royalty-free music. Now that I've got a composer, and I'll be probably be getting some animation help on this episode, I need to work extra hard to keep things kiiind of clear. Oh boy. Wish me luck! I need to stop procrastinating....

@revretch I just binge-watched all available content for @humansbgone and adored every second of it! The voice-acting is great, the educational elements are a fantastic addition, and I’ve been thoroughly absorbed into the story and worldbuilding. You’re knocking this out of the park!
The appearance of the Cows was a great twist, and I’m wondering what both the Humans and the Ants are plotting…
And regarding the Gregorsa’s Notes minigame, I achieved a perfect score so far!
Keep up the good work, you might as well catch me and drop me into Sophodra’s collection because I’m hooked!
And I couldn’t help but notice the fragmented pieces of text at the end of each episode…I wonder if they’re eventually all going to fit together…hm…

The Ants and Hubris
So from the questions on the DIscord I conclude the ants would not survive a Godzilla movie or similar genre about hubris.
"We will all die before accept something not bowing before us."
Though Specifically most versions of Godzilla would not be exterminating the ants but trying to get down the bladder's stalk to the planet which is a delicious radioactive wasteland
But that means getting through the Ant Queen's quarters most likely.

I'll have to account for [ ] but she's back already. Next time

@bowelflies Sorry this is so late, but I drew you my weevil in a wizard robe! At some point I had to accept that I don't know how to draw a weevil in a wizard robe. Happy (extremely belated) Birthday!

Excuse you. There are many "pest" roaches, and not a single one is a bad animal, because there aren't any bad animals. But the American roach is my favorite, so I'll focus on it.
American roaches (Periplaneta americana) are the dainty deer of roaches. Everything they do, delicate and precise. Wide, doey eyes; agile movements.
Two lovely spots decorate the pronotum (back shield). The black wings light up a vivid red from below.
They're social animals, too. Without the company of other roaches, they get very lonely, and may not even develop correctly.
They are highly intelligent for insects, and can be trained--using smell to give commands, however, instead of sound.
They (American roaches, that is) are actually only pests in warmer areas, and usually only for businesses, which have big, wet basements to inhabit. Normally, however, they live outside.
It's good that some roaches are pests, though! Humans have created broad swathes of land that are completely uninhabitable to most animals. Thanks to help of "pests" like these roaches (big, fatty, protein-heavy cornerstones of the food chain!), even those areas can sustain some wildlife. Yes, cute little songbirds love a good roach!
And of course, I have an American roach character myself.
Every Roach
Collage I made of roach diversity. There are so many varieties, the pests give this group a bad name.

First Ukraine, then Palestine, and now @bogleech recently reblogged a post saying that Argentina’s in danger, too. 🤦🏻♀️
I’m just… so done with all this killing and fascism and genocide and whatever other words that would describe it.
And since I’ve been getting back into Humans-B-Gone again, I’m very, very tempted to project my frustrations onto the yellow crazy ants, who are themselves genocidal dictators. The difference is that they don’t need guns or bombs to be dangerous, because they’re a specific kind of ant that can shoot acid, which would mean that they can’t be disarmed in a conventional sense.
It was when I first asked about why the ants think they’re better than the other macrovolutes that Rev revealed, without directly using the word “genocide”, that the yellow crazy ants committed genocide against multiple other species of macrovolutes prior to the beginning of the story. It would seem that their rule over macrovolute society has gone unchallenged ever since.
And really, is the IDF any different? Is the Kremlin any different? Aren’t HBG’s ants pretty much living the dream of those two organizations? And, like with the IDF and the Kremlin, the betterment of macrovolute society depends on the ants being removed from power. But the question is how? They’ve got strength in numbers and built-in projectile weaponry. Fighting them would be a suicide mission!
Likewise, the solution to the threats posed by the real-life fascists seems similarly unreachable. But they’re not invincible, right? Right?!

Anyways, back to shitposting about our WIPs.
Today, on Horrors Rose Has Encountered:
-Stuck somewhere she doesn't recognize
-The Fucking Humidity (water droplets are forming on her hairs and she doesnt like it)
-There's Fucking Things In The Water
-Threatened by things that smell kind of like ants but are DEFINITELY NOT BUGS even if they're trying to sound like them
-Chased by things that smell kind of like ants but are NOT ANTS and are FASTER THAN HER and one of them is A LOT bigger than her
-Fell off a cliff
-Rocks on her... her.
-Has never actually encountered this much rock before and she would prefer literally any other introduction to rocks
-Broken leg(s)
-One of the things that's definitely not a bug mimicked her fucking scent and keeps using it to talk to her and she doesn't like it one fucking bit but she can't actually do anything about it because she's stuck under rocks with broken legs
-Bee in her face (and they're really fucking small for some reason??? she thought bumblebees were bigger but apparently not)
-Being talked to like she's an actual small child and will not comprehend complex pheromone messages (lesser horror and probably fair bc its actually really hard to think rn bc the fall did Some Damage and thinking through The Pain is... spectacularly difficult rn and she Does Not want to deal with the headache of deciphering standard insect talk rn but it does still feel a bit condescending)

Also going to finally make a pinned post for all my stuff:
BOGLEECH - my tumblr blog is named after this website I created around 2002 and still update. Thousands of pages worth of content focusing on creature design as well as real biology. My review of the original Legend of Zelda monsters might be the most straightforward example of my articles. Links to some of the most popular content:
POKEMON REVIEW ARCHIVE: - I rate and review each and every single Pokemon, in Pokedex order, on its merits as a creature design. I also do so as someone whose favorite animals are all parasites.
DIGIMON REVIEW ARCHIVE - same, but more chaotic.
CREEPYPASTA COOKOFF ARCHIVE - for several years I hosted a yearly writing contest before it grew too big for me to keep up with. There are over a thousand user submitted horror, fantasy, sci fi and surrealist stories here emphasizing unconventional, original ideas you seldom see from the "creepypasta" community!
The original "MORTASHEEN" Monster Archive - since the early 2000's I've created and illustrated more than 800 creatures and counting for my own monster-catching world, now set for release as a tabletop RPG setting.
AWFUL HOSPITAL: SERIOUSLY THE WORST EVER (page one): an interactive comedy-horror-sci-fi webcomic I started in 2014 about a medical facility that could maybe be better.
Some of my other internet stuff:
PATREON - constant work makes my patreon updates inconsistent, but the content backlog goes back years with a huge amount of exclusive art and writing. I try to put up new exclusive stuff whenever I can.
ETSY - I design all sorts of original enamel pins like these, plus I sell zero-maintenance terrarium plants (just leave them in a jar!), original books and other things!
COLOR THE ABYSS (available on the above etsy!) - a 30 page educational deep sea coloring book! Includes a few famous favorites like giant isopods and hagfish, but mostly focuses on less popular, often much weirder animals.
UNBELIEVABLE BUGS - also regularly restocked in the etsy store, 30 of the strangest and most surprising arthropods most people have likely never heard of, illustrated by myself and @revretch, written for even the youngest kids to understand (but will likely teach you something new at any age)
My Itch.io and Ko-fi - both sell digital versions of my books, including some creepypasta collections and my first novel, "Return of the Living," about a world of entirely ghosts suddenly dealing with the appearance of ghost-hunting monsters.
TWITCH CHANNEL - I now try to stream something at least monthly, sometimes weekly when possible, from horror games to books and art.
YOUTUBE CHANNEL - archives my twitch streams and other little things.
INSTAGRAM - look at pictures of my huge weird collection of toys and Halloween collectibles
BLUESKY - I'm going to put mainly just updates to my stuff on here. SEE ALSO:
HUMANS-B-GONE - a science fiction animated series by my partner @revretch, about a world of kaiju-size, technologically advanced insects and arachnids to whom vertebrates like us are just pesky little "gubs." Also has a tumblr account @humansbgone FINALLY, HERE'S MY GUIDE AND RESOURCE TO MAKING YOUR OWN INTERNET WEBSITE IN A FEW MINUTES WITH NO KNOWLEDGE OF CODING
