the thing frequently cited as eddie’s Mistake in s5 is “quitting his job without talking to chris” which i really struggle to understand because on one level i don’t think a parent is obligated to talk to their 10 year old child about a career decision and i also don’t think a 10 year old child can be expected to provide reasonable insight on the best approach to their own trauma. and on another level i think this implies that if eddie had talked to chris then he would have Known he didn’t Have to quit his job and could have never been miserable at dispatch … but like. eddie was not fit for active duty. he was right to quit his job! there was a reason bobby didn’t let him come back. his Mistake was using christopher’s supposed needs as his motivation and as an easy excuse to continue repressing his trauma and burgeoning anxieties and to continue marching forward without closely examining what he was trying to get away from. there is a world in which eddie quitting firefighting and being miserable at dispatch for the rest of his days COULD have been the answer and a genuine sacrifice he chose to make as a parent, but that’s not what he was doing—he was convincing himself he was making a genuine sacrifice when what he was actually doing was trying to keep a lid on all the boxes holding his issues.

i also struggle with the idea that the mistake eddie is making Now is “moving to el paso without talking to chris” for similar reasons. like, i don’t think a 14 year old is equipped to make decisions like that, even if they’re for his own sake, or for dealing with his own trauma. there is a world in which eddie packs up and moves to el paso because genuinely, it is better for chris, it’s where chris is thriving, and he’d be well within his right to do so even if it theoretically blocks chris from returning to life in LA—it’s not a mistake for eddie to make the unequivocal decision about where they live lol. the actual problem is that he’s once again using chris thriving in a different environment as an excuse to repress the fact that the reason he’s taking this drastic decision he doesn’t want to take is because he doesn’t trust himself. probably chris IS having a good time in texas. but eddie doesn’t want to think about the wounds that lead him to believe he can’t give chris what he needs, or that lead him to actually hurt chris, so instead he is making another ingenuine sacrifice to avoid feeling things he thinks he doesn’t deserve to feel, or shouldn’t be feeling. of course we know that LA is his home and staying in el paso isn’t going to end up being the right decision, but it’s not the wrong decision because they shouldn’t move away ever or should never be sad ever and eddie should know that, it’s the wrong decision because he’s not being honest with himself about why he’s making it… which was also the case in s5.

Sunday Sentences 🧜‍♂️

tagged recently by a few folks, but just have not had anything to share (thankssomuch, Work) Offering some mer!Buck today. It's-been-84-years-dot-gif b/c one section was giving me a hell of a lotta trouble. It still is so I moved on for now. Here's Eddie contemplating a pre-Basic trip to the coast. For no reason, of course, why do you ask?

Not to mention he should be spending what’s left of his freedom with Shannon, his wife and future mother of their child.  He should want to do that anyway, and he does. They’ve spent every second they can together – looking at apartment options, ogling clothes and other baby needs that are insanely out of their price range, choosing potential names. Weirdly, it’s been like a dream come true, even if the timing is anything but perfect. But there’s been a shadow clouding it all, too. The dose of reality when they told their parents. The sharp truth that their minimum wage jobs weren’t going to cut it. The continuous hurt and disappointment emanating from Shannon when he thought he was doing the right thing by signing up for the military.  Of course it’s not ideal, but it’s a means to provide, to take care of her and their future. A little time to toughen up in a space away from his parents while doing something that matters. He wants to become the sort of person his family needs him to be.  In the best case scenario he stays local, does his time, and they’re good to go. A shining spot on his resume that helps them along, no harm, no foul. And in the worst case scenario- well, Shannon and his mother remind him enough about that far too often. He knows what could happen. Maybe that’s why today he has to take the time and space he needs. To be a little selfish and rash.  Eddie rakes his fingers through his hair as a distraction, because it’s not just the friction with Shannon that has him restless. There’s something else, a sensation he can’t seem to ignore, no matter how hard he tries. A persistent pull on an invisible thread wound through his ribs, tugging sharply at him. Beckoning him. He could pretend he doesn’t know where it’s coming from, or where it leads, but that would be a lie, too.  He'd be stupid to pretend the relationship between him and Evan hadn’t shifted last time, something dually palpable and nebulous. Too vague to specifically identify, but maybe that was more because they were too cowardly to say it out loud. Even if they had, Eddie had Shannon. He has Shannon. And, soon, their baby. Not like that was a factor at the time.

Look who finally moved past chapter 1! A lil snip of Eddie and Shannon’s HS graduation (I’m having a ball writing them young and lovey 🥹)

“And, with that, let’s give a final send off and congratulations to our graduating class!”

In a flurry of cheers, shouts, applause, and caps flying into the air, Eddie is finally done with high school. He can hardly believe it. Done with the insanity of standardized tests and filling in the little circles until he goes cross eyed. No more losing sleep because he was studying late into the night. Or, more accurately, making out with Shannon when they should have been studying.

However it happened, they made it to the end. Shannon will start at the community college in the fall, while he takes a gap year to save a little more money. He’s glad that she’s moving ahead and not waiting for him. Some of their classmates are doing that for people they’ll probably be broken up with by their second year. It’s kind of a dark outlook, but he’s not holding his breath on Taylor and Jonah having a lifelong romance.

“Hey, you.” Shannon snakes an arm around his back, smiling up at him in that way that makes her nose scrunch adorably and crinkles form around her eyes.

“Hey.” He shuts out the chaos of people connecting with their family and friends, dipping his head to give her a celebratory kiss. The principal made it abundantly clear ‘that type of behavior won’t be tolerated’ but they just graduated. He’s allowed to kiss his girlfriend if he wants. “Gotta tell you, that yellow robe is really working for you. Might have to find one for you to wear all the time.”

“Yeah, I’ll get right on that, stud.” She playfully shoves his shoulder, much more tastefully adorned in black.

Eddie snorts and then they both break into a fit of laughter. “Come on, let’s go find everyone.”

So I was thinking about the whole elves-being-naturally-prettier-than-humans thing because that was always sort of weird to me when I FINALLY think I figured it out.

Humans used to know about the elves, and there are some things they still remember—hence myths about Atlantis and such. Reality is, humans and elves resembled each other in a lot of ways, but elves put themselves on a pedestal as better than every other species (that’s, like, canon, and better be addressed more fully at some point?) and that’s probably a part of the reasons humans “betrayed” the elves—they got sick of hearing that elves were better.

But it was just sort of implanted in their minds, though they weren’t fans of the idea, and elves didn’t go to great lengths to erase that idea from their minds. So humans remember myths and some things about elves, and Atlantis being the underwater city………and beauty standards.

It’s not that elves are naturally prettier than humans. It’s that human beauty standards are shaped around the natural looks of elves.

I feel like I'm the only one that thinks the Lost Cities wouldn't be homophobic

Like I absolutely understand that the matchmaking system is built upon genetics and having children and so it seems logical that elves would only like hetero couples

but 1. As humans we have technically already figured out a way for two women to reproduce with each other so there's a very good chance elves have too

2. Shannon emphasizes constantly that the Lost Cities have different prejudices from the Forbidden Cities and the reason they think of themselves as so much better than humans is because they don't have all the issues that humans do so to add homophobia would take away from that entire message

3. Because of immortality many elves never get married or even apply to the match the only thing in the Lost Cities that is seen as scandalous is marrying and having children with someone who's not on your match list

4. the fact that many elves don't have children or get married (and as far as I'm aware aren't judged for it) I don't think the having children aspect is actually as important as some people think it is

5. all these same things apply to trans people I think there's a very good chance that when an elf is trans they just tell their parents and transition literally right after they come out (which could be right after their out of the womb considering they can talk immediately) because gender has no standing on what ability an elf will manifest

Bonus, I also think the elves being pro-life because of inception dates (I've only seen this a couple times but still) is also not something that would actually happen I think the elves almost definitely have 100% affective contraceptive so they literally don't have children until they want to and they most likely count by inception date 1. because they can easily tell what day it is because of the weird belly button thing and 2. because elvin biology and/or development is clearly different from humans considering they talk from birth and so it's more accurate to count from the inception date

On that point I want to once again emphasize that elves don't have the same norms and culture that humans do they have entirely different ways of living and don't have the same discrimination or prejudices that humans do and it defeats the point to say they do

Honestly I think the main reason there aren't any queer people in kotlc is because Shannon just like hasn't thought to add them
