Vamp Baby Grogu
Because this wasn’t a monster. He was a little boy. Din kneeled down with a few feet between them. “Hey. It’s ok, I’m not going to hurt you.” He reached out, but the child weakly hissed at him. Din could see his reflection in the child’s pure black eyes. He was clearly a child, but not a human one by any means. His hair was pure white, and he had four sharp teeth, where his canines would be. His ears were even pointed. The poor kid was barefoot and in a torn ratty t-shirt. If this was any other situation, he’d scoop him up into his jacket and call an ambulance. This child was all alone out here, and he couldn’t be more than three, if that. [...]
He looked up to see Grogu crawling on the ceiling. He hoped it was Grogu, because the child looked completely different. Instead of white, his hair had changed into dark brown curls. His eyes were dark brown as well. Much like Din’s. The child looked human now, save for the ever present sharp fangs.
-Same Time Tonight by that_squishy_robot, Chapter 1
Creepy to cute 'human' Grogu from a vampireAU Din is a surprisingly good dad if not largely in part because he just rolls with it.

“Are you doing deliveries today?” Grogu asks while they wait at the intersection. Din ruffles the kid’s black hair, making him scowl and yank his hood over his head. “Not tonight. You wanted me to come with you to Miss Tano’s academy, remember?” Grogu’s eyes widen and he nods vigorously. His smile drowns out his earlier annoyance and there’s a spring in his step as he drags Din across the crosswalk. The kid’s happiness is always so bright and it carries Din through his day shift. In the evening, he takes Grogu to the new force—“It’s a Force academy, Dad. The Force is a proper noun.”— academy run by Ahsoka Tano, a newcomer to Nevarro, where he watches Grogu try a beginner’s class and ignores curious glances from other parents.
Listen. Listen.... I got no excuse. I need to fill in the time between now and NaNo and it is cold, it is sweater weather, I have 3k+ words, and I absolutely managed to lay down the groundworks for an excuse to whip out another supercharged sparring scene because I am a fucking fool of a Took.
Anyway, how human!Grogu work? I decided to roll a kid!Grogu rather than toddler!Grogu because I think the dynamic will be way more interesting and also the idea is that this hell of a tale takes place several years after all the drama happens. This is people who had settled into their everyday lives because this is a slice-of-life nondrama modernish AU written with a really light hand and I hope to hell it stays that way.
Also Peli has 3 rescue dogs. And is in this fic. As well as Ahsoka. Among other things.

Good Dad Paz pt 3
one | two
whew, this one fought me a bit at the end there. definitely doesn’t have anything to do with the fact i haven’t slept yet tho
considering adding ‘vod’ to the list of untranslatable Mando’a, it has a level of camaraderie/brothers-in-arms feel that just brother/sister doesn’t really convey well enough. maybe in the edit, if i ever edit
---
Paz didn't like seeing Din wounded.
It was unnatural, their covert's best Hunter laying so silent and still. Din was quiet, but he was also a man of action: he never seemed to stay in one place long enough to rest, for good or for ill. He was always in motion, coming and going on his bounties, talking quietly with the foundlings, helping out around the covert.
But Din had barely stirred when Paz pulled him out of the weird creature's cage, limp and insensate from whatever he'd been injected with. Paz did his best to make him comfortable, using his ratty old cloak as a pillow and placing him gently near the fire, but there wasn't much he could do other than wait.
Wait, and stand guard, as he always had.
"He'll be fine, little one," Paz rumbled, sitting with his back to the wall in view of the entrance, Din laying next to him. The foundling cooed unhappily and tucked his head against his father's neck; as soon as Paz had placed him there, Din had curled around the child, protective even in sleep.
"Patoo."
"I've seen him get through worse than this," Paz replied mildly, "And I'm guessing you have, too."
"...leh."
"That's what I thought."
Most of Paz's supplies were topside with his ship, but he did keep emergency rations on him at all times - even if the emergencies tended to just be 'a foundling is hungry'. He set aside one of the ration bars for Din; for the child, he mixed some of his canteen water and a packet of nutrient paste together in the cup from his field kit, setting it near the edge of the fire to warm.
He didn't actually know what the kid ate - or even what species he was - but going with something hard to choke on was generally a safe bet with babies.
Din started waking up by the time the broth was finished; Paz tested the temperature with an un-gloved finger before handing it to the little one. He reached over to place his hand flat on Din's chest at the sound of a muffled groan.
"Easy," he said. "You're safe."
"Wha-- Paz?"
"Your child is also safe," he added, as if said foundling wasn't slurping noisily right next to Din's head.
"Grogu..?"
Aha, finally, a name for the kid. It sounded familiar, so Din had probably said it at some point before, but Din said lots of things that Paz tended to ignore.
Din tilted his helmet toward him.
"Paz?"
Paz frowned.
"Do you have a concussion?"
"...no?"
Reassuring.
Din struggled against the hand on his chest, and Paz reluctantly helped him sit up. He dropped the canteen and a ration bar in Din's lap and shuffled around so they were back-to-back, Din propped against him in a heavy weight that Paz didn't mind bearing.
"Drink something. And eat, if you can stomach it. You need to replace whatever that thing took out of you."
Mostly blood, from what Paz could tell, but he admittedly didn't look too closely.
Din grunted in assent; Paz heard the cap of his canteen unscrew, and the soft hiss of a helmet seal disengaging. He kept his gaze straight ahead, idly scanning the room.
"Found your kid topside," he said. "He led me down here to you. Smart little thing."
"He is," Din agreed softly. His voice sounded even worse without the vocoder modulating it, rough and tired and strained: vulnerable, in a way that their armor was designed to conceal.
Paz stood guard while Din ate, a hand on the assault cannon at his side, his body blocking the view from the entryway. But the sewers stayed calm, just the crackling of the fire and the child's happy coos interrupting the companionable quiet. He waited until he heard Din pull his helmet back on, and the soft sizzle of a wrapper being disposed of in the fire.
Then he waited some more.
"Paz," Din said, eventually, "What are you doing here?"
"Saving your sorry ass, obviously."
Din snorted, uncontrolled and undignified, and thunked his helmet ungently against the back of Paz's.
"Paz."
Paz sighed, tapping his fingers one-two-three against the barrels of his cannon.
"The foulding you saved," he said. "The one who was swearing the Creed."
Din hummed in inquiry.
"He is mine."
"Oh," Din breathed. "Oh, Paz, that's wonderful. Congratulations."
Paz grinned widely beneath his helmet, ducking his head a little. The fierce pride he felt whenever he looked at Ragnar, when he remembered that he'd been gifted with a child of his own to cherish - it still surprised him, sometimes, the depth of the emotion. He'd always loved the foundlings in their covert, would have happily died to protect them - but something about having Ragnar as his son made him want to live.
"I came in second, as usual," he groused good-naturedly. "You'd already gone and found yourself a child first."
"Ah, that's...not quite correct."
Paz blinked.
"What?"
"I mean I haven't, yet," Din said. "He's not mine, not really. I haven't sworn the words to him."
Paz blinked again.
Then he twisted around to stare incredulously at his utter idiot of a brother.
"You what?"

Look. That episode Mando episode.
Man, i´m not even angry, i´m just disappointed , cause I KNOW how good this show can be. Specially this season that´s, supposedly, gonna revolve around what it means to be a Mandalorian and Mandalore's history
Din is such an interesting, compeling and complex character and he could be so much more if only THEY- JUST. LET. HIM.
They are completely misunderstanding what´s what drove people to Mando at first. Yes, it´s cute to see this bounty hunter begrudgingly take care of a jedi baby BUT the show is SO MUCH MORE THAN THAT! It was about dissecting this misterious and closed off character who´s being through so much, it was seeing how all that trauma that he has - that made him separate himself from everything and everyone - was what ultimately helped him connect with Grogu. It´s lovely to see him open up little by little knowing he shouldn't, knowing that a goodbye is imminent. It was complex, it had layers.
And Grogu. I know everyone jokes about how he was just made to sell toys and i thought so as well before starting the show a few years back. I used to really hate him and all the fuss everyone was making around him being a cute baby, but when i finally watched the show, i sat captivated and saw it was so much more. He´s more than just cute baby, he is a survivor ,just like Din, and has lived through so many things. His story is so interesting and he could be much more than a “marketable sw mascot”, but again, THEY ARE NOT ALLOWING THEM THAT!
It´s so frustrating watching this first episode and see both our main characters being reduced to “cute baby” and “dad”. They feel as they have no agency. And damn my brain for making me think this, but i felt, watching this episode, as i felt watching the last Jurassic World movie. Everyone is a diluted version of their character, everyone moves and does whatever the plot and script needs them to do without any explanation or reason to why or HOW they did it and everything just moves SO FUCKING FAST for no reason.
The first 3 episodes of the 1st season were such bangers cause they were the total opposite of this one. They were paced so well, letting viewers experience events along the characters, they made an amazing use of Show not tell (cof cof what do you mean Grogu was away from Din for around a year, Favreau cof cof), they introduced a conflict in a natural and organic way, and most importantly, they trusted the audience to understand what was happening without having a character explain it as we were a bunch of idiots or smth.
Think about that scene in the 3rd episode when Din decides to take Grogu back from the imperials. We, as an audience, understand (without seeing the guy´s face) what´s going on in his mind in that moment; the doubt, the regret, the decision, everything just through body language, well done cinematography and music. We didn´t need Din or someone else going “you felt bad so you went back for him”, no, we just understood, and the show trusted us to understand that, to come to our own conclussions and understanding of the scene and motivations of the characters. AND WE HAD JUST MET THE GUY.
The difference here from last episode is that they gave us something to work with and, watching the episodes, you understand Din´s final decision.
Now we just don´t know what the hell Din´s thinking, and not because of a mystery or to build tension, it just feels as if Din is a weird NPC that moves the story forward and is there only to show us cool action scenes, cameos and Mandalore lore, without relating to anything. He feels as if he´s just not thinking at all, not as being stupid, but just as if he literally had no mind of his own, no opinions,no feelings, no nothing. And Grogu is just..there, i guess. Being cute and that´s all.
Also, not as important as the narrative and script issues i had with the episode but, when i first watched The Mandalorian - begrudgingly, i must add, as i actually hated star wars but a friend of mine kept insisting that i gave it a try - i was amazed at how detailed the effects were, how everything felt alive and lived in. I remember rewatching again and again the scene where Din lands the Razor Crest in Arvala 7 and just admire the detail of the dust and water moving with the ship´s power, the way everything felt so real. Everything in the 1st and 2nd season ( i have my issues with the effects in season 2 as well but they´re still okay, imo) felt alive, real. And wow, what a downgrade this episode was.
For a show with a ridiculous budget it´s not showing at all. The kid helmet at the start looked like a toy (i can let it slide cause it´s literally brand new so you could argue there´s no reason for it to not look all shiny and clean), the alligator was okay, i guess, but didn´t feel nearly as real as the Krayt Dragon from S2, and the rest...to be honest, not surprised at all. I kept getting thrown off by the straight up green screen feel of the Greef vs Random Pirates scene (Also an unnecessary scene, tbh, felt like an escuse for a “cool star wars space battle ™” ). The Mandalorian castle was cool, tho, i guess.
I´m not dissing the people who worked in the show´s Visual Effects at all, btw. I know they can do amazing things, cause they have, i´m sure it was more of a direction and studio issue.
It surprised me how Mando´s episode in TBOBF felt much more interesting, well paced, compelling and true to Din´s character than this episode.
I know it might be way too early to judge the season as we only have this 1st episode but it´s not looking too good, Mando nation.
I want to be clear, I´m not saying everything sucked, either. I´m just frustrated cause this is my favourite show, it means a lot to me and i just want it to be as good as i know it can be.
#the mandalorian#mando#din djarin#grogu#star wars#baby yoda#mandalore#Just my opinion#the mandalorian s3#In case you think i don´t have anything good to say about the episode#i loved the helmet ritual at the start of the episode#i was always curious to know how that went#i love how din is softer around the edges now while still being a badass#i liked that they played Kuill´s them while Din worked on IG-11#I liked the alligator design#it made me think of those cool aquatic dinosaurs#i loved the purrgil scene so much!#sue me.#im a huge rebels fan and that scene made me scream at the tv while my friends looked at me like i was crazy#I LOVED that we got to see so many different alien species! not only humans#the weird Davy Jones pirate character looked absolutely ridiculous but i dig it#go for it#weird algae man#but yeah#i hope next episode is better#i really hope so#if not#well#we always have ao3#this is so long

One thing I’m now very curious about as far as Mando-lore goes, is it common for them to bring in non-human species as foundlings or is that specifically a Din thing?
Like it’s one thing to bring in a little dude who’s really not built for traditional Mandalorian-style combat but who nevertheless is very capable of adapting his own way (as much as I have an issue with enrolling your toddler in kid fight club), but what exactly are they going to do with the dragon chicks (idk what species they are sorry)? Since you apparently can’t take the creed if you don’t/can’t speak, will they be raised like animals? I get why they brought them in but I don’t get why they’re calling them foundlings when they’ll never be able to become apprentices
#the mandalorian#the mandalorian spoilers#din djarin#also why is grogu the first non human foundling we see if din isn’t the first to do this?#anyway.
