one of the things that continues to strike me on reread is how much the character of Darcy, and Austen through him, finds Mr. Bennet dead. And how much Elizabeth, in growing and changing and discarding her past blindness, has to move past her way of seeing her father and thus of seeing reality, because the two are connected! Darcy’s letter exposes her father’s flaws to Elizabeth in a way she’d never been able to see before. Most especially the way his laziness and neglect of his own gifts have hurt his family and that ultimately he doesn’t. care. Not enough to change. It literally says that she comes home from Hunsford and tries to laugh at her sisters’ and mother’s folly (the way she used to; the way her father has taught her to by example for her whole life) and she can’t anymore! It sticks in her throat. She is grieved by the failures that she sees in him, all the more so because she IS his favorite and she loves him! And the thing about Mr. Bennet is he never changes. The Lydia/wickham situation exposes to him sharply his own conduct and the consequences and he feels it! Because he is neither stupid nor unfeeling. But he, like everyone, has free will. And he chooses not to change when the opportunity presents itself. He even jokes about how quickly his feeling bad will pass and how soon everything will go back to normal, to his laziness and his selfishness. He is set in his ways and he serves as a contrast to Elizabeth’s personal journey because he embodies a version of a person she could have become and was in danger of becoming if her only goal at all times was to laugh at and judge people from the sidelines.

Lurking Around The Library

Klaus always enjoyed power. He felt it over his siblings, he could feel how they would fear him sometimes. He felt it over his students every day, how they'd beg him for higher grades and scurry away when they saw him in the corridors.

But Y/N didn't hide from him or get scared of him.

In the halls she would smile, her hair swishing behind her and her books held so tight to her chest that it pushed her cleavage onto display. Y/N never needed to ask for her grade to be bumped, she was an A* student every day of the week.

Some days Klaus only came to work because he knew she'd always be there. He knew she'd never skip a day.

During class, when everyone was scribbling down notes from the lecture playing on the screen Klaus would admire her. Watch how she clicked into focus and got writing at such an impressive speed. Sometimes Klaus would stare at how quickly her wrist flicked, wishing those nimble fingers would wrap around his cock day and night.

"I promise, Klaus." She murmured, her tone light as he leant down and kissed her lips.

"You know I love when you say my name." He purred, kissing her again and licking the seam of her lips to get a taste. They parted without resistance, letting him explore such familiar surroundings until she was pushing his chest back for air. Klaus pressed kissed down the length of her neck as she breathed heavily, her book falling from her hands as she slid her fingers up into his gelled hair.

"Klaus..." She whispered and he groaned into her shoulder, his teeth pulling the straps of both her dress and her bra down her arm but she giggled and pulled it back up. "Not in the library." She scolded softly and he huffed.

"We did it here last time, and you loved it." He murmured, a smirk on his lips as he kissed down to her cleavage.

"Mmh" She moaned softly as his hands pushed her breasts up and out of her dress. A few minutes passed of silent panic before a voice muttered about hearing things again and walked out, this time turning all the lights out leaving them in the dark. Klaus closed his eyes in silent thanks that they weren't caught whilst Y/N pulled her head back and giggled. Klaus's eyes rolled at her childishness but smiled nonetheless.

"We should get out of here, love. That was a little too close, hm?" He suggested and she nodded. He put her down, helping her back into her dress but her nipple was still pushed out against her clothes and it stirred him.

He offered his hand and she fit her smaller one in his grip, letting him lead her out and into his car. She slid into the back seat, smiling as he climbed on top of her and found his lips found hers with his. "That's alright Klaus, but thank you." She nodded, leaning forward and pecking his lips. "I'll see you on Monday?" She asked and he hummed.

"I could see you tomorrow?" He murmured, "Come over again?"

"You don't have papers to grade?" She questioned, eyes lighting up.

"I do, but english professors are known for giving papers back late so I can push them till Sunday." He chuckled and she smiled.

"I'll text you." She whispered and he nodded, kissing her lips gently.

Y/N's parents thought she was out with her usual party of friends, they'd never think their golden child would be lying and deceiving everyone for an older man, for her professor. They wouldn't have ever thought she would have gotten into such a position as to be in love with her teacher, spending her weekends in his home, on his couch, eating his food, laying in his bed. But she did.

A few students would roll their eyes whenever Y/N raised her hand. Mutter how it was so obvious that Professor Mikaelson had a favourite student and he would always choose her to answer no matter who else wanted to. They'd joke that she must do a lot of sucking up to him but it only took Klaus one time to overhear one of those jokes to have two students kicked out of the school entirely. He went to the head of the school and told them of the incident, outraged that students would dare question his professionalism and even joke that he'd do something that could ruin lives and careers. Being the well respected man he is, they too would never have thought he was sneaking around with Y/N Y/L/N.

That's what made it so easy. Nobody would have actually thought it was true. She was too well behaved, still a virgin so far as even her friends were concerned. Hadn't even had her first boyfriend. Meanwhile Klaus kept his work and his private life completely separate, barely discussing his family or weekend adventures with even his coworkers let alone a student.

But Y/N was, by far, his favourite. Klaus knew he'd never find someone like her again, not on a dating app, not in an art exhibit or a coffee shop or a shopping mall or in a book or in a film and most definitely not in is classroom again. She was one of a kind.

I would also like the mdzs fandom to stop inventing turmoil between Jiang Fengmian and Jiang Yanli just because Jiang Fengmian had a strained relationship with Jiang Cheng. There’s nothing to say that the father-daughter duo had issues, that Jiang Fengmian was neglectful (to either of them, tbh), or that he was indifferent to his daughter's presence. You feeling like Jiang Yanli is disappeared into the background of her family life because she, like her father, doesn't have a lot of scenes is not supported by the canon. While we don’t get a lot of interactions between them (because there is literally no plot or conflict to highlight), what we do get is Jiang Fengmian sticking up for his daughter and terminating a marriage contract that his abusive wife set up, something even Jin Guangshan was afraid to do:

[Jiang Fengmian] told Jin Guangshan, “The engagement was originally made at the insistence of Ah-Li’s mother. I never agreed with it. Given what happened today, it seems both sides aren’t very fond of each other, so it’s best not to force the issue.” Startled, Jin Guangshan hesitated a bit. Regardless of the situation, ending an engagement with a member of another Great Clan was never a good thing. “What do children understand? Let them fight. Fengmian-xiong, we need not take notice.” “Jin-xiong, though we can help them arrange a marriage, we can’t live the marriage for them. In the end, they are the ones who will spend their lives together.” This marriage business wasn’t Jin Guangshan’s idea in the first place either. We get him having no qualms with Jiang Yanli's hobbies such as cooking, even seems eager to partake in her creations—if we assume he hasn't before:

The reason why Jiang Cheng thinks his father hates him is because he takes any whiff of disapproval from his father to mean hatred, a trait he picked up from and that is nourished by his mother's own insistence that Jiang Fengmian "must" hate her son for being like her:

The founder of the YunmengJiang Sect, Jiang Chi, was born a rogue cultivator. The ways of the sect were honest and unrestrained. Madam Yu’s manners were the exact opposite. And, both Jiang Cheng’s looks and personality took after his mother. He hadn’t ever been to Jiang FengMian’s liking. Since birth, he taught him in many ways, yet he still couldn’t change, which was why Jiang FengMian had always seemed as though he didn’t favor him too much.

The founding father of the Jiang Clan of Yunmeng, Jiang Chi, came from a knight-errant background. The family was exuberant, honest, magnanimous, and carefree in its ways —all of which were in complete opposition to Madam Yu’s spirit. Jiang Cheng took after his mother in looks and personality, which had never been to Jiang Fengmian’s liking. He had tried to educate Jiang Cheng in a myriad of ways, but it had all been for naught. This was why it always appeared as though he didn’t favor his son.

Notice how it doesn't say that Jiang Cheng, himself, was never to Jiang Fengmian's liking, but that Madam Yu and her personality type that Jiang Cheng inherited was never to his liking, and it only "seemed/appeared" that Jiang Fengmian did not favor his son because he spent a lot of time trying to correct Jiang Cheng's bad habits, something Jiang Cheng resented. Notice how it also does not say that Jiang Fengmian avoided or ignored his son. In fact, we are told that he tried different ways to teach Jiang Cheng, a futile action we see him still committed to even up to the fall of Lotus Pier. Jiang Fengmian never gave up on his son. Jiang Cheng gave up on himself as Jiang Fengmian's son. None of that has to do with how the Jiang Fengmian and Jiang Yanli interacted in life nor how Jiang Yanli felt about her parents in death, still visiting their tablets regularly to clean and talk to them:

Jiang YanLi was kneeling in the ancestral hall. She cleaned her parents’ memorial tablets as she whispered. Wei WuXian poked his head inside, “Shijie? Talking to Uncle Jiang and Madam Yu again?”

To say that Jiang Fengmian is a terrible father simply because Jiang Cheng is more comfortable believing his mother’s lies than understanding that unconditional love does not mean unconditional tolerance for poor behavior does Jiang Fengmian’s character a disservice. To say that Jiang Fengmian is a terrible father to Jiang Yanli based on Madam Yu and Jiang Cheng’s own fantasies of victimhood is just an extra unnecessary lie to give credence to an idea that the story proves untrue. At worst, Jiang Fengmian was a man reserved in physical displays of affection that could have stood to hug his son more if that was what Jiang Cheng truly wanted. But if we are being truthful, Jiang Fengmian's just a regular fucking guy juggling raising kids and leading a clan with deterring his abusive wife from turning his home into a battlefield any time she deigns to show her face. Whatever issue you think Jiang Yanli and Jiang Cheng should have with their upbringing, the locus of the problem is named Yu Ziyuan, not Jiang Fengmian.

(im imagining a scene where cosmo is dancing in the supermarket and peri is like “NO DAD YOURE GONNA GET US FOUND OUT” (to outsiders it just looks like a teenager getting embarrassed by his dad))

and eventually he learns that it’s okay to be weird and awkward and silly sometimes and making mistakes is actually more human than painstakingly following social rules all the time
