I’m so over emotional right now. read that Jimmy Buffett died surrounded by his friends and family and started crying. not that he died. that everyone he loved, that loved him, was there with him in his final moments. and his dogs! his dogs were there, too! something about it is so beautiful and nice and fuck, I am bummed he died, but that he went out surrounded by his loved ones makes it seem okay. I’m glad he got that in the end. That knowing you’re loved and you’ll be remembered. I think that’s all we can really hope for in the end.

So, may I draw your attention to the The Official Languages Act 2003 (Section 9) Regulations 2008 (S.I. No. 391 of 2008).

In 2008, the Irish government passed legislation that made it mandatory for road signs in Ireland to have both Irish (Gaeilge) AND English names on them (or, in Gaeltacht areas where Gaeilge is still the first language, only in Irish). Here’s an example:

The Irish, or Gaeilge, is always above the English and italicised. This is because that while Gaeilge and English are both official languages of Ireland, Gaeilge is the ‘first’ official language

However, while it was technically only legislated in 2008, bilingual road sings in Ireland had been extremely common for decades prior to it officially being made law. In fact, the first bilingual signs date back to the early 20th century - before our independence from Britain!

In Tom Spalding’s book Layers: The Design, History and Meaning of Public Street Signage in Cork and Other Irish Cities, he found that the first recorded bilingual street sign was in Blackrock, Dublin (An Charraig Dhubh, Baile Átha Cliath). Their local council in 1901 rolled out yellow and black bilingual road sings as part of the Gaelic Revival.

The Gaeilc Revical was a period of time in Irish history that saw a huge resurgence of Gaelic art, sport, and language. Literature was written by Irish people about Irish history, current affairs, and folklore. Traditional Irish music was learned and played again. Gaelic games (Gaelic football and Hurling) spread across the country. And Gaeilge, our language, was to experience an incredible revival.

Despite Ireland’s long colonial history, Gaeilge actually remained the majority tongue until the early 19th century. However, a combination of teachers beating children for speaking it at school, the genocide of the famine wiping out mainly poorer communities more likely to speak Gaeilge, and the knowledge that speaking English unfortunately provided more opportunities than Gaeilge, the language was almost killed off. (This is shown most clearly after the 1800 Act of Union that meant Ireland was ruled directly from London, with no parliament in Dublin).

Although these maps make for grim viewing, Irish is so very far from dead. Our children learn it from the ages of 4-18 in school (though I believe it can and should be taught better, but I digress). Gaeltacht communities are still going strong particularly in the west of the country. There are more Irish-language schools (gaelscoileanna) than ever before.

And every day as we pass by road signs that display Gaeilge proudly, it is as a result of decades, centuries of people refusing to stop speaking our mother tongue despite incredible violence.

I am far from a fluent Irish speaker, despite my 14 years of learning the language in school. But what Gaeilge I have, I have proudly.

(The work isn’t over, however. I do not feel knowledgeable enough to speak on Northern Irish efforts to implement more widespread bilingual signage but anyone who wishes to share some info please do!!)

Honestly just imagine cuddling to sleep at night completely naked. Everything is quiet and you’re peppering sleepy kisses on each other’s face, neck, shoulders, and rubbing each other’s arms and back 'til you fall asleep oh god I’m SICK.

Ekko and Jinx's History: A Simple Comment

So I read something the other day talking about how fans are making Ekko and Jinx's relationship romantic and not all male and female characters HAVE to be romantically involved. I agree with this. I'll go so far as to say that this is true for any character of any gender. In my own writing (with my original characters) I rarely have romantic undertones. Mostly just friends being friends. While I get the allure of the romantic chase, of most people we deal with in life we aren't connecting to them romantically. Friends are friends.

That said, this is not the case with Ekko and Jinx. From Ekko's release in 2015 there has always been some romantic undertones with Jinx. Riot has always been a bit mysterious about what his relationship is with Jinx. Ekko even has a line in the game where he says:

The foundation had been laid long before Arcane was released in 2021.

Between 2015 and 2021 (when Arcane was released), a lot of official art and such dropped hints about SOMETHING going on between them. Much like Jinx being Vi's sister. You have to remember that this was originally a secret. It was Ghostcrawler who finally confirmed fan theories, even though he tried to walk it back later. Oops! Ha, ha!

To add to the mystery, on both of their official pages, Ekko is listed as connected to Jinx and Jinx is listed as connected to Ekko. However, at no point does Riot explain how they're connected. Their stories don't mention the other at all. So this means that some things were planned, but they weren't ready to reveal. I'm still of a mind that they were waiting to use Arcane as a vehicle to get into Jinx's history and how that intersected with Ekko and Vi. Before Arcane, we knew very little about Jinx and how she ends up the way she does.

Then, before Arcane came out we got this little nugget in Legends of Runeterra:

Remember, this is 100% from Riot themselves. Not the fans. Riot laid the seeds down and it was the fans who picked up on it and ran. I doubt anyone would have ever thought there was something between Ekko and Jinx without Riot dropping hints. By the time we got to Arcane Season 1, the train was already in motion.

Let's not even forget the insane number of Jinx references in the True Damage video they released in 2020. Generally it wasn't odd to see Ekko and there would be some sort of Jinx reference somewhere. That wasn't true for Jinx until recently.

After Arcane, Riot themselves has been dropping hints like crazy. Jinx has been putting Ekko's hourglass symbol on stuff. League Brazil did a huge Twitter AMA with Star Guardian Ekko and Jinx. Jinx goes to the Grammys with Ekko.

So...while I see people saying that the fans were to blame for Jinx and Ekko being romantically involved, it should be pointed out that this is all Riot's doing. The best part is that the fans have been largely receptive to their efforts in promoting the couple. Riot has waited a long time to be able to say what they want to say about them.

Sorry for the long post, but I thought it was important to point out that it's not the fans who set this up. It'll be interesting to see where this all goes, but based on their track record so far, it should be clear where the end game is headed.

Consider this related to the first actor!Nanami head cannons I wrote about.

You and Nanami have been denying the relationship rumors for the longest time now. Every time a reporter or a fan would ask you about your relationship status, you’d be quick to change the topic. Which is why everyone stopped being suspicious after a while. “Y/N and Nanami Kento spotted at Nobu” a headline would read, but no one would bat an eye. At this point, your fans weren’t even surprised to see Nanami at most of your shows. They just took pictures of him and chalked it up to friendly support. Tabloids labeled you two as the most confusing friends in the entertainment industry as most tv shows and music videos required you both to be act as a couple.

Little did everyone know, you and Nanami had been dating all along. You realized that not having your relationship out in the open but still hanging out as friends was much more bearable because there weren’t a lot of eyes on you. It was Nanami’s idea and you simply ran along with it because you wanted him to be comfortable. You knew it didn’t matter as long as those who were close to you both knew you were together.

However, a few months into the relationship, Nanami started having this strange feeling in his chest whenever you had to make public appearances alone. Especially when you went to a boxing match as a promotion strategy for your new song. Everyone knew that The Demon aka Sukuna Ryomen was the biggest flirt outside the ring. Nanami was worried that Sukuna would be seen hitting on you and the press would run wild with that story.

Unfortunately, Sukuna did hit on you. But on the bright side, no one saw it happen! After you returned home from the event, Nanami sat you down and finally said what was on his mind. He wanted to go public. You couldn’t be more elated! You called your manager up and they had a whole strategic plan but you said that you wanted to be as spontaneous as possible.

Which is why, the two of you were now in a dressing room for a huge magazine cover shoot. You both (well, mainly you) had decided to go public in style! The photographer said that concept was about pillow talk. Think soft fabrics, loose clothing, unmade bed, messy hair, and natural makeup.

Everything felt very organic. You wore just a large t-shirt with messy hair while Nanami was going to be shirtless with sweatpants. The two of you posed for individual pictures first. You took a picture laying down, stretching, and then reaching towards the camera like you were reaching for your boyfriend’s face.

Nanami’s pictures had a more sensual vibe compared to yours. His pictures had him stare into the camera while leaning against a set window, lean back against the headboard with his arms crossed (making his pecs look absolutely stunning), and reading a book with one arm behind his head.

The pictures you two took together were quite romantic. The cover picture you both picked had his arm wrapped around you from behind while you sat in his lap, leaning back into his shoulder with a lazy smile. He looked stoic as usual (his manager told him not to go too crazy as his image was all about being strong and silent).

The photos came out and the world went CRAZY. You both got many compliments for your chemistry together and looking absolutely perfect even when you’re all messy. Fans clamored saying that they knew you both were together the entire time but were too afraid to reveal it. Not much changed but you both got a lot of positive attention by revealing your relationship. Obviously there were some negative aspects like tabloids talking about your supposed pregnancy or infidelity. But the two of you gracefully overcame them.

Cameramen at your concerts would purposefully point the camera at Nanami when you were doing a particularly sensual number. Everyone would cheer as soon as his flushed face would be displayed on the huge screens. Interviewers would quiz him on the lyrics of your songs (and he would always get them right). His fans began listening to your music and supporting you too.

In your case, many directors started considering you for more serious roles (perks of relationship nepotism). You would always be Nanami’s date at his premiers and you would be the first person he would thank in his award speeches.

And after a few years, when you guys get engaged, Architectural Digest would do a special segment where you both show off your vacation home in Kuantan, Malaysia.
