It's always disappointing when a series makes a big deal about societal and structural problems in it's setting, making readers think it has interesting things to say about the subject, only to then resolve the problems by fighting The CEO of Racism, John Racist, so that all of society's problems would then get better because they promoted a new CEO.

A few months ago I shared some of my Croc headcanons/theories on tt and one of the biggest ones I have that I always wanted to make art for is that he did the scar himself when he was younger to appear more threatening

SPOILERS FOR EGGHEAD

Oh this was a tough one

Bonney’s attack on Saturn ultimately didn’t work out, which is fair, he’s been set up as a godlike being along the other elders. However, this leads us to one of the most gut wrenching flashbacks in the entirety of One Piece, one I’d say is on par with Chopper’s backstory for me in terms of pain. The set up makes it clear that Bonney and Kuma believed in Nika, which is something very important for the themes of their story

Kuma has believed in Nika since childhood, his father teaching him about a god that brought smiles and freedom to the people. Kuma is seen as inferior cause of his bucaneer race, which results in his family becoming slaves for the celestial dragons, and yet he still clings onto the hope of freedom and joy. As he will throughout his whole life, which makes it all the more gut punching when his father is shot right in front of his face for simply dancing.

This leads us to the God Valley flashback, because if you didn’t think the celestial dragons were evil enough, they also hunt people for sport as entertainment when they need to get rid of the population of an island. Absolute cruelty and no humanity from them, as always. It also reminds me of colonialism, and the way natives have been killed or taken as slaves by the Europeans. God Valley also shows us the Rocks Pirates, finally, as well as a cameo from Roger, who looks so much like Ace it makes me want to cry.

Once he’s free, Kuma lives up to the gentle giant idea, taking over his father’s church as well as taking on the pain of the people around him, both metaphorically, through his stand against the cruel king of Sorbet kingdom, but also literally, using his paw paw fruit powers to redirect the pain onto himself, something only he and Ginny know about, and on the topic of Ginny man I adore her. They also join the revolutionaries, making the set up from marineford pay off completely

We are still in for pain and suffering, as Ginny’s death due to an illness after she was taken by Celestial Dragons, holding her baby, cursed with the same illness, in her arms, at least trying to save her. It hurts, and as Kuma sees Bonney for the first time, you already know he’ll do anything for his daughter. The father and daughter bond the two share is unbreakable, and Kuma will do anything, even lose his humanity, if it means saving her. It’s a cruel situation, but one Kuma won’t give up on, which is what makes it all the more tragic

And finally, we get to see some reactions of the people around the world to Kuma becoming a warlord. It’s a nice trip down memory lane, as well as a bit of characterisation for the characters included, and that’s great!
