hi hi! love your blog! I am also working on building sites for my portfolio but am a little stumped on how/where to deploy them. would you mind sharing what you are using for deployment? thanks!
Places to Deploy Your Website
Hiya! I know a few places I've tried in the past and some I am yet to try but I know other developers use them!
GitHub pages
GitHub Pages is a free static site hosting service that allows you to publish your website directly from a GitHub repository. It supports HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, as well as Jekyll, a static site generator. I used GitHub pages a lot since I use GitHub to keep all my repositories.
Replit
Replit is a cloud-based development environment that provides an integrated IDE, code editor, and hosting platform all in one place. With Replit, you can easily create and deploy web apps, games, and other projects in multiple programming languages such as Python, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. I use Replit a lot too for my other much smaller projects that I can’t upload on GitHub to run the program online!
Netlify
Netlify offers a free plan for static site hosting that includes features such as continuous deployment, custom domains, and SSL encryption. It supports HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, as well as serverless functions and other backend technologies.
Heroku
Heroku offers a free plan for hobbyist developers that allows you to deploy up to 5 applications. It supports many languages and frameworks, including Ruby, Node.js, Python, Java, PHP, and Go. Heroku allows free hosting for small applications.
Firebase Hosting
Firebase Hosting is a free service that allows you to host and deploy your web app or static content to a global content delivery network (CDN) with SSL encryption. It supports HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and other static assets. It allows free hosting for small applications.
Surge
Surge is a free static site hosting service that allows you to publish your website with a custom domain or a Surge subdomain. It supports HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and other static assets. Allows free hosting with unlimited bandwidth.
Each of these free deployment options has its own cons such as:
Its lack of server-side functionality
Limited database support
The cost of advanced features
Limited control over the infrastructure
May not be suitable for more complex websites or applications
However, for small projects, I think you’ll be fine with the free options!
Hoped this helps and good luck with your websites’ deployments! 🥰🙌🏾💗

What is running Bogleech.com like? What kinds of difficulties do you have running the site? How did you start it? What issues did you have to overcome back in its infancy? What advice would you give to someone who wants to make a similar personal blog site of their own?
There's nothing you have to do other than paying for your server and uploading your files in the right places! Things only get more complicated if you want to run special software for anything, or if you try to run a community that you need to moderate. Bogleech.com FIRST started as a geocities homepage between 1999 and 2001, and I built it using geocities own in-browser software, but since that made pages with its own weird original code, everything I made in it is utterly broken (older pages like the game sprite galleries) so that was the one problem that arose, but that was like 20 years ago. Now the site consists entirely of just text files in plain CSS code and whatever image files I need. I don't use any software to run or update it and still write it all manually, though I just started using the software "Bluegriffin" to make it even easier. You can open your html file in that and it displays it like it'll look in a browser, but you can write directly into it and add images like you can a tumblr post! Due to being built so manually my site still has no tagging or searching system for people to find my articles, or anything that automatically archives updates. I just add updates as new links on my main page by hand, and write lots of links into the same page to make my own archive pages. There are definitely various programs and services for automating a lot of all that, but I personally like being able to design everything my own way!

Credit: ac0rn5 UK Spring Budget 2024 announcement.Injured Service Person and Veterans Support: Invictus Games 2027 bid – The government, through the Office of Veterans’ Affairs, is supporting the UK’s bid to host the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham with a £26 million underwrite to enable the bid. These Games will ensure that injured service personnel and veterans are not forgotten, and will showcase the power of sport in recovery and rehabilitation demonstrating that there is life beyond disability.https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/spring-budget-2024/spring-budget-2024-htmlBirmingham City Council is Europe’s largest local authority. 3 Game/Coding Resources!
I wanted to put together a few resources I found for people who might be planning to make games, or might be looking to learn coding!
The first resource is for anyone looking to learn how to code, build a portfolio, and get Certifications:
This is something I've recently been using myself and I can attest that it is an excellent resource!! They have many different paths you can learn, and right now I’m on the Responsive Web Design Certification. You can learn HTML and CSS, in order to create responsive pages. It teaches you through projects, where it breaks down different parts of the coding language and shows you how to use it. Some projects are optional, and some you have to complete in order to earn your certification. Certification projects don’t have instructions, only a rubric of what the project needs to be able to do, but you can learn all those skills in the optional projects! They also have Javascript, Frontend Development, Information Security… the list goes on! The website is run by a really cool non profit. I definitely recommend giving it a try!!
2. The second is for game developers who are looking for background music:
@/茶葉のぎか (Nogika Chaba on twitter) makes some really awesome 8bit-sounding BGM! And a lot of it is free for commercial/non commercial use!!
Make sure to check the description (you can translate to your language) for their policies. Many of their videos are tagged #freeBGM, which if you check their Pixiv Fanbox terms of service (in the desc of each video, please do check it before you use it) states that you are able to use the music in commercial/non commercial works:
2. The third resource is for students:
Whether you're a university student, college, high school, or elementary, Github gives you free Github pro, as well as a curation of free offers! You do need a piece of student ID (proof that you indeed belong to an institution, eg. report card, student card, etc), but it has a host of offers. Microsoft offers free cloud training through this, there are multiple offers for learning a new coding language for free (eg. Codedex free 6-month subscription, which will also give you certificates once completed), you can get free domain names, the list goes on! If you are a student, I highly recommend that you give it a try, since it's 100% free!

Hello, wanted to say I read and loved the demo. Very well done. I just had a few questions, would love to know what Twine Template you use, especially at the beginning. Where you have the character creator, I love that the box around your selection changes to say/match what you chose. Such as depending on what skin color I choose it changes to signify that. Would love to know if you would share how you did that. I look forward to future updates! Best of luck.
Thank you! 🤍
I'm using the default template for SugarCube, if I remember correctly. Glad that you liked the box effect, it was my solution to reducing the number of passages whilst still allowing the validation of user input in character creation.
I did it through a combination of HTML tags and SugarCube native macros. Technical stuff under the cut:
Here is an example for eye color:
<fieldset class="charbox"><legend id="chareyes" class="chartxt">$p.appearance.eyes</legend> <div class="charoptions">Your eyes are: <<link "hazel">><<set $p.appearance.eyes to "hazel">><<replace "#chareyes">>$p.appearance.eyes<</replace>><</link>> <<link "brown">><<set $p.appearance.eyes to "brown">><<replace "#chareyes">>$p.appearance.eyes<</replace>><</link>> [rest of the options removed for brevity]</div> </fieldset>
The fieldset and the legend HTML tags together form a single box, a so-called legend, which I declare per attribute such as name, skin color, etc. You need a fieldset to make legend work iirc, but legend is where that text is displayed and it is positioned on the box frame by default. Important here is to give a unique ID to the legend tag ("chareyes" in this case), as we are interested in manipulating the text shown in it depending on our box.
In the sample above, the options I present for the eye color are listed within the Twine <<link>> tags. For these links there is no target passage to go to. Instead, you can see it is coded to do two things upon clicking the respective option. One, setting a game variable to the selected color.
<<set $p.appearance.eyes to "brown">>
Two, triggering a replace command to change the value shown in the legend to the description of the selected eye color according to the variable we have set in the same line. This is the bit you are asking about:
<<replace "#chareyes">>$p.appearance.eyes<</replace>>
Replace triggers without changing passages, so this way you can adjust multiple variables on a single "page". You'd obviously need to adjust the corresponding CSS classes to make it look the desired way, but the mechanics are serviced with just this idea above.
Hope this helps!

Was watching a video about lost media for the Wii and the dude straight up said that Japanese people are gatekeeping information as if thats just not extremely racist.
I decided to take two seconds to do this racist' dumbfuck's job for him since he can't be assed to do any research beyond having seen a small thread about it on Twitter.
The Wii Fit Body Check Channel
Source: Innervision (https://www.innervision.co.jp/12SP/2009_04item/boo_panasonic/repo_panasonic.html)
The Wii Fit Body Check Channel (Will be referred too as Wii Fit BCC for brevity) also known as "Wii Fit からだチェックチャンネル" (Wii Fit Karadachekku Chan'neru) was developed in around 2009 by Nintendo to be utilized with a service developed by Nippon Electric Company, Panasonic, and Hitachi.
According to this article it was a health promotion service offered to employees and their families. (Quote below, Google Translated)
NEC and NEC Mobile Link will begin offering a service that links the health promotion support service using mobile phones that was launched in December last year with "Wii Fit Body Check Channel" via the Internet to employees and families of the NEC Group from April. By using the SaaS platform provided by NEC, small-scale use is also possible, and the company aims to introduce the service in 150 cases over the next three years, including sales to outside the group.
The system allowed for people to measure themselves via the Wii Fit BCC and send the results to health guidance services and receive advice back via email.
Source: Hitachi News Release (https://www.hitachi.co.jp/New/cnews/month/2009/01/0127.html)
According to the originally linked article, the future plan was to then use the measurement data "to create unique instruction programs for instructors and training organizations, and provide it as an ASP service."
However it seems to have potentially never made it out of its initial prototypes as according to this last sentence from the article:
Hitachi will begin prototyping the system in-house from February and will make a decision based on the results.
Some additional things
I also found this press release from NEC regarding the software. It lists the following main features (Google Translated):
Here's Nintendo's as well however there's not much new information besides mentioning how step data from the DS game "Walking to Understand Life Rhythms DS" can also be utilized.
Hitachi's goes into a bit more detail regarding other aspects on how users would have two-way communication with instructors through the channel:
Overall, with what we know of the software, it likely never made it to these stages of development or had any of these features implemented before quietly getting completely shelved.
Additional Sources/Articles
"Wii Fit Body Check Channel" uses Wii for remote health guidance service (Markezine)
NEC launches health promotion support service in collaboration with "Wii Fit" (NEC Press Release)
"Wii Fit Body Check Channel" developed to support specific health guidance system for Wii; electronics manufacturer to start offering to health insurance associations from April (Nintendo Press Release)
Developing a remote health guidance platform system linked to "Wii Fit" (Hitachi Press Release)
Panasonic web page showing slide show of products (I didn't see anything regarding BCC on this page but it was linked by another article so I'm putting it here for prosperity sake)
"Plissimo Sigusa" is a specific health guidance support system that can be linked to the home video game console "Wii" (Innervision, showcases a setup of channel with a balance board)
#wii#Nintendo Wii#wii fit#Nintendo#lost media#there might be other stuff I'm missing these are just what I was able to find with a basic Google search of the Japanese name#but y'know ''the Japanese are gatekeeping knowledge from us!!!!''#rambles#I didn't check any lost media wiki or anything else doing this btw I found all this on my own#cw racism#undescribed

You are free to pick whatever size you want for your card as well. Yes, even a 1x1 size, if you believe that is all you will be able to handle for this event.
You can "re-roll" your card as many times as you want until you are satisfied with one. Either take a screenshot of it or copy the html code. Then post your card somewhere (doesn't really matter where, just needs to be somewhere you can link back to once you post your work(s)).
(While card posts won't be reblogged, do still feel free to tag them with the 'Happy Kiss Appreciation Bingo 2024' tag if you wish!)
After that, off you go to making your fanworks! Be they fanart, fanfic, gifs, edits, cosplay, videos, whatever you wish! And make as many or as few works as you want! A single fanwork can count as a fill for more than one square on the card.
Posting will mainly happen throughout the whole month of April, but you are still free to post stuff for the challenge after that as well. On Tumblr, post your stuff with the 'Happy Kiss Appreciation Bingo 2024' tag (or @ this blog since sometimes Tumblr decides to be Tumblr). And like last year, there will be an AO3 collection that will be made closer to the date of the event.
So here we go! If you still have any questions, feel free to send an ask! Looking forward to see what everyone makes in a few months!

Day 745
When the public service announcements first came out on TV, warning folks about phishing scams and other ways unsavoury folks may try to use to get your banking information via email my parents, ever the responsible and loving, warned both my sister and me about the internet dangers.
I didn’t have the heart to tell my parents I had already learnt about phishing scams
When I was 15 years old on the virtual pet site, Neopets.
Cause you know… that’s a weird thing to let your parents know.
The worst part about that fact though is that, even in context, it doesn’t get any less strange. If anything, context makes the whole fact even stranger.
How much stranger?
For starters, Neopets launched in 1999; while online banking had existed before then, the general public wouldn’t start buying into online banking until after 2000, (thanks to the Y2K scare). Even after 2000, the uptick in both domestic and business use of online banking was not fast. At the age of 21, 6 years after Neopets launched, I still needed to get a cheque book, because paying large sums of money for things (like my insurance provider) didn't happen online. As a result, needing to teach children about phishing scams in that era, was way before its time.
But the folks at Neopets had to, because for whatever reason, the site had a scamming problem.
This is where it gets really, really weird, even for me. Logically, I suspect the reason why Neopets had scamming problems in the first place was due to the conflict between their player demographics. The site was (originally) designed to be absolutely free to play, and safe for children. Their original demographic was probably the ages between 9-12 years, with the children needing at least a 3rd to 4th grade level reading in order to keep up with what was going on around the site.
However, their primary demographic was probably closer to my age at the time, 14 to 16 years old. You can kind of tell this, if you’ve ever read the old Neopian Times newsletters, which were filled with site updates, but also stories, comics and art made by the members of the Neopets community. The quality of the work suggested that many players were of an older age range. Old enough to know how to use html coding (which was commonly used for websites) and old enough that the dishonest ones were going to try and scam the younger players out of their stuff.
Still, it always boggled my mind that anyone would go through the effort to scam players out of their accounts. It got so bad that Neopets at one point started implementing account confirmation techniques, like the site showing you your last active pet to re-confirm that you’re on the Neopets website and not a phishing site. A technique that banks would use for a small while by asking you to choose a picture they would then show you, to confirm that you’re on your bank’s website.
As a result, the folks at Neopets for a long while had to put out their own PSAs about how to spot a phishing scam and other types of scams. So there’s now a whole generation of Neopet players who are careful (I hope ) of phishing scams and the like, because they were taught to be from a virtual pet game, due to players scamming other players.
A fact that will never stop being funny to me.
