I'm not really sure how I feel about Howliday Cleo. She's not very wintery, except for the snowflakes on her...shawl? drape? Idk what to call that. They feel very tacked on. Though none of the other Howliday dolls have felt very holiday/wintery either. The shape of the skirt is obviously the Thing about her that you love or hate. I like that it's based on ancient Egyptian fashion. I like the texture of the fabric. I like the stitching on her top, and the headpiece is fun. I know some people don't like how overwhelming all the gold is.
I'm really on the fence here. I think if she goes significantly on sale, like twenty five bucks, I'll probably pick her up. I like how unique and different she is, I definitely like her more than Howliday Clawdeen (whose ideas I liked but the execution was not it). She looks more like a depiction of an Egyptian god than she does any kind of mummy, but maybe that's the point? Idk I feel like she's the kind that will grow on me until I buy her. Or not! This is why I won't buy her full price, I'm so indecisive on her design. Maybe if she goes on store shelves and I see her in person I'll have a more definitive opinion.

When it comes to the whole "object heels" thing, my opinion is basically that sometimes they're clever and cool, and sometimes they're a little too on the nose where they just come across as kinda corny (and downright ugly in some cases)
Overall though, I think the designers at Mattel are over-relying on them right now for Skullector dolls, to the point where they're not really exciting. You can design really cool shoes without defaulting to just slapping an overly complicated shape as a heel and calling it a day. Gen 1, and even Gen 3, have plenty of examples.

Here’s the thing about the Howlidays dolls that bother me the most: they don’t look anything like Holiday dolls.
Draculaura was the most successful one, assumedly because she’s Draculaura. But out of these three, she’s also the ONLY ONE who actually looks like she’s designed for winter/“holidays” (I put that in quotes because holidays usually just means Christmas). I think all the black should’ve been white personally since it’s more winter/holiday and it Is one of dracs colours (pink, black, white, and later yellow) and then black accents but still. The bauble earrings, the striped gloves, the snowflake patterning and headpiece, the crystalline sparkle boots. It all comes together and makes a nice kind of gothic wintery look.
But Clawdeen??? And especially Cleo??? Neither of them look anywhere like Holiday, especially winter holidays. Skelita’s previous and next Howliday doll get a pass from me because they’re supposed to be Day of the Dead, although they’re still not worth a collector price point imo.
I really like Howliday Clawdeen, but she doesn’t look holiday At All. I keep thinking she’s a lounge singer tbh, I always think there’s a microphone in her stock image before I realize she’s just holding her fur piece. And that Fur Piece is the only wintery thing, and the spider web details are the only think that connects to Draculaura’s Howliday design.
Then Cleo. That poor girl. Not even her lips escaped gold-ification. It feels like they heard every criticism of Cleo’s looks and tried to fix it in the worst way possible. Less reliance on wrappings??? A bunch of Egyptian style clothing pieces that don’t go together. Less blue??? Entirely Gold. Unless awards season counts as a holiday to you, she does not read “Howliday”. And I’d love to know the thought process behind releasing this right after Mummy Majesties, like comparing that Cleo to this one, this one feels like an unfinished concept to me.
These ones almost read like G1 versions of the Fearidescent line, being mostly one colour down to the lips. They could’ve had so much potential, having different dolls based on different holiday/winter activities. Or better yet, dolls based on holidays of different cultures. Imagine a doll dressed in fancy or traditional clothes, with a mini comic or diary detailing their traditions and what they do, and an accessory or two relating to it, a special food or object.
Idk, it could’ve been so neat.
(I’ve seen people mourning the fact this means no Howliday Abbey, but I’m also mourning the fact we got two subpar valentines sets rather than a Super Fancy Collector Cupid for Valentines)

On one hand it does seem like Mattel has something against Cleo because all of her gen 1 style collector dolls have been bad, but on the other hand she has a lot of collector dolls, on par with Draculaura if I'm not mistaken, so they can't hate her that much.
I just don't get why they have such a hard time capturing her style. Every collector doll she's gotten, her face has looked completely different, and nothing like her original face up. And I think out of all the characters, her style in gen 3 is still pretty similar to gen 1, and she's had some banger gen 3 dolls as of late. Yet her gen 1 style dolls outfits really do look akin to to gen 2, maybe late stage gen 1 if we're being generous.
