Our DM: Spends two hours openly despairing at our party, despite being very willing to press big red buttons and generally cooperative when it comes to plot hooks, blithely missing like seven sidequests on our way into Barovia, Barovia because the module is constructed in such a way that it's less "well why would my character pick up this plot hook" and more "oh shit that was a plot hook??? But why?? It just seemed like environmental storytelling illustrating that the area is dangerous, what was it even trying to get us to DO"

Me: [rubbing my hands, delighted] Well I don't know about YOU guys but Atri accomplished almost everything she wanted to do in the Death House, well done team hit the showers.

i cannot for the life of me remember who made that post with the headcanon about the black family losing a lot of their wealth.

but i've been thinking about it a lot. and in england from early to mid 1900s, the aristocracy changed fundamentally as a class, they lost a lot of their previous held power as well as a lot of their money. and because of this, they either had to get a job (the aristocracy is the leisure class. they don't work), which means leaving behind the traditions of your class and your family in order to modernise and keep your money/power, or they could sell off their large estates/lands/artworks in order to keep tradition of the aristocracy as much as they could, but it meant losing a lot of money/power.

there's this quote describing this change in the aristocracy actually- "less power, more prestige". in staying with the traditions of old money, they lose the power they had in government/economy/whatever, but gain lots of admiration and respect from society- like they still have honour and integrity despite losing their money and power, which then becomes their primary tool in still being seen as an influential family.

and with the black family being known as "the noble and most ancient house of black", that definitely could show they chose that pathway. they're clinging onto their lineage of nobility in a time when the aristocracy as a class and the idea of high society is very much falling apart. and unlike quite a lot of these families, they don't modernise but instead keep their heads high and very much make it known that they are nobility and an ancient family, and have no intentions of disrupting this and losing the meaning of what being an aristocrat and a noble used to mean.

#also their motto being “always pure”. like i know its about purebloods and shit #but i do think there's an element of clinging onto traditions #in early 1900s was the rise of celebrities (actors/musicians/writers) surpassing a lot of religious or noble figures in pop culture #and then aristocracts then began to marry these sort of new money celebrities (although not all of them new money #i just mean not following traditions of high society and upper class #and the always pure motto could be very much a clear statement of outrage at this. of class becoming less about lineage #and more about who's the got the bigger wallets and the better parties #sorry i'm doing a module in uni rn about the monarchy and the british classes in early to mid 1900s soo #marauders era #marauders #the black family #the noble and most ancient house of black

so it turns out it was actually never that serious

#the exam literally went fine what the fuck just happened i feel like i just hallucinated that #like im not one of those people that go 'omg i did soooo badly :(' just to come out with top grades if i say it's going to shit #then it's becuase i genuinely wholeheartedly believe it #and my headspace before this exam was the worst it's been in MONTHS like i havent felt that bad for an exam since first year #and i sat down opened the paper and. remembered everything. like i literally just Knew the answers #im not saying ive passed bc am i fuck about to jinx it and i was still riding mainly blind bc i have NO idea where that knowledge came from #but at the very least there was a 35 marker that i KNOW i aced like i could picture the exact lecture slides it wanted me to discuss #and i had all of them memorised so at the very least ive got like. 30 marks. which is enough for me to pass the module #bc this exam is only weighted 75% and with my marks from the other 25% i only needed like 20 marks to pass this exam #which... makes it even more embarrassing that i failed it the first time but whatever!!!!#oh my god im so glad that's done im so happy IM FREE #just been in the kitchen dancing around to my little tunes and texting my friends <3 #im meeting up with one of them when she gets off work at 5 and we're going for drinks #so ive got until then to nap and chill and then ill go to the shop and get us some food and wine #and she's gonna come here for a bit & then we'll go. like actually look at me. im having people over at MY HOUSE im going out to buy us WIN #im literally a functioning adult living independently who IS she a misty memory #alas i do only have £23 in my account so this is gonna be such a slay seeing how i make that stretch for a night out #i acc could budget for england when it comes to alcohol i think like the way i manage to have a good funky time with MINIMAL funds #is downright impressive. it's a skill idc what you say #hella goes to uni

#totk spoilers #tears of the kingdom #the legend of zelda #tloz #zelink #since the modules don't come with windows i used a paddock as one of the walls of the house on the ground floor #i put a study on the 1st floor for zelda and put a pond and flower garden plot on the deck outside of it #the study is bracketed by a foyer and the pond so that she'd be in a semi-enclosed space but with a window/ w the pond border windowsill #the house has another pond and garden plot out front/ on the side of it #a furnished square room as the dining room #no blessing rooms or weapons racks in this house i don't want to remind zelda of the struggle #i also fused everything together with ultrahand before calling grantéson over to inspect so the joinery would be seamless

#hello it is sarah in the tags again #i feel like i tell myself i'll actually use this as a blog and then i forget and then i remember and then i forget again #venting ahead if that is not ur jam (talking to the 2 followers who actually see my posts)#i like tumblr because it;s so removed from my personal life that it feels really like a place i dont have to be anything for anyone #anyway i've been wondering if i should go back to therapy again but i feel like they might get tired of me because i keep bailing and comin #back like an addict lol like i swear i'll commit this time! sike. ghost be upon ye #anyway this time i'd come in for the big D #i don't like the floor it just feels closer to being six feet under and a bit like where i belong #i feel like a great number of things have happened in the past year and i've met all of it with a very lukewarm sense of dread and anxiety #its not even about feeling happy i dont even think i can feel shaken by anything. i feel like people see my apathy and think it's confidenc #anyway im not going back. they always say the same thing. can't do shit about shit life syndrome. and i don't want pills i'm so sick of the #isn't it something that i'm especially depressed the day before i start my new job? it's a tradition at this point. cheers #isn't it cruel that everyone in my life seem to put me on some kind of bizarre pedestal and no one questions my decisions or authority and #i battle with myself to figure out if i'm doing the right thing (no one will tell me the truth they are all scared of me getting angry)#was talking with a friend about how it'll be if i join their group project in a module we're taking soon.#and she's like well isn't it obvious? everyone will just listen to whatever you say and we'll end up doing well.#no one would challenge you because you're always right. and it's like.. yeah. i guess. okay.
