As a retired pediatrician, my way into disasters and wars is often to imagine what’s going in the hospital. Thank you to Ami Prasad, editor of Topical Poetry, for publishing my poem “Sabbath Night in Al-Zaytun.”

A and E Waiting Room: a love song
I got sick and I didn’t get better, not yet, so I am
Sitting around this waiting room thinking:
Tell me I’m fine? Tell me I’m not imagining it,
but tell me I’m fine, please and make me believe it?
I won’t put a full stop on these sentences -
Sitting alone here, nobody with me, no one here just to look after me -
All of us strangers in the night here, some in groups, nursing their own problems -
Avoiding eye contact, it’s like being on the tube, except everyone here is sick -
But angel, you wrote to me again -
The day I tell you I’m coughing up blood you break your habit and write me back sooner,
Back and forth it’s almost like you’re here, and it’s not a coincidence - you care,
And I love you. I love you.
And my cryface is coming on with the heat and the tightening behind the eyes -
And I wish you were really here -
And this is something to think about besides death, I’m letting myself long for you -
At the end of the summer, smiling at me all along the river -
When I’m so scared that I cannot think about the fear, it’s you I turn away to,
And when I see you turn to me, I wish and want for more, and more, and -

richard siken also just published two new poems—sidewalk and metonymy—and i recommend reading them in that order, the end of one seems to start the other. if we’re getting sequences out of mr siken this may be the end of me i fear

“If I Must Die, You Must Live, To Tell My Story.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If I must die, you must live to tell my story to sell my things to buy a piece of cloth and some strings, (make it white with a long tail) so that a child, somewhere in Gaza while looking heaven in the eye awaiting his dad who left in a blaze— and bid no one farewell not even to his flesh not even to himself— sees the kite, my kite you made, flying up above and thinks for a moment an angel is there bringing back love If I must die let it bring hope let it be a tale

Henry is a reflection of Joel more than ever. He’s a protecter, a calcified caretaker, the sole embodiment of a man who’ll put the one person he cares about over everything. Henry was willing to indirectly kill who he perceived as a “great man” for the sole benefit of ensuring the good health of his brother. Nothing could substitute the love he had for Sam, and no moral boundary could obstruct the insurmountable desire and determination to cement his well-being. Joel will end up the exact same way for Ellie. Henry’s also a cautionary tale that serves as a warning for the forces he’ll anger, and that what goes around comes around. The past came back to haunt Henry due to the decision he made. To him, the world did revolve around Sam. He did think he was worth everything, and he was willing to sacrifice anything or anyone for him. Joel will end up the exact same way for Ellie. And because of the choice Henry made, one way or another, that retroactively sealed his fate. Joel will end up the exact same way. This iteration of Henry in the show is the epitome of Joel; nearly verbatim. And the series of events that transpired because of the choice he made for the person he cared for forewarns him

#2: For the Children in the Incubators- The Babies of Al-Shifa Hospital
You came too early in this world to survive on your own
Just in time to experience war
Too late to stop it-
The power cords unplugged, oxygen cut.
As I watch my son grow
I think of the milestones you will never reach-
A subtle smile at 6 weeks,
Soon after, shining brightly for your mother
Holding your head up at 4 months
Ready to take in the curious sites of the world
Crawling at 7 months
Finally able to move on your own without anyone holding on to you
First steps at 12 months,
At last your feet touch the ground
As you run in the gardens of heaven,
I hope his feet touch the land yours never did–
The land of our ancestors.
Free.

The niceties It’s sterile here, brightly lit with huge colorful pictures and lots of wood and vinyl furniture arranged neatly for maximum seating with minimal interaction. Being escorted from one waiting area to another, oddly territorial within seconds, claiming a little pocket of space and air while I wait. There is tea and I feel a little like I’m amid a war, between battles of flesh and time, coming to a place where we lose bits of ourself piece by piece with the niceties like tea to make us pretend it’s ok.
