Mucus Buster
Everyone's got lingering congestion this year, so as someone who's no stranger to phlegm, and inherited the folk wisdom of a stage actress (the show must go on!) I share with you my recipe for making things better:
2L water
the juice and rind of one lemon (just dump the juiced rinds in, don't zest them, you maniac)
a small thumb of fresh ginger, sliced in coins
about a dozen cloves, some star anise, peppercorns, and maybe whole cinnamon or allspice or whatever else you like, in a tea ball (except the cinnamon if it doesn't fit, obvs)
good dollop of honey, to taste
Bring the water to a boil then dump in all the stuff. Keep it hot but not boiling – a slow cooker is good for this. Keep this pot on a low heat all day and serve yourself a mug every so often, adding water as necessary. At some point you will need to add a new lemon and some more honey, but the spices can generally carry over two pots if you're drinking it regularly.
The acid helps clear the gunk, ginger is good for the circulation, and clove/aniseed/pepper have some sort of decongestant/soothing properties. Honey is both nice and antiseptic, and apparently is a cough suppressant as well? Anyway, I just got over another run of Covid and this was wasn't 100% effective but it worked better than phenylephrine.

Apparently there's a Dutch essential oil company who is putting recipes on pinterest for "morphine" and "paracetamol" which are PURE oils that you put in a capsule and then take every few hours.
They also recommend to give their anti stress blend to your child IN AN INHALOR to take to school.
So here's you annual reminder that essential oils are dangerous and should not be taken internally or topically without consulting a professional herbalist and/or you doctor
(And yes, I did report them for medical misinformation)

I'm sick
And since I have the joy of the sexy sexy mid-February-cold I (and a bunch of people I know) get very reliably every year, I thought I'd use the opportunity to share some wisdoms my mother (a German housewife if there ever was one) taught me.
Sage Tea
Honestly. If you are German, you know the damn magic that resides in sage tea when you have a sore throat. Either you love it or you hate it but it helps better than anything else. (You can also directly chew the leaves if you prefer)
Inhaling Menthol (and Lavender)
Get yourself a bowl of boiling water and put some menthol ointment and lavender (dried or extract) in there. Then you hold your head over that bowl (putting a towel over your head+bowl will help even better but you will also feel like steamed salmon after). Be warned though: The menthol burns your eyes wickedly so if you are sensitive I'd suggest using diving goggles or something to protect your eyes from the steam.
Rinsing your nose with saline
A very fair word of warning about that one: You will fucking hate it. It burns like shit, you will cry, it's disgusting, and you will despise every second of it. But your nose will be clearer than ever before in your life after that. You'll breathe clearly the whole night. Don't do this one too often though and be warned that it requires a little bit of practice to actually make the water go all the way through. This is really the last resort.
Put a Hot Bean Bag/Hot Water Bottle on your Chest
I honestly don't know the science behind that one but it does seem to ease up congestion for me.
Warm Milk with Honey
My father swears by this, but I actually hate warm milk (cold is fine for me and I drink warm cocoa but pure warm milk is the devil's piss imo), so I can't confirm or deny it.
Chicken Soup
This is possibly the most German thing on this list but it's true. Chicken Soup cures any illness quicker than any drug could. You can make it only with the bones if you don't want any meat in your soup but it gotta be chicken and it gotta be in there while you cook. No one knows why this works but not other soups but it's a fact of life.
If you're sick too, get well soon. And if you aren't stay healthy.

Hi, fun addition from a possibly 3rd generation chemist!! (grandmother + mother work[ed] in pharmaceuticals as a pharmacist and pharm tech, and I just think herbalism and organic chemistry is neat)
This is actually partially why raspberry is such a common flavor with medication. I don't remember what chemical/compound exactly, but it's pretty good at masking the flavor of things.
I made fire cider in a class at a witchy shop in town and it smells/tastes AWFUL. Like I full on gag from the smell alone BUT I made raspberry syrup. And I started using that to mask the taste, and it worked! It didn't quite mask the burning of the vinegar and other spicy ingredients in my throat and back of my tongue, but chasing it with another drink raspberry or just otherwise potent tasting took care of that.
Both synthetic (like Torani) and homemade raspberry syrups work for this. You're gonna wanna mix it strong to mask the taste, but it's definitely worth looking into.
Same applies for taking a tincture. Mix it up with some raspberry syrup water and just take it like a shot while holding your breath.
And if it's a tea, hibiscus flowers actually work REALLY well to make it more fruit-like! Be careful though, hibiscus tea is a diuretic (helps your body flush stuff out) and caffeine is dehydrating. Make sure to water it down if you plan on drinking it throughout the day. And have a drink for hydration through the day too

A Wealth of Practical Knowledge
This brand new edition of The Home Doctor impressed me from the start. The book is a comprehensive guide to practical medicine for every household. I found the use of illustrations and diagrams particularly helpful, as they visually represent complex medical procedures
Building a Well-Stocked Home Medical Kit
One of the most valuable aspects of The Home Doctor is its guidance on building a well-stocked home medical kit. The book outlines essential supplies and medications to have on hand, along with tips on storage and organization. This ensures you're prepared to handle minor injuries and illnesses at home, potentially avoiding unnecessary trips to the doctor. The book doesn't shy away from discussing more serious medical situations either. Steve and Eddie are sharing a joint, sitting in Steve's car. They're just talking about random shit, when Steve goes to apply chapstick. And that made him think about lipstick.
Steve likes lipstick. He voices this opinion. Likes the pop of color that draws the eyes. Likes how it emphasizes lips, makes them look even more kissable. Likes the marks they leave on the skin when kissing. It gets him all hot just thinking about the trail leading down and down-
And Eddie. Eddie just shrugs and returns to puffing on the joint they are sharing. Says he's never experienced it. Which, Steve thinks is criminal. Sure, Eddie is gay and it's the 1980s, but lipstick is just makeup and anyone should be able to wear makeup. I mean, Steve isn't shy to wearing lip gloss not that he advertises it.
So, Steve digs around his car, finds the lipstick that Robin left. He applies a thick layer to his lips, smacking them a few times. "I'll prove it, come here," Steve says leaning into Eddie's space.
And Eddie is wide eyed but agrees.
One kiss leads to two. Which leads to Steve pressing open mouthed kisses into Eddie's neck. Eddie moans and Steve whispers in his ear," I've wanted to do this for awhile,, you're so hot." Which leads to Eddie's shirt coming off. Leads to red lipstick trailing down Eddie's chest and down and down and
Yeah, Steve was right. Lipstick is hot.

Improve Digestion, Detox, And More With Pineapple Peel Water
Read about the benefits of pineapple peels!
Pineapple peels Earlier, my kids asked me to chop up the pineapple that’s probably already sat on my counter for a few days. I don’t like wasting extras when I prepare food. So, I either try to plant it, grind it, use it, or boil it down into some sort of beneficial concoction. At the end of my search, I found these cool useful benefits of the pineapple peel. When the body takes in the water…

Oops this is happening 😳. Sorry that I keep posting wips (blugh and scheduled ones, no less), but HE is constantly on my brain! !!
TBB S3 Spoiler comment: Because the “shadow” took a ROYAL beating in 3x7, and if “The damage [Echo] sustained on Skako Minor most likely wiped out all of [his] preset behavioral modifications,” then maybe… just maybe X trooper training won’t stick … my tinfoil hat is vibrating 🙏🏼😬.
