The BBC is continuing to cut its drama department, so I'm reposting drawings that have been inspired by BBC radio productions ...

Radio 4 Extra is rerunning the excellent radio play of The Idiot, so I finally took the time to do this title up right (by which I mean, of course, deeply inappropriately). It so amused me, when I was working at Disney, and people would call anything mildly unpleasant “dark” – no no, this is dark.
I don’t usually like 19th Century drawing-room dramas, as they seem so petty, but Dostoevsky sees right through it and calls them out on their pettiness and I respect him for that. Yes, it’s dark. Humanity is dark. If you haven’t had to come to grips with that yourself, well, bless your heart.
Oh, also, Roger Allam is in it.

The better part of the last three days has been spent listening (and relistening) to A Place of Greater Safety. At first I wasn’t keen on the embedded double-narrator conceit, but once I learned to tell the male one from all the other men, they’ve grown on me a lot. Give it a listen, see what you think! Episode 1 throws a lot at you but it’s all worth it for Episode 3 … just get to Episode 3.

Pre-pandemic, Cambridge was blessed with the occasional street concert by The Trials of Cato. It was fab. These are sketches of the band (as it was then) and people passing by.
If you sign up to my Patreon, you will get sketchbook posts a lot sooner than seven years after I draw them ...

4 April 2018 at the best sketching joint in Cambridge, The Mill. Sightlines in three directions, lots of tourists, a good mix of demographics, everyone occupied with something else and not looking at their phones. (Generally.)
Sketches get posted in a much more timely manner over on my Patreon ...

it’s been so much fun seeing all of your older radio drawings again! I used to see these back in the old LJ days, and then go listen to the radio dramas I hadn’t heard yet. It’s giving me good nostalgia…
Awww, thank you so much for saying so! I never knew if anyone cared about my radio links on LJ so it's wonderful to hear you used them to check out new stuff. ♥

Wait! Which radio drama do you listen to for Holmes?
The BBC adaptations by Bert Coules, starring Clive Merrison and Michael Williams as Holmes and Watson, respectively. You can find useful information here: http://merrisonholmes.com/

World Radio Day is 13 February, so to stand up for the wealth of quality audio drama on the BBC, which is continuing to cut its drama department, I'm reposting drawings that have been inspired by BBC radio productions ... or in this case, engaging with BBC radio productions on a very personal level.

I’ve been going through saving images off my (now defunct) Photobucket accounts, and found this from 2012. My inner thoughts are bounced off a fictional alternate-history detective rather than a real polar explorer, for once, but the result is the same.
I highly recommend the Fatherland radio play – Radio 4 Extra hasn’t rerun it in a while but I think it’s on iTunes – and also not getting involved in a highly competitive personality-driven art department.

This is Charlotte Maguire, plucky American journalist, from the outstanding radio adaptation of Robert Harris' Fatherland.

Twenty years on from hearing Fatherland for the first time, and I'm even more in awe of its mastery of audio storytelling. Firing on all cylinders. Give it a listen if you can.

The radio adaptation of Robert Harris’ Fatherland is, in my opinion, a shining example of the dramatic adaptation of literary fiction … but rather than celebrate this in art, I poke fun at how everyone’s always bumming smokes off Inspector March.

This was less 'inspired by a production' and more 'what happens in an animation studio when your colleagues aren't listening to Radio 4', but ... it counts.

While I was drawing the image posted yesterday, my coworker was listening to ‘Welcome to the Jungle.' It was distracting but also a little hilarious.

Holmes is a bit on edge in ‘The Final Problem’ and briefly takes refuge in Watson’s kitchen. Being chased by assassins will do that to a man.

Comedy (some topical, some not), drama (all of it escapist in some way or another), and an Edwardian with a twist.
~ ~ ~ AND ~ ~ ~
If you think radio plays are generally summed up by John Finnemore’s (admittedly brilliant) Radio 4 Drama sketch, give a listen to this:
Erebus leapt out of the Afternoon Drama slot back in 2012 and punched me in the ears. I don’t even know how to describe it – ‘poetic drama’ barely gets you halfway – more like an utterly transportive sound/prose/music collage? It’s really set the bar for what radio is capable of, to me, so why not give it a spin if you want to leave this world behind for three quarters of an hour …
