As an aside on the memorization thing, I would argue for most humans we haven't lost an iota of memorization, it is simply dispersed over a wider area.
I don't listen to just local May Day and Harvest songs, church choirs, and whatever performances a traveler brought, on any given day a 30min commute each way will play 20 songs and tomorrow that's another 20 songs, and the next day another 20. And I don't have to just remember the rhythm and pace of mass but the words of the books, news articles, social media updates of friends, menus of local restaurants, current locations of favoured food trucks, etc that I encounter every week if I want to apply that knowledge when I encounter/plan something next week. Talking about the Hunger Games movie isn't just remembering the plot and pacing, its recalling Battle Royale, the social standards of when it came out and the inspirations of when the books were written, as well as the other works of the actors. And then I have to do that for hundreds of movies and thousands of episodes of TV. Just look how much there is to think about, know, and retain just with the MCU. And, I, personally, *suck* at modern media trivia and yet still am somehow the person people turn to for that very thing because in certain areas I retain a ton of it.
And my job isn't just painting or leatherworking or carpentry or farming. As an accountant I have to be familiar with GAAP and SOX and the tax rules of the IRS and sales and use, property, income, and payroll taxes of 1 to 50 states (and hundreds to thousands of municipalities) and also IFRS and FAR if I end up in an applicable organization, and that doesn't even begin to touch on how many regulations are applied to the field in medical insurance or government and grant. And then knowing how to use five of the major seven ERP systems I may be asked to work in depending on who I work for, and then the dozens of additional, specialty softwares/services standard to accounting work to say nothing of the advanced Excel skills needed and how that translates in a shared work environment or ports to Sheets and other softwares. And how to use general productivity and communication softwares and the corporate policies and rules of wherever I work. And I also provide software support and low level technical support and I have to know HR basics and local employment laws and management techniques and the specifics of the specialists who report to me or are on my team so I can cover them when they go on holiday. And if I am doing client work I have to do it all for multiple, often completely different, companies all with their own set of additional softwares and services I need to remember not just how to use but how to read their data output (fuck you Amazon and your completely deranged three seperate ways of recording sales and costs in one single fucking period). And then I go home and write, and draw, and leatherwork, and woodwork, and garden food crops.
So yeah, people make jokes about people reusing the same password for everything but good gods, count how many things require you to have a password and I bet you while it may not be the Odyssey, it is pretty well past Prufrock.
So yeah, give me the bloody tool to help me remember whether I need milk from the store or not. (But don't try to force me to use the thing that hallucinates penguin milk)

Newcrest Fresh Start - Weeks 15 and 16

We are back to check in on Grace Anansi; Newcrest's resident spell caster and Magic and Crystal Shop proprietor.
The Sims Municipal Committee acknowledges that this is after a brief administrative delay as a government mandated software update roll out caused havoc behind the scenes of the Newcrest Fresh Start Scheme. (New update briefly broke the players game).
When we last saw Grace she managed to be the first official registered new business owner in Newcrest, successfully setting up her Magic shop which will enable all occult sims in the area to use their powers and upgrade their skill tree. She also managed to start building her shop, though she currently only has enough room for a bed and bathroom facilities, leaving her wares and customers outside. With winter on its way Grace has just a week to expand the property enough to bring everything inside.

In order to help her spend more time crafting and collecting materials she starts the week by hiring some help. Julia Wright needs the extra cash to support her through her final semesters at University.
Julia is fantastic with the customers, which means Grace even has energy at the end of the day to offer some paid gemology mentoring, indulge in some hobbies and practice her spell casting skills. With cash steadily coming in Grace is able to slowly expand her building, soon creating a cosy and welcoming indoor shop floor.
Outside of work hours Grace spends a bit more time romancing Keith, who she met and hit it off with when we last met her. Grace is a romantic sim, so saving up for a double bed was a big priority.

By Winterfest Eve the magic shop is established enough for the busy flow of holiday shoppers, even if some of them get a bit too competitive over the stock.
With Julia's help the last shopping day before Winterfest goes smoothly. Grace even finds the time to craft some gifts for her fellow occult neighbours Kerri and Kristoff.
The next day grace takes a well deserved day off and drops off her gifts. Kristoff is grateful for his new moonstone ring, which will help him manage his thirst for plasma as long as he can keep it charged. Grace gets to meet Kristoff's infant twins. Whilst she is happy her new friend is enjoying fatherhood, she's not sure parenthood is for her.
The evening is spent on a romantic snowy walk with Keith, and the pair decide to make their relationship official!

Just as things were going incredibly well for Grace, life deals a devastating blow. Not two days after making Keith her official boyfriend, Grace receives an early morning to call to let her know he tragically passed away.
This is a bit of an emotional roller coaster for Grace. She I incredibly sad but as a non-committal sim with a single and loving it relationship she can't help feel a little relieved to not be tied down, even if it the circumstances are tragic. This makes her feel guilty, and all the conflicting emotions leave her incredibly tense and unable to do anything.
Some kind words from her new friend and future neighbour Yuki Behr help relieve the tension, but the sadness still lingers and begins to affect her work. She finds herself botching a piece of jewellery and unable to charm the customers. Even the new spell she's learnt, Delicioso, fails her, producing nothing but a sad spoiled hot dog.

The week ends with a full blown blizzard. Grace figures there's no point opening and risking the health and safety of her staff and customers. She takes the time to catch up on crafting and offers a private mentoring session to any sims who braved the journey to shop.
It's enough to finish the exterior walls of her shop/home and start making the second floor habitable for her living space. There's lots to do before she has the magical shop and apartment of her dreams, but we leave her with the feeling that things are starting to take shape. It's now time to check in again with the Green family, and their community farm.

I have been job searching for about a year. I have almost 15yrs of customer service experience. Over 10yrs of management & supervisory experience. Some of the best references in the world. & a jill-of-all-trades & continue to add to my repertoire. I've never gone to college, have gone to trade school & have my GED.
During interviews & call backs I have been told:
"You have too much experience. You're overqualified. But we could justify hiring you if you had a degree."
So essentially, I am too aware to be taken advantage of. But if I were thousands of dollar in debt & had a shmancy piece of paper - it's suddenly fine to treat me less than in exchange for a paycheck.
Here are other observations during my job hunt:
Most places are short-staffed & it's not due to a lack of employees. People have realized their worth & it's hard to find people who haven't. They also don't want to pay multiple people - when they can find a singular person to do all of it.
Positions that don't require a degree & never really did, suddenly having those degrees is being enforced. & not only that, having certifications to reinforce those degrees is becoming prevalent (looking at you SHRM).
Licenses that employers paid for - you are now responsible for. If you can't afford the hundreds & even thousands of dollars for them. Maybe we can just garnish it from your paycheck?
How it used to be difficult to find a full time job? Now it's difficult to find part time. They want you to work 10-14hr shifts (even in retail stores & offices). It's even more mandatory that you work weekends & holidays. & if not consistent weekends, you have floating weekends.
Well known companies offering work from home (remote) & hybrid - you have to use your own devices. Because they won't provide you with devices. Then you have to download their system software. Which they can use to spy on you even on your off time because it's on your personal devices.
Positions that don't require & never required a driver's license - now do. So disabled people like me can't do a job we're capable of doing because we don't meet a legit requirement. I honestly believe it's so the manager can use you like a personal assistant on top of your regular job.
Most insurance companies (like Colonial Life) are now full fledged pyramid schemes. I went to a group hiring event & every five seconds was smacked with a red flag.

What does it mean to be a freelancer?
A freelancer is someone who isn’t a part of a company so they don’t earn money like someone employed under a business, they earn money on a per job basis so they only make an earning from short term contracts that they go out to try and find for themselves. The jobs that freelancers get are often short and temporary so they’ll often try to have multiple jobs at once.
What are the key skills required of a freelancer?
Communication is a key skill for freelancing as it is what will help you get in touch with clients and it will help when either you or the client want to share how you think the project could be improved.
Industry knowledge is important for freelancers as they are often working independently and will have little guidance so some industry knowledge could grant the confidence needed to seek out jobs and be able to present yourself in a way to get said jobs.
Being able to market yourself is a key skill as making a strong brand for yourself will draw clients to you and if you can clearly communicate what you’re capable of, clients will appreciate that. Knowledge of social media can help you learn what will bring the most attention towards you and your work as well as benign enticing to companies that seek to improve their social media.
Being able to negotiate is key to a freelancer as it ensures that you and your client can come to an understanding on what expectations there should be on timing, workload, compensation and any other stipulations that could come up.
Project management is vital as freelancers typically would work on multiple projects at once so they’ll need to be able to stay organised, stay proactive and goal oriented so that they could stay on top of when each project is due and how to prioritise them.
What are the benefits and drawbacks of freelancing?
As a freelancer you have the ability to choose your own hours so if you have any other commitments that you need to take care of then you are free to work around them. You can choose where to work from as a freelancer so if you choose to work from home that means money and time that would’ve been spent on a commute can be spent elsewhere.
Unlike in a job that’s attached to a company you get to decide what your own income is, an artist can decide what prices they set their commissions at and how many they want to take on and how often they want to take them on and should they need a sudden influx of money they could sell off designs they have laying about to others.
As a freelancer you aren’t forced to work with any annoying coworkers because you get to choose who you work with, of course there will be some difficult clients here and there but you’ll find yourself naturally working with/for people you get along with. A freelancer gets to decide what projects they work on so if they don’t like the look of one they can just avoid it and just look for projects they feel passionate about instead.
A freelancer doesn’t receive the benefits that a person working under a company would such as health insurance or paid holiday which means in an emergency freelancers need to have money saved away just in case. Since freelance jobs are short and temporary freelancers have to be always on a job hunt or they could be left without an income for a period of time.
As income is on a per job basis freelancers can have a very irregular income and that may become an issue for them when dealing with regular expenses like rent or software subscriptions that they would then use to make their income. The irregularity of a freelancer's income can’t be helped especially when dealing with slow to pay clients that freelancers then need to chase up after completing a job for them.
When someone becomes a freelancer they also become responsible for everything to do with their work and since there isn’t anyone above them, they have far less pressure on them to get work done which may then lead to slacking off and rush jobs which then gives them a terrible reputation with their client which could spread to other potential clients, hurting at their chances of further work. A freelancer is responsible for seeking out their own jobs and it can be quite competitive to find work so someone like an artist may decide to lower their own commission rates in an effort to get work severely undervaluing themself in the process.
