HDMS001. I Can’t Believe I’m Taking a Harvard Course—But Here’s Why I’m Doing It as a Comedian
✨ aka: how a Brazilian-born creative with AuDHD ended up in a Harvard Business School course and why I’m documenting it ✨
So, I did this thing I never thought I would do: I signed up for a Harvard course. This isn’t just a blog post—it’s a deep-dive into what happens when a creative girly with AuDHD and a lifelong fear of spreadsheets suddenly finds herself in business school.
I never thought I’d end up here. Not as a Brazilian kid who grew up thinking Harvard was a fantasy. Not as an artist who has only ever studied comedy, media, and storytelling. And definitely not as someone who has spent years trying to figure out how to make creativity pay the bills without selling my soul.
But here I am. And let me tell you: Harvard is not for the weak.
Not everyone who pays for this course walks away with a certificate. If you don’t complete all the modules on time, you fail. And these modules? They are THICK. Harvard estimates each one will take 10 hours, but I’ve already spent 35 hours on the first one alone.
Instead of beating myself up for being “slow,” I’m treating this course like the intensive that it is. For the next six weeks, this is my full-time job. Because once it’s over, I lose access forever.
This essay is about why I’m doing this, what I’ve learned so far, and what it means to embrace the challenge of a Harvard education as a creative who never thought she’d end up here.

There are moments in life where you feel like you’re standing on the edge of two completely different worlds. For me, that moment came the day I enrolled in Harvard Business School’s Digital Marketing Strategy course.
It wasn’t just that I never thought I’d be at Harvard because of my Brazilian background—where the very idea of studying there feels like a distant, unattainable dream. It was also that I never imagined I’d be there because of my creative background.
My world has always revolved around creativity: art fundamentals, comedy writing, media production. I spent years mastering how to make people laugh, tell a good story, and create something from nothing. But when it came to business, I was completely out of my depth.
And yet, I’ve learned the hard way that if you want to turn creativity into a sustainable career, you need to think like an entrepreneur. You need to understand marketing, strategy, and how to connect your art to the people who will pay for it.
That’s why I’m here.
This essay isn’t just about the reasons I signed up for this course. It’s about what Harvard is teaching me so far—both about marketing and about myself.

I. What No One Tells You About the Business of Creativity
Growing up, I thought making a living as a creative person worked like this:
Get really good at your craft.
Be so good they can’t ignore you.
Success will follow.
And for a while, I really believed that. Because that’s what they tell you in art school, film school, comedy school—in every space where people are taught how to create but not how to sell what they create.
No one tells you that being great at what you do is only half the job.
The other half? Knowing how to market yourself.
The first time this realization hit me, I was standing in a comedy club watching two comedians back-to-back.
The first one? Hilarious. Effortlessly funny. Had the whole room in stitches. The second one? …Fine. Not bad, not great, just okay.
Guess which one was getting booked for shows all over the city?
The okay one.
And not just booked—headlining. Getting brand deals. Growing a following.
I wanted to scream. It felt unfair. But unfair or not, it wasn’t random. It was marketing.
The "okay" comedian? Knew how to package themselves. Knew how to be memorable. Knew how to make the right people notice.
And the first comedian—the one who was actually brilliant? Didn’t.
That was the day I realized something that changed my entire perspective on creativity as a career:
✨ Marketing isn’t a necessary evil. It’s the bridge between talent and opportunity. ✨
And if you don’t learn how to market yourself, you will always work for someone who did.
For years, I ignored this truth. I told myself I’d "figure it out later." But later never came, and the more I tried to build a career as a comedian, writer, and producer, the more I felt like I was missing the final piece of the puzzle.
So I started looking into business.
I started Googling things that had never even crossed my mind before:
What is branding (beyond just a logo and a nice font)?
How do you build an audience that actually sticks around?
Why do some people blow up overnight while others—just as talented, just as hardworking—barely get seen?
And the deeper I dug, the clearer it became:
Everything I needed to know was in digital marketing, business strategy, and psychology.
Things I had never studied. Things I had actively avoided because the very idea of "business" felt foreign, intimidating, and like the opposite of who I was.
But if I wanted to stop feeling lost in my own career, I had to face the thing I had been running from.
So I went straight to the source. I went to Harvard.
And if I was going to do this, I was going to do it right.

II. Digital Marketing Strategy: Course Introduction
When you think of Harvard Business School, you probably picture aspiring CEOs in tailored suits, juggling coffee cups and stock portfolios, debating billion-dollar acquisitions in a glass-walled lecture hall.
What you don’t picture? A Brazilian comedian with AuDHD trying to figure out how to sell more tickets to her shows.
And yet, here I am, sitting at my desk in mismatched pajamas, listening to Professor Sunil Gupta explain how Amazon, Google, and Facebook changed the entire landscape of marketing forever.
The course began with a question:
“How has marketing evolved in the digital era?”
Now, I’ve always thought of marketing as this thing big companies do. You know—TV ads, celebrity endorsements, billboards on the side of highways. Stuff I, as a small creative business of one, had no connection to.
But the second Professor Gupta started breaking it down, I realized:
Marketing isn’t just for big companies. Marketing is for anyone who wants to build a connection—between a product and a person, between an idea and a community.
And the way we build those connections? Has fundamentally shifted.
The Three Big Shifts in Marketing
Professor Gupta outlined the three major technological shifts that redefined marketing as we know it:
The Rise of E-Commerce (Amazon, 1994): Suddenly, shopping wasn’t limited to brick-and-mortar stores. Everything moved online. Convenience became king, and consumer behavior started to change.
The Search Engine Revolution (Google, 1998): People no longer relied on ads to tell them what they needed—they started looking for answers themselves. Search engines turned consumers into researchers.
The Social Media Explosion (Facebook, 2004): Brands weren’t just companies anymore—they were personalities. With the rise of platforms like Facebook, people started expecting authenticity and engagement.
What This Means for Marketing Today
According to Professor Gupta, modern marketing isn’t about selling. It’s about creating value at every touchpoint:
Acquiring customers (getting their attention in a crowded digital world).
Engaging customers (giving them a reason to stay).
Allocating budgets wisely (because not all marketing efforts are created equal).
Measuring effectiveness (so you know what’s actually working).
At its core, the course is about understanding:
How people connect with brands.
How to build meaningful relationships with an audience.
How to turn those relationships into sustainable growth.
When Professor Gupta said, “Marketing isn’t just a skill—it’s a mindset,” I wrote it down in all caps. Because in that moment, I realized:
I wasn’t just taking a course!!!!! I was rewiring my entire approach to creativity!!!!!

III. Takeaway From the Course Introduction
There’s something about hearing a Harvard professor say, “Marketing is a mindset” that makes you stop and reevaluate your life.
Before this course, I thought marketing was just selling. Cold. Corporate. Calculated.
But Professor Gupta framed it in a way I’d never thought about before:
✨ Marketing isn’t about pushing your work onto people. It’s about making your audience feel like your work was made for them. ✨
And suddenly, everything clicked.
The Biggest Lightbulb Moment
One of the core takeaways from the course introduction was the idea that marketing isn’t linear anymore.
Gone are the days of: 📺 TV ad → consumer sees ad → consumer buys product.
Instead, today’s marketing looks more like: 🌐 Consumer sees TikTok → Googles reviews → scrolls Instagram → reads Reddit threads → finally buys.
Professor Gupta called this the “non-linear customer journey,” and it’s reshaping how businesses (and creators) approach their audiences.
Here’s why it matters:
Consumers have more control than ever. They’re not just sitting back and absorbing ads—they’re actively researching, comparing, and deciding.
Authenticity is non-negotiable. People trust other people—friends, influencers, strangers on Reddit—far more than they trust companies.
Every touchpoint matters. From your Instagram bio to a single TikTok comment, everything contributes to how people perceive your brand.
This realization hit me hard. As a comedian, I’ve always thought of my work as the “product”—the show, the joke, the punchline.
But this module made me realize: the product is only part of the story.
The way I engage with my audience, the way I present myself online, the way I make people feel before, during, and after a show—that’s marketing too.
Three Questions I Keep Coming Back To
As I worked through the first module, I kept asking myself three questions:
What kind of connection do I want to build with my audience? Marketing isn’t just about selling tickets—it’s about building relationships. Am I making people feel like part of a community?
Am I showing up authentically? People can tell when you’re faking it. They want to connect with real people, not a polished, corporate version of you.
What does my audience need to see to trust me? Trust is earned. If I want people to invest their time and money in my work, I need to show them why it’s worth it—through every interaction.
A Shift in Perspective
The biggest takeaway from the course introduction wasn’t just about marketing. It was about seeing creativity through a new lens.
Marketing isn’t a dirty word. It’s not selling out. It’s the way you make your work find its people.
And as someone who has always been terrified of anything business-related, that perspective shift felt like a lifeline.

IV. How This Lesson Applies to Me, As a Creative Girlypop
I used to think of marketing as something other people did. Business people. Tech bros. Corporate types who wore suits and said things like “circle back” unironically.
I never thought of marketing as something that applied to me—a comedian, a writer, a performer.
But here’s the truth: if you don’t market yourself, no one will!!!!!!
The first module of this course made me confront something I had been avoiding for years: the gap between making art and making a living!!!!!!!
I’ve spent my entire creative career focused on the work. Writing better jokes. Producing better shows. Designing better visuals.
But the success of my career doesn’t just depend on how good my work is. It depends on whether people can find me, connect with me, and remember me.
And that’s marketing.
How the Harvard Framework Changes the Way I See My Career
Professor Gupta broke marketing down into three core stages:
1️⃣ Acquisition → How people discover you. 2️⃣ Engagement → How people connect with you. 3️⃣ Retention → How people stick around.
And when I looked at my own career through that lens, I realized I was only focused on one piece of the puzzle.
I’ve been so focused on making great work (engagement) that I haven’t spent enough time figuring out how to get new eyes on me (acquisition) or how to keep those eyes on me long-term (retention).
And that’s a problem.
Because being good at what you do isn’t enough if no one knows you exist or remembers you after they’ve found you.
Where I’ve Been Getting It Wrong
🔥 Marketing isn’t just promotion. It’s not just posting a show flyer and saying, “Hey, come see me.” It’s creating an experience that draws people in before they even realize they want to buy a ticket.
🔥 Branding isn’t just aesthetics. It’s not just a logo or a color palette. It’s how people feel when they see your name. What do I stand for? What’s the immediate association people have with my work? If I don’t define it, someone else will.
🔥 Community isn’t automatic. Just because someone follows me doesn’t mean they’ll stay. What am I doing to make people feel like they’re part of something?
This course is making me ask hard questions about my career—questions that don’t have easy answers but are necessary if I actually want to grow.
Because the reality is: no matter how good I am at what I do, I can’t just sit around and hope to be discovered. I have to make sure people can find me, trust me, and stay with me.
And that’s why this course is already changing everything.

V. How I Can Make This Work, As an AuDHD Girl
Here’s the thing about taking a Harvard-level business course when you have AuDHD: it feels like running a marathon while your brain insists on stopping to inspect every interesting rock along the way.
Harvard estimates each module should take 10 hours. I took 35.
Because while the neurotypicals were probably reading the material, absorbing the key points, and moving on with their lives, I was:
Pausing every 30 seconds to Google something I didn’t understand.
Rereading sentences five times because my brain refused to process them in order.
Falling into a rabbit hole about the history of Amazon’s business model when I was supposed to be learning about customer acquisition.
Getting up to make coffee, deciding to deep-clean my kitchen instead, and returning two hours later wondering what year it was.
And yet, despite all this, I love this course.
Because for the first time, I feel like I’m finally learning the missing piece of my creative career.
But if I want to actually finish this course—and not just hyperfixate on parts of it while burning myself out—I need a plan.
Rewiring My Approach to Learning
I’ve spent my whole life trying to force myself into a neurotypical study routine. Taking notes the "right way." Sitting still for hours. Pushing through fatigue instead of listening to my brain.
Spoiler: It never worked.
So this time, I’m working with my brain instead of against it.
🔥 I’m treating this course like a full-time job.
It’s only six weeks. I can’t afford to "get to it when I get to it."
I’m setting work hours where my only job is to absorb as much as I can.
🔥 I’m making my own syllabus.
Harvard’s structure is great, but I need bite-sized wins to stay motivated.
Breaking modules into smaller, daily goals will help prevent burnout.
🔥 I’m building movement into my study sessions.
Sitting still = brain fog. So I’m adding walking, pacing, stretching, and maybe even aggressively dancing between lessons.
If I need to listen instead of read, I will. No shame in switching up the format.
🔥 I’m using external accountability.
This blog? Part of my accountability system. If I tell you I’m finishing this course, I have to actually do it.
I might even set up a public progress tracker to keep myself on schedule.
What I’m Learning About My Brain in the Process
Every time I try to follow a system that wasn’t built for me, I fail. And every time I build a system that works with my brain, I thrive.
I’ve spent years assuming I was just bad at focus, bad at consistency, bad at business.
I’m realizing now: I’m not bad at any of these things. I just needed to do them differently.
This course is hard as hell. It’s also one of the most valuable things I’ve ever invested in.
And if I can actually pull this off—learn marketing, finish the course, and apply it to my career—then I’ll be walking away with more than just a certificate!!! I’ll be walking away with a new way of approaching my own creative success!!!! Isn't that exciting????

The old ways of selling are dead. People don’t just watch ads anymore; they research, engage, and trust other people’s opinions first.

Marketing isn’t about being pushy—it’s about creating value and making your audience feel like your work was made for them.
