hey I'm starting dice casting in resin as a quarantine activity! anything you think I should know? (I have researched a decent amount about what to do or not do but I feel like it'd be better to get the opinion of someone who knows things!) thanks for your time! I love your blog btw

Oh my gosh, thank you! Wow... okay where to start... (Just a heads up to anyone reading, this is going to be a long and probably rambling post)

There's definitely a large learning curve for dice making, so like you said it's really good to do your research! Experimentation is important, but I'll try to share as much as I can to help!

There are a few important stages that help improve the quality of your dice, and the quality bumps up a bit each time you go up a stage. Each stage would cost a fair bit to bump up, but it does show an improvement and most importantly, each one reduces the amount of time and effort you have to put into completely finishing a set of dice. If you ever get discouraged, remember that failure is part of learning, and of course your results will get better with experience! I'll include some pics of my first dice versus my most recent ones for comparison.

The first tests I ever tried with making dice, I had barely a clue as to what to try. The first molds I ever made were made with a small, extremely expensive Hobby Lobby silicone mold kit, and a small bottle of Alumilite casting resin.

At the time, I knew from watching King of Random videos that the best thing to use to remove the bubbles from silicone (improving the quality of your molds and final product DRAMATICALLY) was to use a vacuum chamber to "degass" the silicone as much as possible. At the time I couldn't afford one, so my old molds often had tiny bubbles that would leave small, stippled pieces of resin all over the surface of my dice. So, how do we get around all of this?

Well, one way would be to buy a vacuum chamber, but I recently found a better way to make sure there are no bubbles! But, I'll talk a bit more about this later.

(Side Note: I do not support Hobby Lobby or their policies in the slightest, but at the time it was the only place in my town that offered silicone or resin, and it still is. I now buy almost all of my supplies online, and buy direct from the manufacturer if they have a website to avoid using Amazon.)

So first off, what kind of resin should you use?

This is normally just determined by personal preference, but I really enjoy using Art n Glow casting resin for all of my dice. You measure the two parts in a 1:1 ratio by volume, and it hardens pretty well as long as you mix it for 3-4 minutes before adding any pigments or dyes. I'll add a link to their website here, but keep in mind they also sell a lot of interesting pigment options besides just resin.

So what about silicone?

So after my first unfortunate mishaps with my old Hobby Lobby silicone, I decided to do some digging and see what would actually work the best. After watching a lot of Rybonator's videos on youtube about making molds, I went with Smooth-On brand Mold Star Slow 15 silicone for my first serious molds. This specific silicone is a two-part, green platinum cure silicone, which basically means it will last a lot longer than something like a tin cured silicone. (I would add a link for where to buy it, but there is another silicone that I like much better that I'll talk about in a moment.)

This worked pretty well for me, but there is a major downside. When you use an opaque silicone, you can't see the resin as you fill up your molds. This works for a LOT of applications, but if you're interested in doing layered, swirled, or pride themed dice, I would instead go with Smooth-On Sorta-Clear 37 silicone (link included). One trial kit is more than enough for one full set of dice molds, with a bit extra left over for other projects. Not only do the clear molds leave you open to being able to make layered or pride dice, but the silicone itself is a bit firmer than Slow 15, which makes it easier to secure the mold together before you pour resin into it, and the mold is a bit more durable overall.

But how do we deal with all of the pesky bubbles in the silicone and resin?

Well, I'm glad you asked. So, normally a vacuum chamber would be used to remove the bubbles from the silicone, and then you would use a pressure pot after you fill them with resin to basically crush down any bubbles that are suspended in your resin while it hardens and cures. When I wasn't unemployed and had a decently steady stream of income, I went out of my way to track down a decent vacuum chamber and a vacuum pump (which I had to buy separately). However, with a bit of experimentation, I found that you don't really need a vacuum chamber at all! Instead of buying both pieces, which would (if you're lucky) would cost around ~$75 for the vacuum chamber and pump, and $100 for the pressure pot, just using a pressure pot in place of a vacuum chamber will save on both time and a TON of money.

Using a pressure pot is one of the main stages that helps improve the quality and time spent sanding dramatically, and both Rybonator and Peter Brown have great videos on setting up your pressure pot. Harbor Freight sells a great model that has a massive capacity and is absolutely perfect for dice making! The technique for using a pressure pot for curing silicone is rather simple, just pour your silicone into your molds and place into the pressure pot, then let them cure for the length of time given on the packaging instructions.

In terms of actually preparing dice for molds, I would follow this guide from Rybonator, which is pretty much what I've followed in making mine. My molds are slightly different, but it's just trial and error to see what works for you!

Hey, so how do you pigment your dice?

Pretty much any way you want! There are lots of different ways to color and tinted resin, and nearly infinite things you can inset into them!

A few of the things I use are the cheap $0.50 bottles of acrylic paint you can buy at Walmart or any hobby store, alcohol based inks, liquid glitter, glow powder from Art n Glow, mica powders, pearl powder, cocoa powder, gold leaf, so pretty much anything! Peter Brown has an amazing video series where he takes household items and tests how well they work as resin dyes (link), and it serves as a pretty good source of inspiration for what to use!

Oh lord, am I going to have to sand these?

IMPORTANT NOTE: ALWAYS WEAR A RESPIRATOR OR FACE MASK, EYE PROTECTION, AND GLOVES WHEN WORKING WITH RESIN! (Yes, always!)

Unfortunately, sanding your dice can be one of the most tedious parts of this hobby, but each of the stages I've mentioned such as using a pressure pot or even getting your own dice masters can really cut down on the amount of time that you have to spend sanding and polishing. Personally, I use a mix of different wet sanding grits (normally the grits I use are 300, 600, 800, 1200, and 2000), and once I'm happy with the surface finish I move on to something called Zona papers (link), which work amazingly well compared to things like micro mesh pads that I've used in the past. I normally sand each face, including when polishing them, for about a minute or so on each face in a figure-8 motion, making sure that there is plenty of water to keep both dust from clogging the sand paper, as well as to reduce the amount you are breathing in. Buying master dice, such as those from Blue Mimic, can really reduce the amount of time you have to sand, but most hobby dice makers may not go so far as they can cost over hundreds of dollars, but are necessary if you ever plan on selling them or starting a business with them.

That's about most of the advice I have when it comes to making dice, but if anyone has any questions please don't hesitate to ask!! If I think of anything else I'll add a reblog onto this with any extra info. Remember, any failures you make are absolutely part of the process, and make sure you keep them to remember how far you've come!

Yes, i mostly dress like a hippie (cuz i am one) or I’m constantly in a band shirt and docs. I hate calling this a style, because it is a music first and foremost, but i have been called “grungy” because i am, in fact, that. Beautiful Homes of Instagram: Painted Brick Exterior

  Hi, everyone! How are you today? I had such a wonderful weekend. I baked with my husband and even attempted to make some cheese… but don’t ask about that! LOL. Anyway, I am super happy and excited because the weather is finally changing and the sun is shinning. I am also so very happy because I adore Callie of ceshome6 and her style so much that this is the second time I have her on my “Beautiful Homes of Instagram” series. The first time, I shared her formal home (you can see it here) and it became one of my most-pinned posts! Today, I am proud to be sharing Callie’s new home and I am sure you will enjoy seeing and knowing all details as much as I did!

  “My husband and I were originally from a small town in North Texas near Oklahoma. We have known each other since kindergarten but didn’t start dating until our junior year of high school. After graduation we moved to the Dallas area for college and have stayed close ever since. We will have been married for 15 years this July and have 4 beautiful children; a 17 year old daughter, a 14 year old daughter, a 9 year old son, and a 5 year old daughter. I feel very blessed to be able to stay at home with them and take care of our family and home.

We had planned to build a home again but during our search I found this spec home and the moment I walked in I loved it. It was my style with the color selections and it was the perfect size for our family. Another bonus was that it was already complete and ready to move in. We went for it and two months later we moved into our new home.

My favorite part of the home is the long open kitchen, dining and living space in one and we spend the most time gathered in this area as a family. I’ve always loved to decorate my homes to really feel cozy and welcoming. I don’t have one specific design style but like to incorporate in different pieces I like. My home is a mix of modern, rustic, farmhouse and french country. I also try to be minimal in my decor because with having 4 kids I don’t want to have to worry so much about moving things all the time or things getting broken.”

What first caught my eye about this home was definitely the white exterior. There’s something about a white home! I was sold before I even walked in. The 2 porches in the front were also a huge selling point because we love to sit outside and watch the kids play. We have a huge open space in the front of our home that’s almost the size of a football field and perfect for football, baseball or soccer.

The exterior brick paint color is PPG Atrium White and shutters are PPG Black Forest.

This is Jinger – pronounced Ginger… we had to change it to a “J” so she would have the same as the other kids!! I got her own couch for her to go in the living room because she’s been scratching up our leather couch with her nails and she loves it!! Target has the cutest doggie beds! I loved this buffalo plaid one and it goes so well with all my other decor!

Magnolia Inspiration

I decided I wanted a black a white theme when I saw a photo from Magnolia Home that had beautiful black wood arched frames behind the nightstands. I like to save money when possible so I found my own version from Kirkland’s (similar here) and spray painted them black to get the same look for over half the cost.

Bed & Bedding

The bed set is from the Magnolia Home line at Nebraska Furniture Mart. The bedding and lamps are from Target.

Decor

There’s a small corner in the room that was bare so I found this cute macrame wall hanging (similar here) and an olive plant at Homegoods. It’s very simple but I love it.

Study

The study is in the front of the home off to the side when you come in the front door. I recently completed a makeover in my study by adding Weaber Lumber white washed wall boards from Home Depot to a focal wall and I love how the transformation turned out. It makes the room so bright and open. I also added greenery with these hanging macrame plant hangers from amazon. I decided to save some money by painting a few terra cotta pots from Hobby Lobby to match my decor and filled them with IKEA plants.

To really make the room pop I changed out the lighting to a beautiful wood bead chandelier from World Market. I found this desk at Restoration Hardware a few years ago and both the chair and rug are from Nebraska Furniture Mart.

I first saw Turin last summer & thought it was a neat looking yarn. I proceeded to pick it up, feel it, examine it… then I saw the price tag.. eeekk 19.99. I carefully put it back on its shelf, as at that time I couldn’t see spending 20.00 on yarn I had no clue what I was gonna do with it. I found myself in-front of the display staring at this yarn every time I made a trip to Hobby Lobby. Then, I say around Thanksgiving.. The Yarn Gods granted me my wish. It was ON SALE 🙂 It was buy 1 get 50% second, plus their usually 40% off a item coupon. I did the calculations and to my delight I came home with 2 skeins of Turin 🙂

I decided on making floor mats with this yarn. It seemed sturdy enough along with being a pleasant feel on bare feet. Excited to get started I jump in full force. I was pleased to know that 1 skein makes a decent sized mat.

The rectangular mat measures Approx 26 X 19 inches… The round is approx 26 inches round. They are great for smaller areas. Ofcourse if you are wanting a larger mat you will need more than one skein. The skeins themselves do not look like that have alot of yarn to them… reason I had purchased 2 but while making the first mat, the yarn just kept spitting outta the skein.. Like I said pleasantly surprised.

The Technical Stoof…

Turin comes in a few different color schemes. There is 6 total. The yarn I choose was Granite

Net WT.. 17.6oz .. 270yds

75% Acrylic, 15% Nylon, 10% Wool … Hand wash cool water.. lay flat to dry

Recommended 10mm Hook/ Needle

The Good, Bad and Ugly…

This yarn is on the soft side. Colors are very nice and transition well. Did not run into any tied together “ends” in either skein I used, they were one continuous strand.

The outer fiber is spun onto a decent sized foundation strand. The outer fiber appears to be tightly woven but working with it you can feel it “slide” slightly on the foundation strand.

When working with this yarn.. I recommend knowing exactly what your going to do with it and/or have a pattern ready for it. Frogging this yarn was a living nightmare. It catches on itself and you must undo each stitch individually 😦  Hiding ends is also on the frustrating side as the outer layer of the yarn slides and bunches up on you as your weaving the end in. I found wetting and twisting the outer layer of the yarn slightly before weaving helped alittle.

Anything that requires pulling the yarn threw stitches, like hiding ends, making a magic circle( yeah does not work at all), etc, bunches up the yarn.

When all is said and done… I don’t hate this yarn, it was abit of a challenge and great learning experience. However, Im not sure I would say I love this yarn either. It got me out of my comfort zone which is great but truthfully, Id rather not deal with the hassel it creates…  If I need to replace or need more floor mats, I would buy this yarn, just for that reason but its not one that would be kept in stock on my favorites stash shelf.

Round Floor Mat Pattern

This pattern is done in the round, continuous rows. It is not your basic circle, as with changing of types of stitches used it requires a little tweaking.

The Border used with this pattern is the Crab Stitch (reverse single crochet)

The crab stitch gives a sturdy edge to this rug as to prevent fraying from use.

SC = Single Crochet

DC = Double Crochet

HDC = Half Double Crochet

Purging Distraction for the Good of Society

I stopped eating pizza (or anything else) from Domino's decades ago because I found out the company funded Operation Rescue, a notorious anti-abortion organization.

I wasn't ever a big Chick Filet customer but their open anti-homosexual stance keeps me away.

Hobby Lobby? Same shit, different day.

I'm not a big boycotter on any level beyond individual but when I see a company that openly does not align with my personal values, I pull out. Not looking for cheers and a parade. No pats on the back. No virtue to signal here.

Let's face it. Zuckerberg started Facebook as a skeevy fucker who wanted to punish women who wouldn't give him the time of day by providing other skeevy fuckers the opportunity to rate the women online. That's the foundation of this thing that has ballooned to three billion users and serves no pragmatic purpose but to sell shit to us.

In 1964, Marshall McLuhan famously wrote, "The medium is the message." His point was that the way in which we receive information is often just as influential, if not more, than the content of the information itself.

MIT Technology Review received an internal Facebook report from 2019 and learned that Eastern European troll farm "content was reaching 140 million US users per month—75 percent of whom had never followed any of the pages."

Facebook prematurely turned off safeguards designed to thwart misinformation and rabble rousing after Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump in last year’s elections in a moneymaking move that a company whistleblower alleges contributed to the deadly Jan. 6 invasion of the U.S. Capitol.

I came back six months ago, mostly to prove to myself that I could. Limited it to 100 'friends.' Kept it under control. Sort of like eating a Domino's pizza once a month and feeling fine about it.

This week, David and I decided in light of the latest round of reporting that this platform was not in line with our values (as if it ever had been). So no more Faceborg for Literate Ape. No more LiterateApestagram. I nuked mine again for good measure.

New Evidence Suggests Cryptopia Hack Was ‘Inside Job’

Vcdragon, a former developer and co-founder of Cryptopia exchange, has released new evidence detailing exactly how Intranel intentionally destroyed the exchange.

Co-Founder Spills the Beans

On July 18 a twitter user @notsofast, tweeted a link to an article which claims to provide “the complete story of the fraudulent hostile takeover of Cryptopia_NZ by Intranel from its founders Adam and Rob”

According to @notsofast’s post, “Intranel inside-job hacked Cryptopia.”

According to vcdragon, the author of the steemit post, he and Cryptopia co-founder (Adam) began building Cryptopia as a hobby project around January 2014. As the project took form, Adam eventually resigned from his developer position at Intranel.

vcdragon explained that Intranel did not want to lose Adam as an employee and offered the duo a room to rent in their company office. Intranel’s interest continued to grow as the crypto market and exchange took off.

At the start of 2017, Adam and vcdragon felt that they could benefit from the business development support Intranel could provide. vcdragon explained that: 

Intranel made us an offer that for 20% of the company they would handle all of the business management and development things like helping with hiring and managing staff, paying tax, lobbying for regulator guidance and all the ‘boring’ business stuff.

The firm also offered to contract 4 of their staff to the developers at a discounted rate and also provide assistance with finding top talent for Cryptopia. It was at this point that the story takes a turn for the worse. According to the lengthy and detailed post, Intranel hired staff for themselves and contracted these newly acquired employees to the Cryptopia founders at “exorbitant rates”. New staff were given unwarranted managerial latitude and once Cryptopia was reliant on new staff, Intranel demanded an extra 5% equity in the exchange. 

Intranel “Bled Cryptopia Dry”

Eventually, Adam resigned from the pressure and vcdragon followed Intranel’s advice to take a holiday in order to avoid burnout. vcdragon claims he was not paid during his 1 month holiday and found that his workspace had been filled upon returning to Intranel.

Vcdragon also said Intranel issued a dividend to everyone except Adam and himself, and explained that Intranel “forced the extra 5% as they needed the extra shares to block any major transaction the company tried to undertake so that we could not achieve a 75% threshold.” 

The former developer alleges that Intranel bled Cryptopia dry while also methodically absorbing the company into its ownership. Intranel supposedly issued themselves a loan for $300,000 to cover “startup costs” and they repeatedly took on clients using Cryptopia’s name, then billed the company for the work. 

They bled money everywhere they could, we paid for tax on their staff’s flu shots? We paid taxes on Christmas fits to their staff and our company bought the gifts. Everything they were unable to take for themselves they pissed into the wind on needless expenses and luxuries to the company could not afford….that ultimately buried us. 

Apparently, Intranel attempted to sell the company right “out from underneath” the co-founders on 3 separate occasions. By the time Intranel was forcibly separated from Cryptopia, the company was nearly bankrupt. 

The Saga Continues

Vcdragon ends his article by concluding that he believes the hack was intentionally deployed to cover all of the idiotic business practices. Their plan to completely absorb and wreck Cryptopia was interrupted after they were “forcibly removed from the company”. Vcdragon fears that the saga is not yet complete as Intranel are currently partnered with ANZ, a bank that previously refused to provide Cryptopia with banking services, and PWC, a firm which is tasked with providing legal counsel to Cryptopia.

So there’s this thing in the SCA that is #100DaysOfA&S and I’m insane to think I can even remember to do something everyday for 100 days...but I’m going to throw myself into this.  Why? Because something happened as I wandered around Hobby Lobby today after work...Aside from pissing off the liberals...I finally realized I’m ready to create again. I’ve been making things, yes. But I haven’t been creating things. I’ve been doing things for everyone else - because I’ve been voluntold to do them for so long that I have no other choice but to do them, and feel obligated to do so much. Even the site token thing is voluntold. The other “volunteers,” for 300 bracelets and 4500 charms were asking if starting the 15th of October would be okay...No. I have them done - except for 300. They’re all done.  Then I got informed we need 28-50 (nice range huh?) teacher tokens, and 15-20 staff tokens and 75 feast tokens. I’m doing the 15-20 staff tokens, and 75 feast tokens. the Chancellor of the event is in charge of the large range of teacher tokens. I just don’t have the want/time/money to do so. I’m donating the 15-20 staff tokens out of my supplies. Because I want to. But other than that I’ve not done ANYTHING just for me, art wise, in the 7+ years I’ve been in Indiana. The wander through HL reminded me how much I love art. I have a portfolio at the end of the bed of my artwork from high school and early college years. I need to get a lot of it reframed. But mostly, I want to create. I want to sit at my desk, in my room, my haven and I want to make art. I want to start sewing again. I want to create the pieces for myself that contain Biggie’s ashes, fur, and whiskers. I want to make trades and do commissions and have fun with my art again. I no longer feel like I have to justify the desire to create to anyone, like why I’m skipping doing one chore tonight to load a new kumi disk or why I’ve finished my set “chore” list and want to watch netflix and work on a tiny seed bead needle case or any of the other tons of projects I WANT to do. I finally have time - every night actually, I can get done with work, get errands done, get home, do the chore or two I need to do and then I have 3-5 hours I can craft and I can art...and then I can sleep. And not be guilted into feeling like I should apologize for taking a night off from scooping all the cat boxes or vacuuming the entire house - while he played video games ALL DAY - so I could unwind with some art or a craft. And it’s just really awesome that I have people who want to encourage me to do the 100 days of A&S...and to post photos of my daily work.  So I’m sort of manic tonight on the “I want to make all the things!” And it’s apparently obnoxious that I have energy this late at night. So I’ll post current work in daily photos (or try to).
