…not to bash ocasio-cortez for revealing her sephardic roots at all (and it is very common in the caribbean for people to have some jewish heritage!), but her being like "surprise it's hanukkah, this is about me now!" is very 😒 and her being like "I knew it! I sensed it!" feels SUPER akin to how white people react to 23andme telling them they're like 0.43% Exotic somewhere (indigenous, greek, whatever)

I mean, partly I'm also feeling sorta sitcom stare into a camera in "over it" body language bc my life is a punchline & 2 years ago my family found out we got a Whole ashkenazi grandfather (my dad got a Whole white dad?!) and uhhhhh it's cool & all but it's not a cute legacy to inherit as a party trick to pull out when I wanna make an Appearance at a holiday party, esp for a religion I'm not actually… in, yk?

and I've had those friends who like get weirdly performative over insisting they're something they're not but like… you actually are ("I'm sooooo native!" or "I'm sooooooo latina!" sandy cheeks no you ain't.png), which is already inherently & deeply annoying & tbh offensive

but for sth ocasio-cortez says she only recently discovered about her family (and obviously: same) to sort of thrust herself even further into the spotlight when she's already there on her own merits does come across as both elizabeth warren dna test corny bullshit & as childish attention seeking behavior bc there's also no consideration for the people whose public hanukkah celebration & whose synagogue you have sort of turned into supporting acts in your own staged play… I'm not saying you can't have a spiritual moment with your newfound knowledge about your roots, but the posturing rather than some humility or respect for privacy about it feels, like, very… young & sort of silly.

and it's all the more awkward bc the princessnijireiki show already aired this holiday special & I literally didn't tell anyone I knew in person outside my family for months… I waited a while before putting shit online, even as someone who's a regular ass anonymous person on the internet vs an elected official, because I was still processing that information… the idea of showboating it is still unthinkable to me, because I take my family & histories of genocide & current racism & people's faiths in general too seriously for that.

I think she thought she was doing something by saying all that stuff on twitter, but she didn't have the impact I think she anticipated, and it feels like a very clumsy navigation of being in the public eye that reminds me of kids I knew in middle school trying too hard to be special by claiming bloodright to something they're not, based on rumors about a lone ancestor from at least 500 years ago. that's just how I feel. it seems immature.
