Last December, I had the opportunity to visit Isayama-sensei’s hometown of Hita, a beautiful town nestled between lush mountains. And although I went there for AOT related reasons, the breathtaking views and atmospheric landscapes alone are deserving of a visit imo, even for those who are not fans of the manga.

The town is overflowing with AOT energy, and I can’t describe it any other way haha There are aot flags as well as Isayama-sensei’s signature (chibi Mikasa doodle kkkk) all over the city, green survey corps banners pointing to aot related locations in every corner, and they have this stamp rally where you can scan a QR code to get a stamp. The codes are scattered all around the city (in cafes, shops selling local handicrafts, markets, restaurants, etc) encouraging visitors to browse the shops and inevitably support the local economy in the process, which I thought was very cool.

It was pretty clear from the get go that Hita is very proud of Isayama-sensei and his work. I went there with a friend and her mom, who are from the nearby city of Fukuoka, and although they already knew about aot, since it is obviously very popular in Japan, they had never really read the manga or watched the anime. However, Isayama-sensei left such a lasting, positive impression on them that, as soon as we got back to Fukuoka, my friend started watching the anime and her mom bought all the volumes of the manga to read them over the New Year Holiday. They told me that he seemed like such a genuinely nice person and that seeing how well-liked he is in his community made them want to support his work as well, which is really 🥹

We had lunch at a Yakisoba restaurant near one of the AOT museums. My friend told me that Isayama-sensei used to work part time in this restaurant back in the day. And inside, we found these doodles he drew of Levi and Sasha😂

Kegiatan ini merupakan sarana untuk merumuskan rencana aksi dan solusi dalam mewujudkan Kota Denpasar sebagai Smart City berbasis budaya. Wawali Arya Wibawa saat membacakan sambutan Wali Kota Denpasar menjelaskan, kegiatan FGD Smart City ini sejalan dengan visi Kota Denpasar, yakni Kota Kreatif Berbasis Budaya Menuju Denpasar Maju. Dalam implentasi Smart City di Kota Denpasar, secara spesifik didukung oleh misi ketiga dan keempat. "Ada poin-poin dalam misi Kota Denpasar, yakni kejujuran dan spirit Sewaka Darma sebagai penguat reformasi dan birokrasi menuju tata kelola kepemerintahan yang baik (Good Governance). My dear Luis, I wanted to put down in writing the impression made on me by Viridiana, firstly, because words spoken with the all the emotion and enthusiasm of mutual friendship always sound so banal, and secondly because it pains me to think that the grim routine that stifles so much in life might also swallow up, along with so many other treasures, this opportunity to tell you what your film means to me.

The first thing that surprised me about Viridiana was the story itself. Until now, I had always been bothered by a certain awkwardness and artificiality in film narratives, the way ‘what happens’ comes up against the limitations of this medium that are so much more evident than those of other art forms. There was always a kind of orthopaedic adjustment of the story to the rigid mould of a system of expression of dubious efficacy. Then suddenly, last night, I witnessed the miracle of ‘knowing’, participating in facts, feelings, settings and symbols that could only have been transmitted to me in this unique form, and with the same endlessly vital efficiency of a Goya, or of the episode with the lions in Don Quijote, of Sanseverina’s love. For the first time, cinema has managed fully to communicate to me a whole world, specific, ever-lasting and created with that duende some still call genius.

How odd – and how appropriate! – that the first film to provide all this for me should be a Spanish film, and Spanish in its very essence, rather than in dubious local colour or heroic anecdotes; Spanish like the Archpriest of Hita, like Quevedo, like Larra, like Goya, again, and also like Saint Teresa or Saint Ignatious. In short, I have seen the rebirth of a voice that was lost twenty years ago to criminals, lies, sanctimoniousness, and the humiliating and bitter shadow of exile. The voice of Spain that is so vital to us now that we are reduced more each day to a senseless and circumscribed servitude.

I believe the primary virtue of Viridiana, beyond overcoming the limitations that made cinema a suspect craft, lies in being so quintessentially Spanish.

Luis, Viridiana is so important, so transcendental for the world and for Spain that the silence that might fall on it and the obstacles that might be put in the way of its exhibition, rather than discouraging us, show us that cinema, thanks to you, is beginning to see the end of that painful process all true and lasting art has to suffer before becoming a legacy for all mankind and the evidence of our passage through this world.

It is not order exactly, nor much less clarity that have helped me this time to communicate my thoughts on Viridiana to you. These lines are just a heartfelt testament of my admiration for you and your work. Only today, some of those of us who were there last night at the screening of your film were saying that knowing we are your friends and remembering that you share with us this slice of human life, is one of the few consolations left to us in this ugly age of artificial satellites and other such lamentable devices.

Mameda Machi, Hita City, Oita Prefecture by Kyushu Travel & Train Trip

“Also known as "Little Kyoto" for the city’s historic atmosphere of Japan. This old town is also an important preservation district of historic buildings. As you walk around the town, you will find its famous Hita Geta (Japanese wooden clogs), fine water, and extensive locally brewed sake!”

I’m not sure if it’s related but that big geta sandals reminds me of the one in Owaraji, Taito City of Tokyo, or specifically, Sensou-Ji Temple of Asakusa. It is said that the sandals represent the powers of Niō, the Herculean guardians of Buddhist temples, which keeps demons at bay by making them believe that the temple is home to the invincible giant.
