One of History's Greats
Queen Teuta
Tumblr media
Teuta served as the Queen Regent of the Ardiaei tribe in Illyria, reigning from 231 BC to 228/227 BCE. The Ardiaean state was the most powerful monarchy in Illyria, gaining more power and prestige as other coastal nation’s navies became too feeble to hold them back.
Queen Teuta became ruler when her husband, Agron, died. Under Agron’s rule, the Ardiaean navy had been aggressive and effective. With Teuta at the helm, ordering Generals and Aristocrats alike, the Ardiaei tribe gained more fear and strength.
Rhizon was Teuta’s centre of power, home to her palace and from where she issued the plans for the Ardiaei’s military and naval endeavours.
One of Teuta’s first orders as queen was to prepare the entire navy, made up of 100 small ships. She ordered warships to be constructed, and work on a new city-port in what is now Sucuraj, Croatia.
It was her mission to conquer Hellenic colonies east of the Adriatic, continuing the expansion her husband had started at a much faster rate.
The Ardiaean state had an uninterrupted dominion of the entire eastern Adriatic coast, making it a unified territory under one monarch.
She ordered her navy to make hit-and-run raid expeditions. They targeted coastal towns of empires who’s militaries were too far inland to defend against seabourne attacks.
Soon, Teuta’s military garnered the attention of the Roman Empire. Their raids had interrupted trade and Sicily and Magna Graecia, strong allies of Rome, had suffered greatly.
The Illyrians had been very successful, conquering, fighting and raiding. Their campaigns had been very successful until the First Illyrian War. Rome beat the Illyrian forces back, seizing a number of small towns and twenty ships.
The Romans stayed in Illyria, determined to ‘protect their gains’ and keep their hard won victory.
Teuta sent an embassy to attempt one final treaty with the Romans, asking them to all of Illyria excluding some places, and consenting to give up her military power.
Then, the Queen reportedly buried over 2500 kg of gold on Devil’s Island and threw herself from Lipci’s Orjen mountains. The location of the gold on Devil’s Island was a mystery to all excluding herself.

Broke: Merlin is a royalist because he is a class traitor boot licker
Woke: Merlin is a royalist because he was raised a peasant in the sixth century and he has the perspective and values typical of that time period on top of his personal experiences with Arthur to give him faith in the enlightened despotism favored by Catherine the Great and Frederick of Prussia.
Bespoke: Merlin is a royalist because anyone who had to live through both the English Civil War and Voltaire's exile to Britain would come out the other side thinking democracy is stupid.
Transcendent: Merlin is not a royalist. He is the divine right of kings in human form. The avatar of Albion and its magic. He does not believe in kings because of Arthur. He believes in Arthur so Arthur gets to be king.

Day 47– The Lightning Temple
That giant unearthed mausoleum is rife with treasure! And horrors. Mostly horrors.
History is a wheel that spins slightly different each round.
(This totk rewrite au is called Familiar Familiar! It all starts when Zelda doesn’t get sent back in time and the butterfly effect devolved from there.)

after literal years i finally got around to downloading a pdf of the wipers times, an unsancitioned satitical british trench magazine circulated among the troops in france from 1916-1918 after the fortuitous discovery of a printing press. i have approximately five million other things i need to read so idk when i'll be able to devote much time to it, and i gotta pick up a proper copy bc it's missing at least salient no 4 vol 2. that said? i'm genuinely laughing at what i've skimmed so far

One of History's Greats
Boudicca
Tumblr media
Boudicca was a famous Warrior Queen of the Iceni tribe. In 60 or 61 AD, she led an uprising against the Roman Empire with the Iceni and many of the other Celtic tribes at her back. Her forces massacred an estimated 80,000 Romans and their supporters. Three cities were razed, Camulodunum, Londinium, and Verulamium. Camulodunum burnt with such a ferocity that the scorched earth still runs beneath modern Colchester, called the ‘Boudiccan Destruction Horizon’ by archaeologists.
The uprising was in direct response to Rome’s annexing of her kingdom. After her husband died, she became ruler. The Roman elite saw her as unfit to rule because she was a woman. The Roman soldiers publicly flogged her and raped her daughters.
They were eventually overcome after Rome was forced to bring in over three legions to subdue Boudicca’s forces. She died during that uprising, poisoning herself rather than be taken prisoner with no hope of escape.
