Tonight I m thinking about Polybe, who was a greek soldier taken hostage by Rome, and who after his liberation fell so thoroughly in love with it that he devoted his life to writing its praise, compiling its history and politics.
He saw Rome as the looming giant of war, got swallowed in its maw, and still fell for the beast.
And the beauty of it all is that all of his love letters, wrapped in clever words and cleverer ideas, changed it forever, and so the beast got changed by the man it devoured.
The city swallowed his culture whole, and so he brought his home to the city, not through war as Rome did, but throught love and written words.
The beautiful irony of the eternal city bringing the greeks to their knees only in the end to be marked forever by the awe one soldier held.
And how tragic and yet beautiful for him to still love it after wearing its chains and tasting the iron of its blades.
And what more fitting fate for his words to be some of the first to give us today a clear image of some of Rome's aspects.
Rome, through his hand, is taught to us with the love of a man who had all the reasons to hate it.

forever thinking about that part in people love dead jews about how it's a myth that the workers on ellis island forcibly changed people's last names and most jews just petitioned in court to have their names changed because of all the antisemitism that came with being identifiably jewish.
specifically, i'm thinking of this one guy called louis goldstein who was talking about how his name is a curse and it's impossible to live a good life in the united states while being called louis goldstein, except the judge was also called louis goldstein and was like "hey excuse you what the fuck"
#louis goldstein on louis goldstein violence#there was genuinely a ton of housing and employment discrimination#so having what people could identify as a jewish name did (and for many still does) make life harder#the section is mainly a reflection on why this has gone down in the historical memory as name changes being imposed#but the louis goldsteins live rent free in my head#antisemitism#jewish history#people love dead jews#jumblr

putting my prediction on record now that the coming decade is going to see the rise of viral-marketed fancy at-home water filtration systems, driving and driven by a drastic reduction in the quality of U.S. tap water (given that we are in a 'replacement era' where our current infrastructure is reaching the end of its lifespan--but isn't being replaced). also guessing that by the 2030s access to drinkable tap water will be a mainstream class issue, with low-income & unstably housed people increasingly forced to rely on expensive bottled water when they can't afford the up-front cost of at-home filtration--and with this being portrayed in media as a "moral failing" and short-sighted "choice," rather than a basic failure of our political & economic systems. really hope i'm just being alarmist, but plenty of this already happens in other countries, and the U.S. is in a state of decline, so. here's praying this post ages into irrelevance. timestamped April 2023
#apollo don't fucking touch this one#serious post#not a shitpost#hope i forget about this post and have no reason to ever look back on it one day#fyi i'm aware that access to potable water is already a major issue in parts of the U.S. yes i know flint michigan exists#i'm saying that this issue is going to GROW unless local & federal governments work together to fix it.#so it's a matter of if we trust them to fix it. And well--do you?#what are the chances the government just denies there's a problem until the water actually turns brown#at which point it's already been common knowledge for years and people have just become resigned and that's our new normal#i'm mean come on. how many of us already believe that we're being exposed to dangerous pollutants we don't know about and can't avoid#like that's pretty much just part of being a modern consumer. accepting that companies will happily endanger your life for a few pennies#and the most you'll get is like a $50 gift card as part of a class action rebate 20 years down the line#probably the history books will look back on Flint as a warning and a harbinger that went ignored#luxury condos will advertise their built-in top-of-the-line filtration systems--live here and you can drink water straight from your tap!#watch the elite professional class putting $700 dyson water filtration systems on their wedding registry#while the rest of us figure out how to fit water delivery into our grocery budget while putting 90% of our paycheck towards rent#also eggs are $15

Sorry not to be a camera nerd but in IWTV S2 ep2, 3 and 4 Louis in Paris having a Rolleiflex and a Leica specifically for Armand is so significant to me!!! Two cameras used at the same point in time but not by the same people.
First the Rolleiflex.
For the the Rolleiflex to work- you have to take a lil bow before your subject. This is because the viewing mirror is on top of the camera's body, so to see what the lens sees you have to incline. A lot a photographers said utilising this camera is also showing humility in front of the subject specially in street style photography (Robert Doisneau said that the Rolleiflex is like gathering images and the Leica like hunting for them, he also was convinced that the Rolleiflex was an "ethic of life and art" not betraying the subject you are trying to capture). You have to take your time and bow before them. (showing also the fact that louis struggles with not admiring humans )
Now the Leica
The Leica on the other hand put you on the same level as the model. The mirror is in a more traditional position at eye level. And is more favoured for fleeting subject, at least one street photographer as describe the Leica's style of photo as "hunting" for faces capturing the moment ( i think it's Janine Niépce or Henri Cartier-Bresson but don't quote me on this). It's really interesting that he photographs Armand with it , capture the fleeting aspect of his nature ,he is being hunted or they are hunting together ,and they are equals in Louis's eyes.
The style of photo he is taking in ep 4 is called "Humanist photography".
The mouvement in France was criticised for being a postcard image of paris, cliché, naïve and not political enough. And giving a romantic image of Paris after the tragédie of the WW2. It focuses mainly on people, often doing daily mondain activities, Humanist photography really liked cafés and bars. The paradox was despite the cliché exterior a lot of pictures were of working class people (we can see that in the pics he gives to Daniel in ep 2, louis has a very similar choice of subject mater and view of the world, taking portraits of his working class lovers and of Parisians in restaurants). The goal was to heal post war Paris and to show a new beginning. (echoing louis owns personal struggles of finding his new self and a new lover in paris, but also the rose tinted glasses he has on this time has a tourist)
Also in post war paris this is sososos significant in the history of photographie hahhahha my nerd heart is dying....
#outing myself as a IWTV fan#the theme analysis could be pushed further but it's a nice detail i wanted to point out and this post is already too long#also it is very technical vocab heavy for me. i hope it s understandable for non french speakers and non film student#filmposting#interview with the vampire#iwtv#amc iwtv#louis de pointe du lac#photoraphy#IWTV#putting my degree to a noble cause#rent#art history#technobabble

saw this comment on a 1x06 gifset from the pre reveal era and. yeah. I can kind of see it?
the big bouncy curls, the air of horniness mixed with innocence that's real on Daniel and mimicked on Rashidmand, the dark wardrobe colors, obviously the whole 20s thing...Daniel arriving at the torture palace to find a mirror of his younger self serving in the adorable little vampire pet role Daniel barely remembers fumbling vs Armand spicing up his and Louis's roleplay by dressing up as a sexy version of their son/dog. like coming home from college to find your dad dressed up as a horny submissive idealization of you except you've been brainwashed to forget he's your dad...or something. the dubai era was really freudian gymnastics like nothing we'll ever see again.
bonus other tags from that gifset:

Me, flirting: did you know that many 19th-century beauty manuals advised putting on cold cream before you went out in the sun to prevent sunburn? And some recipes for cold cream back then contained zinc oxide? So they might have accidentally invented sunscreen?

Ms. Codex 849, written in France ca. 1522, is a small book containing recommendations for Francis I concerning the payment and collection of taxes. It's written in a clear humanist script with delightful gold initials alternating red and blue decoration.

TOP 10 THEATER ON AO3 BASED ON NUMBER OF FANWORKS, SINGLE CATEGORY TAGS ONLY VERSION (2009-2022)
If you want to see the Theater bar chart with the multi-category fandoms included, please check this post.
To make these bar chart race, all series titles in the Theater Category on November 29 (or the closest date to it) of every year were copy-pasted from Wayback Machine to Google Sheets, rearranged according to number of fanworks, manually filtered for fandoms belonging in only one category, and then inputted to Flourish to turn into a bar chart race.
Locked fanworks aren't included in the count because Wayback Machine can’t view those, only Ao3 users can.
The high-ranking Les Miserables tags (Les Misérables - All Media Types & Les Misérables - Schönberg/Boublil) are both in multiple categories (Books & Literature & Theater) so it has been excluded in this bar chart. You can see it multicategory version.
Fandom tags that are no longer in the Theater category tag as of posting this are left out of the bar chart race. These tags are usually either miscategorized or already have other tags referring to the same fandom.
Please refer to this post for more fanfiction bar chart races.
Thanks for understanding and hopefully I didn’t mess up anywhere! 🙏

1. ANATOMY OF A KITCHEN (excerpt from THE THRILLING AND NOT AT ALL REPETITIVE ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN MAN AND KID DANGER: “A CHRONOLOGY OF ENTIRELY TRUE AND HEROIC EVENTS COINCIDING WITH THE END OF HISTORY”) [2] [3] [4]
If you want to know a person, watch how they treat their servers, how they treat their food. Living with them is the second best option. Living with Ray is not Henry’s only option, but it is the best. They don’t even need to watch the other eat; they know each other already.
[ “There is a man in my house. There will always be a man in my house. I will find him even when he is not there. And one day, when I find out there is no man in my house anymore, well—I will go find one and invite him in.” Paraphrased and reappropriated from Catherine Lacey’s “Cut”. The borrowed text refers to the uncanny feeling Henry experiences as an adult reflecting on his childhood relationships. ]
Catherine Lacey writes in her short story “Cut”: “If you're raised with an angry man in your house, there will always be an angry man in your house. You'll find him even when he is not there. And if one day you find that there is no angry man in your house—well, you will go find one and invite him in!” Peggy—a professor—reads this poem, which a female student has placed on her desk, and grapples with a response, to which she is advised, “It’s not your job to save anyone from their life or explain anything to them or even really teach them anything”.
PANEL NOTES
This follows the format of the catalyst stranger approaching the downtrodden protagonist in a dingy bar from behind, backlit by the hazy yellow lights and smoked out shadows. This is not a bar, but a kitchen—the center of any living space.
The borrowed text is tweaked, and excludes the descriptor “angry”, as the theme of the storyboards is not anger.
The use of red is limited and strategic, and scattered throughout like evidence; dusting for fingerprints. It’s tempting to drape Henry’s back in red against the blue background, as if bathed by an overhead lamp, but Ray is the anomaly. Henry is colored by an anxious, slightly melancholic blue (as well as shaky panel borders), while the flints of red signify danger (knock on wood) or non-literal symbolism.
The white wolf is curled around the blue in a protective gesture that also doubles as a stranglehold, snakelike.
Something, something, about wolves and lambs, consumption, and the simultaneous loss and retention of innocence through transformative processes. Note there are three lambs; these could stand either for Henry, Jasper, and Charlotte, or Henry (singular).
#henry danger#henry hart#ray manchester#henray#dangerverse#captain man#my art#aka unnecessarily heavy handed symbolism based on a 2 second imaginary interaction#the panels with shaky lines are in henrys pov while the straight ones are either metaphorical or are 3rd person or worse#worse as in henry has no power here and never did. smt smt about being fed and being devoured. the hand that offers you food has teeth#but will never eat you whole because it needs you too. smt smt smt hmmmmmmm#i love the color red. it is so provocative. mmm blue almost infected with red both antithetical and complimentary.#henry has let him in in a way that transcends even the physical#the most complicated most uncomfortable most familiar roommates to have ever roommated in the history of heroics#pov: ur new roommate is. well he is everything and that is concerning because its been like that for a loong time and it has shaped watered#and ruined your life. mmm at least you dont have to pay rent. or does that make it worse?
